Search

Transition Edge Sensors (TES) are superconducting microcalorimeters that can be used for single-photon detection with extremely low backgrounds. When they are within their superconducting transition region, small temperature fluctuations - like the energy deposited by single photons - lead to large resistance variations. These variations can be measured using Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs). This technology is planned to be used as a single-photon detector for later runs of the ALPS II experiment, a light-shining-through-walls experiment at DESY Hamburg, searching for Axion-Like Particles (ALPs), which are possible Dark Matter (DM) candidates. Due to the very low dark count rates in our setup, our TES system might be viable for direct DM searches at sub-MeV masses through electron-scattering of DM in the superconducting chip, as well. Simulations concerning background rejection and calibration methods demonstrate the needed sub-eV sensitivity already.

We report on the coexistence of both normal and topological insulating phases in InAs/GaSb bilayer quantum well induced by the built-in electric field tuned optically and electrically. The emergence of topological and normal insulating phases is assessed based on the evolution of the charge carrier densities, the resistivity dependence of the gap via in-plane magnetic fields and the thermal activation of carriers. For the Hall bar device tuned optically, we observe the fingerprints associated with the presence of only the topological insulating phase. For another Hall bar processed identically but with an additional top gate, the coexistence of normal and topological insulating phases is found by electrical tuning. Our finding paves the way for utilizing a new electro-optical tuning scheme to manipulate InAs/GaSb bilayer quantum wells to obtain trivial-topological insulating interfaces in the bulk rather than at the physical edge of the device.

Axions and axion-like particles are hypothetical particles predicted in extensions of the standard model and are promising cold dark matter candidates. The Any Light Particle Search (ALPS II) experiment is a light-shining-through-the-wall experiment that aims to produce these particles from a strong light source and magnetic field and subsequently detect them through a reconversion into photons. With an expected rate $\sim$ 1 photon per day, a sensitive detection scheme needs to be employed and characterized. One foreseen detector is based on a transition edge sensor (TES). Here, we investigate machine and deep learning algorithms for the rejection of background events recorded with the TES. Many theories beyond the Standard Model of particle physics predict the existence of axionlike particles (ALPs) that mix with photons in the presence of a magnetic field. Searching for the effects of ALP-photon mixing in gamma-ray observations of blazars has provided some of the strongest constraints on ALP parameter space so far. Previously, only individual sources have been analysed. We perform a combined analysis on $\textit{Fermi}$ Large Area Telescope data of three bright, flaring flat-spectrum radio quasars, with the blazar jets themselves as the dominant mixing region. For the first time, we include a full treatment of photon-photon dispersion within the jet, and account for the uncertainty in our B-field model by leaving the field strength free in the fitting. Overall, we find no evidence for ALPs, but are able to exclude the ALP parameters $m_a\lesssim200$ neV and $g_{a\gamma}\gtrsim 5 \times 10^{-12}$ GeV$^{-1}$ with 95\% confidence., Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures; published Physical Review D; matches published version

The nearby GRB221009A at redshift $z=0.1505$ has been observed up to a maximum energy of 18 TeV with the LHAASO air shower array. The expected optical depth for a photon with energy $E_\gamma=18$ TeV varies between 9.4 and 27.1 according to existing models of the extra-galactic background light (EBL) in the relevant mid infra-red range. The resulting suppression of the flux in several (but not all) EBL models makes it for these EBL models unlikely that this photon could have been observed at the claimed energy. If the photon event and its energy are confirmed and possibly even more photons above 10 TeV have been observed, the photon-pair production process would have to be suppressed by mechanisms predicted in extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics. We consider the possibilities of photon mixing with a light pseudo-scalar (e.g., axion-like particles; ALPs) in the magnetic field of the host galaxy and the Milky Way and Lorentz invariance violation (LIV). In the case of photon-ALP mixing, the boost factor would reach values $\sim10^6$ for photon couplings not ruled out by the CAST experiment, but limited by other astrophysical constraints. Viable scenarios would require either very efficient mixing in or near to the GRB or that the largest part of the total luminosity is radiated at TeV energies, different from previous GRB afterglows. In the case of LIV, required boost factors are achievable for a LIV breaking energy scale $\lesssim 2\times 10^{29}$~eV ($\lesssim 4\times 10^{21}$~eV) for the linear (quadratic) modification of the dispersion relation. Gamma-rays, the most energetic photons, carry information from the far reaches of extragalactic space with minimal interaction or loss of information. They bring messages about particle acceleration in environments so extreme they cannot be reproduced on earth for a closer look. Gamma-ray astrophysics is so complementary with collider work that particle physicists and astroparticle physicists are often one in the same. Gamma-ray instruments, especially the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, have been pivotal in major multi-messenger discoveries over the past decade. There is presently a great deal of interest and scientific expertise available