Background The food system is a social determinant of health and leverage point for reducing diet-related racial inequities. Yet, food system interventions have not resulted in sustained improvement in dietary outcomes for underrepresented minorities living in neighborhoods with a history of disinvestment. Research is needed to illuminate the dynamics structuring food systems in racialized neighborhoods to inform intervention development. Objective Conduct participatory research examining the complexity and inequity of food systems in historically redlined neighborhoods to identify feedback mechanisms to leverage in efforts to transform system outcomes for racial equity. Methods We conducted a mixed-methods study in Cleveland, Ohio, USA from 2018-21 using participatory system dynamic modeling with 30 academic and community partners, in-depth qualitative interviews with 22 key stakeholders, and public convenings with 250 local food policy council affiliates. Data were synthesized into causal loop diagrams depicting feedback mechanisms reinforcing or balancing neighborhood-level food system dynamics. Results We identified 10 feedback mechanisms structuring nutrition equity, which was identified as a meta-goal for food systems in racialized neighborhoods. Feedback mechanisms were organized in three domains: 1. meeting basic food needs with dignity (i.e., side hustle, government benefits, emergency food assistance, stigma and stereotypes), 2. local food supply and demand dynamics (i.e., healthy food retail, job security, food culture and norms), and 3. community empowerment and food sovereignty (i.e., community power, urban agriculture, risk of gentrification). Five exogenous factors moderate feedback dynamics: neighborhood crisis, neighborhood investments, household costs, government benefit funding, and voter participation. Conclusions We identified nutrition equity as an overarching goal for local food systems, which reflects a state of having freedom, agency, and dignity in food traditions resulting in people and communities healthy in body, mind, and spirit. It is a transformative goal designed to spur system-level interventions that further racial equity through improved local food system dynamics.

Purpose of Review Global warming and pollution are among the five major causes of global biodiversity loss, particularly in aquatic invertebrates which are highly diverse but understudied. In this review, we highlight advancements in current environmental studies investigating the interactive effects between warming and contaminants in freshwater and marine invertebrates. We not only focused on temperate regions but also synthesized information on the less studied Arctic/Antarctic and tropical regions. Recent Findings In general, the same combination of warming and contaminants may result in either additive or non-additive interactive effects depending on taxa, the response variable, life stage, genotype, exposure level, duration and order of exposure, and the number of exposed generations. For traditional contaminants such as metals and pesticides, combined effects with warming at the individual level were generally synergistic. Growing evidence suggests that multigenerational exposure can shift the interaction between warming and contaminants toward antagonism, while contemporary evolution may change the interaction type. Summary Our synthesis highlights the importance of temporal aspects in shaping interaction type, including order of exposure, ontogenetic effects, transgenerational effects, and evolution. The combination of laboratory experiments (to advance mechanistic understanding) and outdoor mesocosm studies or field observations (to increase realism) is needed to obtain comprehensive assessments of interactive effects of warming and pollutants from genes to ecosystems.

As most ecosystems are being challenged by multiple, co-occurring stressors, an important challenge is to understand and predict how stressors interact to affect biological responses. A popular approach is to design factorial experiments that measure biological responses to pairs of stressors and compare the observed response to a null model expectation. Unfortunately, we believe experiment sample sizes are inadequate to detect most non-null stressor interaction responses, greatly hindering progress. Determination of adequate sample size requires (i) knowledge of the detection ability of the inference method being used, and (ii) a consideration of the smallest biologically meaningful deviation from the null expectation. However, (i) has not been investigated and (ii) is yet to be discussed. Using both real and simulated data we show sample sizes typical of many experiments (

