Background: Exposure to asbestos in the workplace is currently recognized as one of the leading causes of work-related deaths, with more than half of deaths attributable to cancer., Aims: The aim of this systematic literature review was to investigate the mental health and psychological distress of patients affected by asbestos-related diseases and their caregivers., Methods: The review was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. The studies were identified in October 2023 by searching four electronic databases: Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed and PsycInfo/PsycArtcicles. Risk of bias was assessed using the JBI checklist., Results: Fourteen articles were identified. The studies focused exclusively on the psychological distress of patients with malignant mesothelioma (MM) and their caregivers. MM appears to have traumatic effects on both patients and caregivers, who may experience anxiety and depression, an impoverished emotional life, somatization, social withdrawal, and a deterioration in their quality of life. In addition, a need for information about MM, its progression and associated care tasks was identified, and patients and caregivers reported frequently seeking information from online sources., Conclusions: Our review has shown that there are still few studies addressing psychological distress in MM patients and their caregivers, and none addressing distress in the context of other asbestos-related diseases. The somatopsychic consequences of MM in patients and caregivers should encourage institutions and health professionals to develop assessment and intervention models that are tailored to the specific suffering and needs of MM patients and their caregivers and promote their residual vitality., (© 2025 The Author(s). Background: Mesothelioma is a cancer of growing global incidence, especially in developing countries, with unique complex psychosocial impacts on patients and their carers., Aims: To provide a comprehensive understanding of the psychosocial needs of people living with pleural mesothelioma and family carers., Methods: A mixed methods design with 61 semi-structured interviews and psychometrically validated questionnaires to assess pleural mesothelioma patients' (n = 36) quality of life and frailty and carers' (n = 25) caregiving experiences, quality of life, and pre-loss prolonged grief symptoms., Results: People with mesothelioma (29 men, 7 women, aged 46-89 years) indicated moderate quality of life; 18 (50%) met criteria for frailty. Current carers (21 women, 4 men; aged 41-79 years) generally reported positive caregiving experiences and high quality of life; 5 (20%) scored in the range indicative of risk for prolonged grief disorder. Four themes were generated: a desire for tailored information with bespoke detail, assistance to coordinate tasks of treatment, improved social and peer support, and effective psychological services. Needs varied, with main concerns being about breaking the news to spouses/children, the impact of the disease and death on family, loss of personal future, managing psychological symptoms, and avoiding burden., Conclusions: These specific and unmet psychosocial needs provide a strong basis for individualised care pathways to address these needs via the integration of psychology into the multidisciplinary care team and the development and evaluation of mental health and wellbeing interventions for mesothelioma patients and carers. Malignant Mesothelioma (MM) has a striking impact on the somatopsychic balance of patients and their families, including physical, psychological, and interpersonal problems. The aim of this systematic literature review was to investigate what psychological interventions are offered to patients with MM and their caregivers worldwide., Methods: The review was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. The literature search led to the identification of 12 articles. Results were categorized into five categories. 1. Individual psychological support, 2. Group psychological support, 3. Cognitive-behavioral group psychotherapy, 4. Brief psychoanalytic groups, 5. Multifamily group., Results: The interventions differed in terms of form, duration and resources used. Most of them were group-based and psychoanalytically oriented, although individual and cognitive-behavioral interventions were also described. Despite the differences, the interventions appeared to be fundamental in facilitating the processing of mental pain and anger related to the diagnosis., Conclusion: Our study has shown that there are still few psychological interventions available for MM patients and their caregivers. Background: Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare and usually fatal malignancy frequently linked to occupational asbestos exposures and associated with poor prognosis and considerable humanistic burden. The study aimed to develop conceptual models of the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) impact on patients with and receiving treatment for MPM, and the burden on their caregivers., Methods: This multi-country study (Australia and United Kingdom) adopted a qualitative methodology to conduct semi-structured, independent interviews with people with MPM (n = 26), current caregivers (n = 20), and caregivers of people who had recently died because of MPM (n = 4). Participants were recruited using a purposive sampling approach and interviews conducted via telephone between January 2021 and January 2022. Transcripts were analysed using thematic analysis and used to construct conceptual models., Results: Patient analysis yielded four overarching themes: (1) debilitating burden of breathlessness and fatigue; (2) physical mesothelioma symptoms experienced by