Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a highly prevalent cardiac arrhythmia associated with severe cardiovascular complications. AF presents a growing global challenge, however, current treatment strategies for AF do not address the underlying pathophysiology. To advance diagnosis and treatment of AF, a deeper understanding of AF root causes is needed. Metabolomics is a fast approach to identify, quantify and analyze metabolites in a given sample, such as human serum or atrial tissue. In the past two decades, metabolomics have enabled research on metabolite biomarkers to predict AF, metabolic features of AF, and testing metabolic mechanisms of AF in animal models. Due to the field's rapid evolution, the methods of AF metabolomics studies have not always been optimal. Metabolomics research has lacked standardization and requires expertise to face methodological challenges. We summarize and meta-analyze metabolomics research on AF in human plasma and serum, atrial tissue, and animal models. We present the current progress on metabolic biomarkers candidates, metabolic features of clinical AF, and the translation of metabolomics findings from animal to human. We additionally discuss strengths and weaknesses of the metabolomics method and highlight opportunities for future AF metabolomics research. Previous studies have a lack of meta-analytic studies comparing the trait (personality) envy, social comparison envy, and love-envy, and the understanding of the similarities and differences in the neural mechanisms behind them is relatively unclear. A meta-analysis of activation likelihood estimates was conducted using 13 functional magnetic resonance imaging studies. Studies first used single meta-analyses to identify brain activation areas for the three envy types. Further, joint and comparative analyses were followed to assess the common and unique neural activities among the three envy types. A single meta-analysis showed that the critical brain regions activated by trait (personality) envy included the inferior frontal gyrus, cingulate gyrus, middle frontal gyrus, lentiform nucleus and so on. The critical brain regions activated by social comparison envy included the middle frontal gyrus, inferior frontal gyrus, medial frontal gyrus, precuneus and so on. The critical brain regions activated by love-envy included the inferior frontal gyrus, superior frontal gyrus, cingulate gyrus, insula and so on. In terms of the mechanisms that generate the three types of envy, each of them is unique when it comes to the perception of stimuli in a context; in terms of the emotion regulation mechanisms of envy, the three types of envy share very similar neural mechanisms. Both their generation and regulation mechanisms are largely consistent with the cognitive control model of emotion regulation. The results of the joint analysis showed that the brain areas co-activated by trait (personality) envy and social comparison envy were frontal sub-Gyral, inferior parietal lobule, inferior frontal gyrus, precuneus and so on; the brain areas co-activated by trait (personality) envy and love-envy were extra-nuclear lobule, lentiform nucleus, paracentral lobule, cingulate gyrus and so on; the brain regions that are co-activated by social comparison envy and love-envy are anterior cingulate gyrus, insula, supramarginal gyrus, inferior frontal gyrus and so on. Objective: Fasting is considered to be a food structure that can improve body health. Several randomized clinical trials (RCTs) have investigated the effects of fasting in patients with metabolic syndrome (MS). In this review, we performed a meta-analysis to assess the effects of fasting on patients with MS. Methods: Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Central updated to September 2021. The quality evaluation and heterogeneity detection of the included research literature were carried out by Revman and Stata software through a random-effects model. Results: A total of 268 subjects were included. The pooled results revealed that fasting significantly reduced body weight (WMD: −2.48 kg, 95% CI: −3.22, −1.74), BMI (WMD = −2.72 cm; 95%CI: −4.04, −1.40 cm), body fat percent (WMD: −1.57%, 95%CI: −2.47, −0.68), insulin level (WMD: −2.45 mmol/L; 95%CI: −4.40, −0.49 mmol/L) and HOMA-IR (WMD:-0.65 mmol/L; 95%CI: −0.90, −0.41 mmol/L) in patients with MS, whereas had no effect on glucose, blood pressure and lipids profile. Conclusions: Our findings provide insights into the effect of fasting on the anthropometric outcomes, insulin resistance, and gut microbiota in MS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

