Planar 1D photonic crystals (1DPhCs), owing to their photonic bandgaps (PBGs) formed by unique structural interference, are widely utilized in light protection applications. Multifunctional coatings that integrate various light management functions are highly desired. In this study, we present the fabrication of dual-PBG 1DPhCs with high reflectance in both the blue and near-infrared (NIR) regions. The 1DPhCs were constructed through the alternating stacking of hollow SiO 2 (HS) nanoparticles hybridized with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), referred to as PHS, and TiO 2 layers. The 1DPhC with 7 bilayers demonstrated remarkable reflectance of 98.2% and 93.4% in the blue and NIR spectra, respectively, with shielding efficiencies of 93.9% and 85.6%. Compared to bare PC, the temperature was observed to be 10.6 °C lower, achieving a thermal insulation efficiency of 44.8% in the 900 nm near-infrared range. Additionally, spectral fitting using the transfer matrix method (TMM) and optimization of process parameters, including PHS concentration and spin-coating speed, enabled the fabrication of 1DPhCs with tunable optical thickness ratios. The fabricated films demonstrated a smooth surface morphology with flat and uniform interfaces, as well as excellent environmental stability. These features make the 1DPhCs highly promising for applications in light protection and thermal management. This study provides a novel approach for the development of dual-PBG 1DPhCs with enhanced protective capabilities.

Background: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a devastating gastrointestinal condition mainly affecting premature infants, and gasdermin D (GSDMD) has emerged as a molecule of interest due to its pivotal role in the inflammatory process called pyroptosis in NEC pathogenesis. The aim of this study is to examine the potential of GSDMD and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) as early diagnostic biomarkers for NEC., Methods: We examined 207 infants with clinical symptoms of NEC admitted to our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) between December 2023 and June 2024. After excluding those with congenital gastrointestinal diseases and other factors, 180 infants were included in the study. Among these, 59 were confirmed to have NEC according to Bell Stage II criteria, and 56 matched controls were selected through propensity score matching (PSM). Blood samples were analyzed for GSDMD expression using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and for IL-1β levels using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)., Results: Patients with NEC exhibited significantly elevated levels of GSDMD (18.46±8.58) and IL-1β (9.05±3.42) compared to controls. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis indicated that GSDMD had a higher predictive value for NEC with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.83 than IL-1β (AUC 0.77). Clinical symptoms such as fatigue, abdominal distention, and reduced bowel sounds were significantly more common in patients with NEC. Poor interfacial quality and low refractive index contrast (Δ n ) are critical challenges for the development of high-performance one-dimensional photonic crystals (1DPhCs) via solution methods that impede their optical efficiency. Herein, we introduce an innovative approach by hybridizing hollow SiO 2 with poly(vinyl alcohol), referred to as PHS, followed by alternate assembly with TiO 2 via spin-coating, achieving a 1DPhC with Δ n = 0.76 at the wavelength of 550 nm. This method circumvents the need for high-temperature treatment and complex curing conditions, resulting in a 1DPhC with superior interfacial and optical characteristics. By adjusting the thickness of the PHS layers, we can finely tune the reflectance spectrum, attaining over 99% reflectance at the photonic band gap. Furthermore, 1DPhC demonstrates excellent adhesion to polycarbonate substrates and retains its optimal optical performance even after rigorous environmental testing, including hygrothermal cycles, exposure to hot water, friction, and solvent sonication. This research paves the way for the facile fabrication of high-performance 1DPhCs under mild conditions, offering new perspectives for photonic material processing.

Aerogels with 3D porous structures have been attracting increasing attention among functional materials due to their advantages of being lightweight and high specific surface area. Precise control of the porous structure of aerogel is essential to improve its performance. In this work, polylactic acid (PLA) aerogels with distinctly different microstructures were fabricated by precisely controlling the phase separation behavior of the ternary solution system. Rheological and theoretical analyses have revealed that the interactions between polymer molecules, solvents and non-solvents play a crucial role in determining the nucleation and growth of poor olymer and rich polymer phases. By adjusting the non-solvent type and the solution composition, aerogels with spider network structure, bead-like connected microsphere structure, and cluster petal structure were obtained. Ideal spinodal phase separation conditions were obtained to produce aerogels with a homogeneous fiber network structure. The optimum PLA aerogel achieved an extremely porosity of 96 % and a high specific surface area of 114 m 2 /g, which rendered it with excellent triboelectric generation performance. Parkinson's disease (PD) is the commonest neurodegenerative disorder. It reduces motor and cognitive function in patients. Vinpocetine (Vinp) has the effects of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, and could improve cognitive function in patients. This study was aimed to investigating the therapeutic effects of Vinp on dyskinesia in a 6-Hydroxydopamine hydrobromide (6-OHDA)-induced PD rat model. We constructed a PD rat model by injecting 6-OHDA, and intervened with Vinp for 7 days. The motor function of the rats was evaluated by an open-field test and rotation test. Besides, H&E staining was applied to observe the changes of dopaminergic neurons in the striatum. The levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in the rat striatum were detected. We assessed the impact of Vinp on α-synuclein (α-Syn) and Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway-related molecules by western blot and qRT-PCR. Rats in the PD group showed reduced horizontal movement frequency and number of squares crossed, increased contact time and rotation frequency, and reduced number of dopaminergic neurons accompanied by severe morphological damage. Vinp treatment increased the horizontal movement frequency and number of squares crossed, reduced the contact time, and rotation frequency in PD rats. Also, Vinp downregulated α-Syn protein expression and MDA level, while upregulated SOD activity in the striatum of PD rats. Furthermore, Vinp treatment activated the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway in the striatum of PD rats. In conclusion, Vinp improved the dyskinesia in 6-OHDA-induced PD rats by alleviating oxidative stress, and these effects may be associated with activating the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway., (© 2023 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Harvesting electrical energy from water and moisture has emerged as a novel ecofriendly energy conversion technology. Herein, a multifunctional asymmetric polyaniline/carbon nanotubes/poly(vinyl alcohol) (APCP) that can produce electric energy from both saline water and moisture and generate fresh water simultaneously is developed. The constructed APCP possesses a negatively charged porous structure that allows continuous generation of protons and ion diffusion through the material, and a hydrophilicity-hydrophobic interface which results in a constant potential difference and sustainable output. A single APCP can maintain stable output for over 130 h and preserve a high voltage of 0.61 V, current of 81 µA, and power density of 82.4 µW cm -3 with 0.15 cm 3 unit size in the water-induced electricity generation process. When harvesting moisture energy, the APCP creates dry-wet asymmetries and triggers the spontaneous development of electrical double layer with a current density of 1.25 mA cm -3 , sufficient to power small electronics. A device consisting of four APCP can generate stable electricity of 3.35 V and produce clean water with an evaporation rate of 2.06 kg m -2  h -1 simultaneously. Introduction: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are recognized as a leading cause of nonfatal injuries in construction, but no review of existing studies has systematically analyzed and visualized the trends of WMSDs among construction workers. The current science mapping-based review summarized research published between 2000 and 2021 related to WMSDs among construction workers through co-word, co-author, and citation analysis., Method: A total of 63 bibliographic records retrieved from the Scopus database were analyzed., Results: The results identified influential authors with high impacts in this research domain. Moreover, the results indicated that MSDs, ergonomics, and construction not only had the highest occurrence of been studied, but also the highest impact in terms of total link strength. In addition, the most significant contributions to research relating to WMSDs among construction workers have originated primarily from the United States, Hong Kong, and Canada. Furthermore, a follow-up in-depth qualitative discussion was conducted to focus on summarizing mainstream research topics, identifying existing research gaps, and proposing directions for future studies., Conclusions: This review provides an in-depth understanding of related research on WMSDs among construction workers and proposes the emerging trends in this research field., (Copyright © 2023 National Safety Council and Elsevier Ltd. Objective: To investigate the clinicopathological features, treatment and prognosis of maxillofacial neuroendocrine carcinoma. Methods: A total of 11 patients with maxillofacial neuroendocrine carcinoma diagnosed in the Department of Pathology of The First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University from December 2010 to July 2022 were retrospectively enrolled, including 8 males and 3 females, aged (65.2±9.5) years (ranged from 49 to 87 years), with a disease course of 0.5 to 6.0 months. The clinicopathological data including head and neck CT, MRI and treatment methods were analyzed. Results: Submandibular gland and maxilla were involved in 3 cases, parapharynx in 2 cases, and face, tongue root and soft palate in 1 case respectively. Clinically, the initial symptom is a rapidly growing painless or tender mass, which may be accompanied by restricted mouth opening, dysphagia, and local numbness after invasion of masticatory muscles and nerves. The tumors were all invasive and low-density, with unclear boundaries from the surrounding tissues. Among the patients, 9 received surgical treatment, and 5 received adjuvant treatment after surgery (2 received chemotherapy, 3 received radiotherapy+chemotherapy). According to the 5th edition of the World Health Organization classification of head and neck tumors in 2022, there were 1 case (1/11) with poorly differentiated large cells and 10 cases (10/11) with poorly differentiated small cells. Histologically, the macrocell type is composed of large cells with rough chromatin, obvious vacuolar nucleolus, protruding nucleolus, and necrosis. The small cell type is dominated by small blue round cells with neuroendocrine characteristics, with active growth and multifocal necrosis. Immunohistochemical staining showed that cytokeratin (CK), epithelial membrane antigen (EMA) and synaptophysin (Syn) were diffusively expressed, 10 cases expressed CD56, 8 cases expressed p63, 6 cases expressed weakly punctated chromograin-A (CgA), and S-100 was not expressed. The Ki-67 index ranges from 20 to 90 percent. By the end of follow-up (0.5 to 127.0 months), 3 patients were alive, and the mean progression-free survival (21.0 months) of postoperative chemoradiotherapy patients was significantly longer than that of surgery and/or chemotherapy alone (3.3 months). Conclusions: Maxillofacial neuroendocrine carcinoma is characterized by low differentiation of small cells, high degree of malignancy and poor prognosis. Radical surgery combined with chemoradiotherapy has better local control effect.

