The authors analyze the mesoscale structure accompanying two multiday periods of heavy rainfall during the Southwest Monsoon Experiment and the Terrain-Induced Mesoscale Rainfall Experiment conducted over and near Taiwan during May and June 2008. Each period is about 5-6 days long with episodic heavy rainfall events within. These events are shown to correspond primarily to periods when well-defined frontal boundaries are established near the coast. The boundaries are typically 1 km deep or less and feature contrasts of virtual temperature of only 2°-3°C. Yet, owing to the extremely moist condition of the upstream conditionally unstable air, these boundaries appear to exert a profound influence on convection initiation or intensification near the coast. Furthermore, the boundaries, once established, are long lived, possibly reinforced through cool downdrafts and prolonged by the absence of diurnal heating over land in generally cloudy conditions. Abstract: Surface distributions of nutrients and phytoplankton were investigated in the vicinity of the subtropical South Pacific islands by using a continuous underway system with a highly sensitive nutrient analysis. A total of 17 transects, whose lengths ranged between 42 and 271km, were sampled for continuous nutrient measurements. The study area was characterized by an overall depletion of nitrate+nitrite (<15nM), but phosphate varied from 7 to 192nM. The transects were grouped into 4 patterns according to distribution of phosphate concentrations. In 7 transects, a mesoscale decrease in phosphate occurred, coinciding with an elevation of in vivo chlorophyll fluorescence, which was accompanied by an increase in phytoplankton abundance as revealed by microscopy, flow cytometry, and accessory pigments. This mirror–image relationship between the phosphate concentration and phytoplankton abundance was most apparent on both a 99-km transect east of Tonga, where the phosphate concentration ranged from 17 to 125nM, and on a 98-km transect west of Fiji, where the phosphate concentration ranged from 23 to 136nM. Both these transects contained distinct blooms of Trichodesmium in areas with the lowest concentrations of phosphate. In other 2 transects, fluctuations in phosphate concentrations showed no distinct relationship with chlorophyll fluorescence. Other patterns that emerged included consistently high concentrations, ranging from 109 to 192nM, in 5 transects and consistently low phosphate concentrations, ranging from 7 to 50nM, in 3 transects. Abundance of Trichodesmium, Prochlorococcus, Synechococcus, and all accessory pigments examined tended to be higher in the low phosphate transects than in the high phosphate ones. In particular, Trichodesmium occurred in low phosphate water (<25nM). There was no significant relationship between phosphate concentrations and nanoplanktonic unicellular cyanobacteria. Our observations suggest that surface phosphate decreases are associated with phytoplankton utilization of phosphate, and that nitrogen supply from Trichodesmium may contributes to this utilization. During the TROCCINOX field experiments in February-March 2004 and February 2005, airborne in situ measurements of NO, NOy, CO, and O3 mixing ratios and the J(NO2) photolysis rate were carried out in the anvil outflow of thunderstorms over southern Brazil. Both tropical and subtropical thunderstorms were investigated, depending on the location of the South Atlantic convergence zone. Tropical air masses were discriminated from subtropical ones according to the higher equivalent potential temperature (Θe) in the lower and mid troposphere, the higher CO mixing ratio in the mid troposphere, and the lower wind velocity in the upper troposphere within the Bolivian High (north of the subtropical jet stream). During thunderstorm anvil penetrations, typically at 20-40 km horizontal scales, NOx mixing ratios were distinctly enhanced and the absolute mixing ratios varied between 0.2-1.6 nmol mol-1 on average. This enhancement was mainly attributed to NOx production by lightning and partly due to upward transport from the NOx-richer boundary layer. In addition, CO mixing ratios were occasionally enhanced, indicating upward transport from the boundary layer. For the first time, the composition of the anvil outflow from a large, long-lived mesoscale convective system (MCS) advected from northern Argentina and Uruguay was investigated in more detail. Over a horizontal scale of about 400 km, NOx, CO and O3 absolute mixing ratios were significantly enhanced in these air masses in the range of 0.6-1.1, 110-140 and 60-70 nmol mol-1, respectively. Analyses from trace gas correlations and a Lagrangian particle dispersion model indicate that polluted air masses, probably from the Buenos Aires urban area and from biomass burning regions, were uplifted by the MCS. Ozone was distinctly enhanced in the aged MCS outflow, due to photochemical production and entrainment of O3-rich air masses from the upper troposphere - lower stratosphere region. The aged MCS outflow was transported to the north, ascended and circulated, driven by the Bolivian High over the Amazon basin. In light of the recent high-resolution radar data of surface velocity, which have revealed submesoscale eddies between the Florida Current and the coast, an objective method of detecting eddies and estimating their parameters such as center coordinates, size, and intensity is suggested. The obtained statistics are used to parametrically represent the birth–death process of eddies filling up the observation area via a model stochastic velocity field known as Çinlar flow. It appears that the suggested approach leads to a reasonable parameterization of this process for potential future use in OGCMs or coastal models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, the fifth-generation Pennsylvania State University–National Center for Atmospheric Research (PSU–NCAR) Mesoscale Model (MM5) was used