Aims: To compare the association of high serum uric acid (HUA) or metabolic syndrome (MetS) with fatty liver disease (FLD) in youths with overweight/obesity (OW/OB). Materials and Methods: Cross‐sectional study of anthropometrics, biochemical variables, and liver ultrasound of 3104 individuals with OW/OB (age 5–17 years). Metabolic syndrome was defined by ≥ 3 criteria among (1) high waist circumference; (2) high triglycerides; (3) low high‐density lipoproteins; (4) fasting glucose ≥100 mg/dl; (5) blood pressure ≥95th percentile in children, and ≥130/80 mmHg in adolescents. High serum uric acid was defined as serum UA value ≥ 75th percentile adjusted for sex. Fatty liver disease was determined by echography. Results: The sample was stratified in four categories: (1) no HUA, no MetS (reference category); (2) MetS; (3) HUA; (4) HUA and MetS (HUA + MetS). The prevalence of FLD increased across the four categories from 29.9%, 44.0%, 52.2%, to 67.1%, respectively (p < 0.0001). The ORs for the categorical variables were 1.33 (1.06–1.68) for MetS (p = 0.02), 3.19 (2.51–4.05) for HUA (p < 0.0001) and 3.72 (2.65–5.21) for HUA + MetS (p < 0.0001), versus the reference category regardless of the body mass index. Conclusions: HUA represents a useful marker of FLD in youths with OW/OB, given its greater ability to identify those at increased risk of the disease compared to MetS. The present study was conducted to assess the relationship between metabolic syndrome, metabolic syndrome score, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and beta-cell function (HOMA-B) in obese Korean adults. The study included 1,860 adults aged 20 years or older from the 2010 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) data. Metabolic syndrome and metabolic syndrome score (MSS) were positively associated with HOMA-IR (both P＜0.001). HOMA-B levels of elevated blood pressure (P＜0.001) and elevated fasting blood glucose group (P＜0.001) were significantly lower than the normal group. However, the HOMA-B levels of abdominal obesity (P=0.003) and reduced high-density lipoprotein cholesterol group (P=0.030) were significantly higher than the normal group. Nevertheless, metabolic syndrome (P＜0.001) and MSS (P＜0.001) were inversely associated with the HOMA-B levels. In conclusion, metabolic syndrome and MSS were positively associated with insulin resistance and inversely associated with beta-cell function in Korean adults with obesity.

Purpose: We examined the association between dietary folate intake and a score of MetS (metabolic syndrome) and its components among older adults at higher cardiometabolic risk participating in the PREDIMED-Plus trial. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis with 6633 with overweight/obesity participants with MetS was conducted. Folate intake (per 100 mcg/day and in quintiles) was estimated using a validated food frequency questionnaire. We calculated a MetS score using the standardized values as shown in the formula: [(body mass index + waist-to-height ratio)/2] + [(systolic blood pressure + diastolic blood pressure)/2] + plasma fasting glucose–HDL cholesterol + plasma triglycerides. The MetS score as continuous variable and its seven components were the outcome variables. Multiple robust linear regression using MM-type estimator was performed to evaluate the association adjusting for potential confounders. Results: We observed that an increase in energy-adjusted folate intake was associated with a reduction of MetS score (β for 100 mcg/day = − 0.12; 95% CI: − 0.19 to − 0.05), and plasma fasting glucose (β = − 0.03; 95% CI: − 0.05 to − 0.02) independently of the adherence to Mediterranean diet and other potential confounders. We also found a positive association with HDL-cholesterol (β = 0.07; 95% CI: 0.04–0.10). These associations were also observed when quintiles of energy-adjusted folate intake were used instead. Conclusion: This study suggests that a higher folate intake may be associated with a lower MetS score in older adults, a lower plasma fasting glucose, and a greater HDL cholesterol in high-risk cardio-metabolic subjects. Background: The risk of death caused by non-communicable diseases is related to metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome not only occurs in adults, but also occurs in adolescents. The problem of metabolic syndrome in adolescents shows the importance of early detection and management. Early detection of metabolic syndrome in adolescents can be done through non-invasive approaches such as anthropometric measurements. However, the definition of metabolic syndrome has so far not reached an agreement. Objective: This study aims 1) To know the intersection points of adolescent metabolic syndrome 2) To know the best anthropometry parameters for detecting metabolic syndrome in adolescents. Method: This study used cross sectional design, using Riskesdas 2013 survey data. The sample size of this study was 3273 adolescents