The deployment of electric, connected, and autonomous vehicles on public roads presents a significant challenge that can be addressed through previously established frameworks developed globally for implementing these technologies as part of an urban living lab (ULL). This systematic review, based on records from four distinct databases, focuses on projects that have conducted deployments of self-driving technologies in streets within urban environments. The review describes relevant information about various initiatives, including a classification of the stages of development reached according to the urban area covered, safety considerations, and lessons learned for optimal deployment. On-board sensing technology, digital infrastructure, and energy and communication systems emerge as the essential components of a ULL with autonomous vehicles (AVs). A crucial goal for smart cities is ensuring the scalability of large-scale deployments of such ULLs for safe, clean, and future mobility experimentation. This can only be achieved through effective coordination among academia, government, industry, and society to guarantee the successful integration of multiple projects in a unique environment.

Predicting energy demands based on the past energy consumption can allow a reasonable allocation of energy resource to avoid waste and improve utilization. To this end, linear or nonlinear forecasting models are applied. Some researchers use support vector regression models to deal with the energy consumption prediction problem as they can handle with nonlinear problems through their kernel function. However, using fuzzy rule-based models based on the granulation–degranulation mechanism to predict energy consumption can better deal with the nonlinear data and further improve the robustness and the accuracy of prediction compared with the support vector regression models. In this paper we apply a first-order fuzzy rule-based model to predict the energy data. Firstly, the data is granulated in the input space, and then the number of rules is determined according to the error value between the estimated value and the actual value. The prediction task can be completed based on a small amount of input data. It has good interpretability and delivers superior predictive performance. The experimental results show that the improvement of performance index MAE of the first-order fuzzy rule-based model is 18.59%, 37.58%, 25.82% and 8.43% better than that of the Lasso model, support vector regression, zero-order fuzzy rule-based model and LSTM-RNN model, respectively, on the testing data.

This paper faces the energy management problem of cooperative microgrids in a smart energy district. In particular, the aim of the research work is to propose an innovative optimization model to solve the problem of energy management in a district composed of several microgrids, taking into account uncertainties of key parameters. In this context, the objective of the paper is threefold: i) maximize the use of energy purchased at the day-ahead market; ii) minimize the need of additional and expensive energy in real-time iii) optimize the integration of renewable energy sources (RES), energy storage systems (ESS) and electric vehicle (EV) batteries in the microgrid. To these goals, the District Energy Management System (DEMS), i.e. the central controller of the district, must balance the microgrids energy demand with the optimal integration of RES, ESS and the batteries of EVs that are seen as movable storage devices shared among buildings. Moreover, the energy surplus can be sold back to the main power grid. The DEMS problem is solved by two approaches. In the first approach, the energy demand, the RES production and the costs are known and a linear programming problem is formalized and solved by the DEMS. In addition, a second approach is proposed in order to address the parameters uncertainty and is formalized as a stochastic linear programming problem. The optimization problems solutions provide the optimal strategy to schedule the charging and discharging operations of the storage systems and the electric vehicle batteries. A simulated case study demonstrates the benefits of the proposed approaches for the smart district.

Energy consumption prediction of buildings has drawn attention in the related literature since it is very complex and affected by various factors. Hence, a challenging work is accurately estimating the energy consumption of buildings and improving its efficiency. Therefore, effective energy management and energy consumption forecasting are now becoming very important in advocating energy conservation. Many researchers work on saving energy and increasing the utilization rate of energy. Prior works about the energy consumption prediction combine software and hardware to provide reasonable suggestions for users based on the analyzed results. In this paper, an innovative energy consumption prediction model is established to simulate and predict the electrical energy consumption of buildings. In the proposed model, the energy consumption data is more accurately predicted by using the gradient boosting regression tree algorithm. By comparing the performance index Root Mean Square Error of different prediction models through experiments it is shown that the proposed model obtains lower values on different testing data. More detailed comparison with other existing models through experiments show that the proposed prediction model is superior to other models in energy consumption prediction.

In the era of technological transformation, mobility and transportation systems are becoming more intelligent and greener. Thanks to powerful technologies and tools, electric and autonomous vehicles are spreading worldwide, substituting internal combustion engine vehicles and revolutionizing the way to drive. In this context, this paper is an extended version of the paper “Digital Twin in Intelligent Transportation Systems: a Review published in 2020 7th International Conference on Control, Decision and Information Technologies (CoDIT)”. The aim of this paper is to provide a comprehensive review of the literature from the last five years on the use of digital twin (DT) technology for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs), focusing on electric and autonomous vehicles. In particular, with respect to the previous work, the focus has been expanded to include DT integration with other cutting-edge technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and 5G for ITS. Moreover, this paper presents a broad perspective on challenges in EV applications, including tracking, monitoring, battery and charge management, connectivity, security, and privacy. In addition, this paper discusses how DT can be used to effectively address the current issues in electric vehicle services, such as tracking, monitoring, battery and charge management, connectivity, security, and privacy.

Abstract Nowadays, goods are relocated daily among urban fashion stores by van or truck. This relocation activity generates externalities in urban areas that cause deterioration in the quality of life of their citizens. Innovative strategies based on a sharing approach promise solutions to reduce the use of heavy, polluting vehicles and therefore the related externalities in urban areas. The authors aim to optimise the relocation activity of city fashion stores through a customer‐involved incentive mechanism. The method provides store shopping vouchers to loyal customers as a reward for package delivery from one shop to another. If no customers agree to participate in the delivery game, company relocation staff will perform the delivery service. The benefit of the proposed delivery game is twofold—it increases customer loyalty and reduces the externalities produced by heavy vehicles moving through the city. To this end, two integer linear programming problems are formalised to optimise goods relocation activity with package deliveries (1) by company staff only and (2) by loyal customers in an incentive game. A simulation case study is presented to show the application of the methodology in fashion stores.

