online conferences ,diversity ,inclusivity ,open science ,collaborative events - Abstract
As the global health crisis unfolded, many academic conferences moved online in 2020. This move has been hailed as a positive step towards inclusivity in its attenuation of economic, physical, and legal barriers and effectively enabled many individuals from groups that have traditionally been underrepresented to join and participate. A number of studies have outlined how moving online made it possible to gather a more global community and has increased opportunities for individuals with various constraints, e.g., caregiving responsibilities. Yet, the mere existence of online conferences is no guarantee that everyone can attend and participate meaningfully. In fact, many elements of an online conference are still significant barriers to truly diverse participation: the tools used can be inaccessible for some individuals; the scheduling choices can favour some geographical locations; the set-up of the conference can provide more visibility to well-established researchers and reduce opportunities for early-career researchers. While acknowledging the benefits of an online setting, especially for individuals who have traditionally been underrepresented or excluded, we recognize that fostering social justice requires inclusivity to actively be centered in every aspect of online conference design. Here, we draw from the literature and from our own experiences to identify practices that purposefully encourage a diverse community to attend, participate in, and lead online conferences. Reflecting on how to design more inclusive online events is especially important as multiple scientific organizations have announced that they will continue offering an online version of their event when in-person conferences can resume.

NANOINDENTATION tests ,GRAZING incidence ,SOLID waste ,INFRARED spectroscopy ,CONTACT angle - Abstract
Plastics make up a great portion of solid waste that constitutes an emerging threat to the natural environment. Among plastics, polyethylene is the most widely used in the world. In this research, polyethylene materials with different densities designed for packaging applications are the subject of a degradation study. The materials were exposed to simulated solar exposure and were characterized by a combination of analytical techniques to compare both chemical and physical changes, including attenuated total reflection‐Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR‐FTIR), water contact angle measurements, Raman spectroscopy, grazing incidence X‐ray Diffraction (GIXRD) and nanoindentation tests. The experimental data were systematically analyzed using statistic methods. It was found that the extent of the increase of polar groups, hydrophilicity, crystallinity, and elastic modulus depends on both the density of polyethylene and the duration of UV aging. These changes result from photooxidation and the subsequent structure reorganization occurring in amorphous chains. The implementation of various analytical techniques and statistical analysis provides a holistic understanding of polyethylene degradation behaviors. The knowledge of increased hydrophilicity/polarity in polyethylene is crucial for understanding the fate of plastics in the environment because such polyethylene changes also facilitate the environmental biodegradation on initially non‐polar polyethylene. International audience; Episodic memory, our capacity to recollect particular life episodes, has been initially defined in terms of the information it contains : what, where and in which context/when an event takes place. Pioneering studies on food-caching birds have demonstrated that animals are also able to form such complex memories. Using an original behavioral paradigm developed in our group, we confirmed that rats were indeed able to form episodic-like memory associations and retrieve them 24h later. Rats were exposed briefly to two successive episodes, during which unique odor-place-reward combinations (“what and where” information) were presented in different enriched multisensory contexts. We reported individual episodic memory profiles: some rats (“www” ) were indeed able to form and retrieve a complete memory of the episode while other animals (“Others”) remembered only parts of the information from the initial episodes. In the present study we first compare the ability of the rats to retrieve an episode either after 24h or 24 days. This behavioral study was performed on a group of 15 rats and combined to multi-site local field potentials recordings. The network of structures investigated included olfactory brain areas, lateral and medial prefrontal cortex and the dorsal and ventral part of the hippocampus. The objective was to investigate potential differences in the neural circuits involved in recent vs remote episodic retrieval. We focused our analysis on odor-induced changes in power in the theta band (3-12Hz) and compare “www” and “others” animals in the different experimental situations (encoding, recent vs remote memory). We found that the network of activated brain regions in theta frequency band differed as both a function of individual memory profiles as well as a function of memory age. As expected, the theta network is large especially during encoding. From the data obtained so far, two main results emerged: 1) during encoding we already observed differences in theta network activities according to individual memory profiles. 2) Prefrontal regions were already involved in episodic memory encoding from the very beginning and hippocampal regions stay engaged in the network supporting remote episodic recollection.