[Objective] Due to differences in economic and technological development levels, post-harvest losses (PHL) in different stages of the grain value chain varies greatly across the world. Identifying the extent of PHL and the influencing factors globally can provide crucial information for food loss reduction in China. [Methods] This study focused on grain harvest losses and selected 98 relevant publications according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. We constructed a database of international publications on grain PHL, including academic papers and research reports on four types of grain crops (rice, corn, wheat, and soybean). [Results] The results show that the attention to PHL of grains is increasing globally in the past decades, but focused mainly on the developing countries and regions in Asia, Africa, and South America. On average, the post-harvest grain losses at the global level are 6.651%, but heterogeneity of grain harvest losses existed in different countries due to factors such as climate, harvest methods, technical conditions, and labor quality. Although the introduction of mechanized harvesting has improved the production efficiency, the impacts of non-standard operation and the use of third-party contractor services on harvest losses cannot be ignored. The lack of research on combine harvester performance also limited the application of mechanization technologies. Besides, equipment and facility shortages in the stages of drying and storage also led to increased PHL. [Conclusion] Therefore, we suggest paying more attention to the research of mechanical harvest technologies and operation methods, as well as renewing and revising technical standards continuously and improve the infrastructure environment for harvesting according to domestic economic conditions and industrial development. This study also provided detailed information and policy recommendations for PHL reduction in China.

Background: Postpartum depression (PPD) is the most common complication associated with childbirth and can lead to adverse outcomes for both mothers and their children. A previous meta-analysis found that PPD prevalence varies widely across countries. One potential underexplored contributor to this cross-national variation in PPD is diet, which contributes to mental health and varies significantly around the world. Here, we sought to update the global and national estimates of PPD prevalence using systematic review and meta-analysis. Further, we examined whether cross-national variation in PPD prevalence is associated with cross-national variation in diet using meta-regression. Methods: To estimate national rates of PPD prevalence, we conducted an updated systematic review of all papers reporting PPD prevalence using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale between 2016-2021 and combined our findings with a previousmeta-analysis of articles published between 1985-2015. PPD prevalence and methods were extracted from each study. Random effects meta-analysis was used to estimate global and national PPD prevalence. To examine dietary predictors, we extracted data on sugar-sweetened beverage, fruit, vegetable, total fiber, yogurt, and seafood consumption from the Global Dietary Database. Random effects meta-regression was used to test whether between-country and within-country variation in dietary factors predicted variation in PPD prevalence, controlling for economic and methodological variables. Results: 412 studies of 792,055 women from 46 countries were identified. The global pooled prevalence of PPD was 19.18% (95% confidence interval: 18.02 to 20.34%), ranging from 3% in Singapore to 44% in South Africa. Countries that consumed more sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) had higher rates of PPD (Coef. = 0.325, p = 0.044, CI:0.010-0.680); Moreover, in years when higher rates of sugar-sweetened beverages were consumed in a country, there were correspondingly higher rates of PPD in that country (Coef. = 0.129, p = 0.026, CI: 0.016-0.242). Conclusion: The global prevalence of PPD is greater than previous calculations, and drastically varies by country. Background: Long-term daily health monitoring and management play a more significant role in telehealth management systems nowadays, which require evaluation indicators to present patients' general health conditions and become applicable to multiple chronic diseases. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of subjective indicators of telehealth chronic disease management system (TCDMS). Methods: We selected Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Scopus, Cochrane library, IEEE, and Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure and Wanfang, a Chinese medical database, and searched papers published from January 1, 2015, to July 1, 2022, regarding randomized controlled trials on the effectiveness of the telehealth system on patients with chronic diseases. The narrative review summarized the questionnaire indicators presented in the selected studies. In the meta-analysis, Mean Difference (MD) and Standardized Mean Difference (SMD) with a 95% CI were pooled depending on whether the measurements were the same. Subgroup analysis was conducted if the heterogeneity was significant, and the number of studies was sufficient. Results: Twenty RCTs with 4153 patients were included in the qualitative review. Seventeen different questionnaire-based outcomes were found, within which quality of life, psychological well-being (including depression, anxiety, and fatigue), self-management, self-efficacy, and medical adherence were most frequently used. Ten RCTs with 2095 patients remained in meta-analysis. Compared to usual care, telehealth system can significantly improve the quality of life (SMD 0.44; 95% CI 0.16-0.73; P =.002), whereas no significant effects were found on depression (SMD −0.25; 95% CI −0.72 to 0.23; P =.30), anxiety (SMD −0.10; 95% CI −0.27 to 0.07; P =.71), fatigue (SMD −0.36; 95% CI −1.06 to 0.34; P <.001), and self-care (SMD 0.77; 95% CI −0.28-1.81; P <.001). In the subdomains of quality of life, telehealth statistically significantly improved physical functioning (SMD 0.15; 95% CI 0.02 to 0.29; P =.03), mental functioning (SMD 0.37; 95% CI 0.13-0.60; P =.002), and social functioning (SMD 0.64; 95% CI 0.00-1.29; P =.05), while there was no difference on cognitive functioning (MD 8.31; 95% CI −7.33 to 23.95; P =.30) and role functioning (MD 5.30; 95% CI −7.80 to 18.39; P =.43). Conclusions: TCDMS positively affected patients' physical, mental, and social quality of life across multiple chronic diseases. However, no significant difference was found in depression, anxiety, fatigue, and self-care. Subjective questionnaires had the potential ability to evaluate the effectiveness of long-term telehealth monitoring and management. However, further well-designed experiments are warranted to validate TCDMS's effects on subjective outcomes, especially when tested among different chronically ill groups. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Background: The aim of this study was to systematically synthesise the global evidence on the prevalence of persistent symptoms in a general post COVID-19 population. Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted using multiple electronic databases (MEDLINE and The Cochrane Library, Scopus, CINAHL, and medRxiv) until January 2022. Studies with at least 100 people with confirmed or self-reported COVID-19 symptoms at ≥28 days following infection onset were included. Patient-reported outcome measures and clinical investigations were both assessed. Results were analysed descriptively, and meta-analyses were conducted to derive prevalence estimates. Proximal hypospadias surgery is impacted by a high complication rate. The goal of this work was to assess the overall composite complication rate, fistula rate and stenosis rate following proximal hypospadias surgery realized according to onlay urethroplasty, Duckett, Koyanagi and Bracka techniques. The databases MEDLINE, EMBASE, SCOPUS, Cochrane Library, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) and Sciencedirect were searched. Studies had to report data about the mean age of population, the average duration of patient follow-up and the number of procedures required for surgical treatment of primary and proximal hypospadias. Two independent including one urologist reviewers screened all the articles and selected the articles to be included. Overall composite complication rates were 32%, 34%, 49%, and 43%, for Onlay urethroplasty, Duckett's tubularized flaps urethroplasty, Koyanagi repair and Bracka 2 stages repair, respectively. Fistula rates were 13%, 18%, 21% and 23% respectively. The heterogeneity of complication rates reported in the different studies was not moderated by age, country, or patient's continent origin. The classifications of complications used in articles were disparate and make comparisons between techniques difficult. The report of post-surgical complications in the literature is often poorly coded and follow-up times were often too short. This meta-analysis attempts to determine to the extent possible, given the serious weaknesses in the hypospadias literature, plausible estimates of complication rates after skin flap urethroplasty. The patched onlay skin flap, the Duckett's tubularized skin flap