Abstract

The purpose of this essay is to share the good practices installed in the virtual postgraduate programs of the Universidad Arturo Prat (UNAP), Chile associated with the continuous evaluation of quality processes. Our focus is on the continuous improvement of good practices through the accreditation process with the Latin American and Caribbean Institute for Quality in Distance Education (CALED) and the self-evaluation that the institution carries out to deliver quality service. The methodology used in this work is the documentary review and description of experiences under a qualitative approach. The results reveal that the UNAP has promoted the self-evaluation and international certification of its programs, in a context of normative change in Chile, which establishes new criteria and standards under the new Law of Higher Education Nº v 21.091, in wich are recognized as good practices: the institutional policies, the planning of the selfevaluation process, the updates of the technological platform, the virtual education enviroment, the virtualization adequate to the context, the active-participative academic actions, the rol of the teacher and the student, the academic training, as well as the components of the self-evaluation process, that must be constantly monitored and evaluated, in order to deliver quality services in the training of people participating in graduate programs under the virtual learning modality.

Abstract

Background: Older people living in long-term care facilities represent a particularly vulnerable segment of the population, who disproportionately bear the burden of infectious diseases, as recently highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Summary: Older long-term care residents typically cumulate several risk factors for infection and experience serious life-threatening outcomes once infected. These common infections are often compounded by the collective living environment, where it is more difficult to contain the spread of infection. Moreover, the staff may represent an additional reservoir of potential infection and mode of transmission. In this paper, we review the burden of infectious respiratory diseases in residents in long-term care and discuss the potential gains from higher vaccine coverage in this older and most vulnerable population but also from higher vaccine coverage among the facility staff. We highlight the compelling need to integrate specific vaccine recommendations for residents of long-term care into national vaccination schedules, as well as the need to include vaccination campaigns in routine protocols for infection control. Surveillance, reporting, hygiene, and individual protective measures remain key aspects in basic infection control, both in ordinary times and during epidemics. Key Message: Vaccination of residents in long-term care facilities against respiratory diseases including influenza, pneumococcal disease, pertussis, and COVID is a simple, inexpensive, and effective means to reduce the burden of infection in this segment of the population. Abstract

We report on picosecond UV-laser processing of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) at moderately high pressures above 500 bar. The main effect is specific to the ambient gas and laser pulse duration in the ablation regime: when samples are irradiated by 5 ps or 0.45 ps laser pulses in nitrogen gas environment, multiple nucleation of a new crystalline product - BN nanorods - takes place. This process is triggered on structural defects, which number density strongly decreases upon recrystallization. Non-linear photon absorption by adsorbed nitrogen molecules is suggested to mediate the nucleation-growth. High pressure is responsible for the confinement and strong backscattering of ablation products. A strong surface structuring also appears at longer 150-ps laser irradiation in similar experimental conditions. However, the transformed product in this case is amorphous strongly contaminated by boron suboxides BxOy.

30. Photoluminescence of hexagonal boron nitride: effect of surface oxidation under UV-laser irradiation

Abstract

We report on the UV laser induced fluorescence of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) following nanosecond laser irradiation of the surface under vacuum and in different environments of nitrogen gas and ambient air. The observed fluorescence bands are tentatively ascribed to impurity and mono (VN), or multiple (m-VN with m = 2 or 3) nitrogen vacancies. A structured fluorescence band between 300 nm and 350 nm is assigned to impurity-band transition and its complex lineshape is attributed to phonon replicas. An additional band at 340 nm, assigned to VN vacancies on surface, is observed under vacuum and quenched by adsorbed molecular oxygen. UV-irradiation of h-BN under vacuum results in a broad asymmetric fluorescence at ~400 nm assigned to m-VN vacancies; further irradiation breaks more B-N bonds enriching the surface with elemental boron. However, no boron deposit appears under irradiation of samples in ambient atmosphere. This effect is explained by oxygen healing of radiation-induced surface defects. Formation of the oxide layer prevents B-N dissociation and preserves the bulk sample stoichiometry.