In recent years, with the appearance of the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), there has been a wave of research on small energy harvesting devices and self-powered wearable electronics. Hydrogels-as conductive materials with excellent tensile properties-have been widely focused on by researchers, which encouraged the development of the hydrogel-based TENGs (H-TENGs) that use the hydrogel as an electrode. Due to the great feasibility of adjusting the conductivity and mechanical property as well as the microstructure of the hydrogels, many H-TENGs with excellent performance have emerged, some of which are capable of excellent outputting ability with an output voltage of 992 V, and self-healing performance which can spontaneously heal within 1 min without any external stimuli. Although there are numerous studies on H-TENGs with excellent performance, a comprehensive review paper that systematically correlates hydrogels' properties to TENGs is still absent. Therefore, in this review, we aim to provide a panoramic overview of the working principle as well as the preparation strategies that significantly affect the properties of H-TENGs. We review hydrogel classification categories such as their network composition and their potential applications on sensing and energy harvesting, and in biomedical fields. Moreover, the challenges faced by the H-TENGs are also discussed, and relative future development of the H-TENGs are also provided to address them. The booming growth of H-TENGs not only broadens the applications of hydrogels into new areas, but also provides a novel alternative for the sustainable power sources.

Proliferation in telecommunications and integrated/intelligent devices entails an intense concern for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and versatility. It remains an activated passion to launch infusive EMI shielding materials integrated with self-powered peculiarities. Herein, a double-layered MXene/polylactic acid (PLA) fabric resonance cavity (D-MPF-RC) comprised of two MXene/PLA fabrics (MPFs) with alternating MXene and PLA structures that are separated by a poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) frame is developed. The D-MPF-RC achieved 48.5 and 74.8% improvement in SE T and SE A , and 24.6% reduction in SE R by introducing the double-layered structure and increasing the resonance cavity (RC) distance without varying the material composition and cost. A high shielding efficiency (SE) of 92.3 dB was obtained at an RC distance of 6 mm owing to the synergetic effects of multiple reflections and destructive EM wave interference. The tribopolarity difference between PLA and MXene and the RC structure made the D-MPF-RC a readily available triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) that could convert mechanical energy into electricity. The D-MPF-RC TENG demonstrated an open-circuit voltage of 88 V and achieved a peak power density of 35.4 mW m -2 on a 6.6 MΩ external resistor, which made it possible to charge capacitors and serve as a self-powered tactile sensor. This report offers new insights into the design of high-performance EMI shielding shields with a resonance cavity and proposes a feasible pathway to integrate them with energy harvesting capabilities.

Solar steam generation is an efficient way of harvesting solar energy for water purification. Developing a versatile solar absorber with salt resistance and the capability to purify an oil-in-water emulsion is a grand challenge. Herein, a polypropylene (PP) nonwoven fabric-based photothermal absorber is fabricated by the combination of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), polypyrrole (PPy), and a fluorinated hydrophobic coating in a layer-by-layer approach. The specially designed architecture displays a hierarchical microstructure and Janus wetting properties, facilitating solar absorption and heat generation on the evaporation surface, and can effectively prevent salt crystallization. The water layer formed on the superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic bottom surface could repel oil droplets and form a channel to advect concentrated salt back into bulk water, which enabled high purity separation of an oil-in-water emulsion and continuous desalinization of seawater without the reduction of the evaporation rate. As a result, the solar absorber can achieve a remarkable evaporation rate of 1.61 kg m -2 h -1 and an energy efficiency of 91.2% under 1 sun irradiation and shows extraordinary performance in the purification of contaminated wastewater (over 99.8% purity). The strategy proposed provides a pathway for developing versatile high-performance solar absorbers for the sustainable treatment of saline water, wastewater, and oil-containing water.

Reciprocating motion is a widely existing form of mechanical motion in the natural environment. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) that work in sliding mode are ideal for harnessing large-distance reciprocating motion, and their energy conversion efficiency could be greatly enhanced by adding springs to them. Herein, we focused on investigating the design and optimization principles of sliding mode TENGs by analyzing the effects of spring parameters and vibration frequency on the triboelectric output performance of typical cylindrical sliding TENGs (CS-TENGs). Experimental study and finite elemental analysis were carried out based on a CS-TENG model assembled using a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) film as the negative layer and an aluminum film as the positive layer. The energy output was found to be mainly affected by the change of relative displacement between the two friction layers, rather than the reactive force applied by the springs or the velocity of the sliding motion. However, the frequency of the output signals could be improved when the stiffness coefficient of the springs and the CS-TENG vibration frequency were increased. This study provides valuable directions for the design and optimization of sliding mode TENGs containing springs, and will motivate in-depth research on the fundamental principles of TENG operation.

