Em todo movimento fascista o culto ao líder é um dos elementos centrais do discurso ideológico, pois neste indivíduo são congregados os valores sociais, políticos e culturais do movimento. Plínio Salgado foi o líder da Ação Integralista Brasileira – movimento de orientação fascista que surgiu no Brasil na década de 1930. E para se apresentar como líder inconteste dos integralistas, valeu-se de todo o imaginário messiânico, que tinha grande impacto na mentalidade social brasileira da época, surgindo quase como um novo Tiradentes, numa espécie de cristianização do herói. No presente texto, discutiremos a utilização do imaginário messiânico, a partir de simbolismos cristãos e da figura de Tiradentes na construção da imagem idealizada de Plínio Salgado como “Chefe Nacional” da Ação Integralista Brasileira.

A arborização urbana apresenta um aspecto fundamental para o planejamento das cidades por trazer alguns benefícios aos cidadãos. Este estudo objetivou realizar um inventário qualiquantitativo da arborização urbana do município de Santana, Amapá, Brasil. O bairro da Fonte Nova pesquisado está sob as coordenadas 0o,00'58,47' S e 51o10’27,71’’ O. A coleta de dados foi realizada aplicando-se o método de inventário quali-quantitativo, do tipo censo. Foi avaliada a fitossanidade, de acordo com a aparência física da planta. Além disso, foram mensurados a altura total e o DAP (diâmetro à altura do peito), de todos os indivíduos. Foram inventariados 212 indivíduos, distribuídos em 12 famílias botânicas e 27 espécies. As famílias mais abundantes foram: Anacardiaceae (77 ind.), Fabaceae (50) e Arecacea (36). Foi encontrada uma área basal total de 20,41 m² para o bairro de estudo. As espécies com maiores densidades relativas foram: Mangifera indica L. (31,13%); Cocos nucifera L. (16,04%); Andira parviflora Ducke (6,60%). Esses resultados demonstram a falta de planejamento prévio para a arborização do bairro estudado, baseado na desigualdade de distribuição das espécies dentro do bairro.

Increased levels of periodontal pathogens disrupt the homeostasis between the host and its microbiota and increase susceptibility to periodontal diseases. Periodontitis increases the serum concentration of mannose-binding lectin (MBL), which exacerbates local inflammatory processes. In animal studies, sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) was associated with protection against inflammation. This study analyzed the influence of non-surgical periodontal treatment on serum levels of MBL and SIRT1.Forty patients with periodontitis and 38 periodontally healthy individuals (aged 45 to 79 years) were included. Periodontitis patients received scaling and root planing using machine driven and hand instruments. Clinical parameters, inflammatory biomarkers, MBL, and SIRT1 levels were measured at baseline and at post-treatment.For all patients, an inverse correlation was observed between serum concentrations of MBL and SIRT1 (r = -0.30; P = 0.006). Periodontal treatment reduced serum concentrations of MBL (1,099.35 ± 916.59 to 861.42 ± 724.82 ng/mL; P 0.001) and C-reactive protein (6.05 ± 8.99 to 2.49 ± 2.89 mg/L; P = 0.009). By contrast, SIRT1 serum levels increased (1.06 ± 1.03 to 1.66 ± 1.64 ng/mL; P 0.001) following periodontal treatment.Periodontal treatment was associated with decreased serum concentrations of MBL and CRP and increased serum levels of SIRT1. Prospective studies are needed to assess the impact of these biomarkers on pathophysiology of periodontitis.

Optimal cardiac function requires appropriate contractile proteins in each heart chamber. Atria require slow myosins to act as variable reservoirs, while ventricles demand fast myosin for swift pumping functions. Hence, myosin is under chamber-biased cis-regulatory control to achieve this functional distribution. Failure in proper regulation of myosin genes can lead to severe congenital heart dysfunction. The precise regulatory input leading to cardiac chamber-biased expression remains uncharted. To address this, we computationally and molecularly dissected the quail Slow Myosin Heavy Chain III (SMyHC III) promoter that drives specific gene expression to the atria to uncover the regulatory information leading to chamber expression and understand their evolutionary origins. We show that SMyHC III gene states are autonomously orchestrated by a complex nuclear receptor cis-regulatory element (cNRE), a 32- bp sequence with hexanucleotide binding repeats. Using in vivo transgenic assays in zebrafish and mouse models, we demonstrate that preferential atrial expression is achieved by the combinatorial regulatory input composed of atrial activation motifs and ventricular repression motifs. Through comparative genomics, we provide evidence that the cNRE emerged from an endogenous viral element, most likely through infection of an ancestral host germline. Our study reveals an evolutionary pathway to cardiac chamber-specific expression.

