Abstract Background To analyze the impact of the time of natural cessation of the umbilical cord on maternal and infant outcomes in order to explore the time of clamping that would be beneficial to maternal and infant outcomes. Methods The study was a cohort study and pregnant women who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of Qilu Hospital of Shandong University from September 2020 to September 2021. Analysis using Kruskal-Wallis rank sum test, Pearson’s Chi-squared test, generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) and repeated measures ANOVA. Abstract Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a serious traumatic disease of the central nervous system and leads to incomplete or complete loss of the body’s autonomous motor and sensory functions, seriously endangering human health. Recently, exosomes have been proposed as important substances in cell-to-cell interactions. Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-derived exosomes exert good therapeutic effects and play a crucial role in neurological damage repair. However, the detailed mechanisms underlying their effects remain unknown. Herein, we found that compared to SCI rats, those subjected to umbilical cord MSC (UC-MSC)-derived exosomes injection showed an improved motor ability. Nevertheless, the transcriptome of BV2 microglia in different treatment groups indicated that the action pathway of exosomes might be the NF-κB/MAPK pathway. Additionally, exosomes from UC-MSCs could inhibit P38, JNK, ERK, and P65 phosphorylation in BV2 microglia and SCI rat tissues. Moreover, exosomes could inhibit apoptosis and inflammatory reaction and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production of BV2 microglia in vitro and in vivo. In conclusion, UC-MSCs-derived exosomes might protect SCI in rats by inhibiting inflammatory response via the NF-κB/MAPK signaling pathway, representing novel treatment targets or approaches for SCI.

Abstract Background This case report documents a case of malignant pheochromocytoma manifested as vision changes with lung metastasis and recurrence. Case presentation A 10-year-old Han Chinese girl presented with vision changes and was eventually diagnosed with pheochromocytoma by contrast-enhanced computed tomography, urine vanillylmandelic acid. After medication for hypertension and surgery, clinical symptoms disappeared. Malignant pheochromocytoma with lung metastasis was confirmed histologically using the Pheochromocytoma of the Adrenal Gland Scaled Score scoring system and genetically with succinate dehydrogenase complex iron sulfur subunit B mutation, and 3 months later, unplanned surgery was performed because of the high risks and signs of recurrence. She is asymptomatic as of the writing of this case report. Our patient’s case highlights the importance of considering a diagnosis of malignant pheochromocytoma, and long-term follow-up for possible recurrence. Conclusion Although there are well-recognized classic clinical manifestations associated with pheochromocytoma, atypical presentation, such as vision changes in children, should be considered. In addition, malignant pheochromocytoma children with a high Pheochromocytoma of the Adrenal Gland Scaled Score and succinate dehydrogenase complex iron sulfur subunit B mutation require a long-term follow-up or even unplanned surgery because of the higher risk of recurrence.

Water-soluble lignin-carbohydrate complex (LCC) rich in polysaccharides exhibits benign in vitro antioxidant activities and distinguishes high biocompatibility from lignin-rich LCC and lignin. However, the antioxidant activity of water-soluble LCCs remains to be improved and its structure-antioxidant relationship is still uncertain. Herein, structurally diversified water-soluble LCCs were isolated under different ball-milling pretreatment durations (4, 6, 8 h), extraction pathways (homogeneous and heterogeneous), and isolation routines (water extracts and residues after water extraction). Their structures were characterized by wet chemistry, chromatography and spectroscopies. Antioxidant activities were evaluated by ferric reducing antioxidant power and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radicals scavenging rate (RDPPH). Results show that altering ball-milling duration and isolation procedures cause varied structures and antioxidant activities of the water-soluble LCCs. Specifically, prolonging ball-milling duration to 8 hours and homogeneous extraction can enhance their antioxidant activity through releasing more phenolic structures and promoting the extraction of high-molecular-weight LCCs via reducing mass-transfer resistance, respectively. As a result, the RDPPH of water-soluble LCCs reaches up to 97.35%, which is associated with the arabinan content with statistical significance (P < 0.05). This study provides new insights into the structure-antioxidation relationship of herbaceous LCC as potential antioxidants.

Abstract How cells coordinate cell cycling with cell survival and death remains incompletely understood. Here, we show that cell cycle arrest has a potent suppressive effect on ferroptosis, a form of regulated cell death induced by overwhelming lipid peroxidation at cellular membranes. Mechanistically, cell cycle arrest induces diacylglycerol acyltransferase (DGAT)–dependent lipid droplet formation to sequester excessive polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) that accumulate in arrested cells in triacylglycerols (TAGs), resulting in ferroptosis suppression. Consequently, DGAT inhibition orchestrates a reshuffling of PUFAs from TAGs to phospholipids and re-sensitizes arrested cells to ferroptosis. We show that some slow-cycling antimitotic drug–resistant cancer cells, such as 5-fluorouracil–resistant cells, have accumulation of lipid droplets and that combined treatment with ferroptosis inducers and DGAT inhibitors effectively suppresses the growth of 5-fluorouracil–resistant tumors by inducing ferroptosis. Together, these results reveal a role for cell cycle arrest in driving ferroptosis resistance and suggest a ferroptosis-inducing therapeutic strategy to target slow-cycling therapy-resistant cancers.

Background: Endometrial cancer (EC) is the leading gynecological cancer worldwide, yet current EC screening approaches are not satisfying. The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the feasibility and capability of DNA methylation analysis in cervical Papanicolaou (Pap) brush samples for EC detection. Methods: We used quantitative methylation-sensitive PCR (qMS-PCR) to determine the methylation status of candidate genes in EC tissue samples, as well as cervical Pap brushes. The ability of RASSF1A and HIST1H4F to serve as diagnostic markers for EC was then examined in cervical Pap brush samples from women with endometrial lesions of varying degrees of severity. Results: Methylated RASSF1A and HIST1H4F were found in EC tissues. Further, methylation of the two genes was also observed in cervical Pap smear samples from EC patients. Methylation levels of RASSF1A and HIST1H4F increased as endometrial lesions progressed, and cervical Pap brush samples from women affected by EC exhibited significantly higher levels of methylated RASSF1A and HIST1H4F compared to noncancerous controls ( P

