Recent studies indicate that monitoring only fine particulate matter (PM2.5) may not be enough to understand and tackle the health risk caused by particulate pollution. Health effects per unit PM2.5 seem to increase in countries with low PM2.5, but also near local pollution sources (e.g., traffic) within cities. The aim of this study is to understand the differences in the characteristics of lung-depositing particles in different geographical regions and urban environments. Particle lung deposited surface area (LDSAal) concentrations and size distributions, along with PM2.5, were compared with ambient measurement data from Finland, Germany, Czechia, Chile, and India, covering traffic sites, residential areas, airports, shipping, and industrial sites. In Finland (low PM2.5), LDSAal size distributions depended significantly on the urban environment and were mainly attributable to ultrafine particles (<100 nm). In Central Europe (moderate PM2.5), LDSAal was also dependent on the urban environment, but furthermore heavily influenced by the regional aerosol. In Chile and India (high PM2.5), LDSAal was mostly contributed by the regional aerosol despite that the measurements were done at busy traffic sites. The results indicate that the characteristics of lung-depositing particles vary significantly both within cities and between geographical regions. In addition, ratio between LDSAal and PM2.5 depended notably on the environment and the country, suggesting that LDSAal exposure per unit PM2.5 may be multiple times higher in areas having low PM2.5 compared to areas with continuously high PM2.5. These findings may partly explain why PM2.5 seems more toxic near local pollution sources and in areas with low PM2.5. Bioaerosols are microorganisms or functional parts of them or other biological matter suspended in air. Examples are bacteria, viruses, pollen, spores, or smaller plant debris. In the atmosphere, bioaerosols can play various functional roles, such as facilitating the spread of genetic material. Moreover, they can play an important role in climate by serving as ice nucleating particles and thus participating in cloud formation. Bioaerosols might play a significant role in a changing Arctic, where aerosol concentrations can be very low, and where natural as well as anthropogenic aerosol sources are subject to drastic changes due to climate change. In the Arctic, aerosols and clouds are prominent actors in climate by mediating short- and long-wave radiation interactions, which are further complicated by the presence of high-albedo surfaces such as sea ice. Thus, constraining the sources of aerosols and their interaction with clouds is key to understanding the Arctic climate and the changes it has been and will undergo. In this work, we used a single-particle instrument to differentiate bioaerosols from other particles on the basis of their fluorescence and light-scattering signal. In the Baltic Sea, we found that bioaerosols are at least 1 in every 104 coarse particles emitted by sea spray. To meet the increasing demand of sustainably produced electricity, the total number of installed wind turbines is rapidly increasing globally. Although onshore installations are dominating, offshore wind power is taking a greater share of the market every year. Offshore, the wind is generally stronger than onshore and with the possibility to construct bigger turbines the electricity yield is also greater per turbine. Furthermore, it is possible to build larger wind farms offshore than onshore. The Baltic Sea is an area of high interest to many stakeholders and a major expansion of offshore wind power is expected in the region in the coming decades. As the Baltic Sea is a semi-enclosed sea with relatively short distances to the coast from anywhere in the basin, there are many mesoscale meteorological phenomena occurring, affecting the shape of the wind profile and the preconditions for wind power. This thesis focuses on these wind profiles, utilizing multi-year lidar observations and state-of-the-art numerical models. Wind profiles with a local maximum, i.e., low-level jets, are of special interest as they are frequently occurring over the Baltic Sea. These non-ideal wind speed profiles are characterized in terms of frequency and effects on turbulent properties, and the best way to define the low-level jets is investigated. Furthermore, the change in wind direction with height is addressed and a new index to automatically identify sea and land breeze circulations in operational weather prediction models is created. Finally, different post-processing methods to improve short-term forecasts of wind power production are compared and a recommendation on how to combine the methods depending on the weather situation is presented. Altogether, the research in this thesis adds a piece to the puzzle in reaching further understanding of the Baltic Sea wind conditions. The findings will be useful also in other coastal areas in siting, farm layout, and load analysis as well as in

