1. Efficient Unsupervised Visual Representation Learning with Explicit Cluster Balancing

Abstract

Self-supervised learning has recently emerged as the preeminent pretraining paradigm across and between modalities, with remarkable results. In the image domain specifically, group (or cluster) discrimination has been one of the most successful methods. However, such frameworks need to guard against heavily imbalanced cluster assignments to prevent collapse to trivial solutions. Existing works typically solve this by reweighing cluster assignments to promote balance, or with offline operations (e.g. regular re-clustering) that prevent collapse. However, the former typically requires large batch sizes, which leads to increased resource requirements, and the latter introduces scalability issues with regard to large datasets. In this work, we propose ExCB, a framework that tackles this problem with a novel cluster balancing method. ExCB estimates the relative size of the clusters across batches and balances them by adjusting cluster assignments, proportionately to their relative size and in an online manner. Thereby, it overcomes previous methods' dependence on large batch sizes and is fully online, and therefore scalable to any dataset. We conduct extensive experiments to evaluate our approach and demonstrate that ExCB: a) achieves state-of-the-art results with significantly reduced resource requirements compared to previous works, b) is fully online, and therefore scalable to large datasets, and c) is stable and effective even with very small batch sizes., Comment: Accepted at ECCV 2024

2. Aligned Unsupervised Pretraining of Object Detectors with Self-training

Abstract

The unsupervised pretraining of object detectors has recently become a key component of object detector training, as it leads to improved performance and faster convergence during the supervised fine-tuning stage. Existing unsupervised pretraining methods, however, typically rely on low-level information to define proposals that are used to train the detector. Furthermore, in the absence of class labels for these proposals, an auxiliary loss is used to add high-level semantics. This results in complex pipelines and a task gap between the pretraining and the downstream task. We propose a framework that mitigates this issue and consists of three simple yet key ingredients: (i) richer initial proposals that do encode high-level semantics, (ii) class pseudo-labeling through clustering, that enables pretraining using a standard object detection training pipeline, (iii) self-training to iteratively improve and enrich the object proposals. Once the pretraining and downstream tasks are aligned, a simple detection pipeline without further bells and whistles can be directly used for pretraining and, in fact, results in state-of-the-art performance on both the full and low data regimes, across detector architectures and datasets, by significant margins. We further show that our pretraining strategy is also capable of pretraining from scratch (including the backbone) and works on complex images like COCO, paving the path for unsupervised representation learning using object detection directly as a pretext task.

3. DivClust: Controlling Diversity in Deep Clustering

Abstract

Clustering has been a major research topic in the field of machine learning, one to which Deep Learning has recently been applied with significant success. However, an aspect of clustering that is not addressed by existing deep clustering methods, is that of efficiently producing multiple, diverse partitionings for a given dataset. This is particularly important, as a diverse set of base clusterings are necessary for consensus clustering, which has been found to produce better and more robust results than relying on a single clustering. To address this gap, we propose DivClust, a diversity controlling loss that can be incorporated into existing deep clustering frameworks to produce multiple clusterings with the desired degree of diversity. We conduct experiments with multiple datasets and deep clustering frameworks and show that: a) our method effectively controls diversity across frameworks and datasets with very small additional computational cost, b) the sets of clusterings learned by DivClust include solutions that significantly outperform single-clustering baselines, and c) using an off-the-shelf consensus clustering algorithm, DivClust produces consensus clustering solutions that consistently outperform single-clustering baselines, effectively improving the performance of the base deep clustering framework., Comment: Accepted for publication in CVPR 2023

Abstract

There is an overarching theme in Science Education to integrate in the school and university curriculum interdisciplinary state-of-art innovations. The field of Nanotechnology is such an example, because it combines the aforementioned interdisciplinarity and novelty with a well-documented educational value. Herein, a novel teaching approach concerning size-dependent properties at the nanoscale for chemistry and physics undergraduate students is proposed. The analysis of the scientific content and its following reconstruction for teaching purposes is based on the theoretical framework of the Model of Educational Reconstruction (MER). This analysis yielded two fundamental concepts and a series of activities that can be the main core of teaching Nanotechnology at a university level.