aged 15-24 years. The analysis using receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) indicated the accuracy of the score to diagnose metabolic syndrome, supported by area under the curve (AUC) results. The best parameters were seen from the largest AUC values, taking into account the sensitivity and specificity values. Results: The metabolic syndrome scores in general for Indonesian adolescents=2.21 (sensitivity=83%, specificity=84%). Specific cutoff point for women=2.02 (sensitivity=84%, specificity=85%), and for males=2.40 (sensitivity=86%, specificity=82%). The best anthropometric parameters for detecting metabolic syndrome in adolescents are abdominal circumference (AUC=0.77; sensitivity=71%, specificity=67%). Conclusion: Abdominal circumference has the best validity and can be used for early detection of the risk of metabolic syndrome in adolescents

Aims: The present study was conducted to assess the association of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and the MetS score (MSS) with β-cell function by gender in Korean non-diabetic populations. Methods: This study used the data from the 2015 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey including 4380 adults, aged 20 or older. Results: After adjusting for related variables (with exception of body mass index [BMI]), MetS (p < 0.001) and MSS (p < 0.001) were positively associated with homeostasis model assessment of β-cell function (HOMA-B), in both men and women. When further adjusting for BMI, MetS (p = 0.002) and MSS (p = 0.006) were positively associated with HOMA-B in women, whereas the association of MetS (p = 0.140) or MSS (p = 0.697) and HOMA-B was no longer significant in men. Conclusion: MetS and MSS increases were positively associated with β-cell function in non-diabetic Korean women, but not in non-diabetic Korean men. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The clinical significance of metabolic syndrome (MS) score, MS, and its individual components with respect to risk prediction of coronary artery disease (CAD) remains unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate whether and to what extent MS score, MS, and its individual components were related to the risk of CAD. Methods: Among 1191 participants who underwent coronary angiography for the confirmation of suspected myocardial ischemia, 858 were included in this study according to the inclusion criteria from September 2010 to June 2013. MS was diagnosed with the 2005 National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III criteria. The severity of coronary atherosclerosis was assessed by Gensini score. Results: The results showed that the age- and sex-adjusted odds ratios (OR s) for CAD were as follows: MS score, 1.327; MS, 2.013; elevated waist circumference, 1.447; reduced high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, 1.654; and elevated fasting glucose, 1.782; all P < 0.05; whereas for elevated triglycerides, 1.324, and elevated blood pressure, 1.342, both P > 0.05. After multivariate adjustment, results showed that only MS and elevated fasting glucose were significantly associated with CAD (OR, 1.628, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.151–2.305, P = 0.006 for elevated fasting glucose, and OR, 1.631, 95% CI, 1.208–2.203, P = 0.001 for MS). The study showed that only MS score and elevated fasting glucose were significantly associated with Gensini score (standardized coefficient, 0.101, P = 0.031 for elevated fasting glucose and standardized coefficient, 0.103, P = 0.009 for MS score). Conclusions: The present study demonstrated that MS score, MS, and its individual components might have different contributions to CAD prevalence and severity. MS and elevated fasting glucose were independent risk factors for the prevalence of angiographic CAD whereas MS score and elevated fasting glucose were significantly associated with the severity of CAD.

The long-term effects of physical activity (PA) or sedentary behavior on cardiovascular health in young people are not well understood. In this study, we use a narrative format to review the evidence for a prospective association with adiposity and other well-established biological cardiovascular risk factors in healthy young people, considering only studies with at least 2 years of follow-up. PA appears to elicit a long-term beneficial effect on adiposity and particularly markers of cardiovascular health. With adiposity, however, a few studies also reported that higher levels of PA were associated with higher levels of adiposity. Time spent sedentary does not appear to be related to adiposity or markers of cardiovascular health independent of PA. We then discuss the uncertainties in the underlying causal chain and consider a number of alternative modeling strategies, which could improve our understanding of the relationship in future studies. Finally, we consider the current methodology for assessing PA and sedentary time.

