The IDV observations of S4 0917+624 were carried out monthly, from August 2005 to January 2010, with the Urumqi 25m radio telescope at 4.8 GHz. The quasar S4 0917+624 exhibits only very weak or no IDV during our 4.5 year observing interval. Prior to the year 2000, the source S4 0917+624 was one of the most prominent IDV sources. Our new data indicate that the previous strong IDV has ceased. We analyzed the long-term VLBI structural variability using Gaussian model-fitting. From this we obtained the flux densities and the deconvolved sizes of core and inner-jet components of the source. We studied the properties such as core fraction, angular size, spectral index, and brightness temperature of VLBI core for S4 0917+624, as well as the time delay between 5 and 15 GHz variations, and compared them with the IDV properties of S4 0917+624. The source shows ejection of several jet components that are suspected to have partially reduced the IDV amplitude of S4 0917+624. However, during 2005-2006, the VLBI core size was comparable to the size before the year 2000, but no strong IDV was detected in the period, suggesting that the quenching effect due to source size changes may not be responsible for the lack of strong IDV after the year 2000. The refractive scattering properties for the strong IDV phase of S4 0917+624 before the year 2000 are discussed. The disappearance of strong IDV in S4 0917+624 after the year 2000 is a mystery and cannot be explained via the quenching effect by changes in the observable VLBI structure. However, it may be caused by changes in the interstellar medium, i.e. by interstellar weather, which induces changes in the scintillation pattern on timescales of several years. Further coordinated multi-frequency observations will be required to distinguish between the effect of source-intrinsic variability and changing properties of the interstellar medium., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The quasar 1156+295 (4C +29.45) is one of the targets in the Urumqi monitoring program which aimed to search for evidence of annual modulation in the timescales of intra-day variable (IDV) sources. The IDV observations of 1156+295 were carried out nearly monthly from October 2007 to October 2009, with the Urumqi 25m radio telescope at 4.8 GHz. The source has shown prominent IDV of total flux density in most observing sessions with variability timescales of <= 1 day at 4.8 GHz. The estimated IDV timescales seem to follow an annual cycle that can be fitted with an anisotropic interstellar scintillation (ISS) model suggesting that a significant part of the flux density variations is due to ISS. The source underwent a dramatic flare in 2008. We studied the possible consequences of the flare on the IDV of 1156+295 by comparing the changes in its IDV characteristics with the evolution of the 43 GHz Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) core size of the source. Conclusions: The quasar 1156+295 shows evidence for an annual modulation of its IDV timescales at 4.8 GHz, the ISS-induced IDV timescales and variability strength might be affected by the overall activity state of the source core. We aim to investigate the relation between the long-term flux density and the position angle (PA) evolution of inner-jet in blazars. We have carried out the elliptic Gaussian model-fit to the `core' of 50 blazars from 15 GHz VLBA data, and analyzed the variability properties of three blazars from the model-fit results. Diverse correlations between the long-term peak flux density and the PA evolution of the major axis of the `core' have been found in $\sim$ 20% of the 50 sources. Of them, three typical blazars have been analyzed, which also show quasi-periodic flux variations of a few years (T). The correlation between the peak flux density and the PA of inner-jet is positive for S5~0716+714, and negative for S4~1807+698. The two sources cannot be explained with the ballistic jet models, the non-ballistic models have been analyzed to explain the two sub-luminal blazars. A correlation between the peak flux density and the PA (with a T/4 time lag) of inner-jet is found in [HB89]~1823+568, this correlation can be explained with a ballistic precession jet model. All the explanations are based mainly on the geometric beaming effect; physical flux density variations from the jet base would be considered for more complicated situations in future, which could account for the no or less significance of the correlation between the peak flux density and the PA of inner-jet in the majority blazars of our sample., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Astrophysics and Space Science
