Abstract

Tra le varie componenti che condizionano la performance natatoria, oltre alle variabili dipendenti dal nuotatore stesso, un fattore estremamente rilevante e che ha consentito negli ultimi anni l'abbattimento di parecchi record è rappresentato dal costume di gara. Abbandonati i tessuti ottenuti dalla lavorazione dei polimeri per decisioni FINA, i produttori hanno dovuto realizzare nuovi costumi. Dopo alcune considerazioni sulle componenti della performance natatoria, si è voluto sperimentare sul campo un nuovo software procedendo al confronto di alcuni nuovi costumi in nuotatori di alto livello.

In this study, the neck and head relative to the ground were more flexed, while the head relative to the neck was more extended, in the subjects who were blind than in the sighted subjects. Abstract

Imagery training is the ability to develop mental images that can increase human resources and performances. Flow is one of the peak moments corresponding to a state of optimal experience. This study in young swimmers aimed to observe the effects of specific imagery training on flow state and on swimming performance. Eight young swimmers completed a specific mental training program using imagery as a supplement to three weeks of regular swimming training. A Flow State Scale questionnaire was filled out before and after the training as well as the performance on 100m front crawl stroke was surveyed. The imagery training focused on improving three phases of the front crawl swim stroke and seemed to induce a trend to vary the flow state of the participants. Abstract

The antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) has been associated with multiple cardiac abnormalities. The present report describes a case of right ventricle thrombus in a 51-year-old woman with a history of autoimmune haemolytic anemia and antiphospholipid antibodies. Transthoracic echocardiography demonstrated the presence of a right ventricle mass, mimicking a myxoma. She underwent open heart removal of the mass and was started on indefinitely anticoagulant therapy. At 2 years follow-up she was free of symptoms.

48. 18 ‘devicectomy’ following severe nickel allergy after transcatheter closure of an atrial septal defect with amplatzer septal occluder

Abstract

BackgroundTranscatheter device closure of secundum atrial septal defects (ASD) using Amplatzer Septal Occluder (ASO) is usually well tolerated with favourable outcome with analgesics.Case10 years old boy underwent successful transcather device closure of secundum ASD in august 2011 with a 22 mm Amplatzer Septal Occluder device. Three days after the procedure he developed severe migraines. These were debilitating headaches resulting in loss of school days and poor quality of life. He was found to have grade 1 reaction to nickel allergy following skin test. He received extensive medical therapy for migraine over a period of 6 years under neurology team with no improvement in symptoms. After several discussions, we decided to surgically remove the device and close the ASD. This was accomplished under bypass surgery. Postoperative course was uneventful. Immediately the next day after successful removal of the device and closure of the defect, his headaches were completely resolved. Intraoperatively it was found that even after 6 years the device had not endothelialized and there was exposure of blood to the uncovered device.DiscussionNickel allergy to ASO device have previously been reported. However, these are short lived migraine headaches up to 6 months or chest pain responsive to medical therapy. Our case is first to describe the long-term Nickel allergy to ASD device containing ninitol in children requiring surgical removal of device.ConclusionHistory of nickel allergy should be explored prior to device closure of ASD. In case of know allergy alternative devices or surgical repair should be considered.

Abstract

In a learn-to-swim programme, the question of what is the best environmental condition for aquatic adjustment. The choice could depend on the depth of the swimming facilities or on the swimming teaching methodology. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of water adjustment carried out in deep or shallow water in 3 to 6 year old children. Children practicing the learning programme in deep water obtained a higher mean score, but not significantly different than the children having a shallow water adjustment programme. The depth of the swimming pool seems to not significantly affect the results. Children can approach guided experiences equally either in shallow or deep water to learn the swimming basic skills and independence in the water, with no differences in the rate of acquisition or in the quality of the skills. Abstract

Events longer than 50 meters require some tactical skills in order to manage the increase of fatigue, such as distributing the effort evenly over the whole distance. Kinaesthetic differentiation skills are required to achieve a very high precision of the movements. The repeatability of two procedures, aimed to measure the kinaesthetic differentiation abilities of swimmers was studied and the correlations between the actual performances and the expected performances with respect to gender and to the degree of change in velocity, were observed. Collecting the data in a single day and during four days running resulted in reliable results. Male swimmers seem to differentiate better than females and show a generally higher coefficient of correlation between the actual and the expected performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