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to assess the importance of non-Newtonian rheological models on blood flow in the human thoracic aorta. Methods: The pulsatile flow in the aorta is simulated using the models of Casson, Quemada and Walburn-Schneck in addition to a case of fixed (Newtonian) viscosity. The impact of the four rheological models (using constant hematocrit) was assessed with respect to (i) magnitude and deviation of the viscosity relative to a reference value (the Newtonian case); (ii) wall shear stress (WSS) and its time derivative; (iii) common WSS-related indicators, OSI, TAWSS and RRT; (iv) relative volume and surface-based retrograde flow; and (v) the impact of rheological models on the transport of small particles in the thoracic aorta. Results: The time-dependent flow in the thoracic aorta implies relatively large variations in the instantaneous WSS, due to variations in the instantaneous viscosity by as much as an order of magnitude. The largest effect was observed for low shear rates (tens s-1). The different viscosity models had a small impact in terms of time- and spaced-averaged quantities. The significance of the rheological models was clearly demonstrated in the instantaneous WSS, for the space-averaged WSS (about 10%) and the corresponding temporal derivative of WSS (up to 20%). The longer-term accumulated effect of the rheological model was observed for the transport of spherical particles of 2 mm and 2 mm in diameter (density of 1200 kg/m3). Large particles total residence time in the brachiocephalic artery was 60% longer compared to the smaller particles. For the left common carotid artery, the opposite was observed: the smaller particles resided considerably longer than their larger counterparts. Conclusions: The dependence on the non-Newtonian properties of blood is mostly important at low shear regions (near walls, stagnation regions). Recent research has established a statistical link between North American cold spells (CS) and concurrent wet or windy extremes in Europe. Here, we investigate whether such a link can be related to changes in the characteristics of North Atlantic extratropical cyclones (hereafter cyclones). Despite large regions of anomalous baroclinicity during periods of North American CS, the number of cyclones across the North Atlantic as a whole is not significantly above climatology. However, we observe rates of explosive cyclogenesis significantly above climatology. We further find that CS over different North American regions are associated with large-scale atmospheric configurations displaying a strenghtened jet stream in the vicinity of the CS and different upper-level wind anomalies in the East Atlantic. These, in turn, modulate the regional distributions and characteristics of cyclones in the North Atlantic and Europe. We compute a fixed-radius cyclone footprint which we use to associate extreme precipitation and wind occurrences to individual cyclones. For eastern Canada CS, the North Atlantic jet extends over Northern Europe, resulting in a heightened numbers of cyclones for the British Isles and Scandinavia, while France, the British Isles, Northern Europe and Scandinavia all experience more intense cyclones. The British Isles consistently experience wind extremes associated with cyclones during east Canada CS. For central Canada CS, the jet is displaced poleward and only partly extends over Europe, resulting in an above average cyclone density in the eastern Atlantic and a higher number of cyclones affecting Iberia only. Neutron reflectometry has been used to study the radical initiated oxidation of a monolayer of the lipid 1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DSPC) at the air–solution interface by aqueous-phase hydroxyl, sulfate, and nitrate radicals. The oxidation of organic films at the surface of atmospheric aqueous aerosols can influence the optical properties of the aerosol and consequently can impact Earth’s radiative balance and contribute to modern climate change. The amount of material at the air–solution interface was found to decrease on exposure to aqueous-phase radicals which was consistent with a multistep degradation mechanism, i.e., the products of reaction of the DSPC film with aqueous radicals were also surface active. The multistep degradation mechanism suggests that lipid molecules in the thin film degrade to form progressively shorter chain surface active products and several reactive steps are required to remove the film from the air–solution interface. Bimolecular rate constants for oxidation via the aqueous phase OH radical cluster around 1010 dm3 mol–1 s–1. Calculations to determine the film lifetime indicate that it will take ∼4–5 days for the film to degrade to 50% of its initial amount in the atmosphere, and therefore attack by aqueous radicals on organic films could be atmospherically important relative to typical atmospheric aerosol lifetimes.

Weather regimes are recurrent and quasi-stationary large-scale atmospheric circulation patterns, typically linking to surface weather. Two commonly used sets of weather regimes are wintertime North American and Euro-Atlantic regimes. Notwithstanding recent evidence pointing to a connection between winter weather in North America and Europe, there is little knowledge on the possible relation between North American and Euro-Atlantic regimes. Here, we find that specific pairs of North American and Euro-Atlantic regimes show a close visual and statistical correspondence. Moreover, the joint analysis of the two sets of regimes can provide medium-range statistical predictability for anomalies in their occurrence frequencies. Conditioning on North American weather regimes also results in anomalies in both the large-scale circulation during specific Euro-Atlantic regimes, and the associated European surface weather. We conclude that there is a benefit in conducting joint analyses of North American and European weather regimes, as opposed to considering the two in isolation.