Abstract

Previous research emphasizes the significance of key performance metrics in determining match outcomes. The purpose of this study is to enhance the understanding of success in professional soccer by analyzing the relationship between match outcomes (win, lose, draw) and various Performance Indicators extracted from the Greek soccer league, as well as to develop a regression model of success in soccer. The sample consisted of all 91 matches from the first round of the 2020–2021 season of the Greek Football League. Utilizing Kruskal–Wallis tests, significant differences were found in goals scored, shots, and shots on target, ball possession, passing metrics, touches in the penalty area, and average shot distance (p < 0.05), with winning teams having demonstrated superior performance metrics. Moreover, winning teams engaged more in positional attacks and counterattacks with shots (p < 0.05). The binary logistic regression model applied to predict match outcomes identified shots on target, counterattacks, passes metrics, offensive duels and set pieces (penalties, free kicks) as key factors influencing the likelihood of winning (p < 0.05). These findings collectively highlight the importance of effective offensive play, including goal scoring, shooting accuracy, and ball possession, in determining the outcomes of soccer matches, with the regression model offering a nuanced understanding of these relationships. 7. Effects of Vertical and Horizontal Jumping Asymmetries on Linear and Change-of-Direction Speed Performance of Female Soccer Players.

Abstract

In recent years, along with the remarkable development of women's soccer, significant attention has been given to the study of asymmetry in lower limbs. However, there is uncertainty about whether and to what extent jumping asymmetries affect the performance of female soccer players. The aims of this study were to examine (a) possible asymmetries in jumping ability and (b) the correlations between asymmetries and performance of female soccer players in 10 m and 30 m speed tests, as well as in change-of-direction speed tests. The study involved 12 adolescent (age: 15.8 ± 0.8 years, body mass: 59.4 ± 7 kg and height: 160.5 ± 5.1 cm) and 10 adult female soccer players (age: 22.3 ± 4.4 years, body mass: 62.2 ± 7.5 kg and height: 165.7 ± 6.1 cm). Pearson's correlations showed no statistically significant relationships between vertical and horizontal asymmetries and time in 10 m, 30 m and 505 change-of-direction speed tests for adolescent players. In adult players, a significantly high correlation was found between asymmetries in single-leg hop tests (for distance) and time in 505 change-of-direction speed tests (r = 0.68, p < 0.05). Adult players showed higher asymmetry values in vertical and horizontal jump tests, but these asymmetries were not significant (p > 0.05). Practitioners are recommended to implement strength and power training programs, as well as injury prevention protocols, aiming to reduce asymmetries, in order to minimize the risk of injuries, and potentially improve performance of female soccer players in certain fitness tests. Abstract

DETR-based object detectors have achieved remarkable performance but are sample-inefficient and exhibit slow convergence. Unsupervised pretraining has been found to be helpful to alleviate these impediments, allowing training with large amounts of unlabeled data to improve the detector's performance. However, existing methods have their own limitations, like keeping the detector's backbone frozen in order to avoid performance degradation and utilizing pretraining objectives misaligned with the downstream task. To overcome these limitations, we propose a simple pretraining framework for DETR-based detectors that consists of three simple yet key ingredients: (i) richer, semantics-based initial proposals derived from high-level feature maps, (ii) discriminative training using object pseudo-labels produced via clustering, (iii) self-training to take advantage of the improved object proposals learned by the detector. We report two main findings: (1) Our pretraining outperforms prior DETR pretraining works on both the full and low data regimes by significant margins. (2) We show we can pretrain DETR from scratch (including the backbone) directly on complex image datasets like COCO, paving the path for unsupervised representation learning directly using DETR.