patients; (3) distress of MPM on the self and family; and (4) treatment is worth 'having a go' despite the potential impact on symptoms. Caregiver analysis yielded five core themes: (1) daily life limited by caregiving duties; (2) emotional well-being and the need for support; (3) the relational role shift to caregiver; (4) time spent providing care negatively impacts work and productivity; and (5) positive aspects and outcomes of caregiving., Conclusions: This study highlights the substantial daily and emotional HRQoL impact that MPM symptoms have on patients and caregivers. Both groups reduced work, productivity, and social and leisure activities. There was evidence of positive HRQoL impacts as a result of immunotherapy and radiotherapy, but less for chemotherapy. Caregiver impacts were intensified during the end-of-life period and persisted following patient death. Objective: Psychological suffering in patients with Malignant Mesothelioma (MM) is different from the one experienced by patients with other cancers due to its occupational or environmental etiology and its peculiar symptomatology and prognosis (i.e., poor prognosis, reduced effectiveness of the therapies, poor quality of residual life, and advanced age at the time of diagnosis). Therefore, the Mesothelioma Psychological Distress Tool-Patients (MPDT-P) has been developed to evaluate the specific profile of psychological suffering in this population. This paper describes the item selection, factor analysis, and psychometric evaluation of the revised MPDT-P., Methods: The analyses of the current work aimed to confirm the factorial structure found in the first version of the MPDT-P. In the case of nonfit, it aimed to find an alternative structure and causes of nonfit in the model. The search for the fit of the factorial model was conducted using a Bayesian approach., Results: The two-factor model reported in the first version of the instrument did not fit the data. Confirmatory Bayesian analyses showed adequate fit for the three-factor solution. Based on the content of the items, we labeled the factors as dysfunctional emotions, claims for justice, and anxieties about the future., Conclusions: Integrating the MPDT-P into clinical practice could help clinicians gain insight into the specific suffering related to MM and investigate potential differences related to different occupational and environmental exposure contexts., (© 2024 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Background: Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare but deadly cancer. Although there is an emerging picture of the individual MPM experience, the United States is underrepresented in this literature. With the United States contributing more deaths from MPM than any other country, findings from this study will enhance a global body of literature on the lived experience of this devastating cancer., Objective: The aims of this descriptive phenomenological research study were to explore the lived experience of MPM in the United States and identify unmet patient needs., Interventions/methods: This was a descriptive phenomenology study employing semi-structured individual interviews with persons with MPM., Results: A total of 7 persons with MPM from a large northeastern US medical center participated. Three major themes about the MPM lived experience emerged: (1) uncertainty/worry about the future, (2) value in relationships, and (3) adapting to a new norm., Conclusions: Findings from this study are consistent with other MPM research, noting a high symptom burden, lifestyle changes, and feelings of uncertainty about the future. However, participants also expressed feelings of hope and optimism. Particularly salient to the MPM experience was the role of communication with the healthcare team as well as other persons with MPM., Implications for Practice: Timely, coordinated, and personalized care as well as skilled communication should be the cornerstone of care for persons with MPM. Objective: Despite recent advances in research, malignant mesothelioma remains an incurable and devastating disease, typically bringing shock and emotional distress to patients and carers. Little research has addressed the psychological impact on either group. This scoping review examines the current state of evidence on the psychological effects of mesothelioma on patients and carers, and identifies areas for further research., Methods: We searched PubMed, PsychINFO, CINAHL, the Cochrane Library and Web of Science for English-language peer-reviewed research articles published 1981 to 2019 reporting studies focussing on the psychological effects of mesothelioma on patients and carers. Following data extraction and quality appraisal, reflexive thematic analysis was used to identify themes., Results: Seventeen articles met the inclusion criteria. Carers' experiences were generally amalgamated with patients'. Three themes were developed. The Passing of Time included the importance of timing of interventions; delays in the medical journey; awareness of different time-phases in mesothelioma; and uncertainty/certainty. Dealing with Difficult Feelings reflected ubiquitous negative emotions, feelings about identity and states of being and associated coping strategies. Craving Good Communication covered issues related to sharing of information and to positive/negative aspects of communication., Conclusions: Though limited, the evidence indicates that mesothelioma, with its high symptom-burden, incurability, rarity and asbestos-related causation, leads to complex and inter-relating psychological effects on patients and carers. These effects are both negative and positive. The sparse literature gives a partial picture and demonstrates an urgent need for more nuanced research.
