We present the results of the first series of successful two-way laser ranging experiments from a ground station, the Lunar Laser Ranging (LLR) station in Grasse, France, to a spacecraft at lunar distance, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO). A 15 × 18 × 5 cm, 650-g array of twelve 32-mm diameter solid corner cubes is mounted on its anti-nadir deck. Ranging to this small retro-reflector array onboard a lunar orbiter from a ground station was a challenge compared to ranging to larger lunar surface retro-reflectors. Grasse measured 67 returns in two 6-min sessions on September 4, 2018. Clear returns were also recorded during two additional sessions on August 23–24, 2019 for which active slewing by LRO was performed to bring the array in view of the station. Based on previous applications of laser altimetry to planetary geodesy at GSFC [Mazarico et al. (2014)], we use the recently developed PyXover software package to analyze altimetric crossovers from the Mercury Laser Altimeter (MLA) and improve geodetic parameters via least squares (LS) minimization of crossover discrepancies.We simultaneously solve for orbital corrections for each MESSENGER track, for the geodetic parameters of the IAU recommended orientation model for Mercury [Archinal et al, 2018], and for the Mercury Love number h2.We calibrate the formal errors of our solution based on closed-loop simulations and on the level of independence from \emph{a priori values and data selection. Data description: From March 2011 to April 2015, the MESSENGER spacecraft orbited Mercury in a highly elliptical, near-polar orbit with a periapsis of ~200-400 km, an apoapsis between ~1.5-2 x 10^4 km, and an orbital period of 12 hrs initially and reduced to 8 hrs after one year. The spacecraft was within ranging distance for the onboard MLA over 15-45 min periods near periapsis, typically at latitudes > 30 deg N. MLA collected over 22 million measurements of surface height with a vertical precision of ~1 m and an accuracy of ~10 m. The total MLA dataset contains ~3,200 tracks and ~3 million crossovers, i.e., instances where two ground-tracks intersect. Because of the elliptical orbit, the laser spot size on the surface varied between ~10 - 100 m, while the average distance between each crossover and its bracketing observations was ~200 m. These crossovers provide an opportunity to measure Mercury’s orientation and rotation (see Fig.1).Independent confirmation and refinement of the IAU libration model, developed from ground-based radar measurements [Margot et al. 2009], is important as it has implications for the moment of inertia of the outer solid shell and thus the mass distribution, internal structure, and thermal evolution of Mercury [Phillips et al. (2018), Genova et al. (2019)]. Processing and solution strategy: Each crossover is the intersection of two separate ground-tracks. It can be thought of as a differential measurement between two distinct observations of the same surface location at two different times. Any difference in height at the crossover point is mainly due to the following effects: (1) Errors in the spacecraft orbit and attitude, or MLA boresight orientation, (2) interpolation errors of the surface topography between MLA footprints, and (3) geophysical signal due, e.g., to mismodeled time-varying planetary rotation or to tidal vertical motions. We perform the analysis of MLA data with the PyXover python code, whose modular structure is sketched in Fig.2.Laser altimetry ranges are geolocated to the planetary surface and partial derivatives of the ground-tracks are computed with respect to the chosen parameters by finite differencing. Initial geolocation is based on the MESSENGER orbit navigation reconstruction by KinetX and on the values provided by the IAU for Mercury orientation [Archinal et al, 2018]. Values for the Love numbers h2 and l2 are set to 0 in our a priori tidal model.Horizontal coordinates of crossover points are recovered in local stereographic projection in a two-step process, to balance computational time.Expected elevations at intersection points are then interpolated from neighbouring points on each track. Their discrepancies w constitute the observation residuals to be minimized in the LS procedure.Huber weighting is then applied to the crossovers depending on the reliability of the orbital tracks involved, on the off-nadir angle of the spacecraft and on inter-point distances. Crossovers with abnormally large discrepancies are strongly down-weighted in our analysis. We minimize the total RMSE of crossover discrepancies within a penalised LS with weights determined by Variance Component Estimation (VCE). The resulting corrections to MESSENGER