Fabric-based triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are promising candidates as wearable energy-harvesting devices and self-powered sensors. Booting the power generation performance is an eternal pursuit for TENGs. Herein, an efficient approach was proposed to enhance the triboelectric performance of commercial velvet fabric by enriching the fiber surface with hierarchical structures and amide bonds through chemical grafting of carbon nanotube (CNT) and poly(ethylenimine) (PEI) via a polyamidation reaction. With an optimized modifier concentration, the fabric-based TENG easily achieved over 10 times improvement in output voltage and current at a low modifier content of less than 1 wt %. The modified-fabric-based TENG was fully washable and exhibited excellent robustness and long-term stability. With a maximum power density of 3.2 W/m 2 achieved on a 5 × 10 6 Ω external resistor, the TENG was able to serve as a power source for various small electronics such as pedometer, digital watch, calculator, and digital timer. In addition, the TENG demonstrated capability in self-powered tactile and pressure sensing and promising potential in human-computer interface applications. The approach proposed provides a feasible path for boosting the triboelectric performance of fabric-based TENGs and gives insights into the design of fabric-based nanogenerators and smart textiles.

High-performance low-cost superhydrophobic sponges are desired for selective recycling of leaking oils from open water. Herein, an ingenious method is proposed to fabricate an ultrathin superhydrophobic coating layer on a commercial sponge. The coating layer is composed of a shish-kebab-structured porous ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) film that is fabricated from a UHMWPE/xylene solution by shear flow-induced crystallization. A strong relationship between the shish-kebab crystallite morphology and the superwetting performance is confirmed. The UHMWPE coating layer fabricated at a 900 rpm rotation rate possesses a lamellae size of 95.1 nm and a lamellae distance of 27.4 nm, which lead to a high water contact angle of 157° and a low contact angle hysteresis of 4.5°. The UHMWPE layer prepared in 4 min of treatment is thick enough to prevent the intrusion of water even under vacuum and remain superoleophilic. The developed UHMWPE-coated sponge (UCS) exhibited a high absorption capability of 70-191 g/g toward various oils and solvents, which is comparable with the neat melamine sponge. Its excellent compressibility and durability enabled fast recovery of absorbed oil with a high recovery rate (over 85%) by mechanical squeezing. The UCS could be assembled into small devices to selectively collect oil from open water and a water/oil mixture using a pump, which manifests its promising practical applicability. Apart from these extraordinary properties, the approach developed has the lowest material cost and the shortest processing time hitherto.

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) with high transparency and stretchability are desired for invisible and adaptable energy harvesting and sensing. Hydrogel-based TENGs (H-TENG) have shown promising attributes toward flexible and transparent devices. However, the effect of hydrogel property on the triboelectric performance of H-TENG is rarely investigated. Herein, dual-network hydrogels composed of dual-cross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and sodium alginate (SA) were synthesized and used as ionic electrodes in H-TENGs. The elasticity of the hydrogel was controlled by varying the concentration of SA, and the distinct influence of hydrogel viscoelastic property on H-TENG performance was verified for the first time. By tuning the conductivity and viscoelasticity of PVA/SA hydrogel, the optimum H-TENG exhibited high transparency (over 90%) and stretchability (over 250%) and peak output voltage and current of 203.4 V and 17.6 μA, respectively. A specially designed polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) bag effectively prevents hydrogel dehydration and maintains a stable output in continuous operation. The H-TENG achieved a power density of 0.98 W/m 2 on a 4.7 MΩ external resistor. The H-TENG could easily light 240 green and blue LEDs simultaneously and demonstrated capability to power small electronics, such as a digital timer and pedometer. This study provides insights into the influence of hydrogel property on H-TENG performance and gives guidance for designing and fabricating highly stretchable and transparent TENGs.

Delamination of coating layer from polymer substrate limits the lifetime and functionality of the protective films. Silicone coating is especially vulnerable to photo irradiation, hydrothermal degradation, and mechanical deformation due to the low interfacial adhesion and mechanical robustness. Herein, an ingenious approach is developed to fabricate ultrastable and durable silicone coating on polycarbonate (PC) substrate through well-controlled nanoscale interfacial engineering. A nanopillar array is fabricated on the PC surface by vacuum-assisted hot embossing using anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates. Significant improvement in interfacial shear strength (ISS) is achieved for the silicone coating on the nanostructured PC surface. The delamination mechanism can be controlled by tuning the nanopillar size, and the maximum ISS of 9.9 MPa was reached on a surface with a nanopillar diameter of 320 nm. Attributed to the increased interfacial area and mechanical interlocking structure, the nanostructured interface can effectively dissipate interfacial stress and prevent cracking; therefore, maintaining excellent transparency and performance in the harsh environment. The coating exhibits extraordinary stability and durability when subjected to UV irradiation for 168 h, hydrothermal aging for 120 h, mechanical bending for 1000 cycles, and even surface damage. Thus, the tough silicone coating on polymer substrate realized by nanoscale interfacial engineering is a promising technique for highly stable and durable transparent surface protection.

A mismatch of mechanical properties and a high rate of thromboses are two critical challenges of creating viable artificial small-diameter vascular grafts (SDVGs). Herein, we propose a method to fabricate wavy multicomponent vascular grafts (WMVGs) via electrospinning using an assembled rotating collector. The WMVGs consisted of a wavy silk/poly(lactic acid) (PLA) inner layer and a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) outer layer, which mimic the structures and properties of collagen and elastin in native blood vessels, respectively. Attributed to the wavy structure and the combination of rigid silk/PLA and elastic TPU biomaterials, WMVGs are capable of mimicking the nonlinear tensile stress-strain relationship and "toe region" of native blood vessels. In addition, they have sufficient mechanical strength to meet implantation requirements in terms of tensile strength, suture retention, and burst pressure. Further modification of silk/PLA fibers with dopamine and heparin gave the grafts antithrombogenic properties and greatly enhanced endothelial cell affinities. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) cultured on modified silk/PLA showed high viability, high proliferation rate, and favorable cell-substrate interactions. Moreover, HUVECs were able to fully cover and freely migrate upward on the lumen of the modified WMVGs without needing a special circulation bioreactor. Therefore, the modified WMVGs possessed biomimetic properties, antithrombogenicity, and enhanced endothelialization, making them a promising candidate for SDVGs. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Mimicking the mechanical properties of native tissue is an important requirement for tissue engineering scaffolds. Blood vessels are subject to repetitive dilation and contraction and possess a special nonlinear mechanical property due to their triple-layered structure. Fabrication of vascular grafts consisting of bioresorbable materials with biomimetic mechanical properties is an urgent demand, as well as a critical challenge. Inspired by the configuration and function of collagen and elastin in native blood vessels, a new type of triple-layered vascular graft (TLVG) was developed in this study. The TLVGs were composed of braided silk as the inner layer, polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogel as the middle layer, and electrospun thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) as the outer layer. The woven-structured silk fibers were able to mimic the properties of the loosely distributed collagen fibers, while the highly elastic PAM hydrogel and TPU nanofibers mimicked the elasticity of elastin in the blood vessel. With this specially designed microstructure and combination of rigid and elastic materials, the TLVGs successfully mimicked the nonlinear mechanical property of native blood vessels. Moreover, TLVGs possess sufficient suture retention strength for surgical implantation. The introduction of a PAM hydrogel layer effectively solved the leaking issue for conventional porous vascular grafts and greatly enhanced the burst pressure. In addition, all materials used have high biocompatibility to human endothelial cells, which indicates that the developed TLVGs have high potential to be used as readily available vascular grafts., (Copyright © 2018. The severe water contamination caused by oil leakage is calling for low-cost and high-performance absorbent materials for selective oil removal. In this study, a scalable green method was proposed to produce polypropylene (PP)/poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) composite foams via conventional processing techniques including twin-screw extrusion and supercritical carbon dioxide foaming. To produce the superhydrophobic foam, micro- and nanosized PTFE particles were melt blended with PP and subsequently foamed. Ascribed to the nanofibrillation of microsized PTFE during processing, the fabricated foam exhibited a special highly porous structure with PTFE nanofibrils and nanoparticles uniformly distributed on the pore surfaces within the PP matrix, which resulted in a remarkably high water contact angle of 156.8° and a low contact angle hysteresis of 1.9°. Unlike traditional surface-modified superhydrophobic absorbers, the foams prepared are entirely superhydrophobic, which means that they remain superhydrophobic when being fractured or cut. Moreover, they are highly durable and maintained the superhydrophobicity when subjected to ultrasonication and mechanical sanding. When used in selective oil absorption, the durable foams exhibited excellent absorption efficiency and high stability in repetitive and long-term use. These advantages make the PP/PTFE foam a promising superabsorbent material for water remediation.