Simulating the carbon-water fluxes at more widely distributed meteorological stations based on the sparsely and unevenly distributed eddy covariance flux stations is needed to accurately understand the carbon-water cycle of terrestrial ecosystems. We established a new framework consisting of machine learning, determination coefficient (R2), Euclidean distance, and remote sensing (RS), to simulate the daily net ecosystem carbon dioxide exchange (NEE) and water flux (WF) of the Eurasian meteorological stations using a random forest model or/and RS. The daily NEE and WF datasets with RS-based information (NEE-RS and WF-RS) for 3774 and 4427 meteorological stations during 2002-2020 were produced, respectively. And the daily NEE and WF datasets without RS-based information (NEE-WRS and WF-WRS) for 4667 and 6763 meteorological stations during 1983-2018 were generated, respectively. For each meteorological station, the carbon-water fluxes meet accuracy requirements and have quasi-observational properties. These four carbon-water flux datasets have great potential to improve the assessments of the ecosystem carbon-water dynamics.

Data från tätortsmätningar avseende luftkvalitet från 1960 till början av 1980-talet, som arkiverats vid IVL Svenska Miljöinstitutet, har på uppdrag av Naturvårdsverket inventerats och delvis digitaliserats. Arbetet har hittills gjorts i tre etapper, och i rapporten redovisas vad som hittills gjorts samt exempel på hur data kan utnyttjas för olika typer av utvärderingar, till exempel exponeringssituationer och trendanalyser. Digitaliseringen har hittills främst inriktats mot sot och svaveldioxid. Även halter av tungmetaller och svavel på partiklar har digitaliserats men i mindre utsträckning. Utvärderingen har hittills visat att mätningar förekommit på cirka 80 orter och oftast med många mätstationer i varje ort. Mätningarnas tidsmässiga omfattning har varierat från några månader till många år. Halterna var under 1960- och första hälften av 1970-talet avsevärt högre än idag, inte minst för svaveldioxid. Extrema situationer med dygnsmedelvärden på över 400 µg/m3 svaveldioxid uppmättes i bl.a. Göteborg och i flera industriorter med ogynnsamma spridningsförhållanden. Fortsatt arbete med digitalisering kommer bland annat innefatta kvävedioxid.

This PhD thesis investigates the atmospheric life cycle of Black Carbon (BC) in the Arctic. The Arctic region has been rapidly changing in the last decades and the role of BC aerosols in this is still uncertain. BC aerosols are mainly produced by incomplete combustion of biomass burning and fossil fuel and stand out from other aerosol species due to their strong ability to absorb solar radiation. The impact of BC on the Earth’s radiation budget is estimated to be overall warming. While the indirect effect, interactions with clouds, is estimated to be negative, the direct radiation effect is positive because of the absorption ability of the BC. These estimates are uncertain, especially for aerosol-cloud interactions. To estimate the role of BC in the Arctic, it is necessary to know the size distribution of BC, the transport pattern and the loss processes that affect the BC concentration. In this thesis, in-situ observations from the Zeppelin observatory in the Arctic, as well as global modelling tools, are used to answer the following research questions: 1. What kind of new insights about BC size distributions can be gained from simultaneous long-term measurements of absorption and aerosol number size distributions? 2. How do source regions impact BC size distributions measured at Zeppelin? 3. How are observations of biomass burning tracers at Zeppelin connected to transport from source regions with active fires? 4. How do emissions, as well as, wet and dry removal pathways drive the diversity of the BC life cycle in General Circulation Models (GCMs)? A statistical method to derive BC size distributions from filter-based absorption measurements was developed and applied to long-term data from the Arctic measurement station Zeppelin on Svalbard. Dimethyl sulfide (DMS), a gas produced by phytoplankton, is the largest source of atmospheric sulfur over marine areas. DMS undergoes oxidation in the atmosphere to form a range of oxidation products, out of which sulfuric acid (SA) is well known for participating in the formation and growth of atmospheric aerosol particles, and the same is also presumed for methanesulfonic acid (MSA). Recently, a new oxidation product of DMS, hydroperoxymethyl thioformate (HPMTF), was discovered and later also measured in the atmosphere. Little is still known about the fate of this compound and its potential to partition into the particle phase. In this study, we present a full year (2020) of concurrent gas- and particle-phase observations of HPMTF, MSA, SA and other DMS oxidation products at the Zeppelin Observatory (Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard) located in the Arctic. This is the first time HPMTF has been measured in Svalbard and attempted to be observed in atmospheric particles. The results show that gas-phase HPMTF concentrations largely follow the same pattern as MSA during the sunlit months (April–September), indicating production of HPMTF around Svalbard. However, HPMTF was not observed in significant amounts in the particle phase, despite high gas-phase levels. Particulate MSA and SA were observed during the sunlit months, although the highest median levels of particulate SA were measured in February, coinciding with the highest gaseous SA levels with assumed anthropogenic origin. We further show that gas- and particle-phase MSA and SA are coupled in May–July, whereas HPMTF lies outside of this correlation due to the low particulate concentrations. These results provide more information about the relationship between HPMTF and other DMS oxidation products, in a part of the world where these have not been explored yet, and about HPMTF's ability to contribute to particle growth and cloud formation.

