Few studies have investigated the incidence of respiratory diseases based on anatomical sites or the relationship between breed and these diseases.The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of canine respiratory diseases among dogs in Japan, with relationship to the breed.We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of dogs with respiratory symptoms and calculated the odds ratio (OR) to evaluate the relationship between breed and disease.A total of 1050 dogs with respiratory symptoms were included in this study. Miniature dachshunds were the most common breed affected by respiratory diseases. Among tracheobronchial diseases, there was a significant association between some small breeds and tracheobronchial collapse, miniature dachshunds (OR: 4.44, 8.43, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 3.17-6.22, 4.33-16.0) and chronic bronchitis and bronchiectasis. Among nasal diseases, miniature dachshunds (OR: 27.2, 95% CI: 16.8-44.8) and golden retrievers (OR: 21.0, 95% CI: 6.43-69.3) were the most affected by non-infectious rhinitis and nasal aspergillosis, respectively. Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome was the most common disease among pharyngeal and laryngeal diseases, with a relationship with breed being found in some brachycephalic breeds, and Pomeranians (OR: 2.7, 95% CI: 1.42-5.17).Respiratory diseases in dogs are strongly correlated with popular breeds in Japan. Miniature dachshunds, in particular, are associated with many respiratory diseases, which may differ from international reports. Thus, this result may help in the early detection, prevention, treatment, and elucidation of the pathophysiology of canine respiratory diseases.

Nasal lymphoma (NL) is the most common nasal tumor in cats, and radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of these treatments have been described as the treatment for this disease. However, the previous studies included various machines and protocols of radiotherapy. Therefore, we aimed to retrospectively compare the prognosis among cases treated with palliative hypofractionated radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and a combination of them with united machine and protocol of radiotherapy. When compared overall survival and progression free survival, there was no significant difference among these three groups. The data of this study suggested that similar efficacy could be achieved by palliative hypofractionated radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of them.

Summary A 2-year-old neutered female Shiba dog exhibited laboured breathing for 1 month. Computed tomography of the thoracic cavity revealed multiple nodules (2–5 mm diameter) in the lungs. Grossly, the lungs were firm and normal in shape. The nodules were grey–white in colour. Microscopically, the nodules were non-encapsulated and exhibited an irregular shape. They were composed of polygonal or spindle cells with indistinct cell borders arranged in sheets. The cells had large, round, hyperchromatic nuclei and abundant pale eosinophilic cytoplasm with no atypia. Intrapulmonary arterial emboli and infiltration into the bronchioles were observed. Immunohistochemically, the cells were positive for vimentin and negative for cytokeratin, glial fibrillary acidic protein and α-smooth muscle actin. Ultrastructurally, the cells displayed cytoplasmic processes, desmosomes and intermediate filaments. These findings led to a diagnosis of diffuse pulmonary meningotheliomatosis with sarcomatous transformation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of diffuse pulmonary meningotheliomatosis in a dog.

The hands of the American black bear (Ursus americanus), the sun bear (Helarctos malayanus), the polar bear (Ursus maritimus), and the lion (Panthera leo) were dissected and the mass of the intrinsic hand muscles were systematically recorded to explore possible interspecies variation. Muscle mass was divided by the third metacarpal bone size for normalization. The results indicated that the normalized muscle masses of the thenar muscles were larger in the three bears than the lion, and the abductor pollicis muscle was larger in the sun bear than other bears. For the abductor digiti minimi muscle, the normalized muscle mass was larger in the three bears than the lion, but smaller in the polar bear among three bears. One limitation of this study is that here we provided only one specimen for each species, and thus the present results need to be confirmed by examining a larger number of cases in future studies. However, these differences in the intrinsic hand muscles of the four species may reflect adaptation for their different habits.

We report a case of a vesicoenteric fistula arising from an adenocarcinoma of ectopic pancreatic tissue in a Meckel diverticulum in a 58-year-old man. The patient suffered from refractory micturition pain and increased urinary frequency. Computerized tomography with a contrast agent showed a ring-shaped enhanced mass near the dome of the urinary bladder. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a cystic mass close to the urinary bladder with partly irregular wall and fistula formation to the urinary bladder. Surgical findings showed a Meckel diverticulum in the ileum, which formed a fistula with the urinary bladder, and Meckel diverticulectomy and partial cystectomy were performed. Histological findings revealed a vesicoenteric fistula arising from a papillary adenocarcinoma of ectopic pancreatic tissue in a Meckel diverticulum. The patient has survived without recurrence for more than 4 years since surgery.