Perturbations such as climate change, invasive species and pollution, impact the functioning and diversity of ecosystems. But because there is no unique way to measure functioning and diversity, this leads to a ubiquitous and overwhelming variability in community-level responses, that is often seen as a barrier to prediction in ecology. Here, we show that this variability can instead provide insights into hidden features of a community’s functions and responses to perturbations. By first analysing a dataset of global change experiments in microbial soil systems we show that variability of functional and diversity responses to a given perturbation is not random: aggregate properties that are thought to be mechanistically similar tend to respond similarly. We then formalise this intuitive observation to demonstrate that the variability of community-level responses to perturbations is not only predictable, but that it can also be used to access hidden and useful information about population-level responses to perturbations (i.e., response diversity and scaling by species biomass). Our theory offers a baseline expectation for the variability of community-level responses to perturbations and helps to explain the complexity of ecological responses to global change.Significance StatementMeasures of biodiversity and ecosystem functioning show highly variable responses to a given perturbation. This variability is traditionally thought of as reflecting our inability to predict ecological responses to global change. Our work, however, finds that variability of community-level responses is itself predictable and can even be used to gain insights about how species respond to perturbations and collectively contribute to ecosystem functions.

Craniofacial sutures are fibrous connections between the flat bones in the skull, allowing a small amount of movement to absorb strain and load as long as they are patent. In the present study, we examined the histological appearance of facial suture lines in horses of different ages. The internasal, nasofrontal and maxillolacrimal sutures were macroscopically identified and extracted from the skulls of six horses aged 1 day (two horses), 5 days, 2, 6 and 9 years and prepared into histological samples. The suture lines were then examined for width, form, cell density and morphology, vascularisation and morphology of the surrounding tissue and compared based on the age of the horse. Although macroscopically the sutures became difficult to identify in the 6‐ and 9‐year‐old horses, histologically they were clearly visible in all samples, indicating that the sutures were patent and consisted of connective tissue in all analysed horses. The sutures became subjectively narrower with lower cell density in older horses as compared to young horses, and there was a noticeable maturation from woven to cancellous bone surrounding the sutures. Vascular structures were present in all sutures regardless of age or location. In conclusion, this study raises awareness of the histological suture conformation in neonatal and adult horses and their persistence into adulthood. A better understanding of the histological structure of facial sutures and their continued patency into adulthood can aide in the interpretation of radiographs and computed tomography images of the head and in improving treatment methods and outcomes for horses affected with suture exostosis. In addition, if biopsies are taken, clinicians will have a basis on which to determine which cells are related to the disease process and which are normally occurring.

The establishment probability of introduced alien fish can be context dependent, varying according to factors including propagule pressure and biotic resistance. The influence of nutrient enrichment on establishment outcomes of alien fishes is uncertain, yet this is a common anthropogenic stressor of many freshwaters. Here, the small-bodied alien topmouth gudgeon Pseudorasbora parva was used in mesocosms to experimentally test how a gradient of nutrient enrichment affected their growth rates, recruitment and trophic ecology. A ‘Control’ represented ambient, mesotrophic conditions, while treatments covered three levels of nutrient enrichment: low (eutrophic), medium (hypertrophic) and high (very hypertrophic). Each mesocosm was seeded with 6 mature P. parva (equal sex ratio) at the start of their reproductive season. After 100 days, length increments of the adult fish were significantly elevated in the low treatment, and these fish had also produced significantly higher numbers of 0+ fish compared to all other treatments. The trophic niche width of the mature fish was substantially higher in the control than the treatments, but this did not appear to confer any advantages to them in somatic growth rate or reproductive output. These results suggest that the nutrient status of receiving waters can have substantial impacts on the outcomes of fish introductions, where eutrophic conditions can assist the rapid population establishment of some alien species.

