Abstract

A cryogenic apparatus is described that enables a new experiment, nEDM@SNS, with a major improvement in sensitivity compared to the existing limit in the search for a neutron Electric Dipole Moment (EDM). It uses superfluid $^4$He to produce a high density of Ultra-Cold Neutrons (UCN) which are contained in a suitably coated pair of measurement cells. The experiment, to be operated at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, uses polarized $^3$He from an Atomic Beam Source injected into the superfluid $^4$He and transported to the measurement cells as a co-magnetometer. The superfluid $^4$He is also used as an insulating medium allowing significantly higher electric fields, compared to previous experiments, to be maintained across the measurement cells. These features provide an ultimate statistical uncertainty for the EDM of $2-3\times 10^{-28}$ e-cm, with anticipated systematic uncertainties below this level.

Abstract

Novel experimental techniques are required to make the next big leap in neutron electric dipole moment experimental sensitivity, both in terms of statistics and systematic error control. The nEDM experiment at the Spallation Neutron Source (nEDM@SNS) will implement the scheme of Golub & Lamoreaux [Phys. Rep., 237, 1 (1994)]. The unique properties of combining polarized ultracold neutrons, polarized $^3$He, and superfluid $^4$He will be exploited to provide a sensitivity to $\sim 10^{-28}\,e{\rm \,\cdot\, cm}$. Our cryogenic apparatus will deploy two small ($3\,{\rm L}$) measurement cells with a high density of ultracold neutrons produced and spin analyzed in situ. The electric field strength, precession time, magnetic shielding, and detected UCN number will all be enhanced compared to previous room temperature Ramsey measurements. Our $^3$He co-magnetometer offers unique control of systematic effects, in particular the Bloch-Siegert induced false EDM. Furthermore, there will be two distinct measurement modes: free precession and dressed spin. This will provide an important self-check of our results. Following five years of "critical component demonstration," our collaboration transitioned to a "large scale integration" phase in 2018. Abstract

Enzymes that modify the proteome, referred to as post-translational modifying (PTM) enzymes, are central regulators of cellular signaling. Determining the substrate specificity of PTM enzymes is a critical step in unraveling their biological functions both in normal physiological processes and in disease states. Advances in peptide chemistry over the last century have enabled the rapid generation of peptide libraries for querying substrate recognition by PTM enzymes. In this article, we highlight various peptide-based approaches for analysis of PTM enzyme substrate specificity. We focus on the application of these technologies to proteases and also discuss specific examples in which they have been used to uncover the substrate specificity of other types of PTM enzymes, such as kinases. In particular, we highlight our multiplex substrate profiling by mass spectrometry (MSP-MS) assay, which uses a rationally designed, physicochemically diverse library of tetradecapeptides. We show how this method has been applied to PTM enzymes to uncover biological function, and guide substrate and inhibitor design. We also briefly discuss how this technique can be combined with other methods to gain a systems-level understanding of PTM enzyme regulation and function.

Abstract

The more than 500 protein kinases comprising the human kinome catalyze hundreds of thousands of phosphorylation events to regulate a diversity of cellular functions; however, the extended substrate specificity is still unknown for many of these kinases. We report here a method for quantitatively describing kinase substrate specificity using an unbiased peptide library-based approach with direct measurement of phosphorylation by tandem liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) peptide sequencing (multiplex substrate profiling by mass spectrometry, MSP-MS). This method can be deployed with as low as 10 nM enzyme to determine activity against S/T/Y-containing peptides; additionally, label-free quantitation is used to ascertain catalytic efficiency values for individual peptide substrates in the multiplex assay. Using this approach we developed quantitative motifs for a selection of kinases from each branch of the kinome, with and without known substrates, highlighting the applicability of the method. The sensitivity of this approach is evidenced by its ability to detect phosphorylation events from nanogram quantities of immunoprecipitated material, which allows for wider applicability of this method. To increase the information content of the quantitative kinase motifs, a sublibrary approach was used to expand the testable sequence space within a peptide library of approximately 100 members for CDK1, CDK7, and CDK9. Kinetic analysis of the HIV-1 Tat (transactivator of transcription)-positive transcription elongation factor b (P-TEFb) interaction allowed for localization of the P-TEFb phosphorylation site as well as characterization of the stimulatory effect of Tat on P-TEFb catalytic efficiency.

