Temporal variations in lava chemistry at active submarine volcanoes are difficult to decipher due to the challenges of dating their eruptions. Here, we use high-precision measurements of 226Ra-230Th disequilibria in basalts from Kamaʻehuakanaloa (formerly Lōʻihi) to estimate model ages for recent eruptions of this submarine Hawaiian pre-shield volcano. The ages range from ca. 0 to 2300 yr (excluding two much older samples) with at least five eruptions in the last ~150 yr. Two snapshots of the magmatic evolution of Kamaʻehuakanaloa (or “Kamaʻehu”) are revealed. First, a long-term transition from alkalic to tholeiitic volcanism was nearly complete by ca. 2 ka. Second, a systematic short-term fluctuation in ratios of incompatible elements (e.g., Th/Yb) for summit lavas occurred on a time scale of ~1200 yr. This is much longer than the ~200-yr-long historical cycle in lava chemistry at the neighboring subaerial volcano, Kīlauea. The slower pace of the variation in lava chemistry at Kamaʻehu is most likely controlled by sluggish mantle upwelling on the margin of the Hawaiian plume.

For more than half a century, exploring a complete sequence of the oceanic crust from the seafloor through the Mohorovičić discontinuity (Moho) and into the uppermost mantle has been one of the most challenging missions of scientific ocean drilling. Such a scientific and technological achievement would provide humankind with profound insights into the largest realm of our planet and expand our fundamental understanding of Earth's deep interior and its geodynamic behavior. The formation of new oceanic crust at mid-ocean ridges and its subsequent aging over millions of years, leading to subduction, arc volcanism, and recycling of some components into the mantle, comprise the dominant geological cycle of matter and energy on Earth. Although previous scientific ocean drilling has cored some drill holes into old (> 110 Ma) and young (< 20 Ma) ocean crust, our sampling remains relatively shallow (< 2 km into intact crust) and unrepresentative of average oceanic crust. To date, no hole penetrates more than 100 m into intact average-aged oceanic crust that records the long-term history of seawater–basalt exchange (60 to 90 Myr). In addition, the nature, extent, and evolution of the deep subseafloor biosphere within oceanic crust remains poorly unknown. To address these fundamentally significant scientific issues, an international workshop “Exploring Deep Oceanic Crust off Hawai`i” brought together 106 scientists and engineers from 16 countries that represented the entire spectrum of disciplines, including petrologists, geophysicists, geochemists, microbiologists, geodynamic modelers, and drilling/logging engineers. The aim of the workshop was to develop a full International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) proposal to drill a 2.5 km deep hole into oceanic crust on the North Arch off Hawai`i with the drilling research vessel Chikyu. This drill hole would provide samples down to cumulate gabbros of mature (∼ 80 Ma) oceanic crust formed at a half spreading rate of ∼ 3.5 cm a−1. A Moho reflection has been observed at ∼ 5.5 km below the seafloor at this site, and the workshop concluded that the proposed 2.5 km deep scientific drilling on the North Arch off Hawai`i would provide an essential “pilot hole” to inform the design of future mantle drilling.

We report here the first occurrence of celestine (SrSO4) in recent oceanic basalts. Celestine was found in moderately altered accidental volcanic blocks from Ka‘ula Island, a rejuvenated tuff cone in the northern Hawaiian Islands. This occurrence is novel not only for the presence of celestine but also for the absence of barite, the sulfate mineral most commonly found in oceanic hydrothermal deposits. Celestine was found lining vesicles and partially fillings voids within the matrix of several high Sr (2200–6400 ppm) Ka‘ula basalts. High-quality wavelength-dispersive microprobe analyses of celestine are reported here for near end-member celestine (>90%). The Ka‘ula celestine deposits are compositionally heterogeneous with large variations in Ba content (0.9–7.5 wt%) within single mineral aggregates. The most likely source of the Sr for celestine in the Ka‘ula basalts was the host basalt, which contains ~1200 ppm. This is about 10 times higher than normally found in mid-ocean ridge basalts and 4 times greater than commonly observed in Hawaiian basalts. Hydrothermal alteration by S-bearing fluids related to the eruption that transported these accidentally fragments probably mobilized Sr in the blocks. These S-rich solutions later precipitated celestine during or following the eruption. We were unable to confirm the origin for the Sr via Sr isotope measures because the Ka‘ula celestine was too fine grained, friable, and widely dispersed to be concentrated for Sr isotope analyses. Future studies of basalts from active volcanoes on oceanic islands, especially for basalts with elevated Sr contents (>1000 ppm), should be aware of the possible presence of celestine in moderately altered lavas.

The architecture, formation, and modification of oceanic plates are fundamental to our understanding of key geologic processes of the Earth. Geophysical surveys were conducted around a site near the Hawaiian Islands (northeastern Hawaiian North Arch region; Hawaiian North Arch hereafter), which is one of three potential sites for an International Ocean Discovery Program mantle drilling proposal for the Pacific plate that was submitted in 2012. The Hawaiian North Arch site is located in 78–81 Ma Cretaceous crust, which had an estimated full spreading rate of 7–8 cm yr−1. This site fills a major gap in our understanding of oceanic crust. Previously drilling has been skewed to young or older crust ( or >110 Ma) and slow-spread crust. P-wave velocity structure in the uppermost mantle of the Hawaiian North Arch shows a strong azimuthal anisotropy, whereas Moho reflections below the basement are variable: strong and continuous, weak, diffuse, or unclear. We assume that the strength of the Moho reflection is related to the aging of the oceanic plate. The Hawaiian volcanic chain (200 km to the southwest of the proposed drill site) and the nearby North Arch magmatism on the proposed Hawaiian North Arch sites might also have affected recognition of the Moho via deformation and/or magma intrusion into the lower crust of the uppermost mantle. This workshop report describes scientific targets for 2 km deep-ocean drilling in the Hawaiian North Arch region in order to provide information about the lower crust from unrecovered age and spreading rate gaps from previous ocean drillings. Other scientific objectives to be achieved by drilling cores before reaching the target depth of the project are also described in this report.