The anti-fascist and feminist writer, journalist and activist Maria Teresa Horta (1937) was a staunch opponent of the Portuguese regime and conservatism, developing, over the years of the Portuguese dictatorship and in the democratization period, an intellectual production in Journalism and Literature areas. Her work, which must be understood as a whole, was at the heart of the denunciation of the repression and violence of the dictatorial government and the defense of freedom, especially for women, subjected to the regime's gender ideology, whose bodies were severely regulated and disciplined. This thesis aims to understand the development of Maria Teresa Horta anti-fascist and feminist thought during the final years of Salazarism and the beginning of democratization after the Revolu??o dos Cravos and following years, defending the thesis that her intellectual production constitutes a political activity essential for the study of the Political History of Portugal in the period. To achieve this goal, we chose the the period between 1968 and 1977, with the beginning of her work in the newspaper A Capital (1968) and the publication of Mulheres de Abril (1977), using different sources: journalistic, literary production, life history and judicial archives. Due to the sources diversity used and the complexity of the analyzed object, we use several methodological tools such as Discourse Analysis and Biographical Narrative. In addition, we make use of theoretical tools: Political History, Intellectual History and History of Women, in addition to knowledge of sister sciences such as Sociology, Philosophy and Literature. The research conduction and analysis of the sources showed us how Body and Freedom are the most highlight significants in the Hortian production of the period, constituting the basis of her intellectual thought and the anti-fascist and feminist struggle undertaken. A modelagem de distribuicao em classes diametricas e um dos meios de indicar opotencial uso de uma comunidade florestal. Nesse sentido, objetivou-se avaliar aestrutura diametrica de especies lenhosas da Amazonia por meio das Funcoes deDensidades Probabilisticas (FDP’s). O estudo foi desenvolvido no municipio de PortoGrande, Amapa. Foi instalada uma parcela permanente de 100 m x 100 m, e feitasmensuracoes em todos os individuos que apresentaram diâmetro a altura do peito(DAP) igual ou superior a 10,0 cm. Para as analises de representatividade para osajustes das funcoes foi utilizado o programa "R development core team". O criterio deinformacao de Akaike – AIC foi empregado como criterio de selecao. Os resultadosencontrados indicaram que a funcao Gamma foi a que melhor descreveu a distribuicaodiametrica para Manilkara huberi e Pseudoxandra cuspidata. Ja as especies Protiumdecandrum e Virola venosa a funcao Log-Normal foram as que apresentaram melhoresaderencias. De modo geral, a funcao normal nao apresentou uma aderencia satisfatoriapara todas as especies. Conclui-se que, a funcao Gamma proporcionou o melhor ajustepara as especies e a distribuicao diametrica pode ser utilizada como mecanismo paraexploracao volumetrica de madeira e projecao da producao futura.

Background: Although vitamin D is related to cardiorespiratory fitness and muscle strength, there is no evidence in the literature about the genetic influence of the response to the increase in body vitamin D. Therefore, we evaluate the effect of longitudinal supplementation of vitamin D on parameters of physical fitness in monozygotic twins.Methods: In total, 74 participants were included, with a mean age of 25 years, divided into two groups, one group received supplementation with cholecalciferol for 60 days and the other group did not. Cardiorespiratory fitness and muscle strength were measured before and after supplementation, through maximal treadmill tests and dynamometry, respectively. Wilcoxon tests were used to compare intra-group results and the Mann-Whitney test to examine intergroup differences.Results: There was an increase in the serum concentration of vitamin D in participants who ingested the supplementation. Cardiorespiratory fitness improved after supplementation through increases in the values of maximum oxygen consumption of 28% (P Conclusion: 60 days of cholecalciferol supplementation improved cardiorespiratory fitness and upper limb muscle strength.Trial registration: RBR-3qy2f2. Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES Introdução: A relação do ponto ótimo cardiorrespiratório com medidas de composição corporal e variáveis bioquímicas é desconhecida, bem como a influência de fatores genéticos e ambientais sobre esta variável. Além disso, são raras as pesquisas que utilizam gêmeos discordantes para o exercício físico. Objetivo: Avaliar a aptidão cardiorrespiratória, composição corporal e parâmetros bioquímicos em irmãos gêmeos concordantes e discordantes para o exercício físico. Métodos: Estudo transversal com gêmeos adultos. A amostra consistiu em 102 indivíduos, 72,5% do sexo feminino e 27,5% do sexo masculino com idade média 25,4 ± 5,69. A coleta de dados foi realizada entre os anos de 2016 e 2018. No dia 1, os indivíduos foram submetidos a uma avaliação de aptidão física, incluindo medidas de antropometria, composição corporal por Absorciometria de feixe duplo de raios X, e teste de esforço cardiorrespiratório. No dia 2, amostras de sangue periférico foram coletadas para determinar o perfil lipídico e a glicemia de jejum. Utilizou-se a correlação de Spearman para a verificação da herdabilidade e para relacionar as variáveis com o ponto ótimo cardiorrespiratório. The aim of this study was to evaluate the differences in the metabolic profile and body composition of monozygotic (MZ) twins concordant and discordant for the practice of physical exercise. The sample consisted of 92 MZ twins (72.5% female and 27.5% male, mean age 25.4 ± 5.69 years), registered with the Brazilian Registry of Twins, residing in Natal, Brazil. Data collection was carried out between the years 2016 and 2018. On day 1, subjects underwent a whole-body fitness evaluation, including measures of weight, height, body composition by Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry and the Cardiorespiratory Exercise Test. On day 2, 10 ml blood samples were collected (overnight fasting) to determine the lipid profile and fasting glucose. The sample was separated into three groups: Active Concordant twins (Concordant A, n = 44 subjects), Inactive Concordant twins (Concordant I, n = 22 subjects) and Discordant pairs for Physical Exercise (Discordant PE, n = 26 subjects). The results demonstrated a difference between the discordant twins for exercise and also between the active versus sedentary groups, indicating a causal effect of exercise on the fat percentage, maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max) and second ventilatory threshold variables. Between groups, a difference was also observed between the groups in ventilatory threshold, very low-density lipoprotein and triglycerides. We concluded that, regardless of genetics, the practice of physical exercise was sufficient to generate alterations in body composition and VO2max in MZ twins, but not in the lipid profile or fasting glucose.