A 16-year-old castrated male mongrel cat presented with swelling under the left pinna and a 3 -month history of voice change. Laryngeal endoscopy revealed circumferential oedema around the arytenoid cartilages and hypersecretion of saliva. Histopathological examination of the mass around the left ear canal was considered the primary lesion that originated from cutaneous apocrine adenocarcinoma or parotid gland adenocarcinoma, and it metastasized to the larynx, lung and medial retropharyngeal lymph nodes. This report provides new insights into feline laryngeal diseases which could result in laryngeal metastasis with slight mucosal irregularity alone and without obvious radiographic abnormalities. Therefore, histopathological examination should be performed when a cat presents clinical signs such as stridor, dysphonia or voice change without any mass-forming laryngeal lesion.

Dynamic pharyngeal collapse (PC) is a rarely reported condition in cats defined as the partial or complete collapse of the pharyngeal lumen during inspiration. Herein, we report the imaging findings and clinical features of three cats with dynamic PC. Lateral radiograph of the head was insufficient to detect dynamic PC, but fluoroscopy in conscious cats revealed dynamic PC. Magnetic resonance imaging was not helpful to reveal dynamic PC and underlying diseases. We obtained biopsy samples from the irregular nasopharyngeal mucosal membrane through endoscopy in two of the three cases and high-grade B-cell lymphoma was histopathologically diagnosed. In feline cases with abnormal upper respiratory sounds, dynamic PC should be considered, and fluoroscopy is the imaging technique of choice to diagnose the condition.

Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) based on high resolution three-dimensional data of magnetic resonance imaging has been developed as a statistical morphometric imaging analysis method to locate brain abnormalities in humans. Recently, VBM has been used for human patients with psychological or neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and epilepsy. Traditional volumetry using region of interest (ROI) is performed manually and the observer needs detailed knowledge of the neuroanatomy having to trace objects of interest on many slices which can cause artificial errors. In contrast, VBM is an automatic technique that has less observer biases compared to the ROI method. In humans, VBM analysis is performed in patients with epilepsy to detect accurately structural abnormalities. Familial spontaneous epileptic cats (FSECs) have been developed as an animal model of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy. In FSECs, hippocampal asymmetry had been detected using three-dimensional magnetic resonance (MR) volumetry based on the ROI method. In this study, we produced a standard template of the feline brain and compared FSECs and healthy cats using standard VBM analysis. The feline standard template and tissue probability maps were created using 38 scans from 14 healthy cats. Subsequently, the gray matter was compared between FSECs (n = 25) and healthy controls (n = 12) as group analysis and between each FSEC and controls as individual analysis. The feline standard template and tissue probability maps could be created using the VBM tools for humans. There was no significant reduction of GM in the FSEC group compared to the control group. However, 5/25 (20%) FSECs showed significant decreases in the hippocampal and/or amygdaloid regions in individual analysis. Here, we established the feline standard templates of the brain that can be used to determine accurately abnormal zones. Furthermore, like MR volumetry, VBM identified morphometric changes in the hippocampus and/or amygdala in some FSECs.

OBJECTIVE To investigate epilepsy-related neuropathologic changes in cats of a familial spontaneous epileptic strain (ie, familial spontaneous epileptic cats [FSECs]). ANIMALS 6 FSECs, 9 age-matched unrelated healthy control cats, and 2 nonaffected (without clinical seizures)dams and 1 nonaffected sire of FSECs. PROCEDURES Immunohistochemical analyses were used to evaluate hippocampal sclerosis, amygdaloid sclerosis, mossy fiber sprouting, and granule cell pathological changes. Values were compared between FSECs and control cats. RESULTS Significantly fewer neurons without gliosis were detected in the third subregion of the cornu ammonis (CA) of the dorsal and ventral aspects of the hippocampus as well as the central nucleus of the amygdala in FSECs versus control cats. Gliosis without neuronal loss was also observed in the CA4 subregion of the ventral aspect of the hippocampus. No changes in mossy fiber sprouting and granule cell pathological changes were detected. Moreover, similar changes were observed in the dams and sire without clinical seizures, although to a lesser extent. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Findings suggested that the lower numbers of neurons in the CA3 subregion of the hippocampus and the central nucleus of the amygdala were endophenotypes of familial spontaneous epilepsy in cats. In contrast to results of other veterinary medicine reports, severe epilepsy-related neuropathologic changes (eg, hippocampal sclerosis, amygdaloid sclerosis, mossy fiber sprouting, and granule cell pathological changes) were not detected in FSECs. Despite the use of a small number of cats with infrequent seizures, these findings contributed new insights on the pathophysiologic mechanisms of genetic-related epilepsy in cats.

