Present and future climatic trends are expected to markedly alter water fluxes and stores in the hydrologic cycle. In addition, water demand continues to grow due to increased human use and a growing population. Sustainably managing water resources requires a thorough understanding of water storage and flow in natural, agricultural, and urban ecosystems. Measurements of stable isotopes of water (hydrogen and oxygen) in the water cycle (atmosphere, soils, plants, surface water, and groundwater) can provide information on the transport pathways, sourcing, dynamics, ages, and storage pools of water that is difficult to obtain with other techniques. However, the potential of these techniques for practical questions has not been fully exploited yet. Here, we outline the benefits and limitations of potential applications of stable isotope methods useful to water managers, farmers, and other stakeholders. We also describe several case studies demonstrating how stable isotopes of water can support water management decision-making. Finally, we propose a workflow that guides users through a sequence of decisions required to apply stable isotope methods to examples of water management issues. We call for ongoing dialogue and a stronger connection between water management stakeholders and water stable isotope practitioners to identify the most pressing issues and develop best-practice guidelines to apply these techniques.

Floodplains are one of the most threatened ecosystems. Even though the vegetation composition in floodplain forests is expected to reflect the variation in groundwater levels and flood duration and frequency, there is little field data on the inundation dynamics (e.g., the variability in flood duration and flood frequency), especially for the understudied seasonally dry tropics. This limits our understanding of these ecosystems and the mechanisms that cause the flooding. We, therefore, investigated six floodplain forests in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil for 1.5 years (two wet seasons): Capivari, Jacaré, and Aiuruoca in the Rio Grande basin, and Jequitaí, Verde Grande, and Carinhanha in the São Francisco basin. These locations span a range of climates (humid subtropical to seasonal tropical) and biomes (Atlantic forest to Caatinga). At each location, we continuously measured water levels in five geomorphologically distinct eco‐units: marginal levee, lower terrace, higher terrace, lower plain, and higher plain, providing a unique hydrological dataset for these understudied regions. The levees and terraces were flooded for longer periods than the plains. Inundation of the terraces lasted around 40 days per year. The levees in the Rio Grande basin were flooded for shorter durations. In the São Francisco basin, the flooding of the levees lasted longer and the water level regime of the levees was more similar to that of the terraces. In the Rio Grande basin, flooding was most likely caused by rising groundwater levels (i.e., "flow pulse") and flood pulses that caused overbank flooding. In the São Francisco basin, inundation was most likely caused by overbank flooding (i.e., "flood pulse"). These findings highlight the large variation in inundation dynamics across floodplain forests and are relevant to predict the impacts of changes in the flood regime due to climate change and other anthropogenic changes on floodplain forest functioning. Hydrological models are useful tools for water resources studies, yet their calibration is still a challenge, especially if aiming at improved estimates of multiple components of the water cycle. This has led the hydrologic community to look for ways to constrain models with multiple variables. Remote sensing estimates of soil moisture are very promising in this sense, especially in large areas for which field observations may be unevenly distributed. However, the use of such data to calibrate hydrological models in a synergistic way is still not well understood, especially in tropical humid areas such as those found in South America. Here, we perform multiple scenarios of multiobjective model optimization with in situ discharge and the SMOS L4 root zone soil moisture product for the Upper Paraná River Basin in South America (drainage area > 900,000 km²), for which discharge data for 136 river gauges are used. An additional scenario is used to compare the relative impacts of using all river gauges and a small subset containing nine gauges only. Across the basin, the joint calibration (CAL-DS) using discharge and soil moisture leads to improved precision and accuracy for both variables. The discharges estimated by CAL-DS (median KGE improvement for discharge was 0.14) are as accurate as those obtained with the calibration with discharge only (median equal to 0.14), while the CAL-DS soil moisture retrieval is practically as accurate (median KGE improvement for soil moisture was 0.11) as that estimated using the calibration with soil moisture only (median equal to 0.13). Nonetheless, the individual calibration with discharge rates is not able to retrieve satisfactory soil moisture estimates, and vice versa. These results show the complementarity between these two variables in the model calibration and highlight the benefits of considering multiple variables in the calibration framework. It is also shown that, by considering only nine gauges instead of 136 in the model optimization, the model is able to estimate reasonable discharge and soil moisture, although relatively less accurately and with less precision than for the entire dataset. In summary, this study shows that, for poorly gauged tropical basins, the joint calibration of SMOS soil moisture and a few in situ discharge gauges is capable of providing reasonable discharge and soil moisture estimates basin-wide and is more preferable than performing only a discharge-oriented optimization process.

For many catchments, there is insufficient field data to calibrate the hydrological models that are needed to answer water resources management questions. One way to overcome this lack of data is to use remotely sensed data. In this study, we assess whether Landsat‐based surface water extent observations can inform the calibration of a lumped bucket‐type model for Brazilian catchments. We first performed synthetic experiments with daily, monthly, and limited monthly data (April–October), assuming a perfect monotonic relation between streamflow and stream width. The median relative performance was 0.35 for daily data and 0.17 for monthly data, where values above 0 imply an improvement in model performance compared to the lower benchmark. This indicates that the limited temporal resolution of remotely sensed data is not an impediment for model calibration. In a second step, we used real remotely sensed water extent data for calibration. For only 76 of the 671 sites the remotely sensed water extent was large and variable enough to be used for model calibration. For 30% of these sites, calibration with the actual remotely sensed water extent data led to a model fit that was better than the lower benchmark (i.e., relative performance >0). Model performance increased with river width and variation therein. This indicates that the coarse spatial resolution of the freely‐available, long time series of water extent used in this study hampered model calibration. We, therefore, expect that newer higher‐resolution imagery will be helpful for model calibration for more sites, especially when time series length increases. Plain Language Summary: Hydrological models are important for water resources management. The parameters for these models are estimated in a calibration process. Usually, calibration is based on streamflow data from gauging stations. However, for many catchments there are no streamflow data and therefore the calibration of hydrological models is difficult. In this study, we tested whether satellite data that shows the area that is covered by water can be used to calibrate the parameters of a hydrological model for Brazilian catchments. First, we tested if satellite data would be useful if the water extent was perfectly correlated to streamflow and available for every day, month, or month for half of the year due to cloud cover. For two thirds of the catchments, daily observations would be helpful for model calibration, but both monthly data sets were also informative. When we used actual satellite images to calibrate the model for a subset of 76 large rivers, only 30% of them benefitted from these data. This is probably due to inaccuracies in the water extent from satellite images and its coarse spatial resolution. We expect that newer higher‐resolution satellite data will be more useful for model calibration, especially when they become available for longer time periods.
