W dniach 15–17 marca 2022 r. w Instytucie Badawczym Leśnictwa odbyła się XII Sesja Zimowej Szkoły Leśnej, której tematem był „Wpływ zmian klimatu na środowisko leśne”. Spośród licznych propozycji, o wyborze powyższego tematu przesądziło obserwowane od wielu lat systematyczne pogorszanie się stanu zdrowotnego drzewostanów na skutek synergicznego oddziaływania wielu czynników abiotycznych i biotycznych w warunkach zmian klimatu. Współorganizatorem Sesji była Dyrekcja Generalna Lasów Państwowych. Merytoryczne aspekty XII Sesji zostały przygotowane i opracowane przez Radę Programową Zimowej Szkoły Leśnej w składzie: dr hab. Krzysztof Stereńczak, prof. IBL (przewodniczący), prof. dr hab. Bogdan Brzeziecki, mgr inż. Michał Graczyk, prof. dr hab. Andrzej Grzywacz, prof. dr hab. Andrzej Jagodziński, prof. dr hab. Janusz Olejnik, mgr inż. Jan Tabor, mgr inż. Krzysztof Rostek, prof. dr hab. Iwona Skrzecz, dr inż. Klaudia Ziemblińska. Rada Programowa określiła nie tylko zakres problematyki XII Sesji, ale także propozycje tematyczne referatów zamawianych oraz ich autorów. W trakcie trzech dni obrad prelegenci przedstawili 33 referaty. Referaty wygłosili również zaproszeni goście zagraniczni reprezentujący: Uniwersytet w Helsinkach, Czeski Uniwersytet Przyrodniczy w Pradze, Instytut Badań nad Zmianami Globalnymi (Czechy), Uniwersytet Wspólnoty Wirginii, Łotewski Państwowy Instytut Badawczy Leśnictwa oraz Integrated Carbon Observation System. W XII Sesji, która odbyła się w wersji online, wzięło udział niemal 200 osób reprezentujących m.in.: Ministerstwo Klimatu i Środowiska, jednostki organizacyjne Lasów Państwowych, ośrodki uniwersyteckie i instytuty badawcze. Liczne grono stanowili również przedstawiciele ośrodków naukowych oraz polskich uczelni leśnych.

It is assumed that the stimulatory effects of elevated CO2 concentration ([CO2]) on photosynthesis and growth may be substantially reduced by co-occurring environmental factors and the length of CO2 treatment. Here, we present the study exploring the interactive effects of three manipulated factors ([CO2], nitrogen supply and water availability) on physiological (gas-exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence), morphological and stoichiometric traits of Norway spruce (Picea abies) saplings after 2 and 3 years of the treatment under natural field conditions. Such multifactorial studies, going beyond two-way interactions, have received only limited attention until now. Our findings imply a significant reduction of [CO2]-enhanced rate of CO2 assimilation under reduced water availability which deepens with the severity of water depletion. Similarly, insufficient nitrogen availability leads to a down-regulation of photosynthesis under elevated [CO2] being particularly associated with reduced carboxylation efficiency of the Rubisco enzyme. Such adjustments in the photosynthesis machinery result in the stimulation of water-use efficiency under elevated [CO2] only when it is combined with a high nitrogen supply and reduced water availability. These findings indicate limited effects of elevated [CO2] on carbon uptake in temperate coniferous forests when combined with naturally low nitrogen availability and intensifying droughts during the summer periods. Such interactions have to be incorporated into the mechanistic models predicting changes in terrestrial carbon sequestration and forest growth in the future.

As ongoing research efforts contribute to elucidating the consequences of climate change as well as adaptation and mitigation options, aligning the current research knowledge with stakeholder opinions and perceptions remains critical for adopting effective climate change policies. This paper utilizes an interactive survey to (1) address the aforementioned gap in studies involving three groups of stakeholders and opinion makers and (2) perform a comparative primary study of the climate change assumptions, risk perceptions, policy preferences, observations, and knowledge of Czech farmers, governmental policy-makers and researchers. This study shows that the stakeholder groups agree that the climate is clearly changing, attribute this change mostly to man-made causes and expect the negative effects to either prevail or be unevenly geographically distributed. The large majority of all three groups consider unmitigated climate change a major threat even by 2050 and agree that preparing in advance is the best sectoral strategy. Importantly, while investment in adaptation measures is considered the most efficient tool for accelerating the implementation of adaptation measures, the CAP and EU rules (as valid in 2016) are believed to hinder such measures. The results of this study have ramifications for the wider region of Central Europe.

A 7-year study was conducted to examine the growth (diameter and root) response of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) seedlings to elevated CO2 (CO2ELV, 770 μmol (CO2) mol−1) in different mixture types (monospecific (M): a Norway spruce seedling surrounded by six spruce seedlings, group-admixture (G): a spruce seedling surrounded by three spruce and three European beech seedlings, single-admixture (S): a spruce seedling surrounded by six beech seedlings). After seven years of treatments, no significant effect from elevated CO2 was found on the root dry mass (p = 0.90) and radial growth (p = 0.98) of Norway spruce. Neither did we find a significant interaction between [CO2] × mixing treatments (p = 0.56), i.e. there was not a significant effect of CO2 concentrations [CO2] in all the admixture types. On the contrary, spruce responses to admixture treatments were significant under CO2AMB (p = 0.05), which demonstrated that spruce mainly increased its growth (diameter and root) in M and neighbouring with beech was not favourable for spruce seedlings. In particular, spruce growth diminished when growing beside high proportions/numbers of European beech (S). Here, we also evaluated the association between tree-ring formation and climatic variables (precipitation and air temperature) in different admixture types under elevated and ambient CO2 (CO2AMB, 385 μmol (CO2) mol−1). Overall, our result suggests that spruce responses to climate factors can be affected by tree species mixing and CO2 concentrations, i.e. the interaction between climatic variables × admixture types × [CO2] could alter the response of spruce to climatic variables.

