In recent years, offshore wind farms have frequently encountered engineering geological disasters such as seabed liquefaction and scouring. Consequently, in situ monitoring has become essential for the safe siting, construction, and operation of these installations. Current technologies are hampered by limitations in single-parameter monitoring and insufficient probe-penetration depth, hindering comprehensive multi-parameter dynamic monitoring of seabed sediments. To address these challenges, we propose a foldable multi-sensor probe and establish an underwater adaptive continuous penetration system capable of concurrently measuring seabed elevation changes and sediment pore water pressure profiles. The reliability of the equipment design is confirmed through static analysis of the frame structure and sealed cabin. Furthermore, laboratory tests validate the stability and accuracy of the electrical and mechanical sensor measurements. Preliminary tests conducted in a harbor environment demonstrate the system’s effectiveness.

In this study, a diagnostic model for evaporation ducts was established based on the Coupled Ocean–Atmosphere–Wave–Sediment Transport (COAWST) and the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) models. Utilizing this model, four sensitivity tests were conducted over the South China Sea from 21 September to 5 October 2008, when four tropical cyclones affected the study domain. These tests were designed with different roughness schemes to investigate the impact mechanisms of wave processes on evaporation duct simulation under extreme weather conditions. The results indicated that wave processes primarily influenced the evaporation duct heights by altering sea surface roughness and dynamical factors. The indirect impacts of waves without dynamical factors were rather weak. Generally, a decrease in local roughness led to increased wind speed, decreased humidity, and a reduced air–sea temperature difference, resulting in the formation of evaporation ducts at higher altitudes. However, this affecting mechanism between roughness and evaporation ducts was also greatly influenced by changes in regional circulation. In the eastern open sea areas of the South China Sea, changes in evaporative ducts were more closely aligned with local impact mechanisms, whereas the changes in the central and western areas demonstrated greater complexity and fewer local impacts due to variations in regional circulation.

Monopile foundations are extensively utilized in the rapidly expanding offshore wind power industry, and the stability of these foundations has become a crucial factor for ensuring the safety of offshore wind power projects. Such foundations are subjected to a myriad of complex environmental loads during their operational lifespan. Whilst current research predominantly concentrates on the effects of wind, wave, and current loads on monopile stability in extreme environments, it is imperative to consider the potential influence of unexpected submarine landslide loads. In this study, we provide a comprehensive overview of wind, wave, current, and submarine landslide loads on monopile foundations in extreme environments. Subsequently, we establish a finite element model for analyzing the stability of monopiles under complex lateral loads, and validate the accuracy of the model by comparing it with the previous numerical findings. A case study is performed with reference to the Xiangshui Wind Farm project to analyze the effects of varying submarine landslide densities, velocities, impact heights, and seabed sediment strengths on pile head horizontal displacement, pile rotation at the mudline, and maximum bending moment. The findings indicate that the increase in submarine landslide density, velocity, and impact height leads to an increase in horizontal displacement at the pile head, pile rotation at the mudline, and maximum bending moments, and a horizontal failure mode is observed in seabed sediments. Furthermore, under the same load conditions, a decrease in seabed sediment strength and internal friction angle triggers instability in monopiles, with a noteworthy transition from horizontal failure to deep-seated seabed sediment failure. Finally, we propose a criterion for monopile instability under diverse loading conditions.

Standard penetration test (SPT) has been widely used in offshore exploration because of its unique advantages. Unlike onshore exploration, offshore construction areas are characterized by high waves and water depths ranging from several meters to tens of meters. As a result, the reliability of offshore SPT is significantly reduced compared with onshore SPT. Currently, the probe rod length correction of SPT is not involved in geotechnical engineering investigation codes and related research, which greatly limits the application of this method in offshore exploration. Therefore, a series of SPTs were carried out in offshore environments with different water depths, with a maximum rod length of 65 m. The acceleration and axial stress at each test point of the rod were monitored by the dynamic signal data acquisition system, and the hammer impacting energy at each test point was obtained by Force–Velocity (F-V) method. The test results show that the correction of the rod length of the offshore SPT is different from that of the traditional SPT, and it needs to be further corrected for the water depth. In this paper, a modified method of rod length for offshore SPT is proposed, which can provide reference for the application of offshore SPT.

The analytical method for slope stability analysis requires a collapse mechanism in advance. The collapse mechanism for a multi-staged slope is generally assumed to be overall failure, whereas this kind of slope may suffer from local failure. However, a local failure is rarely reported in the previous research for multi-staged slopes, which may result in an overestimate for slope stability. To this end, local failure is incorporated into the collapse mechanism for the first time, so as to develop a complete approach to assess the stability of multi-stage slopes. The modified pseudo-dynamic method is conducted to properly account for seismic effects. Thanks to the limit analysis method and strength reduction technique, the safety factor of a multi-stage slope is obtained. The result obtained by the presented approach shows a good agreement with that of previous literature and numerical calculations. The collapse mechanism of multi-stage slopes is studied, and the safety factor is presented schematically for a wide range of parameters. The results show that the local failure for a multi-stage slope often manifests under the intense seismic effects.

To better understand the shallow sea geological information and avoid the risk caused by potential geo-disasters, the efficient offshore geological exploration methods are required. Better detection resolution can be obtained by using a spark source. As the foundation, the observation system plays an important role for geological detection. The influence of the variation of the parameters of the observation system on the detection accuracy is analysed theoretically. Then, the numerical simulations based on the finite difference method was applied, and imaging characteristics of observation system with different parameter were studied. For submarine acoustic exploration, the spark source with frequency over 200 Hz can obtain the clear reflections for geological interpretation; besides, the receiver array with the interval of 5 m–10 m helps to obtain better wave signals when the buried depth of a geological body is less than 300 m, and the width is more than 10 m. Based on numerical simulations, the observation system was optimized and designed. The results of numerical examples show that the accurate position information of the structure can be obtained by using the observation system proposed in this paper. Different imaging performances are obtained by adjusting the parameters of the observation system. On this basis, combined with directivity analysis, the optimal observation system parameters are proposed. Finally, the proposed observation system is used to image the fault model. The research results of this paper can provide reference for the observation system design in similar projects.

Submarine landslides have attracted widespread attention, with the continuous development of ocean engineering. Due to the recent developments of in-situ investigation and modelling techniques of submarine landslides, significant improvements were achieved in the evolution studies on submarine landslides. The general characteristics of typical submarine landslides in the world are analyzed. Based on this, three stages of submarine landslide disaster evolution are proposed, namely, the submarine slope instability evolution stage, the large deformation landslide movement stage, and the stage of submarine landslide deposition. Given these three stages, the evolution process of submarine landslide disaster is revealed from the perspectives of in-situ investigation techniques, physical simulation, and numerical simulation methods, respectively. For long-term investigation of submarine landslides, an in-situ monitoring system with long-term service and multi-parameter collaborative observation deserves to be developed. The mechanism of submarine landslide evolution and the early warning factors need to be further studied by physical modelling experiments. The whole process of the numerical simulation of submarine landslides, from seabed instability to large deformation sliding to the impact on marine structures, and economizing the computational costs of models by advanced techniques such as parallel processing and GPU-accelerators, are the key development directions in numerical simulation. The current research deficiencies and future development directions in the subject of submarine landslides are proposed to provide a useful reference for the prediction and early warning of submarine landslide disasters.