The Arctic is a place particularly vulnerable to climate change, warming at an accelerated rate compared to the rest of the Earth. In this remote environment, the atmosphere, the ocean, the ice, and the land are all interlinked and are shaping a very complex system. This is why the interplay between aerosols and clouds and their role in the warming Arctic is still not fully understood. To address this issue, a better understanding of the sources, properties, and fate of aerosol particles in the Arctic is needed. By means of in situ observations of aerosols and clouds at the Zeppelin Observatory on Svalbard, this thesis aims to shed light on aerosol-cloud interactions in the Arctic. These measurements were conducted within the framework of the one-year long Ny-Ålesund Aerosol Cloud Experiment (2019-2020). A special focus of this thesis is on the chemical composition of aerosol particles from a molecular-level perspective, where measurements from a filter inlet for gases and aerosols coupled to a chemical ionization mass spectrometer were used. To identify the properties of the aerosol particles serving as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) or ice nucleating particles (INP), cloud droplets and ice crystals were sampled with a ground-based counterflow virtual impactor inlet. The measured particles are called cloud residuals. The observations show that the cloud residuals have sizes in the Aitken and accumulation mode (as small as 10 nm in diameter). The chemical composition of these cloud residuals followed largely the expected annual cycle of aerosol particles in the Arctic, suggesting that most of the aerosol particles can act as CCN or INP in the Arctic. Anthropogenic signatures were present in the cloud residuals in the winter and spring, whereas in the summer a large contribution from methanesulfonic acid (MSA) was present, indicating natural source regions. Sea spray aerosol (SSA) is one of the major natural aerosol sources and is produced when wave breaking entrains air into ocean surface water, which subsequently breaks up into bubbles. These bubbles rise to the surface and can scavenge biogenic material. Once they reach the surface, they burst and produce both a large number of relatively small film drops that result from the disintegration of the bubble film cap and a smaller number of jet drops that result from the collapse of the bubble cavity and are typically larger in size than the film drops. The production of SSA is influenced by several factors, including wind speed, sea state, seawater temperature, salinity, and the physicochemical and biological condition of the ocean. SSA can significantly impact Earth's radiation budget by scattering incoming solar radiation directly and by acting as cloud condensation nuclei. To improve our understanding of the impact of sea spray aerosols on the Earth’s climate, it is critical to understand the physical mechanisms which determine the size-resolved SSA production flux. Furthermore, SSA can be a vector for the emission of primary biological airborne particles (PBAP) from the oceans to the atmosphere. PBAP encompass bacteria, viruses, pollen and spores and can be present in the atmosphere in form of agglomerates, single particles or cell fractions. Although, the abundance of PBAP typically only make up < 0.1% of the number of aerosols, this does not imply their insignificance. On the contrary, PBAP are known to be very efficient cloud- and ice condensation nuclei and thus can influence cloud properties such as cloud phase, albedo and lifetime, thereby affecting the Earth’s climate as well as biogeochemical cycles. As the Earth is 70% covered by oceans, of which most could be characterized as remote, quantifying the PBAP emissions over these waters are important for the enhancement of climate models. The role aerosol chemical composition plays in Arctic low-level cloud formation is still poorly understood. In this study we address this issue by combining in situ observations of the chemical characteristics of cloud residuals (dried liquid cloud droplets or ice crystals) and aerosol particles from the Zeppelin Observatory in Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard (approx. 480 m a.s.l.). These measurements were part of the 1-year-long Ny-Ålesund Aerosol and Cloud Experiment 2019–2020 (NASCENT). To obtain the chemical composition of cloud residuals at molecular level, we deployed a Filter Inlet for Gases and AEROsols coupled to a Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometer (FIGAERO-CIMS) with iodide as the reagent ion behind a ground-based counterflow virtual impactor (GCVI). The station was enshrouded in clouds roughly 15 % of the time during NASCENT, out of which we analyzed 14 cloud events between December 2019 and December 2020. During the entire year, the composition of the cloud residuals shows contributions from oxygenated organic compounds, including organonitrates, and traces of the biomass burning tracer levoglucosan. In summer, methanesulfonic acid (MSA), an oxidation product of dimethyl sulfide (DMS), shows large contributions to the sampled mass, indicating marine natural sources of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and ice nucleating particle (INP) mass during the sunlit part of the year. In addition, we also find contributions of the inorganic acids nitric acid and sulfuric acid, with outstanding high absolute signals of sulfuric acid in one cloud residual sample in spring and one in late summer (21 May and 12 September 2020), probably caused by high anthropogenic sulfur emissions near the Barents Sea and Kara Sea. During one particular cloud event, on 18 May 2020, the air mass origin did not change before, during, or after the cloud. One of the most prominent mesoscale phenomena in the coastal zone is the sea-breeze/land-breeze circulation. The pattern and its implications for the weather in coastal areas are well described, and with mesoscale-resolving operational NWP models the circulation can be captured. In this study, a straightforward method to identify sea and land breezes based on the change in wind direction in the column above a grid point on the coastline is presented. The method was tested for southern Sweden using archived output from the HARMONIE-AROME model with promising results, describing both the seasonal and diurnal cycles well. In areas with a complex coastline, such as narrow straits, the concept of the land–sea breeze becomes less clear, and several ways to address this problem for the suggested method are discussed. With an operational index of the sea and land breezes, the forecaster can better understand and express the weather situation and add value for people in the coastal zone. Further, the indices can be used to study systematic biases in the model and to create climatologies of the sea and land breezes.