Background: Atherosclerosis and periodontal disease (PD) are inflammatory diseases that have been shown in studies to have a direct association. Mannose-binding lectin (MBL) is an immune system protein that binds to periodontal pathogens favoring phagocytosis. Conversely, increased serum sirtuin-1 (SIRT1) concentration reduces the inflammatory process. Methods: This was a prospective, case-controlled study that analyzed serum concentration of biomarkers in patients with or without coronary artery disease (CAD) and PD. A total of 78 patients were evaluated: 20 healthy individuals, 18 patients with CAD, 20 patients with PD, and 20 patients with both PD and CAD. Clinical and laboratory characteristics were analyzed before and after nonsurgical treatment of PD and also at two equivalent times in patients without PD. Serum MBL and SIRT1 concentration were analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: A negative correlation was observed between changes in serum concentration of MBL and SIRT1 ( r = −0.30; p = 0.006). Comparison between pre- and post-treatment of PD showed a reduction in MBL levels (886.27 ± 906.72 versus 689.94 ± 808.36; p = 0.002) and an increase in SIRT1 values (0.80 ± 1.01 versus 1.49 ± 1.55; p = 0.005) in patients with PD and without CAD. The same result was observed in patients with PD and CAD for MBL and SIRT1, respectively, of 1312.43 ± 898.21 versus 1032.90 ± 602.52 ( p = 0.010) and 1.32 ± 1.0 versus 1.82 ± 1.75 ( p = 0.044). Conclusion: PD treatment reduced MBL serum concentration and increased SIRT1 serum concentration in patients with and without CAD.

O atual cenário sobre o uso dos recursos florestais de maneira desordenada, fez com que se buscassem meios para valorar e utilizar os componentes não madeireiros. No entanto, essa alternativa vem sendo adotada ainda de forma insipiente na Amazônia, mesmo buscando o contexto de economia sustentável. O presente trabalho foi desenvolvido com o intuito de reunir avaliações e análises sobre a importância de componentes não madeireiros na viabilidade econômica da atividade florestal na Amazônia, incluindo abordagens sobre Produtos Florestais Não Madeireiros e Serviços Ambientais. Os Produtos Florestais Não-Madeireiros (PFNM) e os Serviços Ambientais tornaram-se uma alternativa para preencher várias lacunas econômicas de pequenas e grandes comunidades, pois versa sobre a manutenção de grandes extensões de florestas por meio da geração de bens e serviços em pequena e larga escala. Muitos trabalhos têm buscado o desenvolvimento e aplicação de métodos quali-quantitativos e conhecimentos ecológicos para valorar diferentes produtos oriundos das florestas e diminuir a pressão sobre a intensa produção madeireira. Neste levantamento bibliográfico nota-se um número significativo de estudos sobre o potencial dos PFNM para geração de renda e para a conservação do meio ambiente, e não menos importante, os serviços ambientais que podem ser prestados como medidas de compensação ambiental.

Vitamin D supplementation is widely used. However, there is no consensus on the use and dosage of this supplement and the existing recommendations arise from studies based on the benefits that this nutrient can facilitate in bones. In addition, individual genetics can influence the response to supplementation, therefore, research involving monozygotic twins aims to reduce these differences in phenotypic responses. The objective of this randomised controlled study is to examine the effect of vitamin D supplementation on body composition and the expression of the vitamin D receptor (VDR) mRNA. An intervention was performed through supplementation with cholecalciferol at the concentration of 2000 IU in 90 healthy adult monozygotic twins (male or female pairs) for 2 months. The findings showed that serum vitamin D concentration increased by 65% and VDR gene expression sixty times (p = 0.001). Changes in body composition parameters were observed regarding body fat and lean mass. Our results indicate that an increase in serum vitamin D concentration may have potential therapeutic implications.

