SummarySea-level rise threatens both human communities and vulnerable species within coastal areas. Joint spatial planning can allow conservation and social resiliency goals to work in synergy. We present a case study integrating distribution information of a threatened saltmarsh bird, the eastern black rail (Laterallus jamaicensis jamaicensis), with social information to facilitate such joint planning. We constructed a distribution model for the species within an urbanizing coastal region (New Jersey, USA) and integrated this with publicly available parcel and protected area data to summarize ownership patterns. We estimated that c. 0.3–2.8% (c. 260–2200 ha) of available saltmarsh is occupied by eastern black rail, most of which is publicly owned (79%). Privately owned saltmarsh was spread across nearly 5000 individual parcels, 10% of which contained areas with the highest likelihood of rail presence according to our model (top quartile of predicted occupancy probabilities). Compared with all privately owned saltmarsh, parcels with probable rail habitat were larger (median: 5 versus 2 ha), contained more marsh (87% versus 59%) and were less economically valuable (US$11 200 versus US$36 100). Our approach of integrating species distributions with landownership data helps clarify trade-offs and synergies in species conservation and coastal resiliency planning.

Environmental DNA (eDNA) analyses have become invaluable for detecting and monitoring aquatic and terrestrial species and assessing site biodiversity within aquatic environments or soil. Recent studies have extended these techniques by using eDNA to identify the presence of aboveground terrestrial arthropods directly from vegetative surfaces. However, while the dynamics of eDNA state, transport, and fate (its “ecology”) have been explored within aquatic environments and soil, they have yet to be explored within aboveground terrestrial systems. Here, we explore the ecology of terrestrial eDNA deposited by fluid‐feeding arthropods on leaf surfaces. We carried out a series of experiments to evaluate the optimal filter pore size for intracellular eDNA collection, how eDNA is affected by rain events, and its degradation rate under different solar radiation conditions. We found that the captured concentration of intracellular eDNA was not significantly affected by an increase in filter pore size, suggesting a wide range of viable pore size options exist for targeting intracellular eDNA. We also found extracellular eDNA from fluid excrement degrades more rapidly than intracellular when exposed to solar radiation, indicating the latter is a more viable target for collection. Finally, we identified that rainfall or mist will remove most terrestrial eDNA present on vegetation surfaces. We provide researchers and environmental managers key insights into successfully designing and carrying out aboveground terrestrial arthropod eDNA surveys that maximize detection probability.

Recent methodological advances permit surveys for terrestrial insects from the direct collection of environmental DNA (eDNA) deposited on vegetation or other surfaces. However, in contrast to well‐studied aquatic applications, little is known about how detection rates for such terrestrial eDNA‐based surveys compare with conventional survey methods. Lycorma delicatula, the spotted lanternfly, is an emerging invasive insect in eastern North America, and a significant ecological and economic pest of forested and agricultural systems, especially grapes. During fall 2019, we conducted two rounds of paired eDNA and visual surveys for spotted lanternflies within 48 plots at 12 vineyards in New Jersey, USA. We compared detection probabilities within a multimethod occupancy modeling framework and used the results to extrapolate and inform survey design. The probability of detecting spotted lanternflies given presence in a plot was over two times higher for eDNA (84%) versus visual surveys (36%). In mid‐September, lanternfly eDNA was detected at five plots in three vineyards, while visual surveys revealed only a single individual in one plot. In early October, after dispersal of lanternflies into vineyards, lanternfly eDNA was detected in 12 plots within six vineyards compared with visual detections in six plots in two vineyards. Extrapolations based on detection and local‐scale occupancy rates indicate that only five and 12 plots would have been needed to positively detect lanternfly presence with 95% confidence using eDNA in contrast to 14 and 29 plots with visual surveys alone, respective to survey rounds. Log‐linear models revealed that visual counts of lanternflies were positively related to eDNA concentrations (R2 = 71%). We provide some of the first quantitative evidence to support the enhanced sensitivity of terrestrial eDNA approaches compared with conventional methods. Such methods can augment efforts to combat invasive species through improved ability to delimit invasion fronts, identify satellite populations, and confirm local eradications.

