We develop a procedure for re-summing the large logarithms induced in gravity by loops of inflationary scalars. We first show how the scalar can be integrated out of the field equations in the presence of constant graviton field. We then extend this result to a fully conserved form which explains the need for a finite renormalization of the cosmological constant which was previously inferred from explicit computation. A variant of the renormalization group turns out to explain the large logarithmic corrections revealed by explicit computation in the electric field strength of gravitational radiation and in the potentials which characterize the response to a point mass. We present a new computation of the renormalized graviton self-energy induced by a loop of massless, minimally coupled scalars on de Sitter background. Our result takes account of the need to include a finite renormalization of the cosmological constant, which was not included in the first analysis. We also avoid preconceptions concerning structure functions and instead express the result as a linear combination of 21 tensor differential operators. Dependence on the graviton gauge enters the conventional effective field equations because they fail to account for quantum gravitational correlations with the source which excites the effective field and with the observer who measures it. We investigate 13 hyperfine structures of transition lines of 127I2 near 554 nm, namely, the R(50) 22-0, P(46) 22-0, P(121) 24-0, P(69) 25-1, R(146) 25-0, R(147) 28-1, P(160) 26-0, P(102) 26-1, R(96) 23-0, R(49) 22-0, P(45) 22-0, P(92) 23-0, and R(72) 25-1 transitions, and measure their absolute frequencies with an optical frequency comb. A 369 nm frequency-tripled laser is frequency stabilized by locking the 554 nm harmonic-frequency laser to the R(146) 25-0 a15 line of 127I2 via modulation transfer spectroscopy. A frequency stability of 5E-12 is observed over a 1000 s integration time. The measurement of the molecular iodine spectroscopy at 554 nm enriches high-precision experimental data, and also enables theoretical predictions. Meanwhile, the 369 nm frequency-tripled laser stabilized by molecular iodine spectroscopy has wide applications in frequency metrology, and quantum information processing based on Yb+ ions.

Recent progress on nonlinear sigma models on de Sitter background has permitted the resummation of large inflationary logarithms by combining a variant of Starobinsky's stochastic formalism with a variant of the renormalization group. We reconsider single graviton loop corrections to the photon wave function, and to the Coulomb potential, in light of these developments. Neither of the two 1-loop results have a stochastic explanation, however, the flow of a curvature-dependent field strength renormalization explains their factors of $\ln(a)$. We reported the realization of a $^{174}\mathrm{Yb}^+$-$^{113}\mathrm{Cd}^+$ bi-species Coulomb crystal comprising $^{174}\mathrm{Yb}^+$ ions as coolant and verified its potential for application as a $^{113}\mathrm{Cd}^+$ microwave frequency standard employing sympathetic cooling.The two species of massive ions stably trapped in a Paul trap make up this large two-component crystal. The $^{113}\mathrm{Cd}^+$ ions are trapped in the center, which reduces considerably RF heating and excess micromotion to which the $^{113}\mathrm{Cd}^+$ ions are subjected. Under this scheme, the uncertainty due to the second-order Doppler effect is reduced to $5\times10^{-16}$, which represents an order of magnitude improvement over sympathetic cooled $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}^+$-$^{113}\mathrm{Cd}^+$ crystal. The uncertainty from the second-order Zeeman effect, which contributes the largest uncertainty to the microwave-ion frequency standard, is reduced to $4\times10^{-16}$. The relevant AC Stark shift uncertainty is estimated to be $4\times10^{-19}$. These results indicate using $^{174}\mathrm{Yb}^+$ as coolant ions for $^{113}\mathrm{Cd}^+$ is far superior and confirm the feasibility of a sympathetic-cooled cadmium-ion microwave clock system employing a $^{174}\mathrm{Yb}^+$-$^{113}\mathrm{Cd}^+$ two-component crystal.

We consider two models which couple derivatives of the inflaton to ordinary matter, both to fermions and to scalars. Such couplings induce changes to the inflaton kinetic energy, analogous to the cosmological Coleman-Weinberg potentials which come from nonderivative couplings. Our purpose is to investigate whether these quantum-induced K-Essence models can provide efficient reheating without affecting the observational constraints on primordial inflation. We consider reheating for a charged inflaton which is minimally coupled to electromagnetism. The evolution of such an inflaton induces a time-dependent mass for the photon. We show how the massive photon propagator can be expressed as a spatial Fourier mode sum involving three different sorts of mode functions, just like the constant mass case. We develop accurate analytic approximations for these mode functions, and use them to approximate the effective force exerted on the inflaton $0$-mode. The accurate evaluation of the second-order Doppler frequency shift (SODFS) of trapped ions in a linear Paul trap has been studied with experiments and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The motion of trapped ions in the trap has three contributions, and we focus on the ion excess micromotion, which is rarely discussed when evaluating the SODFS. Based on the hypothesis that the ion density is uniformly distributed in the radial direction, we propose a new model to accurately evaluate the total SODFS for ion microwave clocks. The effectiveness of the model has been verified both in simulation and experiment, especially for ion ensemble with temperature less than 100 mK. We believe that our new model offers advantages in accurately evaluating the SODFS for the ion trap, especially those of laser-cooled ion microwave clocks based on large ion clouds.