Forests provide diverse co-benefits, including livelihoods enhancement, poverty alleviation, and biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services such as climate mitigation. Consequently, Ghana has embraced several global, regional, national, and local forest policy interventions to safeguard its forest resources’ sustainable management. However, the forest policy interventions have not adequately addressed the co-benefits issues of forest resources leading to several forest illegalities that drive forest resources degradation and loss. These forest policies and interventions on the ground primarily favour carbon stocks enhancement and sequestration activities for carbon mitigation purposes compared to the benefits, access and rights that forest-dependent people and communities are supposed to derive from forest resources. These perceived injustices in the access and distribution of forest resources have culminated into all forms of forest illegalities driving Ghana’s forest resources into massive degradation and loss. Currently, Ghana is experiencing a 2% rate of annual deforestation and forest degradation, which translates into approximately 135,000 ha/year of forest cover loss due to anthropogenic causes. Our review is based on relevant and critical forest documents, and scientific peer-reviewed papers on Ghana’s forest policy interventions and dynamics recently published. The information gathered enabled us to highlight the perceived injustices in the forest policy interventions and their effects on forest resources. Unjust forest resources sharing and distribution are critical drivers of forest resources degradation and loss. We thus offer lessons for remedying the unfair distribution and injustices to promote equitable forest resources rights and benefit access to local forest-dependent people. It is expected that this review will offer and assist forest policy, intervention spatial and other planners and designers to find a possible way forward to avoid nature degradation, including biodiversity loss, to resolve perceived injustices in the forestry sector, to use adequate all ecosystem services provided by forests as well as to promote local livelihood and sustainability.

Effect of drought during 2017 and 2018 resulted in radial stem increment reduction to 78% and 61%, respectively, of the levels occurring in normal year 2016 in Central Europe. Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) is currently the most threatened commercial tree species in Central Europe. This is due to increased drought stress from advancing climate change as well as the species’ distribution outside its natural range. Tree water status and water movement through a tree are key parameters influencing tree growth and vitality. This study is focused on the growth and stress reaction of spruce to climatic conditions, analysing stem diameter variation along an elevation gradient (381–995 m a.s.l.) in the Czech Republic. Tree water deficit based on the zero-growth concept (TWD), calculated from high-frequency dendrometer records and the temporal dynamics of radial growth, was studied for 3 years (2016–2018). Two of these 3 years were affected by severe drought during the growing season. Contrary to our expectations, the observed TWD showed no clear linear decline with rising elevation. The most severe tree desiccation was observed in experimental sites at middle elevations of about 600 m a.s.l. Here, we show that both the timing and level of tree water deficit had an impact on annual stem radial increment (SRIannual). Severe drought had a substantial negative impact on SRIannual of Norway spruce in both 2017 and 2018. Drought conditions in 2017 and 2018 resulted in reduction of SRIannual relative to measurements for the wetter year in 2016 to 78% and 61%, respectively. We report the evidence that the current climatic conditions in the Central European region are not suitable for growing Norway spruce at lower and middle elevations and that forest management needs to react immediately to this situation.

This paper explores the effects of three types of admixture treatments: (1) monospecific (M: European beech surrounded by six European beech seedlings), (2) single-admixture (S: European beech surrounded by six Norway spruce seedlings), and (3) group-admixture (G: European beech surrounded by three Norway spruce and three European beech seedlings), and two different CO2 concentrations ([CO2]): ambient [AMBCO2, 385 μmol (CO2) mol−1] and elevated [ELECO2, 770 μmol (CO2) mol−1] on the stem diameter increment (DI), based on a 7-year monitoring of the diameter growth of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) seedlings. Furthermore, to improve our understanding of the influence of climatic variables, we assessed the effects of precipitation and temperature on radial growth. After 7 years’ experience (irrespective of admixture treatment), our data were not able to confirm the effect of elevated CO2 on the diameter growth (p value = 0.35), but the result was changed when the effect of elevated CO2 was considered under the different types of admixture. Elevated CO2 along with single-admixture increased the diameter increment significantly (p value = 0.001). In contrast, we characterized a significant effect of AMBCO2 × G interaction on DI (p value = 0.002). But DI was unaffected by elevated CO2 in M (p value = 0.77). In both [CO2], inter-specific competition with spruce resulted in the highest radial growth. The inter-specific interaction was most pronounced in the lower proportion with spruce (S) in ELECO2, while in ambient CO2, the higher proportion with spruce (G) had the greatest effect on the radial growth. With respect to the climatic factors, our observations showed that temperature had a stronger influence than precipitation in ELECO2, but in AMBCO2, precipitation had the strongest effect on the radial growth as indicated by the statistically significant correlation between climatic variables and radial growth. Overall, our result suggested that seedlings growth was more under the control of climate and edaphic factors than dependent on tree species diversity and CO2 concentrations.