Reptiles are increasingly of conservation concern due to their susceptibility to habitat loss, emerging disease, and harvest in the wildlife trade. However, reptile populations are often difficult to monitor given the frequency of crypsis in their life history. This difficulty has left uncertain the conservation status of many species and the efficacy of conservation actions unknown. Environmental DNA (eDNA) surveys consistently elevate the detection rate of species they are designed to monitor, and while their use is promising for terrestrial reptile conservation, successes in developing such surveys have been sparse. We tested the degree to which inclusion of surface and soil eDNA sampling into conventional artificial-cover methods elevates the detection probability of a small, cryptic terrestrial lizard, Scincella lateralis. The eDNA sampling of cover object surfaces with paint rollers elevated per sample detection probabilities for this species 4-16 times compared with visual surveys alone. We readily detected S. lateralis eDNA under cover objects up to 2 weeks after the last visual detection, and at some cover objects where no S. lateralis were visually observed in prior months. With sufficient sampling intensity, eDNA testing of soil under cover objects produced comparable per sample detection probabilities as roller surface methods. Our results suggest that combining eDNA and cover object methods can considerably increase the detection power of reptile monitoring programs, allowing more accurate estimates of population size, detection of temporal and spatial changes in habitat use, and tracking success of restoration efforts. Further research into the deposition and decay rates of reptile eDNA under cover objects, as well as tailored protocols for different species and habitats, is needed to bring the technique into widespread use.El interés por la conservación de los reptiles es cada vez mayor debido a su susceptibilidad ante la pérdida del hábitat, enfermedades emergentes y la captura para el mercado de fauna. Environmental DNA (eDNA) approaches to monitoring biodiversity in terrestrial environments have largely focused on sampling water bodies, potentially limiting the geographic and taxonomic scope of eDNA investigations. We assessed the performance of two strictly terrestrial eDNA sampling approaches to detect arboreal mammals, a guild with many threatened and poorly studied taxa worldwide, within two central New Jersey (USA) woodlands. We compared detection rates between two eDNA collection methods (tree bark vs. soil sampling), and two detection methods (qPCR vs. metabarcoding). Our survey, which included 94 sampling events at 21 trees, detected 16 species of mammals, representing over 60% of the diversity expected in the area. More DNA was found for the 8 arboreal vs. 8 non-arboreal species detected (mean: 2466 vs. 289 reads / sample). Tree bark sampling showed 1.8-3.0x higher detection probability than soil sampling among the 5 most common species (overall effect size: β = 1.39, 95% CI: [0.85, 1.91]). Comparing detection methods for big brown bat revealed 3.4x higher detection rates for qPCR over metabarcoding, illustrating the enhanced sensitivity of single-species approaches. Our results suggest that sampling eDNA from trees could serve as a useful new monitoring tool for cryptic arboreal mammal communities globally.

Skin color patterns are ubiquitous in nature, impact social behavior, predator avoidance, and protection from ultraviolet irradiation. A leading model system for vertebrate skin patterning is the zebrafish; its alternating blue stripes and yellow interstripes depend on light-reflecting cells called iridophores. It was suggested that the zebrafish’s color pattern arises from a single type of iridophore migrating differentially to stripes and interstripes. However, here we find that iridophores do not migrate between stripes and interstripes but instead differentiate and proliferate in-place, based on their micro-environment. RNA-sequencing analysis further reveals that stripe and interstripe iridophores have different transcriptomic states, while cryogenic-scanning-electron-microscopy and micro-X-ray diffraction identify different crystal-arrays architectures, indicating that stripe and interstripe iridophores are different cell types. Based on these results, we present an alternative model of skin patterning in zebrafish in which distinct iridophore crystallotypes containing specialized, physiologically responsive, organelles arise in stripe and interstripe by in-situ differentiation., The skin of zebrafish is patterned by alternating blue stripes and yellow interstripes which arises from guanine crystal-containing cells called iridophores that reflect light. Here the authors track iridophores and see that they do not migrate between stripes and interstripes, but instead differentiate and proliferate in place based on their micro-environment.

