This research study investigates the behaviors, knowledge, and skills necessary for academic library outreach work. Through a review of published literature, job advertisements, and a survey of library practitioners conducted in the fall of 2020, the authors define and prioritize 18 competencies for outreach. Hiring managers, LIS instructors, and practitioners can use the results of this study to structure and lay out the essential areas of outreach work in academic libraries.

Navigation assistance has become part of our daily lives and its implementation in medicine has been going on for the last 3 decades. Navigation is defined as the determination of a position in space in the context of its surroundings. While routing applications used in cars highlight the street to follow, in medical applications the real-world perception of the user is enriched by digital elements that provide guidance and help the user navigate. Unlike Virtual Reality (VR) solutions, which are mainly used for training, Augmented Reality systems (AR) do not require the user to wear specific headsets/goggles, but the virtual elements are overlaid over the real image displayed on a monitor. Depending on the application and the indication, there are large differences in how much these solutions have entered clinical routine. Especially in the fields of GI endoscopy and laparoscopy, AR navigation solutions are less prominently employed in clinical practice today and still hold significant potential to elevate patient care by improved physician support. This review touches upon why AR navigation systems are currently just starting to become implemented in the GI/laparoscopic clinical routine and which applications can be expected in the GI endoscopy and laparoscopy field. By taking the practitioner's perspective and following the intuitive navigation workflow, it gives an overview of major available and potential future AR-applications in the GI endoscopy and laparoscopy space, the respective underlying technologies, their maturity level and their potential to change clinical practice. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common cancers and a major cause of mortality. Mice with truncating Apc germline mutations have been used as a standard model of CRC, but most of the Apc -mutated lines develop multiple tumors in the proximal small intestine and rarely in the colon precluding detailed analysis of colon tumor microenvironment. Our aim was to develop a model with higher resemblance to human CRC and to characterize tumor infiltrating immune cells in spontaneously developing colon tumors compared to small intestinal tumors. Therefore, the Apc 1638N/+ line was treated repeatedly with azoxymethane (AOM) and 90% colon tumor incidence and 4 to 5 colon tumors per mouse were achieved. Of note, AOM treatment specifically increased the tumor burden in the colon, but not in the small intestine. Histological grading and WNT-signaling activity did not differ significantly between small intestinal and colon tumors with some lesions progressing to invasive adenocarcinoma in both locations. However, characterization of the intratumoral myeloid cell compartment revealed a massive infiltration of colon tumors with neutrophils − 6-fold higher than in small intestinal tumors. Moreover, CCL17-expressing macrophages and dendritic cells accumulated in the tumors indicating the establishment of a tumor-promoting immunosuppressive environment. Thus, Apc 1638N/+ mice treated with AOM are a suitable and straightforward model to study the influence of immune cells and chemokines on colon carcinogenesis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article focuses on the identity of the crypto-Jews in the U.S. The Jews have been known of hiding their real identity to save themselves from persecution. Some of them have been forced to convert themselves into Catholicism during the Spanish and Portuguese inquisitions in the 15th and 16th centuries. The Hispanic people living in California, Colorado and Arizona were known to be the descendants of the crypto-Jews. To be able to learn more of their identity, the crypto-Jews have created support groups in order to learn the history and customs of the Jews.