Abstract

It is not difficult to provide a (mainly descriptive) definition of Business Excellence (BE), as several researchers have come up with different ones. The dimensions, content, and essence of excellence, in principle, are difficult to be summarized in a single-meaning (or even multi-meaning) definition. It is a way of thinking and a philosophical system, and as such, undergoes an evolutionary process that continuously and dynamically shapes its content and form. Nevertheless, for the economy of the discussion, a definition of the concept is given: "excellent is the organization that tries to satisfy all those involved in its operations, customers, suppliers, people, partners, society, etc., through what it achieves, the way it achieves it and based on what it aims to achieve". The new globalized economy has created a different reality in the corporate landscape. Technology itself can no longer give businesses what they need to increase their performance. Intangible factors are not taken seriously even though they play an important role in performance and sustainability. Human resource management can become the driving force for an organization. Hence, if it tries to change its culture and invest in its people by training, motivating, and inspiring them, then it is on a good truck on its way to excellence. This textbook examines the evolution of Business Excellence, its dimensions and international assessment frameworks. In addition, the cost of quality, quality measurement tools and quality management systems are examined. Moreover, the relationship of BE with innovation, corporate social responsibility and knowledge management are analyzed. Finally, the textbook concludes with examining the extent to which the financial crisis of the last decade has affected the quality of businesses in Greece., Δεν είναι δύσκολο να δώσει κανείς έναν ορισμό (περιγραφικό ως επί το πλείστον) για την Επιχειρησιακή Αριστεία (ΕΑ), καθώς αρκετοί ερευνητές προτείνουν διάφορους. Οι διαστάσεις, το περιεχόμενο και η ουσία της αριστείας, καταρχήν, δύσκολα εγκλωβίζονται σ’ έναν μονοσήμαντο (ή και πολυσήμαντο) ορισμό. Οι άυλοι παράγοντες δεν λαμβάνονται σοβαρά υπόψη παρόλο που παίζουν σπουδαίο ρόλο στην απόδοση και τη βιωσιμότητα. Η διοίκηση των ανθρώπινων πόρων μπορεί να γίνει η κινητήριος δύναμη για μια επιχείρηση. Έτσι, εάν προσπαθήσει να αλλάξει την κουλτούρα της και να επενδύσει στους ανθρώπους της με το να τους εκπαιδεύσει, να τους παρακινήσει και να τους εμπνεύσει, τότε βρίσκεται σε καλό σημείο στον δρόμο προς την αριστεία. Το παρόν σύγγραμμα εξετάζει την εξελικτική πορεία της EA, τις διαστάσεις της και τα διεθνή μοντέλα αξιολόγησης. Ακόμη, αναλύονται το κόστος της ποιότητας, τα εργαλεία μέτρησης της ποιότητας και τα συστήματα διαχείρισης της ποιότητας. Επίσης, μελετώνται οι σχέσεις της EA με την καινοτομία, την εταιρική κοινωνική ευθύνη και τη διαχείριση γνώσης. Abstract

This paper offers a descriptive analysis of TQM and business excellence measurement (BEM) by synthesising the relevant literature. There is need for a sound theoretical framework classifying past efforts and guiding future research. To fill the gap, a research of the published BEM literature is undertaken. Specifically, the target is to advance a concrete understanding of relevant literature and to assess whether the temporal trends in BEM literature will help position firms for the emerging business excellence context. An updated review, classification and analysis of the research in business excellence literature spanning the last two and a half decades is presented. A total of 139 papers are identified from 39 refereed management journals published from 1990 to 2016. These articles are then classified and analysed according to the following axes: business sector, framework used and methodology applied. Abstract

The importance of tourism to Greece, the criticality of the hotel sector to its growth and the relationship between turbulent business environment and sustainability provide the rationale for this study. The target of this paper is to propose a new modus operandi for achieving sustainable business excellence under a turbulent environment. Drawing from the existing literature, a framework is proposed that investigates the relationships between intellectual capital, leadership, services quality, supply chain, hotel impact and strategy. The model was tested using a sample of 84 high class hotels in Greece and analysed with the structural equation modelling. The various factors incorporated in the proposed model were measured using valid scales adapted from previous studies. The results confirm that leadership excellence positively affects intellectual capital. It is also found that intellectual capital has a positive effect on services quality, supply chain, hotel impact and strategy. Abstract