The high frequency of historical eruptions at Kīlauea Volcano presents an exceptional opportunity to address fundamental questions related to the transport, storage, and interaction of magmas within rift zones. The Nāpau Crater area on Kīlauea’s East Rift Zone (ERZ) experienced nine fissure eruptions within 50 years (1961–2011). Most of the magma intruded during these frequent eruptions remained stored within the rift zone, creating a potential magma mixing depot within the ERZ. The superbly monitored and sampled 2011 eruption (Puʻu ʻŌʻō episode 59) presents an extraordinary opportunity to evaluate magma mixing processes within the ERZ. Whole-rock, glass, and olivine compositions were determined, not only for lava from the 2011 eruption, but also for a new suite of Nāpau Crater area samples from the 1963, 1965, 1968, 1983, and 1997 eruptions, as well as the previously undocumented 1922 eruption. Whole-rock XRF data revealed two geochemically distinct magma batches for episode 59: one less evolved (∼6·6 wt % MgO, 0·46 wt % K2O) than the other (∼6·2 wt % MgO, 0·58 wt % K2O). Episode 59 lava is remarkably aphyric (∼0·1 vol. % phenocrysts), making use of mineralogy to identify parent magma affinities problematic. Linear compositional trends of whole-rock major and trace elements, and reversely zoned olivine crystals indicate episode 59 lavas underwent magma mixing. Least squares regression calculations and plots of major and trace element data, were used to evaluate whether the episode 59 samples are products of mixing summit-derived magma with residual magma from previous Nāpau Crater area eruptions. The regression results and trace element ratios are inconsistent with previously proposed mixing scenarios, but they do support mixing between summit-derived magma and residual magma from the 1983 and 1997 Nāpau Crater area eruptions. These magmas were stored in physically and chemically distinct pods at depths of 1·6–3·0 km prior to mixing with new magma intruded from the summit to produce the episode 59 lava. One pod contained a fractionated equivalent of 1983 lava, and the other a hybrid of compositions similar to 1983 and 1997 lavas. The petrology of episode 59 lava demonstrates that magmas from two previous eruptions (1983 and 1997) were available to mix with magma intruded from the summit region. This study clarifies the pre-eruptive history of the mixed episode 59 lava, and elucidates the evolution of the volcano's magmatic system in a region of frequent eruptions.

A geochemical time-series analysis of lavas from frequently active basaltic volcanoes has the potential to reveal the enigmatic mantle controls on volcanic behavior and hazards. In May 1924, the century-long lava lake within Halemaʻumaʻu pit crater at the summit of Kīlauea Volcano drained and the floor of Halemaʻumaʻu collapsed, triggering ∼3 weeks of phreatic explosions due to the interaction of groundwater with hot rock. For the next three decades, eruptions at Kīlauea were sporadic (the longest hiatus was from 1934 to 1952), small in volume, and short (typically 10 km). The Pb isotopic heterogeneity of the samples on short length (hand specimen to lava flow) and time (∼1–4 yr) scales can be explained by inefficient mixing as small batches of contaminated magma were delivered to the remnants of Kīlauea’s summit magma storage reservoir. Our results confirm that the Pb isotope ratios of basalts from ocean-island volcanoes may be significantly modified by assimilation of materials from the underlying oceanic crust. In particular, the 207Pb/204Pb ratio may be a sensitive tracer of such crustal contamination at Hawaiian shield volcanoes. Mauna Loa lavas display a factor of ∼5 more scatter towards higher 207Pb/204Pb at a given 206Pb/204Pb ratio than most Kīlauea lavas (excluding the samples from 1912 to 1954). This might be caused by more pervasive crustal contamination at Mauna Loa due to its lower magma supply rate over the last ∼4 kyr.

The deep mantle carbon content and flux are fundamental quantities in understanding global volatile cycles and distributions. Here, we present CO2 concentrations measured in 407 olivine-hosted melt inclusions from Hualalai, Kilauea, Koolau, Loihi, and Mauna Loa to constrain the Hawaiian mantle CO2 content and flux. Quantification of melt inclusion CO2 is complicated by the ubiquitous presence of vapor or “shrinkage” bubbles. The contribution from exsolved shrinkage bubble CO2 was determined from the measured bubble size and a CO2 equation of state, and added to the dissolved CO2 to reconstruct total melt inclusion CO2 concentrations. Bubbles typically contain ∼90% of melt inclusion C, much of which may be sequestered in precipitated phases on bubble walls, and thus not amenable to measurement by Raman spectroscopy. Based on our dataset of total (dissolved + bubble) CO2 concentrations, we estimate that parental melts from the five Hawaiian volcanoes have CO2 concentrations ranging from 3900 to 10,000 ppm CO2. Among the active volcanoes, CO2 concentrations decrease to the northwest, likely reflecting mantle source heterogeneity, although differences in CO2 degassing related to the relative depths of the magma chambers may also play a role. Mantle sources of the Hawaiian volcanoes range from 380 to 480 ppm CO2 suggesting that the Hawaiian plume is at least a factor of ∼4 more C-rich than the upper mantle sampled by mid-ocean ridge basalts. This enrichment is likely due to the presence of recycled surficial C and/or C-rich primitive material in the Hawaiian mantle.

