Leaf heading is an important agronomic trait of Chinese cabbage, which directly affects its yield. Leaf heading formation in Chinese cabbage is controlled by its internal genotype and external environmental factors, the underlying mechanism of which remains poorly understood. To discover the leaf heading formation mechanism more deeply, this study analyzed the correlation between proteomic and transcriptomic data in the leaf heading formation mutant fg-1 generated by EMS. iTRAQ-based quantitative proteomics techniques were performed to identify the protein expression profiles during the key periods of the early heading stage in the section of the soft leaf apical region (section a) and the whole leaf basal region (section d). We first identified 1,246 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) in section a and 1,055 DEPs in section d. Notably, transcriptome–proteome integrated analysis revealed that 207 and 278 genes showed consistent trends at the genes’ and proteins’ expression levels in section a and section d, respectively. KEGG analyses showed that the phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathway was enriched in both sections a and d. Furthermore, 86 TFs exhibited co-upregulation or co-downregulation, and seven out of 86 were involved in plant hormone synthesis and signal transduction pathways. This indicates that they are potentially related to the leaf heading formation in Chinese cabbage. Taken together, we have identified several key early-heading-formation-related factors via integration analysis of the transcriptomics and proteomics data. This provides sufficient gene resources to discover the molecular mechanism of leaf heading formation.

Heat shock protein 20 (Hsp20) plays a very important role in response to abiotic stressors such as drought; however, in lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.), this gene family is poorly understood. This study used bioinformatics methods to identify 36 members of the lettuce Hsp20 family, which were named LsHsp20–1~LsHsp20–36. Subcellular localization results revealed that 26 members of the LsHsp20 protein family localized to the cytoplasm and nucleus. Additionally, 15 conserved domains were identified in the LsHsp20 protein family, with the number of amino acids ranging from 8 to 50. Gene structure analysis revealed that 15 genes (41.7%) had no introns, and 20 genes (55.5%) had one intron. The proportion of the LsHsp20 secondary structure was random coil > alpha helix > extended strand > beta turn. Chromosome positioning analysis indicated that 36 genes were unevenly distributed on nine chromosomes, and four pairs of genes were collinear. The Ka/Ks ratio of the collinear genes was less than 1, indicating that purifying selection dominated during L. sativa evolution. Thirteen pairs of genes were collinear in lettuce and Arabidopsis, and 14 pairs of genes were collinear in lettuce and tomato. A total of 36 LsHsp20 proteins were divided into 12 subgroups based on phylogenetic analysis. Three types of cis-acting elements, namely, abiotic and biotic stress-responsive, plant hormone-responsive, and plant development-related elements, were identified in the lettuce LsHsp20 family. qRT-PCR was used to analyze the expression levels of 23 LsHsp20 genes that were significantly upregulated on the 7th or 14th day of drought treatment, and the expression levels of two genes (LsHsp20–12 and LsHsp20–26) were significantly increased by 153-fold and 273-fold on the 14th and 7th days of drought treatment, respectively. The results of this study provide comprehensive information for research on the LsHsp20 gene family in lettuce and lay a solid foundation for further elucidation of Hsp20 biological functions, providing valuable information on the regulatory mechanisms of the LsHsp20 family in lettuce drought resistance.

Ultra-high dose rate radiotherapy (FLASH-RT) is an external beam radiotherapy strategy that uses an extremely high dose rate (≥40 Gy/s). Compared with conventional dose rate radiotherapy (≤0.1 Gy/s), the main advantage of FLASH-RT is that it can reduce damage of organs at risk surrounding the cancer and retain the anti-tumor effect. An important feature of FLASH-RT is that an extremely high dose rate leads to an extremely short treatment time; therefore, in clinical applications, the steps of radiotherapy may need to be adjusted. In this review, we discuss the selection of indications, simulations, target delineation, selection of radiotherapy technologies, and treatment plan evaluation for FLASH-RT to provide a theoretical basis for future research.

