Particle flow (PFL) is an effective method for overcoming particle degeneracy, the main limitation of particle filtering. In PFL, particles are migrated towards regions of high likelihood based on the solution of a partial differential equation. Recently proposed stochastic PFL introduces a diffusion term in the ordinary differential equation (ODE) that describes particle motion. This diffusion term reduces the stiffness of the ODE and makes it possible to perform PFL with a lower number of numerical integration steps compared to traditional deterministic PFL. In this work, we introduce a general approach to perform importance sampling (IS) based on stochastic PFL. Our method makes it possible to evaluate a "flow-induced" proposal probability density function (PDF) after the parameters of a Gaussian mixture model (GMM) have been migrated by stochastic PFL. Compared to conventional stochastic PFL, the resulting processing step is asymptotically optimal. Within our method, it is possible to optimize the diffusion matrix that describes the diffusion term of the ODE to improve the accuracy-computational complexity tradeoff. Our simulation results in a highly nonlinear 3-D source localization scenario showcase a reduced stiffness of the ODE and an improved estimating accuracy compared to state-of-the-art deterministic and stochastic PFL.

Navigation and source localization in the undersea environment are challenged by the absence of a ubiquitous positioning system. Passive acoustic ranging offers a valuable means of obtaining location information underwater. We present a range estimation method based on waveguide invariant (WI) theory, using ship noise recorded by a hydrophone as an acoustic source. The WI is a scalar parameter that describes the interference patterns in spectrograms caused by the interaction of acoustic wave modes propagating in a waveguide, such as shallow water. WI theory enables ranging using a single receiver without detailed knowledge of the environment. In this paper, underwater acoustic signals radiated by a moving large ship, which include broadband and tonal components, are employed for WI-based ranging in a range-independent shallow water environment. In particular, we develop a likelihood function for WI-based range estimation by introducing a statistical model for high signal-to-noise ratio scenarios. Here, the broadband component is assumed to dominate the background noise. The effectiveness of the proposed range estimation method is demonstrated using real acoustic measurements of a moving container ship recorded during the Seabed Characterization Experiment 2017 (SBCEX17).

Multiobject tracking (MOT) is an important task in robotics, autonomous driving, and maritime surveillance. Traditional work on MOT is model-based and aims to establish algorithms in the framework of sequential Bayesian estimation. More recent methods are fully data-driven and rely on the training of neural networks. The two approaches have demonstrated advantages in certain scenarios. In particular, in problems where plenty of labeled data for the training of neural networks is available, data-driven MOT tends to have advantages compared to traditional methods. A natural thought is whether a general and efficient framework can integrate the two approaches. This paper advances a recently introduced hybrid model-based and data-driven method called neural-enhanced belief propagation (NEBP). Compared to existing work on NEBP for MOT, it introduces a novel neural architecture that can improve data association and new object initialization, two critical aspects of MOT. The proposed tracking method is leading the nuScenes LiDAR-only tracking challenge at the time of submission of this paper.

In future wireless networks, the availability of information on the position of mobile agents and the propagation environment can enable new services and increase the throughput and robustness of communications. Multipath-based simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) aims at estimating the position of agents and reflecting features in the environment by exploiting the relationship between the local geometry and multipath components (MPCs) in received radio signals. Existing multipath-based SLAM methods preprocess received radio signals using a channel estimator. The channel estimator lowers the data rate by extracting a set of dispersion parameters for each MPC. These parameters are then used as measurements for SLAM. Bayesian estimation for multipath-based SLAM is facilitated by the lower data rate. However, due to finite resolution capabilities limited by signal bandwidth, channel estimation is prone to errors and MPC parameters may be extracted incorrectly and lead to a reduced SLAM performance. We propose a multipath-based SLAM approach that directly uses received radio signals as inputs. A new statistical model that can effectively be represented by a factor graph is introduced. The factor graph is the starting point for the development of an efficient belief propagation (BP) method for multipath-based SLAM that avoids data preprocessing by a channel estimator. Numerical results based on synthetic and real data in challenging single-input, single-output (SISO) scenarios demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms conventional methods in terms of localization and mapping accuracy.