Abstract Background An international pandemic of severe coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has been caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. A large number of patients with chest trauma were infected with COVID-19. The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the management of chest trauma. Objective The present observational study was conducted to evaluate the clinical characteristics and outcomes of chest trauma patients with or without COVID-19 infection. Methods A multicenter observational study was performed at three Chinese hospitals between November 1, 2022, and January 31, 2023. All enrolled patients were diagnosed with chest trauma. We analyzed data from existing medical records, including all baseline data and prognostic follow-up data, such as 30-day mortality, hospital stays, hospitalization costs, and complications. Results All 375 eligible patients completed the follow-up. There was no significant difference in baseline characteristics between chest trauma combined with COVID-19 (p > 0.05). In order to find culturable bacteria resources and antibacterial activity strain in the rhizosphere soil of mangrove plants from the Maowei Sea, the rhizosphere soil of five mangrove plants(Rhizophora stylosa, Talipariti tiliaceum, Sonneratia apetala, Aegiceras corniculatum, and Pluchea indica) was cultured by enrichment media and then isolated the culturable bacteria. The culturable bacteria were purified by six different isolation media. The diversity of culturable bacteria was analyzed by the 16S rRNA gene sequence information. Antimicrobial activities (Staphylococcus epidermidis, methicillin-resistant S. aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) of the culturable bacteria were analyzed by disk diffusion method. The results were as follows: (1) A total of 120 strains were isolated from seven rhizosphere soil samples of mangrove plants which could be classified into 35 families and 47 genera, among which five potential new species were obtained. The dominant genus was Streptomyces (14.2%). (2) It was found that the crude extracts of nine strains had antibacterial activity against at least one pathogen. The results indicate that there are abundant culturable bacteria and potential new antibiotics resources in the mangrove rhizosphere soils from the Maowei Sea.

Zanthoxylum bungeanum Maxim. is an essential spice and medicinal plant in China. Zanthoxylum bungeanum Maxim. has a distinct bitterness due to 7-methoxylcoumarin. The bitterness of Zanthoxylum bungeanum Maxim. restricted the development and utilization of its products. This study aimed to explore the masking effect and mechanism of whey protein isolate on the bitterness of Zanthoxylum bungeanum Maxim.. The masking mechanism of the bitterness of Zanthoxylum bungeanum Maxim. by whey protein isolate was investigated using the method of sensory evaluation, electronic tongue and molecular docking technique with Zanthoxylum bungeanum Maxim. oleoresin as the matrix. The results indicated that whey protein isolate could significantly mask the bitterness of Zanthoxylum bungeanum Maxim. oleoresin. Furthermore, there was a mass concentration-effect relationship between bitterness reduction values of Zanthoxylum bungeanum Maxim. oleoresin and the additive amount of whey protein isolate. When the dosage of whey protein isolate was 1.00% and the concentration of Zanthoxylum bungeanum oleoresin was 0.5%, the reduction value of ΔBI was 1.8, indicating that the bitterness masking effect was good. The molecular docking model showed that 7-methoxycoumarin and β-lactoglobulin had 20 docking conformations in cluster 2, and the lowest binding free energy was −5.90 kcal/mol. Hence, cluster 2 was the most likely binding region for their interaction. It could be concluded that whey protein isolate could mask the bitterness of Zanthoxylum bungeanum Maxim. oleoresin by binding to 7-methoxycoumarin and preventing it from binding to bitter receptors. The results may provide a reference for the taste correction of Zanthoxylum bungeanum Maxim. products.

Using density functional theory combined with the first principles calculation method of non-equilibrium Green’s function (NEGF-DFT), we studied the thermoelectric (TE) characteristics of one-dimensional γ-graphdiyne nanoribbons (γ-GDYNRs). The study found that the thermal conductivity of γ-GDYNRs has obvious anisotropy. At the same temperature and geometrical size, the lattice thermal conductivity of zigzag-edged γ-graphdiyne nanoribbons (γ-ZGDYNRs) is much lower than that of armchair-edged γ-graphdiyne nanoribbons (γ-AGDYNRs). We disclose the underlying mechanism for this intrinsic orientation. That is, γ-AGDYNRs have more phonon dispersion over the entire frequency range. Furthermore, the orientation dependence increases when the width of the γ-GDYNRs decreases. These excellent TE properties allow armchair-edged γ-graphdiyne nanoribbons with a planar width of 1.639 nm (γ-Z(2)GDYNRs) to have a higher power factor and lower thermal conductivity, ultimately resulting in a significantly higher TE conversion rate than other γ-GDYNR structures.

Astragalus membranaceus saponins are the main components of A. membranaceus, a plant widely used in traditional Chinese medicine. Recently, research on the anti-cancer effects of A. membranaceus saponins has received increasing attention. Numerous in vitro and in vivo experimental data indicate that A. membranaceus saponins exhibit significant anti-cancer effects through multiple mechanisms, especially in inhibiting tumor cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and induction of apoptosis, etc. This review compiles relevant studies on the anti-cancer properties of A. membranaceus saponins from various databases over the past two decades. It introduces the mechanism of action of astragalosides, highlighting their therapeutic benefits in the management of cancer. Finally, the urgent problems in the research process are highlighted to promote A. membranaceus saponins as an effective drug against cancer.

In this study, to better understand the reaction mechanism between inorganic salts and nitrocellulose, CaCO3 and Li2CO3 were evaluated with respect to their effects on the thermal degradation of NC in nitrogen atmosphere using TG/DSC at three different heating rates (2, 5, 10 K/min). The numerical relationship between activation energy (E) and conversion rate was obtained by FWO and KAS method, and it was discovered that CaCO3 could improve the thermal stability of NC. Activation energy values were calculated by Kissinger method, and it was found that NC that contain Li2CO3 had the highest activation energy while NC containing CaCO3 had the lowest E value. By combining the thermal analysis data with Malek method, the most probable mechanism model of thermal degradation is obtained as Šesták-Berggren model, which expression is f(α) = αm (1 - α)n. As a result of this study, there are certain guiding principles that can be applied to the pyrolysis reaction model and to the actual production process of nitrocellulose.

Basilepta melanopus is a pest that severely affects oil tea plants, and the Notch signaling pathway plays a significant role in the early development of insect ovaries. In this study, we explored the function of the notch gene within the Notch signaling pathway in the reproductive system of B. melanopus. The functional domains and expression patterns of Bmnotch were analyzed. Bmnotch contains 45 epidermal growth factor-like (EGF-like) domains, one negative regulatory region, one NODP domain and one repeat-containing domain superfamily. The qPCR reveals heightened expression in early developmental stages and specific tissues like the head and ovaries. The RNA interference (RNAi)-based suppression of notch decreased its expression by 52.1%, exhibiting heightened sensitivity to dsNotch at lower concentrations. Phenotypic and mating experiments have demonstrated that dsNotch significantly impairs ovarian development, leading to reduced mating frequencies and egg production. This decline underscores the Notch pathway’s crucial role in fecundity. The findings advocate for RNAi-based, Notch-targeted pest control as an effective and sustainable strategy for managing B. melanopus populations, signifying a significant advancement in forest pest control endeavors.