The 2018 rift eruption of Kīlauea Volcano presents a superb opportunity to decipher the underlying role of magmatic processes on the behavior and hazards of basaltic volcanoes. Here, we examine the petrogenetic history of the most MgO-rich lavas (~ 7.7–8.7 wt.%) from the voluminous (> 0.8 km3) main phase of this eruption on the volcano’s lower East Rift Zone (LERZ). Our results show that these lavas are compositionally homogeneous, but distinct from recent samples of the Puʻu ʻŌʻō eruption on the middle ERZ (MERZ) and the summit lava lake within Halemaʻumaʻu pit crater. The MgO-rich 2018 LERZ lavas have relatively high K2O and TiO2 abundances at a given MgO value, high Nb/Y ratios, and low CaO/TiO2 and Sr/Zr ratios. These observations preclude a simple hypothesis that the collapse of the caldera in 2018 forced magma from the summit reservoir to erupt directly on the LERZ. Instead, the distinctive chemistry of the MgO-rich 2018 LERZ lavas supports a new model of mixing between three components: (1) olivine-controlled magma, derived from the summit reservoir via Puʻu ʻŌʻō, (2) differentiated magma similar to the earliest lavas from the 2018 rift eruption, and (3) olivine. The differentiated magma was stored within the ERZ since the 1960s. The summit-derived magma (~ 91–95%) accumulated downrift of Puʻu ʻŌʻō and mixed with the differentiated magma (~ 5–9%) over ~ 10 years prior to 2018. This process created a large (> 0.8 km3) magma body within the MERZ that was the direct source of the MgO-rich 2018 LERZ lavas. The magma that was removed from the summit reservoir during the 2018 caldera collapse (up to ~ 0.8 km3) remains within the ERZ, along with any leftover magma from the Puʻu ʻŌʻō and 2018 rift eruptions. The summit reservoir has likely been replenished with magma based on recent lava lake activity within Halemaʻumaʻu from December 2020 to May 2021. Thus, Kīlauea’s plumbing system from the summit to the LERZ may now be flush with magma and primed for a new era of frequent and/or large eruptions.

Mineral-hosted melt inclusions have become an important source of information on magmatic processes. As the number of melt inclusion studies increases, so does the need to establish recommended practice guidelines for collecting and reporting melt inclusion data. These guidelines are intended to ensure certain quality criteria are met and to achieve consistency among published melt inclusion data in order to maximize their utility in the future. Indeed, with the improvement of analytical techniques, new processes affecting melt inclusions are identified. It is thus critical to be able to reprocess any previously published data, such that reporting the raw data is one of the first “recommended practices” for authors and a publication-criteria that reviewers should be sensitive to. Our guidelines start with melt inclusion selection, which is a critical first step, and then continue on to melt inclusion preparation and analysis, covering the entire field of methods applicable to melt inclusions. Dedication In March of 2000, a melt inclusion workshop was held at the Chateau de Sassenage in Grenoble and a companion issue of Chemical Geology entitled “Melt Inclusions at the Millennium” was published. Erik Hauri was heavily involved with the meeting and contributed two landmark papers to the topical issue of Chemical Geology on the use of secondary ion mass spectrometry to analyze volatiles in melt inclusions. When the melt inclusion community re-convened at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in August of 2018, we were saddened that Erik was unable to join us due to his failing health. Less than a month later came the devastating news of his passing at only 52 years of age. In recognition of his incredible contributions to science in general and to the in situ analysis of melt inclusions in particular, the participants and organizers of the WHOI melt inclusion workshop dedicate this collegial paper to Erik Hauri, our colleague, mentor and friend. Thank you Erik.

INTRODUCTION Latino farmworkers lack access to basic needs, including health care services. These farmworkers face barriers common to rural areas (eg, limited health services and public transportation), as well as language barriers, an unfamiliar medical system, no health insurance, and income-based financial challenges exacerbated by a lack of workers' rights. METHODS This study involved focus group discussions to elicit community health priorities and barriers to health care service use among Latinos in rural farm working communities, as well as participants' ideal model for health care services delivery. Free mobile clinics were subsequently implemented at locations and times the community identified as ideal, and pre- and postinterviews of patients' experiences utilizing clinic services, and perceptions of access barriers, were conducted. RESULTS Results from focus group discussions (n = 82) and one-on-one interviews (n = 15) to evaluate mobile clinic health care services use confirmed documented barriers to health care for this population, shed light on structural and cultural barriers to service access, and suggested innovative models for service delivery to Spanish-speaking Latino farmworkers in rural communities. These models should (1) provide care within farm working communities, (2) offer services at times outside of business hours, and (3) encourage provider immersion in patient communities to better understand their health care needs. DISCUSSION Traditional models of care that expect patients to access health care services at brick and mortar structures are impractical for Latino farmworkers in rural communities. Innovative models bringing health care services to community spaces can reduce access barriers and emergency department utilization and improve health outcomes for this structurally vulnerable population.

The hydrogen isotope value (δD) of water indigenous to the mantle is masked by the early degassing and recycling of surface water through Earth's history. High 3He/4He ratios in some ocean island basalts, however, provide a clear geochemical signature of deep, primordial mantle that has been isolated within the Earth's interior from melting, degassing, and convective mixing with the upper mantle. Hydrogen isotopes were measured in high 3He/4He submarine basalt glasses from the Southeast Indian Ridge (SEIR) at the Amsterdam–St. Paul (ASP) Plateau (δD = −51 to −90‰, 3He/4He = 7.6 to 14.1 RA) and in submarine glasses from Loihi seamount south of the island of Hawaii (δD = −70 to −90‰, 3He/4He = 22.5 to 27.8 RA). These results highlight two contrasting patterns of δD for high 3He/4He lavas: one trend toward high δD of approximately −50‰, and another converging at δD = −75‰. These same patterns are evident in a global compilation of previously reported δD and 3He/4He results. We suggest that the high δD values result from water recycled during subduction that is carried into the source region of mantle plumes at the core–mantle boundary where it is mixed with primordial mantle, resulting in high δD and moderately high 3He/4He. Conversely, lower δD values of −75‰, in basalts from Loihi seamount and also trace element depleted mid-ocean ridge basalts, imply a primordial Earth hydrogen isotopic value of −75‰ or lower. δD values down to −100‰ also occur in the most trace element-depleted mid-ocean ridge basalts, typically in association with 87Sr/86Sr ratios near 0.703. These lower δD values may be a result of multi-stage melting history of the upper mantle where minor D/H fractionation could be associated with hydrogen retention in nominally anhydrous residual minerals. Collectively, the predominance of δD around −75‰ in the majority of mid-ocean ridge basalts and in high 3He/4He Loihi basalts is consistent with an origin of water on Earth that was dominated by accretion of chondritic material.