orbits and Mercury geodetic parameters are then applied to update the a priori for the subsequent iteration, until convergence is reached. Parametrization and error assessment:Formal errors provided by LS and VCE are notoriously under-estimated. We thus perform additional analysis to consider systematic error sources, such as the chosen apriori values and data selection. In particular, we measure the stability of the solutions resulting from different Doppler reconstructions of MESSENGER orbits (KinetX and [Genova et al, 2018]) and from both IAU [Archinal et al, 2018] and [Genova et al, 2019] values for Mercury rotational parameters. Also, we process multiple sub-samples of 500,000 crossovers (max 20% in common, stratified by latitude to conserve the overall geographical distribution) and we verify the dispersion of the solutions at convergence.Moreover, we conduct extensive simulations with time-of-flight ranges consistently generated from realistic topography to analyze the impact of the interpolation error and the reliability of the recovery in different scenarios and parametrizations. Processing of MLA crossovers: Finally, we perform a weighted LS solution of orbit corrections and geodetic parameters based on the presented processing setup.We base our solution on a set of 106 crossovers selected according to their computed weight (i.e., their quality) and to ensure a balanced geographical distribution. We iterate the solution until convergence is reached, i.e., parameters changes are well below formal errors ( We check the reduction of the RMSE of post-fit discrepancies w, as shown in Fig.3, the evolution of VCE derived weights and the consistency of topography maps to evaluate the improvements. Our results for some geodetic parameters are shown in Fig.4 and are consistent with previous solutions provided by other groups using various techniques (camera and altimetry, Doppler, Earth-based radar). Error bars are calibrated based on both closed-loop simulations and the analysis of systematic errors outlined in the previous section.We will discuss the recovered h2 and our determination of Mercury rotational parameters at the meeting. Images from the Mercury Dual Imaging System (MDIS) aboard the MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging mission reveal low-reflectance polar deposits that are interpreted to be lag deposits of organic-rich, volatile material. Interpretation of these highest-resolution images of Mercury’s polar deposits has been limited by the available topography models, so local high-resolution (125 m pixel−1) digital elevation models (DEMs) were made using a combination of data from the Mercury Laser Altimeter (MLA) and from shape-from-shading techniques using MDIS images. Local DEMs were made for eight of Mercury’s north polar craters; these DEMs were then used to create high-resolution simulated image, illumination, and thermal models. The simulated images reveal that the pixel brightness variations imaged within Mercury’s low-reflectance deposits are consistent with scattered light reflecting off of topography and do not need to be explained by volatile compositional differences as previously suggested. The illumination and thermal models show that these low-reflectance polar deposits extend beyond the permanently shadowed region, more than 1.0 km in some locations, and correspond to a maximum surface temperature of greater than 250 K but less than 350 K. The low-reflectance boundaries of all eight polar deposits studied here show a close correspondence with the surface stability boundary of coronene (C24H12). While coronene should only be viewed as a proxy for the myriad volatile compounds that may exist in Mercury’s polar deposits, coronene’s surface stability boundary supports the idea that Mercury’s low-reflectance polar deposits are composed of macromolecular organic compounds, consistent with the hypotheses of exogenous transport and in situ production.

We present a new illumination modeling tool, called IllumNG, developed at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). We describe its capabilities to enhance the analysis and calibration of science data collected by planetary missions. We highlight these with examples making use of lunar data, particularly the topographic and radiometric measurements collected by the Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter (LOLA) instrument, with applications to radiometric measurements from other LRO instruments as well. The unique features of IllumNG are its accuracy and flexibility to handle multiple types of observers and light sources, and its ability to accurately model both singly- and doubly-scattered radiation to an observer.

