Understanding the along-strike seismogenic behavior of megathrusts is crucial to anticipating seismic hazards in subduction zones. However, if and how spatiotemporal frictional heterogeneity (high and low kinematic coupling) at depth feeds back into the upper-plate deformation pattern and how the upper-plate elastic signals and permanent records may correlate have yet to be fully understood. Hence, we mimic subduction megathrust seismic cycles using an analog seismotectonic model of an elastoplastic wedge overlying a frictionally heterogeneous megathrust. Coseismically, the zone above the down-dip limit of the aseismic and seismogenic patches undergoes extension and contraction, respectively, while the strain state shows a switch in polarity from coseismic to interseismic. The down-dip limit of the creeping zone produces permanent along-strike extension or contraction, depending on the frictional barrier strength. Our experiments show that the frictional locking heterogeneity generates more segmented along-strike strain patterns elastically (short term) than permanently (long term). Moreover, our results suggest that along-strike upper-plate strain patterns could serve as a proxy for interpreting persistent lateral variations of seismogenic behavior in subduction megathrusts.

The ECMWF’s Integrated Forecast System (IFS) is the global atmospheric model used by the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) to provide analyses and forecasts on atmospheric composition. While the IFS configuration used operationally until June 2023 comprised a chemistry scheme and an aerosol module designed only for tropospheric composition, it has now been upgraded (cycle 48R1) to solve also for stratospheric chemistry and sulfate aerosols. We describe these two modules and their latest developments, evaluating hindcasts of stratospheric composition across eight winter-spring seasons above the polar regions and different aerosol case studies including quiescent and volcanic periods.The new stratospheric chemistry module, IFS(BASCOE), is evaluated against the BASCOE Reanalysis of Aura-MLS (BRAM) demonstrating its capacity to forecast the chemical composition of the polar lower stratosphere above both the Arctic and the Antarctic for five years with very different evolutions of the polar vortices. The current performance allows us to study the interannual variability of ozone hole episodes, including the exceptional Antarctic 2020 event.The stratospheric extension of the aerosol module has been coupled to IFS(BASCOE) through sulphuric acid, the radiation scheme, and the 4Dvar assimilation scheme. Intercomparisons with aerosol-related datasets (GloSSAC, GOMOS-AerGOM, AERONET, TROPOMI-SO2) and simulations by WACCM-CARMA show reasonable agreement for the post-Pinatubo event (1991-1995), a quiescent period (1997-1999), the early Envisat period (2002-2004) and the Raikoke eruption (June 2019). The Raikoke test shows that the chain from (volcanic) trace gas increments, impacting consecutively SO2, sulfate, radiation, and temperature, is functional and ready to be tested in data assimilation mode., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

This data set is digital image correlation data, including surface displacement and strain data from laboratory subduction megathrust earthquake cycles. The data consists of grids of surface strain (elastic and permanent), trench-normal surface displacement, vorticity and divergence maps over analog seismic cycles, and time series of surface displacement. The data have been derived using a stereo camera setup and processed with LaVision Davis 10 software. Detailed descriptions of the experiments and results regarding the surface pattern of the strain can be found in Kosari et al. (2023), to which this data set is supplementary. We use three configurations to mimic the along-strike heterogeneous spatiotemporal distribution of frictional locking (Rosenau et al., 2019; Kosari et al., 2022b). A central patch separates two stick-slip zones as an aseismic barrier in all configurations. The frictional properties of the central patch vary as a velocity-strengthening (VS configuration), a velocity-neutral (VN), and a velocity-weakening (VW configuration). The VW zone generates smaller slip events with a higher frequency (i.e., recurrence interval) than the stick-slip zones. Four frictionally different materials have been emplaced on the interface: The sticky-rice as velocity-weakening material (a-blt;0) resulting in stick-slip cycles simulating earthquake cycles, fine-grained sugar and rubber-sand mixture as velocity-strengthening (a-bgt;0) and velocity-neutral (a-b=0) material, and fine-grained salt as velocity-weakening material (a-blt;0) (Kosari et al., 2023).

