The nutrient concentrations in the Wadden Sea are severely influenced by anthropogenic influences. For some parts of the area a substantial part of the winter concentrations is considered to be of anthropogenic origin. Since 1987, a reduction of this human impact is an aim of the environmental policy of the North Sea riparian states. In this paper monitoring data and salinity-normalized nutrient concentrations from a station at Norderney are presented which provide information about the development in the period 1985-1996. No changes were observed in the silicate concentrations. The reduction of the phosphate concentrations which was detected in the Norderney time-series corresponds with results from other monitoring stations. As well, the DIN concentrations show a decrease. Here the interpretation of the data is more difficult. Contradictory statements about the development of the nitrogen loads are available for the river Ems which is the nearest point source for nutrients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