The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) has been orbiting the Moon since 2009, obtaining unique and foundational datasets important to understanding the evolution of the Moon and the Solar System. The high-resolution data acquired by LRO benefit from precise orbit determination (OD), limiting the need for geolocation and co-registration tasks. The initial position knowledge requirement (50 meters) was met with radio tracking from ground stations, after combination with LOLA altimetric crossovers. LRO-specific gravity field solutions were determined and allowed radio-only OD to perform at the level of 20 meters, although secular inclination changes required frequent updates. We describe the results of the Laser Ranging (LR) experiment carried out from June 2009 to September 2014 in order to make one-way time-of-flight measurements of laser pulses between Earth-based laser ranging stations and the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) orbiting the Moon. Over 4,000 hours of successful LR data are obtained from 10 international ground stations. The 20-30 centimeter precision of the full-rate LR data is further improved to 5-10 centimeter after conversion into normal points. The main purpose of LR is to utilize the high accuracy normal point data to improve the quality of the LRO orbits, which are nomi- nally determined by the radiometric S-band tracking data. When independently used in the LRO precision orbit determination process with the high-resolution GRAIL (Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory) gravity model, LR data provide good orbit solutions, with an average difference of approximately 50 meters in total position, and approximately 20 centimeters in radial direction, compared to the definitive LRO trajectory. When used in combination with the S-band tracking data, LR data help to improve the orbit accuracy in the radial direction to approximately 15 centimeters. In order to obtain highly accurate LR range measurements for precise orbit determination results, it is critical to closely model the behavior of the clocks both at the ground stations and on the spacecraft. LR provides a unique data set to calibrate the spacecraft clock. The LRO spacecraft clock is characterized by the LR data to a timing knowledge of 0.015 milliseconds over the entire 5 years of LR operation. We here present both the engineering setup of the LR experiments and the detailed analysis results of the LR data.

The Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter (LOLA) experiment on Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) is a laser altimeter that also measures the strength of the return pulse from the lunar surface. These data have been used to estimate the reflectance of the lunar surface, including regions lacking direct solar illumination. A new calibration of these data is presented that features lower uncertainties overall and more consistent results in the polar regions. We use these data, along with newly available maps of the distribution of lunar maria, also derived from LRO instrument data, to investigate a newly discovered dependence of the albedo of the lunar maria on latitude (Hemingway et al., [2015]). We confirm that there is an increase in albedo with latitude in the lunar maria, and confirm that this variation is not an artifact arising from the distribution of compositions within the lunar maria, using data from the Lunar Prospector Neutron Spectrometer. Radiative transfer modeling of the albedo dependence within the lunar maria is consistent with the very weak to absent dependence of albedo on latitude in the lunar highlands; the lower abundance of the iron source for space weathering products in the lunar highlands weakens the latitude dependence to the extent that it is only weakly detectable in current data. In addition, photometric models and normalization may take into account the fact that the lunar albedo is latitude dependent, but this dependence can cause errors in normalized reflectance of at most 2% for the majority of near-nadir geometries. We also investigate whether the latitude dependent albedo may have obscured detection of small mare deposits at high latitudes. We find that small regions at high latitudes with low roughness similar to the lunar maria are not mare deposits that may have been misclassified owing to high albedos imposed by the latitude dependence. Finally, we suggest that the only modest correlations among space weathering indicators defined for the lunar samples may be due to mixing of soils from distinct latitudes.

The Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter (LOLA) aboard the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) has collected nearly seven billion measurements of surface height on the Moon with an absolute accuracy of ∼1 m and a precision of ∼10 cm. Converting time-of-flight laser altimeter measurements to topographic elevations requires accurate knowledge of the laser pointing with respect to the spacecraft body–fixed coordinate system. To that end, we have utilized altimetric crossovers from LOLA, as well as bidirectional observations of the LOLA laser and receiver boresight via an Earth-based laser tracking ground station. Based on a sample of ∼780,000 globally distributed crossovers from the circular-orbit phase of LRO’s mission (∼27 months), we derive corrections to the LOLA laser boresight. These corrections improve the cross-track and along-track agreement of the crossovers by 24% and 33%, respectively, yielding RMS residuals of ∼10 m. Since early in the LRO mission, the bidirectional laser tracking experiments have confirmed a pointing anomaly when the LOLA instrument is facing toward deep space or the night side of the Moon and have allowed the reconstruction of the laser far-field pattern and receiver telescope pointing. By conducting such experiments shortly after launch and nearly eight years later, we have directly measured changes in the laser characteristics and obtained critical data to understand the laser behavior and refine the instrument pointing model. The methods and results presented here are also relevant to the design, fabrication, and operation of future planetary laser altimeters and their long-term behavior in the space environment.