Localization using time-difference of arrival (TDOA) has myriad applications, e.g., in passive surveillance systems and marine mammal research. In this paper, we present a Bayesian estimation method that can localize an unknown number of static sources in 3-D based on TDOA measurements. The proposed localization algorithm based on particle flow (PFL) can overcome the challenges related to the highly nonlinear TDOA measurement model, the data association (DA) uncertainty, and the uncertainty in the number of sources to be localized. Different PFL strategies are compared within a unified belief propagation (BP) framework in a challenging multisensor source localization problem. In particular, we consider PFL-based approximation of beliefs based on one or multiple Gaussian kernels with parameters computed using deterministic and stochastic flow processes. Our numerical results demonstrate that the proposed method can correctly determine the number of sources and provide accurate location estimates. We introduce an Invertible Symbolic Regression (ISR) method. It is a machine learning technique that generates analytical relationships between inputs and outputs of a given dataset via invertible maps (or architectures). The proposed ISR method naturally combines the principles of Invertible Neural Networks (INNs) and Equation Learner (EQL), a neural network-based symbolic architecture for function learning. In particular, we transform the affine coupling blocks of INNs into a symbolic framework, resulting in an end-to-end differentiable symbolic invertible architecture that allows for efficient gradient-based learning. The proposed ISR framework also relies on sparsity promoting regularization, allowing the discovery of concise and interpretable invertible expressions. We show that ISR can serve as a (symbolic) normalizing flow for density estimation tasks. Furthermore, we highlight its practical applicability in solving inverse problems, including a benchmark inverse kinematics problem, and notably, a geoacoustic inversion problem in oceanography aimed at inferring posterior distributions of underlying seabed parameters from acoustic signals.

In many multiobject tracking applications, including radar and sonar tracking, after prefiltering the received signal, measurement data is typically structured in cells. The cells, e.g., represent different range and bearing values. However, conventional multiobject tracking methods use so-called point measurements. Point measurements are provided by a preprocessing stage that applies a threshold or detector and breaks up the cell's structure by converting cell indexes into, e.g., range and bearing measurements. We here propose a Bayesian multiobject tracking method that processes measurements that have been thresholded but are still cell-structured. We first derive a likelihood function that systematically incorporates an adjustable detection threshold which makes it possible to control the number of cell measurements. We then propose a Poisson Multi-Bernoulli (PMB) filter based on the likelihood function for cell measurements. Furthermore, we establish a link to the conventional point measurement model by deriving the likelihood function for point measurements with amplitude information (AM) and discuss the PMB filter that uses point measurements with AM. We introduce a Bayesian estimation approach for the passive localization of an acoustic source in shallow water using a single mobile receiver. The proposed probabilistic focalization method estimates the time-varying source location in the presence of measurement-origin uncertainty. In particular, probabilistic data association is performed to match time-differences-of-arrival (TDOA) observations extracted from the acoustic signal to TDOAs predictions provided by the statistical model. The performance of our approach is evaluated using real acoustic data recorded by a single mobile receiver.

Multicellular self-assembly into functional structures is a dynamic process that is critical in the development and diseases, including embryo development, organ formation, tumor invasion, and others. Being able to infer collective cell migratory dynamics from their static configuration is valuable for both understanding and predicting these complex processes. However, the identification of structural features that can indicate multicellular motion has been difficult, and existing metrics largely rely on physical instincts. In this work, we develop a multipath-based simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) method that can directly be applied to received radio signals. In existing multipath-based SLAM approaches, a channel estimator is used as a preprocessing stage that reduces data flow and computational complexity by extracting features related to multipath components (MPCs). We aim to avoid any preprocessing stage that may lead to a loss of relevant information. The presented method relies on a new statistical model for the data generation process of the received radio signal that can be represented by a factor graph. This factor graph is the starting point for the development of an efficient belief propagation (BP) method for multipath-based SLAM that directly uses received radio signals as measurements. Simulation results in a realistic scenario with a single-input single-output (SISO) channel demonstrate that the proposed direct method for radio-based SLAM outperforms state-of-the-art methods that rely on a channel estimator.