Lithium zoning in zircon and olivine provides a powerful record of crystal histories and magmatic processes in volcanic systems. Characterizing Li behavior in olivine is important because it is one of the few elements in basaltic systems that track short-duration magmatic processes (e.g., less than a few days). However, the potential for trace element coupling and the competing effects of crystal growth and subsequent diffusion obfuscate interpretations of Li zoning patterns and their use for geospeedometry. Here, we use diverse analytical techniques (EPMA, LA-ICPMS, nanoSIMS) to untangle records of growth and diffusion in carefully oriented olivine crystals from Kīlauea (Hawai‘i). Li, P, and Al are targeted because they show correlations despite contrasting behaviors during growth and diffusion. Lithium zoning exhibits two styles: (1) non-coupled, wherein Li (1–3 ppm) shows diffuse zoning over 10s–100s of μm between the crystal core and rim with low (10s of ppm) and homogeneous P, and (2) coupled, wherein sub-ppm Li enrichments

Background The prevalence of penetrating disease in Crohn’s disease (CD) increases progressively over time, and evidence on the medical treatment of this complication is limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of biologic agents in CD complicated with internal fistulising disease. Methods A retrospective analysis of all adult patients from the ENEIDA registry (>68,000 patients) with CD who received at least one biologic agent -anti-TNF, ustekinumab or vedolizumab- for penetrating disease was performed. Exclusion criteria comprised treatment for perianal disease, enterocutaneous, anastomotic or periostomal fistula tracts. The main outcomes were fistula-related surgery and fistula closure on cross-sectional imaging. Preestablished secondary outcomes included the rate of abdominal abscess, the need for percutaneous drainage, the changes in the number of fistula tracts, fistula closure rates, and the safety profile.The baseline characteristics were analyzed by means of descriptive statistics and were compared by non-parametric tests. Predictive factors associated with surgery and fistula closure were evaluated by a multivariable logistic regression and survival analyses. Results A total of 710 patients (median age 38 years [IQR, 28-48], 59% male, 55% L3) receiving 791 biologic treatments were included at 53 sites (701 anti-TNF, 71 ustekinumab, and 19 vedolizumab). Patients had a median of 1 (range 1-5) fistula tracts, 49% of them entero-enteric followed by entero-colic (28%). After a median follow-up of 59 months (IQR, 27-105), 244 patients (31%) required surgery due to internal fistulising complications after 8.5 months (IQR, 3-24). Patients with ileocolonic disease (OR 1.99 [1.22-3.23]), entero-urinary fistulas (OR 2.35 [1.17-4.73]), or with a stricture distal to the fistula (OR 2.1 [1.31-3.36]) showed a higher risk of surgery, with no differences between biologic drugs (Figure 1). Combination therapy reduced the risk of surgery (HR 0.58 [0.37-0.90]). Fistula closure was observed in 24% of patients after a median of 15 months (IQR, 7.5-27). Patients with a lower number of fistula tracts showed a higher probability of closure (OR 1.72 [1.09-2.7]). Conclusion A high proportion of patients with internal fistulizing CD benefit from biologic treatment after a median of 5 years. During this follow-up, around two thirds of patients are free of surgery and one in every four patients achieves fistula closure.

Kīlauea's Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō eruption was the longest lived (35+ years), and most voluminous (~4.4 km3) and intensely monitored historical eruption of this Hawaiian volcano. A synthesis and update are presented here on the remarkable petrologic and geochemical evolution of lava erupted from its inception on 03 Jan. 1983 to its demise on 01 May 2018. This time-series analysis chronicled mantle and crustal processes that varied during this eruption, which had more than a two-fold lava effusion rate increase. Our frequent sampling of Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō lava allowed the changes in crustal and mantle process during this single magmatic event to be assessed. New major element, trace element, and Sr isotope data are presented here for the period from 2010 to 2018. These results are combined with our previous geochemical studies to reveal the complex interplay of crustal processes that dominated the eruption's first 500 days. Subsequently, mantle geochemical signatures became discernible as the crustal-stored magma was flushed from the conduit system and replace by new mantle-derived magma. This flushing was possible because of the relatively small size of the summit magma reservoir system compared to the volume of magma erupted at Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō (≤0.2 vs. 4.4 km3). Parental magma compositions changed rapidly during the eruptionreflecting source heterogeneity in the mantle plume. The depth of melt segregation may have also changed during the eruption. These results demonstrate the importance of systematic temporal sampling during an active eruption.

Oceanic island basalts sample mantle reservoirs that are isotopically and compositionally heterogeneous. The Hawaiian–Emperor chain represents ∼85 Myr of volcanism supplied by a deep mantle plume. Two geographically and geochemically delineated trends, Kea and Loa, are well documented within the Hawaiian Islands. Enriched Loa compositions originate from subduction recycled or primordial material stored in deep mantle reservoirs such as the large low shear velocity province (LLSVP) below Hawai‘i. Loa compositions have not been observed along the Emperor Seamounts (>50 Ma), whereas lavas on the Hawaiian Islands (