1. Land use intensification and climate change are two prominent drivers of variation in biological communities. However, we know very little about how these two potential environmental stressors interact. Here, we use a stable isotope approach to quantify how animal communities respond to urban and agriculture land use, and to latitudinal variation in climate (rainfall and temperature), in 29 streams across South Africa. 2. Community structure was shaped by both land use and climatic factors. The taxonomic diversity of invertebrates was best explained by an independent negative effect of urbanisation, while abundance declined in summer. However, we could not use our variables to predict fish diversity (suggesting that other factors may be more important). 3. Both trophic functional diversity (quantifed using isotopic richness ) and food chain length declined with increasing temperature. Functional redundancy (quantifed using isotopic uniqueness ) in the invertebrate community was high in wet areas, and a synergistic interaction with urbanisation caused the lowest values in dry urban regions. There was an additive effect of agriculture and rainfall on abundance‐weighted vertebrate functional diversity (quantified using isotopic dispersion ), with the former causing a decline in dispersion, with this partially compensated for by high rainfall. 4. In most cases, we found that a single dominant driver (either climate or land use) explained variation between streams. We only found two incidences of combined effects improving the model, one of which was amplified (i.e., the drivers combined to cause an effect larger than the sum of their independent effects), indicating that management should first focus on mitigating the dominant stressor in stream ecosystems for successful restoration efforts. 5. Overall, our study indicates subtle food web responses to multiple drivers of change, only identified by using functional isotope metrics – these are a useful tool for a whole‐systems biology understanding of global change.

As a high-quality non-polluting energy source, coalbed methane is widely used in power generation, automobile fuel and other fields. Moreover, the concentration of coalbed methane can be effectively reduced by exploiting and utilizing coalbed methane so as to eliminate the gas accidents fundamentally. In the coal mining area, the exploiting of coalbed methane resources are closely related to the hydrogeological conditions. This paper discusses the controlling effect of hydrogeological conditions on coalbed methane exploitation mainly from chemical characteristics, the hydraulic connection between aquifers, groundwater recharge, runoff and discharge characteristics and so on. The results showed that the water-bearing zones were recharged by precipitation. The isotopic characteristics of the coalbed water, the taiyuan limestone aquifer, the ordovician limestone aquifer showed that the groundwater were ancient which are formed earlier and the coalbed water expressed a definite drift feature of D. There had a weak hydraulic interaction between different aquifers. Mg2+, Cl-, HCO3-, TDS are the monitoring index of drainage production water. If the hydrogeological problems are frequently occurred When mining, it is necessary to analyze the hydrogeological conditions objectively and study the relationship between them to make the coalbed methane scientifically exploitation to improve efficiency and quality of coalbed methane.

Freshwater ecosystems are strongly influenced by weather extremes such as heatwaves, which are predicted to increase in frequency and magnitude in the future. In addition to these climate extremes, the freshwater realm is impacted by the exposure to various classes of chemicals emitted by anthropogenic activities. Currently, there is limited knowledge on how the combined exposure to heatwaves and chemicals affects the structure and functioning of freshwater ecosystems. Here, we review the available literature describing the single and combined effects of heatwaves and chemicals on different levels of biological organization, to obtain a holistic view of their potential interactive effects. We only found a few studies (13 out of the 61 studies included in this review) that investigated the biological effects of heatwaves in combination with chemical pollution. The reported interactive effects of heatwaves and chemicals varied largely not only within the different trophic levels, but also depending on the studied endpoints for populations or individuals. Hence, owing also to the little number of studies available, no consistent interactive effects could be highlighted at any level of biological organization. Moreover, we found an imbalance towards single species and population experiments, with only 5 studies using a multitrophic approach. This results in a knowledge gap for relevant community and ecosystem level endpoints, which prevents the exploration of important indirect effects that can compromise food web stability. Moreover, this knowledge gap impairs the validity of chemical risk assessments and our ability to protect ecosystems. Finally, we highlight the urgency of integrating extreme events into multiple stressors studies and provide specific recommendations to guide further experimental research in this regard.

Acute pain management is a challenging area encountered by inpatient clinicians every day. While patient care is increasingly complex and costly in this realm, the availability of applicable specialists is waning. This narrative review seeks to support diverse hospital-based healthcare providers in refining and updating their acute pain management knowledge base through clinical pearls and point-of-care resources. Practical guidance is provided for the design and adjustment of inpatient multimodal analgesic regimens, including conventional and burgeoning non-opioid and opioid therapies. The importance of customized care plans for patients with preexisting opioid tolerance, chronic pain, or opioid use disorder is emphasized, and current recommendations for inpatient management of associated chronic therapies are discussed. References to best available guidelines and literature are offered for further exploration. Improved clinician attention and more developed skill sets related to acute pain management could significantly benefit hospitalized patient outcomes and healthcare resource utilization.

