9. A Holocene alpine seismic chronicle from Lake Aiguebelette (NW French Alps).

Abstract

Lake sediments are valuable archives and can help construct a chronology of event deposits induced by seismic events. Such a chronology can be used to better understand the recurrence times between seismic events over longer periods than those covered by historical seismicity catalogs. However, only a few studies in lake palaeoseismology have focused on areas with moderate seismicity. This study aims to improve the catalog of paleoseismological archives in the front of the Western Alps. In this part, new multi-proxy data from the sedimentary archives of Lake Aiguebelette (France) allow the identification of 32 homogenites (thickness ≥ 0.5 cm) interpreted as of coseismic origin over the Holocene. An age model based on short-lived radionuclides, paleomagnetic data and radiocarbon ages constrains the chronology of sedimentary deposits in the deep basin of Lake Aiguebelette. Among these homogenites, several were deposited at time intervals compatible with historical seismic events. To correlate the historical seismic events likely to have generated the event deposits identified in the sedimentary sequences of the deep basin of Lake Aiguebelette, the Earthquake Sensitivity Threshold Index (ESTI) method is used. Historical seismicity catalogs with uncertainties about intensities and epicenter coordinates for earthquakes make correlations to event deposits difficult. To better understand which seismic events may have been archived, a relative comparison was conducted between the pseudospectral acceleration (PSA) values calculated for each event in the FCAT-17 seismic catalog and for two distinct frequencies. Based on this PSA approach, for higher frequencies (5 Hz), the contribution of nearby and moderate events is significantly stronger than that of strong and distant events in the lake sequence of Aiguebelette. Thus, the chronicle established based on the event deposits archived in Lake Aiguebelette sediment is interpreted as representative of local events (epicentral distance to the lake < 50 km). Recurrence intervals between the deposition of event layers do not follow a specific distribution (log-normal, Weibull, gamma or exponential) but might be a combination of several distributions. This suggests possible coexistence of several processes over the Holocene, impacting the evolution of the seismicity in this area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; In the French north-western Alps, several lakes of glacial origin, such as Aiguebelette and La Thuile, present some mass-transport deposits within their sedimentary sequences. These event layers can result from lake sediment destabilization eventually triggered by earthquakes. On Lake Aiguebelette, based on sedimentological, geochemical and magnetic analyses, and high-resolution seismic and bathymetric surveys a ca 1 m thick event layer was identified in the deepest lake basin and a synchronous ca 2 cm thick deposit in the shallow basin. Age-depth models based on radiocarbon ages reveal that both mass-transport deposits in Lake Aiguebelette occurred around the Younger Dryas - Early Holocene climatic transition (i.e. 11 700 cal bp) time range. In Lake La Thuile, located 30 km away, unique mass-transport deposits (translational slide type) were recorded at the same time range in sedimentary records. Additionally, high-resolution seismic profiles previously acquired in Lake Annecy and Lake Bourget support the hypothesis of significant mass-transport deposits occurring at the Younger Dryas - Early Holocene time range. These outcomes on four north-western peri-Alpine and Alpine lakes highlight the regional occurrence of mass-transport deposits in the Younger Dryas - Early Holocene time range. Seismic and rockfall events are discussed as potential sources of these significant and similarly aged mass-transport deposits. Based on this study and a literature review, the authors suggest that mechanisms induced by rapid climate change and glacial retreat, such as crustal rebound and erosional unloading, could favour the triggering of earthquakes and rockfall events. In the case of mass-transport deposits archived in north-western Alpine lakes during this time period, this study favours the hypothesis of increased seismicity as the primary source driving process involved.

Abstract

International audience; Most of the world’s mountain glaciers have been retreating for more than a century in response to climate change. Glacier retreat is evident on all continents, and the rate of retreat has accelerated during recent decades. Accurate, spatially explicit information on the position of glacier margins over time is useful for analyzing patterns of glacier retreat and measuring reductions in glacier surface area. This information is also essential for evaluating how mountain ecosystems are evolving due to climate warming and the attendant glacier retreat. Here, we present a non-comprehensive spatially explicit dataset showing multiple positions of glacier fronts since the Little Ice Age (LIA) maxima, including many data from the pre-satellite era. The dataset is based on multiple historical archival records including topographical maps; repeated photographs, paintings, and aerial or satellite images with a supplement of geochronology; and own field data. We provide ESRI shapefiles showing 728 past positions of 94 glacier fronts from all continents, except Antarctica, covering the period between the Little Ice Age maxima and the present. On average, the time series span the past 190 years. From 2 to 46 past positions per glacier are depicted (on average: 7.8)

