Abstract

This paper presents a novel analytical method based on improved Gaussian mixture model (GMM) to solve the probabilistic load flow problem. The proposed method accounts for the uncertainty introduced due to increasing percentages of renewable generation. First, the joint probability density function of several wind farms outputs is derived by using the improved GMM with the estimated parameters obtained by genetic algorithm (GA) in this paper, which could improve the accuracy of the probabilistic model. Next, the analytical expressions between the output power of wind farms and line power of power system are deduced by linearizing load flow equations. And, the joint probability density function and joint cumulative distribution function of line power are obtained from linear load equation and joint probability density function of wind output power. Finally, the proposed method, Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) and traditional GMM based methods are all tested on a modified IEEE 39-bus system and a modified IEEE 118-bus system with multiple wind farms, which demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed method.

Background: Coffee consumption is inversely associated with type 2 diabetes. Cafestol, a bioactive compound in coffee, has demonstrated glucose-lowering and insulin-secretory properties in cell and animal studies. The acute effects of cafestol on glucose metabolism in humans have only been briefly investigated, and longer-term effects have not been explored. This study aimed to assess the effects of purified cafestol on insulin sensitivity and other metabolic parameters in healthy individuals with increased waist circumference at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Methods: A 12-week randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel trial was conducted with 40 participants. Insulin suppression tests, mixed meal tests, and MRI scans were performed before and after the intervention. Results: Administering 6 mg of cafestol twice daily did not alter insulin sensitivity or glucose tolerance but led to significant reductions in body weight (2%), visceral fat volume (5%), and gamma-glutamyl transferase levels (15%) compared to the placebo. Conclusions: Cafestol may hold promise for weight and visceral fat reduction. Cafestol did not improve insulin sensitivity or glucose tolerance in this study but might still contribute to the observed inverse association between coffee consumption and type 2 diabetes. Future research should explore higher dosages and longer treatment durations, particularly in individuals with impaired glucose metabolism and type 2 diabetes.

7. Towards Model Extraction Attacks in GAN-Based Image Translation via Domain Shift Mitigation

Abstract

Model extraction attacks (MEAs) enable an attacker to replicate the functionality of a victim deep neural network (DNN) model by only querying its API service remotely, posing a severe threat to the security and integrity of pay-per-query DNN-based services. Although the majority of current research on MEAs has primarily concentrated on neural classifiers, there is a growing prevalence of image-to-image translation (I2IT) tasks in our everyday activities. However, techniques developed for MEA of DNN classifiers cannot be directly transferred to the case of I2IT, rendering the vulnerability of I2IT models to MEA attacks often underestimated. This paper unveils the threat of MEA in I2IT tasks from a new perspective. Diverging from the traditional approach of bridging the distribution gap between attacker queries and victim training samples, we opt to mitigate the effect caused by the different distributions, known as the domain shift. This is achieved by introducing a new regularization term that penalizes high-frequency noise, and seeking a flatter minimum to avoid overfitting to the shifted distribution. Extensive experiments on different image translation tasks, including image super-resolution and style transfer, are performed on different backbone victim models, and the new design consistently outperforms the baseline by a large margin across all metrics. A few real-life I2IT APIs are also verified to be extremely vulnerable to our attack, emphasizing the need for enhanced defenses and potentially revised API publishing policies.

8. Design of Compact Patch Antenna Based on Support Vector Regression

Abstract

In this paper, support vector regression (SVR) algorithm is used for compact patch antenna design. By etching three T-shaped slots on the ground plane of a rectangle patch antenna, the current distribution on the ground plane is changed and the resonant frequency is reduced. However, there is no reliable formula between the physical parameters of slots and the resonant frequency for antenna design. In this paper, the SVR algorithm is innovatively used to establish the mapping relationship between four parameters and the resonant frequency. In order to reduce the data samples required to train the SVR model, these four parameters are divided into three groups. This grouping method ensures the reasonable distribution of data samples, and greatly reduces the training data samples and reduces the time to collect data by simulator software. The hyperparameters are optimized by using 10-fold cross validation. 108 antenna models (data samples) with different geometrical and electrical parameters are designed and simulated for the initial dataset. The SVR model is trained on the 75 data samples with the coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.9736 and is tested on the remainder 33 data samples. With the computation of the SVR model, the size of the proposed antenna decreases by 19.18% compared with that of the conventional rectangle patch antenna. The proposed structure is fabricated and measured. The results show that the proposed SVR model has good generalization on the real antenna model.