The strong effects of climate change are expected to negatively impact the long-term resilience and function of forest ecosystems, which could lead to changes in forest carbon balance and productivity. However, these forest responses may vary with local conditions and forest types. Accordingly, this study was carried out to determine gross primary productivity (GPP) sensitivity to changes in environmental parameters. Central European beech (at Štítná) and spruce species (at Bílý Kr̆íz̆ and Rájec), growing under contrasting climatic conditions, were studied. The comparative analyses of GPP were based on a five-year-long dataset of eddy covariance fluxes during the main growing season (2012–2016). Results of forest GPP responses with changes in environmental factors from a traditional Stepwise multiple linear regression model (SMLR) were used and compared with Random forest (RF) analyses. To demonstrate how actual GPP trends compare to potential GPP (GPPpot) courses expected under near-optimal environmental conditions, we computed normalized GPP (GPPnorm) with values between 0 and 1 as the ratio of the estimated daily sum of GPP to GPPpot. The study confirmed the well-known effect of total intensity of the photosynthetically active radiation and its diffuse fraction on GPPnorm across all the forest types. However, the study also showed the secondary effects of other environmental variables on forest productivity depending on the species and local climatic conditions. The reduction in forest productivity at the beech forest in Štítná was presumed to be mainly induced by edaphic drought (anisohydric behaviour). In contrast, reduced forest productivity at the spruce forest sites was presumably induced by both meteorological and hydrological drought events, especially at the moderately dry climate in Rájec. Overall, our analyses call for more studies on forest productivity across different forest types and contrasting climatic conditions, as this productivity is strongly dependent on species type and site-specific environmental conditions.

The occurrence of extreme drought poses a severe threat to forest ecosystems and reduces their capability to sequester carbon dioxide. This study analysed the impacts of a central European summer drought in 2015 on gross primary productivity (GPP) at two Norway spruce forest sites representing two contrasting climatic conditions—cold and humid climate at Bílý Kříž (CZ-BK1) vs. moderately warm and dry climate at Rájec (CZ-RAJ). The comparative analyses of GPP was based on a three-year eddy covariance dataset, where 2014 and 2016 represented years with normal conditions, while 2015 was characterized by dry conditions. A significant decline in the forest GPP was found during the dry year of 2015, reaching 14% and 6% at CZ-BK1 and CZ-RAJ, respectively. The reduction in GPP coincided with high ecosystem respiration (Reco) during the dry year period, especially during July and August, when several heat waves hit the region. Additional analyses of GPP decline during the dry year period suggested that a vapour pressure deficit played a more important role than the soil volumetric water content at both investigated sites, highlighting the often neglected importance of considering the species hydraulic strategy (isohydric vs. anisohydric) in drought impact assessments. The study indicates the high vulnerability of the Norway spruce forest to drought stress, especially at sites with precipitation equal or smaller than the atmospheric evaporative demand. Since central Europe is currently experiencing large-scale dieback of Norway spruce forests in lowlands and uplands (such as for CZ-RAJ conditions), the findings of this study may help to quantitatively assess the fate of these widespread cultures under future climate projections, and may help to delimitate the areas of their sustainable production.

Climate-smart forestry (CSF) consists of an extensive framework of actions directed to mitigating and adapting to global climate change impacts on the resilience and productivity of forest ecosystems. This study investigates the impact of the pan-European 2018 drought on carbon exchange dynamics in typical highland and mountain forests in the Czech Republic, including two coniferous (Norway spruce at Bílý Kříž and Rajec) and one deciduous (European beech at Štítná) stand. Our results show annual net ecosystem CO2 uptake at Rajec to be reduced by 50% during the drought year in comparison to a reference year with normal climatic conditions. Bílý Kříž is less affected by drought, as the local microclimate ensures sufficient water supply. The European beech forest at Štítná is most resilient against drought and its negative impacts: there we detect no differences in carbon exchange dynamics between the drought year and the reference year. We consider the matching of tree species to site conditions as crucial in the context of CSF, specifically regarding the stand response to water limitation and water supply and demand. Successively replacing spruce with beech trees in areas with high water demand but limited water supply, like Rajec, will support the goals of CSF.

A growing body of scientific evidence indicates that we have entered the Anthropocene Epoch. Many assert that society has exceeded sustainable ecological planetary boundaries and that altered biogeophysical processes are no longer reversible to natural rates of ecosystem functioning. To properly and successfully address societal needs for the future, more holistic and complex methods need to be applied at various spatial and temporal scales. The increasingly interconnected nature of human and natural environments—from individuals to large megacities and entire continents and from cells through ecosystems to the biosphere as a whole (e.g., as seen in the carbon cycle)—demand new and often interdisciplinary and international approaches to address emerging global challenges. With that perspective in mind, the Czech Republic’s National Climate Program was established in 1991 with the aim to understand the impact of global environmental change on society. The National Climate Program was updated in 2017 to formulate a new Climate Protection Policy. Here, we outline the multifaceted problems that climate change poses for the Czech Republic, as well as a new scientific infrastructure and approaches directed to better understanding the effects of climate change on our ecosystems, water resources, urban environment, agriculture, human health, and general economy.

Wetlands can be defined as transitional ecotone ecosystems between terrestrial and aquatic conditions and are characterized by the waterlogged soils. Prevailing anaerobic conditions in wetland soils slow down or suspend decomposition processes of organic matter. These processes are connected with the production of soil biogenic methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2). CH4 is a product of organic decomposition under anaerobic conditions, while CO2 is a product of organic matter decomposition under aerobic conditions. Anaerobic conditions stabilized in profiles of wetland soils determine a crucial role of wetlands in the carbon cycle at both the local and the global scale. Wetlands sequestrate well carbon into the soil for a long period, and their soils contain about one-third of the global soil carbon stock. It is a bit of a paradox that ecosystems, which are responsible for creating huge carbon storage, are now under scrutiny in case of CH4 emissions into the atmosphere.