This study investigated the problem of controlling a three-phase three-wire photovoltaic (PV)-type distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM). In order to model, simulate, and control the system, the MATLAB/SIMULINK tool was used. Different controllers were applied to create switching pulses for the IGBT-based voltage source converter (VSC) for the mitigation of various power quality issues in the PV-DSTATCOM. Traditional control algorithms guarantee faultless execution or outcomes only for a restricted range of operating situations due to their present design. Alternative regulators depend on more resilient neural network and fuzzy logic algorithms that may be programmed to operate in a variety of settings. In this study, an adaptive linear neural network (ADALINE) was proposed to solve the control problem more efficiently than the existing methods. The ADALINE method was simulated and the results were compared with the results of the synchronous reference frame theory (SRFT), improved linear sinusoidal tracer (ILST), and backpropagation (BP) algorithms. The simulation results showed that the proposed ADALINE method outperformed the compared algorithms. In addition, the total harmonic distortions (THDs) of the source current were estimated under ideal grid voltage conditions based on IEEE-929 and IEEE-519 guidelines.

Experts confirm that 85% of the world’s population is expected to live in cities by 2050. Therefore, cities should be prepared to satisfy the needs of their citizens and provide the best services. The idea of a city of the future is commonly represented by the smart city, which is a more efficient system that optimizes its resources and services, through the use of monitoring and communication technology. Thus, one of the steps towards sustainability for cities around the world is to make a transition into smart cities. Here, sensors play an important role in the system, as they gather relevant information from the city, citizens, and the corresponding communication networks that transfer the information in real-time. Although the use of these sensors is diverse, their application can be categorized in six different groups: energy, health, mobility, security, water, and waste management. Based on these groups, this review presents an analysis of different sensors that are typically used in efforts toward creating smart cities. Insights about different applications and communication systems are provided, as well as the main opportunities and challenges faced when making a transition to a smart city. Ultimately, this process is not only about smart urban infrastructure, but more importantly about how these new sensing capabilities and digitization developments improve quality of life. Smarter communities are those that socialize, adapt, and invest through transparent and inclusive community engagement in these technologies based on local and regional societal needs and values. Cyber security disruptions and privacy remain chief vulnerabilities.

The long-term electricity demand forecast of the consumer utilization is essential for the energy provider to analyze the future demand and for the accurate management of demand response. Forecasting the consumer electricity demand with efficient and accurate strategies will help the energy provider to optimally plan generation points, such as solar and wind, and produce energy accordingly to reduce the rate of depletion. Various demand forecasting models have been developed and implemented in the literature. However, an efficient and accurate forecasting model is required to study the daily consumption of the consumers from their historical data and forecast the necessary energy demand from the consumer’s side. The proposed recurrent neural network gradient boosting regression tree (RNN-GBRT) forecasting technique allows one to reduce the demand for electricity by studying the daily usage pattern of consumers, which would significantly help to cope with the accurate evaluation. The efficiency of the proposed forecasting model is compared with various conventional models. In addition, by the utilization of power consumption data, power theft detection in the distribution line is monitored to avoid financial losses by the utility provider. This paper also deals with the consumer’s energy analysis, useful in tracking the data consistency to detect any kind of abnormal and sudden change in the meter reading, thereby distinguishing the tampering of meters and power theft. Indeed, power theft is an important issue to be addressed particularly in developing and economically lagging countries, such as India. The results obtained by the proposed methodology have been analyzed and discussed to validate their efficacy.

Technological innovations have revolutionized the lifestyle of the society and led to the development of advanced and intelligent cities. Smart city has recently become synonymous of a city characterized by an intelligent and extensive use of Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) in order to allow efficient use of information. In this context, this paper proposes a new approach to optimize the planning of itineraries for one-day tourist. More in detail, an optimization approach based on Graph theory and multi-algorithms is provided to determine the optimal tourist itinerary. The aim is to minimize the travel times taking into account the tourist preferences. An Integer Linear Programming (ILP) problem is introduced to find the optimal outward and return paths of the touristic itinerary and a multi-algorithms strategy is used to maximize the number of attractions (PoIs) to be visited in the paths. Finally, a case study focusing on cruise tourist in the city of Bari, demonstrates the efficiency of the approach and the user interaction in the determination of the itinerary.

The common approach to model occupants behaviors in buildings is deterministic and consists of assumptions based on predefined fixed schedules or rules. In contrast with the deterministic models, stochastic and agent based (AB) models are the most powerful and suitable methods for modeling complex systems as the human behavior. In this paper, a co-simulation architecture is proposed with the aim of modeling the occupant behavior in buildings by a stochastic-AB approach and implementing an intelligent Building Energy Management System (BEMS). In particular, optimized control logics are designed for smart passive cooling by controlling natural ventilation and solar shading systems to guarantee the thermal comfort conditions and maintain energy performance. Moreover, the effects of occupant actions on indoor thermal comfort are also taken into account. This study shows how the integration of automation systems and passive techniques increases the potentialities of passive cooling in buildings, integrating or replacing the conventional efficiency strategies.
