In most superconductors electrons form Cooper pairs in a spin-singlet state mediated by either phonons or by long-range interactions such as spin fluctuations. The superconductor UTe$_2$ is a rare material wherein electrons are believed to form pairs in a unique spin-triplet state with potential topological properties. While spin-triplet pairing may be mediated by ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic fluctuations, experimentally, the magnetic properties of UTe$_2$ are unclear. By way of muon spin rotation/relaxation ($\mu$SR) measurements on independently grown UTe$_2$ single crystals we demonstrate the existence of magnetic clusters that gradually freeze into a disordered spin frozen state at low temperatures. Our findings suggest that inhomogeneous freezing of magnetic clusters is linked to the ubiquitous residual linear term in the temperature dependence of the specific heat ($C$) and the low-temperature upturn in $C/T$ versus $T$. CeAlGe, a proposed type-II Weyl semimetal, orders antiferromagnetically below 5 K. At 2 K, spin-flop and a spin-flip transitions to less than 1 $\mu_B$/Ce are observed in the $M(H)$ data below 30 kOe, ($\bf{H}\|\bf{a}$ and $\bf{b}$, and 4.3 kOe, $\bf{H}\|\langle110\rangle$, respectively, indicating a four-fold symmetry of the $M(H)$ data along the principal directions in the tetragonal $\it{ab}$ plane with $\langle110\rangle$ set of easy directions. However, anomalously robust and complex twofold symmetry is observed in the angular dependence of resistivity and magnetic torque data in the magnetically ordered state once the field is swept in the $\it{ab}$ plane. This twofold symmetry is independent of temperature and field hystereses and suggests a magnetic phase transition that separates two different magnetic structures in the $\it{ab}$ plane. The boundary of this magnetic phase transition and possibly the type of low-field magnetic structure can be tuned by an Al deficiency.

Quantum-mechanical fluctuations between competing phases at $T=0$ induce exotic finite-temperature collective excitations that are not described by the standard Landau Fermi liquid framework. These excitations exhibit anomalous temperature dependences, or non-Fermi liquid behavior, in the transport and thermodynamic properties in the vicinity of a quantum critical point, and are often intimately linked to the appearance of unconventional Cooper pairing as observed in strongly correlated systems including the high-$T_c$ cuprate and iron pnictide superconductors. The presence of superconductivity, however, precludes direct access to the quantum critical point, and makes it difficult to assess the role of quantum-critical fluctuations in shaping anomalous finite-temperature physical properties. Here we report temperature-field scale invariance of non-Fermi liquid thermodynamic, transport, and Hall quantities in a non-superconducting iron-pnictide, Ba(Fe$_{1/3}$Co$_{1/3}$Ni$_{1/3}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$, indicative of quantum criticality at zero temperature and zero applied magnetic field. Beyond a linear in temperature resistivity, the hallmark signature of strong quasiparticle scattering, we find the scattering rate that obeys a universal scaling relation between temperature and applied magnetic fields down to the lowest energy scales. Together with the dominance of hole-like carriers close to the zero-temperature and zero-field limits, the scale invariance, isotropic field response, and lack of applied pressure sensitivity suggests a unique quantum critical system that does not drive a pairing instability., Comment: 37 pages, 15 figures

The thermal conductivity $\kappa$ of the Kondo insulator SmB$_6$ was measured at low temperature, down to 70 mK, in magnetic fields up to 15 T, on single crystals grown using both the floating-zone and the flux methods. The residual linear term $\kappa_0/T$ at $T \to 0$ is found to be zero in all samples, for all magnetic fields, in agreement with previous studies. There is therefore no clear evidence of fermionic heat carriers. In contrast to some prior data, we observe a large enhancement of $\kappa(T)$ with increasing field. The effect of field is anisotropic, depending on the relative orientation of field and heat current (parallel or perpendicular), and with respect to the cubic crystal structure. Sub-micro structured surfaces allow modifying the behavior of polymer films or components. Especially in micro fluidics a lotus-like characteristic is requested for many applications. Structure details with a high aspect ratio are necessary to decouple the bottom and the top of the functional layer. Unlike to stochastic methods, patterning with a LIGA-mold insert it is possible to structure surfaces very uniformly or even with controlled variations (e.g. with gradients).