Many early career researchers (ECRs) have the capacity and drive to contribute to climate adaptation and mitigation solutions. Strategic investments in training and support, especially in broad-based efforts that span traditional disciplinary boundaries, can help ECRs meet this potential and become emerging leaders equipped to address pressing climate-related challenges throughout their careers. In 2018, the inaugural USDA Northeast Climate Hub’s Graduate Climate Adaptation Partners (GradCAP) Program was launched to provide professional development opportunities and a platform for collaboration to graduate students studying climate resilience in agriculture, forestry, and aquaculture. This essay represents the unified voice of this consortium of emerging leaders. Here we offer perspectives, experiences, and recommendations for building capacity among ECRs, specifically with regard to interdisciplinary research, long-term research, and community engagement. We discuss these three tenants, which we term Convergence, Continuity, and Community, as essential elements in the development of successful leaders prepared for the complex challenges ahead. We encourage institutions, particularly universities and government agencies, to commit resources and pursue structural changes to provide support for mentorship and training that span these focal areas. As a result, more ECRs will have the capacity to engage in meaningful solution-oriented research and make lasting societal contributions toward the sustainable production of food and other natural resources in a changing climate.

However, if aboveground terrestrial eDNA surveys are to be widely adopted, it is necessary to first understand how terrestrial conditions affect the state, transport, and ultimate fate (or ‘ecology’) of terrestrially deposited eDNA. Many of the processes that affect the state, transport, and fate of eDNA in aquatic environments may not be applicable in aboveground systems, warranting an exploration of the terrestrial processes that likely do affect eDNA. Here we explore the ecology of aboveground terrestrial eDNA through a series of experiments evaluating the optimal filter pore size for intracellular eDNA collection, how eDNA is affected by rain events, and its degradation rate under different solar radiation conditions. We found that the captured concentration of intracellular eDNA was not significantly affected by an increase in filter pore size, suggesting there is a wide range of viable pore size options for targeting intracellular eDNA. We also found extracellular eDNA degrades more rapidly than intracellular forms when exposed to solar radiation, indicating the latter is a more viable target for collection. 1. Efforts to monitor and conserve populations and ecosystems in human-dominated landscapes can benefit from an empirical social–ecological systems approach., 2. Here we illustrate how latent variable structural equation modelling of regional time series data can effectively describe interconnected drivers of population fluctuations in dynamic landscapes and can help to reveal previously unknown system drivers., 3. Using a declining farmland-dependent bird species (Ammodramus savannarum) in the eastern United States (1994–2015) as a case study, our analysis reveals how farm management decisions drive population fluctuations (R2 = 20%), while management is in turn highly influenced by climate (R2 = 23%–51%), but not by regional conservation spending., 4. Synthesis and applications. Structural equation modelling revealed potential social–ecological pathways for halting regional population declines in a grassland bird, the Grasshopper Sparrow. Lower population growth rates followed years of higher hay yields (~4 percentage points per metric ton increase in hay yield) and later harvests (~2 percentage points per 10-day delay in harvest). Thus, one pathway for stabilising regional populations could involve compensating farmers for reducing hay harvests, potentially requiring a six-fold increase in current annual agri-environmental conservation spending.

Cryptic colouration in crustaceans, important for both camouflage and visual communication, is achieved through physiological and morphological mechanisms that are sensitive to changes in environmental conditions. Consequently, ocean warming and ocean acidification can affect crustaceans’ biophotonic appearance and exoskeleton composition in ways that might disrupt colouration and transparency. In the present study, we measured growth, mineralization, transparency, and spectral reflectance (colouration) of the caridean grass shrimp Hippolyte californiensis in response to pH and temperature stressors. Shrimp were exposed to ambient pH and temperature (pH 8.0, 17 °C), decreased pH (pH 7.5, 17 °C), and decreased pH/increased temperature (pH 7.5, 19 °C) conditions for 7 weeks. There were no differences in either Mg or Ca content in the exoskeleton across treatments nor in the transparency and spectral reflectance. There was a small but significant increase in percent growth in the carapace length of shrimp exposed to decreased pH/increased temperature. Overall, these findings suggest that growth, calcification, and colour of H. californiensis are unaffected by decreases of 0.5 pH units. This tolerance might stem from adaptation to the highly variable pH environment that these grass shrimp inhabit, highlighting the multifarious responses to ocean acidification, within the Crustacea.