Abstract Introduction Multiple rib fractures (≥ 3 displaced rib fractures and/or flail chest) are severe chest trauma with high morbidity and mortality. Rib fixation has become the first choice for multiple rib fracture treatment. However, the timing of surgical rib fixation is unclear. Materials and methods The present study explored whether early rib fracture fixation can improve the outcome of multiple rib fractures. The present research included patients who were hospitalized in three Jiangsu hospitals following diagnosis with multiple rib fractures. Patients received early rib fracture fixation (≤ 48 h) or delayed rib fracture fixation (> 48 h) utilizing computer-based random sequencing (in a 1:1 ratio). The primary outcome measures included hospital length of stay, intensive care unit (ICU) stay, mechanical ventilation, inflammatory cytokine levels, infection marker levels, infection, and mortality. Results A total of 403 individuals were classified into two groups, namely, the early group (n = 201) and the delayed group (n = 202). Patients belonging to the two groups had similar baseline clinical data, and there were no statistically significant differences between them. Summary: Wood, with its inherent hierarchical structure, presents opportunities for creating eco-friendly and cost-effective alternatives to petroleum-based plastics. We introduced a top-down and polymer-free method for engineering natural balsa wood into transparent wood film, demonstrating its potential use in food packaging windows. The wood was delignified and then proceeded with 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy oxidation to soften the wood structure and introduce carboxyl groups. A robust and transparent wood film was produced by drying the wood under ambient condition without the need for additional polymers or mechanical force. Curcumin was also integrated into the wood using vacuum impregnation. The functionalized wood film with curcumin (WFC) exhibited a distinguishable redness shift in alkaline conditions. We then applied the WFC as an intelligent food packaging window to sense the freshness of shrimp based on the pH-responsive color change. This study provides a simple and scalable approach for developing sustainable and smart food packaging using wood.

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a severe complication of diabetes mellitus, posing significant challenges in terms of early prevention, clinical diagnosis, and treatment. Consequently, it has emerged as a major contributor to end-stage renal disease. The glomerular filtration barrier, composed of podocytes, endothelial cells, and the glomerular basement membrane, plays a vital role in maintaining renal function. Disruptions in podocyte function, including hypertrophy, shedding, reduced density, and apoptosis, can impair the integrity of the glomerular filtration barrier, resulting in elevated proteinuria, abnormal glomerular filtration rate, and increased creatinine levels. Hence, recent research has increasingly focused on the role of podocyte injury in DN, with a growing emphasis on exploring therapeutic interventions targeting podocyte injury. Studies have revealed that factors such as lipotoxicity, hemodynamic abnormalities, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and impaired autophagy can contribute to podocyte injury. This review aims to summarize the underlying mechanisms of podocyte injury in DN and provide an overview of the current research status regarding experimental drugs targeting podocyte injury in DN. The findings presented herein may offer potential therapeutic targets and strategies for the management of DN associated with podocyte injury.

The laser safety of small and medium-sized flying units, exemplified by missiles, is crucial for ensuring their operational stability. In this regard, the response process of an encased propellant system comprising PBT propellant, stainless steel shell, and thermal insulation layer (EPDM) was meticulously captured during laser irradiation. The temperature distribution within the shell and insulation layer was determined through high-speed infrared thermography and finite element calculation. Results show that at a laser heat flux density of 2100 W/cm2, when the contact surface of the propellant reaches its ignition temperature, introducing a 1 mm insulation layer allows dissipation of 48.6-60.1% of the heat in the 0.5-1.6 mm shell beyond the laser irradiation range, significantly higher than the 3.1-12.2% observed without thermal insulation. Simultaneously, the ignition delay time increases from 0.45-0.75 s to 1.31-14.46 s. Theoretical calculations and experimental results confirm that replacing a portion of the shell with a thermal insulation layer achieves a lower heating rate of propellant with a thinner overall thickness, resulting in a longer ignition delay time. These findings have practical implications for enhancing the resistance of thin-shell targets, like rocket engines, against laser weapon interception.

[INLINE:1] Dendrites play irreplaceable roles in the nerve conduction pathway and are vulnerable to various insults. Peripheral axotomy of motor neurons results in the retraction of dendritic arbors, and the dendritic arbor can be re-expanded when reinnervation is allowed. RhoA is a target that regulates the cytoskeleton and promotes neuronal survival and axon regeneration. However, the role of RhoA in dendrite degeneration and regeneration is unknown. In this study, we explored the potential role of RhoA in dendrites. A line of motor neuronal RhoA conditional knockout mice was developed by crossbreeding HB9Cre+ mice with RhoAflox/flox mice. We established two models for assaying dendrite degeneration and regeneration, in which the brachial plexus was transection or crush injured, respectively. We found that at 28 days after brachial plexus transection, the density, complexity, and structural integrity of dendrites in the ventral horn of the spinal cord of RhoA conditional knockout mice were slightly decreased compared with that in Cre mice. Dendrites underwent degeneration at 7 and 14 days after brachial plexus transection and recovered at 28–56 days. The density, complexity, and structural integrity of dendrites in the ventral horn of the spinal cord of RhoA conditional knockout mice recovered compared with results in Cre mice. These findings suggest that RhoA knockout in motor neurons attenuates dendrite degeneration and promotes dendrite regeneration after peripheral nerve injury.

Transactive memory system (TMS), as the powerful collective cognition, is well-documented to support team performance. Given today’s boundaryless era with great uncertainty, managing boundaries has become challenging but critical for teams. However, how TMS would influence teams to engage with external environments through boundary management remains underexplored. Adopting an open-system perspective, we explore how TMS affects team boundary management and further contributes to team performance in uncertain environments. Empirical results from 337 respondents embedded in 56 teams revealed that TMS was positively related to all three types of team boundary management. Among them, boundary spanning and reinforcement was positively associated with team performance, while boundary reinforcement mediated the relationship between TMS and team performance. Lastly, environmental uncertainty was found to play an important moderating role in the TMS - team performance relationship. Accordingly, this research advances the knowledge of how teams would manage while being influenced by their external environments.