We present a factor graph formulation and particle-based sum-product algorithm for robust localization and tracking in multipath-prone environments. The proposed sequential algorithm jointly estimates the mobile agent's position together with a time-varying number of multipath components (MPCs). The MPCs are represented by "delay biases" corresponding to the offset between line-of-sight (LOS) component delay and the respective delays of all detectable MPCs. The delay biases of the MPCs capture the geometric features of the propagation environment with respect to the mobile agent. Therefore, they can provide position-related information contained in the MPCs without explicitly building a map of the environment. We demonstrate that the position-related information enables the algorithm to provide high-accuracy position estimates even in fully obstructed line-of-sight (OLOS) situations. Using simulated and real measurements in different scenarios we demonstrate that the proposed algorithm significantly outperforms state-of-the-art multipath-aided tracking algorithms and show that the performance of our algorithm constantly attains the posterior Cramer-Rao lower bound (P-CRLB). Joint probabilistic data association (JPDA) filter methods and multiple hypothesis tracking (MHT) methods are widely used for multitarget tracking (MTT). However, they are known to exhibit undesirable behavior in tracking scenarios with targets in close proximity: JPDA filter methods suffer from the track coalescence effect, i.e., the estimated tracks of targets in close proximity tend to merge and can become indistinguishable, and MHT methods suffer from an opposite effect known as track repulsion. In this paper, we review the JPDA filter and MHT methods and discuss the track coalescence and track repulsion effects. We also consider a more recent methodology for MTT that is based on the belief propagation (BP) algorithm, and we argue that BP-based MTT exhibits significantly reduced track coalescence and no track repulsion. Tracking an unknown number of low-observable objects is notoriously challenging. This letter proposes a sequential Bayesian estimation method based on the track-before-detect (TBD) approach. In TBD, raw sensor measurements are directly used by the tracking algorithm without any preprocessing. Our proposed method is based on a new statistical model that introduces a new object hypothesis for each data cell of the raw sensor measurements. It allows objects to interact and contribute to more than one data cell. Based on the factor graph representing our statistical model, we derive the message passing equations of the proposed belief propagation (BP) method for TBD. Approximations are applied to certain BP messages to reduce computational complexity and improve scalability. In a simulation experiment, our proposed BP-based TBD method outperforms two other state-of-the-art TBD methods.

This paper introduces a statistical model and corresponding sequential Bayesian estimation method for terrain-based navigation using side-scan sonar (SSS) data. The presented approach relies on slant range measurements extracted from the received ping of a SSS. In particular, incorporating slant range measurements to landmarks for navigation constrains the location and altitude error of an autonomous platform in GPS-denied environments. The proposed navigation filter consists of a prediction step based on the unscented transform and an update step that relies on particle filtering. The SSS measurement model aims to capture the highly nonlinear nature of SSS data while maintaining reasonable computational requirements in the particle-based update step. For our numerical results, we assume a scenario with a surface vehicle that performs SSS and compass measurements. The simulated scenario is consistent with our current hardware platform. We also discuss how the proposed method can be extended to autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) in a straightforward way and why the combination of SSS sensor and compass is particularly suitable for small autonomous platforms., Comment: 8 pages

Passive acoustics can provide a variety of capabilities with applications in oceanographic research and maritime situational awareness. In this paper, we develop a method for the navigation of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) in shallow water. Our approach relies on passively recorded signals from acoustic sources of opportunities (SOOs). By making use of the waveguide invariant, a measurement of the range to the SOO is extracted from the spectrogram of a single hydrophone. Range extraction requires knowledge of the range rate, i.e., the radial velocity between the SOO and AUV, computed from the pressure fields at different time intervals. A particle-based navigation filter fuses the range measurements with the AUV's internal velocity and heading measurements. As a result, the position error, which would otherwise increase over time, can be bounded. The ability to compute the range rate and range measurements from the pressure field measured using a single hydrophone is demonstrated on real data from the SWellEx-96 experiment. The capability of the developed navigation filter is shown based on synthetic data generated by the normal mode program KRAKEN.