Background Leucine-rich glioma-inactivated (LGI) proteins play a critical role in synaptic transmission. Dysfunction of these genes and encoded proteins is associated with neurological disorders such as genetic epilepsy or autoimmune limbic encephalitis in animals and human. Familial spontaneous epileptic cats (FSECs) are the only feline strain and animal model of familial temporal lobe epilepsy. The seizure semiology of FSECs comprises recurrent limbic seizures with or without evolution into generalized epileptic seizures, while cats with antibodies against voltage-gated potassium channel complexed/LGI1 show limbic encephalitis and recurrent limbic seizures. However, it remains unclear whether the genetics underlying FSECs are associated with LGI family genes. In the present study, we cloned and characterized the feline LGI1–4 genes and examined their association with FSECs. Conventional PCR techniques were performed for cloning and mutational analysis. Characterization was predicted using bioinformatics software. Results The cDNAs of feline LGI1–4 contained 1674-bp, 1650-bp, 1647-bp, and 1617-bp open reading frames, respectively, and encoded proteins comprising 557, 549, 548, and 538 amino acid residues, respectively. The feline LGI1–4 putative protein sequences showed high homology with Homo sapiens, Canis familiaris, Bos taurus, Sus scrofa, and Equus caballus (92%–100%). Mutational analysis in 8 FSECs and 8 controls for LGI family genes revealed 3 non-synonymous and 14 synonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms in the coding region. Only one non-synonymous single nucleotide polymorphism in LGI4 was found in 3 out of 8 FSECs. Using three separate computational tools, this mutation was not predicted to be disease causing. No co-segregation of the disease was found with any variant. Conclusions We cloned the cDNAs of the four feline LGI genes, analyzed the amino acid sequences, and revealed that epilepsy in FSEC is not a monogenic disorder associated with LGI genes. Summary A strain of familial spontaneous epileptic cats (FSECs) with typical limbic seizures was identified in 2010. The electroencephalographic features suggested that an epileptogenic zone is present in the mesial temporal structures (i.e., amygdala and/or hippocampus). In this study, visual evaluations and quantitative analyses were performed by using 3D MR hippocampal volumetry in comparing FSECs with age-matched controls. Visual hippocampal asymmetries were seen in 8 of 14 (57.1%) FSECs. The FSEC group showed a significantly higher asymmetric ratio (4.15%) than the control group (0.99%). The smaller side of hippocampal volume (HV) (0.206cm 3 ) in FSECs was significantly smaller than the mean HV in controls (0.227cm 3 ). However, the means of left and right HVs and total HVs in FSECs showed no differences because the laterality of hippocampal atrophy was different in each individual. Therefore, since FSECs represent a true model of spontaneous epilepsy, hippocampal volumetry should be evaluated in each individual as well as in human patients. The significant asymmetry of HV suggests the potential for hippocampal atrophy in FSECs.

Feline nasal tumours (NTs) are locally invasive and occasionally metastasise to distant sites. Although palliative hypofractionated radiotherapy (HRT) is used, its efficacy and long-term complications have not been adequately evaluated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of HRT in treating feline malignant NTs, including monitoring improvement in clinical signs, acute and late complications, and prognosis. The medical records of 65 cats with malignant NTs treated with HRT were included. Overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method. The log-rank test and Cox proportional hazard model were used to evaluate factors that influenced OS and PFS. Clinical signs improved in 86.2% of cats following radiotherapy. Acute complications were observed in 58.5% of cats but were manageable and acceptable. Among late complications, cataract was most frequently observed (20.5%), and atrophy of the entire eyeball and osteochondroma at the irradiation site were each observed in two cats. The median OS and PFS in 65 cats were 432 days and 229 days, respectively. No significant difference between OS of cats with nasal lymphoma and that of cats with other tumours was observed. Despite some limitations due to the retrospective nature of the study, palliative HRT for feline NTs can be considered a useful treatment option because of the high incidence of improvement and more favourable prognosis, although it may be preferable not to use the hypofractionated regimen in young cats with lymphoma that are expected to survive for a long period.