to simulate Supertyphoon Bilis (in 2000) and Typhoon Toraji (in 2001) in order to investigate the dynamics of track deflection caused by the Central Mountain Range (CMR) of Taiwan. The MM5 predicted the track of each storm reasonably well. Bilis was stronger and had a relatively faster forward motion, which helped make the track continuous as it crossed the CMR. The use of a “bogus” vortex in the initialization process helped produce a storm closer to the observed strength. Bilis is a classic example of a typhoon crossing Taiwan with a continuous track. For comparison, Typhoon Toraji, a typical typhoon having a discontinuous track, was also studied. Toraji was weaker and had a relatively slower forward speed, which prevented the original low center from crossing over the CMR and forced more air parcels to go around the northern tip of the CMR. As a result, it produced a vortex and a secondary low center on the lee. Potential vorticity banners on the north side of the CMR acted to organize the secondary low and the lee vortex. With time, the low-level circulation extended into the upper levels, completing the formation of the secondary center. Remnants of the initial center crossed over the CMR and were entrained into the secondary center. Nondimensional control parameters for track continuity and deflection from idealized studies are calculated for Bilis and Toraji. The results are consistent with the theory proposed in Lin et al. For tropical cyclones (TCs) approaching Taiwan from the southeast, the conceptual model proposed by Lin et al. for continuous and discontinuous tracks was applied. For continuous tracks over the CMR, the blocking effect on the outer circulation of the vortex is weak and the vorticity advection around the northern tip is strong due to an intense TC. Tropical cyclones form over the seas: a typical data‐sparse region for conventional observations. Therefore, satellites, especially with microwave sensors, are ideal for cyclone studies. The advanced microwave sounding unit (AMSU) , in addition to providing very valuable data over non‐precipitating cloudy regions, can provide very high horizontal resolution of the temperature and humidity soundings. Such high‐resolution microwave data can improve the poorly analysed cyclone. The objective of this study is to investigate the impact of ingesting and assimilating the AMSU data together with conventional upper air and surface meteorological observations over India on the prediction of a tropical cyclone which formed over the Arabian Sea during November 2003 using analysis nudging. The impact of assimilating the AMSU‐derived temperature and humidity vertical profiles in a mesoscale model has not been tested yet over the Indian region. Such studies are important as most weather systems over India form over the seas. The present study is unique in the sense that it addresses the impact of ingesting and assimilating microwave sounding data (together with conventional India Meteorological Department data) on the prediction of a tropical cyclone, which formed over the Arabian Sea during November 2003 using analysis nudging. Two sets of numerical experiments are designed in this study. While the first set utilizes the National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) reanalysis (for the initial and lateral boundary conditions) only in the fifth‐generation mesoscale model simulation, the second set utilized the AMSU satellite and conventional meteorological upper air and surface data to provide an improved analysis through analysis nudging. The results of the two sets of model simulations are compared with one another as well as with the NCEP reanalysis and the observations.The results of the study indicated that the impact of ingesting and assimilating microwave sounding data and the conventional meteorological data through nudging resulted in an improvement in the simulation of wind asymmetries and the warm temperature anomalies. The with‐assimilation run simulated stronger wind speeds and stronger vertical velocity motion as compared with the without‐assimilation run. The time series of the minimum sea level pressure (SLP) and maximum wind speed for the simulations with the microwave sounding data and conventional meteorological data show better agreement with the observations than the simulations without the assimilation. The central minimum pressure of the simulations with the modified analysis are lower by 7 hPa as compared with the simulations without the assimilations. Even though there is not much of a difference in the maximum wind speed between the two simulations at the initial forecast time, the results indicate that the simulations with microwave sounding data and conventional meteorological data reveal a marked (9 m/s) increase in the maximum wind speed over the simulations without the assimilation. While the lowest central pressure estimated from the satellite image is 988 hPa, the simulations with microwave sounding data and conventional meteorological data show a value of 999.5 hPa for the lowest central minimum pressure. One reason for the inability of the simulation with improved analysis to achieve the observed lowest SLP is that the NCEP reanalysis had manifested an extremely weak system in the first place and, despite assimilation with microwave sounding data and conventional meteorological data, only a moderate improvement in the lowest SLP could be achieved. A proper appreciation of the impact of the microwave sounding data can be obtained by comparing with the lowest SLP obtained from the simulation without assimilation which showed a value of 1007 hPa. The initial mis‐representation in the location of the centre of the cyclone in the NCEP reanalysis with respect to the observed location has led to marked errors in the track prediction of both the model simulations. The assimilation of microwave satellite data is yet to be implemented in the current operational regional