IntroductionStrigolactone (SL) and auxin are two important phytohormones involved in plant root development, but whether they show synergistic or mutual promotion effects during adventitious root (AR) formation has not been adequately explored.MethodsIn this study, we investigated the mechanisms of GR24 (synthetic SL) and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA; a type of auxin) in the formation of ARs using melon as the study material.ResultsMorphological measurements showed that the AR number, length, superficial area, and volume under the GR24 treatment were 1.60–3.27, 1.58–3.99, 2.06–3.42, and 3.00–6.11 times greater than those of the control group, respectively, at 6–10 days; the GR24+IAA treatment further promoted AR formation in melon seedlings, and the AR number, length, superficial area, and volume under the GR24+IAA treatment were 1.44–1.51, 1.28–1.73, 1.19–1.83, and 1.31–1.87 times greater than those obtained with the GR24 treatment, respectively. Transcriptome analysis revealed 2,742, 3,352, and 2,321 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) identified from the GR24 vs. control, GR24+IAA vs. control, and GR24+IAA vs. GR24 comparisons, respectively. The GR24 treatment and GR24+IAA treatment affected auxin and SL synthesis as well as components of the phytohormone signal transduction pathway, such as auxin, brassinosteroid (BR), ethylene (ETH), cytokinin (CK), gibberellin (GA), and abscisic acid (ABA). The concentrations of auxin, GA, zeatin (ZT), and ABA were evaluated using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). From 6 to 10 days, the auxin, GA, and ZT contents in the GR24 treatment group were increased by 11.48%–15.34%, 11.83%–19.50%, and 22.52%–66.17%, respectively, compared to the control group, and these features were increased by 22.00%–31.20%, 21.29%–25.75%, 51.76%–98.96%, respectively, in the GR24+IAA treatment group compared with the control group. Compared to that in the control, the ABA content decreased by 10.30%–11.83% in the GR24 treatment group and decreased by 18.78%-24.00% in the GR24+IAA treatment group at 6–10 days.DiscussionOur study revealed an interaction between strigolactone and auxin in the induction of AR formation in melon seedlings by affecting the expression of genes related to plant hormone pathways and contents.

Radiation enteritis (Re) is one of the most common complications of radiation therapy for abdominal tumors. The efficacy of cancer treatment by radiation is often limited by the side effects of Re. Re can be acute or chronic. Treatment of acute Re is essentially symptomatic. However, chronic Re usually requires surgical procedures. The underlying mechanisms of Re are complex and have not yet been elucidated. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the pathogenesis of Re. We reviewed the role of intestinal epithelial cells, intestinal stem cells (ISCs), vascular endothelial cells (ECs), intestinal microflora, and other mediators of Re, noting that a better understanding of the pathogenesis of Re may lead to better treatment modalities.

It is difficult to avoid the shedding of brackets during orthodontic treatment, which may not only affect the orthodontic therapeutic effect but also prolong the orthodontic treatment duration. Sodium hypochlorite is a common⁃ ly used root canal irrigation agent in oral medicine and is seldom used in orthodontic treatment. Sodium hypochlorite on the enamel surface can strengthen the effect of etching by deproteinization to improve adhesion, which could reduce the probability of bracket shedding during orthodontic treatment. Therefore, this article reviews the effects of sodium hypo⁃ chlorite on enamel.

Introduction: Spontaneous pneumomediastinum with pneumopericardium is an uncommon clinical entity., Case Study: Here, we report the case of a 23-year-old male with asthma who presented with acute chest pain and shortness of breath after an episode of coughing and sneezing. CT scans of the chest and neck revealed pneumomediastinum and pneumopericardium with extensive subcutaneous emphysema extending into the axilla and neck., Results: The patient was admitted for observation and analgesia. No other interventions were administered. Interval scans performed on day five of the admission demonstrated an interval reduction in the degree of air within the mediastinum, pericardium and subcutaneous tissues, and the patient was subsequently discharged home., Conclusion: This case outlines the presentation, diagnosis, and management of concurrent spontaneous pneumomediastinum and pneumopericardium.

Objective: To understand the prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection among special populations in Nanjing City, so as to provide the reference for formulating the interventions for the prevention and control of T. gondii infections in this population., Methods: The HIV/AIDS patients, tumor patients, pregnant women, and people with livestock and poultry breeding or processing works were selected as the study subjects from September to November 2015. The venous blood samples were collected from each participant for detecting IgG and IgM antibodies against T. gondii by ELISA., Results: The overall prevalence of T. gondii infection was 10.2% in the study subjects in Nanjing City. The T. gondii infection rates were 12.2%, 11.3%, 4.0%, and 13.0% among the HIV/AIDS patients, tumor patients, pregnant women, and people with livestock and poultry breeding or processing works, respectively, and there was no statistically significant difference among the four groups ( χ 2 = 5.668, P = 0.130). The prevalence of T. gondii infection was higher in men than in women (15.3% vs. 5.8%; χ 2 = 10.213, P = 0.001), and there were significant differences in the prevalence of T. gondii infection in terms of gender ( χ 2 = 9.501, P = 0.023), education levels ( χ 2 = 9.850, P = 0.043) or occupations ( χ 2 = 8.983, P = 0.062)., Conclusions: The infection rate of T. gondii among the special population in Nanjing City is high. Therefore, the health education intervention should be strengthened in the follow-up work for the special population.
