MFI twin crystals on b-axis oriented zeolite MFI nanosheet films were suppressed in the presence of dihydroxybenzene isomers. The resulting films presented an ultra-thin grain thickness of 30–45 nm within hours.

In the last decade, zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) have been studied extensively for their potential as selective separation membranes. In this review, we highlight unique structural properties of ZIFs that allow them to achieve certain important separations, like that of propylene from propane, and summarize the state of the art in ZIF thin-film deposition on porous substrates and their modification by postsynthesis treatments. We also review the reported membrane performance for representative membrane synthesis approaches and attempt to rank the synthesis methods with respect to potential for scalability. To compare the dependence of membrane performance on membrane synthesis methods and operating conditions, we map out fluxes and separation factors of selected ZIF-8 membranes for propylene/propane separation. Finally, we provide future directions considering the importance of further improvements in scalability, cost effectiveness, and stable performance under industrially relevant conditions.

Recent advances in the synthesis of MFI zeolite nanosheets have led to highly selective membranes that are promising candidates for small-scale ammonia separation from ammonia/nitrogen/hydrogen mixtures in distributed green ammonia production plants. Using force-field-based molecular simulations, we evaluate the performance of bulk all-silica MFI zeolite and a 3 nm thick all-silica MFI nanosheet for ammonia/nitrogen/hydrogen separations at moderate temperature and pressure conditions (T = 373 K, p = 5 bar) as well as conditions relevant for a membrane-based reactor-separator process (T = 523 or 623 K, p = 80 bar). Isobaric-isothermal Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo (GEMC) simulations were carried out to understand the selective adsorption behavior for these mixtures. Molecular dynamics simulations in the canonical ensemble were performed to examine the transport behavior of ammonia in a mixture with nitrogen or hydrogen at loadings obtained from the GEMC simulations. Our results show that both bulk MFI and the nanosheet with explicit surface silanols are highly selective toward ammonia adsorption, but the adsorption selectivity decreases by factors of 4 and 10 for ammonia/nitrogen and ammonia/hydrogen mixtures as the temperature is increased from 373 to 623 K. Conversely, the diffusion selectivities toward ammonia are more favorable at process-relevant temperatures and for the MFI nanosheet. At T = 523 K and p = 80 bar, our simulations predict overall separation factors of 3.8 ± 0.2 and 4.5 ± 0.3 for ammonia/nitrogen and ammonia/hydrogen mixtures, respectively, in the bulk MFI zeolite, and separation factors of 8.6 ± 0.4 and 12.5 ± 0.8, respectively, for the MFI nanosheet.

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are a subset of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with more than 200 characterized crystalline and amorphous networks made of divalent transition metal centers (e.g., Zn2+ and Co2+) linked by imidazolate linkers. ZIF thin films have been pursued intensively motivated by the desire to prepare membranes for selective gas and liquid separations. To achieve membranes with high throughput, as in Å-scale biological channels with nanometer-scale pathlengths, ZIF films with the minimum possible thickness, down to just one unit cell, are highly desired. Control of ZIF film thickness at the 10-nm-scale may also enable emerging, MOF-inspired, applications including patterned crystalline MOF films, and amorphous organic-inorganic resists for high-resolution electron-beam (e-beam) and extreme UV (EUV) lithography. However, the state-of-the-art methods yield ZIF films with thicknesses exceeding 40 nanometers. Here, we report a deposition method from ultra-dilute precursor mixtures that within minutes yields uniform ZIF deposits with nm-scale thickness control. On crystalline substrate such as graphene, two-dimensional crystalline ZIF (2DZIF) film with thickness of a unit-cell could be achieved, which composed of a six-membered zincimidazolate coordination ring enabling record-high H2 permselective separation performance. Deposition under identical conditions on amorphous substrates yields macroscopically smooth amorphous ZIF (aZIF) films, which can be used as negative- and positive-tone resists yielding pattern features down to 20 nm. The method reported here will likely accelerate the development of 2D crystalline and ultrathin amorphous MOF films for applications ranging from separation membranes to sensors and patterning for microelectronic applications.

Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and other nucleotides can be irreversibly bound to the metal-organic framework (MOF) MIL-101(Cr). Analysis of X-ray diffraction data suggests that the location of the adsorbed ATP molecule is in proximity of the Cr3 clusters. Solid-state NMR and DFT calculations indicate that ATP is bound to MIL-101(Cr) through linkages of the terminal phosphate group with Cr(III) of the framework. In the presence of Cu(II) ions, the MOF-supported nucleotides can function as stable and reusable enantioselective heterogeneous catalysts for reactions like Diels-Alder and Michael addition. Compared to the corresponding homogeneous nucleotide-based artificial metalloenzymes (ArMs), the MOF-supported nucleotide-based ArMs exhibit significantly enhanced activity and selectivity in certain cases, demonstrating their potential as a new class of enantioselective heterogeneous catalysts.