Abstract

Background: Recent researches have investigated the biological importance of RNA N1-methyladenosine (m1A) modifications in oncogenesis and progression of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). However, whether m1A modifications also have latent effect in tumor microenvironment (TME) generation and immune regulation in HNSCC is unknown. Methods: We evaluated the m1A modification patterns and related to these modification patterns with TME cell infiltration features in 1041 HNSCC samples by bioinformatics approach. Results: The m1A score is an independent prognostic indicator. HNSCC patients with low m1A score group with poor overall survival (OS) was mainly characterized by stroma activation, lack of sufficient immune infiltration, and exhibited an immune- desert TME phenotype. Low m1A scores were also correlated with increased tumor mutation burden (TMB), and HNSCC patients with high TMB and low m1A scores had the worst OS. In addition, anti-CTLA-4 combined with anti-PD1 treatment was more effective in the high m1A score subgroup than in the low m1A score subgroup. Conclusions: This study revealed that m1A modifications play a non-negligible role in developing the TME versatility and complexity of HNSCC. Assessing m1A modification patterns in HNSCC helps improve our comprehension of its TME infiltration profile and guides more effective immunotherapeutic approaches.

Abstract

In the uncertain vibration analysis of fractionally-damped beams whose damping characteristic is described using fractional derivative model, the uncertain excitation is usually modeled as a stochastic process. However, it is often difficult to obtain sufficient samples of the excitation to establish a precise probability distribution function for the stochastic process model in practical engineering problems. Hence, in this paper, a nonrandom vibration analysis method for fractionally-damped beams is proposed to obtain the dynamic displacement response bounds of the beams under the uncertain excitation. Specifically, the uncertain excitation applied to the fractionally-damped beam is treated as a spatial-time interval field, so that the dynamic displacement response of the beam is also a space-time interval field. The middle point function and the radius function of the displacement response of the fractionally-damped beam can be derived based on the modal superposition method and the Laplace transform, through which the bound functions of the dynamic displacement response can be obtained. Abstract

Accumulation of active (toxic) metabolites of opioids might explain cases of opioid toxicity when high doses are used for long periods of time. Other mechanisms of late toxicity of opioids may be found at the receptor level. Whatever the cause, a change of opioids using equianalgesic doses can be expected to improve symptoms of toxicity in some patients, while maintaining pain control. We reviewed the experience with this technique in patients admitted to the Palliative Care Unit of the Edmonton General Hospital. Of 191 patients, 80 underwent opioid rotation (OR) for cognitive failure, hallucinations, myoclonus, nausea and vomiting, local toxicity, and persistent pain. These leading symptoms improved in 58/80 patients (73%, P < 0.01). Pain control, as measured on a 10-cm visual analogue scale (VAS), improved from 4.4 +/- 2.3 to 3.6 +/- 2.0 (P < 0.004) at a dose significantly lower than that predicted to be equianalgesic (577 +/- 1535 mg before OR versus 336 +/- 593 mg after OR, P < 0.04). We conclude that symptoms of opioid toxicity can be relieved by OR, and that a choice of two or three different opioids is necessary to obtain satisfactory long-term pain control.

Abstract

Molecular dynamics (MD) method is used to simulate self-insertion behaviour of peptides into single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). Simulation results show that peptides containing more hydrophobic amino acids tend to be able to enter carbon nanotubes more easily, while peptides consisting of more hydrophilic amino acids are usually less capable of entering carbon nanotubes. Detailed investigations show that electrostatic interactions, combined with van der Waals interactions, play dominant roles in the process of insertion of peptides into carbon nanotubes. Such results provide valuable information on the potential applications of carbon nanotubes in the fields of drug delivery, drug design, protein control, sensoring and measurement. Abstract