Objectives The effectiveness of zonisamide (ZNS) against spontaneous epilepsy in cats has not yet been described. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of ZNS on interictal paroxysmal discharges (PDs) using scalp electroencephalography (EEG) in familial spontaneous epileptic cats (FSECs). Methods Eight FSECs were evaluated (six males and two females). Scalp EEG measurements were performed once a week for 3 weeks before ZNS administration (Pre-ZNS). Thereafter, administration of ZNS was started and an adjustment period was instituted until the drug in plasma achieved the steady state. When ZNS in plasma was confirmed to be within 10–40 μg/ml, scalp EEG measurements were performed once a week for 3 weeks (Post-ZNS). The number of PDs (counts/min) were compared between Pre-ZNS and Post-ZNS treatment. Results The median number of PDs for Pre-ZNS and Post-ZNS were 0.43/min (0.13–0.82/min) and 0.28/min (0.07–0.87/min), respectively. The number of PDs Post-ZNS was significantly reduced compared with Pre-ZNS ( P = 0.02). Conclusions and relevance This study showed that ZNS, within the recommended therapeutic range suggested for use in humans and dogs (10–40 µg/ml), reduced the number of PDs recorded on EEG in FSECs that are considered a model for cats with idiopathic epilepsy. Although phenobarbital is the antiepileptic drug of choice for epileptic cats, the results of this research provide evidence to support the use of ZNS in cats with phenobarbital-resistant epilepsy or for cats that cannot use phenobarbital due to adverse side effects.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the usefulness of diffusion and perfusion MRI of the cerebrum in cats with familial spontaneous epilepsy (FSECs) and identify microstructural and functional deficit zones in affected cats. ANIMALS 19 FSECs and 12 healthy cats. PROCEDURES Diffusion-weighted, diffusion tensor, and perfusion-weighted MRI of the cerebrum were performed during interictal periods in FSECs. Imaging findings were compared between FSECs and control cats. Diffusion (apparent diffusion coefficient and fractional anisotropy) and perfusion (relative cerebral blood volume [rCBV], relative cerebral blood flow [rCBF], and mean transit time) variables were measured bilaterally in the hippocampus, amygdala, thalamus, parietal cortex gray matter, and subcortical white matter. Asymmetry of these variables in each region was also evaluated and compared between FSECs and control cats. RESULTS The apparent diffusion coefficient of the total amygdala of FSECs was significantly higher, compared with that of control cats. The fractional anisotropy of the right side and total hippocampus of FSECs was significantly lower, compared with that of control cats. The left and right sides and total hippocampal rCBV and rCBF were significantly lower in FSECs than in control cats. The rCBV and rCBF of the parietal cortex gray matter in FSECs were significantly lower than in control cats. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE In FSECs, diffusion and perfusion MRI detected microstructural changes and hypoperfusion (lowered function) in the cerebrum during interictal periods from that of healthy cats. These findings indicated that diffusion and perfusion MRI may be useful for noninvasive evaluation of epileptogenic foci in cats.

Objective The familial spontaneous epileptic cat (FSEC) is thought to be a good genetic model of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy. In the current study, cerebral diffusion and perfusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were used to confirm the functional deficit zone in the FSEC and evaluate the effect of a single seizure on different brain regions. Methods Six FSECs and six healthy control cats were used in this study. MRI was performed in the interictal state (resting state for control) and postictal state immediately after the vestibular stimulation-induced generalized epileptic seizure (control cats received the same stimulation as the FSECs). The apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), fractional anisotropy and perfusion parameters (i.e., relative regional cerebral blood volume (rCBV), relative regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF), and relative regional mean transit time (rMTT)) were measured in the hippocampus, amygdala, thalamus, and gray and white matter. Results In the interictal state, the rCBV and rMTT in the hippocampus was significantly decreased in FSECs, compared to the control. In the postictal state, FSECs had a significantly decreased ADC and an increased rCBV, rCBF, and rMTT in the hippocampus, and an increased rMTT in the amygdala, compared to the interictal state. Conclusion This study showed that FSECs had interictal hypoperfusion in the hippocampus, and postictal hypodiffusion and hyperperfusion in the hippocampus and/or amygdala. These findings suggested that the hippocampus and/or amygdala act as the functional deficit and expanded seizure-onset zones in FSECs.

A 10-year-old spayed female Abyssinian cat was presented with cluster limbic focal seizures with secondary generalisation. From magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings, the cat was diagnosed clinically as having a glioma in the left piriform lobe, and hypofractionated radiation therapy (RT) was performed using a linear accelerator. Although the tumour size had reduced significantly at 4 months after RT, recurrence was observed at 11 months after RT. Additional RT was performed and was effective; however, recurrence was observed at 11 months after the additional RT. Chemotherapy was started using nimustine (ACNU; 30 mg/m2, every 6 weeks). Tumour regression was confirmed by follow-up MRIs from 2 to 5 months after starting chemotherapy. Four years and 2 months after the first presentation the cat died as a result of tumour lysis syndrome following treatment of a high-grade lymphoma. Histopathological diagnosis of the brain tumour confirmed anaplastic oligodendroglioma.