Synthesis of a pentasil‐type zeolite with ultra‐small few‐unit‐cell crystalline domains, which we call FDP (few‐unit‐cell crystalline domain pentasil), is reported. FDP is made using bis‐1,5(tributyl ammonium) pentamethylene cations as structure directing agent (SDA). This di‐quaternary ammonium SDA combines butyl ammonium, in place of the one commonly used for MFI synthesis, propyl ammonium, and a five‐carbon nitrogen‐connecting chain, in place of the six‐carbon connecting chain SDAs that are known to fit well within the MFI pores. X‐ray diffraction analysis and electron microscopy imaging of FDP indicate ca. 10 nm crystalline domains organized in hierarchical micro‐/meso‐porous aggregates exhibiting mesoscopic order with an aggregate particle size up to ca. 5 μm. Al and Sn can be incorporated into the FDP zeolite framework to produce active and selective methanol‐to‐hydrocarbon and glucose isomerization catalysts, respectively., A simple di‐quaternary ammonium cation was used as structure‐directing agent to prepare few‐unit‐cell (ca. 10 nm) MFI type zeolite catalysts and adsorbents with a wide range of composition (pure silica, aluminosilicate and stannosilicate). The SDA design was selected based on simple heuristic arguments regarding contributions of its structural elements to early crystal growth characteristics of MFI.

The anammox process has been used for side-stream nitrogen removal. Mainstream anammox is challenging, however, as a result of low ammonium concentrations and retention times that wash out slow-growing anammox bacteria. To overcome these challenges, hollow fiber membranes with zeolite-coated surfaces were prepared to create near-surface microenvironments that mimic attributes of side-stream treatment systems. Results showed that in mainstream-type media, zeolite-coated membranes enhanced the growth of anammox bacteria on the membranes and in the bulk liquid of the reactor compared to reactors containing uncoated control membranes. The zeolite-coated membranes also improved the average total nitrogen (TN) removal to 73 ± 10% compared to 1 ± 49% in the control reactors. Additional experiments containing zeolite particles demonstrated that increasing zeolite mass increased the number of anammox gene copies present and improved TN removal, with effluent TN concentrations decreasing from 51.8 ± 5.9 to 7.78 ± 2.6 mg-N/L (P = 0.00085) as zeolite increased from 0.05 to 1.0 g/reactor, respectively. These results suggest that membranes/surfaces containing a greater quantity of zeolite should further improve retention of anammox bacteria and TN removal. Application of such membranes in an integrated fixed-film activated sludge (IFAS)-type system or membrane-aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) with intermittent aeration and low bulk DO concentrations should facilitate mainstream anammox.

Low-silica faujasite (FAU) zeolites (with Si/Al ratio of ca. 1.2–1.8) sustain framework integrity and porosity upon moderate ion exchange (0.01 M NH₄NO₃ solution for 1 h at ambient temperature), which introduces two kinds of protons, distinctive in reactivity and coordination to the zeolite framework, within supercages (HSUP). Moderate ion exchange limited within supercages transpires while maintaining full occupancy of Na⁺ cations within associated sodalite cages; this in turn helps stabilize the framework of low-silica H-FAU zeolites. Protons located on site II (H₃₆₃₀) and site III (H₃₆₅₀) within supercages on low-silica FAU zeolites can be classified and enumerated by virtue of infrared spectroscopy, providing an opportunity to compare reactivities of these distinct protons for monomolecular protolytic reactions of propane. Protons on site II exhibit prominently higher reactivity for monomolecular propane dehydrogenation and cracking than protons on site III. Low-silica proton-form FAU zeolites (zeolite X) upon moderate ion exchange possess protons on site III that are unavailable on high-silica FAU zeolites (zeolite Y) and limit ion exchange within supercages, providing unprecedented high-temperature structural and chemical stability (>773 K) and enabling their application as solid-acid catalysts.

