Desde o advento da exposição Global Conceptualisms: points of origin 1950s-1980s’, realizada no Museu de Queens, Nova York, em 1999, o termo “conceitualismo” firmou-se como o principal meio para descrever “práticas artísticas globais” de 1950 até à presente data. O termo foi se consolidando e, em grande medida ultrapassou as intenções originais da exposição para tornar-se uma forma derivativa da arte conceitual norte-americana. Tenho como hipótese de que essa relação histórica com arte conceitual é metodologicamente problemática, já que ela foi um movimento amplamente descrito como tendo surgido a partir da rejeição do formalismo greenbergiano e sua crença na especificidade dos meios. Nesse sentido, é uma denominação que é cultural, geopolítica e historicamente situada. Minha palestra terá por objetivo discutir outras terminologias possíveis para essas práticas diversas, enfatizando genealogias em que propostas de caráter conceitual surgiram sem reação direta com essa genealogia específica com a arte conceitual canônica.

Chapter section in book following symposium at Freie University Berlin, 2013. About the book: Based on the papers presented at an international conference at the Freie Universitat Berlin in 2013, the publication focuses on problems and challenges of art history’s epistemic frameworks. Following four guiding themes – narrations, venues, concepts and practice – the contributions address the aspect of mobility of aesthetic objects and their contextualisation from different analytical perspectives. The essays examine complex processes of transcultural negotiations that are set in motion by »travelling« objects, artists, ideas and institutions in order to trace and analyse historical conditions that generated specific frameworks with their respective art historical narratives and artistic production.

Since the late nineteenth century the conceptual and disciplinary frames of reference imposed upon non-European art have undergone a continual process of negotiation, transfiguration, and contestation. Indeed, artists, art critics, and art historians all over the world have challenged the categories of art that were created in European metropolises for the academic disciplines of art history and anthropology. Focusing on the themes of narrative, concept, and practice, this volume brings together fourteen essays that trace the complexities of this process during the twentieth and twentyfirst centuries. These essays explore how epistemic paradigms as well as “travelling” objects, cultural agents, and institutions set a number of transcultural negotiations into motion. By examining key cultural identities and concepts, including perceptions of the avant-garde and modernity as well as concomitant notions of authenticity and originality, they analyse the dynamics that make up artistic production and discourses on art.

In this paper art historian Michael Asbury relates the question of new publics for art with the production and dissemination of art itself. Within this context, he traces how the expectation that Brazilian art possesses an inevitable hybrid characteristic leads to a problematic and implicit ambivalence towards its relation to canonical genealogies. Equating this ambivalent character of hybridity with the notions of contamination andquarantine he traces how the critical discourse that accompanies the art from that region has shifted from one that stresses its identitarian strategies to one of distinction from the canon. For the ‘Western’ gaze therefore it seems that the notion of hybridity acts less as a form of productive relation and more as an signifier of authenticity. Such a manufactured sense of authenticity is then problematically expected to relate to new publics for art. Asbury suggests that instead it should be through the engagement in the production, or self representation, that new publics for art may emerge., Neste artigo, o historiador da arte Michael Asbury relaciona a questão dos novos públicos com a produção e difusão da arte em si. Dentro dessa perspectiva, ele discute como a expectativa de que a arte brasileira inevitavelmente possua uma característica híbrida leva a uma problemática e implícita ambivalência no que se refere à sua relação com as genealogias canônicas. Equiparando este caráter ambivalente do hibridismo a noções de contaminação e de quarentena, ele analisa como o discurso crítico que acompanha a arte dessa região modificou-se: de um discurso que assinalava suas estratégias identitárias para outro de distinção do cânone. Para o olhar "ocidental", portanto, parece que a noção de hibridismo age menos como uma forma de relação produtiva e mais como um significante de autenticidade. Espera-se, problematicamente, que este sentido fabricado de autenticidade conecte-se com os novos públicos para a arte. Asbury sugere, ao contrário, que será por meio do engajamento na produção, ou na auto-representação, que novos públicos para a arte deverão surgir.