Boosting power generation performance while employing economical and biocompatible materials is an ongoing direction in the field of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs). Here, highly porous, biocompatible, cellulose nanofibril (CNF) composite-based TENGs are developed through an environmentally friendly freeze-drying approach. High tribopositivity materials, including silica fiber, human hair, and rabbit fur, are used as fillers in composite TENG fabrication for the first time to enhance the triboelectric output performance. Among them, a CNF/rabbit fur composite aerogel-based TENG offers the optimum energy generation ability with a high power density of 3.4 W m-2 achieved on a 4.7 MΩ load at a pressure of 30 kPa. Owing to the high output, the porous composite TENG exhibits an excellent energy harvesting performance and high sensitivity in detecting ultralight forces and monitoring human motion when used as a self-powered sensor. This work introduces a new class of highly porous composite TENGs that integrate biocompatibility, low cost, flexibility, high energy generation performance, and sensing sensitivity, as well as providing new strategies for high performance TENG design and fabrication.

Mimicking the mechanical properties of native tissues is a critical criterion for an ideal tissue engineering scaffold. However, most biodegradable synthetic materials, including polyester-based polyurethanes (PUs), consist of rigid polyester chains and have high crystallinity. They typically lack the elasticity of most human tissues. In this study, a new type of biodegradable PU with excellent elasticity was synthesized based on the controlled crosslinking of poly(ester ether) triblock copolymer diols and polycaprolactone (PCL) triols using urethane linkages. Three-dimensional (3D) porous scaffolds with a defined geometry, tunable microstructures, and adjustable mechanical properties were synthesized in situ using an isocyanate-ended copolymer, a tri-armed PCL, and a chain extender. The mechanical properties of the scaffolds can be easily tuned by changing the ratio of reactants, varying the solution concentration, or using a porogen. Notably, all of these scaffolds, although mostly made of rigid PCL chains, showed remarkable elasticity and cyclical properties. With an optimized molecular design, a maximum recovery rate of 99.8% was achieved. This was because the copolymer provided molecular flexibility while the long chain crosslinking of PCL triol hindered crystallization, thus making the PU behave like an amorphous elastic material. Moreover, the in vitro cell culture of 3T3 fibroblasts and MG63 osteoblast-like cells confirmed the biocompatibility of these PU scaffolds and revealed that scaffolds with different stiffnesses can stimulate the proliferation of different types of cells. All of these attributes make PU scaffolds extremely suitable for the regeneration of tissues that experience dynamic loading.

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have been attracting a tremendous amount of attention since their discovery in 2012. Finding new means to enhance energy output is an ongoing pursuit. Herein, we introduce a new type of high-performance TENG composed of highly porous polyamide (PA) nanofiber mats and polyimide aerogel films. We have demonstrated that the thickness of the porous triboelectric materials, which is attained by stacking multiple layers of triboelectric materials, has a profound effect on the triboelectric output performance of TENGs. The triboelectric output increased when PA increased from one layer to six layers. However, it decreased when PA was further increased to 12 layers. With an optimum material thickness, a TENG with only a 2 cm 2 effective device size achieved a high output voltage of 115 V and a current of 9.5 μA under a small compressive pressure (30 kPa). A peak power density of 1.84 W/m 2 was achieved on a 4.7 MΩ external load. The TENG was able to light 60 light-emitting diodes easily and quickly charge capacitors with different capacitance to 6 V, indicating an outstanding energy harvesting ability. In addition, the performance of multiple TENGs connected in different ways, as well as the performance of TENGs in resistive/inductive/capacitive circuits, were investigated. These findings provide new insight into the working principles of TENGs in complex circuits.

A novel fluorescent conjugated polymer (poly(2-amino-N-(2-((4-ethynylphenyl) ethynyl) phenyl)-5-guanidinopentanamide)-1,4-phenylethynylene-1,4-phenyleneethynylene, PPE-Arg) was synthesized in this paper. We found that PPE-Arg could be quenched by picric acid (PA). Photoinduced electron transfer (PET) mechanism can be used to describe the fluorescence quenching of PPE-Arg. It could be speculated that the photo-induced electrons may be transferred from PPE-Arg to nitroaromatic explosives. In this paper, the experiment conditions and detection performance of PPE-Arg were systematically studied. The experiment results demonstrate PPE-Arg as a sensor for PA has a good linear range from 5 × 10 -7 to 6 × 10 -5 mol L -1 with the calculated limit of detection (LOD) to be 1.0 × 10 -7 mol L -1 . Meanwhile, reaction time between PPE-Arg and PA is less than 1 min. Integrating multifunctionality such as adhesiveness, stretchability, and self-healing ability on a single hydrogel has been a challenge and is a highly desired development for various applications including electronic skin, wound dressings, and wearable devices. In this study, a novel hydrogel was synthesized by incorporating polydopamine-coated talc (PDA-talc) nanoflakes into a polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogel inspired by the natural mussel adhesive mechanism. Dopamine molecules were intercalated into talc and oxidized, which enhanced the dispersion of talc and preserved catechol groups in the hydrogel. The resulting dopamine-talc-PAM (DTPAM) hydrogel showed a remarkable stretchability, with over 1000% extension and a recovery rate over 99%. It also displayed strong adhesiveness to various substrates, including human skin, and the adhesion strength surpassed that of commercial double-sided tape and glue sticks, even as the hydrogel dehydrated over time. Moreover, the DTPAM hydrogel could rapidly self-heal and regain its mechanical properties without needing any external stimuli. It showed excellent biocompatibility and improved cell affinity to human fibroblasts compared to the PAM hydrogel. When used as a strain sensor, the DTPAM hydrogel showed high sensitivity, with a gauge factor of 0.693 at 1000% strain, and was capable of monitoring various human motions such as the bending of a finger, knee, or elbow and taking a deep breath. Therefore, this hydrogel displays favorable attributes and is highly suitable for use in human-friendly biological devices.