The designability of protein differs significantly from one structure to another. Two-dimensional HP lattice model is employed to formulate the relationship between the protein sequences and compact structures in monomer and homodimer form. Our results show that most structures are encoded by normal and prion protein sequences, and most of protein sequences are potentially able to fold to alternative structures upon dimerization thermodynamically. ABSTRACTThe highly reduced mitochondria (mitosomes) of Giardia intestinalisare recently discovered organelles for which, it was suggested, iron-sulfur cluster assembly was their only conserved function. However, only an incomplete set of the components required for FeS cluster biogenesis was localized to the mitosomes. Via proteomic analysis of a mitosome-rich cellular fraction together with immunofluorescence microscopy, we identified a novel mitosomal protein homologous to monothiol glutaredoxins containing a CGFS motif at the active site. Sequence analysis revealed the presence of long nonconserved N-terminal extension of 77 amino acids, which was absent in the mature protein. Expression of the complete and N-terminally truncated forms of the glutaredoxin indicated that the extension is involved in glutaredoxin import into mitosomes. However, the mechanism of preprotein processing is unclear, as the mitosomal processing peptidase is unable to cleave this type of extension. The recombinant mature protein was shown to form a homodimeric structure, which binds a labile FeS cluster. The cluster is stabilized by glutathione and dithiothreitol. Phylogenetic analysis showed that giardial glutaredoxin is related to the mitochondrial monothiol glutaredoxins involved in FeS cluster assembly. The identification of a mitochondrial-type monothiol glutaredoxin in the mitosomes of G. intestinalisthus completes the mitosomal FeS cluster biosynthetic pathway and provides further evidence for the mitochondrial origin of these organelles.

46. Excitation Dynamics in the Core Antenna in the Photosystem I Reaction Center of the Chlorophyll d-Containing Photosynthetic Prokaryote Acaryochloris marina

Abstract

Transient absorption difference spectroscopy on the picosecond time scale was used to study the ultrafast excitation dynamics in the photosystem I core antenna in Acaryochloris marina, a newly discovered marine oxygenic photosynthetic prokaryote that contains chlorophyll d as its major photopigment. Photosystem I particles were isolated using a detergent treatment of the thylakoid membranes and sucrose gradient ultracentrifugation. Steady-state fluorescence measurements at both room temperature and 77 K as well as ultrafast transient absorbance and fluorescence measurements were carried out on photosystem I. For ultrafast transient absorbance measurements, the sample was excited at 720, 740, and 745 nm with either high or low excitation energy. In each case, after a rapid (subpicosecond) energy transfer, the excitation energy resided on pigments absorbing at 710 nm. A kinetic component of about 40 ps and a nondecaying component on the order of nanoseconds were resolved. The 40-ps component was assigned to the trapping of excitation energy into the reaction center. The trapping time was confirmed by time-resolved fluorescence measurements. The 40-ps trapping time, because of the formation of a charge-separated state in the reaction center, is nearly excitation wavelength-independent. Narrow spectral-band excitations (5-nm fwhm) at 690, 720, 730, and 740 nm were used to excite different pools of the photosystem I core antenna selectively. The initial spectral changes show a strong excitation wavelength dependence. An exceptionally broad, prompt bleaching, spanning from 700 to 740 nm, was induced when excitation was directly into the primary electron donor, P740, suggesting the existence of an excitonic coupling between a group of pigments, most likely the reaction center cofactors. A 2−3-ps energy equilibration process was also observed, similar to that observed in other cyanobacterial photosystem I. No evidence was found for a pool of long-wavelength antenna pigments with energy lower than that of the primary donor P740.

Abstract

The ALICE Collaboration at the LHC reports measurement of the inclusive production cross section of electrons from semi-leptonic decays of beauty hadrons with rapidity |y| < 0.8 and transverse momentum 1 < pT < 10 GeV/c, in pp collisions at √s = 2.76 TeV. Electrons not originating from semi-electronic decay of beauty hadrons are suppressed using the impact parameter of the corresponding tracks. The production cross section of beauty decay electrons is compared to the result obtained with an alternative method which uses the distribution of the azimuthal angle between heavy-flavour decay electrons and charged hadrons. Perturbative QCD predictions agree with the measured cross section within the experimental and theoretical uncertainties. The integrated visible cross section, σb→e =3.47 ± 0.40(stat)+1.12(sys) ± 0.07(norm) μb, was extrapolated to full phase space using Fixed Order −1.33 plusNext-to-LeadingLog(FONLL) calculations to obtain the total bb ̄ production crosssection, σbb ̄=130 ± 15.1(stat)+42.1 (sys)+3.4 (extr) ± 2.5(norm) ± 4.4(BR) μb.