technique, the Koyanagi's technique, and the Bracka's two-stage urethroplasty procedure lead to very high complication rates. The role of microbiological factors in the development of neurodegenerative diseases is attracting increasing attention, while the relationship remains debated. This study aimed to comprehensively summarize and evaluate the associations between microbiological factors and the risk of neurodegenerative disorders with an umbrella review. PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane library were used to search for papers from the earliest to March 2021 for identifying meta-analyses and systematic reviews that examined associations betweenmicrobiological factors and neurodegenerative diseases. AMSTAR2 tool was employed to evaluate the methodical quality of systematic reviews and meta-analyses. The effect size and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were recalculated with a random effect model after the overlap was recognized by the corrected covered area (CCA) method. The heterogeneity of each meta-analysis was measured by the I² statistic and 95% prediction interval (95% PI). Additionally, publication bias and the quality of evidence were evaluated for all 37 unique associations. Only 4 associations had above the medium level of evidence, and the rest associations presented a low level of evidence. Among them, helicobacter pylori (HP), infection, and bacteria are associated with Parkinson's disease (PD), and the other one verifies that periodontal disease is a risk factor for all types of dementia. Following the evidence of our study, eradication of HP and aggressive treatment of periodontitis are beneficial for the prevention of PD and dementia, respectively. This umbrella review provides comprehensive quality-grade evidence on the relationship between microbial factors and neurodegenerative disease. Regardless of much evidence linking microbial factors to neurodegenerative diseases, these associations are not necessarily causal, and the evidence level is generally low. This study aimed to investigate the effect of maternal smoking during pregnancy (MSDP) on the risk of bone fractures in the offspring through a systematic review and meta-analysis. The PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases were systematically searched for relevant articles published through July 2019. According to heterogeneity, the pooled risk ratio (RR) and odds ratio (OR) and their corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) were obtained using fixed or random effects models. The heterogeneity and quality of the included studies were assessed by the I-squared (I2) statistic and the Newcastle-Ottawa scale, respectively. Sensitivity analyses were performed to test the effect of MSDP misclassification on the results. The review of 842 search records yielded 5 studies including 8,746 mother-child pairs that were included in the meta-analysis. Pooling adjusted effect measures showed that MSDP was not associated with a later risk of bone fractures in the offspring (pooled RR, 1.15; 95% CI, 0.84–1.58; I2=66.8%; P=0.049). After the adjustment for misclassification, MSDP may be associated with a 27% increased risk of bone fracture (pooled OR, 1.27; 95% CI, 1.00–1.62; I2=0%; P=0.537). After the adjustment for misclassification, MSDP is associated with an increased risk of bone fractures among children whose mothers smoked during pregnancy.

Low back pain (LBP) is a common problem, but the efficacy of pharmacological therapies remains controversial. Therefore, we aimed to comprehensively evaluate and quantitatively rank various pharmacological therapies for patients with low back pain. Two meta-analyses were performed: an initial pair-wise meta-analysis, followed by network meta-analysis using a random-effects Bayesian model. We included randomized controlled trials comparing placebos, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, opioids, skeletal muscular relaxants, pregabalin (or gabapentin), and some drug combinations. The primary and secondary outcomes were pain intensity and physical function. Eighty-eight eligible trials with 21,377 patients were included. Here, we show that only skeletal muscle relaxants significantly decreased the pain intensity of acute (including subacute) low back pain. Several kinds of drugs significantly decreased the pain of chronic low back pain, but only opioids and cyclo-oxygenase 2-selective non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs effectively reduced pain and improved function. Pregabalin (or gabapentin) seemed to be an effective treatment to relieve pain, but it should be used with caution for low back pain.