© 2021 American Neurological Association, Objective: Knowing explicitly where we are is an interpretation of our spatial representations. Reduplicative paramnesia is a disrupting syndrome in which patients present a firm belief of spatial mislocation. Here, we studied the largest sample of patients with delusional misidentifications of space (i.e. reduplicative paramnesia) after stroke to shed light on their neurobiology. Methods: In a prospective, cumulative, case-control study, we screened 400 patients with acute right-hemispheric stroke. We included 64 cases and 233 controls. First, lesions were delimited and normalized. Then, we computed structural and functional disconnection maps using methods of lesion-track and network-mapping. The maps were compared, controlling for confounders. Second, we built a multivariate logistic model including clinical, behavioural and neuroimaging data. Finally, we performed a nested cross-validation of the model with a support-vector machine analysis. Results: The most frequent misidentification subtype was confabulatory mislocation (56%), followed by place reduplication (19%) and chimeric assimilation (13%). Our results indicate that structural disconnection is the strongest predictor of the syndrome and included two distinct streams, connecting right fronto-thalamic and right occipito-temporal structures. In the multivariate model, the independent predictors of reduplicative paramnesia were the structural disconnection map, lesion sparing of right dorsal fronto-parietal regions, age and anosognosia. Good discrimination accuracy was demonstrated (area under the curve = 0.80[0.75-0.85]). Interpretation: Our results localize the anatomical circuits that may have a role in the abnormal spatial-emotional binding and in the defective updating of spatial representations underlying reduplicative paramnesia. This novel data may contribute to better understand the pathophysiology of delusional syndromes after stroke., The authors acknowledge our colleagues from the Department of Neurology and from the Language Research Laboratory for their contribution to patient screening. - Abstract

In this paper, we report the separations of large, neutral, synthetic polymers using primarily a nonaqueous mobile phase without the use of a supporting electrolyte. The size- exclusion-based mechanism for separation was achieved on sulfonated polystyrene/divinylbenzene stationary phases. The effect of water, voltage, stationary phase exchange capacity, and pore size were investigated. The stationary phase and solvent interactions were studied by attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR FT-IR) and a possible mechanism for the generation of EOF in the THF/water system is provided. Linear calibration curves were obtained for polystyrenes ranging in MW from 5K to 2M, for columns made using a combination of high capacity ion exchanger and a neutral polystyrene/divinylbenzene material of varied pore sizes. Analysis of polyurethane, polystyrene, and other polymer samples using CEC correlated well with results obtained by conventional HPLC. The size exclusion CEC separations provide an alternative mode for determining the relative molecular weights of polymers, with reduced solvent consumption.

nervous system - Abstract
A growing number of studies investigate brain anatomy in migraine using voxel- (VBM) and surface-based morphometry (SBM), as well as diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). The purpose of this article is to identify consistent patterns of anatomical alterations associated with migraine. First, 19 migraineurs without aura and 19 healthy participants were included in a brain imaging study. T1-weighted MRIs and DTI sequences were acquired and analyzed using VBM, SBM and tract-based spatial statistics. No significant alterations of gray matter (GM) volume, cortical thickness, cortical gyrification, sulcus depth and white-matter tract integrity could be observed. However, migraineurs displayed decreased white matter (WM) volume in the left superior longitudinal fasciculus. Second, a systematic review of the literature employing VBM, SBM and DTI was conducted to investigate brain anatomy in migraine. Meta-analysis was performed using Activation Likelihood Estimation (ALE) on GM volume data. Alterations of GM volume, WM volume, cortical thickness or white-matter tract integrity were reported in 72%, 50%, 56% and 33% of published studies respectively. Spatial distribution and direction of the disclosed effects were highly inconsistent across studies. The ALE analysis revealed no significant decrease of GM volume in migraine. A significant increase of GM volume in the left superior temporal and angular gyri was detected in migraine, a result however based on a small number of studies. Overall there is to this day no strong evidence of specific brain anatomical alterations reliably associated to migraine. Possible explanations of this conflicting literature are discussed.

This paper discusses whether changes in mobility practices affect value of travel time savings. It considers the relationship between the theory of the value of time and its practical application in traffic models and cost-benefit analysis. The discussion covers the need to distinguish variations in utility due to changes in the quantity and quality of time spent in travelling, the relationships between changes in value of time and mobility practices and between collective and individual values of time.