This work presents a methodology for the Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) of the continuous transition of atmospheric stability over forests along the diurnal cycle and its effect on the turbulence characteristics of wind turbine wakes. The forest is modelled as a porous surface where temperature changes, transferred to the air via sensible transport, are caused by the variation of net radiation and in proportion to the tree height and leaf density. The flow is driven by a pressure gradient including Coriolis forcing to allow for the development of nocturnal inertial oscillations. An actuator disk is employed to model the wake of a wind turbine located in Ryningsnas, Sweden, for which metmast measurements are available to carry out a comparison. Results show a good prediction of the inflow and wake characteristics during daytime whereas turbulence fluctuations seem to be overestimated during night periods, attributed to a combination of an excess in geostrophic velocity and coarse mesh resolution. Observations of velocity, heat flux, potential temperature, velocity spectra and other higher order statistics are used to characterize the diurnal variations both in the inflow and across the wake. The results show that the model is capable of representing the turbulence flow dynamics during the diurnal stability transition, hence laying the ground to future studies to assess the performance of wind parks over forested areas.

We investigate the link between warm-temperature extremes in Europe and the persistence of large-scale atmospheric-circulation patterns for both winter and summer, along with some possible physical mechanisms connecting the two. We assess atmospheric persistence, leveraging concepts from dynamical systems theory, and reconcile this approach with the more conventional meteorological views of persistence. We find that wintertime warm spells are partly associated with persistent zonal advection at the surface level but display no statistically significant persistence anomaly in the mid-troposphere. For summertime heatwaves, we find a weak yet significant link to anomalously persistent circulation patterns in the mid-troposphere, while there are few significant persistence anomalies of the surface circulation pattern. We further find no evidence of a strong warm-temperature advection signal. This suggests that other radiative and dynamical processes, for example sensible heating and adiabatic warming, as well as local effects, could play a more important role than large-scale warm-temperature advection for these events. We thus argue that persistent atmospheric configurations are not a necessary requirement for warm-temperature extremes and that the results depend to a considerable extent on region and tropospheric level.