Objectives To evaluate the efficacy of hypofractionated radiotherapy for canine nasal tumours, including the improvement in clinical signs, rate of complications and assessment of prognostic factors. Methods Medical records of 38 dogs with malignant nasal tumours were reviewed, and those treated with a weekly schedule of hypofractionated radiotherapy were included in the study. Acute and late side effects were defined as complications noted either within 1 month or after 6 months of irradiation, respectively. Progression-free interval and overall survival were calculated using the Kaplan–Meier method. Log-rank test and Cox proportional hazard model were also performed. Results Clinical signs improved in 30 of 36 dogs. Acute complications were seen in 28 of 36 dogs and were considered manageable. Late complications were observed in 17 of 30 dogs that survived 6 months or longer, but severe side effects were not observed. The median progression-free interval and overall survival was 245 days (95% CI: 127–512 days) and 512 days (95% CI: 203–820 days), respectively. Age, breed and presence of dyspnoea were negatively correlated with overall survival. Clinical Significance These results suggest that hypofractionated radiotherapy could be a viable option for the treatment of nasal tumours in dogs that are not candidates for conventional multi-fractionated radiotherapy.

Background Epilepsy is the most common neurological disease in veterinary practice. However, contrary to human medicine, epilepsy classification in veterinary medicine had not been clearly defined until recently. A number of reports on canine epilepsy have been published, reflecting in part updated proposals from the human epilepsy organization, the International League Against Epilepsy. In 2015, the International Veterinary Epilepsy Task Force (IVETF) published a consensus report on the classification and definition of canine epilepsy. The purpose of this retrospective study was to investigate the etiological distribution, survival time of dogs with idiopathic epilepsy (IdE) and structural epilepsy (StE), and risk factors for survival time, according to the recently published IVETF classification. We investigated canine cases with epilepsy that were referred to our teaching hospital in Japan during the past 10 years, and which encompassed a different breed population from Western countries. Results A total of 358 dogs with epilepsy satisfied our etiological study criteria. Of these, 172 dogs (48 %) were classified as IdE and 76 dogs (21 %) as StE. Of these dogs, 100 dogs (consisting of 65 with IdE and 35 with StE) were included in our survival study. Median survival time from the initial epileptic seizure in dogs with IdE and StE was 10.4 and 4.5 years, respectively. Median lifespan of dogs with IdE and StE was 13.5 and 10.9 years, respectively. Multivariable analysis demonstrated that risk factors for survival time in IdE were high seizure frequency (≥0.3 seizures/month) and focal epileptic seizures. Conclusions Focal epileptic seizures were identified as a risk factor for survival time in IdE. Clinicians should carefully differentiate seizure type as it is difficult to identify focal epileptic seizures. With good seizure control, dogs with IdE can survive for nearly the same lifespan as the general dog population. Our results using the IVETF classification are similar to previous studies, although some features were noted in our Japanese canine population (which was composed of mainly small-breed dogs), including a longer lifespan in dogs with epilepsy and a larger percentage of meningoencephalomyelitis of unknown origin in dogs with StE.

