Abstract

The CLARINO Bergen Centre, which provides scholars with access to digital language data and processing services, has in recent years provided substantial services to research and development in lexicography. This chapter describes the interplay between three major lexicography efforts and the centre. Easy access to large corpora in CLARINO and powerful tools for searching and analysing corpus materials help to secure an empirical foundation which far exceeds the lexicographical resources and possibilities available to lexicographers in Norway only a few years ago. publishedVersion

Abstract

To be published in the Proceedings of the 8th International Workshop on Treebanks and Linguistic Theories (TLT8), Milan. Parallel grammars and parallel treebanks can be a useful method for studying linguistic diversity and commonality. We use this approach to study how arguments to similar predicates are realized across languages. To that end, we formulate formal principles for aligning at phrase and word levels based on translational correspondences at predicate-argument level. A first version of a new tool for creating, storing, visualizing and searching treebank alignment at different levels has been constructed. Produced in the XPAR project financed in part by the Meltzer Foundation.

14. The ASK Corpus – a Language Learner Corpus of Norwegian as a Second Language

Abstract

In our paper we present the design and interface of ASK, a language learner corpus of Norwegian as a second language which contains essays collected from language tests on two different proficiency levels as well as personal data from the test takers. In addition, the corpus also contains texts and relevant personal data from native Norwegians as control data. The texts as well as the personal data are marked up in XML according to the TEI Guidelines. In order to be able to classify errors in the texts, we have introduced new attributes to the TEI corr and sic tags. For each error tag, a correct form is also in the text annotation. Finally, we employ an automatic tagger developed for standard Norwegian, the Oslo-Bergen Tagger , together with a facility for manual tag correction. As corpus query system, we are using the Corpus Workbench developed at the University of Stuttgart together with a web search interface developed at Aksis, University of Bergen. The system allows for searching for combinations of words, error types, grammatical annotation and personal data. publishedVersion

Abstract

This paper discusses the construction of a parallel treebank currently involving ten languages from six language families. The treebank is based on deep LFG (LexicalFunctional Grammar) grammars that were developed within the framework of the ParGram (Parallel Grammar) effort. The grammars produce output that is maximally parallelized across languages and language families. This output forms the basis of a parallel treebank covering a diverse set of phenomena. The treebank is publicly available via the INESS treebanking environment, which also allows for the alignment of language pairs. We thus present a unique, multilayered parallel treebank that represents more and different types of languages than are available in other treebanks, that represents deep linguistic knowledge and that allows for the alignment of sentences at several levels: dependency structures, constituency structures and POS information

Abstract

In this paper we discuss the results of the Nomen Nescio Named Entity Recognition project, a joint effort for the mainland Scandinavian languages—Norwegian, Swedish, and Danish. Fiver research groups have been involved, and developed NE recognizers using rule-based as well as statistical methods. We focus particularly on the choice of semantic categories and the problems regarding metonymy and semantic polysemy. Furthermore, we discuss the extent to which different approaches to these problems have different effects on the different types of systems, and look at two strategies, which we call Function over Form, and Form over Function.