Significance A foundational question in biology is how phenotypically similar traits arise. Here we identify two distinct white pigment cell populations, leucophores, that arise from independent progenitors in zebrafish and its relatives. Remarkably, one of these leucophore populations develops from previously differentiated, black melanophores. These different leucophores exhibited distinct pigment chemistries, cytological features, gene expression profiles, and genetic requirements, and whole-animal experiments implicated these cells in behavioral interactions. Our several approaches provide insights into pigment cell complements and origins in zebrafish and contribute to our understanding of form and function in the spectacular pigment patterns of teleost fishes., Understanding genetic and cellular bases of adult form remains a fundamental goal at the intersection of developmental and evolutionary biology. The skin pigment cells of vertebrates, derived from embryonic neural crest, are a useful system for elucidating mechanisms of fate specification, pattern formation, and how particular phenotypes impact organismal behavior and ecology. In a survey of Danio fishes, including the zebrafish Danio rerio, we identified two populations of white pigment cells—leucophores—one of which arises by transdifferentiation of adult melanophores and another of which develops from a yellow–orange xanthophore or xanthophore-like progenitor. Single-cell transcriptomic, mutational, chemical, and ultrastructural analyses of zebrafish leucophores revealed cell-type–specific chemical compositions, organelle configurations, and genetic requirements. At the organismal level, we identified distinct physiological responses of leucophores during environmental background matching, and we showed that leucophore complement influences behavior. Together, our studies reveal independently arisen pigment cell types and mechanisms of fate acquisition in zebrafish and illustrate how concerted analyses across hierarchical levels can provide insights into phenotypes and their evolution.

Agricultural grasslands such as hayfields and pastures frequently act as ecological traps for grassland birds because of harvest practices that interfere with successful nesting. Conservation measures that improve reproductive success while allowing farmers to maintain agricultural outputs are needed to help stem widespread grassland bird population declines. We evaluated leaving uncut patches ("refugia") within harvested hayfields to provide cover, reduce field abandonment, and promote renesting by three grassland species: Bobolink (Dolichonyx oryzivorus), Grasshopper Sparrow (Ammodramus savannarum), and Eastern Meadowlark (Sturnella magna). In 2014-2016, we left five refugia (0.25 ha each) within a 23-ha hayfield in New Jersey, USA. We found refugia were used more relative to cut areas by Bobolink and Grasshopper Sparrow, but not by Eastern Meadowlark. The presence of refugia also appears to have reduced field abandonment following harvest in all three years for Bobolink and Grasshopper Sparrow when compared to two adjacent fields that lacked refugia. We observed territorial singing, but no evidence of renesting in refugia following harvest, though this may relate to the relatively late harvest dates (26 Jun-3 Aug). Response patterns were consistent over the three years of the study and suggest that leaving small refugia within active hayfields could be a valuable supplement to current management incentive approaches.

Structural colors arising from interactions of light with submicron scale periodic structures have been found in many species across all taxa, serving multiple biological functions including sexual signaling, camouflage, and aposema- tism. Directly inspired by the extensive use of self-assembled melanosomes to produce colors in avian feathers, we set out to synthesize and assemble poly- dopamine-based synthetic melanin nanoparticles in an effort to fabricate colored films. We have quantitatively demonstrated that synthetic melanin nanoparticles have a high refractive index and broad absorption spanning across the UVvisible range, similar to natural melanins. Utilizing a thin-film interference model, we demonstrated the coloration mechanism of deposited films and showed that the unique optical properties of synthetic melanin nanoparticles provide advantages for structural colors over other polymeric nanoparticles (i.e., polystyrene colloidal particles).

Liquid foams are two-phase systems in which a large volume of gas is dispersed as bubbles in a continuous liquid phase. These foams are ubiquitous in nature. In addition, they are found in industrial applications, such as pharmaceutical formulation, food processing, wastewater treatment, construction, and cosmetics. Recently, we reported a new type of foam material, capillary foam, which is stabilized by the synergistic action of particles and a small amount of an immiscible secondary liquid. In this study, we explore in more detail the foam preparation routes. To illustrate some of the potential applications, we create vividly colored wet and dried foams, which are difficult to prepare using traditional methods, and load-bearing porous solids. The combined action of particles and immiscible secondary fluid confers exceptional stability to capillary foams and many options for functionalization, suggesting a wide range of possible applications.