We analyzed the effect of manipulated water availability on an accumulation of nutrients and metals, their stoichiometry, and allocation to roots or leaves in a short rotation coppice (SRC) poplar plantation. The aim of this study was also to clarify how these changes are related to the effects of drought on growth parameters. This study was conducted in Domaninek, Czech Republic in an SRC poplar clone J-105 (Populus nigra L. × P. Maximowiczii H.). This plantation was established as an uncoppiced (single stem) and later on converted into multi-stem (coppice). A rain-out shelter experiment (reduced throughfall) was established in the second year of coppice and the drought stress (DS) applied for 3 years. Water availability altered the accumulation and allocation of nutrients and metals in above and belowground biomass. Reduced water availability led, in particular, to the significantly lower accumulation of potassium (K) in both leaves and roots and a higher carbon (C) to potassium (K) ratio (C:K) in leaves. The significant decline of zinc (Zn) was also found in roots under reduced throughfall. Reduced water availability led to increased accumulation of cadmium (Cd) in leaves and decreased accumulation in roots. This resulted in significantly lower root:leaf ratio for Cd content. An opposite response was found for the allocation of copper (Cu). We also demonstrated that major changes in accumulation and allocation are associated with changes in growth. The results indicated that such knowledge may contribute to understanding the role of nutrient uptake and translocation in acclimation to DS and it may help in developing phytoextraction methods on contaminated soils.

One of the greatest threats posed by ongoing climate change may be regarded the drought caused by changes in precipitation distribution. The aim of presented study was to characterize reactions to dry conditions and conditions without drought stress on gross primary production (GPP) and net ecosystem production (NEP) of spruce and beech forests, as these two species dominate within the European continent. Daily courses of GPP and NEP of these two species were evaluated in relation to an expected decrease in CO2 uptake during dry days. The occurrence of CO2 uptake hysteresis in daily production was also investigated. Our study was performed at Bilý Křiž (spruce) and Stitna (beech) mountain forest sites during 2010–2012 period. We applied eddy covariance technique for the estimation of carbon fluxes, vapor pressure deficit and precipitation characteristics together with the SoilClim model for the determination of drought conditions, and the inverse of the Penman–Monteith equation to compute canopy conductance. Significant differences were found in response to reduced water supply for both species. Spruce reacts by closing its stomata before noon and maintaining a reduced photosynthetic activity for the rest of the day, while beech keeps its stomata open as long as possible and slightly reduces photosynthetic activity evenly throughout the entire day. In the spruce forest, we found substantial hysteresis in the light response curve of GPP. In the beech forest, the shape of this curve was different: evening values exceeded morning values.

Accurate predictions of net ecosystem productivity (NEPc) of forest ecosystems are essential for climate change decisions and requirements in the context of national forest growth and greenhouse gas inventories. However, drivers and underlying mechanisms determining NEPc (e.g., climate and nutrients) are not entirely understood yet, particularly when considering the influence of past periods. Here we explored the explanatory power of the compensation day (cDOY)-defined as the day of year when winter net carbon losses are compensated by spring assimilation-for NEPc in 26 forests in Europe, North America, and Australia, using different NEPc integration methods. We found cDOY to be a particularly powerful predictor for NEPc of temperate evergreen needleleaf forests (R2=0.58) and deciduous broadleaf forests (R2=0.68). In general, the latest cDOY correlated with the lowest NEPc. The explanatory power of cDOY depended on the integration method for NEPc, forest type, and whether the site had a distinct winter net respiratory carbon loss or not. The integration methods starting in autumn led to better predictions of NEPc from cDOY then the classical calendar method starting 1 January. Limited explanatory power of cDOY for NEPc was found for warmer sites with no distinct winter respiratory loss period. Our findings highlight the importance of the influence of winter processes and the delayed responses of previous seasons' climatic conditions on current year's NEPc. Such carry-over effects may contain information from climatic conditions, carbon storage levels, and hydraulic traits of several years back in time. (Less)

Eddy-covariance is a direct and accurate method to measure exchanges of greenhouse gases and energy between ecosystems and the atmosphere under good turbulent mixing conditions. Calm conditions can affect the accuracy of the eddy-covariance measurements by potential gas buildup below the measurement height. This study characterizes wind patterns and calm periods at Bílý Kříž Ecosystem Research Station, using four-year (2010-2013) wind data measured on an eddy-covariance tower at the site, located in Beskids Mountains, Czech Republic. The site is covered by young, dense Norway spruce forest on a 12.5° slope facing South. The results show that the prevailing wind direction was from S to SW direction (55 % frequency of occurrence), and to a much lesser extent from N, NE and NW but including the strongest winds above 12 m s-1, possibly during gale or storm events. Calm condition (u < 1 m s-1) accounted for 34 % of year time. Summer and Spring were the calmest seasons. Occurrence frequencies of calm conditions for the six-month periods from May to October (plant growing season) were higher than those for the remaining parts of the year (on average 39 % vs 28 % respectively). One should be aware of the calm periods in May-October when processing eddy-covariance data, since it is the time period of most contribution of forest ecosystem as a sink of CO2.

Accurate wind analyses using six wind classes and twelve splitting directions were done to deeply evaluate wind conditions on Štítná CzeCOS’s ecosystem station in the Czech Republic. The analysis brings information about contribution of different part of the research-forested area to the measurement of CO2 exchange between the studied ecosystem and atmosphere. Štítná station is located inside of a forest composed of Fagus sylvatica with age 114 years and the forest can be harvested sometime forward. Total of 82 % of the wind contributions speed are in the range of 1.0 - 6.0 m s-1 and the major accumulation of winds comes from SE (9 %), SSE (17 %) and S (14 %); 13 % were calm periods. The obtained information will be useful for evaluate the conditions of the use of the eddy covariance technique in the research area.