When used as small-diameter vascular grafts (SDVGs), synthetic biomedical materials like polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) may induce thrombosis and intimal hyperplasia due to the lack of an endothelial cell layer. Modification of the PTFE in an aqueous solution is difficult because of its hydrophobicity. Herein, aiming to simultaneously promote endothelial cell affinity and antithrombogenicity, a mussel-inspired modification approach was employed to enable the grafting of various bioactive molecules like RGD and heparin. This approach involves a series of pragmatic steps including oxygen plasma treatment, dopamine (DA) coating, polyethylenimine (PEI) grafting, and RGD or RGD/heparin immobilization. Successful modification in each step was verified via Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Plasma treatment increased the hydrophilicity of PTFE, thereby allowing it to be efficiently coated with dopamine. Grafting of dopamine, RGD, and heparin led to an increase in surface roughness and a decrease in water contact angle due to increased surface energy. Platelet adhesion increased after dopamine and RGD modification, but it dramatically decreased when heparin was introduced. All of these modifications, especially the incorporation of RGD, showed favorable effects on endothelial cell attachment, viability, and proliferation. Due to strong cell-substrate interactions between endothelial cells and RGD, the RGD/heparin-grafted PTFE demonstrated high endothelial cell affinity. This facile modification method is highly suitable for all hydrophobic surfaces and provides a promising technique for SDVG modification to stimulate fast endothelialization and effective antithrombosis.

A new electrospinning approach for fabricating vascular grafts with a layered, circumferentially aligned, and micro-wavy fibrous structure similar to natural elastic tissues has been developed. The customized electrospinning collector was able to generate wavy fibers using the dynamic "jump rope" collecting process, which also solved the sample removal problem for mandrel-type collectors. In this study, natural silk fibroin and synthetic thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) were combined at different weight ratios to produce hybrid small-diameter vascular grafts. The purpose of combining these two materials was to leverage the bioactivity and tunable mechanical properties of these natural and synthetic materials. Results showed that the electrospun fiber morphology was highly influenced by the material compositions and solvents employed. All of the TPU/fibroin hybrid grafts had mechanical properties comparable to natural blood vessels. The circumferentially aligned and wavy biomimetic configuration provided the grafts with a sufficient toe region and the capacity for long-term usage under repeated dilatation and contraction. The success of blood vessel transplants with vascular scaffolds (VSs) highly depends on their structure and mechanical properties. The fabrication of small diameter vascular scaffolds (SDVSs) mimicking the properties of native blood vessels has been a challenge. Herein, we propose a facile method to fabricate thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)/polycaprolactone (PCL) hybrid SDVSs via electrospinning using a modified rotating collector. By varying the ratio between the TPU and the PCL, and changing the electrospinning volume, SDVSs with a wavy configuration and different properties could be obtained. Detailed investigation revealed that certain TPU/PCL hybrid SDVSs closely resembled the mechanical behaviors of blood vessels due to the presence of a wavy region and the combination of flexible TPU and rigid PCL, which mimicked the properties of elastin and collagen in blood vessels. The fabricated TPU/PCL SDVSs achieved lumen diameters of 1-3mm, wall thicknesses of 100-570µm, circumferential moduli of 1-6MPa, ultimate strengths of 2-8MPa, over 250% elongation-at-break values, toe regions of 5.3-9.4%, high recoverability, and compliances close to those of human veins. Moreover, these TPU/PCL SDVSs possessed sufficient suture retention strength and burst pressure to fulfill transplantation requirements and maintain normal blood flow. Human endothelial cell culture revealed good biocompatibility of the scaffolds, and cells were able to grow on the inner surface of the tubular scaffolds, indicating promising prospects for use as tissue-engineered vascular grafts., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Superwettable materials have gained tremendous attention because of their special wetting abilities. The key to obtaining and tuning superwettability is to precisely control the interfacial microstructures and surface energies of materials. Herein, we propose a novel approach to controlling the superwettability of three-dimensional foams. The surface microstructure was manipulated by the layer-by-layer covalent grafting of multidimensional nanoparticles (e.g., silica, carbon nanotubes, and graphene oxide), and the surface energy was tailored by grafting chemicals with different functional groups. This grafting approach improved the mechanical performance, reduced particle loading, and prevented particle disassociation, thereby increasing the absorption capacity and durability of the functionalized foams. More importantly, superhydrophobic/superoleophilic foams were obtained after heptanol grafting. They showed water contact angles of 153° in air and 158° in oil, an absorption capacity 113 times their weight gain, and a remarkable flux of 32.6 L m -2 s -1 for the separation of oil from water driven by gravity. Polydopamine grafting resulted in superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic foams that had an oil contact angle of 152° under water and a high flux of 19.3 L m -2 s -1 for the separation of water from oil. Thus, this study offers not only intelligent materials for versatile oil/water separation but also a profound approach for engineering high-performance superwettable materials.

A novel hollow fiber membranes-based dynamic liquid-liquid micro-extraction (HF-DLLME) coupled with HPLC-UV detection has been developed for the residue analysis of tetracyclines in milk samples without deproteinization and degreasing. The influences of experimental parameters were investigated and optimized. The method showed a good performance. The limits of detection (LOD) are in the range of 0.95-3.6μg/L. The recoveries in spiked samples range from 92.38 to 107.3%. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) are lower than 8.66%. Background: The primary objective of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of using acupressure as an adjunctive therapy to sodium valproate (SV) combined with acupressure (ASV) on the prevention of chronic migraine with aura (CMA)., Methods: A total of 98 patients with CMA were randomly divided into an intervention group and a control group, with 49 patients in each group. The patients in the intervention group received ASV, while the participants in the control group received SV alone. The primary outcome was measured by the numeric rating scale (NRS). The secondary outcomes including frequency of migraine attacks, the times of using analgesics, and quality of life, measured by the short-form 36 Health Survey Scale (SF-36) score. In addition, adverse events (AEs) were also recorded throughout the trial. The outcomes were measured at the end of the 8-week treatment, and 4-week follow-up., Results: After the 8-week treatment and 4-week follow-up, ASV efficacy was not greater than that of SV alone regarding pain relief, as measured using the NRS, and frequency of migraine attacks, consumption of analgesics, and quality of life, as measured using the SF-36. However, ASV can significantly reduce the nausea when compared with SV (P = .04)., Conclusion: The present results indicate that ASV can decrease migraine-related nausea during treatment, but cannot relieve pain or enhance quality of life in patients with CMA.