This article explores some contradictions that arise from the recent prominence of Brazilian contemporary art within the international art circuit. One can note on the one hand a denial of any specificity relating to notions of national identity, while on the other this new globalised condition is defended by the incorporation of theories emerging from the struggles against cultural derivation from European modernism. The contradiction pertains to the fact that such theories were themselves elaborated on the assertion of cultural specificity. The article concludes that instead of using the presence of contemporary Brazilian art within the international circuit of art fairs, biennials, European and North American museum collections as a gauge for its recognition and pertinence within the new global order, a more productive means of assessing its standing within the international context would be to analyse the state of consolidation of collections and art historical narratives within the national context.

This essay investigates a work by the artist Daniel Senise entitled "2892", which at first appears to be atypical within the oeuvre. It traces the production of compositional characteristics as well as the repetition of themes and figures within other more overtly painterly works produced at the moment of conception of "2892" arguing that there is a contextual coherence within the group as a whole. Whilst almost two decades separate the conception of "2892" and its first public showing, the essay then speculates on some interesting co-relations that exist between the site in which it was shown and the trajectory that the other painterly work concurrently took.

Este ensaio investiga e especula sobre alguns contextos possíveis da instalação "2892" de Daniel Senise. Ele investiga a relação entre "2892" e certas pinturas do artista através de uma breve historiografia de sua trajetória, e especula sobre aspectos ontológicos ao qual conceitos oriundos de "2892" podem se referir. Ele termina por discutir "2892" como um possível início da preocupação do artista com a arquitetura e sua simbologia.

Nesta tese se encontra uma pesquisa sobre o humor na arte contemporânea, abordando-o em três aspectos: no tema do excremento recorrente desde Piero Manzoni, que pode ser verificado nos trabalhos de Paul McCarthy, Win Delvoye, Andres Serrano, Paulo Nazareth, etc, que nos aproximam dos conceitos de grotesco e de cinismo, fazendo uma crítica à ideia de civilização; nas obras de artistas latino-americanos que se debruçam sobre as questões políticas e de poder estabelecidas desde o período colonial até os dias de hoje, em trabalhos de Nadín Ospina, Luis Camnitzer, Héctor Zamora, Javier Téllez etc, que buscam estratégias para enfraquecer poderes autoritários e opressivos; e nos trabalhos das artistas que se identificam com uma identidade feminista, como Judy Chicago, as Guerrillas Girls, Melanie Bonajo, entre outras, tentando se inserir na história da arte, com suas particularidades que envolvem também seus humores. Faz parte também deste trabalho, a apresentação da história de Elinor, uma boneca de pano que viveu alguns dias do mês de novembro de 2016, com os estudantes secundaristas acampados em suas escolas em protesto contra as mudanças na educação propostas pelo governo de Michel Temer, presidente do Brasil, desde o golpe que retirou Dilma Rousseff de seu cargo. O amargo humor da arte contemporânea não tenta definir tipos de humores, mas sim, observar as contradições que o conformam, tentando entender sobre a arte e o nosso tempo. The research on humor in contemporary art led me to divide the artists selected a for this study in three groups, according to the theme of their work: those who present the subject of excrement, recurrent since Piero Manzoni and which can be found in the works of Paul McCarthy, Win Delvoye, Andres Serrano, Paulo Nazareth, etc.; artists who identify themselves with the feminist cause, such as Judy Chicago, the Guerrillas Girls, Melanie Bonajo, etc.; and the Latin Americans who are concerned with political and power issues, such as Nadín Ospina, Luis Camnitzer, Héctor Zamora, Javier Téllez, among others. This work also presents the history of Elinor, a cloth doll who, in November 2016, lived for a few days together with high-school students that occupied their schools in protest against the changes in education imposed by the government of Michel Temer, the new president of Brazil after the coup that removed former president Dilma Rousseff. The bitter humor of contemporary art does not try to define the types of humor, but to observe the contradictions that shape them, trying to understand art and our time.