In recent decades, the Arctic has warmed faster than the global mean, especially during winter. This has been attributed to various causes, with recent studies highlighting the importance of enhanced downward infrared radiation associated with anomalous inflow of warm, moist air from lower latitudes. Here, we study wintertime surface energy bud-get (SEB) anomalies over Arctic sea ice on synoptic time scales, using ERA5 (1979-2020). We introduce a new algorithm to identify areas with extreme, positive daily mean SEB anomalies and connect them to form spatiotemporal life cycle events. Most of these events are associated with large-scale inflow from the Atlantic and Paciflc Oceans, driven by pole-ward deflection of the storm track and blocks over northern Eurasia and Alaska. Events originate near the ice edge, where they have roughly equal contributions of net longwave radiation and turbulent fluxes to the positive SEB anomaly. As the events move farther into the Arctic, SEB anomalies decrease due to weakening sensible and latent heat-flux anomalies, while the surface temperature anomaly increases toward the peak of the events along with the downward longwave radia-tion anomaly. Due to these temporal and spatial differences, the largest SEB anomalies are not always related to strongest surface warming. Thus, studying temperature anomalies alone might not be sufflcient to determine sea ice changes. This study highlights the importance of turbulent fluxes in driving SEB anomalies and downward longwave radiation in deter-mining local surface warming. Therefore, both processes need to be accurately represented in climate models. Complex interactions between aerosols, clouds, and radiation impact Earth's climate. However, several aspects of these interactions remain uncertain, which has led to extensive research over the last decades. This thesis explores some unresolved aspects by focusing on subtropical low-level stratocumulus (Sc) clouds, which have a significant cooling effect on climate. The clouds are also sensitive to varying aerosol conditions, which can influence their formation, properties, and lifetime. Clouds over the South East Atlantic have been studied in detail, using both numerical modeling and satellite observations, to shed light on the interactions between aerosols, clouds, and radiation. This geographical region displays a large and semi-permanent Sc cloud deck and is also subjected to meteorological conditions that bring large amounts of light-absorbing aerosols from biomass fires over the African continent. The biomass-burning plumes also bring enhanced levels of moisture, and the individual influence of the aerosols and the moisture on the low-level cloud properties have been investigated. The analysis of satellite retrievals showed a radiative impact (sensitive to aerosol composition and aerosol optical depth) of moist aerosol layers in the free troposphere over the South East Atlantic; however, it was not possible to observe a clear influence of these humid aerosol layers on the underlying low-level clouds. Aerosol-radiation interactions were implemented in a large eddy simulation (LES) code that was used to model stratocumulus to cumulus transitions (SCT) in weather situations where moist absorbing aerosol layers were in contact with low-level clouds and mixed into the marine boundary layer (MBL). In these simulations, the heating by the absorbing aerosol within the MBL affected the persistence of the Sc clouds by accelerating the SCT, especially during daylight and broken cloud conditions. The Sahel, a water-vulnerable region in West Africa, relies heavily on rainfed agriculture. The region experienced pronounced droughts during the 20th Century, emphasising the socio-economic importance of understanding the drivers of the rainfall variability. However, future rainfall projections remain uncertain due to the complex nature of the West African Monsoon (WAM), which is influenced by internal climate variability, external forcing, and feedback processes. Limited observational records in West Africa and the need for longer time series further complicate the understanding of these drivers. This thesis uses paleoclimate modelling to investigate internal and external drivers of monsoon variability in West Africa across four distinct periods. Our study confirms that atmosphere-only model simulations can capture the observed multidecadal rainfall variability in the 20th Century, even though reanalyses struggle to reproduce the correct timing. Analysis of a last millennium simulation using the Earth System Model EC-Earth3 identified two drivers of multidecadal rainfall variability, accounting for 90% of the total co-variability between the West African rainfall and Atlantic sea surface temperatures (SSTs). This finding strengthens our understanding of SST-WAM relationships observed during the 20th Century. An ensemble of climate model simulations (PlioMIP2) shows that high CO2 levels and a different paleogeography during the mid-Pliocene Warm Period led to increased rainfall and a strengthened WAM. Our study emphasised vegetation's crucial role in enhancing the monsoon in past climates. However, simulations forced with prescribed vegetation only capture a one-directional forcing. A mid-Holocene simulation using an Earth System Model with dynamic vegetation revealed that vegetation feedbacks strengthen the WAM response to external orbital forcing but are insufficient to shift the monsoon northward or increase vegetation cover over the Sahara. We present the first 3D triangulation of Transient Luminous Events (TLEs) over Africa. The 6 TLEs were simultaneously observed in the middle atmosphere from Sutherland and Carnarvon in South Africa, separated by 192 km, during the 2019 sprites campaign. These two distinctive locations have low radio interference and are free from light pollution. The lightning times, locations, peak current, and polarities, which initiated the observed TLEs, were obtained from the South African Lightning Detection Network and Earth Networks Total Lightning Networks. We investigate the TLEs' altitude and horizontal displacement from their parent lightning strokes. TLEs appear approximately 12.5 to 49.3 km away from their parent lightning strokes. We found that TLE altitudes range from 29 to 92.6 km. The lightning electric field and peak current may be related to the displacement of TLEs and the TLEs' horizontal spread., QC 20230524