In June 2009 the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft was launched to the Moon. The payload consists of 7 science instruments selected to characterize sites for future robotic and human missions. Among them, the Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter (LOLA) was designed to obtain altimetry, surface roughness, and reflectance measurements. The primary phase of lunar exploration lasted one year, following a 3-month commissioning phase. On completion of its exploration objectives, the LRO mission transitioned to a science mission. After 7 years in lunar orbit, the LOLA instrument continues to map the lunar surface. The LOLA dataset is one of the foundational datasets acquired by the various LRO instruments. LOLA provided a high-accuracy global geodetic reference frame to which past, present and future lunar observations can be referenced. It also obtained high-resolution and accurate global topography that were used to determine regions in permanent shadow at the lunar poles. LOLA further contributed to the study of polar volatiles through its unique measurement of surface brightness at zero phase, which revealed anomalies in several polar craters that may indicate the presence of water ice. In this paper, we describe the many LOLA accomplishments to date and its contribution to lunar and planetary science.

We present a deep, wide-field optical study of the M81 group dwarf galaxy Holmberg II (HoII) based on Subaru/Suprime-Cam imaging. Individual stars are resolved down to I~25.2, i.e. about 1.5 mag below the tip of the red giant branch (RGB). We use resolved star counts in the outskirts of the galaxy to measure the radial surface brightness profile down to \mu_V~32 mag arcsec^-2, from which we determine a projected exponential scalelength of 0.70'+-0.01' (i.e. 0.69+-0.01 kpc). The composite profile, ranging from the cored centre out to R=7', is best fit by an EFF profile which gives a half-light radius of 1.41'+-0.04' (i.e. 1.39+-0.04 kpc), and an absolute magnitude M_V=-16.3. The low surface-brightness stellar component of HoII is regular and symmetric and has an extent much smaller than the vast HI cloud in which it is embedded. We compare the spatial distribution of the young, intermediate age, and old stellar populations, and find that the old RGB stars are significantly more centrally concentrated than the young stellar populations, contrary to what is observed in most dwarf galaxies of the Local Universe. We discuss these properties in the context of the comet-like distribution of HI gas around HoII, and argue for the presence of a hot intragroup medium in the vicinity of HoII to explain the contrasting morphologies of the gas and stars.

We present a detailed analysis of two fields located 26 kpc (~5 scalelengths) from the centre of M31. One field samples the major axis populations--the Outer Disc field--while the other is offset by ~18' and samples the Warp in the stellar disc. The CMDs based on HST/ACS imaging reach old main-sequence turn-offs (~12.5 Gyr). We apply the CMD-fitting technique to the Warp field to reconstruct the star formation history (SFH). We find that after undergoing roughly constant SF until about 4.5 Gyr ago, there was a rapid decline in activity and then a ~1.5 Gyr lull, followed by a strong burst lasting 1.5 Gyr and responsible for 25% of the total stellar mass in this field. This burst appears to be accompanied by a decline in metallicity which could be a signature of the inflow of metal-poor gas. The onset of the burst (~3 Gyr ago) corresponds to the last close passage of M31 and M33 as predicted by detailed N-body modelling, and may have been triggered by this event. We reprocess the deep M33 outer disc field data of Barker et al. (2011) in order to compare consistently-derived SFHs. This reveals a similar duration burst that is exactly coeval with that seen in the M31 Warp field, lending further support to the interaction hypothesis. The complex SFHs and the smoothly-varying age-metallicity relations suggest that the stellar populations observed in the far outer discs of both galaxies have largely formed in situ rather than migrated from smaller galactocentric radii. The strong differential reddening affecting the CMD of the Outer Disc field prevents derivation of the SFH. Instead, we quantify this reddening and find that the fine-scale distribution of dust precisely follows that of the HI gas. This indicates that the outer HI disc of M31 contains a substantial amount of dust and therefore suggests significant metal enrichment in these parts, consistent with inferences from our CMD analysis.