Cooperative localization (CL) is an important technology for innovative services such as location-aware communication networks, modern convenience, and public safety. We consider wireless networks with mobile agents that aim to localize themselves by performing pairwise measurements amongst agents and exchanging their location information. Belief propagation (BP) is a state-of-the-art Bayesian method for CL. In CL, particle-based implementations of BP often are employed that can cope with non-linear measurement models and state dynamics. However, particle-based BP algorithms are known to suffer from particle degeneracy in large and dense networks of mobile agents with high-dimensional states. This paper derives the messages of BP for CL by means of particle flow, leading to the development of a distributed particle-based message-passing algorithm which avoids particle degeneracy. Our combined particle flow-based BP approach allows the calculation of highly accurate proposal distributions for agent states with a minimal number of particles. It outperforms conventional particle-based BP algorithms in terms of accuracy and runtime. Furthermore, we compare the proposed method to a centralized particle flow-based implementation, known as the exact Daum-Huang filter, and to sigma point BP in terms of position accuracy, runtime, and memory requirement versus the network size. We further contrast all methods to the theoretical performance limit provided by the posterior Cram\'er-Rao lower bound (PCRLB). Passive monitoring of acoustic or radio sources has important applications in modern convenience, public safety, and surveillance. A key task in passive monitoring is multiobject tracking (MOT). This paper presents a Bayesian method for multisensor MOT for challenging tracking problems where the object states are high-dimensional, and the measurements follow a nonlinear model. Our method is developed in the framework of factor graphs and the sum-product algorithm (SPA) and implemented using random samples or "particles". The multimodal probability density functions (pdfs) provided by the SPA are effectively represented by a Gaussian mixture model (GMM). To perform the operations of the SPA with improved sample efficiency, we make use of Particle flow (PFL). Here, particles are migrated towards regions of high likelihood based on the solution of a partial differential equation. This makes it possible to obtain good object detection and tracking performance even in challenging multisensor MOT scenarios with single sensor measurements that have a lower dimension than the object positions. We perform a numerical evaluation in a passive acoustic monitoring scenario where multiple sources are tracked in 3-D from 1-D time-difference-of-arrival (TDOA) measurements provided by pairs of hydrophones. Location-aware networks will introduce new services and applications for modern convenience, surveillance, and public safety. In this paper, we consider the problem of cooperative localization in a wireless network where the position of certain anchor nodes can be controlled. We introduce an active planning method that aims at moving the anchors such that the information gain of future measurements is maximized. In the control layer of the proposed method, control inputs are calculated by minimizing the traces of approximate inverse Bayesian Fisher information matrixes (FIMs). The estimation layer computes estimates of the agent states and provides Gaussian representations of marginal posteriors of agent positions to the control layer for approximate Bayesian FIM computations. Based on a cost function that accumulates Bayesian FIM contributions over a sliding window of discrete future timesteps, a receding horizon (RH) control is performed. Approximations that make it possible to solve the resulting tree-search problem efficiently are also discussed. Algorithmic solutions for multi-object tracking (MOT) are a key enabler for applications in autonomous navigation and applied ocean sciences. State-of-the-art MOT methods fully rely on a statistical model and typically use preprocessed sensor data as measurements. In particular, measurements are produced by a detector that extracts potential object locations from the raw sensor data collected for a discrete time step. This preparatory processing step reduces data flow and computational complexity but may result in a loss of information. State-of-the-art Bayesian MOT methods that are based on belief propagation (BP) systematically exploit graph structures of the statistical model to reduce computational complexity and improve scalability. However, as a fully model-based approach, BP can only provide suboptimal estimates when there is a mismatch between the statistical model and the true data-generating process. Existing BP-based MOT methods can further only make use of preprocessed measurements. In this paper, we introduce a variant of BP that combines model-based with data-driven MOT. The proposed neural enhanced belief propagation (NEBP) method complements the statistical model of BP by information learned from raw sensor data. This approach conjectures that the learned information can reduce model mismatch and thus improve data association and false alarm rejection. Our NEBP method improves tracking performance compared to model-based methods. At the same time, it inherits the advantages of BP-based MOT, i.e., it scales only quadratically in the number of objects, and it can thus generate and maintain a large number of object tracks. We evaluate the performance of our NEBP approach for MOT on the nuScenes autonomous driving dataset and demonstrate that it has state-of-the-art performance.