Colour produced by wavelength-dependent light scattering is a key component of visual communication in nature and acts particularly strongly in visual signalling by structurally-coloured animals during courtship. Two miniature peacock spiders (Maratus robinsoni and M. chrysomelas) court females using tiny structured scales (~ 40 × 10 μm2) that reflect the full visual spectrum. Using TEM and optical modelling, we show that the spiders’ scales have 2D nanogratings on microscale 3D convex surfaces with at least twice the resolving power of a conventional 2D diffraction grating of the same period. Whereas the long optical path lengths required for light-dispersive components to resolve individual wavelengths constrain current spectrometers to bulky sizes, our nano-3D printed prototypes demonstrate that the design principle of the peacock spiders’ scales could inspire novel, miniature light-dispersive components., Several animals and plants get their often spectacular colouration and iridescence from structural colouration. Here, Hsiung et al. show the 3-dimensional nanostructures that produce the rainbow colours on the abdomen of miniature peacock spiders.

The rapid expansion of wind power development in recent years has accentuated the need to develop standard guidelines for identifying, assessing, and monitoring potential impacts to birds and bats. Although postconstruction mortality estimates generally take into account well-established sources of bias, including searcher efficiency and scavenging loss, methods for addressing these biases can be improved. Currently used bias-adjustment methods differ across studies, do not explicitly account for factors that may affect initial bias estimates, and often use averaged or assumed levels of bias. We examined scavenging and detection trial data from a 3-y study at a small, terrestrial wind-farm in coastal New Jersey. Logistic regression models indicated that carcass size, substrate, and observer all affected carcass detection rates, with larger carcasses more likely to be detected than smaller carcasses, and those located on bare ground or grass more likely to be detected than those on gravel. Known-fate mark–recapture models indicated that scavenging rates were highest within the first 3 d of placement, with some variation among seasons. We suggest that empirically based estimates of factors affecting observer detection and scavenging loss be generated for individual wind-farm mortality studies, because they likely vary across sites and could heavily bias resulting adjustment factors and mortality estimates.

Snow algae and green algae living in aeroterrestrial habitats are ideal objects to study adaptation to high light irradiation. Here, we used a detailed description of the spectral properties as a proxy for photo-acclimation/protection in snow algae (Chlamydomonas nivalis, Chlainomonas sp. and Chloromonas sp.) and charophyte green algae (Zygnema sp., Zygogonium ericetorum and Klebsormidium crenulatum). The hyperspectral microscopic mapping and imaging technique allowed us to acquire total absorption spectra of these microalgae in the waveband of 400-900nm. Particularly in Chlamydomonas nivalis and Chlainomonas sp., a high absorbance between 400-550nm was observed, due to naturally occurring secondary carotenoids; in Chloromonas sp. and in the charopyhte algae this high absorbance was missing, the latter being close relatives to land plants. To investigate if cellular water loss has an influence on the spectral properties, the cells were plasmolysed in sorbitol or desiccated at ambient air. While in snow algae, these treatments did hardly change the spectral properties, in the charopyhte algae the condensation of the cytoplasm and plastids increased the absorbance in the lower waveband of 400-500nm. These changes might be ecologically relevant and photoprotective, as aeroterrestrial algae are naturally exposed to occasional water limitation, leading to desiccation, which are conditions usually occurring together with higher irradiation.

We monitored Common Nighthawk (Chordeiles minor) nests in a managed grassland in the New Jersey Pine Barrens in 2009 and 2010, and assessed habitat selection by comparing vegetation characteristics at nests with random locations. We found relatively high nest survival with an estimated 79% chance of survival through incubation (daily survival rate = 0.987, n = 16 nests); predation was the most common cause of failure (n = 2). Movements of young (up to 45 m from the original nest site) were frequent, which introduced uncertainty that prevented us from estimating survival through fledging. Nest sites had significantly more open ground cover (e.g., sand, lichen) than random sites, as well as less shrub and grass cover, shallower litter, and lower mean vegetation height.