Tribal population of India constitutes 8.6% of the total population. They traditionally lead diverse life style and their way of life is indigenous. They are more susceptible to undernutrition which is recognized as a prevalent health problem mainly because of their uncertainty of food supply, which has serious long term consequences for the child and adversely influences the development of the nation. The assessment of nutritional status is paramount importance because it impels to identify malnutrition which is a potential cause and or an aggravation of morbidity and mortality. This review was aimed to find out the overall nutritional status of tribal preschool children. It also seek the major socio-cultural causes which influence the nutritional status from bio-cultural perspectives form of existing literature among the tribal children in India in order to make foundation of new research. In the present review, 40 papers on nutritional status of tribal pre-school children published from January 1st 2000 to till date, have been identified and included for analysis. To analyze the data Meta analysis was done using MedCalc software. The Meta analysis revealed the average rate of prevalence of underweight, stunting and wasting among the preschool tribal children of India was 39.25%; 39.67% and 19.54%. Among the 40 different studies these rates vary among the different tribal groups of different States associated with their socio-economic status (10%), their cultures of food consumption (10%), maternal education (15%), child feeding practices (20%), dietary deficit during pregnancy (25%) and poor nutrition of the child (52%). Prevalence rate of under-nutrition and stunting is relatively high in comparison to WHO in India whereas, rate of wasting was lower in comparison to National level which reflect that immediate nutritional status was poor but chronic deficiency of nutrition was less. Background: Exergames are promising exercise tools for improving health. To the best of our knowledge, no systematic review has compared the effects of commercial exergames and conventional exercises on improving executive functions (EFs) in children and adolescents., Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of commercial exergames and conventional exercises on improving EFs in children and adolescents., Methods: Following the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines, 5 randomized controlled trial (RCT) databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, PsycINFO, and SPORTDiscus) were searched from their inception to July 7, 2022, to identify relevant RCTs. The Cochrane Collaboration tool was used to evaluate the risk of bias for each study. GRADE (Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation) was used to evaluate the overall quality of evidence., Results: In total, 8 RCTs including 435 children and adolescents were included in the analysis. Commercial exergames had no significant benefit on overall EFs compared to conventional exercises (Hedges g=1.464, 95% CI -0.352 to 3.280; P=.06). For core EFs, there was no evidence to suggest that commercial exergames are more beneficial for improving cognitive flexibility (g=0.906, 95% CI -0.274 to 2.086; P=.13), inhibitory control (g=1.323, 95% CI -0.398 to 3.044; P=.13), or working memory (g=2.420, 95% CI -1.199 to 6.038; P=.19) than conventional exercises. We rated the evidence for overall EFs, cognitive flexibility, inhibitory control, and working memory as being of very low quality due to inconsistency (large heterogeneity) and imprecision (low number of people). Additionally, no effects of the intervention were observed in the acute and chronic groups., Conclusions: We do not have strong evidence to support the benefit of commercial exergaming on EFs because we did not observe a Hedges g close to 0 with tight CIs. Lip-read speech suppresses and speeds up the auditory N1 and P2 peaks, but these effects are not always observed or reported. Here, the robustness of lip-read-induced N1/P2 suppression and facilitation in phonetically congruent audiovisual speech was assessed by analyzing peak values that were taken from published plots and individual data. To determine whether adhering to the additive model of AV integration (i.e., A+V ≠ AV, or AV−V ≠ A) is critical for correct characterization of lip-read-induced effects on the N1 and P2, auditory data was compared to AV and to AV−V. On average, the N1 and P2 were consistently suppressed and sped up by lip-read information, with no indication that AV integration effects were significantly modulated by whether or not V was subtracted from AV. To assess the possibility that variability in observed N1/P2 amplitudes and latencies may explain why N1/P2 suppression and facilitation are not always found, additional correlations between peak values and size of the AV integration effects were computed. These analyses showed that N1/P2 peak values correlated with the size of AV integration effects. However, it also became apparent that a portion of the AV integration effects was characterized by lip-read-induced peak enhancements and delays rather than suppressions and facilitations, which, for the individual data, seemed related to particularly small/early A-only peaks and large/late