In this article, the wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology is applied to the space chaotic laser communication system. We deduce the bit error rate (BER) model of multi-channel space chaotic laser communication with Doppler frequency shift. Based on the BER model, the effect of Doppler frequency shift on the performance of four-channel space chaotic laser communication systems on the synchronous orbit(GEO)-low earth orbit(LEO) and GEO-mid earth orbit(MEO) has been discussed in detail. The numerical simulation results indicate that the effect of Doppler frequency shift on GEO-LEO system is much less than GEO-MEO system. Therefore, the Doppler frequency shift effect of GEO-LEO system can be overcome by redundant design, and the Doppler frequency shift effect of GEO-MEO system must be paid more attention to the optimum design. Besides, the relationship between the performance of communication system and frequency shift under different channels are similar. The result has an important implication for reducing the complexity of the system design. These results of the article are significant for the design of the four-channel space chaotic laser communication system.

Ecotourism potential is a fundamental research effort needed to promote sustainable regional tourism development, and scholars have paid greater attention to it in recent years, which has led to an increase in the publication of literature on this important and widely recognized topic. However, there is still no clear picture of the development direction of research on ecotourism potential. To address this issue, this study attempts to provide a comprehensive analysis of the existing research state in this field. This paper presents a more detailed review of ecotourism potential, a bibliometric analysis of 949 articles selected from 1,027 publications retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database, and a systematic descriptive and network analysis of the bibliometric data using the Biblioshiny tool. Here are some interesting findings: (1) research on the ecotourism potential in the academy started in 1992, with a rapid growth in the number of publications after 2013, with an overall interdisciplinary character and the emergence of a research community represented by Milcu, Balmford, Gallagher, and others; (2) ecotourism, conservation, tourism, management, and biodiversity are high-frequency keywords in this field, revealing the main research directions; (3) the development and evolution of research focus are mainly on three aspects: wildlife and biodiversity conservation, nature-based tourism and environmental values, and the modes and contributions of community participation. Future research should focus on the scientific references of ecotourism potential for promoting regional sustainable development. This paper sheds some light on the comprehensive bibliometric studies on ecotourism potential and improves our understanding of the evolution of this academic discourse theme over the last three decades.

Exposure to ionizing radiation leads to oxidative damages in living cells. NADPH provides the indispensable reducing power to regenerate the reduced glutathione to maintain cellular redox equilibria. In mammalian cells, pentose phosphate pathway (PPP) is the major route to produce NADPH by using glycolytic intermediates, and the rate-limiting step of PPP is controlled by glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD). Nevertheless, whether G6PD is timely co-opted under ionizing radiation to cope with oxidative stress remains elusive. Here we show that cellular G6PD activity is induced 30 min after ionizing radiation, while its protein expression is mostly unchanged. Mechanistically, casein kinase 2 (CK2) phosphorylates G6PD T145 under ionizing radiation, which consolidates the enzymatic activity of G6PD by facilitating G6PD binding with its substrate NADP+. Further, CK2-dependent G6PD T145 phosphorylation promotes NADPH production, decreases ROS level and supports cell proliferation under ionizing radiation. Our findings report a new anti-oxidative signaling route under ionizing radiation, by which CK2-mediated rapid activation of G6PD orchestrates NADPH synthesis to maintain redox homeostasis, thereby highlighting its potential value in the early treatment of ionizing radiation-induced injuries.

Green gas generator 5-aminotetrazole(5-AT) has been widely used as a kind of energetic material with excellent properties, and it is crucial to understand its pyrolysis process and mechanism. The present study comprehensively investigated the thermochemistry, kinetics, and pyrolysis mechanism of green gas generator 5-AT, using a combination of experimental analysis and theoretical calculation. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to investigate the pyrolysis behavior of 5AT and energy barriers of transition states for different pyrolysis paths of three isomers of 5AT were also calculated at a high and reliable level of theory CCSD(T)/cc-pvtz. The results showed that the pyrolysis of 5-AT had five reaction stages and kinetic parameters in each stage were determined by Kissinger method and Criado method. Furthermore, the elimination of N2 from the tetrazole ring occurred before that of HN3, and N2 elimination had lower energy than HN3 elimination for 1-hydrogen-5-aminotetrazole and 2-hydrogen-5-aminotetrazole, but HN3 elimination had lower energy for 5-iminotetrazole. The results of the study provide useful insights into the pyrolysis mechanism and kinetics of 5-AT and could contribute to its efficient utilization in various applications.

Background: Intestinal mucositis (IM) is characterized by damage to the intestinal mucosa resulting from inhibition of epithelial cell division and loss of renewal capacity following anticancer chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Cytarabine (Ara-C), the main chemotherapy drug for the treatment of leukemia and lymphoma, is a frequent cause of IM. Guiqi Baizhu prescription (GQBZP) is a traditional Chinese medicine with anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory effects. Purpose: To determine if GQBZP can ameliorate Ara-C induced IM and identify and characterize the pharmacologic and pharmacodynamic mechanisms. Study design and methods: IM was induced in mice with Ara-C and concurrently treated with orally administered GQBZP. Body weight and food intake was monitored, with HE staining to calculate ileal histomorphometric scoring and villus length/crypt depth. Immunoblotting was used to detect intestinal tissue inflammatory factors. M1 macrophages (M1) were labeled with CD86 by flow cytometry and iNOS + F4/80 by immunofluorescence. Virtual screening was used to find potentially active compounds in GQBZP that targeted JAK2. In vitro, RAW264.7 cells were skewed to M1 macrophage polarization by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and interferon-γ (INF-γ) and treated orally with GQBZP or potential active compounds. M1 was labeled with CD86 by flow cytometry and iNOS by immunofluorescence. ELISA was used to detect inflammatory factor expression. Active compounds against JAK2, p-JAK2, STAT1 and p-STAT1 were identified by western blotting and HCS fluorescence. Molecular dynamics simulations and pharmacokinetic predictions were carried out on representative active compounds. Results: Experimental results with mice in vivo suggest that GQBZP significantly attenuated Ara-C-induced ileal damage and release of pro-inflammatory factors by inhibiting macrophage polarization to M1. Molecular docking was used to identify potentially active compounds in GQBZP that targeted JAK2, a key factor in macrophage polarization to M1. By examining the main components of each herb and applying Lipinski’s rules, ten potentially active compounds were identified. In vitro experimental results suggested that all 10 compounds of GQBZP targeted JAK2 and could inhibit M1 polarization in RAW264.7 cells treated with LPS and INF-γ. Among them, acridine and senkyunolide A down-regulated the expression of JAK2 and STAT1. MD simulations revealed that acridine and senkyunolide A were stable in the active site of JAK2 and exhibited good interactions with the surrounding amino acids. Conclusions: GQBZP can ameliorate Ara-C-induced IM by reducing macrophage polarization to M1, and acridine and senkyunolide A are representative active compounds in GQBZP that target JAK2 to inhibit M1 polarization. Targeting JAK2 to regulate M1 polarization may be a valuable therapeutic strategy for IM.