This investigation examined the effects of two different carbon dioxide concentrations ([CO2]): Ambient (A, 385 μmol (CO2) mol−1) and elevated (E, A+385 μmol (CO2) mol−1)) on the tree-ring width and early to latewood proportion in Norway spruce for seven years (2006-2012). Further, to improve our understanding of the influence of climatic variables, we assessed the effects of precipitation and temperature. Our observations showed that spruce trees growing under elevated CO2 (EC) formed less early (p > 0.05) and latewood (p < 0.05) and hence smaller annual increments (p > 0.05) than trees in ambient CO2 (AC). Early to latewood proportion was nearly 73% and 75% in AC and EC, respectively. In both CO2 concentrations, the largest tree-rings and earlywood width was observed during 2009 and 2010, which is coincident with the highest precipitation in May (2010) and the highest air temperature in April (2009). Moreover, to determine the association between the latewood formation and air temperature during the second half of the growing season, and correlation between the earlywood formation and precipitation during the first half of the growing season we run Spearman’s correlation test, the determination coefficient values for latewood formation were r = 0.45 (AC) and r = 0.68 (EC), and for earlywood formation were r = 0.53 (AC) and r = 0.42 (EC), although coefficient values were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Also, our study indicated that temperature had stonger influence than precipitation in EC, but in AC precipitation had the strongest effect on radial growth.

The impact of atmospheric reactive nitrogen (Nr) deposition on carbon (C) sequestration in soils and biomass of unfertilised, natural, semi-natural and forest ecosystems has been much debated. Many previous results of this dC / dN response were based on changes in carbon stocks from periodical soil and ecosystem inventories, associated with estimates of Nr deposition obtained from large-scale chemical transport models. This study and a companion paper (Flechard et al., 2019) strive to reduce uncertainties of N effects on C sequestration by linking multi-annual gross and net ecosystem productivity estimates from 40 eddy covariance flux towers across Europe to local measurement-based estimates of dry and wet Nr deposition from a dedicated collocated monitoring network. To identify possible ecological drivers and processes affecting the interplay between C and Nr inputs and losses, these data were also combined with in situ flux measurements of NO, N2O and CH4 fluxes, soil NO3− leaching sampling, as well as results of soil incubation experiments for N and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, surveys of available data from online databases and from the literature, together with forest ecosystem (BASFOR) modelling. Multi-year averages of net ecosystem productivity (NEP) in forests ranged from −70 to 826 g (C) m−2 yr−1 at total wet + dry inorganic Nr deposition rates (Ndep) of 0.3 to 4.3 g (N) m−2 yr−1; and from −4 to 361 g (C) m−2 yr−1 at Ndep rates of 0.1 to 3.1 g (N) m−2 yr−1 in short semi-natural vegetation (moorlands, wetlands and unfertilised extensively managed grasslands). The GHG budgets of the forests were strongly dominated by CO2 exchange, while CH4 and N2O exchange comprised a larger proportion of the GHG balance in short semi-natural vegetation. Nitrogen losses in the form of NO, N2O and especially NO3− were of the order of 10–20 % of Ndep at sites with Ndep 3 g (N) m−2 yr−1, indicating that perhaps one third of the sites were in a state of early to advanced N saturation. Net ecosystem productivity increased with Nr deposition up to 2–2.5 g (N) m−2 yr−1, with large scatter associated with a wide range in carbon sequestration efficiency (CSE, defined as the NEP / GPP ratio). At elevated Ndep levels (> 2.5 g (N) m−2 yr−1), where inorganic Nr losses were also increasingly large, NEP levelled off and then decreased. The apparent increase in NEP at low to intermediate Ndep levels was partly the result of geographical cross-correlations between Ndep and climate, indicating that the actual mean dC / dN response at individual sites was significantly lower than would be suggested by a simple, straightforward regression of NEP vs. Ndep.

As ongoing research efforts contribute to elucidating the consequences of climate change as well as adaptation and mitigation options, aligning the current research knowledge with stakeholder opinions and perceptions remains critical for adopting effective climate change policies. This paper utilizes an interactive survey to (1) address the aforementioned gap in studies involving three groups of stakeholders and opinion makers and (2) perform a comparative primary study of the climate change assumptions, risk perceptions, policy preferences, observations, and knowledge of Czech farmers, governmental policy-makers and researchers. This study shows that the stakeholder groups agree that the climate is clearly changing, attribute this change mostly to man-made causes and expect the negative effects to either prevail or be unevenly geographically distributed. The large majority of all three groups consider unmitigated climate change a major threat even by 2050 and agree that preparing in advance is the best sectoral strategy. Importantly, while investment in adaptation measures is considered the most efficient tool for accelerating the implementation of adaptation measures, the CAP and EU rules (as valid in 2016) are believed to hinder such measures. The results of this study have ramifications for the wider region of Central Europe.

A long-term context is important for understanding past climatic variability. Although tree-ring widths (TRWs) are widely used as a proxy for reconstructing past climate, the use of annually-resolved values of δ13C and δ18O tree-ring stable isotopes (TRSIs) is increasing and may provide further valuable information. Here, we present a 487-year-long TRW chronology and 240-year-long TRSI chronology for Bosnian pine (Pinus heldreichii H. Christ) and compare them to each other. We demonstrate that both δ13C and δ18O values are better proxies for temperature, precipitation, and drought than TRW. The correlations between these climate parameters and TRSIs are strongest for the combined summer (JJA) period. The results of temporal and spatial field correlation indicate that TRSI chronologies are stable, reliable proxies for JJA precipitation reconstruction over the whole Balkan Peninsula and surrounding eastern Mediterranean region. However, the stability of the temperature signal of the both δ13C and δ18O chronologies declines after the 1950s. Our work supports the emerging evidence that TRSI data track climate variability more accurately than a conventional TRW approach and can be subsequently used for the reconstruction of past climate.