Streamers of hanging plant debris (nest tails) are commonly used for nest concealment by tropical Tyrannid flycatchers. Of the 35 species of Tyrannid flycatchers that regularly occur in temperate North America, only the Acadian flycatcher (Empidonax virescens) retains use of nest tails. To better understand the prevalence and possible function of nest tails in temperate breeding Acadian flycatchers, we investigated 145 nests in two habitat types (deciduous and hemlock (Tsuga Canadensis) dominated) in southwestern Pennsylvania in 2006–2007. The primary constituent of nest tails was catkins of oak (Quercus sp.) and American beech (Fagus grandifolia) along with other plant debris entangled in arthropod silk. Debris availability was generally sparse but appeared more common on nest as opposed to randomly selected branches. We assessed the density and productivity of Parkesia motacilla (Louisiana Waterthrush) at 4 Tsuga canadensis (Eastern Hemlock)-dominated headwater streams representing 2 distinct stream morphologies: ravines, defined by steep banks and fast-flowing water; and benches, characterized by braided streams meandering across a flat floodplain. The Louisiana Waterthrush is an established bioindicator of headwater-stream ecological integrity used to investigate overall habitat quality. We conducted the study from 2010 to 2013 in the Appalachian Highlands of northeastern Pennsylvania. Pair density and number of fledglings produced per km of study stream were exceptionally high at the 2 bench sites compared with the literature, and were significantly higher than in ravine sites, in part due to significantly higher nest survival on benches (69%) compared to ravines (33%). Double brooding was also significantly higher on benches. Differences in density, productivity, and nest survivorship between ravines and benches in our limited study suggest that benches may be of higher quality for this species. Our results have conservation and management implications regarding threatened Eastern Hemlock ecosystems, and the topic warrants further investigation.

Invasive insects pose a significant threat to biodiversity, often affecting entire communities through the destruction of foundation species. Eastern Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis [L.] Carr.) forests, which are unique habitats in eastern North America, are threatened by an introduced insect, the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (Adelges tsugae Annand). Previous studies have found declines in the abundance of some forest bird species, including the Acadian Flycatcher (Empidonax virescens), with increasing infestation by Hemlock Woolly Adelgids. Brittlestars (Echinoderms) are a large group of marine invertebrates, from which many species are able to produce bioluminescence. The light is used for ecological functions associated with defense. Hence, the larger and more intense the bioluminescent display the more effective it would be. Here, we report on our study to determine whether ossicles, making the arms of brittlestars, play a role in increasing the luminous display. We compared ossicles from three brittlestar species, two luminous and one not, and found no striking difference between the ossicles, in terms of structure, or calcium and magnesium content.

Objective: Low plasma concentrations of high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol and apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I) are independent predictors of coronary artery disease and are often associated with obesity and the metabolic syndrome. However, the underlying kinetic determinants of HDL metabolism are not well understood. Research Methods and Procedures: We pooled data from 13 stable isotope studies to investigate the kinetic determinants of apoA-I concentrations in lean and overweight– obese individuals. We also examined the associations of HDL kinetics with age, sex, BMI, fasting plasma glucose, fasting insulin, Homeostasis Model Assessment score, and concentrations of apoA-I, triglycerides, HDL-cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol. Results: Compared with lean individuals, overweight– obese individuals had significantly higher HDL apoA-I fractional catabolic rate (0.21 0.01 vs. 0.33 0.01 pools/d; p 0.001) and production rate (PR; 11.3 4.4 vs. 15.8 2.77 mg/kg per day; p 0.001). In the lean group, HDL apoA-I PR was significantly associated with apoA-I concentration (r 0.455, p 0.004), whereas in the overweight–obese group, both HDL apoA-I fractional catabolic rate (r 0.396, p 0.050) and HDL apoA-I PR (r 0.399, p 0.048) were significantly associated with apoA-I concentration. After adjustment for fasting insulin or Homeostasis Model Assessment score, HDL apoA-I PR was an independent predictor of apoA-I concentration. Discussion: In overweight–obese subjects, hypercatabolism of apoA-I is paralleled by an increased production of apoA-I, with HDL apoA-I PR being the stronger determinant of apoA-I concentration. This could have therapeutic implications for the management of dyslipidemia in individuals with low plasma HDL-cholesterol.

The anticipated effects of CO2-induced ocean acidification on marine calcifiers are generally negative and include dissolution of calcified elements and reduced calcification rates. Such negative effects are not typical of crustaceans for which comparatively little ocean acidification research has been conducted. Crustaceans, however, depend on their calcified exoskeleton for many critical functions. Here, we conducted a short-term study on a common caridean shrimp, Lysmata californica, to determine the effect of CO2-driven reduction in seawater pH on exoskeleton growth, structure and mineralization and animal cryptic coloration. Shrimp exposed to ambient (7.99 ± 0.04) and reduced pH (7.53 ± 0.06) for 21 days showed no differences in exoskeleton growth (percent increase in carapace length), but the calcium weight percent of their cuticle increased significantly in reduced pH conditions, resulting in a greater Ca:Mg ratio. Cuticle thickness did not change, indicating an increase in the mineral to matrix ratio, which may have mechanical consequences for exoskeleton function. Furthermore, there was a 5-fold decrease in animal transparency, but no change in overall shrimp coloration (red). These results suggest that even short-term exposure to CO2-induced pH reduction can significantly affect exoskeleton mineralization and shrimp biophotonics, with potential impacts on crypsis, physical defense and predator avoidance.