What makes some species successful invaders while others fail, and why some invaders have major impacts in invaded ecosystems are pivotal questions that are attracting major research effort. The increasing availability of high resolution, georeferenced stable isotope landscapes (‘isoscapes’), coupled with the commercialization of stable isotope-enriched tracer molecules and the development of new analytical approaches, is facilitating novel applications of stable isotope techniques in ecology. We can now address ecological questions that were previously intractable. We review and discuss how stable isotope analysis (SIA) can complement fundamental research themes in the study of biological invasions, especially in answering questions relating to the physiological and ecological mechanisms underlying invasion processes and invader impacts. SIA was first used for simply describing the diet of invaders but, more recently, SIA-informed metrics of population and community trophic structure have been advanced. These approaches now permit the comparison of diets across space and time and provide quantitative tools to compare food webs across different stages of invasion. SIA has also been pivotal in quantifying competition for resources between native and non-native species (e.g. competition for food, water, or nutrient use). Specific questions related to modes of dispersal (e.g. origin and distance/direction travelled) and mechanisms of establishment can also be addressed using SIA in diverse taxa. An overarching goal is to highlight examples of recent studies that have used SIA in key areas of invasion ecology and use these to synthesize testable predictions where SIA could be applied to future studies. We conclude by highlighting several paths forward and describing how unresolved challenges in quantifying the rates, impacts, and mechanisms underlying invasions could potentially benefit from the use of SIA.

Invasive alien species are likely to interact with climate change, thus necessitating management that proactively addresses both global changes. However, invasive species managers’ concerns about the effects of climate change, the degree to which they incorporate climate change into their management, and what stops them from doing so remain unknown. Therefore, we surveyed natural resource managers addressing invasive species across the U.S. about their priorities, concerns, and management strategies in a changing climate. Of the 211 managers we surveyed, most were very concerned about the influence of climate change on invasive species management, but their organizations were significantly less so. Managers reported that lack of funding and personnel limited their ability to effectively manage invasive species, while lack of information limited their consideration of climate change in decision-making. Additionally, managers prioritized research that identifies range-shifting invasive species and native communities resilient to invasions and climate change. Managers also reported that this information would be most effectively communicated through conversations, research summaries, and meetings/symposia. Despite the need for more information, 65% of managers incorporate climate change into their invasive species management through strategic planning, preventative management, changing treatment and control, and increasing education and outreach. These results show the potential for incorporating climate change into management, but also highlight a clear and pressing need for more targeted research, accessible science communication, and two-way dialogue between researchers and managers focused on invasive species and climate change.

Understanding how species coexist is a key question in ecology, with implications for conserving biodiversity. Species coexistence is affected by multiple factors, including climate warming and the presence of predators, yet most studies consider these ‘stressors’ in isolation. The interactive effects of warming and predation on species coexistence have not been explored. Here, we constructed simplified shallow lake food webs in 24 large mesocosm ponds and applied a crossed design to simulate warming (+4.5°C) and predation (by crucian carp Carassius auratus ). We monitored population responses of two common snails, Bellamya aeruginosa and Radix swinhoei over 200 days. We predicted that warming will alter the phenology of the snails, and that this will combine with predation to reduce their abundance. Warming advanced the reproduction of R. swinhoei by 21.5 days and reduced biomass and density of both snails. The advance in R. swinhoei phenology suppressed the slower growing B. aeruginosa population, reducing coexistence. Warming and predation combined in an additive manner to decrease the biomass of B. aeruginosa . In contrast, the two drivers synergistically decreased the biomass and density of R. swinhoe i because of enhanced pressure from the fish on their preferred snail prey under warming, due to rising metabolic demands. Therefore, snail coexistence was further reduced with fish presence under warming. In conclusion, future continuous warming and strong predation might undermine the coexistence of the gastropods, thereby changing food web structures in shallow freshwater ecosystems.