Hippocampal atrophy, which is a component of hippocampal sclerosis and recognized commonly in human intractable epilepsy, is controversial in canine epilepsy. We examined the hippocampal volume in 58 epileptic dogs and 35 control dogs using magnetic resonance (MR) images, and calculated the relative hippocampal volume asymmetry of the right and left hippocampus. Subjectively, there were visible MR imaging abnormalities in seven of the 58 epileptic dogs (12%). The hippocampel volume asymmetric ratio of epileptic dogs (5.84 +/- 4.47%) was significantly greater than that of control dogs (1.62 +/- 0.88%). Using a cutoff threshold asymmetric ratio of 6% that is indicated in human epilepsy, 28 epileptic dogs (48%) were characterized as having unilateral hippocampus atrophy. The hippocampal volume asymmetry ratio cannot be used to detect bilateral atrophy. In conclusion, although less frequent than that observed in human epilepsy patients, hippocampal atrophy may occur in canine epilepsy.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a devastatingmuscle disorder that is characterized by progressive muscle necrosis,fibrosis, and fatty infiltration. To examine the temporospatial pathologicalchanges, a noninvasive evaluation method such as magnetic resonanceimaging (MRI) is needed. The aim of this study was to precisely assessmuscle necrosis and inflammation based on a sequence of T2-weightedimaging (T2WI), gadolinium-enhanced imaging, and selective fat suppres-sion, chemical shift selective T2-weighted imaging (CHESS-T2WI), on a 3.0-Tesla MRI unit in 3-month-old and 7-year-old dogs with canine X-linkedmuscular dystrophy (CXMD J ), a suitable animal model for DMD. The resultsshow that CHESS-T2WI was more sensitive and useful from the early to latestages of CXMD J than T2WI or contrast enhancement imaging in theevaluation of muscle necrosis, because these latter sequences can beinfluenced by fatty infiltration or interstitial connective tissues. Background: Imatinib mesylate is a small molecule targeted at dysregulated protein-tyrosine kinase. Mutation of c-kit exon 11, which induces constitutive phosphorylation of KIT, is one of the mechanisms for the development or progression of mast cell tumor (MCT) in dogs. The purpose of this study was to examine the therapeutic potential of imatinib mesylate in canine MCT. Hypothesis: Imatinib mesylate has activity against MCT in dogs, and response to treatment can be correlated to presence of mutation within exon 11 of c-kit. Animals: Twenty-one dogs with MCT with gross tumor burden and median tumor size of 7.2 cm (range, 1.0–25.3 cm) before treatment. Methods: Tumors were analyzed for mutation of c-kit exon 11. Imatinib mesylate was administered PO to the dogs at a dose of 10 mg/kg daily for 1–9 weeks. Results: Ten of 21 dogs (48%) had some beneficial response to imatinib mesylate treatment within 14 days of treatment initiation. All 5 dogs with a demonstrable c-kit mutation in exon 11 responded to the drug (1 complete remission, 4 partial remission). Conclusions and Clinical Importance: Imatinib mesylate has clinical activity against MCT in dogs. Response could not be predicted based on presence of absence of a mutation in exon 11 of c-kit.

Magnetic resonance (MR) was conducted for an 8-year-old, intact male Spitz with sneezing, serous discharge and epistaxis from the left nasal cavity. MR imaging showed a nasal cavity-occupied mass of iso-intensity on T1WI , high-intensity on T2WI and markedly enhanced on contrast-enhanced T1WI at parts of rostal to medial ocular angle in the left cavity. After Surgery and intraoperative radiation, the mass was diagnosed intranasal hemangiosarcoma by histopathology. Although the dog showed the finding, which suggested recurrence after the treatment ending, about 30 months later, it maintained good conditions without evidence of metastasis.

Magnetic resonance (MR) and computed tomography (CT) were performed in an 8-year-old, spayed female cat with chronic effort respiration at the inspiration phase and stertor. Increased bone opacity in the areas of the head, neck and thorax were observed on radiography. MR images showed no signal intensity on both transverse T1WI and T2WI of the nasal cavity. CT revealed increased bone density and hypertrophy of the nasal turbinate and a narrowed nasal passage. From these results, we concluded this case had osteopetrosis-like disease, and that the respiratory distress was caused by hypertrophy of the nasal turbinate.

A 12-year-old spayed female Labrador retriever was presented with forebrain signs. Brain MRI revealed a huge cystic lesion with the thickened falx in the frontal region. The brain parenchyma surrounding the lesion showed significant signs of a mass effect and also increased intracranial pressure. However, the dog suddenly became lucid after about two weeks, and an MRI scan one month after the initial study revealed a dramatically shrunken cystic lesion. The dog survived for over a year until it was euthanized for other reasons, and the brain lesion was diagnosed as a cystic meningioma histologically. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report that described the reduction of the cystic lesion of a cystic meningioma in dogs.

The criteria for brain atrophy in dogs have not yet been established, because of wide variation in the morphology of the ventricles and sulci of the brain depending on the breed and size. In this study, we examined the thickness of the interthalamic adhesion in a transverse magnetic resonance image to investigate normal, to examine the correlation with age, body weight, and breed, and to assess whether measurement would be a useful indicator of brain atrophy. The animals used in this study were of various breeds and weight, and had no identifiable intracranial lesion. They were divided into two groups: a normal group (0.6-15-year-old, n = 66) and a demented aging group (12-18-year-old, n = 12). The interthalamic adhesion thickness in both T1- and T2-weighted transverse images were measured in all dogs. The interthalamic adhesion thickness in the normal and demented groups was 6.79 +/- 0.70 and 3.82 +/- 0.79 mm, respectively. The interthalamic adhesion thickness in the demented group was significantly smaller. In an analysis of the correlation of interthalamic adhesion thickness with age and weight in normal dogs, significant negative and positive correlation was recognized, respectively. However, the strength of these correlations was low. These results suggest that interthalamic adhesion thickness may be a good parameter for evaluating brain atrophy in dogs with cognitive dysfunction.