Background: Diffuse-type tenosynovial giant cell tumour (D-TGCT) is a nonmalignant but locally aggressive tumour driven by overexpression of colony-stimulating factor-1 (CSF1). CSF1R inhibitors are potential therapeutic strategies for patients not amenable to surgery. We report here the long-term outcome of nilotinib in patients with advanced D-TGCT treated within a phase II prospective international study (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT01261429). Methods: Patients were enrolled between December 2010-September 2012 at 11 cancer centres. Eligible patients had histologically confirmed D-TGCT, not amenable to surgery. Patients received nilotinib until evidence of progression, toxicity or a maximum of one year. Long-term data were retrospectively collected after the completion of the phase II trial. Patients with nilotinib treatment >= 12 weeks and follow-up >= 12 months were included for long-term analysis. Results: Forty-eight of 56 enrolled patients were included. Median treatment duration was 11 months; 31 (65%) patients completed the treatment protocol. After 102 months of follow-up (median; range 12-129), 25 patients (52%) had progression. The median progression-free survival (PFS) was 77 months. The five-year PFS rate was 53%. Fifteen patients (n=15/46; 33%) experienced clinical worsening after 11 months (median). Twenty-seven patients (58%) received additional treatment, after which eleven patients (n = 11/27; 41%) had a second relapse. Nine patients required a subsequent treatment, primarily other CSF1R inhibitors (n = 6/9; 67%). No unfavourable long-term effects were observed. Conclusion: This long-term analysis of nilotinib for advanced D-TGCT showed that about half of the patients had progression and underwent additional treatment after 8.5 years follow-up. Contrarily, several patients had ongoing disease control after limited treatment duration, demonstrating the mixed effect of nilotinib.

Despite the importance of surface energy budgets (SEBs) for land-climate interactions in the Arctic, uncertainties in their prediction persist. In situ observational data of SEB components - useful for research and model validation - are collected at relatively few sites across the terrestrial Arctic, and not all available datasets are readily interoperable. Furthermore, the terrestrial Arctic consists of a diversity of vegetation types, which are generally not well represented in land surface schemes of current Earth system models. This dataset describes the environmental conditions for 64 tundra and glacier sites (>=60°N latitude) across the Arctic, for which in situ measurements of surface energy budget components were harmonized (see Oehri et al. 2022). These environmental conditions are (proxies of) potential drivers of SEB-components and could therefore be called SEB-drivers. The associated environmental conditions, include the vegetation types graminoid tundra, prostrate dwarf-shrub tundra, erect-shrub tundra, wetland complexes, barren complexes (≤ 40% horizontal plant cover), boreal peat bogs and glacier. These land surface types (apart from boreal peat bogs) correspond to the main classification units of the Circumpolar Arctic Vegetation Map (CAVM, Raynolds et al. 2019). For each site, additional climatic and biophysical variables are available, including cloud cover, snow cover duration, permafrost characteristics, climatic conditions and topographic conditions.

This dataset comprises harmonized, standardized and aggregated in-situ observations of surface energy budget components measured at 64 sites on vegetated and glaciated sites north of 60° latitude, in the time period from 1994 till 2021. The surface energy budget components include net radiation, sensible heat flux, latent heat flux, ground heat flux, net shortwave radiation, net longwave radiation, surface temperature and albedo, which were aggregated to daily mean, minimum and maximum values from hourly and half-hourly measurements. Data were retrieved from the monitoring networks FLUXNET, AmeriFlux, AON, GC-Net and PROMICE.

The literature synthesis comprised 148 publications searched on the ISI Web of Science Core Collection.

A description of all study sites and associated environmental conditions, including the vegetation types, which correspond to the classification of the Circumpolar Arctic Vegetation Map (CAVM, Raynolds et al. 2019). 3. Data generated in a literature synthesis from 358 study sites on vegetation or glacier (>=60°N latitude) covered by 148 publications. 4. Metadata, including data contributor information and measurement heights of variables associated with Oehri et al. 2022.

We have installed 19 new Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) markers in the Hindu Kush (NE-Afghanistan) and the North Pamir front (Alai valley) and measured a total of 25 new and existing markers, if possible annually between 2014 and 2020 in survey mode. The stations are positioned along three profiles crossing the NE-striking Panjsheer fault and N-striking Badakhshan fault in the Hindu Kush, and the E-striking Pamir thrust system at the Trans Alai Range. The Hindu Kush survey data are the first of their kind in Afghanistan. The Pamir profile densifies a 1 Hz-GNSS profile that was installed in the Altyndara valley in 2013-2015; the GNSS time-series are affected by the 2015 Mw7.2 Sarez, Central Pamir, earthquake and probably the 2016 Mw6.4 Sary-Tash earthquake. The data are presented in receiver independent exchange (RNX) format and complemented by logsheets, field photos and a technical report describing the surveys in more detail.