ObjectiveThis study aimed to explore the safety and efficacy of simultaneous interventional therapy for compound congenital heart disease (CCHD) in children.MethodsIn total, 155 children with CCHD who received simultaneous interventional therapy at the Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University between January 2007 and December 2021 were included in study. Data on clinical manifestations, transthoracic echocardiography, electrocardiogram, and follow-up were retrospectively analyzed.ResultsThe most common type of CCHD was atrial septal defect (ASD) combined with ventricular septal defect (VSD), accounting for 32.3% of the patients. Simultaneous interventional therapy was successfully administered to 151 children (97.4%). The pulmonary gradient of patients with pulmonary stenosis decreased from 47.3 ± 21.9 mmHg to 15.2 ± 12.2 mmHg (P 40 mmHg post procedure. The right ventricular dimension and left ventricular end-diastolic dimension significantly decreased in the first month after the procedure in patients with ASD combined with VSD. Twenty-five (16.1%) patients had mild residual shunt, which spontaneously disappeared in more than half of these patients 6 months after the procedure. The major adverse events were minimal (n = 4, 2.58%), including one patient requiring drug treatment for complete atrioventricular block and three patients receiving surgical treatment because of cardiac erosion, anterior tricuspid valve chordae rupture, and hemolysis, respectively.ConclusionsASD combined with VSD is the most common type of CCHD in children, and simultaneous interventional therapy for CCHD in children is safe and effective with satisfactory results. Ventricular remodeling can be reversed in patients with ASD combined with VSD 1 month after the procedure. Most adverse events associated with interventional therapy are mild and manageable.

Rotundic acid (RA), an ursane-type pentacyclic triterpene acid isolated from the dried barks of Ilex rotunda Thunb. (Aquifoliaceae), possesses diverse bioactivities. To further study its pharmacokinetics, a simple and sensitive liquid chromatography with triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC-QqQ-MS/MS) method was developed and validated to quantify RA concentration in rat plasma and tissue using etofesalamide as an internal standard (IS). Plasma and tissue samples were subjected to one-step protein precipitation. Chromatographic separation was achieved on a ZORBAX Eclipse XDB-C18 column (4.6 mm × 50 mm, 5 μm) under gradient conditions with eluents of methanol:acetonitrile (1:1, V/V) and 5 mM ammonium formate:methanol (9:1, V/V) at 0.5 mL/min. Multiple reaction monitoring transitions were performed at m/z 487.30 → 437.30 for RA and m/z 256.10 → 227.10 for IS in the negative mode. The developed LC-QqQ-MS/MS method exhibited good linearity (2–500 ng/mL) and was fully validated in accordance with U.S. Food and Drug Administration bioanalytical guidelines. Dose proportionality and bioavailability in rats were determined by comparing pharmacokinetic data after single oral (10, 20, and 40 mg/kg) and intravenous (10 mg/kg) administration of RA. Tissue distribution was studied following oral administration at 20 mg/kg. The results showed that the absolute bioavailability of RA after administration at different doses ranged from 16.1% to 19.4%. RA showed good dose proportionality over a dose range of 10–40 mg/kg. RA was rapidly absorbed in a dose-dependent manner and highly distributed in the liver. In conclusion, this study is the first to systematically elucidate the absorption and distribution characteristics of RA in rats, which can provide additional information for further development and evaluation of RA in drug metabolism and pharmacokinetic studies.

The lower member of the Middle Jurassic Xishanyao Formation (J2x1+2) sandstones are significant exploratory targets for hydrocarbon resources in the Taibei Sag of the Turpan-Hami Basin, northwestern China. Formation of anomalously high porosity/permeability in deeply buried J2x1+2 sandstones and reservoir quality prediction were investigated using a variety of petrographic analyses. These results show that the J2x1+2 sandstones are mostly feldspathic litharenites and litharenites, which are characterized by moderate-to good sorting, silty to medium granularity, and point- to long grain contacts. The J2x1+2 sandstone has low porosity (avg 6.0%) and permeability (avg 1.12 mD), but shows anomalously high porosity/permeability at depth interval of 3850–4050 m. There is a noticeable variation in pore types and sizes from intergranular-intragranular dissolution pores with a size mode of 2.0 μm in anomalously high porosity (AHP) sandstones, to major intragranular dissolution pores with a size mode of 0.5 μm in normally high porosity (NHP) sandstones, to most micropores with a size mode of 0.25 μm occurred in the normally low porosity (NLP) sandstones. The compaction is the main cause of porosity destruction, resulting in an average porosity loss of 89.6%. However, the authigenic minerals have relatively little influence on reservoir quality. The combination of nappe tectonics and well-sorted particles alleviated the compaction and thus preserved more intergranular pores in the AHP sandstones. Dissolution further increases the porosity and eventually forms the AHP sandstones. The strong carbonate-cemented facies (SCC), tightly compacted facies (TC), moderately compacted with moderate dissolution facies (MCMD), and weakly compacted with strong dissolution facies (WCSD) are determined in the J2x1+2 sandstones. The sandstones with SCC and TC are recognized as the NLP reservoirs. The MCMD and WCSD correspond to the NHP and AHP reservoirs, respectively. The reservoir quality predicted using the constructed diagenetic facies charts is in good agreement with the photomicrograph observations and physical property tests. Additionally, the AHP reservoirs are still developed in the deeply buried sandstones with depths larger than 4000 m.

This study empirically investigates the moderating effect of board activeness on the relationship between the structure of corporate ownership and firm performance. The objective was evaluated using the hierarchal panel regressions with data from non-financial companies of the Pakistan Stock Exchange from 2009 to 2018, operationalizing the ownership structure as state ownership, associated companies, foreign ownership, ownership concentration, institutional ownership, and family ownership, and firm performance as operating performance, financial performance, and stock market performance. The findings of the study revealed that operating, financial, and stock market performance were favorably influenced by the ownership stakes of the state, associated concerns, institutions, and foreigners. Family interests proved to be diverse for the firm performance. The isolated effect of the board consistently uplifted the firm productivity, but its interactional impact with all the ownership stakeholders postulated differential outcomes for internal and external performance. The study provides valuable insights for policymakers and investors to make optimal strategies to manage ownership interests and enhance value.