AV(−V) peaks. Background: Digital strategies are innovative approaches to the prevention of skin cancer, but the attrition following this kind of intervention needs to be analyzed. Objective: The aim of this paper is to assess the dropouts from studies focused on digital strategies for the prevention of skin cancer. Methods: We conducted this systematic review with meta-analyses and metaregression according to the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) statements. Search terms for skin cancer, digital strategies, and prevention were combined to search PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL, and Cochrane Library from inception until July 2022. Randomized clinical trials that reported dropouts of participants and compared digital strategies with other interventions to prevent skin cancer in healthy or disease-free participants were included. Two independent reviewers extracted data for analysis. The Revised Cochrane Collaboration Bias tool was employed. We calculated the pooled dropout rate of participants through a meta-analysis of proportions and examined whether dropout was more or less frequent in digital interventions against comparators via an odds ratio (OR) meta-analysis. Data were pooled using a random-effects model. Subgroup meta-analyses were conducted in a meta-analysis of proportions and OR meta-analysis to assess the dropout events when data were sorted by digital interventions or control comparator. A univariate metaregression based on a random-effects model assessed possible moderators of dropout. Participants' dropout rates as pooled proportions were calculated for all groups combined, and the digital and comparator groups separately. OR>1 indicated higher dropouts for digital-based interventions. Metaregressions were performed for age, sex, length of intervention, and sample size. Results: A total of 17 studies were included. The overall pooled dropout rate was 9.5% (95% CI 5.0-17.5). The subgroup meta-analysis of proportions revealed a dropout rate of 11.6% for digital strategies (95% CI 6.8-19.0) and 10.0% for comparators (95% CI 5.5-17.7). A trend of higher dropout rates for digital strategies was observed in the overall (OR 1.16, 95% CI 0.98-1.36) and subgroup OR meta-analysis, but no significant differences were found between the groups. None of the covariates moderated the effect size in the univariate metaregression. Conclusions: Digital strategies had a higher dropout rate compared to other prevention interventions, but the difference was not significant. Standardization is needed regarding reporting the number of and reasons for dropouts. A concern with Bt-transgenic insect-resistant plants is their potential to harm non-target organisms. Early studies reported that Cry1Ab-producing Bt maize and purified Cry1Ab harmed larvae of the green lacewing, Chrysoperla carnea. Although these effects could not be confirmed in subsequent studies, some authors still refer to them as evidence that Bt maize harms beneficial species. We provide a comprehensive review of the studies evaluating the effects of Bt (Cry1Ab) maize on C. carnea. The evidence indicates that this important predator is not affected by Bt maize or by the produced Cry1Ab protein. We discuss how conceptual models can assist environmental risk assessments, and we emphasize the importance of robust and reproducible studies.

Background: Women often experience many unique health issues and conditions throughout their working lives. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a system of interrelated digital devices that can enable data exchanges over a network without human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction. The usage of applications and IoT in improving women's health has recently increased worldwide. However, there has been no consensus on the effectiveness of IoT in improving women's health outcomes., Objective: This systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) aims to assess and synthesize the role of apps and the IoT in improving women's health and to identify the ranking of interventions for ensuring better results for each stated outcome., Methods: Our systematic review and NMA will be conducted in accordance with the guidelines of the Cochrane Handbook. We will comprehensively search the following electronic databases: PubMed (including MEDLINE), Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Embase, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (ie, CINAHL), PsycINFO, ClinicalTrials.gov, and the World Health Organization International Clinical Trials Registry, along with other resources to identify relevant randomized controlled trials that have assessed the effects of various apps and the IoT with regard to improving working-aged women's health in high-income countries. We will segment and analyze the results of the included studies based on age categories (women undergoing a preconception period, those undergoing gestational and postpartum periods, and menopausal and pre- and postmenopausal women) and the medical history (women who have a specific medical condition-eg, cancer or diabetes-and women who do not have them) separately. Two independent reviewers will perform the study selection, data extraction, and quality assessment. Our primary