Medium-Term Wind Power Forecasting (MTWPF), with a 7-day forecasting horizon, can provide important support for dispatch plans in the power system and trading strategies in the electricity market. Existing MTWPF methods usually use the Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) to map the power generated by wind farms. However, the accuracy of the NWP decreases as the forecasting horizon increases, which reduces the performance of the MTWPF. In this paper, we propose a MTWPF model based on multi-head Dynamic Self-Attention mechanism (DSA-MTWPF), which dynamically adjusts the mapping between NWP and wind power according to the change in forecasting horizon. The dark period in long air gap discharges has been assumed in the literature as the time between consecutive streamer current pulses when ionization and luminosity are absent. These dark periods are also present in natural lightning, in processes such as the inception and propagation of upward positive leaders, the development of needles, as well as transient luminous events in the upper atmosphere. Only recently, faint luminosity has been observed during dark periods, challenging this assumption. This paper aims to study any possible electrical activity during dark periods by means of experiments supported by computer simulation. Therefore, an experimental platform, including low-current measurements, Schlieren and standard photography as well as ultraviolet (UV)-photon detection was used to observe the electrical-optical-thermal characteristics of the dark period. A complementary numerical model was used to estimate the streamer space charge spatial distribution and its drift during dark periods. It is found that faint UV and visible light during the dark period is emitted exactly at the location of the low-density streamer stem channel. This process is accompanied by the generation of an electronic current in the order of hundred microamps to milliamps. The simulation results show that this ionization activity occurs due to strong reduced electric fields in the residual stem channel above 112 Td, which is mainly determined by a combination of applied voltage, space charge distribution, and localized heating. Thus, the presented results show that there is indeed ionization activity during dark periods in long air gaps, which maintains a continuous glow-like discharge., QC 20230621

The concentration of carbon dioxide and methane in the atmosphere has significantly increased over the last 60 years. One of the factors in the growth of methane and its homologue emissions is the intense thawing of gas hydrates, mainly from the Arctic shelf, which remains one of the less studied sources of atmospheric hydrocarbon emissions. Oxidation of methane and light-saturated hydrocarbons by ozone in the upper part of the atmosphere leads to the formation of CO2. The analysis of several datasets presented in this paper allows us to find the correlation between CH4 and CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere. This finding suggests that methane and its homologues released from gas hydrates mainly in the Arctic shelf zone become a significant source of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Accounting for temporal changes in carbon dioxide (CO2) effluxes from freshwaters remains a challenge for global and regional carbon budgets. Here, we synthesize 171 site-months of flux measurements of CO2 based on the eddy covariance method from 13 lakes and reservoirs in the Northern Hemisphere, and quantify dynamics at multiple temporal scales. We found pronounced sub-annual variability in CO2 flux at all sites. By accounting for diel variation, only 11% of site-months were net daily sinks of CO2. Annual CO2 emissions had an average of 25% (range 3%-58%) interannual variation. Similar to studies on streams, nighttime emissions regularly exceeded daytime emissions. Biophysical regulations of CO2 flux variability were delineated through mutual information analysis. Sample analysis of CO2 fluxes indicate the importance of continuous measurements. Better characterization of short- and long-term variability is necessary to understand and improve detection of temporal changes of CO2 fluxes in response to natural and anthropogenic drivers. Our results indicate that existing global lake carbon budgets relying primarily on daytime measurements yield underestimates of net emissions.

We considered three events on 4 November 2015, 22 December 2016, and 12 November 2018, when the signals travelling in the polar winter mesosphere with high horizontal velocities above 300 m/s were measured by the atmospheric radar ESRAD (Chilson et al., 1999) located at Esrange, near Kiruna in northern Sweden. We proposed four mechanisms of generation of such special cases of polar mesosphere echoes, e.g. high-speed PMWE, that involve microbaroms, i.e. infrasound waves at 0.1 - 0.35 Hz frequencies created by ocean swell. These mechanisms are (i) generation of viscous waves, (ii) generation of thermal waves, (iii) direct contributions of infrasound, and (iv) generation of secondary waves at sound dissipation. These processes necessarily accompany sound propagation in inhomogeneous, thermally conducting and viscous fluid (air). The four models were theoretically analysed and their efficiency was estimated. The infrasound measurements at the IS37 station (Gibbons et al., 2019) located about 170 km north-west from the ESRAD radar, modelled maps of the microbarom sources, infrasound propagation conditions and ionospheric conditions for these three PMWE events support the proposed models. Infrasound-generated thermal waves are suggested to be the most probable specific cause of the observed high-speed, high-aspect-ratio PMWE events. This study investigated the climate effect under consecutive winters on the arrival delay of high-speed passenger trains. Inhomogeneous Markov chain model and stratified Cox model were adopted to account for the time-varying risks of train delays. The inhomogeneous Markov chain modelling used covariates weather variables, train operational direction, and findings from the primary delay analysis through stratified Cox model. The results showed that temperature, snow depth, ice/snow precipitation, and train operational direction significantly impacted the arrival delay. Further, by partitioning the train line into three segments as per transition intensity, the model identified that the middle segment had the highest chance of a transfer from punctuality to delay, and the last segment had the lowest probability of recovering from delayed state. The performance of the fitted inhomogeneous Markov chain model was evaluated by the walk-forward validation method, which indicated that approximately 9% of trains may be misclassified as having arrival delays by the fitted model at a measuring point on the train line. With the model performance, the fitted model could be beneficial for both travellers to plan their trips reasonably and railway operators to design more efficient and wiser train schedules as per weather condition., NoICE