Vapor-phase treatment of ZIF-8 membranes with manganese(II) acetylacetonate (Mn(acac)2 ) allows permselectivity tuning. Propylene/propane selectivity increases from 31 to 210 after the Mn(acac)2 treatment at 165 °C for 30 min, while selectivities increase from 14.6 to 242 for H2 /CH4 , from 2.9 to 38 for CO2 /CH4 , from 2.4 to 29 for CO2 /N2 , and from 2.9 to 7.5 for O2 /N2 , after Mn(acac)2 treatment at 175 °C for 30 min. Stable equimolar propylene/propane mixture selectivity of 165 at ambient temperature and 4 bar equimolar feed with a propylene flux of 8.3×10-4 mol m-2 s-1 is established. A control experiment excludes thermal treatment alone causing these changes. XPS analysis reveals the presence of Mn(acac)2 on the outer surface of the vapor-treated ZIF-8 membranes while no other changes are detectable by X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy.

Zeolite nanosheets can be used for the fabrication of low-defect-density, thin, and oriented zeolite separation membranes. However, methods for manipulating their morphology are limited, hindering progress toward improved performance. We report the direct synthesis (i.e., without using exfoliation, etching, or other top-down processing) of thin, flat MFI nanosheets and demonstrate their use as high-performance membranes for xylene isomer separations. Our MFI nanosheets were synthesized using nanosheet fragments as seeds instead of the previously used MFI nanoparticles. The obtained MFI nanosheets exhibit improved thickness uniformity and are free of rotational and MEL intergrowths as shown by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging. The nanosheets can form well-packed nanosheet coatings. Upon gel-free secondary growth, the obtained zeolite MFI membranes show high separation performance for xylene isomers at elevated temperature (e.g., p -xylene flux up to 1.5 × 10 −3 mol m −2 s −1 and p -/ o -xylene separation factor of ~600 at 250°C).

Summary This work describes the design and implementation of an automated device for catalytic materials testing by direct modifications to a gas chromatograph (GC). The setup can be operated as a plug-flow isothermal reactor and enables the control of relevant parameters such as reaction temperature and reactant partial pressures directly from the GC. High-quality kinetic data (including reaction rates, product distributions, and activation barriers) can be obtained at almost one-tenth of the fabrication cost of analogous commercial setups. Phosphorus-modified all-silica zeolites exhibit activity and selectivity in certain Bronsted acid catalyzed reactions for biomass conversion. In an effort to achieve similar performance with catalysts having well-defined sites, we report the incorporation of Bronsted acidity to metal-organic frameworks with the UiO-66 topology, achieved by attaching phosphonic acid to the 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate ligand and using it to form UiO-66-PO3 H2 by post-synthesis modification. Characterization reveals that UiO-66-PO3 H2 retains stability similar to UiO-66, and exhibits weak Bronsted acidity, as demonstrated by titrations, alcohol dehydration, and dehydra-decyclization of 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (2-MTHF). For the later reaction, the reported catalyst exhibits site-time yields and selectivity approaching that of phosphoric acid on all-silica zeolites. Using solid-state NMR and deprotonation energy calculations, the chemical environments of P and the corresponding acidities are determined.

Mesoporous silica is often employed as a coating material in core-shell nanoparticles to decrease the possibility of sintering or aggregation of the core particles. In this work, we discovered a surprising morphological transformation during the sulfidation and regeneration (oxidation) of core-shell CuO@mSiO2 materials designed for H2S capture. Although CuS cores were still encapsulated within the silica shells after in situ sulfidation, hollow silica shells formed during the regeneration step as CuO leached out of the shell and aggregated into larger particles. The successful sulfidation of pristine CuO@mSiO2 was facilitated by the restraining effect of silica shells on lattice growth from CuO into CuS, and the mesopores allowed for volume expansion. The phase and morphology changes during the regeneration (oxidation) process leading to the hollow shells were investigated by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. It was observed that the cores remained encaged during the disproportionation of CuS to Cu2S, which is the first step in the oxidation of CuS. However, voids were generated when Cu2S was oxidized and reacted with water generated from the condensation of silica. A possible mechanism for this transformation involves the outward diffusion of copper ions through the mesoporous silica, leading to the migration of core particles. This migration was further accelerated by the elevated temperature in the regeneration process and promoted by the formation of the copper sulfate hydroxide through the reaction with water. This work provides key insights into the chemical stability of such core-shell structures under the influence of diffusion-driven structural transformations.