Maria Teresa Horta (1937-) é um dos nomes mais importantes da literatura de autoria feminina em Portugal do século XX. A sua produção tem início durante a ditadura salazarista, e se caracterizou por um forte combate ao regime, o que lhe rendeu duras perseguições políticas. Desta maneira, a sua produção do período deve ser analisada com um atento olhar histórico e político, visto que o viés ideológico político perpassa toda a sua produção, principalmente nas publicações entre 1961 e 1977, ano em que publica Mulheres de Abril. Diversas foram as suas formas de se expressar e se manifestar contra o regime político vigente, entretanto, o uso da imagem do corpo feminino e das questões inerentes ao sujeito feminino na sociedade portuguesa da época, como forma de resistência ao Estado Novo, são talvez as que se tornaram mais características de sua obra, e motivo pelo qual hoje é amplamente conhecida. Desta maneira, o presente se propõe a analisar a relação que Teresa Horta constrói entre poesia, corpo e liberdade na sua produção entre 1971 e 1977, tomando em consideração o contexto político vigente, as suas ações e participações políticas e as políticas estatais em relação à mulher.Palavras-chave: Ditadura; Poesia; Corpo; Feminismo; Maria Teresa Horta. In this way, her production from the period must be analyzed with a careful historical and political view, since an ideological political slant permeates her entire production, mainly in the publications between 1961 and 1977, the year in which she published Mulheres de Abril. There were seve­ral ways of expressing and manifesting against the current political regime, howe­ver, the use of the image of the female body and the issues inherent to the female subject in Portuguese society at the time, as a form of resistance to the Estado Novo, are perhaps what has become to be seen as more characteristic of her work, which is why it is widely known. Thus, this paper intends to analyze the relationship that Teresa Horta builds between poetry, the body and freedom in her production be­tween 1971 and 1977, taking into account the political context in vigor, her political action and participation, as well as the state policies in relation to women. No presente artigo objetivamos analisar a construção da identidade da Ação Integralista Brasileira. Para isso, refletiremos como essa identidade foi constituída através da contraposição dos “valores sociais” integralistas aos “defeitos” daqueles que consideravam como inimigos. Esse fenômeno fica evidente em praticamente todos os textos integralistas, sejam eles em livros, revistas ou jornais. Esse discurso embasava a práxis política integralista e era baseado em um princípio básico de Plínio Salgado: a luta entre “espiritualismo” e “materialismo”

Resumo O estudo teve como objetivo correlacionar a idade óssea, os componentes antropométricos e a aptidão física em 149 crianças de 8 a 14 anos. Foram aferidos estatura, massa corporal, perímetros de braço e de perna, perímetros de braço e de perna corrigidos, diâmetros bicristailíaco e biacromial, dobras cutâneas tricipital e perna, teste motores de agilidade, velocidade de membros superiores e força explosiva de membros inferiores e superiores e o exame de raios X de mão e punho para verificar maturação. Nos resultados, encontramos correlação positiva entre a idade óssea e as demais variáveis, com exceção das dobras cutâneas tricipital, de perna e teste de agilidade. Dessa forma, verificamos a influência da maturação sobre componentes antropométricos e motores. Assim, possibilitamos uma melhor forma de controle dos processos de detecção, seleção e orientação esportiva. Abstract The study aimed to correlate bone age, anthropometric measurements and physical fitness in 149 young volleyball players between ages 8 and 14. Height, weight, arm and leg circumferences, adjusted arm and leg circumferences, bi-iliac and biacromial breadths, tricipital and leg skin fold thicknesses, physical fitness tests, coordination and explosive strength of the upper and lower limbs were measured, in addition to x-rays of hand and wrist to check for maturation. Results showed positive correlation between bone age and all other variables, except tricipital skinfold, leg skinfold and agility. We concluded that maturation has influence on anthropometric and motor components, leading to a better control in the process of selecting and promoting young athletes. Resumen El estudio tuvo como objetivo observar la correlación entre edad ósea, variables antropométricas y condición física en 149 niños de 8 a 14 años. Se midieron la estatura, la masa corporal, la circunferencia del brazo y de la pierna, la circunferencia corregida del brazo y de la pierna, el diámetro bi-cresta ilíaca y biacromial, y el pliegue cutáneo del tríceps. Se hicieron pruebas motoras de agilidad de las piernas, de velocidad de los miembros superiores y de fuerza explosiva de los miembros superiores e inferiores, y se hicieron radiografías de la mano y el puño para verificar la maduración. En los resultados se encontró una correlación positiva entre la edad ósea y otras variables, con la excepción del pliegue cutáneo del tríceps y la prueba de agilidad de las piernas. Por tanto, se observa la influencia de la maduración de las variables antropométricas y motoras, lo que permite una mejor manera de controlar los procesos de detección, selección y orientación deportiva.