Objective: In order to investigate kainic acid (KA)-induced amygdaloid seizure and seizure-induced brain damage in dogs, and to compare these findings with that in other species, a KA-induced seizure model in dogs was produced. Material and methods: Normal beagle dogs were used. A Teflon cannula for KA injection was inserted into the left amygdala, and cortical or depth electrodes were positioned. One week after surgery, 1.5 μg of KA was microinjected into the left amygdala. EEGs and the behavior of the animals were monitored for 2 months after KA injection. In addition, neuron-specific enolase levels in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF-NSE) were measured intermittently. At 2 months after the injection, histopathological studies were performed. Results: KA-treated dogs showed limbic seizures that started from the left amygdala within 30 min after injection. The seizures developed into complex partial status epilepticus (CPSE), and started independently from the bilateral amygdala during the CPSE. The CPSE lasted for 1–3 days, and the animals showed no spontaneous seizures during the 2-month observation period. A significant increase in CSF-NSE was observed immediately after CPSE. Histopathologically, extensive necrosis, which formed large cavity lesions, was observed around the bilateral amygdala. Summary: A microinjection of KA into unilateral amygdala in dogs induced CPSE. The seizures elicited independently from bilateral amygdala, and bilateral limbic structures suffered extensive injury. In addition, CSF-NSE was demonstrated as a useful marker of acute neuronal damage.

An intradural tumor in the upper cervical region was found in a dog with quadriparesis and chronic respiratory acidosis. Surgical removal of the tumor in the atlas and intraoperative radiotherapy were attempted. The tumor was histologically diagnosed as a neural glioma. A preoperative acid-base disturbance was dramatically improved after surgery. The clinical changes appeared in this case suggest that compression of the spinal cord at this region may cause paralysis of the respiratory muscles and secondarily result in chronic respiratory acidosis following the respiratory insufficiency.

A 12-year-old castrated male Japanese domestic cat was presented for evaluation of frequent seizures accompanied by tonic convulsion. MRI examination revealed a space-occupying lesion with a clear boundary in the area from the temporal to occipital region of the left cerebral hemisphere. The intracranial mass was surgically removed, and was histologically diagnosed as meningioma. Although neurological abnormalities such as lowered consciousness level, circling, and visual disturbance with loss of pupillary light reflex and menace reflex were temporally observed after surgery, the cat was improved with time by intensive postoperative care. Seizure disappeared after surgical removal of the intracranial menigioma in this case.

A feline strain of familial spontaneous epileptic cats (FSECs) with typical limbic seizures was identified in 2010, and have been maintained as a novel animal model of genetic epilepsy. In this study, we characterized the electroencephalographic (EEG) features of FSECs. On scalp EEG under sedation, FSECs showed sporadic, but comparatively frequent interictal discharges dominantly in the uni- or bilateral temporal region. Bemegride activation was performed in order to evaluate the predisposition of epileptogenicity of FSECs. The threshold doses of the first paroxysmal discharge, clinical myoclonus and generalized convulsion in FSECs were significantly lower than those in control cats. Chronic video-intracranial EEG monitoring revealed subclinical or clinical focal seizures with secondarily generalization onset from the unilateral amygdala and/or hippocampus. Clinical generalized seizures were also recorded, but we were unable to detect the onset site. The results of the present study show that FSECs resemble not only feline kindling or the kainic acid model and El mouse, but also human familial or sporadic mesial temporal lobe epilepsy. In addition, our results indicate that FSECs are a natural and valuable model of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy.

Several reports have described magnetic resonance (MR) findings in canine and feline lysosomal storage diseases such as gangliosidoses and neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis. Although most of those studies described the signal intensities of white matter in the cerebrum, findings of the corpus callosum were not described in detail. A retrospective study was conducted on MR findings of the corpus callosum as well as the rostral commissure and the fornix in 18 cases of canine and feline lysosomal storage diseases. This included 6 Shiba Inu dogs and 2 domestic shorthair cats with GM1 gangliosidosis; 2 domestic shorthair cats, 2 familial toy poodles, and a golden retriever with GM2 gangliosidosis; and 2 border collies and 3 chihuahuas with neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses, to determine whether changes of the corpus callosum is an imaging indicator of those diseases. The corpus callosum and the rostral commissure were difficult to recognize in all cases of juvenile-onset gangliosidoses (GM1 gangliosidosis in Shiba Inu dogs and domestic shorthair cats and GM2 gangliosidosis in domestic shorthair cats) and GM2 gangliosidosis in toy poodles with late juvenile-onset. In contrast, the corpus callosum and the rostral commissure were confirmed in cases of GM2 gangliosidosis in a golden retriever and canine neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses with late juvenile- to early adult-onset, but were extremely thin. Abnormal findings of the corpus callosum on midline sagittal images may be a useful imaging indicator for suspecting lysosomal storage diseases, especially hypoplasia (underdevelopment) of the corpus callosum in juvenile-onset gangliosidoses.