Ground-based surveys have mapped the stellar outskirts of Local Group galaxies in unprecedented detail, but extending this work to other galaxies is necessary to overcome stochastic variations in evolutionary history and provide more stringent constraints on cosmological galaxy formation models. As part of our continuing program of ultra-deep imagery of galaxies beyond the Local Group, we present a wide-field analysis of the isolated late-type spiral NGC2403 using data obtained with Suprime-Cam on Subaru. The survey reaches a maximum projected radius of 30 kpc or deprojected radius of R_dp~60 kpc. The colour-magnitude diagram reaches 1.5 mag below the tip of the metal-poor red giant branch (RGB) at a completeness rate > 50% for R_dp >12 kpc. Using the combination of diffuse light photometry and resolved star counts, we are able to trace the radial surface brightness (SB) profile over a much larger range of radii and surface brightness than is possible with either technique alone. The exponential disc as traced by RGB stars dominates the SB profile out to >8 disc scale-lengths, or R_dp~18 kpc, and reaches a V-band SB of 29 mag per sq. arcsec. Beyond this radius, we find evidence for an extended structural component with a significantly flatter SB profile than the inner disc and which we trace to R_dp~40 kpc and ~32 mag per sq. arcsec. This component can be fit with a power-law index of ~3, has an axial ratio consistent with that of the inner disc and has a V-band luminosity of 1-7% that of the whole galaxy. At R_dp~20 - 30 kpc, we estimate a peak metallicity [M/H]= -1.0+/-0.3. Although the extant data are unable to discriminate between stellar halo or thick disc interpretations of this component, our results support the notion that faint, extended stellar structures are a common feature of all disc galaxies, even isolated, low-mass systems.

We present a detailed analysis of the star formation history (SFH) of three fields in M33 located ~ 4 - 6 visual scale lengths from its nucleus. These fields were imaged with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope and reach ~ 2.5 magnitudes below the red clump of core helium burning stars. The observed color-magnitude diagrams are modeled as linear combinations of individual synthetic populations with different ages and metallicities. To gain a better understanding of the systematic errors we have conducted the analysis with two different sets of stellar evolutionary tracks which we designate as Padova (Girardi et al. 2000) and Teramo (Pietrinferni et al. 2004). The precise details of the results depend on which tracks are used but we can make several conclusions that are fairly robust despite the differences. Both sets of tracks predict the mean age to increase and the mean metallicity to decrease with radius. Allowing age and metallicity to be free parameters and assuming star formation began ~ 14 Gyr ago, we find that the mean age of all stars and stellar remnants increases from ~ 6 Gyr to ~ 8 Gyr and the mean global metallicity decreases from ~ -0.7 to ~ -0.9. The fraction of stars formed by 4.5 Gyr ago increases from ~ 65% to ~ 80%. The mean star formation rate 80 - 800 Myr ago decreases from ~ 30% of the lifetime average to just ~ 5%. The random errors on these estimates are ~ 10%, 1.0 Gyr, and 0.1 dex. By comparing the results of the two sets of stellar tracks for the real data and for test populations with known SFH we have estimated the systematic errors to be 15%, 1.0 Gyr, and 0.2 dex. These do not include uncertainties in the bolometric corrections or variations in alpha-element abundance which deserve future study.