The relationship between body mass (M) and size class abundance (N) depicts patterns of community structure and energy flow through food webs. While the general assumption is that M and N scale linearly (on log–log axes), nonlinearity is regularly observed in natural systems, and is theorized to be driven by nonlinear scaling of trophic level (TL) with M resulting in the rapid transfer of energy to consumers in certain size classes. We tested this hypothesis with data from 31 stream food webs. We predicted that allochthonous subsidies higher in the web results in nonlinear M–TL relationships and systematic abundance peaks in macroinvertebrate and fish size classes (latter containing salmonids), that exploit terrestrial plant material and terrestrial invertebrates, respectively. Indeed, both M–N and M–TL significantly deviated from linear relationships and the observed curvature in M–TL scaling was inversely related to that observed in M–N relationships. Systemic peaks in M–N, and troughs in M–TL occurred in size classes dominated by generalist invertebrates, and brown trout. Our study reveals how allochthonous resources entering high in the web systematically shape community size structure and demonstrates the relevance of a generalized metabolic scaling model for understanding patterns of energy transfer in energetically ‘open’ food webs.

Background As more is learned about trauma and the ways in which trauma informed care (TIC) is provided, it is important to explore the education and training offered to those individuals who provide TIC. Purpose This scoping review examined training provided to individuals who interact with persons aged birth to 21 years old who have experienced or are experiencing trauma. Method The researchers searched six databases and identified 16 peer-reviewed articles in the areas of medicine/nursing, social work, and education published from 2012 to 2019 that met inclusion criteria. Discussion Although most training protocols had a similar foundation, the findings from this review suggested that trauma informed care training practices vary across disciplines. Conclusions As training approaches varied greatly across disciplines, a conclusion on best practice guidelines cannot be stated for the professional environments.

Multiple stressors, such as warming and invasions, often occur together and have nonadditive effects. Most studies to date assume that stressors operate in perfect synchrony, but this will rarely be the case in reality. Stressor sequence and overlap will have implications for ecological memory - the ability of past stressors to influence future responses. Moreover, stressors are usually defined in an anthropocentric context: what we consider a short-term stressor, such as a flood, will span multiple generations of microbes. We argue that to predict responses to multiple stressors from individuals to the whole ecosystem, it is necessary to consider metabolic rates, which determine the timescales at which individuals operate and therefore, ultimately, the ecological memory at different levels of ecological organization.

1. Many aquatic ecosystems sustain multiple invasive species and interactions among them have important implications for ecosystem structure and functioning. Here, we examine interactions among two pairs of invasive crayfish species because of their close proximity and thus chance of sympatric populations in the near future within the Thames catchment, U.K. (signal, Pacifastacus leniusculus and virile crayfish, Orconectes virilis within a river system; red swamp, Procambarus clarkii and Turkish crayfish, Astacus leptodactylus found within a suite of ponds). We address two questions: do sympatric invasive crayfish occupy a smaller niche than their allopatric counterparts due to potential resource competition? and do interactions among invasive species amplify or mitigate one another's impacts on the ecosystem? 2. Two fully factorial mesocosm experiments (one for each crayfish pair) were used to investigate crayfish diet and their impact on benthic invertebrate community structure, benthic algal standing stock and leaf litter decomposition rates in allopatric and sympatric populations, compared with a crayfish‐free control. We used stable isotope analysis to examine crayfish diet in the mesocosms and in allopatric populations of each species in the Thames catchment. 3. Isotopic niche width did not vary significantly between allopatric and sympatric populations of crayfish in the mesocosm experiments, and isotopic niche partitioning in all the wild populations suggests the invaders can coexist. 4. All four species altered benthic invertebrate community structure but with differing functional effects, often mediated via trophic cascades. Red swamp crayfish predation upon snails evidently promoted benthic algal standing stock via reduction in grazing pressure. However, a trophic cascade whereby the crayfish consumed native invertebrate shredders, causing a reduction in net leaf litter decomposition, was decoupled by red swamp and signal crayfish since they consumed leaf litter directly and thus moderated the cascade to a trickle when in sympatry with Turkish or virile crayfish, respectively. 5. Benthic invertebrate predator abundance was significantly reduced by sympatric red swamp and Turkish crayfish but not independently when in allopatry, indicating an amplified effect overall when in sympatry. 6. Our results suggest that the combined effect of multiple invasions on the ecosystem can reflect either an additive effect of their independent impacts or an amplified effect, which is greater than the sum of their independent impacts. A lack of general pattern in their effects makes any potential management strategy more complex.

