Loss of genetic variability is an increasing challenge in tree breeding programs due to the repeated use of a reduced number of founder genotypes. However, in almond, little is known about the genetic variability in current breeding stocks, although several cases of inbreeding depression have been reported. To gain insights into the genetic structure in modern breeding programs worldwide, marker-verified pedigree data of 220 almond cultivars and breeding selections were analyzed. Inbreeding coefficients, pairwise relatedness, and genetic contribution were calculated for these genotypes. The results reveal two mainstream breeding lines based on three cultivars: "Tuono", "Cristomorto", and "Nonpareil". Descendants from "Tuono" or "Cristomorto" number 76 (sharing 34 descendants), while "Nonpareil" has 71 descendants. The mean inbreeding coefficient of the analyzed genotypes was 0.041, with 14 genotypes presenting a high inbreeding coefficient, over 0.250. Breeding programs from France, the USA, and Spain showed inbreeding coefficients of 0.075, 0.070, and 0.037, respectively. According to their genetic contribution, modern cultivars from Israel, France, the USA, Spain, and Australia trace back to a maximum of six main founding genotypes. Among the group of 65 genotypes carrying the Sf allele for self-compatibility, the mean relatedness coefficient was 0.125, with "Tuono" as the main founding genotype (24.7% of total genetic contribution). The results broaden our understanding about the tendencies followed in almond breeding over the last 50 years and will have a large impact into breeding decision-making process worldwide. Increasing current genetic variability is required in almond breeding programs to assure genetic gain and continuing breeding progress.

Almond breeding is increasingly focusing on kernel quality. However, unlike other agronomic traits, the genetic basis of physical and chemical kernel quality traits has been poorly investigated. To address this gap, we conducted a QTL mapping of these traits to enhance our understanding of their genetic control. We phenotyped fruit samples from an F1 population derived from the cross between 'Marcona' and 'Marinada' for up to four years, using conventional and image analysis methods. Additionally, the 91 individuals of the population were genotyped with the almond Axiom™ 60K SNP array, and high-density linkage maps were constructed. These analyses identified several genomic regions of breeding interest. For example, two regions on chromosome one were found to contain QTLs for kernel shape and dimension, while another region at the end of the same chromosome contained QTLs for kernel fatty acid composition. Notably, QTLs for kernel symmetry and kernel shoulder, reported for the first time in this study, were also mapped on chromosome one. These QTLs will serve as a foundation for developing molecular markers linked to kernel physical and chemical quality traits in almonds, facilitating the integration of marker-assisted selection into breeding programs. Daily transpiration (Td) is crucial for both irrigation water management and increasing crop water productivity. The use of the remote-sensing-based two-source energy balance model (TSEB) has proven to be robust in estimating plant transpiration and evaporation separately for various crops. However, remote sensing models provide instantaneous estimations, and so daily upscaling approaches are needed to estimate daily fluxes. Daily upscaling methodologies have not yet been examined to upscale solely transpiration in woody crops. In this regard, this study aims to evaluate the proper image acquisition time throughout the day and four methodologies used to retrieve Td in almond trees with different production systems and water statuses. Hourly transpiration (Th) was estimated using the TSEB contextual approach (Th –TSEB) with high-resolution imagery five times during two diurnal courses. The tested methodologies were the following: the simulated evaporative fraction variable (EFsim), irradiance (Rs), reference evapotranspiration (ETo), and potential evapotranspiration (ETp). These approaches were first evaluated with in situ sap flow (T –SF) data and were then applied to the Th –TSEB. Daily T –SF showed significant differences among production systems and levels of water stress. The EFsim and ETp methods correlated better with measured T –SF and reduced the underestimation observed using the Rs and ETo methods, especially at noon in the severely water-stressed trees. However, the daily upscaling approaches applied in the TSEB (Td –TSEB) failed to detect differences between production systems. The lack of sensibility of Th –TSEB among production systems poses a challenge when estimating Td in canopies with discontinuous architectural structures. The use of ETp as a reference variable could address this issue as it incorporates various