Biodegradable synthetic polymers have been widely used as tissue engineering scaffold materials. Even though they have shown excellent biocompatibility, they have failed to resemble the low stiffness and high elasticity of soft tissues because of the presence of massive rigid ester bonds. Herein, we synthesized a new thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer (CTC-PU(BET)) using poly ester ether triblock copolymer (polycaprolactone-block-polytetrahydrofuran-block-polycaprolactone triblock copolymer, PCTC) as the soft segment, aliphatic diisocyanate (hexamethylene diisocyanate, HDI) as the hard segment, and degradable diol (bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate, BET) as the chain extender. PCTC inhibited crystallization and reduced the melting temperature of CTC-PU(BET), and BET dramatically enhanced the thermal decomposition and hydrolytic degradation rate when compared with conventional polyester-based biodegradable TPUs. The CTC-PU(BET) synthesized in this study possessed a low tensile modulus and tensile strength of 2.2 MPa and 1.3 MPa, respectively, and an elongation-at-break over 700%. Meanwhile, it maintained a 95.3% recovery rate and 90% resilience over ten cycles of loading and unloading. In addition, the TPU could be electrospun into both random and aligned fibrous scaffolds consisting of major microfibers and nanobranches. 3T3 fibroblast cell culture confirmed that these scaffolds outperformed the conventional biodegradable TPU scaffolds in terms of substrate-cellular interactions and cell proliferation. Considering the advantages of this TPU, such as ease of synthesis, low cost, low stiffness, high elasticity, controllable degradation rate, ease of processability, and excellent biocompatibility, it has great prospects to be used as a tissue engineering scaffold material for soft tissue regeneration.

Objective: To explore the differences of NKX2.5 and TBX5 gene mutations between in vitro fertilization (IVF) children with congenital heart disease (CHD) and naturally conceived children with CHD., Methods: Blood samples from 68 IVF children with CHD and 98 naturally conceived children with CHD were collected. The mutations in coding regions 1 and 2 of the NKX2.5 gene, and coding regions 4, 5, and 8 of the TBX5 gene were examined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and DNA sequencing., Results: An A-to-G mutation at nucleotide 63 (c.63A>G) in coding region 1 of the NKX2.5 gene was found in both IVF and naturally conceived children with CHD. There were no significant differences in genotype and allele frequencies at c.63A>G locus of the NKX2.5 gene between the two groups. No mutations were detected in coding region 2 of the NKX2.5 gene and coding regions 4, 5 and 8 of the TBX5 gene., Conclusions: There is no difference in NKX2.5 and TBX5 gene mutations between IVF and naturally conceived children with CHD. Therefore, it is presumed that assisted reproductive technology may not lead to mutations in the NKX2.5 and TBX5 genes.

In this work, three-dimensional poly(caprolactone) (PCL) tissue engineering scaffolds were prepared by co-extrusion and gas foaming. Biocompatible hydroxyapatite (HA) and halloysite nanotubes (HNT) were added to the polymer matrix to enhance the mechanical properties and bioactivity of the composite scaffolds. The effects of HA and HNT on the rheological behavior, microstructure, and mechanical properties of the composite scaffolds were systematically compared. It was found that the HNT improved viscosity more significantly than HA, and reduced the pore size of scaffolds, while the mechanical performance of PCL/HNT scaffolds was higher than PCL/HA scaffolds with the same filler content. Human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) were used as the cell model to compare the biological properties of two composite scaffolds. The results demonstrated that cells could survive on all scaffolds, and showed a more flourishing living state on the composite scaffolds. The cell differentiation for 5% HA and 1% HNT scaffolds were significantly higher than other scaffolds, while the differentiation of 5% HNT scaffolds was lower than that of 1% HNT scaffolds mainly because of the reduced pore size and pore interconnectivity. Therefore, this study suggested that, with proper filler content and control of microstructure through processing, HNT could be a suitable substitute for HA for bone tissue engineering to reduce the cost and improve mechanical performance., (Copyright © 2016. Thermally responsive shape memory polymers have promising applications in many fields, especially in biomedical areas. In this study, a simple method was purposed to prepare thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)/poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) blends that possess shape memory attributes. TPU and PCL were melt compounded via a twin-screw extruder and injection molded at various ratios. Multiple test methods were used to characterize their shape memory properties and reveal the underling mechanism. The blends containing 25% TPU and 75% PCL possessed the best shape memory properties as indicated by a 98% shape fixing ratio and 90% shape recovery ratio. This was attributed to the hybrid crystalline and amorphous regions of PCL and TPU. We also found that PCL and TPU had good miscibility and that the PCL domain in TPU25% had higher crystallinity than neat PCL. The crystalline region in TPU25% could deform and maintain its temporary shape when stretched, which contributed to its high shape fixing attribute, while the rubbery TPU region assisted in the recovery of the sample upon heating by releasing the deformation energy stored. Moreover, the TPU25% string prepared could knot itself in a hot water bath, indicating a potential for suture applications. Objective: To study the value of combined measurement of intestinal fatty acid-binding protein (I-FABP) and fecal calprotectin (FC) in the diagnosis of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in full-term neonates., Methods: A total of 36 full-term neonates with NEC (case group) and 39 neonates without digestive system diseases (control group) were enrolled as study subjects. ELISA was used to measure the serum I-FABP level and fecal FC level, and the clinical value of I-FABP combined with FC in the diagnosis of NEC was evaluated., Results: The case group had significantly higher I-FABP and FC levels than the control group (P<0.05). In the case group, serum I-FABP level was positively correlated with fecal FC level (r=0.71, P<0.05). In the diagnosis of NEC, I-FABP alone, FC alone, and I-FABP/FC combination had sensitivities of 83.3%, 81.5%, and 79.5%, specificities of 72.5%, 75.8%, and 86.3%, and areas under the ROC curve (AUCs) of 0.82, 0.81, and 0.88. The combined measurement showed significantly higher specificity and AUC than single measurement (P<0.05)., Conclusions: Children with NEC have significant increases in I-FABP and FC levels, and there is a correlation between them. Combined measurement of I-FABP and FC can increase the specificity of the diagnosis of NEC.

Objective: To investigate the effect of advanced maternal age on birth defects and postnatal complications of neonates., Methods: Among the 1 109 neonates who were born at The First People's Hospital of Yunnan Province between January 2014 and December 2015, 536 neonates whose mothers were aged ≥35 years were enrolled as advanced age group and 573 neonates whose mothers were aged <35 years were enrolled as appropriate-age group. The incidences of the comorbidities in pregnancy, fetal intrauterine distress, neonatal birth defects, and postnatal complications were compared between the two groups. A univariate logistic regression analysis was performed to analyze the effect of advanced maternal age on neonatal comorbidities during perinatal period., Results: Compared with the appropriate-age group, the advanced age group had significantly higher rate of caesarean section and incidence rates of multiple birth, gestational diabetes, pregnancy-induced hypertension, in vitro fertilization, and fetal intrauterine distress (P<0.01). The neonates in the advanced age group had a significantly higher incidence rate of cleft lip and palate and a significantly lower rate of skeletal dysplasia than in the appropriate-age group (P<0.05). Advanced maternal age was the risk factor for fetal intrauterine distress (OR=2.27, 95%CI: 1.33-3.88, P=0.003), neonatal resuscitation (OR=1.66, 95%CI: 1.19-2.31, P=0.003), and intracranial hemorrhage (OR=2.70, 95%CI: 1.21-6.04, P=0.02)., Conclusions: The women of maternal advanced age have higher incidence rates of pregnancy comorbidities than those of appropriate age, and the neonates born to the mothers of advanced maternal age have a higher incidence rate of cleft lip and palate. Advanced maternal age may increase the risks of fetal intrauterine distress, neonatal resuscitation, and intracranial hemorrhage.