Multipath-based simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) is an emerging paradigm for accurate indoor localization with limited resources. The goal of multipath-based SLAM is to detect and localize radio reflective surfaces to support the estimation of time-varying positions of mobile agents. Radio reflective surfaces are typically represented by so-called virtual anchors (VAs), which are mirror images of base stations at the actual surfaces. In existing multipath-based SLAM methods, a VA is introduced for each propagation path, even if the goal is to map the reflective surfaces. The fact that not every reflective surface but every propagation path is modeled by a VA, complicates a consistent combination "fusion" of statistical information across multiple paths and base stations and thus limits the accuracy and mapping speed of existing multipath-based SLAM methods. In this paper, we introduce an improved statistical model and estimation method that enables data fusion for multipath-based SLAM by representing each surface by a single master virtual anchor (MVA). We further develop a particle-based sum-product algorithm (SPA) that performs probabilistic data association to compute marginal posterior distributions of MVA and agent positions efficiently. A key aspect of the proposed estimation method based on MVAs is to check the availability of singlebounce and double-bounce propagation paths at a specific agent position by means of ray-launching. The availability check is directly integrated into the statistical model by providing detection probabilities for probabilistic data association. Localizing and tracking of marine mammals can reveal key insights into behaviors underwater that otherwise would remain unexplored. A promising nonintrusive approach to obtaining location information of marine mammals is based on recordings of bio-acoustic signals by volumetric hydrophone arrays. Time-difference-of-arrival (TDOA) measurements of echolocation clicks emitted by odontocetes can be extracted and used for detection, localization, and tracking in 3-D. We propose a data processing chain that automatically detects and tracks multiple odontocetes in 3-D from their echolocation clicks. First, TDOA measurements are extracted with a generalized cross-correlation that whitens received acoustic signals based on instrument noise statistics. Subsequently, odontocetes are tracked in the TDOA domain using a graph-based multi-target tracking (MTT) method to reject false TDOA measurements and close gaps of missed detections. The resulting TDOA estimates are then used by another graph-based MTT stage that estimates odontocete tracks in 3-D. The tracking capability of the proposed data processing chain is demonstrated on real acoustic data provided by two volumetric hydrophone arrays that recorded echolocation clicks from Cuvier's beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris). This paper presents a Bayesian estimation method for sequential direction finding. The proposed method estimates the number of directions of arrivals (DOAs) and their DOAs performing operations on the factor graph. The graph represents a statistical model for sequential beamforming. At each time step, belief propagation predicts the number of DOAs and their DOAs using posterior probability density functions (pdfs) from the previous time and a different Bernoulli-von Mises state transition model. Variational Bayesian inference then updates the number of DOAs and their DOAs. The method promotes sparse solutions through a Bernoulli-Gaussian amplitude model, is gridless, and provides marginal posterior pdfs from which DOA estimates and their uncertainties can be extracted. Compared to nonsequential approaches, the method can reduce DOA estimation errors in scenarios involving multiple time steps and time-varying DOAs. In this paper, we propose a Poisson multi-Bernoulli (PMB) filter for extended object tracking (EOT), which directly estimates the set of object trajectories, using belief propagation (BP). The proposed filter propagates a PMB density on the posterior of sets of trajectories through the filtering recursions over time, where the PMB mixture (PMBM) posterior after the update step is approximated as a PMB. The efficient PMB approximation relies on several important theoretical contributions. First, we present a PMBM conjugate prior on the posterior of sets of trajectories for a generalized measurement model, in which each object generates an independent set of measurements. The PMBM density is a conjugate prior in the sense that both the prediction and the update steps preserve the PMBM form of the density. Second, we present a factor graph representation of the joint posterior of the PMBM set of trajectories and association variables for the Poisson spatial measurement model. Importantly, leveraging the PMBM conjugacy and the factor graph formulation enables an elegant treatment on undetected objects via a Poisson point process and efficient inference on sets of trajectories using BP, where the approximate marginal densities in the PMB approximation can be obtained without enumeration of different data association hypotheses. Precise indoor localization remains a challenging problem for a variety of essential applications. A promising approach to address this problem is to exchange radio signals between mobile agents and static physical anchors (PAs) that bounce off flat surfaces in the indoor environment. Radio frequency simultaneous localization and mapping (RF-SLAM) methods can be used to jointly estimates the time-varying location of agents as well as the static locations of the flat surfaces. Recent work on RF-SLAM methods has shown that each surface can be efficiently represented by a single master virtual anchor (MVA). The measurement model related to this MVA-based RF-SLAM method is highly nonlinear. Thus, Bayesian estimation relies on sampling-based techniques. The original MVA-based RF-SLAM method employs conventional "bootstrap" sampling. In challenging scenarios it was observed that the original method might converge to incorrect MVA positions corresponding to local maxima. In this paper, we introduce MVA-based RF-SLAM with an improved sampling technique that succeeds in the aforementioned challenging scenarios. Situation-aware technologies enabled by multiobject tracking (MOT) methods will create new services and applications in fields such as autonomous navigation and applied ocean sciences. Belief propagation (BP) is a state-of-the-art method for Bayesian MOT but fully relies on a statistical model and preprocessed sensor measurements. In this paper, we establish a hybrid method for model-based and data-driven MOT. The proposed neural enhanced belief propagation (NEBP) approach complements BP by information learned from raw sensor data with the goal to improve data association and to reject false alarm measurements. We evaluate the performance of our NEBP approach for MOT on the nuScenes autonomous driving dataset and demonstrate that it can outperform state-of-the-art reference methods.