We investigated how reduced summer precipitation modifies photosynthetic responses of two model tree species&mdash, coniferous Norway spruce and broadleaved sessile oak&mdash, to changes in atmospheric CO2 concentration. Saplings were grown under mountainous conditions for two growing seasons at ambient (400 &mu, mol CO2 mol&ndash, 1) and elevated (700 &mu, 1) CO2 concentration. Half were not exposed to precipitation during the summer (June&ndash, August). After two seasons of cultivation under modified conditions, basic photosynthetic characteristics including light-saturated rate of CO2 assimilation (Amax), stomatal conductance (GSmax), and water use efficiency (WUE) were measured under their growth CO2 concentrations together with in vivo carboxylation rate (VC) and electron transport rate (J) derived from CO2-response curves at saturating light. An increase in Amax under elevated CO2 was observed in oak saplings, whereas it remained unchanged or slightly declined in Norway spruce, indicating a down-regulation of photosynthesis. Such acclimation was associated with an acclimation of both J and VC. Both species had increased WUE under elevated CO2 although, in well-watered oaks, WUE remained unchanged. Significant interactive effects of tree species, CO2 concentration, and water availability on gas-exchange parameters (Amax, GSmax, WUE) were observed, while there was no effect on biochemical (VC, J) and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters. The assimilation capacity (Asat, CO2 assimilation rate at saturating light intensity and CO2 concentration) was substantially reduced in spruce under the combined conditions of water deficiency and elevated CO2, but not in oak. In addition, the stimulatory effect of elevated CO2 on Amax persisted in oak, but completely diminished in water-limited spruce saplings. Our results suggest a strong species-specific response of trees to reduced summer precipitation under future conditions of elevated CO2 and a limited compensatory effect of elevated CO2 on CO2 uptake under water-limited conditions in coniferous spruce.

Recent climate warming has shifted the timing of spring and autumn vegetation phenological events in the temperate and boreal forest ecosystems of Europe. In many areas spring phenological events start earlier and autumn events switch between earlier and later onset. Consequently, the length of growing season in mid and high latitudes of European forest is extended. However, the lagged effects (i.e. the impact of a warm spring or autumn on the subsequent phenological events) on vegetation phenology and productivity are less explored. In this study, we have (1) characterised extreme warm spring and extreme warm autumn events in Europe during 2003-2011, and (2) investigated if direct impact on forest phenology and productivity due to a specific warm event translated to a lagged effect in subsequent phenological events. We found that warmer events in spring occurred extensively in high latitude Europe producing a significant earlier onset of greening (OG) in broadleaf deciduous forest (BLDF) and mixed forest (MF). However, this earlier OG did not show any significant lagged effects on autumnal senescence. Needleleaf evergreen forest (NLEF), BLDF and MF showed a significantly delayed end of senescence (EOS) as a result of extreme warm autumn events; and in the following year's spring phenological events, OG started significantly earlier. Extreme warm spring events directly led to significant (p=0.0189) increases in the productivity of BLDF. In order to have a complete understanding of ecosystems response to warm temperature during key phenological events, particularly autumn events, the lagged effect on the next growing season should be considered.

Leaf area index (LAI) is an important determinant of biomass production and yield of short rotation bio-energy plantation. An accurate measurement of LAI is critical for quantifying light interception and penetration within the canopy, and subsequently understanding its influence on the stand carbon and energy balance. The aim of the current study is validation of the Sunscan Plant Canopy Analyzer which serves as an indirect method for the evaluation of the seasonal patterns of LAI, relation between LAI and above ground woody dry biomass and to determine the specific leaf area in short-rotation poplar hybrid clone J-105 (Populus nigra × P. maximowiczii) in uncoppiced (1st rotation) and coppiced (2nd rotation), respectively. LAI was measured in uncoppiced and coppiced by two different methods using indirect (SunScan Plant Canopy Analyzer) and direct (litterfall collection). Sunscan Plant Canopy Analyzer was compared against litterfall collection (only way to retrieve the actual LAI). Simple regression (R2 = 0.82) model was fitted to validate indirect measurement method and a very good agreement (82%) was observed in LAI values estimated from SunScan Plant Canopy Analyzer and from litterfall collection. Seasonal variability of LAI in a short rotation coppice (SRC) culture of poplar clone J-105 was evaluated over six years period (2008-2013), for uncoppiced (2008 and 2009) and coppiced (2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013) culture. The maximum canopy LAI (LAImax) reached 7.3 (uncoppiced) and 9.5 (coppiced). The linear regression (R2 = 0.93) for average LAI and above ground woody dry biomass was determined, and it was found that LAI acts an indicator of biomass productivity. Specific leaf area (SLA) was estimated in both uncoppiced and coppiced culture of poplar. The maximum SLA was found to be 138.9 cm2g-1 in uncoppiced and 126.9 cm2g-1 in coppiced. To conclude, the evaluated indirect LAI measurement method is portable, reliable and faster than direct LAI measurement in high density poplar short-rotation coppice culture.

Rapid urban expansion and development have resulted in the conversion of many natural green surfaces within cities to non-transpiring built-up surfaces, such as concrete and asphalt. These artificial urban surfaces cause substantial variation in land surface temperatures that affect the urban microclimate. Thus, there is the need to substantially quantify the extent of green cover loss within growing cities and its impact on surface temperatures. This study used LANDSAT data to spatially assess the extent of urban expansion and its effect on land surface temperature within Kumasi, Ghana. Subsequently, the results showed significant changes in the land cover, which had an effect on the observed land surface temperatures from 1986 to 2015. Generally, there was an overall increase in the built-up areas by 24.13% (55.81 km2) from 1986 to 2015, with a corresponding increase in the mean land surface temperature by 4.16°C. As such, there is the need for the adoption of sustainable urban planning strategies with green vegetation conservation initiatives for modern city planners. This would help reduce urban land surface temperatures while promoting clean air circulation within the city.