A simple method for the synthesis of formate esters and formamides is presented based on the Au/TiO2-catalyzed aerobic oxidative coupling between alcohols or amines and formaldehyde. The suitable form of formaldehyde is paraformaldehyde, as cyclic trimeric 1,3,5-trioxane is inactive. The reaction proceeds via the formation of an intermediate hemiacetal or hemiaminal, respectively, followed by the Au nanoparticle-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of the intermediate. Typically, the oxidative coupling between formaldehyde (2 equiv) and amines occurs quantitatively at room temperature within 4 h, and there is no need to add a base as in analogous coupling reactions. The oxidative coupling between formaldehyde (typically 3 equiv) and alcohols is unprecedented and occurs more slowly, yet in good to excellent yields and selectivity. Minor side-products (2-12%) from the acetalization of formaldehyde by the alcohol are also formed. The catalyst is recyclable and can be reused after a simple filtration in five consecutive runs with a small loss of activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate: a) the differences in external load (EL) during microcycles with four (MIC4) and five training (MIC5) sessions, b) to explore the ratio of weekly training load to the load of the subsequent match, and c) to explore possible correlations between the EL of the MIC4 or MIC5 with the running performance of football players in the following match. The study involved 20 elite youth football players from a team that won the championship in their category that year (age, 16.4 ± 0.3 years). The EL was tracked via GPS in 8 MIC4 and 10 MIC5. Running performance in subsequent matches was also recorded. Two by two ANOVA was employed to compare parameters between MIC5 and MIC4 and Pearson correlation test was applied to examine potential correlations between the training load parameters. The results showed that MIC5 had significantly greater external load in distance parameters in zones 4 & 5, total distance, and decelerations. Differences in running performance in matches were observed only for accelerations (p = .028) and decelerations (p = .02). The ratio of training/match load was lower in all parameters in MIC4 compared to MIC5 but exceeded the match load. Large negative correlations were observed for accelerations and decelerations. In conclusion, additional training in MIC5 increases the load without affecting running performance in the match. Attention should be given to accelerations and decelerations, as their volume can easily increase with the use of small-sided games in training. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The identification of high-risk patients in the early stages of infected pancreatic necrosis (IPN) is critical, because it could help the clinicians to adopt more effective management strategies. We conducted a post hoc analysis of the MANCTRA-1 international study to assess the association between clinical risk factors and mortality among adult patients with IPN. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify prognostic factors of mortality. We identified 247 consecutive patients with IPN hospitalised between January 2019 and December 2020. History of uncontrolled arterial hypertension (p = 0.032; 95% CI 1.135–15.882; aOR 4.245), qSOFA (p = 0.005; 95% CI 1.359–5.879; aOR 2.828), renal failure (p = 0.022; 95% CI 1.138–5.442; aOR 2.489), and haemodynamic failure (p = 0.018; 95% CI 1.184–5.978; aOR 2.661), were identified as independent predictors of mortality in IPN patients. Cholangitis (p = 0.003; 95% CI 1.598–9.930; aOR 3.983), abdominal compartment syndrome (p = 0.032; 95% CI 1.090–6.967; aOR 2.735), and gastrointestinal/intra-abdominal bleeding (p = 0.009; 95% CI 1.286–5.712; aOR 2.710) were independently associated with the risk of mortality. Upfront open surgical necrosectomy was strongly associated with the risk of mortality (p p = 0.018; 95% CI 0.138–0.834; aOR 0.339) and enteral nutrition (p = 0.003; 95% CI 0.143–0.716; aOR 0.320) were found as protective factors. Organ failure, acute cholangitis, and upfront open surgical necrosectomy were the most significant predictors of mortality. Our study confirmed that, even in a subgroup of particularly ill patients such as those with IPN, upfront open surgery should be avoided as much as possible. Abstract

Background: Current studies on counterattacks are limited despite the fact that it is one of the most effective ways to score in soccer. The aim of the study was to investigate the characteristics of counterattacks in the Spanish league (La Liga) for the year 2021-2022., Methods: The sample used in the study were 2631 counterattacks collected from a total of 380 games. The variables used were: 1) the space which the counterattack had started; 2) the number of players who participated; 3) the number of defending players; 4) the duration of the counterattack; 5) the touches to complete the counterattack; 6) the formation of both teams; 7) the way that counterattack was completed (final action); 8) the minute that the counterattack took place; and 9) which team had a home advantage. The results were analyzed using the Chi-square test. The level of significance was defined at P<0.05., Results: Firstly, it appeared that most counterattacks began from the axis of the defensive zone lasting 6-15 seconds. There were 3-4 attackers participating against 4-6 defenders, using 5-9 touches. In addition, most of them took place in the 46-60 minute of the game and were completed in a shot., Conclusions: The study can help coaches and analysts to understand the characteristics of the counterattacks and adapt their training in a way to make their teams more effective, both in the attacking and defending phase.
