We have conducted an experimental study on the photo double ionization (PDI) of carbon dioxide dimers and oxygen dimers, while focusing on the dissociation dynamics upon single photon absorption. The results in terms of the kinetic energy and angular distributions of the charged particles show unambiguous experimental evidence of intermolecular Coulombic decay (ICD) in carbon dioxide dimers. In the oxygen dimer, the results show that ICD is accompanied by knock-off ionization mechanisms.

We have conducted an experimental study on the photo double ionization (PDI) of carbon-dioxide dimers at photon energies of 37 and 55 eV and oxygen dimers at photon energies of 38, 41.5, and 46 eV, while focusing on the dissociation dynamics upon single-photon absorption. The investigation was performed by applying the cold-target recoil-ion momentum spectroscopy method in order to collect and record the three-dimensional momenta of the ionic fragments and emitted electrons from the dissociating dimer in coincidence. The kinetic-energy release upon fragmentation and the electron angular distributions in the laboratory and body-fixed frames, as well as the relative electron-electron emission angle, show unambiguous experimental evidence of intermolecular Coulombic decay (ICD) in carbon-dioxide dimers upon photoionization below and above the double-ionization threshold of CO2 monomers. The PDI of oxygen dimers is less conclusive and shows contributions from ICD and knock-off ionization mechanisms. As for atomic dimers, the present results reveal that ICD in CO2 dimers after valence PDI can also serve as a source for low-energy electrons, known to be very relevant in biological systems, cells, and tissues.

The toolbox for imaging molecules is well-equipped today. Some techniques visualize the geometrical structure, others the electron density or electron orbitals. Molecules are many-body systems for which the correlation between the constituents is decisive and the spatial and the momentum distribution of one electron depends on those of the other electrons and the nuclei. Such correlations have escaped direct observation by imaging techniques so far. Here, we implement an imaging scheme which visualizes correlations between electrons by coincident detection of the reaction fragments after high energy photofragmentation. With this technique, we examine the H2 two-electron wave function in which electron-electron correlation beyond the mean-field level is prominent. We visualize the dependence of the wave function on the internuclear distance. High energy photoelectrons are shown to be a powerful tool for molecular imaging. Our study paves the way for future time resolved correlation imaging at FELs and laser based X-ray sources.

We investigate the photodouble ionization of H_{2} molecules with 400 eV photons. We find that the emitted electrons do not show any sign of two-center interference fringes in their angular emission distributions if considered separately. In contrast, the quasiparticle consisting of both electrons (i.e., the "dielectron") does. The work highlights the fact that nonlocal effects are embedded everywhere in nature where many-particle processes are involved.

We investigate the dissociation of H_{2}^{+} into a proton and a H^{0} after single ionization with photons of an energy close to the threshold. We find that the p^{+} and the H^{0} do not emerge symmetrically in the case of the H_{2}^{+} dissociating along the 1sσ_{g} ground state. Instead, a preference for the ejection of the p^{+} in the direction of the escaping photoelectron can be observed. This symmetry breaking is strongest for very small electron energies. Our experiment is consistent with a recent prediction by Serov and Kheifets [Phys. Rev. A 89, 031402 (2014)]. In their model, which treats the photoelectron classically, the symmetry breaking is induced by the retroaction of the long-range Coulomb potential onto the dissociating H_{2}^{+}.

Introduction Research indicates that low fruit and vegetable intake is a risk factor for many chronic diseases. Despite large-scale education campaigns, the great majority of Americans do not consume recommended levels. We tested the ability of a single brief interactive experience of the Little by Little CD-ROM to increase fruit and vegetable intake in lowincome women. Methods A randomized placebo-controlled, parallel-group trial included 481 low-income, female participants: mean age 50.1 years, 48.4% African American, 51.6% non- Hispanic white, and 92.5% below 185% of the federally designated poverty level. Participants received one of three conditions: 1) a one-time experience with the Little by Little CD-ROM, 2) the Little by Little CD-ROM plus two reminder telephone calls, or 3) a stress management CD-ROM (control condition). We assessed baseline and follow-up dietary intake with a modified 24-hour recall. Results Two months after the one-time experience with the CDROMs, both intervention groups reported significantly higher intakes of fruits and vegetables than the control group. The Little by Little group with reminder calls increased daily intake by 1.32 fruits/vegetables, an 86% greater increase than the control group (P = .016). The Little by Little group without reminder calls increased daily intake by 1.20 fruits/vegetables, a 69% greater increase than the control group (P = .052). Significantly greater movement in Stage of Readiness for Change also occurred in the Little by Little groups compared with the control group. Conclusion The Little by Little CD-ROM may be useful in public health and clinical situations to increase fruit and vegetable intake.

Accessing heart transplantation (HTx) for patients with advanced heart failure (HF) can be difficult, especially in areas without local transplant centers. To address this issue, the University Hospital of Reims (UHR) has established a regional pathway within its HF unit since 2018. To evaluate the effects of creating a dedicated HF unit on regional accessibility to HTx. This study utilized data from the Annual Medical and Scientific Report (RAMS) by the French Biomedicine Agency (ABM), covering the years 2014–2022. Three indicators of HTx activity in the former Champagne-Ardenne region were collected: the HTx listing rate per million inhabitants, the HTx transplantation rate per million inhabitants, and the cumulative 12-month HTx transplantation rate. Each indicator was transformed into a national index (the regional/national ratio) to adjust for annual variations. The trends from 2014 to 2022 were examined using regression analysis, and non-parametric tests assessed HTx activity before and after the establishment of the HF unit in 2018. Between 2014 and 2022, the median HTx-listing indicator was 1.04 (interquartile range (IQR): 0.95 to 1.22), showing a tendency to increase (P = 0.12) (Fig. 1). Notably, from 2019 to 2022, the median HTx-listing indicator significantly increased to 1.51 (IQR: 1.18 to 1.83), in contrast to 0.95 (IQR: 0.83 to 0.96) during 2014–2018 (P -value = 0.03) (Fig. 2A). The overall median HTx rate indicator was 1.29 (IQR: 1.15 to 1.60), with regression analysis indicating a non-significant upward trend (P -value = 0.0624) throughout the period (Fig. 1). In the 2019–2022 timeframe, the median HTx indicator notably rose to 1.61 (IQR: 1.57 to 1.63), compared to 0.95 (IQR: 0.58 to 1.15) during 2014–2018 (P -value = 0.02) (Fig. 2B). The overall median 12-month cumulative HTx indicator stood at 1.07 (IQR: 0.97 to 1.13), with regression analysis showing a statistically significant upward trend (P -value = 0.0095) over the full period (Fig. 1). Specifically, in the 2019–2022 period, the median 12-month cumulative HTx indicator significantly climbed to 1.14 (IQR: 1.11 to 1.17), as opposed to 0.97 (IQR: 0.96 to 1.00) during 2014–2018 (P -value = 0.032) (Fig. 2C). The establishment of a dedicated Heart Failure (HF) unit within a non-Heart Transplant (HTx) facility has potentially increased the regional HTx accessibility, underscoring the importance of HF units in improving HTx access.