Abstract

Since the last glacial maximum, soil formation related to ice‐cover shrinkage has been one major sink of carbon accumulating as soil organic matter (SOM), a phenomenon accelerated by the ongoing global warming. In recently deglacierized forelands, processes of SOM accumulation, including those that control carbon and nitrogen sequestration rates and biogeochemical stability of newly sequestered carbon, remain poorly understood. Here, we investigate the build‐up of SOM during the initial stages (up to 410 years) of topsoil development in 10 glacier forelands distributed on four continents. We test whether the net accumulation of SOM on glacier forelands (i) depends on the time since deglacierization and local climatic conditions (temperature and precipitation); (ii) is accompanied by a decrease in its stability and (iii) is mostly due to an increasing contribution of organic matter from plant origin. We measured total SOM concentration (carbon, nitrogen), its relative hydrogen/oxygen enrichment, stable isotopic (13C, 15N) and carbon functional groups (C‐H, C=O, C=C) compositions, and its distribution in carbon pools of different thermal stability. We show that SOM content increases with time and is faster on forelands experiencing warmer climates. The build‐up of SOM pools shows consistent trends across the studied soil chronosequences. During the first decades of soil development, the low amount of SOM is dominated by a thermally stable carbon pool with a small and highly thermolabile pool. The stability of SOM decreases with soil age at all sites, indicating that SOM storage is dominated by the accumulation of labile SOM during the first centuries of soil development, and suggesting plant carbon inputs to soil (SOM depleted in nitrogen, enriched in hydrogen and in aromatic carbon). Our findings highlight the potential vulnerability of SOM stocks from proglacial areas to decomposition and suggest that their durability largely depends on the relative contribution of carbon inputs from plants., In glacier forelands all over the world, the organic matter build‐up during the initial stages of topsoil development is strongly modulated by climate: a warmer climate accelerates accumulation of organic matter. We also detected a decreasing thermal stability of soil organic matter along the chronosequences. The observed changes in soil organic matter elemental stoichiometry, aromaticity and stable isotope signature with soil organic matter accumulation suggest an increasing contribution of organic matter from plant origin during the first centuries of topsoil development.

The use of lake sedimentary DNA to track the long-term changes in both terrestrial and aquatic biota is a rapidly advancing field in paleoecological research. Although largely applied nowadays, knowledge gaps remain in this field and there is therefore still research to be conducted to ensure the reliability of the sedimentary DNA signal. Building on the most recent literature and seven original case studies, we synthesize the state-of-the-art analytical procedures for effective sampling, extraction, amplification, quantification and/or generation of DNA inventories from sedimentary ancient DNA (sedaDNA) via high-throughput sequencing technologies. Abstract

This paper presents the results of archaeobotanical studies carried out on the Late Mesolithic layer at Melnychna-Krucha (6460–6100 cal BC) and the Linearbandkeramik (LBK) site of Kamyane-Zavallia (5295–4960 cal BC), close to the Southern Bug River. Despite the relatively modest dataset presented in this paper, these preliminary results provide new data for a region where the environmental setting and the uses of plant resources during the Early Atlantic period are poorly understood. The main taxa used for firewood are quite similar at Melnychna-Krucha and Kamyane-Zavallia, although they were occupied 1000 years apart. Fraxinus (ash) and Quercus (oak) dominate both charcoal assemblages. These taxa, as well as Ulmus (elm), could have grown together in the alluvial deciduous forest, probably on the Southern Bug riverbank, close to both sites. Carpinus (hornbean) was present but probably still not abundant around Kamyane-Zavallia at the end of the 6th millennium. Macroremains and phytoliths demonstrate that the plant production economy (cultivation, cereal processing) was well developed and very similar to other European LBK sites. At Melnychna-Krucha, plant macro- and microremains did not indicate a productive subsistence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Cet article vise à présenter le contexte, les approches méthodologiques et les résultats d'un projet de recherche, nommé ORIMIL et financé par l'Agence Nationale pour la Recherche (ANR). Une approche intégrée multi-paramètres, en collaboration avec le Musée des Confluences de Lyon, a été élaborée pour déterminer si la région du Caucase (Arménie, Azerbaïdjan, Géorgie et sud de la Russie) a été, à l'instar de la Chine au Néolithique, un foyer de domestication et d'expansion du millet. Les résultats des études anthropologique, archéozoologique, archéobotanique, géomorphologique et de la biogéochimie isotopique réfutent la présence d'un ancien foyer de domestication du millet au Néolithique tout comme au début de l'âge du Bronze. Les données isotopiques, associées aux datations radiocarbone des humains, montrent que le millet était consommé par les animaux et les humains au plus tôt vers la fin de l'âge du Bronze moyen (1621-1450 cal BC) en Géorgie. Ces résultats s'accordent (1) avec les nombreuses datations radiocarbone réalisées directement sur les graines de millet carbonisées et (2) les études géomorphologiques montrant une meilleure qualité du sol et une augmentation des superficies cultivables dans la vallée du Kura du Néolithique à l'âge du Bronze.