to push forward new technologies, to plan and build space- and ground-based gamma-ray facilities, and to build multi-messenger networks with gamma rays at their core. It is therefore concerning that before the community comes together for planning exercises again, much of that infrastructure could be lost to a lack of long-term planning for support of gamma-ray astrophysics. Gamma-rays with energies from the MeV to the EeV band are therefore central to multiwavelength and multi-messenger studies to everything from astroparticle physics with compact objects, to dark matter studies with diffuse large scale structure. These goals and new discoveries have generated a wave of new gamma-ray facility proposals and programs. This paper highlights new and proposed gamma-ray technologies and facilities that have each been designed to address specific needs in the measurement of extreme astrophysical sources that probe some of the most pressing questions in fundamental physics for the next decade. The proposed instrumentation would also address the priorities laid out in the recent Astro2020 Decadal Survey, a complementary study by the astrophysics community that provides opportunities also relevant to Snowmass., Comment: Contribution to Snowmass 2021

We present an incremental version (4FGL-DR3, for Data Release 3) of the fourth Fermi-LAT catalog of gamma-ray sources. Based on the first twelve years of science data in the energy range from 50 MeV to 1 TeV, it contains 6658 sources. The analysis improves on that used for the 4FGL catalog over eight years of data: more sources are fit with curved spectra, we introduce a more robust spectral parameterization for pulsars, and we extend the spectral points to 1 TeV. The spectral parameters, spectral energy distributions, and associations are updated for all sources. Light curves are rebuilt for all sources with 1 yr intervals (not 2 month intervals). Among the 5064 original 4FGL sources, 16 were deleted, 112 are formally below the detection threshold over 12 yr (but are kept in the list), while 74 are newly associated, 10 have an improved association, and seven associations were withdrawn. Pulsars are split explicitly between young and millisecond pulsars. Pulsars and binaries newly detected in LAT sources, as well as more than 100 newly classified blazars, are reported. We add three extended sources and 1607 new point sources, mostly just above the detection threshold, among which eight are considered identified, and 699 have a plausible counterpart at other wavelengths. We discuss degree-scale residuals to the global sky model and clusters of soft unassociated point sources close to the Galactic plane, which are possibly related to limitations of the interstellar emission model and missing extended sources., Comment: accepted in ApJS; follow-up paper to 1902.10045

Axionlike particles (ALPs) could mix with photons in the presence of astrophysical magnetic fields. Searching for this effect in gamma-ray observations of blazars has provided some of the strongest constraints on ALP parameter space so far. Previously, photon-photon dispersion of gamma-rays off of the CMB has been shown to be important for these calculations, and is universally included in ALP-photon mixing models. Here, we assess the effects of dispersion off of other photon fields within the blazar (produced by the accretion disk, the broad line region, the dust torus, starlight, and the synchrotron field) by modelling the jet and fields of the flat spectrum radio quasar 3C454.3 and propagating ALPs through the model both with and without the full dispersion calculation. We find that the full dispersion calculation can strongly affect the mixing, particularly at energies above 100 GeV -- often reducing the ALP-photon conversion probability. This could have implications for future searches planned with, e.g., the Cherenkov Telescope Array, particularly those looking for a reduced opacity of the universe at the highest energies., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review D

The Cherenkov Telescopic Array (CTA), the next-generation ground-based gamma-ray observatory, will have unprecedented sensitivity, providing answers to open questions in gamma-ray cosmology and fundamental physics. Using simulations of active galactic nuclei observations foreseen in the CTA Key Science Program, we find that CTA will measure gamma-ray absorption on the extragalactic background light with a statistical error below 15% up to the redshift of 2 and detect or establish limits on gamma halos induced by the intergalactic magnetic field of at least 0.3 pG. Extragalactic observations using CTA also demonstrate the potential for testing physics beyond the Standard Model. The best state-of-the-art constraints on the Lorentz invariance violation from astronomical gamma-ray observations will be improved at least two- to threefold. CTA will also probe the parameter space where axion-like particles can represent a significant proportion - if not all - of dark matter. Light axion-like particles (ALPs) are expected to be abundantly produced in core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe), resulting in a $\sim$10-second long burst of ALPs. These particles subsequently undergo conversion into gamma-rays in external magnetic fields to produce a long gamma-ray burst (GRB) with a characteristic spectrum peaking in the 30--100-MeV energy range. At the same time, CCSNe are invoked as progenitors of {\it ordinary} long GRBs, rendering it relevant to conduct a comprehensive search for ALP spectral signatures using the observations of long GRB with the \textit{Fermi} Large Area Telescope (LAT). We perform a data-driven sensitivity analysis to determine CCSN distances for which a detection of an ALP signal is possible with the LAT's low-energy (LLE) technique which, in contrast to the standard LAT analysis, allows for a a larger effective area for energies down to 30~MeV. Assuming an ALP mass $m_a \lesssim 10^{-10}$~eV and ALP-photon coupling $g_{a\gamma} = 5.3\times 10^{-12}$ GeV$^{-1}$, values considered and deduced in ALP searches from SN1987A, we find that the distance limit ranges from $\sim\!0.5$ to $\sim\!10$~Mpc, depending on the sky location and the CCSN progenitor mass. Furthermore, we select a candidate sample of twenty-four GRBs and carry out a model comparison analysis in which we consider different GRB spectral models with and without an ALP signal component. We find that the inclusion of an ALP contribution does not result in any statistically significant improvement of the fits to the data. Extreme high synchrotron peaked blazars (EHBLs) are amongst the most powerful accelerators found in nature. Usually the synchrotron peak frequency of an EHBL is above $10^{17}\,$Hz, i.e., lies in the range of medium to hard X-rays making them ideal sources to study particle acceleration and radiative processes. EHBL objects are commonly observed at energies beyond several TeV, making them also powerful probes of gamma-ray absorption in the intergalactic medium. During the last decade, several attempts have been made to increase the number of EHBL detected at TeV energies and probe their spectral characteristics. Here we report new detections of EHBLs in the TeV energy regime, each at a redshift of less than 0.2, by the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.). Also, we report on X-ray observations of these EHBLs candidates with Swift XRT. During a core-collapse supernova (SN), axion-like particles (ALPs) could be produced through the Primakoff process and subsequently convert into gamma rays in the magnetic field of the Milky Way. Using a sample of well studied extragalactic SNe at optical wavelengths, we estimate the time of the core collapse and search for a coincident gamma-ray burst with the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT). Under the assumption that at least one SN was contained within the LAT field of view, we exclude photon-ALP couplings within a factor of $\sim$5 of previous limits from SN1987A. With the increasing number of SNe observed with optical surveys, our results demonstrate the potential to probe ALP dark matter with combined optical and gamma-ray observations. We also provide preliminary results for the estimation of explosion times of 15 close-by SNe observed recently with ZTF. Axions and axion-like particles (ALPs) are hypothetical particles that occur in extensions of the Standard Model and are candidates for cold dark matter. They could be detected through their oscillations into photons in the presence of external electromagnetic fields. gammaALPs is an open-source python framework that computes the oscillation probability between photons and axions/ALPs. In addition to solving the photon-ALP equations of motion, gammaALPs includes models for magnetic fields in different astrophysical environments such as jets of active galactic nuclei, intra-cluster and intergalactic media, and the Milky Way. Users are also able to easily incorporate their own custom magnetic-field models. We review the basic functionality and features of gammaALPs, which is heavily based on other open-source scientific packages such as numpy and scipy. On 2019 October 25, the Fermi-Large Area Telescope observed the first gamma-ray flare from the radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLSy 1) galaxy PKS 2004$-$447 ($z=0.24$). We report on follow-up observations in the radio, optical-UV, and X-ray bands that were performed by ATCA, the Neil Gehrels Swift observatory, XMM-Newton, and NuSTAR, respectively, and our multi-wavelength analysis. We study the variability across all energy bands and additionally produce $\gamma$-ray light curves with different time binnings to study the variability on short timescales during the flare. We examine the X-ray spectrum from 0.5$-$50 keV by describing the spectral shape with an absorbed power law. We analyse multi-wavelength datasets before, during, and after the flare and compare these with a low activity state of the source by modelling the respective SEDs with a one-zone synchrotron inverse Compton radiative model. Finally, we compare our results to gamma-ray flares previously observed from other $\gamma$-loud NLSy 1 galaxies. At gamma-ray energies (0.1$-$300 GeV) the flare reached a total maximum flux of $(2.7\pm0.6)\times10^{-6}$~ph~cm$^{-2}$~s$^{-1}$ in 3-hour binning. With a photon index of $\Gamma_{0.1-300\mathrm{GeV}}=2.42\pm0.09$ during the flare, this corresponds to an isotropic gamma-ray luminosity of $(2.9\pm0.8)\times10^{47}\,\mathrm{erg}\,\mathrm{s}^{-1}$. The $\gamma$-ray, X-ray, and optical-UV light curves covering the end of September to the middle of November show significant variability, and we find indications for flux-doubling times of $\sim 2.2$~hours at $\gamma$-ray energies. During the flare, the SED exhibits large Compton dominance. While the increase in the optical-UV range can be explained by enhanced synchrotron emission, the elevated $\gamma$-ray flux can be accounted for by an increase in the bulk Lorentz factor of the jet, similarly observed for flaring gamma-ray blazars., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures. The exact mechanism for the production of fast $\gamma$-ray variability in blazars remains debated. Magnetic reconnection, in which plasmoids filled with relativistic particles and magnetic fields are formed, is a viable candidate to explain the broadband electromagnetic spectrum and variability of these objects. Using state-of-the-art magnetic reconnection simulations, we generate realistic $\gamma$-ray light curves that would be observed with the Fermi Large Area Telescope. A comparison with observed $\gamma$-ray flares from flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) reveals that magnetic reconnection events lead to comparable flux levels and variability patterns, in particular when the reconnection layer is slightly