aerodynamic and radiative properties associated with different canopy architectures that influence the daily Th –SF pattern. Almond cultivation has a long-standing tradition on the island of Majorca, traditionally practiced under rainfed conditions. Currently, new plantations are established with irrigation; however, due to present conditions and the impacts of climate change, water availability is limited. The Government of the Balearic Islands permits a maximum water supply of 3000 m3 ha−1 per year for almond cultivation. In this study, a 6-year field trial was conducted to investigate the adaptation of fourteen almond cultivars obtained from different research centers under deficit irrigation practices in the soil and climatic conditions of Majorca Island. The cultivars had a significant effect on trunk cross-sectional area TCSA, cumulative almond in-shell yield, cumulative kernel yield, yield efficiency, and shelling percentage. The 'Marta' and 'Tarraco' cultivars exhibited the highest TCSA values. Regarding cumulative almond in-shell yield, 'Glorieta' and 'Constantí' produced the highest yields, whereas the lowest yields were observed in 'Mardía' and 'Tarraco'. In terms of shelling percentage, 'Ferragnès' exhibited the highest value. Kernel quality parameters were cultivar-specific. Additionally, oleic acid content was strongly negatively correlated with linoleic acid content. All cultivars exhibited an unsaturated fatty acid content exceeding 90%, with 'Masbovera' showing the highest value. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses a new hybrid rootstock called 'Intensia' that has been developed by the Institut de Recerca i Tecnologia Agroalimentàries (IRTA). Red leaf blotch (RLB) of almond, caused by the ascomycete Polystigma amygdalinum , is a severe foliar disease endemic in the Mediterranean Basin and Middle East. Airborne ascospores of P. amygdalinum were monitored from 2019 to 2021 in two almond orchards in Lleida, Spain, and a Bayesian beta regression was used to model its seasonal dynamics. The selected model incorporated accumulated degree-days (ADD), ADD considering both vapor pressure deficit and rainfall as fixed effects, and a random effect for the year and location. The performance of the model was evaluated in 2022 to optimize RLB fungicide programs by comparing the use of model predictions and action thresholds with the standard program. Two variants were additionally considered in each program to set the frequency between applications, based on (i) a fixed frequency of 21 days or (ii) specific meteorological criteria (spraying within 7 days after rainfalls greater than 10 mm, with daily mean temperatures between 10 and 20°C, and with a minimum frequency of 21 days between applications). Programs were evaluated in terms of RLB incidence and number of applications. The program based on the model with periodic fungicide applications was similarly effective as the standard program, resulting only in a 2.6% higher RLB incidence but with fewer applications (three to four, compared with seven in the standard program). When setting the frequency between applications by using the meteorological criteria, a higher reduction in the number of applications (two to three) was observed, while RLB incidence increased by roughly 16% in both programs. Therefore, the model developed in this study may represent a valuable tool toward a more sustainable fungicide schedule for the control of almond RLB in northeast Spain., Competing Interests: The author(s) declare no conflict of interest.

Twenty-five almond cultivars were assessed for susceptibility to Diaporthe amygdali , causal agent of twig canker and shoot blight disease. In laboratory experiments, growing twigs were inoculated with four D. amygdali isolates. Moreover, growing shoots of almond cultivars grafted onto INRA 'GF-677' rootstock were used in 4-year field inoculations with one D. amygdali isolate. In both types of experiments, inoculum consisted of agar plugs with mycelium, which were inserted underneath the bark, and the lesion lengths caused by the fungus were measured. Necrotic lesions were observed in the inoculated almond cultivars in both laboratory and field tests, confirming the susceptibility of all evaluated cultivars to all inoculated isolates of D. amygdali . Cultivars were grouped as susceptible or very susceptible according to a cluster analysis. The relationship between some agronomic traits and cultivar susceptibility was also investigated. Blooming and ripening times were found to be relevant variables explaining cultivar performance related to D. amygdali susceptibility. Late and very late blooming and early and medium ripening cultivars were highly susceptible to D. amygdali . Our results may provide valuable information that could assist in ongoing breeding programs of this crop and in the selection of cultivars for new almond plantations.