Tracking multiple time-varying states based on heterogeneous observations is a key problem in many applications. Here, we develop a statistical model and algorithm for tracking an unknown number of targets based on the probabilistic fusion of observations from two classes of data sources. The first class, referred to as target-independent perception systems (TIPSs), consists of sensors that periodically produce noisy measurements of targets without requiring target cooperation. The second class, referred to as target-dependent reporting systems (TDRSs), relies on cooperative targets that report noisy measurements of their state and their identity. We present a joint TIPS-TDRS observation model that accounts for observation-origin uncertainty, missed detections, false alarms, and asynchronicity. We then establish a factor graph that represents this observation model along with a state evolution model including target identities. Finally, by executing the sum-product algorithm on that factor graph, we obtain a scalable multitarget tracking algorithm with inherent TIPS-TDRS fusion. Our probabilistic focalization approach estimates the time-varying source location by associating direction of arrival (DOA) observations to DOAs predicted based on a statistical model. For data collection scenarios in the Industrial Internet of Things, wireless communication provides a cost-effective and easy-to-deploy alternative to wired networks. The main focus lies on energy efficiency and reliability, as many devices are battery operated. IEEE 802.15.4 DSME enhances reliability by acknowledging each packet individually, imposing an overhead for each transmitted packet, and increasing energy consumption. In networks with little interference, it may be beneficial to aggregate the acknowledgments for multiple nodes and broadcast them in a compressed format to all nodes in the neighborhood. The IEEE 802.15.4 2012 standard describes such a group acknowledgment scheme which, however, disappears in later iterations of the standard. This paper compares different group acknowledgment schemes and proposes a novel group acknowledgment scheme with the goal to examine whether group acknowledgments constitute a viable alternative to regular acknowledgments in reliable data-collection scenarios. Our analysis suggests that apart from a few cases, GACKs do not constitute a valid alternative to the direct acknowledgement of data packets.