Archery lends itself to scientific analysis. In this paper we discuss physics laws that relate to the mechanics of bow and arrow, to the shooting process and to the flight of the arrow. In parallel, we describe experiments that address these laws. The detailed results of these measurements, performed with a specific bow and arrow, provide insight into many aspects of archery and illustrate the importance of quantitative information in the scientific process. Abstract

The paper describes the commissioning of the experimental equipment and the machine studies required for the first spin-filtering experiment with protons at a beam kinetic energy of $49.3\,$MeV in COSY. The implementation of a low-$\beta$ insertion made it possible to achieve beam lifetimes of $\tau_{\rm{b}}=8000\,$s in the presence of a dense polarized hydrogen storage-cell target of areal density $d_{\rm t}=(5.5\pm 0.2)\times 10^{13}\,\mathrm{atoms/cm^{2}}$. The developed techniques can be directly applied to antiproton machines and allow for the determination of the spin-dependent $\bar{p}p$ cross sections via spin filtering.

Abstract

Planar, double-torsional oscillators are especially suitable for short-range macroscopic force search experiments, since they can be operated at the limit of instrumental thermal noise. As a study of this limit, we report a measurement of the noise kinetic energy of a polycrystalline tungsten oscillator in thermal equilibrium at room temperature. The fluctuations of the oscillator in a high-Q torsional mode with a resonance frequency near 1 kHz are detected with capacitive transducers coupled to a sensitive differential amplifier. The electronic processing is calibrated by means of a known electrostatic force and input from a finite element model. Abstract

The SciBath-768 detector is a prototype neutral particle detector offering high-precision reconstruction of neutrino and neutron events. It consists of a three dimensional grid of 768 wavelength-shifting fibers immersed in 82 liters of liquid scintillator. Initially conceived as a charged particle detector for neutrino studies, it is also sensitive to fast neutrons (1-100 MeV). Simulation results show 30% efficiency and 30% energy resolution for 1-10 MeV tagged neutron events. Abstract

We propose to use an internal polarized hydrogen storage cell gas target in the AD ring to determine for the first time the two total spin-dependent pbar-p cross sections sigma_1 and sigma_2 at antiproton beam energies in the range from 50 to 450 MeV. The data obtained are of interest by themselves for the general theory of pbar-p interactions since they will provide a first experimental constraint of the spin-spin dependence of the nucleon-antinucleon potential in the energy range of interest. In addition, measurements of the polarization buildup of stored antiprotons are required to define the optimum parameters of a future, dedicated Antiproton Polarizer Ring (APR), intended to feed a double-polarized asymmetric pbar-p collider with polarized antiprotons. Such a machine has recently been proposed by the PAX collaboration for the new Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) at GSI in Darmstadt, Germany. Abstract

We discuss polarizing a proton beam in a storage ring, either by selective removal or by spin flip of the stored ions. Prompted by recent, conflicting calculations, we have carried out a measurement of the spin flip cross section in low-energy electron-proton scattering. The experiment uses the cooling electron beam at COSY as an electron target. The measured cross sections are too small for making spin flip a viable tool in polarizing a stored beam. This invalidates a recent proposal to use co-moving polarized positrons to polarize a stored antiproton beam., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures

14. Dark Rate of a Photomultiplier at Cryogenic Temperatures

Abstract

When cooled below room temperature, the pulse response of a photomultiplier in the absence of light (dark rate) initially decreases, but then turns around near 250 K and continues to rise all the way down to 4 K. When the photomultiplier is cold, its dark response is burst-like. We have measured the characteristics of the dark response of a photomultiplier.