Studying the stellar populations in the outskirts of spiral galaxies can provide important constraints on their structure, formation, and evolution. To that end, we present VI photometry obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys for three fields located ~ 20' - 30' in projected distance southeast of M33's nucleus (corresponding to ~ 4 - 6 visual scale lengths or ~ 9 - 13 kpc in deprojected radius). The color-magnitude diagrams reveal a mixed stellar population whose youngest constituents have ages no greater than ~ 100 Myr and whose oldest members have ages of at least several Gyr. The presence of stars as massive as 3 - 5 Msun is consistent with global star formation thresholds in disk galaxies but could argue for a threshold in M33 that is on the low end of observational and theoretical expectations. The metallicity gradient as inferred by comparing the observed red giant branch (RGB) to the Galactic globular clusters is consistent with M33's inner disk gradient traced by several other studies. The surface density of RGB stars drops off exponentially with a radial scale length of 4.7' +/- 0.1'. The scale length increases with age in a manner similar to the vertical scale height of several nearby late-type spirals. Based on the metallicity gradient, density gradient, and mixed nature of the stellar populations, we conclude these fields are dominated by a disk population although we cannot rule out the presence of a small halo component.

We present deep CCD photometry in the VI passbands using the WIYN 3.5m telescope of a field located approximately 20' southeast of the center of M33; this field includes the region studied by Mould & Kristian in their 1986 paper. The color-magnitude diagram (CMD) extends to I~25 and shows a prominent red giant branch (RGB), along with significant numbers of asymptotic giant branch and young main sequence stars. The red clump of core helium burning stars is also discernable near the limit of our CMD. The I-band apparent magnitude of the red giant branch tip implies a distance modulus of (m-M)_I = 24.77 +/- 0.06, which combined with an adopted reddening of E(V-I)=0.06 +/- 0.02 yields an absolute modulus of (m-M)_0 = 24.69 +/- 0.07 (867 +/- 28 kpc) for M33. Over the range of deprojected radii covered by our field (~8.5 to ~12.5 kpc), we find a significant age gradient with an upper limit of ~1 Gyr (~0.25 Gyr/kpc). Comparison of the RGB photometry to empirical giant branch sequences for Galactic globulars allows us to use the dereddened color of these stars to construct a metallicity distribution function (MDF). The primary peak in the MDF is at a metallicity of [Fe/H] ~ -1.0 with a tail to lower abundances. The peak does show radial variation with a slope of d[Fe/H]/dR_{deproj} = -0.06 +/- 0.01 dex/kpc. This gradient is consistent with the variation seen in the inner disk regions of M33. We examine the reliability of the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) as a distance indicator for stellar populations with different star formation histories (SFHs) when photometric errors and completeness corrections at the TRGB are small. In general, the TRGB-distance method is insensitive to the shape of the SFH except when it produces a stellar population with a significant component undergoing the red giant branch phase transition. The I-band absolute magnitude of the TRGB for the middle and late stages of this transition (~1.3-1.7 Gyr) is several tenths of a magnitude fainter than the canonical value of M_I ~ -4.0. If more than 30% of all stars formed over the lifetime of the Universe are formed at these ages, then the distance could be overestimated by 10-25%. Similarly, the TRGB-distance method is insensitive to the metallicity distribution of stars formed except when the average metallicity is greater than = -0.3. If more than ~70% of all stars formed have [Fe/H] > -0.3, the distance could be overestimated by ~10-45%. The concentrations of the cuspy dark matter halos predicted by simulations of cold dark matter are related to the cosmology in which the halos form. Observational constraints on halo concentration therefore map into constraints on cosmological parameters. In order to explain the observed concentrations of dark matter dominated low surface brightness galaxies, we require a cosmology with rather little power on galaxy scales. Formally, we require s_8 G_0.6 < 0.23, where G_0.6 is a modified shape parameter appropriate to this problem. Practically, this means either Omega_m < 0.2 or s_8 < 0.8. These limits apply as long as we insist that the cuspy halos found in simulations must describe the halos of low surface brightness galaxies. A low density cosmology helps with the low observed concentrations, but it offers no explanation of the many cases