We propose an efficient random finite set (RFS) based algorithm for multiobject tracking in which the object states are modeled by a combination of a labeled multi-Bernoulli (LMB) RFS and a Poisson RFS. The less computationally demanding Poisson part of the algorithm is used to track potential objects whose existence is unlikely. Only if a quantity characterizing the plausibility of object existence is above a threshold, a new labeled Bernoulli component is created and the object is tracked by the more accurate but more computationally demanding LMB part of the algorithm. Conversely, a labeled Bernoulli component is transferred back to the Poisson RFS if the corresponding existence probability falls below another threshold. Contrary to existing hybrid algorithms based on multi-Bernoulli and Poisson RFSs, the proposed method facilitates track continuity and implements complexity-reducing features. Joint probabilistic data association (JPDA) and multiple hypothesis tracking (MHT) introduced in the 70s, are still widely used methods for multitarget tracking (MTT). Extensive studies over the last few decades have revealed undesirable behavior of JPDA and MHT type methods in tracking scenarios with targets in close proximity. In particular, JPDA suffers from the track coalescence effect, i.e., estimated tracks of targets in close proximity tend to merge and can become indistinguishable. Interestingly, in MHT, an opposite effect to track coalescence called track repulsion can be observed. In this paper, we review the estimation strategies of the MHT, JPDA, and the recently introduced belief propagation (BP) framework for MTT and we investigate if BP also suffers from these two detrimental effects. We propose a scalable track-before-detect (TBD) tracking method based on a Poisson/multi-Bernoulli model. To limit computational complexity, we approximate the exact multi-Bernoulli mixture posterior probability density function (pdf) by a multi-Bernoulli pdf. Data association based on the sum-product algorithm and recycling of Bernoulli components enable the detection and tracking of low-observable objects with limited computational resources. Estimating position and orientation change of a mobile platform from two consecutive point clouds provided by a high-resolution sensor is a key problem in autonomous navigation. In particular, scan matching algorithms aim to find the translation and rotation of the platform such that the two point clouds coincide. The association of measurements in point cloud one with measurements in point cloud two is a problem inherent to scan matching. Existing methods perform non-probabilistic data association, i.e., they assume a single association hypothesis. This leads to overconfident pose estimates and reduced estimation accuracy in ambiguous environments. Our probabilistic scan matching approach addresses this issue by considering all association hypotheses with their respective likelihoods. We formulate a holistic Bayesian estimation problem for both data association and pose estimation and present the corresponding joint factor graph. Near-optimum maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimates of the sensor pose are computed by performing iterative message passing on the factor graph. Location-aware networks will introduce innovative services and applications for modern convenience, applied ocean sciences, and public safety. In this paper, we establish a hybrid method for model-based and data-driven inference. We consider a cooperative localization (CL) scenario where the mobile agents in a wireless network aim to localize themselves by performing pairwise observations with other agents and by exchanging location information. A traditional method for distributed CL in large agent networks is belief propagation (BP) which is completely model-based and is known to suffer from providing inconsistent (overconfident) estimates. The proposed approach addresses these limitations by complementing BP with learned information provided by a graph neural network (GNN). We demonstrate numerically that our method can improve estimation accuracy and avoid overconfident beliefs, while its computational complexity remains comparable to BP. Notably, more consistent beliefs are obtained by not explicitly addressing overconfidence in the loss function used for training of the GNN.