misaligned with the line of sight. Emission from fast plasmoids moving close to the line of sight could explain fast variability on the time scales of minutes for which evidence has been found in observations of FSRQs. Many theories beyond the Standard Model of particle physics predict the existence of axionlike particles (ALPs) that mix with photons in the presence of a magnetic field. One prominent indirect method of searching for ALPs is to look for irregularities in blazar gamma-ray spectra caused by ALP-photon mixing in astrophysical magnetic fields. This requires the modelling of magnetic fields between Earth and the blazar. So far, only very simple models for the magnetic field in the blazar jet have been used. Here we investigate the effects of more complicated jet magnetic field configurations on these spectral irregularities, by imposing a magnetic field structure model onto the jet model proposed by Potter & Cotter. We simulate gamma-ray spectra of Mrk 501 with ALPs and fit them to no-ALP spectra, scanning the ALP and B-field configuration parameter space and show that the jet can be an important mixing region, able to probe new ALP parameter space around $m_a\sim$ 1-1000 neV and $g_{a\gamma}\gtrsim$ $5\times10^{-12}$ GeV$^{-1}$. However, reasonable (i.e. consistent with observation) changes of the magnetic field structure can have a large effect on the mixing. For jets in highly magnetized clusters, mixing in the cluster can overpower mixing in the jet. During a core-collapse supernova (SN), axionlike particles (ALPs) could be produced through the Primakoff process and subsequently convert into $\gamma$ rays in the magnetic field of the Milky Way. Axion-like particles (ALPs), predicted in theories beyond the Standard Model, can have observational effects on the transparency of the Universe to $\gamma$ rays in the presence of magnetic fields. In this work, we search for effects compatible with the existence of ALPs with 80 months of data from the ${\it Fermi}$ Large Area Telescope, by comparing the distributions of observed highest energy photons from sources beyond redshifts of z $\geq$ 0.1 with theoretical predictions in the presence of ALPs. We find no evidence for an increased $\gamma$-ray transparency due to ALPs and therefore we set limits on the ALPs parameters assuming a value of the intergalactic magnetic field strength of 1 nG. Photon-ALP couplings above $10^{-11}$ GeV$^{-1}$ are excluded for ALP masses $m_{a}$ $\lesssim3.0$ neV. PKS 2023-07 is a flat spectrum radio quasar located at a redshift $z=1.388$, farther than any source currently detected at very high energies ($E>100$ GeV). At such energies, absorption by the extragalactic background light (EBL) renders the detection of distant sources particularly challenging. The High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) observed the source following reports from AGILE (April 2016) and Fermi-LAT (April 2016, September and October 2017) on high-flux states in gamma rays. During each of the three flaring periods, near-simultaneous observations were obtained with H.E.S.S., Fermi-LAT and multiple telescopes at other wavelengths. Though the source was not significantly detected by H.E.S.S., upper limits were derived for each observation period. The All-sky Medium Energy Gamma-ray Observatory (AMEGO) is a probe class mission concept that will provide essential contributions to multimessenger astrophysics in the late 2020s and beyond. AMEGO combines high sensitivity in the 200 keV to 10 GeV energy range with a wide field of view, good spectral resolution, and polarization sensitivity. Therefore, AMEGO is key in the study of multimessenger astrophysical objects that have unique signatures in the gamma-ray regime, such as neutron star mergers, supernovae, and flaring active galactic nuclei. The flat spectrum radio quasar PKS 1510-089 is a monitored target in many wavelength bands due to its high variability. It was detected as a very-high-energy (VHE) $\gamma$-ray emitter with H.E.S.S. in 2009, and has since been a regular target of VHE observations by the imaging Cherenkov observatories H.E.S.S. and MAGIC. In this paper, we summarize the current state of results focusing on the monitoring effort with H.E.S.S. and the discovery of a particularly strong VHE flare in 2016 with H.E.S.S. and MAGIC. While the source has now been established as a weak, but regular emitter at VHE, no correlation with other energy bands has been established. The era of precision cosmology has revealed that about 85% of the matter in the universe is dark matter. Two well-motivated candidates are weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) and weakly interacting sub-eV particles (WISPs) (e.g. axions). Both WIMPs and WISPs possess distinct {\gamma}-ray signatures. Over the last decade, data taken between 50 MeV to >300 GeV by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT) have provided stringent constraints on both classes of dark matter models. Thus far, there are no conclusive detections. However, there is an intriguing {\gamma}-ray excess associated with the Galactic center that could be explained by WIMP annihilation. At lower energies, the poor angular resolution of the Fermi-LAT makes source identification challenging, inhibiting our ability to more sensitively probe both the Galactic center excess, as well as lower-mass WIMP and WISP models. Additionally, targeted WISP searches (e.g., those probing supernovae and blazars) would greatly benefit from enhanced energy resolution and polarization measurements in the MeV range. To address these issues, a new telescope that is optimized for MeV observations is needed. Astrophysical observations currently provide the only robust, empirical measurements of dark matter. In the coming decade, astrophysical observations will guide other experimental efforts, while simultaneously probing unique regions of dark matter parameter space. This white paper summarizes astrophysical