This study reports the use of parathyroid hormone fragment peptide 1‐34 (PTH1‐34) cross‐linked to a hydrogel in a fibrin base for the treatment of subchondral cyst‐like lesions (SCLs). The objectives were to determine the clinical and radiographic outcome of 28 horses with lameness attributable to one or two SCLs treated locally with one of three different concentrations of PTH1‐34 and to identify which concentration produces the best results. Twenty‐eight horses (34 SCLs) were treated surgically by debriding the content of the SCL and injecting different concentrations (0.1, 0.4, or 1 mg/mL) of PTH1‐34 in a fibrin hydrogel into the cavity. Treatment was considered successful if the horse was sound 12 months after treatment. The mean age of the horses was 7.2 years. Treatment was successful in 22 (78.6%) horses and improved the radiographic appearance of 27 (79.4%) SCLs. The outcome was not affected by age of the horse or by the number of SCLs (1 or 2) per horse. PTH1‐34 in a fibrin hydrogel administered into the SCL after surgical debridement of the lesion appears to be an effective treatment for horses with one or two SCLs. A PTH1‐34 concentration of 0.4 mg/mL may be slightly superior to concentrations of 0.1 and 1.0 mg/mL in resolving SCLs.

Body mass–abundance (M‐N) allometries provide a key measure of community structure, and deviations from scaling predictions could reveal how cross‐ecosystem subsidies alter food webs. For 31 streams across the UK, we tested the hypothesis that linear log‐log M‐N scaling is shallower than that predicted by allometric scaling theory when top predators have access to allochthonous prey. These streams all contained a common and widespread top predator (brown trout) that regularly feeds on terrestrial prey and, as hypothesised, deviations from predicted scaling increased with its dominance of the fish assemblage. Our study identifies a key beneficiary of cross‐ecosystem subsidies at the top of stream food webs and elucidates how these inputs can reshape the size‐structure of these ‘open’ systems.

In many ecological communities, the effects of exotic species are likely to extend beyond their direct interactions with natives, due to indirect effects. This dynamic might be particularly consequential in cases where invasive insects or other exotic herbivores target foundation plant species in the communities they invade. In this study at a site in western Massachusetts, we used experimental transplants to gauge the potential effects of a decline in the evergreen conifer Tsuga canadensis due to ongoing spread of two exotic insect pests on a liverwort, Bazzania trilobata, whose distribution is closely linked to dense stands of this conifer in the northeastern USA. After 4 years, transplanted B. trilobata samples moved to forest areas with lower abundance of T. canadensis declined significantly, particularly on sites with higher solar radiation, as determined by local slope and aspect. In addition, samples manually cleared of deciduous leaf litter were ∼ 17% larger than those exposed to natural accumulation of leaf litter, indicating a direct negative effect of deciduous trees on the liverwort that might increase as these tree species replace T. canadensis lost to invasive pests. A parallel experiment documented high mortality of B. trilobata (55%) when subjected to open canopy conditions similar to those resulting from selective “salvage” logging of hemlock in the region. These results indicate that the spread of exotic insect pests targeting T. canadensis is likely to produce strong indirect negative effects on the liverwort B. trilobata, via diminished commensal interactions with the conifer and increased amensalistic effects from the deciduous tree species that commonly replace it.