Abstract

The proton and deuteron analyzing powers and 10 of the possible 12 spin correlation coefficients have been measured for p+d elastic scattering at proton bombarding energies of 135 and 200 MeV. The results are compared with Faddeev calculations using two different NN potentials. The qualitative features of the extensive data set on the spin dependence in p+d elastic scattering over a wide range of angles presented here are remarkably well explained by two-nucleon force predictions without inclusion of a three-nucleon force. The remaining discrepancies are, in general, not alleviated when theoretical three-nucleon forces are included in the calculations., Comment: 43 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication by Phys. Abstract

A research program with the aim of investigating the spin dependence of the three-nucleon continuum in pd collisions at intermediate energies was carried out at IUCF using the Polarized INternal Target EXperiments (PINTEX) facility. In the elastic scattering experiment at 135 and 200 MeV proton beam energies a total of 15 independent spin observables were obtained. The breakup experiment was done with a vector and tensor polarized deuteron beam of 270 MeV and an internal polarized hydrogen gas target. We developed a novel technique for the analysis of the breakup observables, the sampling method. Abstract

We present a method to integrate predictions from a theoretical model of a reaction with three bodies in the final state over the region of phase space covered by a given experiment. The method takes into account the true experimental acceptance, as well as variations of detector efficiency, and eliminates the need for a Monte-Carlo simulation of the detector setup. The method is applicable to kinematically complete experiments. Examples for the use of this method include several polarization observables in dp break-up at 270 MeV. The calculations are carried out in the Faddeev framework with the CD Bonn nucleon-nucleon interaction, with or without the inclusion of an additional three-nucleon force., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

Understanding the quark and gluon substructure of the nucleon has been a prime goal of both nuclear and particle physics for more than thirty years and has led to much of the progress in strong interaction physics. Still the flavor dependence of the nucleon's spin is a significant fundamental question that is not understood. Experiments measuring the spin content of the nucleon have reported conflicting results on the amount of nucleon spin carried by strange quarks. Quasi-elastic neutrino scattering, observed using a novel detection technique, provides a theoretically clean measure of this quantity. The optimum neutrino beam energy needed to measure the strange spin of the nucleon is 1 GeV. This is also an ideal energy to search for neutrino oscillations at high $\Delta m^2$ in an astrophysically interesting region. Models of the r-process in supernovae which include high-mass sterile neutrinos may explain the abundance of neutron-rich heavy metals in the universe. These high-mass sterile neutrinos are outside the sensitivity region of any previous neutrino oscillation experiments. The Booster neutrino beamline at Fermilab provides the world's highest intensity neutrino beam in the 0.5-1.0 GeV energy range, a range ideal for both of these measurements. A small detector located upstream of the MiniBooNE detector, 100 m from the recently commissioned Booster neutrino source, could definitively measure the strange quark contribution to the nucleon spin. This detector, in conjunction with the MiniBooNE detector, could also investigate $\nu_{\mu}$ disappearance in a currently unexplored, cosmologically interesting region., Comment: 219 pages

Abstract

The analyzing power for proton-carbon elastic scattering in the coulomb-nuclear interference region of momentum transfer, $9.0\times10^{-3}<-t<4.1\times10^{-2}$ (GeV/$c)^{2}$, was measured with a 21.7 GeV/$c$ polarized proton beam at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron of Brookhaven National Laboratory. The ratio of hadronic spin-flip to non-flip amplitude, $r_5$, was obtained from the analyzing power to be $\text{Re} r_5=0.088\pm 0.058$ and $\text{Im} r_5=-0.161\pm 0.226$., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures and 1 table. Abstract

The study of near--threshold meson production in pp and pd collisions involving polarized beams and polarized targets offers the rare opportunity to gain insight into short--range features of the nucleon--nucleon interaction. The Cooler Synchrotron COSY at FZ--J\"ulich is a unique environment to perform such studies. Measurements of polarization observables require a cylindrically symmetrical detector, capable to measure the momenta and the directions of outgoing charged hadrons. The wide energy range of COSY leads to momenta of outgoing protons to be detected in a single meson production reaction between 300 and 2500 MeV/c. Scattering angles of protons to be covered extend to about $45^{\circ}$ in the laboratory system. An azimuthal angular coverage of the device around 98% seems technically achievable. Abstract