Background Nonsyndromic cleft lip and/or palate (NSCL/P) is the most common craniofacial malformation. Due to the anatomical defect present in the alveolar process, these patients tend to exhibit more dental anomalies. The aim of this study was to identify the prevalence of dental anomalies in patients with NSCL/P by obtaining orthodontic documentation from Brazilian Centers for cleft lip and palate treatment. Material and Methods A retrospective analysis (2000-2014) was conducted on orthodontic archives, radiographs and medical records of NSCL/P of 524 patients under orthodontic treatment. Panoramic radiographs and intra-oral photographs were examined to identify these anomalies. Categorical variables were expressed in terms of frequencies and percentages and analyzed using the Chi-Square test. The level of significance was set at p≤0.05 in all analyses. The objective of this study was to evaluate the genetic and environmental contribution to variation in aerobic power in monozygotic (MZ) and dizygotic (DZ) twins. The sample consisted of 20 MZ individuals (12 females and 8 males) and 16 DZ individuals (12 females and 4 males), aged from 8 to 26 years, residents in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte. The twins were assessed by a multistage fitness test. The rate of heritability found for aerobic power was 77%. Based on the results, the estimated heritability was largely responsible for the differences in aerobic power. This implies that such measures are under strong genetic influence.

Esse discurso embasava a práxis política integralista e era baseado em um princípio básico de Plínio Salgado: a luta entre “espiritualismo” e “materialismo”.

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVES: Glycoprotein inhibitors (abciximab, eptifibatide and tirofiban) are used in patients with unstable angina and non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction before percutaneous coronary intervention. Of these, tirofiban is the least effective. We hypothesized that the response to tirofiban might be associated with glycoprotein gene mutations. DESIGN AND SETTING: Prospective study at Emergency Unit, Heart Institute (InCor), University of São Paulo. METHOD: Intrahospital evolution and platelet aggregation in response to tirofiban were analyzed in relation to four glycoprotein mutations in 50 patients indicated for percutaneous coronary intervention: 17 (34%) with unstable angina and 33 (66%) with non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction. Platelet aggregation was analyzed using the Born method. Blood samples were obtained before and one hour after tirofiban infusion. Glycoproteins Ia (807C/T ), Ib (Thr/Met) , IIb (Ile/Ser ) and IIIa (PIA ) were the mutations selected. RESULTS: Hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes, smoking, previous coronary artery disease and stroke were similar between the groups. Mutant glycoprotein IIIa genotypes had lower platelet aggregation before tirofiban administration than that of the wild genotype (41.0% ± 22.1% versus 55.9% ± 20.8%; P = 0.035). Mutant glycoprotein IIIa genotypes correlated moderately with lower platelet inhibition (r = -0.31; P = 0.030). After tirofiban administration, platelet glycoprotein Ia, Ib, IIb and IIIa mutations did not influence the degree of inhibition of platelet aggregation or intrahospital mortality. CONCLUSIONS: Mutations of glycoproteins Ia, Ib, IIb and IIIa did not influence platelet aggregation in response to tirofiban in patients with unstable angina and non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction. RESUMO CONTEXTO E OBJETIVOS: Inibidores da glicoproteína (abciximab, eptifibatide, tirofiban) são utilizados em pacientes com angina instável e infarto do miocárdio sem elevação do segmento ST (IAMSSST) antes da intervenção coronária percutânea. Dentre eles, o tirofiban é o menos eficaz. Nossa hipótese é que a resposta ao tirofiban possa estar associada a mutações no gene da glicoproteína. DESENHO E LOCAL: Estudo prospectivo na Unidade de Emergência do Instituto do Coração (InCor), Universidade de São Paulo (USP). MÉTODOS: Foram analisadas a evolução intra-hospitalar e agregabilidade plaquetária em resposta ao tirofiban de 4 mutações da glicoproteína em 50 pacientes com indicação para intervenção coronária percutânea, 17 (34%) com angina instável e 33 (66%) com IAMSSST. A agregação plaquetária foi analisada pelo método de Born. Amostras de sangue foram obtidas antes e uma hora após infusão do tirofiban. As glicoproteínas Ia (807C/T ), Ib (Thr/Met ), IIb (Ile/Ser ) e IIIa (PIA ) foram as mutações selecionadas. RESULTADOS: Hipertensão, dislipidemia, diabetes, tabagismo, doença coronariana e acidente vascular cerebral prévios foram semelhantes entre os grupos. Observou-se menor agregabilidade plaquetária dos genótipos mutantes da glicoproteína IIIa antes da administração de tirofiban do genótipo selvagem (41% ± 22% versus 56% ± 21%; P = 0,035). Genótipos mutantes da glicoproteína IIIa correlacionaram-se moderadamente com menor inibição plaquetária (r = -0,31; P = 0,030). Após a administração tirofiban, as mutações das glicoproteínas Ia, Ib, IIb, e IIIa não influenciaram o grau de inibição da agregação plaquetária e mortalidade intra-hospitalar. CONCLUSÕES: Mutações das glicoproteínas Ia, Ib, IIb e IIIa não influenciaram a agregação plaquetária em resposta ao tirofiban nos pacientes com angina instável e IAMSSST.