We evaluated the long-term pattern of leaf area index (LAI) dynamics and radiation use efficiency (RUE) in short rotation poplar in uncoppice (single stem) and coppice (multi-stem) plantations, and compared them to annual field crops (AFCs) as an alternative for bioenergy production while being more sensitive to weather fluctuation and climate change. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of LAI and RUE as indicators for bioenergy production and indicators of response to changing environmental conditions. For this study, we selected poplar clone J-105 (Populus nigra L. × P. maximowiczii A. Henry) and AFCs such as barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), maize (Zea mays L.), and oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.), and compared their aboveground dry mass (AGDM) production in relation to their LAI development and RUE. The results of the study showed the long-term maximum LAI (LAImax) to be 9.5 in coppice poplar when compared to AFCs, where LAImax did not exceed the value 6. The RUE varied between 1.02 and 1.48 g MJ−1 in short rotation poplar and between 0.72 and 2.06 g MJ−1 in AFCs. We found both LAI and RUE contributed to AGDM production in short rotation poplar and RUE only contributed in AFCs. The study confirms that RUE may be considered an AGDM predictor of short rotation poplar and AFCs. This may be utilized for empirical estimates of yields and also contribute to improve the models of short rotation poplar and AFCs for the precise prediction of biomass accumulation in different environmental conditions.

Root structure parameters, root biomass and allometric relationships between above- and belowground biomass were investigated in young Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) trees cultivated inside the glass domes with ambient (AC, 375 μmol(CO2) mol−1) and elevated (EC, A + 375 μmol(CO2) mol−1) atmospheric CO2 concentrations ([CO2]). After 8 years of fumigation, a mean EC tree in comparison with AC one exhibited about 37 % higher belowground biomass. The growth of primary root structure was unaffected by elevated [CO2]; however, the biomass of secondary roots growing on the primary root structure and the biomass of secondary roots growing in the zone between the soil surface and the first primary root ramification were significantly higher in EC comparing with AC treatment about 58 and 70 %, respectively. The finest root’s (diameter up to 1 mm) biomass as well as length and surface area of both primary and secondary root structures showed the highest difference between the treatments; advancing EC to AC by 43 % on average. Therefore, Norway spruce trees cultivated under well-watered and rather nitrogen-poor soil conditions responded to the air elevated [CO2] environment by the enhancement of the secondary root structure increment, by enlargement of root length and root absorbing area, and also by alternation of root to aboveground organ biomass proportion. Higher root to leaf and root to stem basal area ratios could be beneficial for Norway spruce trees to survive periods with limited soil water availability.

Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst) grown under ambient (365-377 μmol(CO(2)) mol(-1); AC) and elevated (700 μmol(CO(2)) mol(-1); EC) CO(2) concentrations within glass domes with automatically adjustable windows and on an open-air control site were studied after 8 years of treatment. The effect of EC on photosynthesis, mesophyll structure and phenolics accumulation in sun and shade needles was examined. Photosynthetic assimilation and dark respiration rates were measured gasometrically; the structural parameters of mesophyll were determined using confocal microscopy and stereological methods. The contents of total soluble phenolics and lignin were assessed spectrophotometrically, and localizations of different phenolic groups were detected histochemically on needle cross-sections. EC enhanced the light-saturated CO(2) assimilation rate and reduced dark respiration in the current-year needles. No effects of CO(2) enrichment on mesophyll structural parameters were observed. Similarly, the accumulation and localization of phenolics and lignin remained unaffected by EC treatment. Needles differentiated into sun and shade ecotypes in the same manner and to the same extent irrespective of CO(2) treatment. Based on these results, it is apparent that the EC-induced enhancement of photosynthesis is not related to changes in the examined structural parameters of mesophyll and accumulation of phenolic compounds.

The present paper is focused on an assessment of the effects of stand density and leaf area development on radiation use efficiency in the mountain cultivated Norway spruce stand. The young even-aged (17-years-old in 1998) plantation of Norway spruce was divided into two experimental plots differing in their stand density in 1995. During the late spring of 2001 next cultivating high-type of thinning of 15% intensity in a reduction of stocking density was performed. The PAR regime of investigated stands was continually measured since 1992. Total aboveground biomass (TBa) and TBa increment (ΔTBa) were obtained on the basis of stand inventory. The dynamic of LAI development showed a tendency to be saturated, i.e. the LAI value close to 11 seems to be maximal for the local conditions of the investigated mountain cultivated Norway spruce stand in the Beskids Mts. Remarkable stimuli (up to 17%) of LAI formation were started in 2002, i.e. as an immediate response to realized thinning. Thus, the positive effect of thin - ning on LAI increase was confirmed. The data set of absorbed PAR and produced TBa in the period 1998-2003 was processed by the linear regression of Monteith's model, which provided the values of the coefficient of solar energy conversion efficiency into biomass formation ( e). The differences in e values between the dense and sparse plot after realized thinning amounted to 18%.