Olivine in Hawaiian tholeiitic lavas have high NiO at given forsterite (Fo) contents (e.g., 0.25–0.60 wt% at Fo 88 ) compared to MORB (e.g., 0.10–0.28 wt% at Fo 88 ). This difference is commonly related to source variables such as depth and temperature of melting and/or lithology. Hawaiian olivine NiO contents are also highly variable and can range from 0.25–0.60 wt% at a given Fo. Here we examine the effects of crustal processes (fractional crystallization, magma mixing, diffusive re-equilibration) on the Ni content in olivine from Hawaiian basalts. Olivine compositions for five major Hawaiian volcanoes can be subdivided at ≥Fo 88 into high-Ni (0.25–0.60 wt% NiO; Ko‘olau, Mauna Loa, and Mauna Kea) and low-Ni (0.25–0.45 wt% NiO; Kīlauea and Lō‘ihi), groups that are unrelated to major isotopic trends (e.g., Loa and Kea). Within each group, individual volcanoes show up to 2.5× variation in olivine NiO contents at a given Fo. Whole-rock Ni contents from Ko‘olau, Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, and Kīlauea lavas overlap significantly and do not correlate with differences in olivine NiO contents. However, inter-volcano variations in parental melt polymerization (NBO/T) and nickel partition coefficients ( D Ni Ol / melt ) , caused by variable melt SiO 2 , correlate with observed differences in olivine NiO at Fo 90 , indicating that an olivine-free source lithology does not produce the inter-volcano groups. Additionally, large intra-volcano variations in olivine NiO can occur with minimal variation in lava SiO 2 and NBO/T. Minor variations in parental melt NiO contents (0.09–0.11 wt%) account for the observed range of NiO in ≥Fo 88 olivine. High-precision electron microprobe analyses of olivine from Kīlauea eruptions (1500–2010 C.E.) show that the primary controls on 88 olivine NiO contents are fractional crystallization, magma mixing, and diffusive re-equilibration. Core-rim transects of normally zoned olivine crystals reveal marked differences in Fo and NiO zoning patterns that cannot be related solely to fractional crystallization. These Fo-NiO profiles usually occur in olivine with 88 and are common in mixed magmas, although they are not restricted to lavas with obvious petrographic signs of mixing. Three-dimensional numerical diffusion models show that diffusive re-equilibration decouples the growth zoning signatures of faster diffusing Fe-Mg (Fo) from the somewhat slower Ni. This diffusive “decoupling” overprints the chemical relationships of Fe-Mg, Ni, and Mn inherited from crystal growth and influences the calculated fraction of pyroxenite-derived melt (Xpx). Sections of numerical olivine that have been affected by diffusive re-equilibration indicate that larger phenocrysts (800 μm along c -axis) are >50% more likely to preserve original Xpx compared to smaller phenocrysts (400 μm along c -axis) which rarely (6%) recover original Xpx. Sections that are parallel or sub-parallel to the c -axis and/or pass near the core of the crystal best preserve growth signatures. Thus, diffusive re-equilibration, crystal size, and sectioning effects can strongly influence the characterization of mantle source lithologies for Hawaiian volcanoes.

Oceanic island basalts are targeted for geochemical study because they provide a direct window into mantle composition and a wealth of information on the dynamics and timescales associated with Earth mixing. Previous studies mainly focused on the shield volcanic stage of oceanic islands and the more fusible, enriched mantle components that are easily distinguished in those basalts. Mantle depleted compositions are typically more difficult to resolve unless large amounts of this material participated in mantle melting (e.g., mid-ocean ridges), or unique processes allow for their compositions to be erupted undiluted, such as very small degrees of melting of a source with minimal fusible enriched components (e.g., rejuvenated basalts) or as xenoliths (e.g., abyssal peridotites). Mantle depleted components, defined here as material with low time-integrated Rb/Sr (low 87Sr/86Sr) and high time-integrated Sm/Nd and Lu/Hf ratios (high 143Nd/144Nd and 176Hf/177Hf) relative to primitive mantle, derive from a potentially very large volume reservoir (up to 80% of the mantle), and therefore need adequate characterization in order estimate the composition of the Earth and mantle-derived melts. This review focuses on mantle depleted compositions in oceanic island basalts using the Hawaiian-Emperor chain as a case study. The Hawaiian-Emperor chain is the ∼6000 km long geological record of the deeply sourced Hawaiian mantle plume, active for >81 Myr. Hawaiian volcanism evolves through four volcanic stages as a volcano traverses the Hawaiian plume: alkalic preshield, tholeiitic shield (80–90% volcano volume), alkalic postshield (∼1%), and silica undersaturated rejuvenated (70 Ma) was likely related to interaction with the Kula-Pacific-Izanagi mid-ocean ridge spreading system active near the Hawaiian plume in the Late Cretaceous. In contrast, the incompatible trace element ratios of NWHR rejuvenated basalts require a distinct source in the Hawaiian mantle plume that was imprinted by ancient (>1 Ga) partial melting, likely ancient recycled oceanic lithosphere. This review of the geochemistry of Hawaiian depleted components documents the need for the sampling of multiple distinctive depleted compositions, each preferentially melted during specific periods of Hawaiian plume activity. This suggests that the composition of depleted components can evolve during the lifetime of the mantle plume, as observed for enriched components in the Hawaiian mantle plume. Changes in the composition of depleted components are dominantly controlled by the upper mantle tectonic configurations at the time of eruption (i.e., proximity to a mid-ocean ridge), as this effect overwhelms the signal imparted by potentially sampling different lower mantle components through time.

