Abstract

The current paper investigates the effects of geometric design parameters on the fatigue failure of the drive axle housing using the Finite Element Method (FEM). The study examines the effects of various factors on the fatigue life of the drive axle housing, such as axle housing wall thickness, housing cross-sectional rounding radius, and rounding radius of the central part of the housing. Based on the known material properties and dynamic loads, a CAD/FEM model of the drive axle housing was developed, and a structural analysis was carried out. Based on the results of the structural analysis, critical places on the housing were determined, and fatigue analysis and lifetime prediction were performed. Through a series of simulations, the study reveals that increasing housing wall thickness can significantly improve fatigue performance. Similarly, increasing the rounding radius at the housing cross-section, as well as the rounding radius at the central part of the housing can also lead to improved fatigue performance. However, the effect of increasing the value of these two radii is not as significant as the effect of the wall thickness. These findings give useful information regarding the design and manufacture of drive axle housings for vehicles, intending to reduce the likelihood of fatigue failure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Rotating wheel dehumidification is a relatively new air cooling technique used in air conditioning, insufficiently researched and applied in practice. The system's effectiveness depends significantly on the desiccant wheel's properties and the moist air operating parameters. Modern software and simulations with defined inputs, can predict process air conditions required for air conditioning as long as each component characteristics of the system are known. In this work, an existing component in TRNSYS was used to simulate the desiccant wheel operation, which for stationary operating conditions and predefined efficiency aligns well with experiments. However, for a time-varying process, significant deviations of the results are observed, i.e. when the entered wheel efficiency does not correspond to every condition of the air entering the wheel. Considering that TRNSYS requires the definition of the desiccant wheel's efficiency before simulation start, treating them as fixed parameters, with the existing model component located in its database, it is impossible to carry out the simulation for time-varying conditions with satisfactory accuracy. A modified desiccant wheel model was developed and integrated into TRNSYS, which allows changing the functions of potential F1 and F2 and efficiencies eF1 and eF2 during simulations, for time-varying parameters of the humid air inlet state. Abstract

Although the countries of the Western Balkans are mostly electrified, there are still regions which do not have access to the electricity network or where the network capacity is insufficient. For the most part such areas are under special care of the state (i. e. underdeveloped, devastated by war, depopulated), on islands or in mountainous regions. Since the decentralized energy generation covers a broad range of technologies, including many renewable energy technologies that provide small-scale power at sites close to the users, such concept could be of interest for these locations. This paper identifies the areas in Western Balkans where such systems could be applied. Consideration is given to geographical locations as well as possible applications. Wind, hydro, solar photovoltaic, and biomass conversion systems were taken into consideration. Since the renewable energy sources data for Western Balkans region are rather scarce, the intention was to give a survey of the present situation and an estimate of future potential for decentralized energy generation based on renewable energy sources. The decentralized energy generation based on renewable energy sources in Western Balkans will find its niche easier for the users that will produce electricity for their own needs and for the users located in remote rural areas (off-grid applications).