Notch3 signaling is fundamental for arterial specification of systemic vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). However, the developmental role and signaling properties of the Notch3 receptor in the mouse pulmonary artery remain unknown. Here, we demonstrate that Notch3 is expressed selectively in pulmonary artery VSMCs, is activated from late fetal to early postnatal life, and is required to maintain the morphological characteristics and smooth muscle gene expression profile of the pulmonary artery after birth. Using a conditional knock-out mouse model, we show that Notch3 receptor activation in VSMCs is Jagged1-dependent. In vitro VSMC lentivirus-mediated Jagged1 knockdown, confocal localization analysis, and co-culture experiments revealed that Notch3 activation is cell-autonomous and occurs through the physical engagement of Notch3 and VSMC-derived Jagged1 in the interior of the same cell. Although the current models of mammalian Notch signaling involve a two-cell system composed of a signal-receiving cell that expresses a Notch receptor on its surface and a neighboring signal-sending cell that provides membrane-bound activating ligand, our data suggest that pulmonary artery VSMC Notch3 activation is cell-autonomous. This unique mechanism of Notch activation may play an important role in the maturation of the pulmonary artery during the transition to air breathing.

Em seu renomado livro O cânone Ocidental, Harold Bloom apresenta os vinte e seis escritores obrigatórios para conhecer a literatura ocidental. Dentre eles, figuram apenas três nomes femininos. O livro de Bloom é tomado como exemplo neste trabalho para se pensar o silenciamento e invisibilidade das mulheres na historiografia literária ocidental e as teorias da crítica literária. Partindo dos estudos desenvolvidos pela História das Mulheres e da Leitura e pelos Estudos Culturais, que, além de contestar o binarismo feminino/masculino, contribuem para dar visibilidade às mulheres e aos seus escritos, o presente discute a importância de uma crítica literária revisionista do cânone, pautada nas diferenças culturais. In his renowned book O cânone Ocidental, Harold Bloom presents twenty-six writers required to know the Western literature. Among them there are only three female names. Bloom’s book is taken, in this work, as an example to think about women silencing and invisibilit in Western literary history and about theories of literary criticism. Based on the studies conducted by the History of Women and History of Reading and the Cultural Studies, which not only contests the male / female binarism, but also contribute to give visibility to women and their writings, this work discusses the importance of revisionist literary criticism canon , based on cultural differences.

Identification of cardiac mechanisms of retinoic acid (RA) signaling, description of homologous genetic circuits in Ciona intestinalis and consolidation of views on the secondary heart field have fundamental, but still unrecognized implications for vertebrate heart evolution. Utilizing concepts from evolution, development, zoology, and circulatory physiology, we evaluate the strengths of animal models and scenarios for the origin of vertebrate hearts. Analyzing chordates, lower and higher vertebrates, we propose a paradigm picturing vertebrate hearts as advanced circulatory pumps formed by segments, chambered or not, devoted to inflow or outflow. We suggest that chambers arose not as single units, but as components of a peristaltic pump divided by patterning events, contrasting with scenarios assuming that chambers developed one at a time. Recognizing RA signaling as a potential mechanism patterning cardiac segments, we propose to use it as a tool to scrutinize the phylogenetic origins of cardiac chambers within chordates. Finally, we integrate recent ideas on cardiac development such as the ballooning and secondary/anterior heart field paradigms, showing how inflow/outflow patterning may interact with developmental mechanisms suggested by these models.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi testar diferentes modelos matematicos, visando selecionar uma equacao para estimar o teor de nitrogenio total em Anadenanthera colubrina em Floresta-PE. Esta especie foi selecionada a partir de informacoes de um inventario florestal realizado na area de estudo, utilizando-se dados de 10 arvores. Para cada arvore-amostra foi obtida a circunferencia a altura do peito (CAP) a 1,30 m, a qual foi convertida em diâmetro (DAP). Posteriormente, as arvores foram cortadas e mensuradas suas alturas totais. Foram ajustados 20 modelos matematicos para nitrogenio total, onde a equacao 5 apresentou estatisticas melhores que a equacao 1 sendo que estas apresentam distribuicoes residuais semelhantes. Entre as equacoes ajustadas, a equacao Y i = 35,815 + 3,4418.DAP i ² - 0,168.(DAP i ²H i ) foi a que obteve resultados mais satisfatorios, sendo que por meio desta, pode-se estimar o teor de nitrogenio em Anadenanthera colubrina que esta sendo exportado.