Living with HIV can be both a precipitant and a consequence of partner abuse (PA) across populations, including male–male partnerships. However, overlapping experiences of living with HIV and experiencing PA are not well characterized. We conducted 24 qualitative interviews with urban HIV-positive sexual minority men (SMM) recruited from a public hospital HIV clinic in Seattle, Washington, who reported lifetime PA histories, and analyzed them using content analysis. Participants reported psychological, physical, and sexual victimization from partners, varying in severity. Themes included (a) how HIV and minority stress (e.g., through self-stigma, serosorting) and (b) familial and repeated exposure to violence (e.g., through normalization or acceptance of PA, partnering as strategy for increasing one’s own safety, esteem, or social status), independently and in combination, provided a context for the men’s victimization. Our findings suggest that PA-related interventions might focus on coping with stigma, expanding social networks, and educating SMM about dysfunctional relationship dynamics.

Anthropogenic environmental changes, or ‘stressors’, increasingly threaten biodiversity and ecosystem functioning worldwide. Multiple-stressor research is a rapidly expanding field of science that seeks to understand and ultimately predict the interactions between stressors. Reviews and meta-analyses of the primary scientific literature have largely been specific to either freshwater, marine or terrestrial ecology, or ecotoxicology. In this cross-disciplinary study, we review the state of knowledge within and among these disciplines to highlight commonality and division in multiple-stressor research. Our review goes beyond a description of previous research by using quantitative bibliometric analysis to identify the division between disciplines and link previously disconnected research communities. Towards a unified research framework, we discuss the shared goal of increased realism through both ecological and temporal complexity, with the overarching aim of improving predictive power. In a rapidly changing world, advancing our understanding of the cumulative ecological impacts of multiple stressors is critical for biodiversity conservation and ecosystem management. Identifying and overcoming the barriers to interdisciplinary knowledge exchange is necessary in rising to this challenge. Division between ecosystem types and disciplines is largely a human creation. Species and stressors cross these borders and so should the scientists who study them.

Bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2) is a potent inducer of osteoblast-mediated bone formation and is used in orthopaedic applications in humans. This study was performed to evaluate (1) recombinant human BMP-2 (rhBMP-2) in clinical cases of subchondral cystic lesion (SCL) in horses and (2) the osteoinductive effects of rhBMP-2 treatment in vitro on primary equine osteoblasts. Three horses with SCLs of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint and associated lameness were treated by transcortical debridement and implantation of a collagen sponge containing rhBMP-2. In the in vitro studies, equine osteoblasts were cultured with rhBMP-2 to assess the effects of rhBMP-2 on their differentiation and mineralization. The treatment of SCLs with rhBMP-2 was well tolerated by all the horses, and improvements in subchondral bone radiographic appearance and lameness score were evident between 7 and 10 months post-surgery. Equine osteoblasts treated with rhBMP-2 demonstrated enhanced mineralization as evidenced by increases in Alizarin Red S staining. This was accompanied by significant increases in alkaline phosphatase (ALP) expression and activity, and a significant decrease in secreted osteocalcin levels. In conclusion rhBMP-2 can be used to assist in subchondral bone repair in horses, and we provide in vitro evidence to suggest that its influence on bone formation is mediated through enhanced osteoblast activity.

The estimated prevalence of adult sexual assault among sexual minority men (SMM) is comparable to published estimates for women. Adult sexual assault is associated with low disclosure rates and poor physical and mental health in SMM. One potential negative consequence of disclosures is secondary victimization, whereby victims perceive disclosure recipients’ reactions as victim-blaming or discriminatory and, therefore, retraumatizing. The published literature on secondary victimization among SMM is limited to the reporting of hate crimes and has not been extended to adult sexual assault, despite its high prevalence among SMM. Here, we explored the adult sexual assault disclosure experiences of 18 SMM through qualitative interviews (M age = 42.4 years). We observed four themes: (1) secondary victimization behaviors by disclosure recipients; (2) the role of sexual orientation in disclosure experiences; (3) participants’ own emotional, cognitive, and behavioral responses to secondary victimization; and (4) participants’ perceptions about how disclosure influenced their long-term recovery process from adult sexual assault. Secondary victimization behaviors included dismissal, blaming, and attributing sexual assault to alcohol use or sexual orientation. Disclosure recipients’ responses strongly influenced men’s future disclosures. Future mixed-methods research investigating the impact of secondary victimization on mental and physical health of SMM is warranted.

