Abstract: An efficient diastereoselective access to all carbon-substituted oxazolo-pyrrolidinones, including a quaternary carbon stereocenter, is described. This was achieved by using a domino process between hydroxy halogenoamides and various Michael acceptors. This strategy provided good to high yield and selectivity. Application to the diastereoselective synthesis of an enantioenriched spirooxindole skeleton in high yield and selectivity is also presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: A new and versatile approach to prepare bicyclic lactams in moderate to high yield is reported herein. This approach, based on an extension of Meyers' method, provides 6,5-, 6,6- and 6,7-fused bicyclic lactams 6a-j from reaction of 1,8-naphthalaldehydic acid 7 with several aminoalcohols including L-serine, diamines and ethanethiol, in the absence of any catalyst. The reaction of 7 with (R)-phenylglycinol gave the 6,5-fused bicyclic lactam 6j in excellent diastereoselectivity (>98:2). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: All in one: Meyers' bicyclic lactams were synthesized in high yield from furans using a new and powerful method that involves a one-pot singlet-oxygen-initiated reaction cascade. This method has broad synthetic potential because of the ease of access to a wide range of furans with a variety of substituents.