Although phase separation is a simple method of preparing tissue engineering scaffolds, it suffers from organic solvent residual in the scaffold. Searching for nontoxic solvents and developing effective solvent removal methods are current challenges in scaffold fabrication. In this study, thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) scaffolds containing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) or nanofibrillated cellulose fibers (NFCs) were prepared using low toxicity dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as a solvent. The effects of two solvent removal approaches on the final scaffold morphology were studied. The freeze drying method caused large pores, with small pores on the pore walls, which created connections between the pores. Meanwhile, the leaching and freeze drying method led to interconnected fine pores with smaller pore diameters. The nucleation effect of CNTs and the phase separation behavior of NFCs in the TPU solution resulted in significant differences in the microstructures of the resulting scaffolds. The mechanical performance of the nanocomposite scaffolds with different morphologies was investigated. Generally, the scaffolds with a fine pore structure showed higher compressive properties, and both the CNTs and NFCs improved the compressive properties of the scaffolds, with greater enhancement found in TPU/NFC nanocomposite scaffolds. Soft and hard thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and their blends were electrospun to fabricate nanofibrous scaffolds with various properties in order to investigate the substrate property effects on cellular response. The scaffolds were characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, water contact angle tests, and protein absorption tests. It was found that the hard segment content in the scaffold increased with the hard TPU ratio, which resulted in improved hydrophobicity and decreased over all protein absorption. 3T3 fibroblasts were cultured on those scaffolds to investigate the cellular response. On soft TPU scaffolds, the cells formed were round in shape and aggregated into clusters. However, on hard TPU scaffolds, the cells exhibited a spindle shape and spread out on the scaffolds, indicating preferred cell-substrate interaction. In this work, scaffolds with a shish-kebab (SK) structure formed by poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) nanofibers and chitosan-PCL (CS-PCL) copolymers were prepared via electrospinning and subsequent crystallization for bone tissue engineering applications. The aim of this study was to introduce nanosized topography and the high biocompatibility of chitosan onto PCL nanofibers to enhance cell affinity to PCL scaffolds. CS-PCL copolymers with various ratios were synthesized, and then spontaneously crystallized as kebabs onto the electrospun PCL fibers, which acted as shishes. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results demonstrated that the copolymer with PCL to chitosan ratio of 8.8 could hierarchically decorate the PCL nanofibers and formed well-shaped kebabs on the PCL nanofiber surface. Water contact angle tests and biomimetic activity experiments revealed that the shish-kebab scaffolds with CS-PCL kebabs (PCL-SK(CS-PCL(8.8))) showed enhanced hydrophilicity and mineralization ability compared with smooth PCL and PCL-SK(PCL) shish-kebab scaffolds. Osteoblast-like MG63 cells cultured on the PCL-SK(CS-PCL(8.8)) scaffolds showed optimizing cell attachment, cell viability, and metabolic activity, demonstrating that this kind of scaffold has potential applications in bone tissue engineering.

Fabrication of small diameter vascular grafts plays an important role in vascular tissue engineering. In this study, thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)/graphene oxide (GO) scaffolds were fabricated via electrospinning at different GO contents as potential candidates for small diameter vascular grafts. In terms of mechanical and surface properties, the tensile strength, Young's modulus, and hydrophilicity of the scaffolds increased with an increase of GO content while plasma treatment dramatically improved the scaffold hydrophilicity. Mouse fibroblast (3T3) and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were cultured on the scaffolds separately to study their biocompatibility and potential to be used as vascular grafts. It was found that cell viability for both types of cells, fibroblast proliferation, and HUVEC attachment were the highest at a 0.5wt.% GO loading whereas oxygen plasma treatment also enhanced HUVEC viability and attachment significantly. In addition, the suture retention strength and burst pressure of tubular TPU/GO scaffolds containing 0.5wt.% GO were found to meet the requirements of human blood vessels, and endothelial cells were able to attach to the inner surface of the tubular scaffolds. Platelet adhesion tests using mice blood indicated that vascular scaffolds containing 0.5% GO had low platelet adhesion and activation. Objective: To investigate the survival quality of infants conceived by in vitro fertilization (IVF) and to identify the factors that cause birth defects and neonatal complications in IVF infants., Methods: The study included 150 IVF infants (IVF group) and 200 naturally conceived infants (control group). Indicators such as birth situation, gestational disease, birth defects, and neonatal complications were compared between groups. The influencing factors for birth defects and neonatal complications were analyzed by non-conditional logistic regression analysis., Results: Compared with the control group, the IVF group had increased incidences of twin pregnancy and low birth weight (P<0.01) but decreased average birth weight (P<0.05). In the IVF group, the mother's age was elder, with higher incidence of cesarean section, premature rupture of membranes, and pregnancy complications, as compared with the control group (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in the incidence of birth defects between the two groups (P>0.05). The IVF group had higher incidence rates of low birth weight and neonatal scleroderma (P<0.05), with a longer hospital stay (P<0.01), as compared with the control group. The non-conditional logistic regression analysis indicated that IVF, prematurity, twin pregnancy, and pregnancy complications were risk factors for low birth weight (P<0.05)., Conclusions: There is no significant difference in the incidence of birth defects between IVF and naturally conceived infants. However, IVF infants have higher incidences of twin pregnancy and low birth weight, with a longer hospital stay, as compared with naturally conceived infants. Natural conceiving, avoiding prematurity, twin pregnancy, and pregnancy complications will reduce the incidence of low birth weight.