where the shape of the density profile deviates from the predicted cuspy form. These cases must have suffered very extensive mass redistribution if the current halo formation picture is not to fail outright. While wide-field surveys of M31 have revealed much substructure at large radii, understanding the nature and origin of this material is not straightforward from morphology alone. Using deep HST/ACS data, we have derived further constraints in the form of quantitative star formation histories (SFHs) for 14 inner halo fields which sample diverse substructures. In agreement with our previous analysis of colour-magnitude diagram morphologies, we find the resultant behaviours can be broadly separated into two categories. The SFHs of 'disc-like' fields indicate that most of their mass has formed since z~1, with one quarter of the mass formed in the last 5 Gyr. The Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter instrument onboard the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft collected more than 5 billion measurements in the nominal 50 km orbit over ~10,000 orbits. The data precision, geodetic accuracy, and spatial distribution enable two-dimensional crossovers to be used to infer relative radial position corrections between tracks to better than ~1 m. We use nearly 500,000 altimetric crossovers to separate remaining high-frequency spacecraft trajectory errors from the periodic radial surface tidal deformation. The unusual sampling of the lunar body tide from polar lunar orbit limits the size of the typical differential signal expected at ground track intersections to ~10 cm. Nevertheless, we reliably detect the topographic tidal signal and estimate the associated Love number h[subscript 2] to be 0.0371 ± 0.0033, which is consistent with but lower than recent results from lunar laser ranging., United States. Valuable insights into galaxy evolution can be gleaned from studies of resolved stellar populations in the local Universe. Deep photometric surveys have provided tracers of the star-formation histories in galaxies from 0.8-16 Mpc, but without robust chemical abundances and stellar kinematics from spectroscopy, their sub-structures and assembly histories remain hidden from us. In this context, we introduce the EAGLE design study for a multi--integral-field-unit, near-infrared spectrograph for the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). EAGLE will exploit the unprecedented light-gathering power of the E-ELT to deliver AO-corrected spectroscopy across a large (38.5 sq. arcmin) field, truly revolutionising our view of stellar populations in the Local Volume., 6 pages, to appear in the proceedings of the AO4ELT conference, held in Paris, 22-26 June 2009

We present a wide field census of resolved stellar populations in the northern half of M81, conducted with Suprime-Cam on the 8-m Subaru telescope and covering an area ~ 0.3 square degrees. The resulting color-magnitude diagram reaches over one magnitude below the red giant branch (RGB) tip, allowing a detailed comparison between the young and old stellar spatial distributions. We present the discovery of four remote star clusters in M33, one of which is of an extended nature. Three of the clusters were discovered using survey data from the Isaac Newton Telescope Wide-Field Camera while one was discovered serendipitously in a deep image taken with the Hubble Space Telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys. With projected radii of 38-113 arcmin (9.6-28.5 kpc for an assumed M33 distance of 870 kpc), these clusters lie significantly beyond all but one of the currently-confirmed clusters in M33. The clusters have magnitudes and colors consistent with their being old to intermediate-age globular clusters. Indeed, they bear a strong resemblance to the outer halo GC population of the Milky Way and M31 in terms (V-I)o colors. The three outermost clusters are projected on the far side of M33 with respect to M31, an asymmetry that could suggest tidal interactions have affected M33's globular cluster distribution at large radii., Comment: 14 pages, 1 Table, 4 Figures. We have modelled the observed color-magnitude diagram (CMD) at one location in M33's outskirts under the framework of a simple chemical evolution scenario which adopts instantaneous and delayed recycling for the nucleosynthetic products of Type II and Ia supernovae. In this scenario, interstellar gas forms stars at a rate modulated by the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation and gas outflow occurs at a rate proportional to the star formation rate (SFR). With this approach, we put broad constraints on the role of gas flows during this region's evolution and compare its [alpha/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] relation with