Climate change is leading to the global loss of open montane meadows by facilitating tree and shrub encroachment at high elevations. North America’s coastal mountains are particularly vulnerable to these changes, as they are relatively low elevation compared with interior mountains and contain only small areas of alpine tundra. We compared aerial photographs from 1962 with those from 2005 covering three subalpine regions on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, to document the extent of changes in woody vegetation and investigate associations between vegetation change and topography. Mean proportional woody vegetation cover increased significantly from 0.75±0.03 to 0.81±0.03 between 1962 and 2005 (p < 0.0001). Relative increase in woody vegetation cover was greater at higher elevations and on northerly aspects. These findings confirm an upward expansion and infilling of trees and shrubs and a reduction of the area encompassed by open alpine tundra on Vancouver Island. Loss of open meadow conditions at high elevations in this region will likely have consequences for alpine plant and animal communities.

Studies on resource sharing and partitioning generally consider species that occur in the same habitat. However, subsidies between linked habitats, such as streams and riparian zones, create potential for competition between populations which never directly interact. Evidence suggests that the abundance of riparian consumers declines after fish invasion and a subsequent increase in resource sharing of emerging insects. However, diet overlap has not been investigated. Here, we examine the trophic niche of native fish, invasive fish, and native spiders in South Africa using stable isotope analysis. We compared spider abundance and diet at upstream fishless and downstream fish sites and quantified niche overlap with invasive and native fish. Spider abundance was consistently higher at upstream fishless sites compared with paired downstream fish sites, suggesting that the fish reduced aquatic resource availability to riparian consumers. Spiders incorporated more aquatic than terrestrial insects in their diet, with aquatic insects accounting for 45–90% of spider mass. In three of four invaded trout rivers, we found that the average proportion of aquatic resources in web‐building spider diet was higher at fishless sites compared to fish sites. The probability of web‐building and ground spiders overlapping into the trophic niche of invasive brown and rainbow trout was as high as 26 and 51%, respectively. In contrast, the probability of spiders overlapping into the trophic niche of native fish was always less than 5%. Our results suggest that spiders share resources with invasive fish. In contrast, spiders had a low probability of trophic overlap with native fish indicating that the traits of invaders may be important in determining their influence on ecosystem subsidies. We have added to the growing body of evidence that invaders can have cross‐ecosystem impacts and demonstrated that this can be due to niche overlap.

The accelerating rate of global change has focused attention on the cumulative impacts of novel and extreme environmental changes (i.e. stressors), especially in marine ecosystems. As integrators of local catchment and regional processes, freshwater ecosystems are also ranked highly sensitive to the net effects of multiple stressors, yet there has not been a large-scale quantitative synthesis. We analysed data from 88 papers including 286 responses of freshwater ecosystems to paired stressors and discovered that overall, their cumulative mean effect size was less than the sum of their single effects (i.e. an antagonistic interaction). Net effects of dual stressors on diversity and functional performance response metrics were additive and antagonistic, respectively. Across individual studies, a simple vote-counting method revealed that the net effects of stressor pairs were frequently more antagonistic (41%) than synergistic (28%), additive (16%) or reversed (15%). Here, we define a reversal as occurring when the net impact of two stressors is in the opposite direction (negative or positive) from that of the sum of their single effects. While warming paired with nutrification resulted in additive net effects, the overall mean net effect of warming combined with a second stressor was antagonistic. Most importantly, the mean net effects across all stressor pairs and response metrics were consistently antagonistic or additive, contrasting the greater prevalence of reported synergies in marine systems. Here, a possible explanation for more antagonistic responses by freshwater biota to stressors is that the inherent greater environmental variability of smaller aquatic ecosystems fosters greater potential for acclimation and co-adaptation to multiple stressors.