In this study, parallel-aligned poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) microfibers with a fiber diameter of 1.48±0.42 μm were prepared by electrospinning and modified by oxygen plasma treatment. Next, chitosan nanofibers with a fiber diameter size of 278±98 nm were introduced into the PPC fiber mats by freeze drying. Morphological analyses showed that the PPC scaffolds treated with 0.05 mg/ml chitosan solution provided the best micro and nanofiber structure with abundant chitosan nanofibers but without the formation of films. Surface chemical properties were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The initial water contact angle of the scaffolds decreased from 122.3±0.4° for neat PPC scaffolds to 53.8±1.6° for scaffolds with plasma treatment and chitosan nanofibers. The mechanical properties of the scaffolds were affected by plasma treatment with Young's modulus experiencing a reduction of 63%. Meanwhile, Young's modulus experienced a 26% improvement after the introduction of chitosan nanofibers. Fibroblast cells were cultured on the scaffolds to study the effects of both the plasma treatment and the introduction of chitosan nanofibers on cell adhesion, proliferation, and morphology. The scaffolds with PPC microfibers and chitosan nanofibers showed a superior cell response in terms of cell attachment, cell proliferation, and cell-scaffold interactions over the other scaffolds., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Unidirectionally and orthogonally aligned thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) nanofibers were electrospun using a custom-built electrospinning device. The unidirectionally aligned fibers were collected using two parallel copper plates, and the orthogonally aligned fibers were collected using two orthogonal sets of parallel copper plates with alternate negative connections. Carbon nanotubes (CNT) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) were added to modify the polymer solution. It was found that both CNT and PAA were capable of increasing solution conductivity. The TPU/PAA fiber showed the highest degree of fiber orientation with more than 90% of the fibers having an orientation angle between -10° and 10° for unidirectionally aligned fibers, and for orthogonally aligned fibers, the orientation angle of 50% fibers located between -10° and 10° and 48% fibers located between 80° and 100°. Viability assessment of 3T3 fibroblasts cultured on TPU/PAA fibers suggested that the material was cytocompatible. The cells' orientation and migration direction closely matched the fibers' orientation. The cell migration velocity and distance were both enhanced with the guidance of fibers compared with cells cultured on random fibers and common tissue culture plastic. Controlling cell migration velocity and directionality may provide ways to influence differentiation and gene expression and systems that would allow further exploration of wound repair and metastatic cell behavior., (© 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)/hydroxyapatite (HA) scaffolds were fabricated via electrospinning. The effects of TPU properties and HA particle size on scaffold physical properties and osteoblast-like cell performance were investigated. It was found that the addition of micro-HA (mHA), which was inlayed in the fiber, decreased the electrospun fiber diameter. On the contrary, nano-HA (nHA), which was either embedded or existed inside of the fiber, increased the fiber diameter for both soft and hard TPUs. The soft TPU had a much lower Young's modulus and higher strain-at-break than the hard TPU. The addition of both mHA and nHA decreased the tensile properties; this decrease was more significant with mHA. The cells on the hard scaffolds actively proliferated and migrated compared to those on the soft scaffolds. On the other hand, cells on the soft scaffolds more effectively induced osteogenesis of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) than those on the hard scaffolds. In addition, our data suggest that the soft scaffolds with supplementation of nHA further enhanced osteogenesis of hMSCs compared to those without nHA. Polylactic acid (PLA) and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) are two kinds of biocompatible and biodegradable polymers that can be used in biomedical applications. PLA has rigid mechanical properties while TPU possesses flexible mechanical properties. Blended TPU/PLA tissue engineering scaffolds at different ratios for tunable properties were fabricated via twin screw extrusion and microcellular injection molding techniques for the first time. Multiple test methods were used to characterize these materials. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed the existence of the two components in the blends; differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) confirmed the immiscibility between the TPU and PLA. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images verified that, at the composition ratios studied, PLA was dispersed as spheres or islands inside the TPU matrix and that this phase morphology further influenced the scaffold's microstructure and surface roughness. The blends exhibited a large range of mechanical properties that covered several human tissue requirements. 3T3 fibroblast cell culture showed that the scaffolds supported cell proliferation and migration properly. Most importantly, this study demonstrated the feasibility of mass producing biocompatible PLA/TPU scaffolds with tunable microstructures, surface roughnesses, and mechanical properties that have the potential to be used as artificial scaffolds in multiple tissue engineering applications., (© 2013.)

Objective: To explore the effects of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) on type II alveolar epithelial cell (AECII) exposed to hyperoxia, and to determine whether the mechanism is mediated by protein kinase C alpha/nuclear factor-KappaB (PKC alpha/NF-KappaB) signal pathway., Methods: AECII were isolated from the lung of 21 days fetal rat and cultured for 15 hours to coalesce. Then AECII were randomly assigned into four groups: air, hyperoxia, O(2)/CGRP, and O(2)/CGRP8-37 (a receptor antagonist against CGRP). AECII were exposed to FiO(2) 21% (air) or 85% (hyperoxia) for 24 hours respectively. In O(2)/CGRP and O(2)/CGRP8-37 groups CGRP or both CGRP and CGRP8-37 were added into cultural fluid before placing the plate into 85% oxygen. Cell proliferation ability was determined by methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) assay and cell cycles by flow cytometry. Western blotting was employed to detect the fraction of PKC alpha in membrane and cytosol, and translocation of NF-KappaB was observed under laser confocal microscopy., Results: AECII in hyperoxia group showed a decreased viability of AECII [(68.752+/-5.766)% vs. (100.000+/-6.682)%] and had an enhanced percentage of G0/G1 phase [(80.652+/-6.253)% vs. (45.825+/-2.899)%] with a corresponding decline in percentage of S phase [(14.198+/-4.785)% vs. (27.470+/-2.775)%] and G2/M phases [(5.148+/-1.688)% vs. (26.708+/-1.863)%] compared with AECII in air (all P<0.01). Addition with CGRP before hyperoxia exposure promoted AECII proliferation [(94.813+/-6.102)%] and enhanced the cell proportions in S and G2/M phases [(30.547+/-9.861)% and (17.668+/-9.509)%, all P<0.01]. The ratio of membrane to cytoplasm fraction of PKC alpha declined (0.63+/-0.10 vs. 1.00+/-0.09) and the fluorescence of NF-KappaB in nucleus enhanced (22.98+/-2.20 vs. 14.54+/-2.35) in hyperoxia compared with that in air, while both the ratio of PKC alpha and intensity of NF-KappaB were increased in O(2)/CGRP group (1.41+/-0.23, 35.38+/-3.37) compared with those in hyperoxia (0.63+/-0.10, 22.98+/-2.20) and O(2)/CGRP8-37 groups (0.74+/-0.10, 24.88+/-1.81, all P<0.01)., Conclusion: CGRP could promote proliferation of AECII when exposed to high oxygen tension. PKC alpha participates in the signal transduction process and NF-KappaB is a downstream molecular of PKC alpha, executing in part the function of PKC alpha signal.

Through researches of channels and collaterals and clinical practice of many years, the authors understand that Chinese medicine, which considers the human body as an interrelated, mutual constraints, whole, dynamic living system, has gradually become an important part of modern medicine. Channels and collaterals are a closed loop system which is communicated and linked by energy and information in the form of electromagnetic oscillation, reflecting many characteristics similar to quantum. Channels and collaterals are not a fixed organizational structure. Studies on channel and collaterals find that the track of the propagated sensation along channels (PSC) have the phenomenon drifting about. This exactly reflects the law of channels dynamically running. By information triggering and living resonance, channels and collaterals bring into play entirely regulative action. The innovative treatment of channels and collaterals followed by characteristics and laws of quantum can get a better curative effect. Theory of channels in the position of quantum information medical science provides an important breach for modernization of Chinese medicine.

Objective: To find out the relationship of ecological environment protection and the transmission of Lyme disease under economic development of western regions in China., Methods: Both scene molecular and traditional epidemiological methods were used to assess the effects of environmental protection on the transmission of Lyme disease., Results: Among areas as protected natural forests, semi-protected nursery forests and farmland, the vector tick species and reservoir rodents from protected natural forests area had the highest quantity of population and diversity index and followed by semi-protected nursery forests. Vector competence of reservoir hosts and value of natural foci from protected natural forests area were also remarkably higher than those areas of semi-protected nursery forests and farmland. Staff working in the areas who were bitten by ticks from protected natural forests areas had higher serological positive rate (66.7%) than those from semi-protected nursery forests areas (2.5%), and both showed remarkable difference (P = 6.45, E-11 < 0.01, df = 1). The difference of genetic divergence among these subpopulations from different habitats being surveyed showed that the biggest genetic divergence index (F(st)) of 0.557 42 was between protected natural forests area and farmland area. The index between semi-protected nursery forests area and farmland area was also bigger than zero with statistical significance. The genetic divergence index of 0.108 02 between semi-protected nursery forests area and protected natural forests area was the lowest which showed that genetic divergence between the subpopulations of the two sampling areas was not obvious. The genetic distance among these subpopulations had similar change along with their habitats., Conclusion: Under economic development of western regions in China, when programs as natural forests protections, recovery prairie and grassland from farmland were actively performed, vectors insects and reservoir hosts of Lyme disease might also be protected to some degree but the risk and value of natural foci on Lyme disease might increase. Data suggested that people entering these areas should be told to strengthen their awareness on individual protection against the disease.