Grasslands associated with airfields in the northeastern United States (both military and civilian) often support large numbers of regionally rare grassland birds. As grassland habitat area in the region continues to decline, the role that large airfields play in maintaining populations of these species is likely to increase. Despite this, relatively little is known regarding reproductive success in these habitats, and whether they act as population sources or sinks. This is a particular concern because vegetation management on airfields often involves regular mowing during the summer breeding season, a practice presumed to be harmful to nesting success. To obtain a general picture of grassland bird reproductive success on regional airfields, and to examine possible factors that may be affecting it (including mowing), we conducted a nest monitoring study in 2009 on three military airfields in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast: Westover Air Reserve Base (Massachusetts), Lakehurst Naval Air Engineering Station (New Jersey), and Patuxent River Naval Air Station (Maryland). Nests of two target species (grasshopper sparrow (Ammodramus savannarum) and eastern meadowlark (Sturnella magna) and of other grassland-obligate species were located and monitored at regular intervals until success (fledging) or failure. We measured vegetation characteristics around each nest, and through direct observation and cooperation with mowing crews were able to determine: 1) if a nest was located in a regularly mowed area, 2) if a nest was directly mowed over while active, and 3) the condition of each nest immediately following a mow. We calculated daily nest survival rates (DSR), and examined the effects of various predictor variables using logistic modeling in program MARK. We also modeled the mean number of fledglings produced per nest using Generalized Linear Models (GLM).

Background To compare the kinetic determinants of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I) concentration in lean normolipidaemic subjects using radioisotope and stable isotope studies. Materials and methods We pooled data from 16 radioisotope and 13 stable isotope studies to investigate the kinetics of apoA-I in lean normolipidemic individuals. We also examined the associations of HDL kinetic parameters with age, sex, body mass index (BMI) and concentrations of apoA-I, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. Results Lean subjects from radioisotope and stable isotope studies were matched for age, gender, BMI and lipid profile. The apoA-I concentration was significantly lower in the radioisotope group than the stable isotope group (P = 0·031). There was no significant difference in HDL apoA-I fractional catabolic rate (FCR) and production rate (PR) between the groups. In the chronically cannulated cow, the hepatic extraction ratio for intravenous boluses of morphine, diamorphine, fentanyl, methadone and buprenorphine increased towards a plateau value as portal vein drug concentration increased. An extraction ratio close to zero for morphine was observed at a portal vein plasma drug concentration of about 200 nanomol per litre, which is within the range for significant pharmacodynamic effects. The similar concentrations extrapolated for the other narcotics would be of less pharmacodynamic importance. The phenomenon did not depend with morphine on the history of drug delivery to the liver; measurement of hepatic blood flow showed the effect was not an artifact of unrepresentative blood sampling, and was not related to any action of the narcotics on hepatic blood flow. The existence of this novel type of concentration dependent hepatic extraction ratio in vivo can explain a number of anomalous observations on narcotic pharmacokinetics, especially for morphine. Furthermore, similar behaviour may be expected for non-opioid drugs having similar pharmacokinetic properties.

The effects of an extradural narcotic, diamorphine, and of an extradural local anesthetic, bupivacaine, on postoperative responses of plasma glucose and cortisol levels following surgery were investigated in 20 fit women undergoing major gynecologic operations. The operations were conducted with morphine premedication and extradural local anesthetic with nitrous oxide, oxygen, and halothane. After surgery the patients were given either further extradural local anesthetic or 5 mg of extradural diamorphine. After surgery plasma glucose and plasma cortisol concentrations decreased in patients given extradural diamorphine, but increased in those given extradural local anesthetic. The differences between the groups were statistically highly significant (p less than 0.05) for both glucose and cortisol. The effects on metabolic responses to surgery produced by a small (5 mg) dose of diamorphine injected into the extradural space suggest a local action of the narcotic at the level of the spinal cord. Only very large intravenous doses of narcotics have previously been shown to suppress these responses.