model over India and hence the results of this study may be relevant to the operational tropical cyclone forecasting community. A composite mesoscale precipitation event and a convectively coupled Kelvin wave produced by a diabatically accelerated cloud resolving model are compared. Special emphasis is placed on the vertical structure of density and moisture perturbations and the interaction of these perturbations with the composited dynamical fields. Both composites share the same general features, a gradual deepening and strengthening of convection followed by deep convection and a stratiform region, quite similar in character to observations and some recent idealized models. Composited frozen moist static energy (FMSE) perturbations are several times larger than virtual temperature perturbations, suggesting moisture is a dominant regulator of convection. An empirically derived two vertical mode decomposition of the dynamical and moisture fields is found to reproduce both composites quite well. The leading vertical modes of FMSE and virtual temperature variability are strongly correlated with the modes of vertical velocity variability; these correlations are strongest at near-zero time lags. Deep convection is associated with moistening in the lower and middle troposphere, while shallow convection is associated with a moist lower troposphere and dry middle and upper troposphere. To the extent that our numerical model is realistic, the empirical modal decomposition provides support for the use of two-mode idealized models for convective interaction with large-scale circulations and guidance for formulating feedbacks between convection and the thermodynamic profile in such models. The FMSE budget leads to an interpretation of the convective life-cycle as a recharge–discharge mechanism in column-integrated FMSE. The budget analysis places diabatic forcing, surface and radiative fluxes into the moist energetic framework. In particular, these fluxes are seen to prolong active convection, but play a passive role in its initiation. The modally decomposed FMSE budget highlights the dynamical importance of the second baroclinic mode in moistening the lower and middle troposphere before convective onset (recharging), and then discharging stored FMSE in the stratiform region. A high-resolution tropical cyclone model with explicit cloud microphysics has been used to investigate the dynamics and energetics of tropical cyclone rainbands. Analysis of the vorticity interactions that occur within the simulated rainbands demonstrates that couplets of cyclonic–anticyclonic mesovortices can be produced in outer bands. The primary source of this vorticity is the upward tilting of system-generated horizontal vorticity by diabatic heating gradients. The vertical heating gradient in the stratiform cloud also creates a potential vorticity (PV) dipole that accelerates the tangential flow and develops a midlevel jet. The strength of the jet is enhanced by the vortex pair that is oriented radially across the rainband. The Fourier decomposition of the absolute vorticity field shows two counterpropagating vortex Rossby waves associated with the rainband. The wave located on the inner side of the band transports energy toward the vortex center. The outer wave is made up of high wavenumbers and uses the vorticity gradients generated by the rainband. The results support the hypothesis that the heating profile in the stratiform regions of rainbands generates cyclonic PV across the freezing level, which develops a midlevel jet. This mechanism creates a vorticity gradient that enables the propagation of vortex Rossby waves that could allow the rainbands to interact with the mean flow and potentially influence the evolution of the storm by contributing to the symmetric component of vorticity and the development of secondary eyewalls. The Fourier-ray method involves ray tracing in a Fourier-transform domain. The ray solutions are then Fourier synthesized to produce a spatial solution. Here previous steady-state developments of the Fourier-ray method are extended to include a transient source of mountain waves. The method is illustrated with an initial value problem in which the background flow is started abruptly from rest and then maintained at steady velocity. The resulting wave transience is modeled in a simple way. All rays that radiate from the mountain, including the initial rays, are assigned the full amplitude of the longtime steady-state solution. Time dependence comes in through the changing position of the initial rays. This is sufficient to account for wave transience in a test case, as demonstrated by comparison with simulations from a mesoscale numerical model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, the variation of adjoint sensitivities as horizontal and vertical resolutions are changed is investigated. The fifth-generation Pennsylvania State University–National Center for Atmospheric Research (PSU–NCAR) Mesoscale Model (MM5) and its adjoint are used with consistent physics to generate adjoint sensitivities over a 24-h period. The sensitivities are generated with respect to a response function defined as the lowest sigma level perturbation pressure over a region of northwestern Oregon. It is found that the scale, magnitude, and structure of sensitivity with respect to initial temperature varies significantly as grid spacing is decreased from 216 to 24 km. As found in other adjoint studies at relatively coarse resolution, low-level, upshear-tilted, subsynoptic-scale sensitivities were apparent, with the wavelike sensitivity pattern decreasing significantly in scale and spatial extent with increased horizontal resolution. It is also found that perturbation growth rates depend on horizontal resolution, with the adjoint sensitivities predicting larger changes in the response function with increased horizontal resolution. Relatively little change in sensitivity structure and growth rates occurred when the vertical resolution was varied from 10 to 50 vertical levels. It is shown that a majority of the predicted change in the response function comes from the very small proportion of the domain occupied by sensitive regions. Last, the accuracy of the tangent linear approximation is examined, and it is found that for perturbations made in sensitive regions, the tangent linear approximation degrades at finer grid spacing. The implications of these results are discussed for methodologies utilizing adjoint sensitivities, such as four-dimensional variational data assimilation and targeted observations strategies. Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Precipitation Radar (PR), TRMM Microwave Imager (TMI), and Visible and Infrared Scanner (VIRS) observations within the Precipitation Feature (PF) database have been analyzed to examine regional variability in rain area and maximum horizontal extent of rainfall features, and role of storm morphology on rainfall production (and thus modes where vertically integrated heating occurs). Particular attention is focused on the sampling geometry of the PR and the resulting impact on PF statistics across the global Tropics. It was found that 9% of rain features extend to the edge of the PR swath, with edge features contributing 42% of total rainfall. However, the area (maximum dimension) distribution of PR features is similar to the wider-swath TMI up until a truncation point of nearly 30 000 km2 (250 km), so a large portion of the feature size spectrum may be examined using the PR as with past ground-based studies. This study finds distinct differences in land and ocean storm morphology characteristics, which lead to important differences in rainfall modes regionally. A larger fraction of rainfall comes from more horizontally and vertically developed PFs over land than ocean due to the lack of shallow precipitation in both relative and absolute frequency of occurrence, with a trimodal distribution of rainfall contribution versus feature height observed over the ocean. Mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) are found to be responsible for up to 90% of rainfall in selected land regions. Tropicswide, MCSs are responsible for more than 50% of rainfall in almost all regions with average annual rainfall exceeding 3 mm day-1. Characteristic variability in the contribution of rainfall by feature type is shown over land and ocean, which suggests new approaches for improved convective parameterizations. Mesometeorological information obtained in several research projects in southern Europe has been used to analyze perceived changes in the western Mediterranean summer storm regime. A procedure was developed to disaggregate daily precipitation data into three main components: frontal precipitation, summer storms, and Mediterranean cyclogenesis. Working hypotheses were derived on the likely processes involved. The results indicate that the precipitation regime in this Mediterranean region is very sensitive to variations in surface airmass temperature and moisture. Land-use perturbations that accumulated over historical time and greatly accelerated in the last 30 yr may have induced changes from an open, monsoon-type regime with frequent summer storms over the mountains inland to one dominated by closed vertical recirculations where feedback mechanisms favor the loss of storms over the coastal mountains and additional heating of the sea surface temperature during summer. This, in turn, favors Mediterranean cyclogenesis and torrential rains in autumn–winter. Because these intense rains and floods can occur anywhere in the basin, perturbations to the hydrological cycle in any part of the basin can propagate to the whole basin and adjacent regions. Furthermore, present levels of air pollutants can produce greenhouse heating, amplifying the perturbations and pushing the system over critical threshold levels. A methodology and algorithms of spatial extrapolation of mesometeorological fields to a territory uncovered with observations are suggested. The atmospheric state and parameters are estimated using an extended Kalman filter for a simplified model of the space-time behavior of atmospheric parameters. The model is described by first-order stochastic differential equations. The results of statistical estimation of the quality of the algorithms used for spatial extrapolation of the mesoscale temperature and wind velocity fields are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new regional climate model (RCM) is presented in this paper and its performance is investigated through a pair of 60-day simulations. This new model is based on the dynamical formulation of the Cooperative Centre for Research in Mesometeorology (CCRM) mesoscale nonhydrostatic community model and on the complete subgrid-scale physical parameterization package of the second-generation Canadian Centre for Climate modeling and analysis General Circulation Model (CCCma GCMII). The main feature of the Canadian RCM (CRCM) comes from the very efficient semi-implicit and semi-Lagrangian (SISL) numerical scheme used for the integration of the fully elastic nonhydrostatic Euler equations. The efficiency of the SISL scheme allows the use of longer time steps (at least by a factor of 5) for the integration of this model (e.g., the 45-km resolution version of the model uses a 15-min time step). A complete description of the numerical formulation of the model is presented with a review of the principal characteristics of the physical package. A pair of two-month-long winter simulations is also analyzed to investigate the behavior of the model and to evaluate the potential of the SISL integration scheme in the context of regional climate simulation. The two integrations, produced with a 45-km resolution version of the model, developed realistic small-scale details from the low-resolution GCMII fields used to initialize and drive the RCM.