Multiobject tracking provides situational awareness that enables new applications for modern convenience, public safety, and homeland security. This paper presents a factor graph formulation and a particle-based sum-product algorithm (SPA) for scalable detection and tracking of extended objects. The proposed method dynamically introduces states of newly detected objects, efficiently performs probabilistic multiple-measurement to object association, and jointly infers the geometric shapes of objects. Scalable extended object tracking (EOT) is enabled by modeling association uncertainty by measurement-oriented association variables and newly detected objects by a Poisson birth process. Contrary to conventional EOT methods, a fully particle-based approach makes it possible to describe different geometric object shapes. The proposed method can reliably detect, localize, and track a large number of closely-spaced extended objects without gating and clustering of measurements. We demonstrate significant performance advantages of our approach compared to the recently introduced Poisson multi-Bernoulli mixture filter. Seamless situational awareness provided by modern radar systems relies on effective methods for multiobject tracking (MOT). This paper presents a graph-based Bayesian method for nonlinear and high-dimensional MOT problems that embeds particle flow. To perform operations on the graph effectively, particles are migrated towards regions of high likelihood based on the solution of a partial differential equation. This makes it possible to obtain good object detection and tracking performance with a relatively small number of particles even if object states are high dimensional and sensor measurements are very informative. Contention-based wireless channel access methods like CSMA and ALOHA paved the way for the rise of the Internet of Things in industrial applications (IIoT). However, to cope with increasing demands for reliability and throughput, several mostly TDMA-based protocols like IEEE 802.15.4 and its extensions were proposed. Nonetheless, many of these IIoT-protocols still require contention-based communication, e.g., for slot allocation and broadcast transmission. In many cases, subtle but hidden patterns characterize this secondary traffic. Present contention-based protocols are unaware of these hidden patterns and can therefore not exploit this information. Especially in dense networks, they often do not provide sufficient reliability for primary traffic, e.g., they are unable to allocate transmission slots in time. In this paper, we propose QMA, a contention-based multiple access scheme based on Q-learning, which dynamically adapts transmission times to avoid collisions by learning patterns in the contention-based traffic. QMA is designed to be resource-efficient and targets small embedded devices. We show that QMA solves the hidden node problem without the additional overhead of RTS / CTS messages and verify the behaviour of QMA in the FIT IoT-LAB testbed. Finally, QMA's scalability is studied by simulation, where it is used for GTS allocation in IEEE 802.15.4 DSME. In 2015, the IEEE 802.15.4 standard was expanded by the Deterministic and Synchronous Multi-Channel Extension (DSME) to increase reliability, scalability and energy-efficiency in industrial applications. The extension offers a TDMA/FDMA-based channel access, where time is divided into two alternating phases, a contention access period (CAP) and a contention free period (CFP). During the CAP, transmission slots can be allocated offering an exclusive access to the shared medium during the CFP. The fraction $\tau$ of CFP's time slots in a dataframe is a critical value, because it directly influences agility and throughput. A high throughput demands that the CFP is much longer than the CAP, i.e., a high value of the fraction $\tau$, because application data is only sent during the CFP. High agility is given if the expected waiting time to send a CAP message is short and that the length of the CAPs are sufficiently long to accommodate necessary (de)allocations of GTSs, i.e., a low value of the fraction $\tau$. Once DSME is configured according to the needs of an application, the fraction $\tau$ can only assume one of two values and cannot be changed at run-time. In this paper, we propose two extensions of DSME that allow to adopt $\tau$ to the current traffic pattern. We show theoretically and through simulations that the proposed extensions provide a high degree of responsiveness to traffic fluctuations while keeping the throughput high., Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures

Multitarget tracking (MTT) is a challenging task that aims at estimating the number of targets and their states from measurements of the target states provided by one or multiple sensors. Additional information, such as imperfect estimates of target classes provided by a classifier, can facilitate the target-measurement association and thus improve MTT performance. Focused Ion Beam (FIB) processing has been established as a well-suited and promising technique in R&D in nearly all fields of nanotechnology for patterning and prototyping on the micro and nanometer scale and below. Among other concepts, liquid metal alloy ion sources (LMAIS) are one of the alternatives to conventional gallium beams to extend the FIB application field. To meet the rising demand for light ions, different boron containing alloys were investigated in this work. A promising solution was found in a Co31Nd64B5 based LMAIS which will be introduced in more detail. Besides cobalt as a ferromagnetic element and the rare earth element neodymium, boron in particular is of interest for special FIB applications like local p-type doping, for which resolution of about 30 nm has been achieved so far.

Location-aware networks will enable new services and applications in fields such as autonomous driving, smart cities, and the Internet-of-Things. One promising solution for ubiquitous localization is network localization and navigation (NLN), where devices form a network that cooperatively localizes itself, reducing the infrastructure needed for accurate localization. This paper introduces a real-time NLN system named Peregrine, which combines distributed NLN algorithms with commercially available ultra-wideband (UWB) sensing and communication technology. The Peregrine software application, for the first time, integrates three NLN algorithms to jointly perform the tasks of localization and network operation in a technology agnostic manner, leveraging both spatial and temporal cooperation. Peregrine hardware is composed of low-cost, compact devices that comprise a microprocessor and a commercial UWB radio. This paper presents the design of the Peregrine system and characterizes the performance impact of each algorithmic component. Indoor experiments validate that our approach to realizing NLN is both reliable and scalable, and maintains sub-meter-level accuracy even in challenging indoor scenarios., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures
