There are high rates of tobacco smoking among people who experience mental illness (MI). While videos are an effective method of disseminating health-related information, there is limited research investigating the effectiveness of video-delivered education promoting smoking cessation among people living with MI. This formative study aimed to investigate the effectiveness and acceptability of targeted video resources providing smoking cessation information and advice to smokers with MI. This study used a mixed-method design; 29 Australian smokers living with MI completed a preinterview survey including 12 questions assessing knowledge about smoking cessation, watched six videos developed by the research team providing information about smoking cessation, took part in semistructured interviews about the videos' quality, content, and format, and then completed a postinterview survey identical to the preinterview survey to assess changes in smoking cessation-related knowledge. A Wilcoxon signed rank test was used to calculate changes in cessation-related knowledge, and thematic analysis was used to identify common themes in qualitative data. We found a statistically significant increase in participants' smoking cessation-related knowledge scores after watching the videos. Participants indicated an overall high level of acceptability of the videos' quality, content, and format, and findings from the semistructured interviews reflected these favorable views. This study's findings provide a new understanding of the effectiveness and acceptability of customized video-based education to promote smoking cessation among people living with MI, and can be used to inform the content and focus of video resources aimed at increasing knowledge about smoking cessation for people experiencing MI.

Objective: Suicide is a leading cause of death in children and adolescents worldwide and a major public health concern. While suicidal behaviours place a significant demand on mental health and emergency services, data regarding suicide‐related contacts with police and paramedics are an underutilised resource. The aim of the present study was to identify the demographic profile of young individuals (aged 5–17) and had a suicide‐related contact with police or paramedics in Queensland (Australia). Methods: The present study utilised a population‐wide linked dataset, including data from police and paramedics and health administrative data, between 1 February 2013 and 31 January 2018. Results: The identified cohort of 7929 children had a median age of 15 years and mainly comprised females (63.2%). Over the study period, 64 children died, most by suicide (76.6%). Less than a third of the cohort were responsible for almost two‐thirds of the total number of contacts with police or paramedics. Conclusion: Findings provide a comprehensive profile of children and adolescents in suicidal crisis and highlight the substantial number of interactions that occur with police and paramedics. Due to the way the linked dataset was constructed, it must be assumed that the number of young persons in suicidal crisis is higher. Findings highlight the value of considering pre‐hospital alternatives to presenting to emergency departments (EDs) for this cohort, to reduce impost on EDs and improve outcomes. Obesity and metabolic syndrome are disproportionately prevalent among people with mental disorders, particularly those subject to long periods of inpatient care where sedentary lifestyle and medication side effects can be compounding problems. This study reports on a cross-sectional survey of 28 patients under forensic mental health care in a high secure inpatient service in Queensland, Australia. The study comprises a file review, structured questionnaire and an interview, to evaluate the physical health and activity, as well as possible causes of low physical activity of these patients. Rates of overweight (50.0%), obesity (46.6%), and metabolic syndrome (39.3%) were very high within the study population. Mean waist circumference measurements were also high for both females (110.8 cm) and males (109.0 cm). Around one half of the study population (46.4%) did not meet the World Health Organization's recommended levels of physical activity. Self-reported low levels of physical activity were significantly associated with the presence of comorbid medical illness (p = 0.007). Further research investigating the factors contributing to poor physical health and low activity levels within this population will support attempts to understand and address the physical health needs of this population. Objectives: The aim is to report the operation of the Australian Defence Force Centre for Mental Health (ADFCMH) Second Opinion Clinic (SOC) after its first 10 years of operation. Method: Demographic data and clinical data were recorded and analysed for all Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel (n =209) seen at the clinic from 2011 to 2021. Results: Assessment at the clinic led to a change in diagnosis from that given at the time of referral in 40.7% (n =85) of members seen. Of the total members assessed at the SOC, 55.9% (n =117) had been on an at least one operational deployment. Mood disorders were the most common mental disorders seen among personnel at the SOC. Conclusions: The ADFCMH SOC is a valuable clinical resource supporting ADF health services nationally and provides an example of an effective mental health tertiary referral service. Farmers have traditionally been perceived as having a deep attachment to land and place that contrasts with the mobility of modern society. In this paper, we use this work as a starting point for analysing new forms of attachments among a cohort of Australian farmers who are highly mobile in their business activities. In response, we devise a new way of thinking about farmer attachments that involves decoupling three elements: attachment to farming as an activity and source of agrarian identity; attachment to the farm as an economic and social unit; and attachment to place. Individual farmers recombine these different elements of attachment in different ways, depending on their specific context, promoting both mobility and stasis. We illustrate these recombinant attachments through examples of globally engaged Australian farmers who enact different configurations of attachment of place, farm business and farming identity. Objectives: Suicide is a leading cause of maternal mortality. Suicidality during and around the time of pregnancy can have detrimental impacts on a child's development and outcomes. This paper examines prevalence, demographic characteristics, and timing of initial contact with first responders and health services for a cohort of women who experienced suicidality during and around the time of pregnancy. Methods: Findings are drawn from the Partners in Prevention (PiP) study, a population-wide linked data set of suicide-related attendances by police or paramedics in Queensland, Australia. A sub-cohort of women was identified, who were between 6 months preconception and 2 years postpartum at the time of a suicide-related contact with police or paramedics (PiP-Maternal). Findings are compared to other girls and women who had a suicide-related contact with police or paramedics (PiP-Female). Prevalence, demographic characteristics, timing of contact with first responders and health services, re-presentations, and mortality are reported. Results: The PiP-Maternal cohort comprised 3020 individuals and 3400 births. Women in the PiP-Maternal cohort were younger, more likely to be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent and live outside of a major city than the PiP-Female cohort. There were high rates of out-of-hours calls to police and ambulance, and similar perceived seriousness of the call between women in the PiP-Maternal and PiP-Female cohorts. Women in the PiP-Maternal cohort were less likely to be admitted to an emergency department within 24 hours, even after matching on covariates. Prevalence of suicidality for women who were pregnant and up to 2 years postpartum was 1.32% (95% CI = [1.27, 1.37]). Conclusion: Vulnerabilities and high rates of contact with police or paramedics, coupled with lower levels of follow-up, highlight the critical need to improve service responses for women with mental health needs during these phases of life.