Reliable estimates for lava accumulation rates are essential for interpreting magma fluxes to intraplate volcanoes and inferring the thermal and compositional structure of mantle plumes. Kīlauea Volcano’s (Hawai‘i) 1.7-km-deep SOH-1 scientific drill hole provides an opportunity to assess the lava accumulation rate and duration of the early shield stage for Hawaiian volcanoes. New 40 Ar/ 39 Ar ages were determined for four SOH-1 tholeiitic samples. Combining these results with two previous 40 Ar/ 39 Ar ages and the age of the drill-site surface flow, and correcting sample depth to remove intervening dikes, yields a good correlation (R 2 = 0.97) for a 4.4 m/k.y. accumulation rate, which may have increased to 5.9 m/k.y. during the last 50 k.y. These rates contrast with a predicted 40% decrease during the last 200 k.y. from a simple shield volcano growth model. Mauna Loa, a massive shield volcano that buttresses the north flank of Kīlauea, may have contributed to this nearly constant lava accumulation rate. Extending the correlation to the base of the SOH-1 core indicates that Kīlauea’s tholeiitic volcanism probably started by 240 ka. Assuming an ∼400 k.y. duration for the preshield stage, Kīlauea is much older than some previous estimates (ca. 600 ka versus 150–275 ka) and has been vigorously erupting tholeiitic lavas for at least the past 200 k.y. During this period, it has been competing with Mauna Loa for the higher-temperature output of the Hawaiian mantle plume, which is contrary to previous models. New models that assess the magmatic output and thermal history of the Hawaiian mantle plume need to consider a steep increase in magma supply during the transition from preshield to shield stages to explain the near-constant lava accumulation rate during early shield growth.

Marine surveying and submersible sampling of Ka‘ula Volcano, located 100 km off the axis of the Hawaiian chain, revealed widespread areas of young volcanism. New 40Ar/39Ar and geochemical analyses of the olivine-phyric submarine and subaerial volcanic rocks show that Ka‘ula is shrouded with 1.9–0.5 Ma alkalic basalts. The ages and chemistry of these rocks overlap with rejuvenated lavas on nearby, northern Hawaiian Island shields (Ni‘ihau, Kaua‘i and South Kaua‘i Swell). Collectively, these rejuvenated lavas cover a vast area (∼7000 km2), much more extensive than any other area of rejuvenated volcanism worldwide. Ka‘ula rejuvenated lavas range widely in alkalinity and incompatible element abundances (e.g., up to 10× P2O5 at a given MgO value) and ratios indicating variable degrees of melting of a heterogeneous source. Heavy REE elements in Ka‘ula lavas are pinned at a mantle normalized Yb value of 10 ± 1, reflecting the presence of garnet in the source. Trace element ratios indicate the source also contained phlogopite and an Fe–Ti oxide. The new Ka‘ula ages show that rejuvenated volcanism was nearly coeval from ∼0.3 to 0.6 Ma along a 450 km segment of the Hawaiian Islands (from West Maui to north of Ka‘ula). The ages and volumes for rejuvenated volcanism are inconsistent with all but one geodynamic melting model proposed to date. This model advocates a significant contribution of pyroxenite to rejuvenated magmas. Analyses of olivine phenocryst compositions suggest a major (33–69%) pyroxenite component in Ka‘ula rejuvenated lavas, which correlates positively with radiogenic Pb isotope ratios for Ka‘ula. This correlation is also observed in lavas from nearby South Kaua‘i lavas, as was reported for Atlantic oceanic islands. The presence of pyroxenite in the source may have extended the duration and volume of Hawaiian rejuvenated volcanism.

New bathymetric and gravity mapping, refined volume calculations and petrologic analyses show that the Hawaiian volcano Pūhāhonu is the largest and hottest shield volcano on Earth. This ∼12.5-14.1 Ma volcano in the northwest Hawaiian Ridge (NWHR) is twice the size of Mauna Loa volcano (148 ± 29 vs. 74.0 × 10 3 km 3 ), which was assumed to be not only the largest Hawaiian volcano but also the largest known shield volcano. We considered four testable mechanisms to increase magma production, including 1) thinner lithosphere, 2) slower propagation rate, 3) more fertile source, and 4) hotter mantle. The first three of these have been ruled out. The lithosphere was old (∼88 Myrs) when Pūhāhonu was formed, and thus, too thick and cold to allow for greater extents of partial melting. The propagation rate was relatively fast when it erupted (87 km/Myr), so this is another unlikely reason. Source fertility was Kea-like and no more fertile than for other much smaller NWHR volcanoes. A hotter mantle remains the best mechanism to produce the large magma volumes and is consistent with the high forsteritic olivine phenocryst compositions (up to 91.8%) and the calculated high percent of melting (24%). Thus, the gargantuan size of Pūhāhonu reflects its high melting temperature, the highest reported for any Cenozoic basalt. A solitary wave within the Hawaiian plume is the probable cause of Pūhāhonu's higher melting temperature and the resulting increased volume flux given the absence of a more fertile source for Pūhāhonu basalts, as found for many basalts from the Hawaiian Islands.

Olivine composition and zoning patterns are widely used to reconstruct the evolution of mafic magmas from source to surface and to extract time scales of magmatic processes. Deciphering the olivine zoning code is challenging because the contributions of growth and diffusion may overlap. A detailed multielement (Fe, Mg, P, Al, and Ni) examination of zoning in an exceptional olivine with skeletal morphology allows unequivocal discrimination between these two processes using simple but powerful geometrical arguments. Olivine crystals initially grow rapidly and diagonally from corner locations, whereas diffusion effectively tracks mutually perpendicular crystal lattice orientations. Generating the zoning patterns for our case-study olivine required at least 4–5 months of diffusive reequilibration of Fe-Mg, further demonstrating that crystal morphologies produced by rapid growth can survive at magmatic temperatures for extended periods. No significant major element zoning is preserved after rapid growth, lending further credibility to time scales retrieved via diffusion modeling. Extending multielement approaches to decoding olivine zoning patterns can help determine whether the kinetic relationship between growth- and diffusion-induced zoning recognized herein is widely applicable. Such studies will improve our understanding of time scales of magma storage, solidification, mixing, and/or transit toward the surface.

The South Kauai Swell (SKS) volcano was sampled during four JASON dives and three dredge hauls recovering rocks that range from fresh pillow lavas to altered volcanic breccias. Two geo- chemical groups were identified: shield-stage tholeiites (5� 4-3� 9 Ma) and rejuvenation-stage alkalic lavas (1� 9-0� 1 Ma). The young SKS ages and the coeval rejuvenated volcanism along a 400 km segment of the Hawaiian Islands (Maui to Niihau) are inconsistent with the timing and duration predictions by the flexure and secondary plume melting models for renewed volcanism. The SKS tholeiites are geochemically heterogeneous but similar to lavas from nearby Kauai, Niihau and Waianae volcanoes, indicating that their source regions within the Hawaiian mantle plume sampled a well-mixed zone. Most SKS tholeiitic lavas exhibit radiogenic Pb isotope ratios ( 208 Pb*/ 206 Pb*) that are characteristic of Loa compositions (>0� 9475), consistent with the volcano's location on the west side of the Hawaiian Islands. These results document the existence of the Loa component within the Hawaiian mantle plume prior to 5 Ma. Loa trend volcanoes are thought to have a major pyroxenite component in their source. Calculations of the pyroxenitic component in the parental melts for SKS tholeiites using high-precision olivine analyses and modeling of trace element ratios indicate a large pyroxenite proportion (� 50%), which was predicted by recent nu- merical models. Rejuvenation-stage lavas were also found to have a significant pyroxenite compo- nent based on olivine analyses (40-60%). The abundance of pyroxenite in the source for SKS lavas may be the cause of this volcano's extended period of magmatism (>5 Myr). The broad distribution of the Loa component in the northern Hawaiian Island lavas coincides with the start of a dramatic magma flux increase (300%) along the Hawaiian Chain, which may reflect a major structural change in the source of the Hawaiian mantle plume.

The summit magma storage reservoir of Kīlauea Volcano is one of the most important components of the magmatic plumbing system of this frequently active basaltic shield-building volcano. Here we use new high-precision Pb isotopic analyses of Kīlauea summit lavas—from 1959 to the active Halema‘uma‘u lava lake—to infer the number, size, and interconnectedness of magma bodies within the volcano's summit reservoir. From 1971 to 1982, the 206Pb/204Pb ratios of the lavas define two separate magma mixing trends that correlate with differences in vent location and/or pre-eruptive magma temperature. These relationships, which contrast with a single magma mixing trend for lavas from 1959 to 1968, indicate that Kīlauea summit eruptions since at least 1971 were supplied from two distinct magma bodies. The locations of these magma bodies are inferred to coincide with two major deformation centers identified by geodetic monitoring of the volcano's summit region: (1) the main locus of the summit reservoir ∼2–4 km below the southern rim of Kīlauea Caldera and (2) a shallower magma body 4 km3 of lava erupted), must therefore be sustained by a nearly continuous supply of new melt from the mantle. The model results show that a minimum of four compositionally distinct, mantle-derived magma batches were delivered to the volcano (at least three directly to the summit reservoir) since 1959. These melt inputs correlate with the initiation of energetic (1959 Kīlauea Iki) and/or sustained (1969–1974 Mauna Ulu, 1983-present Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō and 2008-present Halema‘uma‘u) eruptions. Thus, Kīlauea's eruptive behavior is partly tied to the delivery of new magma batches from the volcano's source region within the Hawaiian mantle plume.

The short duration (e.g., hours to days) of magmatic processes leading up to volcanic eruptions are challenging to characterize using conventional petrologic and geophysical methods. This is especially true for eruptions that occurred prior to the implementation of seismic and geodetic monitoring (mid-20th century). We present a new application of diffusion chronometry that utilizes lithium zoning in olivine phenocrysts to investigate the timing of late-stage, pre-eruptive magma mixing at Kīlauea Volcano (Hawai‘i). The diffusive re-equilibration of sub-ppm changes in lithium concentration are modeled in rapidly quenched, well-oriented olivine from six eruptions during a dominantly explosive period (1500–1820 CE). Lithium timescales reveal repeated intrusion of primitive composition magma into Kīlauea's shallow (∼2–6 km) reservoir system typically only a few days prior to each eruption. These timescales are shorter than the weeks to years retrieved from modeling Fe–Mg and Ni zoning in the same olivine crystals, which record earlier magma mixing events. The short Li timescales indicate that an intrusion primed the shallow magma reservoir potentially only hours to a few days before an eruption. Late-stage intrusions and mixing events should thus be investigated at other basaltic volcanoes to better understand pre-eruptive processes, so that eruption scenarios can be better constrained. The last 2500 years of activity at Kīlauea Volcano (Hawai‘i) have been characterized by centuries-long periods dominated by either effusive or explosive eruptions. The most recent period of explosive activity produced the Keanakāko‘i Tephra (KT; ca. 1500–1820 C.E.) and occurred after the collapse of the summit caldera (1470–1510 C.E.). Previous studies suggest that KT magmas may have ascended rapidly to the surface, bypassing storage in crustal reservoirs. The storage conditions and rapid ascent hypothesis are tested here using chemical zoning in olivine crystals and thermodynamic modeling. Forsterite contents (Fo; [Mg/(Mg + Fe) × 100]) of olivine core and rim populations are used to identify melt components in Kīlauea’s prehistoric (i.e., pre-1823) plumbing system. Primitive (≥Fo88) cores occur throughout the 300+ years of the KT period; they originated from mantle-derived magmas that were first mixed and stored in a deep crustal reservoir. Bimodal olivine populations (≥Fo88 and Fo83–84) record repeated mixing of primitive magmas and more differentiated reservoir components shallower in the system, producing a hybrid composition (Fo85–87). Phase equilibria modeling using MELTS shows that liquidus olivine is not stable at depths >17 km. Thus, calculated timescales likely record mixing and storage within the crust. Modeling of Fe–Mg and Ni zoning patterns (normal, reverse, complex) reveal that KT magmas were mixed and stored for a few weeks to several years before eruption, illustrating a more complex storage history than direct and rapid ascent from the mantle as previously inferred for KT magmas. Complexly zoned crystals also have smoothed compositional reversals in the outer 5–20 µm rims that are out of Fe–Mg equilibrium with surrounding glasses. Diffusion models suggest that these rims formed within a few hours to a few days, indicating that at least one additional, late-stage mixing event may have occurred shortly prior to eruption. Our study illustrates that the lifetimes of KT magmas are more complex than previously proposed, and that most KT magmas did not rise rapidly from the mantle without modification during shallow crustal storage.