that of other Local Group systems. We find that models with gas inflow are significantly better than the closed box model at reproducing the observed distribution of stars in the CMD. The best models have a majority of gas inflow taking place in the last 7 Gyr, and relatively little in the last 3 Gyr. These models predict most stars in this region to have [alpha/Fe] ratios lower than the bulk of the Milky Way's halo. The predictions for the present-day SFR, gas mass, and oxygen abundance compare favorably to independent empirical estimates. We present integrated photometry and color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) for 24 star clusters in M33, of which 12 were previously uncataloged. These results are based on Advanced Camera for Surveys observations from the Hubble Space Telescope of two fields in M33. Our integrated V magnitudes and V-I colors for the previously identified objects are in good agreement with published photometry. We are able to estimate ages for 21 of these clusters using features in the CMDs, including isochrone fitting to the main sequence turnoffs for 17 of the clusters. Comparisons of these ages with the clusters' integrated colors and magnitudes suggest that simple stellar population models perform reasonably well in predicting these properties., 15 pages, 30 figures, accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal. We present observations of RR Lyrae variables in the Local Group late-type spiral galaxy M33. Using the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope, we have identified 64 ab-type RR Lyraes in M33. We have estimated reddenings for these stars based on their minimum light V-I colors and metallicities based on their periods. From the distributions of these properties, we conclude that the RR Lyraes belong to two populations - one associated with the halo of M33 and the other with its disk. Given that RR Lyraes are produced by populations older than ~10 Gyr, this suggests that not only does the field halo of M33 contain an old component, but so does its disk. This is one of the best pieces of evidence for the existence of a halo field component in M33. Using a relation between RR Lyrae absolute magnitude and metallicity (Mv(RR) = 0.23[Fe/H] + 0.93), we estimate a mean distance modulus of = 24.67 +/- 0.08 for M33. We use the radio-infrared (IR) flux correlation bet ween star-forming galaxies in the local universe to derive a simple analytical expression between the intensity of the IR background and the brightness t emperature of the radio background. This relation i s insensitive to the star formation history of the galaxies that produce the cosmic IR background (CIB). We use the observed CIB intensity to constrain t he cosmic star formation history, and the relation between the CIB and the cosmic radio background (CR B) to constrain the relative contribution of star-f orming galaxies to the CRB. Current limits on the C IB intensity predict a 178 MHz brightness temperature of ~18+-9 K, about half of the 37+-8 K inferred for an isotropic radio component. This suggests that s tar-forming galaxies and AGN contribute about equal ly to the CRB intensity at that frequency., Comment: Accepted for publication in the ApJ (14 pages + 3 embedded figures)

In locomotive activities, areas of cartilage in both the hip, and especially the knee, experience periods of complete unloading between loading cycles as contact is lost between opposing articulating surfaces. During these periods these cartilage sites experience load-free recovery. Therefore, it was decided to model as closely as possible the physiological situation described, in order to study the deformation response of articular cartilage to physiological cyclic loading. For this it was necessary to design an apparatus in order to overcome some of the difficulties experienced with servo-hydraulic materials testing apparatus when specifying a lower load limit of zero. Cyclic loading in the frequency range 0–2.5 Hz was controlled by a cam and follower assembly driven by a stepper motor. The ratio of loading to recovery duration per cycle could be adjusted using a two-plate cam design enabling cartilage loading to occur for a duration as short as 20 ms within a 1 Hz cycle. Interchangeable impervious, porous, hemispherical or plane-ended indenters could be used. Load amplitude was controlled by compression of a spring giving a wide range of contact stresses (0.04–7.0 MPa). Load rise times were controlled by the spring in conjunction with a dashpot, enabling critically damped loads to reach their maximum value within an interval as short as 15 ms. The measurement technique and subsequent analysis relied on simultaneous recording of indenter load and vertical displacement at a sampling frequency of 5 kHz.