observations that can constrain the fundamental physics of dark matter in the era of LSST. We describe how astrophysical observations will inform our understanding of the fundamental properties of dark matter, such as particle mass, self-interaction strength, non-gravitational interactions with the Standard Model, and compact object abundances. We present the Spectroscopic Time-Resolving Observatory for Broadband Energy X-rays (STROBE-X), a probe-class mission concept selected for study by NASA. It combines huge collecting area, high throughput, broad energy coverage, and excellent spectral and temporal resolution in a single facility. STROBE-X offers an enormous increase in sensitivity for X-ray spectral timing, extending these techniques to extragalactic targets for the first time. It is also an agile mission capable of rapid response to transient events, making it an essential X-ray partner facility in the era of time-domain, multi-wavelength, and multi-messenger astronomy. Optimized for study of the most extreme conditions found in the Universe, its key science objectives include: (1) Robustly measuring mass and spin and mapping inner accretion flows across the black hole mass spectrum, from compact stars to intermediate-mass objects to active galactic nuclei. (2) Mapping out the full mass-radius relation of neutron stars using an ensemble of nearly two dozen rotation-powered pulsars and accreting neutron stars, and hence measuring the equation of state for ultradense matter over a much wider range of densities than explored by NICER. (3) Identifying and studying X-ray counterparts (in the post-Swift era) for multiwavelength and multi-messenger transients in the dynamic sky through cross-correlation with gravitational wave interferometers, neutrino observatories, and high-cadence time-domain surveys in other electromagnetic bands. (4) Continuously surveying the dynamic X-ray sky with a large duty cycle and high time resolution to characterize the behavior of X-ray sources over an unprecedentedly vast range of time scales. Almost 10 yr of $\gamma$-ray observations with the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) have revealed extreme $\gamma$-ray outbursts from flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs), temporarily making these objects the brightest $\gamma$-ray emitters in the sky. Yet, the location and mechanisms of the $\gamma$-ray emission remain elusive. We characterize long-term $\gamma$-ray variability and the brightest $\gamma$-ray flares of six FSRQs. Consecutively zooming in on the brightest flares, which we identify in an objective way through Bayesian blocks and a hill-climbing algorithm, we find variability on subhour time scales and as short as minutes for two sources in our sample (3C279, CTA102) and weak evidence for variability at time scales less than the Fermi satellite's orbit of 95 minutes for PKS1510-089 and 3C454.3. This suggests extremely compact emission regions in the jet. We do not find any signs for $\gamma$-ray absorption in the broad-line region (BLR), which indicates that $\gamma$-rays are produced at distances greater than hundreds of gravitational radii from the central black hole. This is further supported by a cross-correlation analysis between $\gamma$-ray and radio/millimeter light curves, which is consistent with $\gamma$-ray production at the same location as the millimeter core for 3C273, CTA102, and 3C454.3. The inferred locations of the $\gamma$-ray production zones are still consistent with the observed decay times of the brightest flares if the decay is caused by external Compton scattering with BLR photons. Astrophysical and cosmological observations currently provide the only robust, empirical measurements of dark matter. Future observations with Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) will provide necessary guidance for the experimental dark matter program. This white paper represents a community effort to summarize the science case for studying the fundamental physics of dark matter with LSST. We discuss how LSST will inform our understanding of the fundamental properties of dark matter, such as particle mass, self-interaction strength, non-gravitational couplings to the Standard Model, and compact object abundances. Additionally, we discuss the ways that LSST will complement other experiments to strengthen our understanding of the fundamental characteristics of dark matter. We propose a new method to search for axion-like particles (ALPs) based on the gamma-rays produced concomitant with high-energy astrophysical neutrinos. The existence of high-energy neutrinos implies production of gamma-rays in the same sources. Photons can convert into ALPs in the sources' magnetic fields, and will travel as ALPs through extragalactic space. Back-conversion in the Milky Way's magnetic field leads to a diffuse anisotropic high-energy photon flux that existing and upcoming gamma-ray detectors, like HAWC, CTA, and LHAASO can detect. This method probes unexplored ALP parameter space, with LHAASO being realistically sensitive to couplings above $10^{-11}\, \rm{GeV^{-1}}$ and masses up to $3\times 10^{-6} \, \rm{eV}$ in ten years. The extragalactic background light (EBL), from ultraviolet to infrared wavelengths, is predominantly due to emission from stars, accreting black holes and reprocessed light due to Galactic dust. The EBL can be studied through the imprint it leaves, via $\gamma$-$\gamma$ absorption of high-energy photons, in the spectra of distant $\gamma$-ray sources. The EBL has been probed through the search for the attenuation it produces in the spectra of BL Lacertae (BL Lac) objects and individual $\gamma$-ray bursts (GRBs). GRBs have significant advantages over blazars for the study of the EBL especially at high redshifts. Here we analyze a combined sample of twenty-two GRBs, detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope between 65 MeV and 500 GeV. We report a marginal detection (at the ~2.8 $\sigma$ level) of the EBL attenuation in the stacked spectra of the source sample. This measurement represents a first constraint of the EBL at an effective redshift of ~1.8. We combine our results with prior EBL constraints and conclude that Fermi-LAT is instrumental to constrain the UV component of the EBL. We report on preliminary results from the Fermi High-Latitude Extended Sources Catalog (FHES), a comprehensive search for spatially extended gamma-ray sources at high Galactic latitudes ($|b|>5^\circ$) based on data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT). While the majority of high-latitude LAT sources are extragalactic blazars that appear point-like within the LAT angular resolution, there are several physics scenarios that predict the existence of populations of spatially extended sources. If Dark Matter consists of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles, the annihilation or decay of these particles in subhalos of the Milky Way would appear as a population of unassociated gamma-ray sources with finite angular extent. Gamma-ray emission from blazars could also be extended (so-called pair halos) due to the deflection of electron-positron pairs in the intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF). The pairs are produced in the absorption of gamma rays in the intergalactic medium and subsequently up-scatter photons of background radiation fields to gamma-ray energies. Measurement of pair halos could provide constraints on the strength and coherence length scale of the IGMF. In a dedicated search, we find 21 extended sources and 16 sources not previously characterized as extended. Limits on the flux of the extended source components are used to derive constraints on the strength of the IGMF using spectral and spatial templates derived from Monte Carlo simulations of electromagnetic cascades. The measurement of $\gamma$-rays originating from active galactic nuclei offers the unique opportunity to study the propagation of very-high-energy photons over cosmological distances. Most prominently, $\gamma$-rays interact with the extragalactic background light (EBL) to produce $e^+e^-$ pairs, imprinting an attenuation signature on $\gamma$-ray spectra. The $e^+e^-$ pairs can also induce electromagnetic cascades whose detectability in $\gamma$-rays depends on the intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF). Furthermore, physics beyond the Standard Model such as Lorentz invariance violation (LIV) or oscillations between photons and weakly interacting sub-eV particles (WISPs) could affect the propagation of $\gamma$-rays. The future Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), with its unprecedented $\gamma$-ray source sensitivity, as well as enhanced energy and spatial resolution at very high energies, is perfectly suited to study cosmological effects on $\gamma$-ray propagation. Imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) that are sensitive to potential $\gamma$-ray signals from dark matter (DM) annihilation above $\sim50$ GeV will soon be superseded by the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). CTA will have a point source sensitivity an order of magnitude better than currently operating IACTs and will cover a broad energy range between 20 GeV and 300 TeV. Using effective field theory and simplified models to calculate $\gamma$-ray spectra resulting from DM annihilation, we compare the prospects to constrain such models with CTA observations of the Galactic center with current and near-future measurements at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and direct detection experiments. Axionlike particles (ALPs) are a common prediction of theories beyond the Standard Model of particle physics that could explain the entirety of the cold dark matter. These particles could be detected through their mixing with photons in external electromagnetic fields. Here, we provide a short review over ALP searches that utilize astrophysical $\gamma$-ray observations. In a Galactic core-collapse supernova (SN), axionlike particles (ALPs) could be emitted via the Primakoff process and eventually convert into $\gamma$ rays in the magnetic field of the Milky Way. From a data-driven sensitivity estimate, we find that, for a SN exploding in our Galaxy, the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) would be able to explore the photon-ALP coupling down to $g_{a\gamma} \simeq 2 \times 10^{-13}\,$GeV$^{-1}$ for an ALP mass $m_a \lesssim 10^{-9}\,$eV. These values are out of reach of next generation laboratory experiments. In this event, the Fermi LAT would probe large regions of the ALP parameter space invoked to explain the anomalous transparency of the Universe to $\gamma$ rays, stellar cooling anomalies, and cold dark matter. The nature of dark matter is a longstanding enigma of physics; it may consist of particles beyond the Standard Model that are still elusive to experiments. Among indirect search techniques, which look for stable products from the annihilation or decay of dark matter particles, or from axions coupling to high-energy photons, observations of the $\gamma$-ray sky have come to prominence over the last few years, because of the excellent sensitivity of the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope mission. The LAT energy range from 20 MeV to above 300 GeV is particularly well suited for searching for products of the interactions of dark matter particles. In this report we describe methods used to search for evidence of dark matter with the LAT, and review the status of searches performed with up to six years of LAT data. We also discuss the factors that determine the sensitivities of these searches, including the magnitudes of the signals and the relevant backgrounds, considering both statistical and systematic uncertainties. We project the expected sensitivities of each search method for 10 and 15 years of LAT data taking. In particular, we find