Objective: Metabolic syndrome and the presence of metabolic syndrome components are risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, the association between personality traits and metabolic syndrome remains controversial, and few studies have been conducted in East Asian populations.Methods: We measured personality traits using the Japanese version of the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (Revised Short Form) and five metabolic syndrome components-elevated waist circumference, elevated triglycerides, reduced high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, elevated blood pressure, and elevated fasting glucose-in 1322 participants aged 51.1±12.7years old from Kakegawa city, Japan. Metabolic syndrome score (MS score) was defined as the number of metabolic syndrome components present, and metabolic syndrome as having the MS score of 3 or higher. We performed multiple logistic regression analyses to examine the relationship between personality traits and metabolic syndrome components and multiple regression analyses to examine the relationship between personality traits and MS scores adjusted for age, sex, education, income, smoking status, alcohol use, and family history of CVD and diabetes mellitus. We also examine the relationship between personality traits and metabolic syndrome presence by multiple logistic regression analyses.Results: "Extraversion" scores were higher in those with metabolic syndrome components (elevated waist circumference: P=0.001; elevated triglycerides: P=0.01; elevated blood pressure: P=0.004; elevated fasting glucose: P=0.002). "Extraversion" was associated with the MS score (coefficient=0.12, P=0.0003). No personality trait was significantly associated with the presence of metabolic syndrome.Conclusions: Higher "extraversion" scores were related to higher MS scores, but no personality trait was significantly associated with the presence of metabolic syndrome. Objective: This study assessed the association of metabolic syndrome and metabolic syndrome score with the predicted forced vital capacity and predicted forced expiratory volume in 1 s (predicted forced expiratory volume in 1 s) values in Korean non-smoking adults. Methods: We analysed data obtained from 6684 adults during the 2013–2015 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Results: After adjustment for related variables, metabolic syndrome (p < 0.001) and metabolic syndrome score (p < 0.001) were found to be inversely associated with the predicted forced vital capacity and forced expiratory volume in 1 s values. The odds ratios of restrictive pulmonary disease (the predicted forced vital capacity < 80.0% with forced expiratory volume in 1 s/FVC ⩾ 70.0%) by metabolic syndrome score with metabolic syndrome score 0 as a reference group showed no significance for metabolic syndrome score 1 [1.061 (95% confidence interval, 0.755–1.490)] and metabolic syndrome score 2 [1.247 (95% confidence interval, 0.890–1.747)], but showed significant for metabolic syndrome score 3 [1.433 (95% confidence interval, 1.010–2.033)] and metabolic syndrome score ⩾ 4 [1.760 (95% confidence interval, 1.216–2.550)]. In addition, the odds ratio of restrictive pulmonary disease of the metabolic syndrome [1.360 (95% confidence interval, 1.118–1.655)] was significantly higher than those of non-metabolic syndrome. Conclusion: Metabolic syndrome and metabolic syndrome score were inversely associated with the predicted forced vital capacity and forced expiratory volume in 1 s values in Korean non-smoking adults. This study assessed the association between gender difference with metabolic syndrome (MetS), metabolic syndrome score (MSS) and serum vitamin D levels in Korean adults. Analyses were restricted to 5147 adults (2162 men; 2985 women) aged 20 and older, using the 2012 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) data. In the non-adjusted model, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels were inversely associated with MetS (p = .001) and MSS (p = .009) in men, but positively associated with MetS (p = .002) and MSS (p < .001) in women. However, when adjusted for related variables (including age), serum 25(OH)D levels were inversely associated with MetS (p < .001) and MSS (p < .001) in men, but were not associated with MetS (p = .200) and MSS (p = .541) in women. Aims/hypothesis: We validated the metabolic syndrome (MetS) score by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) in children, middle-aged men, and older women and men and by investigating the relationships of the MetS score to incident type 2 diabetes, myocardial infarction, and cardiovascular and overall death in middle-aged men. Methods: We assessed the core features of MetS, calculated the MetS score using z scores for waist circumference, insulin, glucose, triacylglycerols, HDL-cholesterol and blood pressure, and carried out CFA to investigate whether MetS represents a single entity in population samples of 491 children, 1,900 middle-aged men, 614 older women and 555 older men from Finland. We also followed-up incident type 2 diabetes for 11 years and other outcomes for 17-18 years in middle-aged men. Results: We carried out second-order CFAs in which the MetS was represented by a second-order latent variable underlying four latent variables characterised by abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidaemia and raised blood pressure in different age groups. These second-order factors and factors derived from first-order CFA using previously proposed models were strongly associated with a composite MetS score in all age groups ( r = 0.84-0.94) and similarly predicted type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular outcomes and mortality in middle-aged men. The risk of type 2 diabetes, myocardial infarction, cardiovascular death and overall death increased 3.67-, 1.38-, 1.56- and 1.44-fold, respectively, for a 1 SD increase in the MetS score. Conclusions: The MetS can be described as a single entity in all age groups. The MetS score is a valid tool for research evaluating cardiometabolic risk in different age groups. The present study was conducted to assess the relationship between metabolic syndrome and metabolic syndrome score (MSS) and serum vitamin D levels in adults aged 20 or older (n = 5,483) using 2012 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data, which represents national data in Korea. Key study results were as follows: First, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels decreased significantly with an increase in MSS (p = 0.004), shown by serum 25(OH)D levels after adjusting the variables (age, gender, BMI, TC, HDL-C, FBS, SBP, and DBP, etc.). These were 17.30 ± 0.16 ng/ml for MSS 0, 17.13 ± 0.15 ng/ml for MSS 1, 17.02 ± 0.16 ng/ml for MSS 2, 16.60 ± 0.20 ng/ml for MSS 3, 16.55 ± 0.28 ng/ml for MSS 4, and 15.52 ± 0.50 ng/ml for MSS 5. Second, after adjusting the related variables, serum 25(OH)D levels were significantly lower (p = 0.004) in the metabolic syndrome group (16.49 ± 0.19 ng/ml) than the non-metabolic syndrome group (17.16 ± 0.09 ng/ml). In conclusion, metabolic syndrome and the increased levels of its components are inversely associated with the serum vitamin D concentration in Korean adults.