Abstract

L’effet de l’oxydation sur la préservation des grains de pollen est testé avec un protocole expérimental de laboratoire. Une sélection de taxons polliniques est soumise à des conditions oxydantes en variant l’intensité et la durée d’exposition. L’évolution des concentrations polliniques entre la situation initiale et finale reflète la perte d’information entre la pluie pollinique originelle et le spectre finalement enregistré. Les variations de la concentration sont paramétrées pour tester l’impact de ce processus taphonomique sur des spectres polliniques théoriques. Le modèle néotaphonomique apporte des nouveaux éléments de discussion de taphonomie pollinique pour valider et interpréter des spectres archéopalynologiques. En contexte archéologique, l’hypothèse de processus taphonomiques intenses menant à la conservation différentielle des taxons polliniques est fréquemment évoquée. Il est montré que l’oxydation, qui affecte fortement l’ensemble des grains de pollen, n’est pas le seul processus permettant d’expliquer la conservation différentielle.

Abstract

International audience; This paper is the state of the art of charcoal signal studies (macro-, meso- and micro-charcoal) that have been carried out at the Epigravettian settlement of Mezhyrich. This work took part of the French ANR project “Mammouths”. Charcoal signals have been found in both natural and archaeological (pits and activity areas) deposits that have been sampled during the 2007–2008 archaeological excavations. This study aims at discussing the natural versus anthropic causes of those charcoal signals. Microscopic charcoal have been observed and quantified from loess sediments; they are probably the consequence of regional fire regimes. Charcoal signals found in archaeological layers would be mainly caused by human activities. The major charcoal signal is observed within the microscopic part of the archaeological sediments and thereby underlines the intensity of taphonomic processes. The identification of wood charcoal shows that birch and willow were located along the riverbanks, which provides further discussion of prehistoric fuel management in Pleniglacial context.; Cet article dresse un bilan des analyses du signal charbon (macro-, méso- et micro-charbons) menées sur le site épigravettien de Mezhyrich dans le cadre du projet ANR « Mammouths – La disparition de la steppe à mammouths – relations hommes/environnements à la fin du Pléniglaciaire en Europe orientale ». Les signaux charbons ont été mis en évidence au sein des dépôts sédimentaires naturels et archéologiques (fosses et aires d’activités), prélevés au cours des fouilles effectuées en 2007 et 2008. L’objectif majeur de cet article est de discuter l’origine naturelle et/ou anthropique de ces signaux. Les signaux micro-charbons enregistrés dans la séquence lœssique pourraient refléter un bruit de fond lié à la dynamique des feux régionaux. En revanche, le signal charbon enregistré dans les sédiments archéologiques serait directement lié aux activités des populations épigravettiennes. La présence de charbons de bois et de particules végétales brûlées, essentiellement dans la fraction microscopique des sédiments archéologiques, souligne l’intensité des processus taphonomiques. L’identification de macro-charbons de bouleau et de saule souligne notamment la proximité d’une ripisylve bordant les cours d’eau et permet d’aborder les modes de collecte en bois des hommes préhistoriques au cours du Pléniglaciaire.