Abstract Background The guidelines of National Health Service(NHS, the United Kingdom) recommended for use in obstetrics at increased risk of bleeding, requiring two suction devices to reduce amniotic fluid contamination, however, when comes to massive hemorrhage, it is may difficult to operate because the complex operation may delay time. The aim of the study was to detect the effect of amniotic fluid recovery on intraoperative cell salvage in obstetrics and provide evidence for clinical applications. Method Thirty-four patients undergoing elective cesarean section were randomly divided into two groups. In group 1, the cumulative blood from the operation field, including the amniotic fluid, was collected using a single suction device for processing. In group 2, after suctioning away the amniotic fluid using another suction device for the cumulative blood from the operation field. From each group, four samples were taken, including maternal venous blood (sample I), blood before washing (sample II), blood after washing (sample III) and blood after filtration with a leukocyte filter (sample IV), to detect serum potassium (K +), hemoglobin (Hb), white blood cell (WBC), fetal hemoglobin (HbF), alpha fetoprotein (AFP) and squamous cell (SC) levels. Results The AFP, K + and WBC levels of sample III and sample IV were significantly lower than sample I in group 1 and group 2 (P 0.05). There was no significant difference in the K + , Hb, WBC, AFP and SC levels of sample IV between group 1 and group 2 (P > 0.05). Wallerian degeneration, the progressive disintegration of distal axons and myelin that occurs after peripheral nerve injury, is essential for creating a permissive microenvironment for nerve regeneration, and involves cytoskeletal reconstruction. However, it is unclear whether microtubule dynamics play a role in this process. To address this, we treated cultured sciatic nerve explants, an in vitro model of Wallerian degeneration, with the microtubule-targeting agents paclitaxel and nocodazole. We found that paclitaxel-induced microtubule stabilization promoted axon and myelin degeneration and Schwann cell dedifferentiation, whereas nocodazole-induced microtubule destabilization inhibited these processes. Evaluation of an in vivo model of peripheral nerve injury showed that treatment with paclitaxel or nocodazole accelerated or attenuated axonal regeneration, as well as functional recovery of nerve conduction and target muscle and motor behavior, respectively. These results suggest that microtubule dynamics participate in peripheral nerve regeneration after injury by affecting Wallerian degeneration. The design and synthesis of efficient photocatalysts that promote the degradation of organic pollutants in water have attracted extensive attention in recent years. In this work, CdS nanoparticles are grown in situ on Co@C derived from metal–organic frameworks. The resulting hierarchical CdS/Co@C nanostructures are evaluated in terms of their adsorption and photocatalytic ciprofloxacin degradation efficiency under visible-light irradiation. The results show that, apart from offering a large surface area (55.69 m2·g−1), the prepared material can effectively suppress the self-agglomeration of CdS and enhance the absorption of visible light. The CdS/Co@C-7 composite containing 7% wt Co@C has the highest photodegradation rate, and its activity is approximately 4.4 times greater than that of CdS alone. Moreover, this composite exhibits remarkable stability after three successive cycles of photocatalysis. The enhanced photocatalytic performance is largely ascribed to the rapid separation of electron–hole pairs and the effective electron transfer between CdS and Co@C, which is confirmed via electrochemical experiments and photoluminescence spectra. The active substance capture experiment and the electron spin resonance technique show that h+ is the main active entity implicated in the degradation of CIP, and accordingly, a possible mechanism of CIP photocatalytic degradation over CdS/Co@C is proposed. In general, this work presents a new perspective on designing novel photocatalysts that promote the degradation of organic pollutants in water.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a multifactorial and chronic degenerative joint disease. Due to the adverse effects of currently used drugs, a safer and more effective therapy for treating OA is needed. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARγ) is a key protein protecting cartilage. DNMT1-mediated hypermethylation of PPARγ promoter leads to its suppression. Therefore, DNMT1 might be an effective target for exerting cartilage protective effects by regulating the epigenetic expression of PPARγ. Dabushen decoction (DD) is a representative prescription of Dunhuang ancient medical prescription, which has a potential therapeutic effect on OA. So far, the research of the efficacy and material basis of DD in the treatment of OA remains unclear. In this study, Micro-CT, HE staining, S-O staining, and immunohistochemistry analysis were used to demonstrate that DD increased the expression of PPARγ and collagen synthesis in an OA rat model. Next, the structure of DNMT1 was used to screen the active constituents of DD by molecular docking method for treatment OA. Seven potential active constituents, including isoliquiritigenin, emodin, taxifolin, catalpol, alisol A, zingerone, and schisandrin C were hited. The protective effect of the potential active constituents to chondrocytes were evaluated by protein capillary electrophoresis, immunofluorescence assays, and ex vivo culture of rat knee cartilage. The five constituents, such as alisol A, emodin, taxifolin, isoliquiritigenin, and schisandrin C could promote the expression of PPARγ and ameliorate IL-1β-induced downregulation of collagen II and the production of MMP-13. Alisol A and Emodin could effectively mitigate cartilage damage. At last, molecular dynamics simulations with MM-GBSA method was applied to investigate the interaction pattern of the active constituents and DNMT1 complexes. The five constituents, such as alisol A, emodin, taxifolin, isoliquiritigenin, and schisandrin C achieved a stable binding pattern with DNMT1, in which alisol A has a relatively high binding free energy. In conclusion, this study elucidates that the active constituents of DD (alisol A, emodin, taxifolin, isoliquiritigenin, and schisandrin C) could ameliorate osteoarthritis via PPARγ preservation by targeting DNMT1.These findings facilitated clinical use of DD and provided a valuable strategy for developing natural epigenetic modulators from Chinese herbal formula.

Radiation-induced oral mucositis is the most common complication for patients who receive head/neck radiotherapy. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) is vital for DNA damage repair under ionizing radiation, through functioning as either the substrate for protein poly(ADP-ribosyl)ation at DNA break sites or the cofactor for multiple DNA repair-related enzymes, which therefore can result in a significant consumption of cellular NAD+ during DNA repair. Mammalian cells produce NAD+ mainly by recycling nicotinamide via the salvage pathway, in which the rate-limiting step is governed by nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase (NAMPT). However, whether NAMPT is co-opted under ionizing radiation to timely fine-tune NAD+ homeostasis remains elusive. Here we show that ionizing radiation evokes NAMPT activation within 30 min without apparent changes in its protein expression. AMPK rapidly phosphorylates NAMPT at S314 under ionizing radiation, which reinforces the enzymatic activity of NAMPT by increasing NAMPT binding with its substrate phosphoribosyl pyrophosphate (PRPP). AMPK-mediated NAMPT S314 phosphorylation substantially restores NAD+ level in the irradiated cells and facilitates DNA repair and cell viability. Our findings demonstrate a new post-translational modification-based signalling route, by which cells can rapidly orchestrate NAD+ metabolism to support DNA repair, thereby highlighting NAMPT as a potential target for the prevention of ionizing radiation-induced injuries.