outcomes include health status, well-being, and quality of life. We will perform pairwise meta-analysis and NMA to estimate the direct, indirect, and relative effects of apps and the IoT on women's health outcomes. We will also assess the hierarchy of interventions, statistical inconsistencies, and certainties of evidence for each outcome., Results: We plan to conduct the search in January 2023 and are currently discussing search strategies with the literature search specialists. The final report is planned for submission to a peer-reviewed journal in September 2023., Conclusions: To the best of our knowledge, this review will be the first to identify the ranking of IoT intervention for ensuring working-aged women's health outcomes. Dystonia is characterized by sustained or intermittent muscle contractions causing abnormal, often repetitive, movements or postures. Functional neuroimaging studies have yielded abnormal task-related sensorimotor activation in dystonia, but the results appear to be rather variable across studies. Further, study size was usually small including different types of dystonia. Here we performed an activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis of functional neuroimaging studies in patients with primary dystonia to test for convergence of dystonia-related alterations in task-related activity across studies. Activation likelihood estimates were based on previously reported regional maxima of task-related increases or decreases in dystonia patients compared to healthy controls. The meta-analyses encompassed data from 179 patients with dystonia reported in 18 functional neuroimaging studies using a range of sensorimotor tasks. Patients with dystonia showed bilateral increases in task-related activation in the parietal operculum and ventral postcentral gyrus as well as right middle temporal gyrus. Decreases in task-related activation converged in left supplementary motor area and left postcentral gyrus, right superior temporal gyrus and dorsal midbrain. Apart from the midbrain cluster, all between-group differences in task-related activity were retrieved in a sub-analysis including only the 14 studies on patients with focal dystonia. For focal dystonia, an additional cluster of increased sensorimotor activation emerged in the caudal cingulate motor zone. The results show that dystonia is consistently associated with abnormal somatosensory processing in the primary and secondary somatosensory cortex along with abnormal sensorimotor activation of mesial premotor and right lateral temporal cortex. Approximately 20 years ago O’Donohue and Elliott (1992) reviewed the treatment outcome literature for sexually abused children and evaluated each study on several criteria (e.g., adequacy of the description of therapy, subjects, and research design; assessment of clinical significance and social validity; inclusion of follow-up assessment to establish the durability of treatment effects etc.). At that time they were only able to identify 11 treatment outcome studies. Currently, a similar search has yielded several hundred outcome studies related to the treatment of child sexual abuse, several reviews of the literature, and seven relevant meta-analyses, clearly indicating a proliferation of much needed outcome research. In this paper we critically reviewed the seven meta-analyses and noted that different criteria for inclusion were used and some cases quite different conclusions were drawn. There are lively discussions in professional circles around the world regarding the definition of hypnosis. In the past hypnosis had a poor reputation as a controversial therapeutic method, but nowadays there is an increasing weight of empirically validated evidence that hypnosis can be effective in helping various physical and mental disorders. This article presents an overview of the results of two world renowned organisations. Further, 12 meta-studies are discussed that are the results of empirical research findings. The article also presents a short history of therapeutic hypnosis, and the history, developments and medical perspective of hypnosis, hypnotherapy and hypnopsychotherapy in Slovenia. Summary: Experimental studies show that, following hypoxic ischaemic injury, mild induced hypothermia—a reduction of body temperature by about 3°C—preserves cerebral energy metabolism, reduces cerebral tissue injury and improves neurological function. Randomized trials in full-term and near-full-term newborns suggest that treatment with mild hypothermia is safe and improves survival without disabilities up to 18months of age. Although the optimal time of initiation, the depth and duration, and the method of cooling are uncertain, in the absence of specific treatments many clinicians will wish to consider treating asphyxiated infants with hypothermia. Guidance now needs to be provided to promote uniform practice, to avoid inappropriate treatment and to foster continuing collaboration in future studies of neuroprotection following asphyxia. If the promising results of the current trials are confirmed by the findings from other on-going studies, with longer follow-up, the impact of such a treatment on the babies, their families and health resources in the shorter and longer terms will be considerable.