O objetivo do trabalho foi testar modelos matematicos, visando estimar a quantidade de nitrogenio total em Mimosa ophtalmocentra . O estudo foi realizado em uma area de Caatinga localizada no municipio de Floresta-PE. para coleta de amostras para determinacao de nitrogenio (N) f oram selecionados 10 individuos de M. ophtalmocentra . Em todos as arvores foram mensuradas suas circunferencias a 1,30 m do solo (CAP), transformadas em diâmetros (DAP), e suas alturas totais (H) . Com a obtencao dos dados foram ajustados dez modelos matematicos para estimativa de N em funcao de DAP e H. Para selecionar a melhor equacao foram utilizados o indice de ajuste (IA), o erro padrao da estimativa e a analise da distribuicao grafica dos residuos. Dentre os modelos ajustados, N i = e (2,19661+0,45611.ln(DAPi²)) e N i = e ( 2,19661 + 0,45611 ln(DAP i ³) foram os de melhores estatisticas , mas o segundo teve maior IA, sendo entao o indicado para estimar nitrogenio total em M. ophtalmocentra.

Clara cells (CCs) are a morphologically and operationally heterogeneous population of Secretoglobin Scgb1a1-expressing secretory cells that are crucial for airway homeostasis and post-injury repair. Analysis of the extent and origin of CC diversity are limited by knowledge of genes expressed in these cells and their precursors. To identify novel putative markers of CCs and explore the origins of CC diversity, we characterized global changes in gene expression in embryonic lungs in which CCs do not form due to conditional disruption of Notch signaling (Rbpjk(CNULL)). Microarray profiling, Real Time PCR (qRT-PCR), and RNA in situ hybridization (ISH) identified eleven genes downregulated in the E18.5 airways of Rbpjk(cnull) compared to controls, nearly half not previously known to mark CCs. ISH revealed that several genes had overlapping but distinct domains of expression of in the normal developing lung (E18.5). Notably, Reg3g, Chad, Gabrp and Lrrc26 were enriched in proximal airways, Hp in the distal airways and Upk3a in clusters of cells surrounding Neuroepithelial Bodies (NEBs). Seven of the eleven genes, including Reg3g, Hp, and Upk3a, were expressed in the adult lung in CCs in a pattern similar to that observed in the developing airways. qRT-PCR-based analysis of gene expression of CCs isolated from different airway regions of B1-EGFP reporter mice corroborated the spatial enrichment in gene expression observed by ISH. Our study identifies candidate markers for CC-precursors and CCs and supports the idea that the diversification of the CC phenotype occurs already during embryonic development.