Abstract Osteosarcoma is one of the most common primary malignancies in bones and is characterized by high metastatic rates. Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) derived from solid tumors can give rise to metastatic lesions, increasing the risk of death in patients with cancer. Here, we used bioinformatics tools to compare the gene expression between CTCs and metastatic lesions in osteosarcoma to identify novel molecular mechanisms underlying osteosarcoma metastasis. We identified TRAIP as a key differentially expressed gene with prognostic significance in osteosarcoma. We demonstrated that TRAIP regulated the proliferation and invasion of osteosarcoma cells. In addition, we found that TRAIP promoted KANK1 polyubiquitination and subsequent degradation, downregulating IGFBP3 and activating the AKT pathway in osteosarcoma cells. These results support the critical role of the TRAIP/KANK1/IGFBP3/AKT signaling axis in osteosarcoma progression and suggest that TRAIP may represent a promising therapeutic target for osteosarcoma.

Degradation behavior of combustible fuel is the core factor in determining combustion characteristics. To investigate the effect of ambient atmosphere on the pyrolysis process of polyoxymethylene (POM), the pyrolysis mechanism of POM was studied with thermogravimetric analyzer tests and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy tests. The activation energy, reaction model, and estimated lifetime of POM pyrolysis under different kinds of ambient gases have been estimated in this paper based on different results of the kinetics. The activation energy values, obtained with different methods, were 151.0–156.6 kJ mol−1 in nitrogen and 80.9–127.3 kJ mol−1 in air. Then, based on the Criado analysis, the pyrolysis reaction models of POM in nitrogen were found to be mastered by the “n + m = 2; n = 1.5” model, and by the “A3” model in air. The optimum processing temperature for POM was estimated, with a range from 250 to 300 °C in nitrogen and from 200 to 250 °C in air. IR analysis revealed that the significant difference in POM decomposition between N2 and O2 atmospheres is the formation of isocyanate group or carbon dioxide. Combustion parameters of two POMs (with and without flame retardants) obtained using cone calorimetry revealed that flame retardants can effectively improve the ignition time, smoke release rate, and other parameters of POM. The outcomes of this study will contribute to the design, storage, and transportation of polyoxymethylene.

With the development of communication technology, there is a more urgent demand for enhancing the security of data transmission. In order to improve the security of the traditional chaotic laser communication system, we propose a new scheme by the introduction of wavelength-hopping technology based on tunable lasers. In our new scheme, due to the hopping of wavelengths and the pseudo-randomness of the wavelength-hopping sequence, it is difficult for the eavesdropper to intercept the information and predict to which wavelength the hopping station will hop. The numerical simulation results show that the average bit error rate of eavesdropping is about five orders of magnitude higher than that of working normally. This indicates that the introduction of wavelength-hopping technology can improve the difficulty of message decoding and improve the confidentiality of the system. This scheme can be used to realize a high level of privacy in the design of chaotic laser communication systems in the future.

Abstract MITA (also known as STING) is an ER-located adaptor protein, which mediates DNA-triggered innate immune response and is critically involved in autoimmune diseases and tumorigenesis. MITA is regulated by post-translational modifications, but how post-transcriptional mechanisms are involved in the regulation of MITA is still largely unknown. Here, we identified the RNA-binding protein LUC7L2 as a negative regulator of DNA virus-triggered innate immune response. LUC7L2-deficient mice exhibited resistance to lethal herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) infection and reduced HSV-1 loads in the brain. Mechanistically, LUC7L2 directly bound to intron 3 of MITA precursor messenger RNA, inhibited its splicing and promoted its nonsense-mediated decay, leading to its downregulation at protein level. LUC7L2-deficient cells had markedly increased MITA level, leading to heightened innate antiviral response. Finally, LUC7L2 was induced following HSV-1 infection. Our findings reveal a feedback negative post-transcriptional regulatory mechanism for regulation of MITA-mediated innate immune response to viral and aberrant cellular DNA.

Semi-supervised learning has always been a hot topic in machine learning. It uses a large number of unlabeled data to improve the performance of the model. This paper combines the co-training strategy and random forest to propose a novel semi-supervised regression algorithm: semi-supervised random forest regression model based on co-training and grouping with information entropy (E-CoGRF), and applies it to the evaluation of depression symptoms severity. The algorithm inherits the ensemble characteristics of random forest, and combines well with co-training. In order to balance the accuracy and diversity of co-training random forests, the algorithm proposes a grouping strategy to decision trees. Moreover, the information entropy is used to measure the confidence, which avoids unnecessary repeated training and improves the efficiency of the model. In the practical application of evaluation of depression symptoms severity, we collect cognitive behavioral data of emotional conflict based on the depressive affective disorder. And on this basis, feature construction and normalization preprocessing are carried out. Finally, the test is conducted on 35 labeled and 80 unlabeled depression patients. The result shows that the proposed algorithm obtains MAE (Mean Absolute Error) = 3.63 and RMSE (Root Mean Squared Error) = 4.50, which is better than other semi-supervised regression algorithms. The proposed method effectively solves the modeling difficulties caused by insufficient labeled samples, and has important reference value for the diagnosis of depression symptoms severity.

Abstract Advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) results in generally poor clinical outcomes and necessitates better therapeutic strategies. Ivermectin, which is an existing anti‐parasitic drug, has been recently identified as a novel anti‐cancer drug. In line with previous efforts, this work demonstrates the translational potential of ivermectin to treat advanced HCC. We demonstrated that ivermectin at clinically relevant concentrations was active against growth and survival in multiple HCC cell lines. We showed that ivermectin had the potential to inhibit metastasis and target HCC stem cell functions. Mechanism studies correlated well with cellular phenotypes observed in ivermectin‐treated cells, and demonstrated inhibition of mTOR/STAT3 pathway, suppression of epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT) and reduced expression of stem cell markers. We further demonstrated that ivermectin inhibited tumor formation and growth in HCC xenograft mouse model, without causing significant toxicity in the mice. Using combination index (CI), we showed that ivermectin and sorafenib were synergistic in HCC in vitro, and this was further confirmed in vivo. Our work demonstrates the potent anti‐HCC activities of ivermectin and its multiple targets on essential oncogenic pathways. Our findings provide preclinical evidence to initialize clinical trial using ivermectin and sorafenib for treating advanced HCC.