that the sensitivity of searches targeting dwarf galaxies, which provide the best limits currently, will improve faster than the square root of observing time. Current LAT limits for dwarf galaxies using six years of data reach the thermal relic level for masses up to 120 GeV for the $b\bar{b}$ annihilation channel for reasonable dark matter density profiles. With projected discoveries of additional dwarfs, these limits could extend to about 250 GeV. With as much as 15 years of LAT data these searches would be sensitive to dark matter annihilations at the thermal relic cross section for masses to greater than 400 GeV (200 GeV) in the $b\bar{b}$ ($\tau^+ \tau^-$) annihilation channels., Comment: Updated with a few additional and corrected references; otherwise, text is identical to previous version. Very high energy (VHE; energy $E \gtrsim 100\,$GeV) $\gamma$-rays originating from extragalactic sources undergo pair production with low-energy photons of background radiation fields. These pairs can inverse-Compton-scatter background photons, initiating an electromagnetic cascade. The spatial and temporal structure of this secondary $\gamma$-ray signal is altered as the $e^+e^-$ pairs are deflected in an intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF). We investigate how VHE observations with the future Cherenkov Telescope Array with its high angular resolution and broad energy range, can potentially probe the IGMF. We identify promising sources and simulate $\gamma$-ray spectra over a wide range of values of the IGMF strength and coherence length using the publicly available ELMAG Monte Carlo code. Combining simulated observations in a joint likelihood approach, we find that current limits on the IGMF can be significantly improved. We present constraints on the nature of axions and axionlike particles (ALPs) by analyzing gamma--ray data from neutron stars using the Fermi Large Area Telescope. In addition to axions solving the strong CP problem of particle physics, axions and ALPs are also possible dark matter candidates. We investigate axions and ALPs produced by nucleon--nucleon bremsstrahlung within neutron stars. We derive a phenomenological model for the gamma--ray spectrum arising from subsequent axion decays. By analyzing 5 years of gamma-ray data (between 60 MeV and 200 MeV) for a sample of 4 nearby neutron stars, we do not find evidence for an axion or ALP signal, thus we obtain a combined 95\% confidence level upper limit on the axion mass of 7.9$\times 10^{-2}$ eV, which corresponds to a lower limit for the Peccei-Quinn scale $f_a$ of 7.6$\times 10^7$ GeV. Axion-like particles (ALPs) are a common prediction of certain theories beyond the Standard Model and couple to photons in the presence of external magnetic fields. As a consequence, photon-ALP conversions could lead to an enhancement of the flux of extragalactic gamma-ray sources that is otherwise attenuated due to the interactions with background radiation fields. The magnetic fields traversed by the gamma rays are often turbulent and frequently modelled with a simple domain-like structure. Given a maximum mixing between photons and ALPs, we show that in such models realisations of the fields exist for which the photon-ALP oscillation probability vanishes. Background radiation fields pervade the Universe, and above a certain energy any $\gamma$-ray flux emitted by an extragalactic source should be attenuated due to $e^+e^-$ pair production. The opacity could be alleviated if photons oscillated into hypothetical axion-like particles (ALPs) in ambient magnetic fields, leading to a $\gamma$-ray excess especially at high optical depths that could be detected with imaging air Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs). Here, we introduce a method to search for such a signal in $\gamma$-ray data and to estimate sensitivities for future observations. Different magnetic fields close to the $\gamma$-ray source are taken into account in which photons can convert into ALPs that then propagate unimpeded over cosmological distances until they re-convert in the magnetic field of the Milky Way. Specifically, we consider the coherent field at parsec scales in a blazar jet as well as the turbulent field inside a galaxy cluster. For the latter, we explicitly derive the transversal components of a magnetic field with gaussian turbulence which are responsible for the photon-ALP mixing. To illustrate the method, we apply it to a mock IACT array with characteristics similar to the Cherenkov Telescope Array and investigate the dependence of the sensitivity to detect a $\gamma$-ray excess on the magnetic-field parameters., Comment: 31 pages, 9 figures. Very high energy (VHE) gamma-rays undergo pair production with low energy photons of background radiation fields. This leads to an attenuation of the primary gamma-ray flux of extragalactic sources in the interaction with the extragalactic background light (EBL) which stretches from ultraviolet to far-infrared wavelengths. In the presence of magnetic fields, gamma-rays could oscillate into hypothetical axion-like particles (ALPs). This might lead to a reduced opacity of the Universe for VHE gamma-rays, as ALPs circumvent pair production. Here, the impact of photon-ALP conversions on the spectrum of PKS1424+240 is demonstrated. A lower limit on the redshift of this blazar was recently determined to be $z \geqslant 0.6035$, making it the farthest source ever observed at VHE energies. The propagation of high energy (HE, $E_\gamma>100$ MeV) and very high-energy gamma-rays (VHE, $E_\gamma>100$ GeV) in the extra-galactic photon field leads to pair-production and consequently energy- and distance-dependent attenuation of the primary intensity. The spectroscopy of an increasing number of extra-galactic objects at HE and VHE energies has demonstrated indeed the presence of such an attenuation which in turn has been used to constrain the photon density in the medium. At large optical