International audience; Purpose/Objective The overall survival (OS) of patients (pts) with non-resectable locally advanced non-small cell lung carcinoma (LA-NSCLC) is poor, in part due to insufficient local control (LC) using conformal irradiation techniques (RT). The personalization of the RT margins may impact the LC and the outcome. Internal Target Volume strategy (ITV) versus "Mid-position" strategy (Mid-p), was compared in a prospective non-comparative randomized monocentric phase II trial in NSCLC patients treated by definitive radiotherapy. Planning Target volumes and mean lung dose were previously reported as significantly reduced using the Mid-p strategy (DOI: 10.1259/bjr.20190692). We report here the clinical results. Material and Methods Eligible patients were randomized (2:1) to be treated with Mid-p or ITV strategies. Patients with proven LA-NSCLC, non-resected, non-metastatic treated by definitive RT could be included. The main objective was to evaluate the 1-year progression-free-survival (PFS) rate in the two arms. 36 pts were planned in the Mid-p arm, Fleming single-stage design (1-sided =0.1, 80% power, P0=30%, P1=50%). Secondary objectives were to evaluate 1-y and 2-y LC, OS and acute/middle term toxicity (NCI-CTCAE v4).Results 54 pts were randomized from 09/12 to 05/18. 3 patients finally did not receive radiotherapy and were excluded from the analysis. Median age was 65.2 y, 2/3 of the patients were male and had IIIA NSCLC stages, 31% received concomitant chemotherapy. 34 pts and 17 pts were included in the analysis in the Mid-p arm and ITV arm respectively. Median RT dose was 66 Gy in the Mid-p arm and 62 Gy in the ITV arm. Median PFS were 9.3 months and 10.3 months in the Mid-p arm and ITV arms respectively. 1-year PFS rate were 38% (1-sided CI95% = 25-) and 47% (CI95% = [27;[) in the Mid-p/ITV arm respectively. Efficacy in Mid-p arm is below that expected (starting hypothesis p0=30%, p1=50%). 2-year PFS rates were 15% (Mid-p) and 12% (ITV). 2-years LC rates were 65% (CI95% [48;81]) and 76% (CI95% [53;94]) in the Mid-p/ITV arms respectively. The analysis of the type of local failures (in field versus border of fields) is under analysis and will be available for the congress.No grade 4 or toxic deaths related to RT were reported. Grade 3 acute lung toxicity were reported in 12% and 23% in Mid-p and in ITV arms respectively. Grade 2 and Grade 3 late radiation fibrosis were reported in 29% and 15% respectively in the Mid-p arm, versus 23% and 29% using ITV strategy. Conclusion Two-year LC and PFS in LA-NSCLC seems similar in this non comparative Phase II randomized study using Mid-p or ITV strategies. Interferometric East and Up rate maps based on time-series analysis of ~5 years of Sentinel-1 radar data provide an unprecedented spatial (~400 m) resolution of the recend surface deformation of the Tajik fold-and-thrust-belt and the greater Pamir area. Among other the data exhibit E-W shortening in the fold-thrust-belt, slip activity of the Babadag thrust fault and the Ilyak strike-slip fault, westward Pamir escape tectonics, halokinesis and near-surface, water-driven effects. Observations and methodology are discussed at length in Metzger et al., 2021 (under Review). The zip-folder contains 1) the framewise rates and uncertainties and corresponding line-of-sight (LOS) information, all labelled by frame numbers, 2) the interpolated north rates based on Eurasian-fixed GNSS and 3) the concatenated and decomposed east and up rates in a Eurasian-fixed reference frame. A GMT script (Wessel & Smith, 2013, v6.0.0) and corresponding Figures serve as an example on how to plot the data.

We have installed 20 new Global Positioning System (GPS) markers in the West Pamir and the Tajik Depression and measured 25 markers once a year between 2013 and 2016 in survey mode. The stations are positioned along two dense NW-SE oriented profiles with an average spacing of 5-10 km. The profiles cross the Darvaz and the Vakhsh/Ilyak fault and thus monitor the recent slip of these two profiles, which are expected to accommodate the gravity-driven westward extrusion of the West Pamir into the Tajik Depression. Some of the stations include millimeter to centimeter offsets potentially caused by the 2015 Mw7.2 Sarez, Pamir, earthquake.