The depth of electrodes inserted into the charge plays a vital role in controlling the submerged arc furnace. Therefore, we used ultrasound waves reflected from the electrode tip to estimate the depth of electrodes inserted into the charge. However, graphite’s ultrasonic velocity and transmission loss are the basis for establishing an ultrasonic measurement system. Thus, we expected to improve our understanding of them through numerical simulations and experimental measurements. First, we proposed an ultrasonic detection method to estimate the electrode length by embedding graphite rods in Söderberg electrodes. Then, we developed a 3D finite element model in COMSOL for wave transmission in the graphite rod. The wave transmission through 20 and 40 cm graphite rods was simulated using finite element models. The transmission loss, sound pressure, intensity, and displacement distribution of the sound wave passing through the graphite electrode were calculated. To verify the simulation calculation results, we further conducted an acoustic experiment. The results showed that transmission loss varies significantly with frequency. When the frequency was between 25 and 55 kHz, the transmission loss of the graphite rod was slight. At 47 kHz, the transmission loss was 1.837 dB/m.

Background The association between the type of anesthesia used and the recurrence of cancer remains controversial. This study aimed to compare the effects of local vs general anesthesia on recurrence-free survival and cost after breast-conserving surgery. Materials and Methods We reviewed the data of 2778 patients who underwent breast-conserving surgery followed by radiation at our center between 1999 and 2014. We analyzed the data of 994 patients with hormone receptor-positive and Her2-negative tumors who underwent breast-conserving surgery without axillary lymph node dissection under local or general anesthesia. Patients were grouped according to whether local or general anesthesia was used for the surgery. Results Of the 994 patients enrolled in this study, 367 received local anesthesia and 627 patients received general anesthesia. The median follow-up duration for all patients was 93 months. The Kaplan–Meier survival curves did not reveal significant differences between the recurrence-free survival of the two groups, with 5-year recurrence-free survival rates of 96.3% (95% CI, 94.3–98.3%) in the local anesthesia group and 97.3% (95% CI, 95.9–98.7%) in the general anesthesia group. In this work, yellow pine (YP, softwood) and switchgrass (SG, grass) lignins were extracted as a coproduct of an organosolv γ-valerolactone (GVL) biorefinery that also produces biofuels and furfural. The extracted lignins were converted to carbon precursors for synthesizing porous activated carbon electrodes for high energy-density supercapacitors. This research details the impact of lignin composition on the derived porous structures and electrochemical properties of activated carbons. Lignin precursors with various syringyl (S) to guaiacyl (G) contents were characterized using 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and two-dimensional 1H‒13C NMR. A two-step activation process, using steam and carbon dioxide as the activating agents, enabled the formation of porous carbons structures with high surface area. The capacitive behavior of supercapacitors was systematically characterized by cyclic voltammetry, charge-discharge cycling, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The specific capacitance of YP and SG capacitors reached 367 and 221 F g−1, respectively. Both types of capacitors demonstrated remarkably stable capacitance (capacitance retention >90%) along with excellent Coulombic efficiency (>99%) over 10,000 cycles. Compared to SG electrode, the better electrochemical performance achieved with YP electrodes was mainly due to shorter diffusion path, improved ionic mobility, and increased active surface area. The inexpensive lignin-based porous electrodes synthesized in this work can be used for various electrochemical devices for improved performance, decreased cost, and enhanced durability. This work also demonstrates that the selection of feedstock and appropriate processing conditions can tailor the structure of carbon composites for targeted applications. Techno-economic analysis indicates that YP and SG activated carbons can be produced at a minimum selling price of $8,493 and $6,670 per ton, respectively, which is competitive with the commercially available supercapacitor-grade activated carbons.

BackgroundArma custos Fallou (Hemiptera: Asopinae) is an important predatory insect native to China, South Korea, and Mongolia. It is important to understand the evolution of egg cannibalism in A. custos to evaluate the biocontrol potential of this species. However, few reports have suggested egg cannibalism in A. custos, and whether hungry adult A. custos males and females prey on their eggs remains unknown. Here, we investigated the effects of the parental sex of A. custos adults on egg cannibalism of parental and non-parental eggs (kinship) under no-choice and free-choice conditions, along with the effects of predator and egg density on egg cannibalism under starvation conditions.ResultsFemales frequently visited and cannibalized a higher proportion of eggs, whereas males almost did not participate in egg cannibalism (less than 17% males showed egg cannibalism behavior). Moreover, regardless of their relationship with the egg, neither male nor female adults consumed all available eggs even in the absence of an alternative food source, and >70% of eggs remained unconsumed. In contrast, cannibalistic males and females did not discriminate between parental and non-parental egg types. Meanwhile, cannibalism rates were similar when adults were offered 30 eggs or more. However, when offered fewer than 30 eggs, cannibalism rates declined disproportionally, suggesting that limited egg availability reduced cannibalism. Additionally, the lifespan of A. custos adult females increased significantly with increasing number of consumed eggs (p < 0.05).ConclusionArma custos females exhibit a higher tendency for egg cannibalism than males. Neither male or female A. custos discriminated between parental and non-parental egg types. Cannibalism enhances survival in that a starved individual who predates on eggs survives similarly to a well-fed individual. These findings provide a model to study the evolution and biological significance of egg cannibalism in A. custos and also contribute to the efficient mass rearing and realization of A. custos for biological control.

Owing to the strength in learning representation of the high-order connectivity of graph neural networks (GNN), GNN-based collaborative filtering has been widely adopted in recommender systems. Furthermore, to overcome the data sparsity problem, some recent GNN-based models attempt to incorporate social information and to design contrastive learning as an auxiliary task to assist the primary recommendation task. Existing GNN and contrastive-learning-based recommendation models learn user and item representations in a symmetrical way and utilize social information and contrastive learning in a complex manner. The above two strategies lead to these models being either ineffective for datasets with a serious imbalance between users and items or inefficient for datasets with too many users and items. In this work, we propose a contrastive graph learning (CGL) model, which combines social information and contrastive learning in a simple and powerful way. CGL consists of three modules: diffusion, readout, and prediction. The diffusion module recursively aggregates and integrates social information and interest information to learn representations of users and items. The readout module takes the average value of user embeddings from all diffusion layers and item embeddings at the last diffusion layer as readouts of users and items, respectively. The prediction module calculates prediction rating scores with an interest graph to emphasize interest information. Three different losses are designed to ensure the function of each module. Extensive experiments on three benchmark datasets are implemented to validate the effectiveness of our model.