Zeolite MFI is a widely used catalyst and adsorbent that also holds promise as a thin-film membrane. The discovery of nanometre-thick two-dimensional (2D) MFI nanosheets has facilitated methods for thin-film zeolite fabrication that open new horizons for membrane science and engineering. However, the crystal structure of 2D-MFI nanosheets and their relationship to separation performance remain elusive. Using transmission electron microscopy, we find that one- to few-unit-cell-wide intergrowths of zeolite MEL exist within 2D-MFI. We identify the planar distribution of these 1D or near-1D-MEL domains, and show that a fraction of nanosheets have high (~25% by volume) MEL content while the majority of nanosheets are MEL-free. Atomistic simulations show that commensurate knitting of 1D-MEL within 2D-MFI creates more rigid and highly selective pores compared to pristine MFI nanosheets, and permeation experiments show a separation factor of 60 using an industrially relevant (undiluted 1 bar xylene mixture) feed. Confined growth in graphite is shown to increase the MEL content in MFI nanosheets. Our observation of these intergrowths suggests strategies for the development of ultra-selective zeolite membranes. Two-dimensional zeolite MFI nanosheets show ultra-selective separation of xylene isomers, but it was not known why this occurs. Here, using electron microscopy and atomistic simulation, it is shown that one-dimensional intergrowths of zeolite MEL enable selectivity by formation of more rigid pores.

1,3-Pentadiene (piperylene) is an important monomer in the manufacturing of adhesives, plastics, and resins. It can be derived from biomass by the tandem ring-opening and dehydration (dehydra-decyclization) of 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (2-MTHF), but competing reaction pathways and the formation of another isomer (1,4-pentadiene) have limited piperylene yields to MFI > BEA at a given temperature (523 K), indicating the non-identical nature of active sites in these weak solid acids. The diene distribution remained far from equilibrium and was tuned towards the desirable conjugated diene (1,3-pentadiene) by facile isomerization of 1,4-pentadiene. This tuning capability was facilitated by high bed residence times, as well as the smaller micropore sizes among the zeolite frameworks considered. The suppression of competing pathways, and promotion of 1,4-pentadiene isomerization events lead to a hitherto unreported ∼86% 1,3-pentadiene yield and an overall ∼89% combined linear C5 dienes’ yield at near quantitative (∼98%) 2-MTHF conversion on the borosilicate B-MWW, without a significant reduction in diene selectivities for at least 80 hours time-on-stream under low space velocity (0.85 g reactant per g cat. per h) and high temperature (658 K) conditions. Finally, starting with iso-conversion levels (ca. 21–26%) and using total turnover numbers (TONs) accrued over the entire catalyst lifetime as the stability criterion, borosilicates were demonstrated to be significantly more stable than aluminosilicates under reaction conditions (∼3–6× higher TONs).

Faujasite (FAU) zeolites (with Si/Al ratio of ca. 1.7) undergo mild dealumination at moderate ion exchange conditions (0.01 to 0.6 M of NH 4 NO 3 solutions) resulting in protons circumscribed by sodalite cages becoming accessible for reaction without conspicuous changes to bulk crystallinity. The ratio of protons in sodalite cages (H SOD ) to supercages (H SUP ) can be systematically manipulated from 0 to ca. 1 by adjusting ammonium concentrations used in ion exchange. The fraction of accessible protons in the sodalite cages is assessed by virtue of infrared spectra for H-D exchange of deuterated propane based on the band area ratio of OD 2620 / OD 2680 (OD SOD / OD SUP ). Protons in sodalite cages (H SOD ) show higher rate constants of propane dehydrogenation ( k D ) and cracking ( k C ) than protons in supercages (H SUP ) plausibly due to confinement effects being more prominent in smaller voids. Rate constants of dehydrogenation and cracking including k D / k C ratios are also augmented as the fraction of accessible protons in the sodalite cages is enhanced. These effects of accessibility and reactivity of protons in sodalite cages hitherto inconspicuous are revealed herein via methods that systematically increase accessibility of cations located in sodalite cages.

Patterning metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) at submicrometer scale is a crucial yet challenging task for their integration in miniaturized devices. Here we report an electron beam (e-beam) assisted, bottom-up approach for patterning of two MOFs, zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF), ZIF-8 and ZIF-67. A mild pretreatment of metal oxide precursors with linker vapor leads to the sensitization of the oxide surface to e-beam irradiation, effectively inhibiting subsequent conversion of the oxide to ZIFs in irradiated areas, while ZIF growth in non-irradiated areas is not affected. Well-resolved patterns with features down to the scale of 100 nm can be achieved. This developer-free, all-vapor phase technique will facilitate the incorporation of MOFs in micro- and nanofabrication processes., There is a long-standing interest in the development of patterning process for porous materials.