The subaerial eruptive activity at Kīlauea Volcano (Hawai‘i) for the past 2500 yr can be divided into 3 dominantly effusive and 2 dominantly explosive periods, each lasting several centuries. The prevailing style of eruption for 60% of this time was explosive, manifested by repeated phreatic and phreatomagmatic activity in a deep summit caldera. During dominantly explosive periods, the magma supply rate to the shallow storage volume beneath the summit dropped to only a few percent of that during mainly effusive periods. The frequency and duration of explosive activity are contrary to the popular impression that Kīlauea is almost unceasingly effusive. Explosive activity apparently correlates with the presence of a caldera intersecting the water table. The decrease in magma supply rate may result in caldera collapse, because erupted or intruded magma is not replaced. Glasses with unusually high MgO, TiO 2 , and K 2 O compositions occur only in explosive tephra (and one related lava flow) and are consistent with disruption of the shallow reservoir complex during caldera formation. Kīlauea is a complex, modulated system in which melting rate, supply rate, conduit stability (in both mantle and crust), reservoir geometry, water table, and many other factors interact with one another. The hazards associated with explosive activity at Kīlauea’s summit would have major impact on local society if a future dominantly explosive period were to last several centuries. The association of lowered magma supply, caldera formation, and explosive activity might characterize other basaltic volcanoes, but has not been recognized.

[1] Geochemical time series analysis of lavas from Kīlauea's ongoing Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō eruption chronicle mantle and crustal processes during a single, prolonged (1983 to present) magmatic event, which has shown nearly two-fold variation in lava effusion rates. Here we present an update of our ongoing monitoring of the geochemical variations of Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō lavas for the entire eruption through 2010. Oxygen isotope measurements on Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō lavas show a remarkable range (δ^(18)O values of 4.6–5.6‰), which are interpreted to reflect moderate levels of oxygen isotope exchange with or crustal contamination by hydrothermally altered Kīlauea lavas, probably in the shallow reservoir under the Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō vent. This process has not measurably affected ratios of radiogenic isotope or incompatible trace elements, which are thought to vary due to mantle-derived changes in the composition of the parental magma delivered to the volcano. High-precision Pb and Sr isotopic measurements were performed on lavas erupted at ∼6 month intervals since 1983 to provide insights about melting dynamics and the compositional structure of the Hawaiian plume. The new results show systematic variations of Pb and Sr isotope ratios that continued the long-term compositional trend for Kīlauea until ∼1990. Afterward, Pb isotope ratios show two cycles with ∼10 year periods, whereas the Sr isotope ratios continued to increase until ∼2003 and then shifted toward slightly less radiogenic values. The short-term periodicity of Pb isotope ratios may reflect melt extraction from mantle with a fine-scale pattern of repeating source heterogeneities or strands, which are about 1–3 km in diameter. Over the last 30 years, Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō lavas show 15% and 25% of the known isotopic variation for Kīlauea and Mauna Kea, respectively. This observation illustrates that the dominant time scale of mantle-derived compositional variation for Hawaiian lavas is years to decades.

[1] The Hawaiian Islands are the most geologically studied hot-spot islands in the world yet surprisingly, the only large-scale compilation of marine and land gravity data is more than 45 years old. Early surveys served as reconnaissance studies only, and detailed analyses of the crustal-density structure have been limited. Here we present a new chain-wide gravity compilation that incorporates historical island surveys, recently published work on the islands of Hawai‘i, Kaua‘i, and Ni‘ihau, and >122,000 km of newly compiled marine gravity data. Positive residual gravity anomalies reflect dense intrusive bodies, allowing us to locate current and former volcanic centers, major rift zones, and a previously suggested volcano on Ka‘ena Ridge. By inverting the residual gravity data, we generate a 3-D view of the dense, intrusive complexes and olivine-rich cumulate cores within individual volcanoes and rift zones. We find that the Hāna and Ka‘ena ridges are underlain by particularly high-density intrusive material (>2.85 g/cm3) not observed beneath other Hawaiian rift zones. Contrary to previous estimates, volcanoes along the chain are shown to be composed of a small proportion of intrusive material (

[1] The South Kaua‘i Swell (SKS) is a 110 km x 80 km ovoid bathymetric feature that stands >2 km high and abuts the southern flank of the island of Kaua‘i. The origin of the SKS was investigated using multibeam bathymetry and acoustic backscatter, gravity data, radiometric ages, and geochemistry of rock samples. Most of the SKS rock samples are tholeiitic in composition with ages of 3.9–5.4 Ma indicating they were derived from shield volcanism. The ages and compositions of the SKS rocks partially overlap with those of the nearby Ni‘ihau, Kaua‘i and West Ka‘ena volcano complexes. The SKS was originally described as a landslide; however, this interpretation is problematic given the ovoid shape of SKS, its relatively smooth, flat-to-convex surface, and the lack of an obvious source region that could accommodate what would be one of Earth's most voluminous (6 x 103 km3) landslides. The morphology, size, and the surrounding gravity anomaly are more consistent with the SKS being a low-relief shield volcano, which was partially covered with a small volume of landside debris from south Kaua‘i and later with some secondary volcanic seamounts. A shield origin would imply that Hawaiian and possibly other hotspot shield volcanoes can take on a wider variety of forms than is commonly thought, ranging from tall island-building shields, to smaller edifices such as Ka‘ena Ridge and Mahukona, to even lower-relief volcanoes represented by the SKS and possibly the South West O‘ahu Volcanic Field.