Studies of selected morphological needle parameters were carried out on young (17–19 year old) Norway spruce trees cultivated inside glass domes at ambient (A, 370 μmol (CO2) mol−1) and elevated (E, 700 μmol (CO2) mol−1) atmospheric CO2 concentrations [CO2] beginning in 1997. Annual analyses performed from 2002 to 2004 revealed higher values for needle length (especially for current needles, up to 18%) and projected needle area (up to 13%) accompanied by lower values for specific needle area (up to 15% lower, as quantified by needle mass to projected area ratio) in the E treatment compared to the A treatment. Statistically significant differences for most of the investigated morphological parameters were found in young needles in the well irradiated sun-adapted crown parts, particularly under water-limiting soil conditions in 2003. This was likely a result of different water relations in E compared to A trees as investigated under temperate water stress (Kuper et al. in Biol Plantarum 50:603–609, 2006). Furthermore, E trees had much higher absorbing root area, which modified and enhanced root:shoot as well as root:conductive stem area proportions. These hydraulic properties and early seasonal stimulation of photosynthesis forced advanced needle development in E trees, particularly under limited soil water conditions. The number of needles per unit shoot length was found to be unaffected by elevated [CO2].

Measurements of stem respiration were conducted for a period of four years (1999–2002) in 14-year old Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst) trees exposed to ambient (CA) and elevated CO2 concentration (CE; ambient plus 350 μmol mol−1). Stem respiration measurements of six trees per treatment were carried out 2–3 times per month during the growing season. Stem respiration in CE treatment was higher (up to 16 %) than in CA treatment. Temperature response of stem respiration (Q10) for the whole experimental period ranged between 1.65–2.57 in CA treatment and 2.24–2.56 in CE treatment. The mean stem respiration rate normalized to 10 °C (R10) in CA and CE treatments ranged between 1.67–1.95 and 2.19–2.72 μmol(CO2) m−2 s−1, respectively. Seasonal variations in stem respiration were related to temperature and tree growth.

Under elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations, soil carbon (C) inputs are typically enhanced, suggesting larger soil C sequestration potential. However, soil C losses also increase and progressive nitrogen (N) limitation to plant growth may reduce the CO2 effect on soil C inputs with time. We compiled a data set from 131 manipulation experiments, and used meta-analysis to test the hypotheses that: (1) elevated atmospheric CO2 stimulates soil C inputs more than C losses, resulting in increasing soil C stocks; and (2) that these responses are modulated by N. Our results confirm that elevated CO2 induces a C allocation shift towards below-ground biomass compartments. However, the increased soil C inputs were offset by increased heterotrophic respiration (Rh), such that soil C content was not affected by elevated CO2. Soil N concentration strongly interacted with CO2 fumigation: the effect of elevated CO2 on fine root biomass and –production and on microbial activity increased with increasing soil N concentration, while the effect on soil C content decreased with increasing soil N concentration. These results suggest that both plant growth and microbial activity responses to elevated CO2 are modulated by N availability, and that it is essential to account for soil N concentration in C cycling analyses.

Bud phenology and shoot elongation growth were monitored on Norway spruce ( Picea abies (L.) Karst.) trees grown inside glass domes with adjustable windows for six years under ambient (355 µmol CO 2 ∙mol -1 ) and elevated (700 µmol CO 2 ∙mol -1 ) atmospheric CO 2 concentrations CO 2 . Each treatment consisted of two stand densities - sparse (5,000 trees∙ha -1 ) and dense (10,000 trees∙ha -1 ). The age of spruce trees was 10 years at the beginning of the experiment. Elevated CO 2 slightly accelerated the consequential bud germinating phases and it significantly induced shoot elon - gation growth, especially of sun-exposed shoots in a stand with sparse density. This accelerated growth lasted one to three weeks after full bud development in E compared to A. At the end of the growing season the total shoot length did not show any differences between the treatments. We supposed that limiting nitrogen supply to needles slowed down subsequent shoot elongation growth in E treatment. Nevertheless, faster shoot growth in elevated CO 2 conditions can enhance the carbon sink in spruce due to prolongation of the growing season.

The hypothesis that elevated CO2 leads to a faster induction of photosynthesis was tested using 7–8-year-old seedlings of broadleaved Fagus sylvatica and coniferous Picea abies exposed for three growing seasons to ambient (385 μmol mol−1; AC) and elevated CO2 (700 μmol mol−1; EC). Since the photosynthetic induction is primarily determined by light modulations of Rubisco activity and stomata opening, the hypothesis was based on the following presumptions: (1) EC reduces the content of Rubisco in leaves, (2) decreases stomatal conductance, and (3) has no effect on the rates of stomatal opening and Rubisco activation upon illumination. Thus, reduced maxima of Rubisco activity and stomatal conductance should be reached faster in EC compared to AC plants after leaf transition from dark to light. The initial presumptions were confirmed, since reductions of Rubisco content (up to 28% and 48%) and light-saturated stomatal conductance (GSmax; up to 40% and 50%) were observed in EC treated F. sylvatica and P. abies as compared to AC ones. However, the presumption of constant induction rates was not confirmed. A slight decrease of the time constant for Rubisco activation (14–27%) was observed as the result of EC treatment in both tree species, whereas stomatal opening rates significantly decreased in F. sylvatica (up to 48%) and remained almost unchanged in P. abies. Thus, EC treatment led to the stimulation of the initial phase of photosynthetic induction. This was demonstrated by higher values of the induction state 60 s after leaf illumination (IS60), determined in both F. sylvatica (up to 129%) and P. abies (up to 108%) as compared to AC treatment. In contrast, the stimulation of the secondary phase of photosynthetic induction, reflecting mainly stomatal opening and described by the time required to reach 90% of maximum steady-state photosynthesis (T90(A)), was only 5–15% in F. sylvatica (non-significant) and 21–28% in P. abies (significant). The reduced rates of stomatal opening by EC treatment thus may limit the general validity of the hypothesis.