Regarding trapped-ion microwave-frequency standards, we report on the determination of hyperfine splittings and Land\'{e} $g_J$ factors of $^{111,113}$Cd$^+$. The hyperfine splittings of the $5p~^2P_{3/2}$ state of $^{111,113}$Cd$^+$ ions were measured using laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy. The Cd$^+$ ions were confined in a linear Paul trap and sympathetically cooled by Ca$^+$ ions. Furthermore, the hyperfine splittings and Land\'{e} $g_J$ factors of the $5s~^2S_{1/2}$ and $5p~^2P_{1/2,3/2}$ levels of $^{111,113}$Cd$^+$ were calculated with greater accuracy using the multiconfiguration Dirac--Hartree--Fock scheme. The measured hyperfine splittings and the Dirac--Hartree--Fock calculation values were cross-checked, thereby further guaranteeing the reliability of our results. The results provided in this work can improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the clock transition and the accuracy of the second-order Zeeman shift correction, and subsequently the stability and accuracy of the microwave frequency standard based on trapped Cd$^+$ ions.

We have sympathetically cooled and crystallized ${}^{113}\mathrm{{Cd}}^{+}$ ions with laser-cooled ${}^{40}\mathrm{{Ca}}^{+}$ ions, and directly observed the complete large bicrystal structure in a linear Paul trap. The large two-component crystal contains up to $3.5\times10^3$ ${}^{40}\mathrm{{Ca}}^{+}$ ions and $6.8\times10^3$ ${}^{113}\mathrm{{Cd}}^{+}$ ions. The temperature of the crystallized ${}^{113}\mathrm{{Cd}}^{+}$ ions was measured to be as low as 41 mK with a large mass ratio. Moreover, we have studied several properties and structures of the ultracold sample. The factors affecting the sympathetic cooling effect were studied, including the electrical parameters and the number ratio between laser-cooled ions and sympathetically-cooled ions. The results of this paper enrich the experimental research of large two-component ion crystals, and the ultracold sample of ${}^{113}\mathrm{{Cd}}^{+}$ ions makes it possible to further improve the accuracy of the cadmium-ion microwave frequency standard.

We report on progress towards a microwave frequency standard based on a laser-cooled 171Yb+ ion trap system. The electronics, lasers, and magnetic shields are integrated into a single physical package. With over 1E5 ions are stably trapped, the system offers a high signal-to-noise ratio Ramsey line-shape. In comparison with previous work, the frequency instability of a 171Yb+ microwave clock was further improved to $8.5 \times {10^{ - 13}}/\sqrt \tau$ for averaging times between 10 and 1000 s., Comment: 5Pages,5figurew

We consider single graviton loop corrections to the effective field equation of a massless, minimally coupled scalar on de Sitter background in the simplest gauge. We find a large temporal logarithm in the approach to freeze-in at late times, but no correction to the feeze-in amplitude. We also find a large spatial logarithm (at large distances) in the scalar potential generated by a point source, which can be explained using the renormalization group with one of the higher derivative counterterms regarded as a curvature-dependent field strength renormalization. We measured the ground-state hyperfine splitting of trapped ${}^{113}$Cd${}^{+}$ ions to be 15199862855.02799(27) Hz with a fractional uncertainty of $1.8\times10^{-14}$. The ions were trapped and laser-cooled in a linear quadrupole Paul trap. The fractional frequency stability was measured to be ${4.2} \times 10^{-13}/\sqrt{\tau} $, obtained from Ramsey fringes of high signal-to-noise ratio and taken over a measurement time of nearly 5 hours, which is close to the short-term stability limit estimated from the Dick effect. Our result is consistent with previous reported values, but the measurement precision is four times better than the best result obtained to date.

We consider two nonlinear sigma models on de Sitter background which involve the same derivative interactions as quantum gravity but without the gauge issue. The first model contains only a single field, which can be reduced to a free theory by a local field redefinition; the second contains two fields and cannot be so reduced. Loop corrections in both models produce large temporal and spatial logarithms which cause perturbation theory to break down at late times and large distances. Many of these logarithms derive from the "tail" part of the propagator and can be summed using a variant of Starobinsky's stochastic formalism involving a curvature-dependent effective potential. The remaining logarithms derive from the ultraviolet and can be summed using a variant of the renormalization group based on a special class of curvature-dependent renormalizations. We accurately approximate the contribution that photons make to the effective potential of a charged inflaton for inflationary geometries with an arbitrary first slow roll parameter $\epsilon$. We find a small, nonlocal contribution and a numerically larger, local part. The local part involves first and second derivatives of $\epsilon$, coming exclusively from the constrained part of the electromagnetic field which carries the long range interaction. This causes the effective potential induced by electromagnetism to respond more strongly to geometrical evolution than for either scalars, which have no derivatives, or spin one half particles, which have only one derivative. We exploit a recent computation of one graviton loop corrections to the self-mass [1] to quantum-correct the field equation for a massless, conformally coupled scalar on a de Sitter background. With the obvious choice for the finite part of the $R^2 \phi^2$ counterterm, we find that neither plane wave mode functions nor the response to a point source acquires large infrared logarithms. Cosmological Coleman-Weinberg potentials are induced when normal matter is coupled to the inflaton. It has long been known that the corrections from bosonic fields are positive whereas those from fermionic fields are negative. In flat space both take the form $\pm \varphi^4 \ln(\varphi)$, and they can be made to cancel by appropriately choosing the coupling constants. In an expanding universe the bosonic and fermionic results no longer take the same form, although their large field limits do. We choose the coupling constants so that the large field limits cancel, and then follow the deviations which result as inflation progresses. We use a simplified formalism to re-compute the single graviton loop contribution to the self-mass of a massless, conformally coupled scalar on de Sitter background which was originally made by Boran, Kahya and Park [1-3]. Our result resolves the problem with the flat space correspondence limit that was pointed out by Fr\"ob [4]. We study the response of a classical massless minimally coupled scalar to a static point scalar charge on de Sitter. By considering explicit solutions of the problem we conclude that -- even though the dynamics formally admits dilatation (scaling) symmetry -- the physical scalar field profile necessarily breaks the symmetry. This is an instance of symmetry breaking in classical physics due to large infrared effects. The gravitational backreaction, on the other hand, does respect dilatation symmetry, making this an example of symmetry non-inheritance phenomenon., Comment: 10 pages