depth ($\tau\gtrsim 2$) potential modifications of pair-production due to competing but rare processes (as, e.g., the presence of sub-neV axion-like particle) may be found. Indications for a pair-production anomaly have previously been found with VHE-spectra. The intrinsic flux of very high energy (VHE, Energy > 100 GeV) gamma-rays from extragalactic sources is attenuated due to pair production in the interaction with photons of the extragalactic background light (EBL). Depending on the distance of the source, the Universe should be opaque to VHE photons above a certain energy. However, indications exist that the Universe is more transparent than previously thought. A recent statistical analysis of a large sample of VHE spectra shows that the correction for absorption with current EBL models is too strong for the data points with the highest attenuation. An explanation might be the oscillation of VHE photons into hypothetical axion-like particles (ALPs) in ambient magnetic fields. This mechanism would decrease the opacity as ALPs propagate unimpeded over cosmological distances. Here, a large sample of VHE gamma-ray spectra obtained with imaging air Cherenkov telescopes is used to set, for the first time, lower limits on the photon-ALP coupling constant over a large range of ALP masses. The conversion in different magnetic field configurations, including intra-cluster and intergalactic magnetic fields together with the magnetic field of the Milky Way, is investigated taking into account the energy dependence of the oscillations. For optimistic scenarios of the intervening magnetic fields, a lower limit on the photon-ALP coupling of the order of $10^{-12}\mathrm{GeV}^{-1}$ is obtained whereas more conservative model assumptions result in $2\times10^{-11}\mathrm{GeV}^{-1}$. A fraction of AGN producing VHE gamma-rays are located in galaxy clusters. The magnetic field present in the intra-cluster medium would lead to conversions of VHE photons into axion-like particles (ALPs), which are a generic prediction of several extensions of the Standard Model. ALPs produced in this way would traverse cosmological distances unaffected by the extragalactic background light at variance with VHE photons which undergo a substantial absorption. Eventually, a nontrivial fraction of ALPs would re-convert into VHE photons in the magnetic field of the Milky Way. This mechanism produces a significant hardening of the VHE spectrum of AGN in galaxy clusters. As a specific example we consider the energy spectra of two observed VHE gamma-ray sources located in galaxy clusters, namely 1ES 0414+009 at redshift z=0.287 and Mkn 501 at z=0.034. We find that the hardening in the observed spectra becomes relevant at E > 1 TeV. The detection of this signature would allow to indirectly probe the existence of ultra-light ALPs with mass m_a < 10^{-8} eV and photon-ALP coupling g_{a gamma} < 10^{-10} GeV^{-1} with the presently operating Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes like H.E.S.S., MAGIC, VERITAS and CANGAROO-III and even more likely with the planned detectors like CTA, HAWC and HiSCORE. An independent laboratory check of ultra-light ALPs invoked in this mechanism can be performed with the planned upgrade of the photon regeneration experiment ALPS at DESY and with the next generation solar axion detector IAXO., Comment: (v3:18 pages, 10 eps figures. The extragalactic background light (EBL), i.e., the diffuse meta-galactic photon field in the ultraviolet to infrared, is dominated by the emission from stars in galaxies. It is, therefore, intimately connected with the integrated star formation rate density (SFRD). In this paper, the SFRD is constrained using recent limits on the EBL density derived from observations of distant sources of high and very-high energy gamma-rays. The stellar EBL contribution is modeled utilizing simple stellar population spectra including dust attenuation and emission. For modeling the SFRD up to z=4 a broken power law function in z+1 is assumed. A wide range of values for the different model parameters (SFRD(z), metallicity, dust absorption) is investigated and their impact on the resulting EBL is studied. The calculated EBL densities are compared with the specific EBL density limits and constraints on the SFRD are derived. For the fiducial model, adopting a Chabrier initial mass function (IMF) and a second power law index for the SFRD of beta=0.3, the SFRD is constrained to <~ 0.1 M_solar yr^-1 Mpc^-3 and < 0.2 M_solar yr^-1 Mpc^-3 for a redshift of z~1 and z~2, respectively. The limits for a redshift of z~1 are in tension with SFRD measurements derived from instantaneous star formation tracers. Very high energy (VHE, energy $E \gtrsim 100$\,GeV) \gamma-rays from cosmological sources are attenuated due to the interaction with photons of the extragalactic background light (EBL) in the ultraviolet to infrared wavelength band. The EBL, thus, leaves an imprint on the observed energy spectra of these objects. In the last four years, the number of extragalactic VHE sources discovered with imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs), such as MAGIC, H.E.S.S., and VERITAS, has doubled. Furthermore, the measurements of the \emph{Fermi} satellite brought new insights into the intrinsic spectra of the sources at GeV energies. In this paper, upper limits on the EBL intensity are derived by considering the most extensive VHE source sample ever used in this context. This is accomplished by constructing a large number of generic EBL shapes and combining spectral informations from \emph{Fermi} and IACTs together with minimal assumptions about the source physics at high and very high \gamma-ray energies. The evolution of the EBL with redshift is accounted for and the possibility of the formation of an electromagnetic cascade and the implications on the upper limits are explored. The EBL density at $z=0$ is constrained over a broad wavelength range between 0.4 and 100\,\mu m.