To compare the pathophysiologic changes occurring during drowning in cold fresh water and cold salt water with reference to viability.Randomized, prospective, controlled submersion experiments in two contrasting cold liquids.A laboratory at a large university-affiliated medical institution.Thirteen healthy, anesthetized mongrel dogs. Three dogs served as controls and were immersed but not submerged. The remainder were submerged in cold fresh water or cold salt water (4 degrees C).Catheters were placed in the femoral artery, right carotid artery and right internal jugular vein. Electrocardiogram, pneumogram, and rectal temperatures were measured continuously during submersion/immersion.Cold water submersion with drowning produced a large initial decrease in carotid artery temperature (approximately 7.5 degrees C in the first 2 mins) compared with a minor decrease (approximately 0.8 degrees C with immersion). No significant differences were noted in the rate of decrease of temperature between drowning in fresh water and salt water. During cold fresh water drowning, aspiration produced gross hemodilution with an average increase in body weight of 16.5%. Hematocrit values, serum sodium concentrations, and osmolality decreased while serum potassium concentrations, catecholamines, and free hemoglobin increased. All measured biochemical data (except PaO2) remained at viable levels. By contrast, during cold salt water drowning, average body weight increased by only 6%, with hemoconcentration and a shrinkage of vascular volume. Hematocrit and hemoglobin values increased by 30%, but initial plasma free hemoglobin values remained unchanged. Serum sodium concentrations, osmolality, and potassium concentrations increased rapidly to critical levels.On submersion in cold water, all of the experimental animals developed tachypnea immediately, followed by aspiration with predictable effects. The biochemical and pathophysiologic changes in cold water drowning approximated those changes reported for warm water drowning for both fresh and salt water with one exception and continued aspiration of cold water produced extremely rapid core cooling as long as the circulation remained intact. This process of acute submersion hypothermia may protect the brain temporarily from lethal damage, as reported in cases of cold fresh water drowning. Concentrations of circulating catecholamines increased exponentially in both groups of test animals. Clinically, their acute effects on the circulation, compounded by significant hypothermia and extreme anoxia, must hamper the detection of residual circulation at rescue and may play a role in sudden death from cold water in the absence of drowning.

The effects of intratracheal administration of MKS 492, a selective phosphodiesterase (PDE) III inhibitor, were studied in five anesthetized bronchoconstricted cats. The animals were challenged by four repeated doses of intratracheal methacholine (67 micrograms/kg), and the degree of bronchoconstriction was assessed from increases in respiratory system resistance (Rrs). All animals demonstrated good bronchoconstrictive responses (i.e., 86-99% increases in Rrs) to methacholine without tachyphylaxis. On a separate day, the cats received the same four doses of methacholine after being pretreated with either intratracheal saline or three different doses of MKS 492 (0.17, 1.7, and 17 micrograms/kg). The increases in Rrs with 1.7 micrograms/kg [52.6 +/- 8.4% (SE)] and 17 micrograms/kg of MKS 492 (44.4 +/- 10.1%) were smaller than those with saline pretreatment (88.1 +/- 16.8%) (P < 0.05). There were no treatment-associated changes in mean arterial pressure or heart rate during administration of MKS 492. We conclude that intratracheal MKS 492 effectively reduced methacholine-induced bronchoconstriction in a dose-dependent fashion without substantial systemic effects. These preliminary results suggest that inhalation of isozyme-selective PDE inhibitors may deserve consideration for clinical trials provided that more extensive preclinical investigations justify such trials.

A 9 year-old, neutered, male French Bulldog showing cluster seizures was diagnosed with a glioma in the right piriform cortex by MRI. Hypofractionated radiation therapy (RT) was performed using a linear accelerator. Although the lesion had involuted significantly at 2 months after RT, recurrence was observed at 4 months after RT. Chemotherapy was started using CCNU (60 mg/m(2) every 6-9 weeks) and was continued for one year. Follow-up MRI revealed involution of the lesion and the intervals of CCNU were increased to every 9-14 weeks. Two years after the first presentation, the dog suffered status epilepticus, followed by deficits of left sided postural reaction with cognitive dysfunction. The dog died on day 910, and histopathological diagnosis confirmed anaplastic oligodendroglioma.