We formulate the graviton propagator on de Sitter background in a 2-parameter family of simple gauges which break de Sitter invariance. Explicit results are derived for the first order perturbations in each parameter. We reconsider the fine-tuning problem of scalar-driven inflation arising from the need to couple the inflaton to ordinary matter in order to make reheating efficient. Quantum fluctuations of this matter induce Coleman-Weinberg corrections to the inflaton potential, depending (for de Sitter background) in a complex way on the ratio of the inflaton to the Hubble parameter. These corrections are not Planck-suppressed and cannot be completely subtracted because they are not even local for a general geometry. A previous study showed that it is not satisfactory to subtract a local function of just the inflaton and the {\it initial} Hubble parameter. This paper examines the other allowed possibility of subtracting a local function of the inflaton and the Ricci scalar. We develop an analytic approximation for the coincidence limit of a massive scalar propagator in an arbitrary spatially flat, homogeneous and isotropic geometry. We employ this to compute the one loop corrections to the inflaton effective potential from a quadratic coupling to a minimally coupled scalar. We consider an additional fine-tuning problem which afflicts scalar-driven models of inflation. The problem is that successful reheating requires the inflaton be coupled to ordinary matter, and quantum fluctuations of this matter induces Coleman-Weinberg potentials which are not Planck-suppressed. Unlike the flat space case, these potentials depend upon a still-unknown, nonlocal functional of the metric which reduces to the Hubble parameter for de Sitter. Such a potential cannot be completely subtracted off by any local action. In a simple model we numerically consider one possible subtraction scheme in which the correction is locally subtracted at the beginning of inflation. For fermions the effect is to make the universe approach de Sitter with a smaller Hubble parameter. One graviton loop corrections to the vacuum polarization on de Sitter show two interesting infrared effects: a secular enhancement of the photon electric field strength and a long range running of the Coulomb potential. We show that the first effect derives solely from the "tail" term of the graviton propagator, but that the second effect does not. Our result agrees with the earlier observation that the secular enhancement of massless fermion mode functions derives from solely from the tail term. We study one loop quantum gravitational corrections to the long range force induced by the exchange of a massless scalar between two massive scalars. The various diagrams contributing to the flat space S-matrix are evaluated in a general covariant gauge and we show that dependence on the gauge parameters cancels at a point considerably {\it before} forming the full S-matrix, which is unobservable in cosmology. We use dimensional regularization in pure quantum gravity on de Sitter background to evaluate the one loop expectation value of an invariant operator which gives the local expansion rate. We show that the renormalization of this nonlocal composite operator can be accomplished using the counterterms of a simple local theory of gravity plus matter, at least at one loop order. We employ a recent, general gauge computation of the one loop graviton contribution to the vacuum polarization on de Sitter to solve for one loop corrections to the photon mode function. The vacuum polarization takes the form of a gauge independent, spin 2 contribution and a gauge dependent, spin 0 contribution. We argue that the fine tuning problems of scalar-driven inflation may be worse than is commonly believed. The reason is that reheating requires the inflaton to be coupled to other matter fields whose vacuum fluctuations alter the inflaton potential. The usual response has been that even more fine-tuning of the classical potential $V(\varphi)$ can repair any damage done in this way. We point out that the effective potential in de Sitter background actually depends in a complicated way upon the dimensionless combination of $\varphi/H$. We evaluate the one-graviton loop contribution to the vacuum polarization on de Sitter background in a 1-parameter family of exact, de Sitter invariant gauges. Our result is computed using dimensional regularization and fully renormalized with BPHZ counterterms, which must include a noninvariant owing to the time-ordered interactions. Because the graviton propagator engenders a physical breaking of de Sitter invariance two structure functions are needed to express the result. In addition to its relevance for the gauge issue this is the first time a covariant gauge graviton propagator has been used to compute a noncoincident loop.
