The paper presents the results of a comprehensive examination and treatment of 158 children and adolescents with nonossifying bone fibroma and skeleton, who referred for specialized medical aid in clinic of Scientific and Research Institute for Children's Orthopedics n. a. G. I. Turner from 1980 to 2013. We defined diagnostic value and the criteria for identifying lesions using X-ray, computed tomography and radionuclide methods. We emphasized the dynamic variability of clinical and radiological manifestations of the pathological process in nonossifying bone fibroma and skeleton and related difficulties in the diagnosis. Accurate indications for the conservative and surgical treatment were pointed out.

We describe a rare case of nonossifying fibroma of the mandible in a 15-year-old boy who presented with a left mandibular swelling. Conventional imaging showed an expansile radiolucent lesion involving the angle and the body of the left mandible. The lesion was curetted, and a miniplate was implanted at the excision site. Microscopic examination of the removed specimen revealed a cellular lesion characterized by a proliferation of uniform spindle-shaped cells in a vague but prominent storiform pattern, which represented the classic appearance of nonossifying fibroma. Three months later, radiography detected a fracture of the implantation plate. The area was re-explored with curettage of the soft tissue, which on microscopy demonstrated findings similar to the initial curettage findings. Follow-up radiology revealed satisfactory healing of the jaw, and no further recurrence was seen 2 years after the initial surgery. We present this case to highlight the importance of recognizing nonossifying fibroma in the mandible, which can be easily confused with more common mandibular lesions.

A 15-year-old young man was referred for evaluation of a non-tender swelling of the left mandibular angle region. A non-ossifying fibroma was diagnosed. The lesion was enucleated under general anesthesia. The postoperative course was uneventful. There have been no signs of recurrence, and there was complete bone regeneration in the region 24 months after operation. This report also reviews other fifteen cases of non-ossifying fibroma in the mandible reported in the literature.

Fibrous cortical defect, also known as metaphyseal fibrous defect and nonossifying fibroma, among other terms, is a benign, non-neoplastic proliferative process that is relatively common in the long bones of skeletally immature adolescents. Although the lesion is thought to be a developmental abnormality or defect, the exact etiopathogenesis is largely unknown. The lesion has a limited growth potential and good treatment outcome. This process is very rare in the gnathic bones, and only a few sporadic case reports are documented. This article presents the clinicopathologic features of 2 additional cases and reviews the relevant literature in attempt to identify key features and facilitate rendering definitive diagnosis for this rare entity.

Introduction: Benign fibrous histiocytoma of bone is a rare tumor. Only few cases have been reported in literature. Case Report: A 45­year­ old female presented with pain in the ankle. Radiological findings revealed osteolytic lesion of talus and histological features were similar to non­ossifying fibroma and metaphyseal fibrous defect. Because of pain, unusal location and unusual age group the lesion was diagnosed as benign fibrous histiocytoma of Talus. Conclusion: Benign fibrous histiocytoma should be considered as one of the histopathological diagnosis although benign fibrous histiocytoma of bone is a rare entity.

A patient with a benign appearing intraosseous fibrous lesion of the cervical vertebra is presented. The lesion had the histologic features of non-ossifying fibroma (metaphyseal fibrous defect). Because of its atypical location and unusual radiologic appearance, the lesion was diagnosed as a fibrous histiocytoma, a tumor whose histology is similar to non-ossifying fibroma. The literature was reviewed for similar cases located outside the metaphysis of the long bones. Support is given for designating such lesions as fibrous histiocytomas rather than non-ossifying fibromas.