Accounting for temporal changes in carbon dioxide (CO2) effluxes from freshwaters remains a challenge for global and regional carbon budgets. Here, we synthesize 171 site-months of flux measurements of CO2 based on the eddy covariance method from 13 lakes and reservoirs in the Northern Hemisphere, and quantify dynamics at multiple temporal scales. We found pronounced sub-annual variability in CO2 flux at all sites. By accounting for diel variation, only 11% of site-months were net daily sinks of CO2. Annual CO2 emissions had an average of 25% (range 3%-58%) interannual variation. Similar to studies on streams, nighttime emissions regularly exceeded daytime emissions. Biophysical regulations of CO2 flux variability were delineated through mutual information analysis. Sample analysis of CO2 fluxes indicate the importance of continuous measurements. Better characterization of short- and long-term variability is necessary to understand and improve detection of temporal changes of CO2 fluxes in response to natural and anthropogenic drivers. Our results indicate that existing global lake carbon budgets relying primarily on daytime measurements yield underestimates of net emissions.

We investigate the link between warm-temperature extremes in Europe and the persistence of large-scale atmospheric-circulation patterns for both winter and summer, along with some possible physical mechanisms connecting the two. We assess atmospheric persistence, leveraging concepts from dynamical systems theory, and reconcile this approach with the more conventional meteorological views of persistence. We find that wintertime warm spells are partly associated with persistent zonal advection at the surface level but display no statistically significant persistence anomaly in the mid-troposphere. For summertime heatwaves, we find a weak yet significant link to anomalously persistent circulation patterns in the mid-troposphere, while there are few significant persistence anomalies of the surface circulation pattern. We further find no evidence of a strong warm-temperature advection signal. This suggests that other radiative and dynamical processes, for example sensible heating and adiabatic warming, as well as local effects, could play a more important role than large-scale warm-temperature advection for these events. We thus argue that persistent atmospheric configurations are not a necessary requirement for warm-temperature extremes and that the results depend to a considerable extent on region and tropospheric level.

One of the most prominent mesoscale phenomena in the coastal zone is the sea-breeze/land-breeze circulation. The pattern and its implications for the weather in coastal areas are well described, and with mesoscale-resolving operational NWP models the circulation can be captured. In this study, a straightforward method to identify sea and land breezes based on the change in wind direction in the column above a grid point on the coastline is presented. The method was tested for southern Sweden using archived output from the HARMONIE-AROME model with promising results, describing both the seasonal and diurnal cycles well. In areas with a complex coastline, such as narrow straits, the concept of the land–sea breeze becomes less clear, and several ways to address this problem for the suggested method are discussed. With an operational index of the sea and land breezes, the forecaster can better understand and express the weather situation and add value for people in the coastal zone. Further, the indices can be used to study systematic biases in the model and to create climatologies of the sea and land breezes.

Dimethyl sulfide (DMS), a gas produced by phytoplankton, is the largest source of atmospheric sulfur over marine areas. DMS undergoes oxidation in the atmosphere to form a range of oxidation products, out of which sulfuric acid (SA) is well known for participating in the formation and growth of atmospheric aerosol particles, and the same is also presumed for methanesulfonic acid (MSA). Recently, a new oxidation product of DMS, hydroperoxymethyl thioformate (HPMTF), was discovered and later also measured in the atmosphere. Little is still known about the fate of this compound and its potential to partition into the particle phase. In this study, we present a full year (2020) of concurrent gas- and particle-phase observations of HPMTF, MSA, SA and other DMS oxidation products at the Zeppelin Observatory (Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard) located in the Arctic. This is the first time HPMTF has been measured in Svalbard and attempted to be observed in atmospheric particles. The results show that gas-phase HPMTF concentrations largely follow the same pattern as MSA during the sunlit months (April–September), indicating production of HPMTF around Svalbard. However, HPMTF was not observed in significant amounts in the particle phase, despite high gas-phase levels. Particulate MSA and SA were observed during the sunlit months, although the highest median levels of particulate SA were measured in February, coinciding with the highest gaseous SA levels with assumed anthropogenic origin. We further show that gas- and particle-phase MSA and SA are coupled in May–July, whereas HPMTF lies outside of this correlation due to the low particulate concentrations. These results provide more information about the relationship between HPMTF and other DMS oxidation products, in a part of the world where these have not been explored yet, and about HPMTF's ability to contribute to particle growth and cloud formation.