genetic and environmental factors contribute to the development of cardiovascular risk and that influence can be differentiated by factors characteristic of each population, age and sex. Aim: To investigate the heritability of anthropometric and biochemical markers as predictors of cardiovascular risk in men and women of different age groups, using the method of twins. Methods: A sample of 88 subjects and of these 52 children and adolescents (08-17 years old) 32 monozygotic (20 female and 12 male) and 20 dizygotic (12 female and 08 male) and 36 adults (18-28 years age) 24 monozygotic (08 female and 16 male) and 12 dizygotic (06 female and 06 male), living in the metropolitan region of Natal / RN, Brazil. Anthropometric measures were taken as the height, body mass, waist circumference (WC), sum of skinfolds (ΣDC), fat percentage CUN-BAE, BMI and conicity. Biochemical markers analyzed were: fasting glucose (GLU), total cholesterol (COL), HDL-C, LDL-C and triglycerides (TG). After processing the data the index of heritability (h2) = (S ² MZ) / S ² DZ (DZ S ²) X100 was applied disaggregated by sex and age. Results: The variables showed differential heritability of behavior for men and women, depending on age. The variables with the highest heritability values were ΣDC, GLU, HDL, TG, in men and BMI, WC, ΣDC, GLU, HDL-C and TG in women. And more influenced by the environment variables were: body mass, BMI, Chol, LDL-C in men; body mass and LDL-C in women. Conclusion: Differences index of heritability by gender for cardiovascular risk predictors may assist in planning specific intervention strategies according to gender and stage of life of that individual. It is from the level of environmental influence that can run interventions for changes of components related to cardiovascular risk Os fatores genéticos e ambientais contribuem para o desenvolvimento do risco cardiovascular e essa influência pode ser diferenciada por fatores característicos de cada população, idade e sexo. Objetivo: investigar a herdabilidade de variáveis antropométricas e marcadores bioquímicos como preditores do risco cardiovascular em homens e mulheres de diferentes faixas etárias, utilizando o método de gêmeos. Métodos: Amostra composta por 130 gêmeos, sendo do sexo feminino 42 monozigotos e 32 dizigotos e do sexo masculino 28 monozigotos e 28 dizigotos, residentes na região metropolitana de Natal/RN, Brasil. Como medidas antropométricas foram aferidas a estatura, massa corporal, circunferência da cintura (CC), somatório de dobras cutâneas (∑DC), percentual de gordura CUN-BAE, IMC e índice de conicidade. Os marcadores bioquímicos analisados foram: glicemia de jejum (GLI), colesterol total (COL), HDL-C, LDL-C e triglicerídeos (TG). Após o tratamento dos dados foi aplicado o índice de herdabilidade (h2) = ((S² DZ S² MZ) / S² DZ) x 100; separado por sexo e idade. Resultados: As variáveis apresentaram comportamento de hereditariedade diferenciado para homens e mulheres, dependendo da idade. As variáveis com maior herdabilidade foram: ∑DC, GLI, HDL, TG, nos homens; e IMC, CC, ∑DC, GLI, HDL-C e TG nas mulheres. E as variáveis mais influenciadas pelo ambiente foram: Massa, IMC, COL, LDL-C, nos homens; massa e LDL-C nas mulheres. Conclusão: As diferenças por sexo do índice de herdabilidade para os preditores do risco cardiovascular podem auxiliar no planejamento de estratégias de intervenção específicas de acordo com o sexo e estágio da vida desse indivíduo. É a partir do nível de influência ambiental que poderá correr as intervenções para modificações dos componentes relacionados ao risco cardiovascular

Before women have access to writing, and to autobiographical writing, the female subject was only known by the male voice, in other words, by the male’s imaginary and stereotypes. The women silence breaking allowed to unveil this world, and also allowed that the women could construct their own identity (s), what was before forged by Western patriarchal model and often misogynistic. Based on the viewpoint that the diaries and letters, as autobiographical writings, are pieces that date back to a historical time, to the time of writing, not just containing dates or vestiges of the daily writer, but the context in which he lived, this work has the objective to analyze how Florbela Espanca (1894-1930), from the diverse self-representation and female identities and self-analysis reflections, shows the intimate and social female universe in her time, in her diary and letters of the last year. Antes de a mulher ter acesso à escrita, e à escrita do "eu", só se conhecia o sujeito feminino pela voz masculina, ou seja, pelo seu imaginário e estereótipos. O rompimento do silêncio das mulheres permitiu que o mundo delas fosse desvelado, que elas buscassem construir a(s) sua(s) identidade(s), antes forjadas por um modelo ocidental patriarcalista e, muitas vezes, misógino. Como os diários e cartas, enquanto escritas íntimas, são peças que remontam ao momento da escritura, contendo não apenas datações e os vestígios do cotidiano do sujeito escritor, mas do contexto em que viveu, o presente texto objetiva analisar de que forma Florbela Espanca (1894-1930), a partir da construção de autorrepresentações e identidades femininas variadas e de questionamentos e reflexões autoanalíticas, evidencia os conflitos do universo íntimo e social feminino da sua época, em seu diário e epistolografia do último ano.

Clara cells of mammalian airways have multiple functions and are morphologically heterogeneous. Although Notch signaling is essential for the development of these cells, it is unclear how Notch influences Clara cell specification and if diversity is established among Clara cell precursors. Here we identify expression of the secretoglobin Scgb3a2 and Notch activation as early events in a program of secretory cell fate determination in developing murine airways. We show that Scgb3a2 expression in vivo is Notch-dependent at early stages and ectopically induced by constitutive Notch1 activation, and also that in vitro Notch signaling together with the pan-airway transcription factor Ttf1 (Nkx2.1) synergistically regulate secretoglobin gene transcription. Furthermore, we identified a subpopulation of secretory precursors juxtaposed to presumptive neuroepithelial bodies (NEBs), distinguished by their strong Scgb3a2 and uroplakin 3a ( Upk3a ) signals and reduced Ccsp (Scgb1a1) expression. Genetic ablation of Ascl1 prevented NEB formation and selectively interfered with the formation of this subpopulation of cells. Lineage labeling of Upk3a -expressing cells during development showed that these cells remain largely uncommitted during embryonic development and contribute to Clara and ciliated cells in the adult lung. Together, our findings suggest a role for Notch in the induction of a Clara cell-specific program of gene expression, and reveals that the NEB microenvironment in the developing airways is a niche for a distinct subset of Clara-like precursors.