A first measurement of longitudinal as well as transverse spin correlation coefficients for the reaction $\vec{p}\vec{p}\to pn\pi^+$ was made using a polarized proton target and a polarized proton beam. We report kinematically complete measurements for this reaction at 325, 350, 375 and 400 MeV beam energy. The spin correlation coefficients $A_{xx}+A_{yy}, A_{xx}-A_{yy}, A_{zz}, A_{xz},$ and the analyzing power $A_{y},$ as well as angular distributions for $\sigma(\theta_{\pi})$ and the polarization observables $A_{ij}(\theta_{\pi})$ were extracted. Partial wave cross sections for dominant transition channels were obtained from a partial wave analysis that included the transitions with final state angular momenta of $l\leq 1$. The measurements of the ${\vec{p}\vec{p}\to pn\pi^{+}}$ polarization observables are compared with the predictions from the J\"ulich meson exchange model. The agreement is very good at 325 MeV, but it deteriorates increasingly for the higher energies. At all energies agreement with the model is better than for the reaction ${\vec{p}\vec{p}\to pp\pi^{0}}$., Comment: Preprint, 21 pp, submitted to Phys. Rev. C. The spin correlation coefficent combinations A_{xx}+A_{yy} and A_{xx}-A_{yy}, the spin correlation coefficients A_{xz} and A_{zz}, and the analyzing power were measured for \vec p \vec p --> d pi^+ between center-of-mass angles 25 deg \leq \theta \leq 65 deg at beam energies of 350.5, 375.0 and 400.0 MeV. The experiment was carried out with a polarized internal target and a stored, polarized beam. Non-vertical beam polarization needed for the measurement of A_{zz} was obtained by the use of solenoidal spin rotators. Near threshold, only a few partial waves contribute, and pion s- and p-waves dominate with a possible small admixture of d-waves. The PINTEX facility at the IUCF Cooler ring, dedicated to the study of spin dependence in nucleon-nucleon interactions, has been used to measure polarization observables of the reaction pp -> pp pi0 at beam energies between 325 and 400 MeV. The stored polarized proton beam had spin projections both in the longitudinal and the transverse directions with respect to the beam momentum. We report here on the measurements of the relative transverse and longitudinal spin-dependent cross sections, deltasigma_T/sigma_tot and deltasigma_L/sigma_tot, and how from these observables the initial spin singlet and triplet cross sections are obtained. Abstract

The internal jet structure in dijet production in deep-inelastic scattering is measured with the H1 detector at HERA. Jets with transverse energies E(T,breit) > 5 GeV are selected in the Breit frame employing kt and cone jet algorithms in the kinematic region of squared momentum transfers of 10 < Q^2 < 120 GeV^2 and x-Bjorken values of 0.0002 < x < 0.008. Jet shapes and subjet multiplicities are measured as functions of a resolution parameter. The corrected data are well described by QCD models. It is observed that jets are more collimated with increasing transverse jet energies and decreasing pseudo-rapidities, i.e. towards the photon direction. With the aim to study spin dependence of pion production near threshold, an internal target facility and a forward detector have been installed in the Cooler synchrotron ring at IUCF. The detector system comprises scintillators and wire chambers. The target consists of a thin-walled open-ended storage cell into which polarized atomic hydrogen is injected. Using a stored and cooled, polarized proton beam, polarization observables of the reaction pp -> pp pi0 have been studied at energies between 21 and 55 MeV above the pion production threshold in the center of mass system. A polarized, internal electron target gradually polarizes a proton beam in a storage ring. Here, we derive the spin-transfer cross section for $\vec e\,(p,\vec p\, )e$\ scattering. A recent measurement of the polarizing effect of a polarized atomic hydrogen target is explained when the effect of the atomic electrons is included. We also consider the interaction of a stored beam with a pure electron target which can be realized either by a comoving electron beam or by trapping of electrons in a potential well. Abstract

Recent calculations of $s$-wave pion production have severely underestimated the accurately known $pp\rightarrow pp\pi^0$\ total cross section near threshold. In these calculations, only the single-nucleon axial-charge operator is considered. We have calculated, in addition to the one-body term, the two-body contributions to this reaction that arise from the exchange of mesons. We find that the inclusion of the scalar $\sigma$-meson exchange current (and lesser contributions from other mesons) increases the cross section by about a factor of five, and leads to excellent agreement with the data. The results are neither very sensitive to changes in the distorting potential that generates the $NN$ wave function, nor to different choices for the meson-nucleon form factors. We argue that $pp\rightarrow pp\pi^0$\ data provide direct experimental evidence for meson-exchange contributions to the axial current., Comment: 28 Pages, IU-NTC #93-07
