We report the first measurement of the parity-violating elastic electron scattering asymmetry on 27Al. The 27Al elastic asymmetry is A_PV = 2.16 +- 0.11 (stat) +- 0.16 (syst) ppm, and was measured at =0.02357 +- 0.0001 GeV^2, = 7.61 +- 0.02 degrees, and = 1.157 GeV with the Qweak apparatus at Jefferson Lab. Predictions using a simple Born approximation as well as more sophisticated distorted-wave calculations are in good agreement with this result. From this asymmetry the 27Al neutron radius R_n = 2.89 +- 0.12 fm was determined using a many-models correlation technique. The corresponding neutron skin thickness R_n-R_p = -0.04 +- 0.12 fm is small, as expected for a light nucleus with a neutron excess of only 1. This result thus serves as a successful benchmark for electroweak determinations of neutron radii on heavier nuclei. A tree-level approach was used to extract the 27Al weak radius R_w = 3.00 +- 0.15 fm, and the weak skin thickness R_wk - R_ch = -0.04 +- 0.15 fm. The weak form factor at this Q^2 is F_wk = 0.39 +- 0.04., Comment: Revised version after referee's comments and suggestions. Scintillators with pulse-shape discrimination (PSD) capability are of great interest to many fields in the scientific community. The ability to discern a gamma ray from a neutron using PSD varies between different types of scintillator materials and dopants. A new generation of organic scintillator materials with PSD capability were studied to determine their radiation hardness to ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. The PSD capability, average pulse shapes, and light output of four types of organic scintillator were characterized before and after neutron and gamma-ray irradiation. The main goal of this investigation is to study the effects of long-term irradiation that may be experienced in space applications on the light output and particle discriminating capabilities of each material. EJ-270, EJ-276, organic glass, and Stilbene were tested. Damage due to non-ionizing (neutron) radiation was not observed in any of the scintillators up to $2.56\times10^{11}$ n/cm$^2$, except for Stilbene which showed a small (12$\%$) decrease in light output. All scintillators presented some light output reduction after ionizing (gamma-ray) irradiation, with reductions of 17$\%$ (EJ-276 and OGS), 32$\%$ (EJ-270), and 42$\%$ (Stilbene) observed immediately after 100 kRad.

The MUon Scattering Experiment, MUSE, at the Paul Scherrer Institute, Switzerland, investigates the proton charge radius puzzle, lepton universality, and two-photon exchange, via simultaneous measurements of elastic muon-proton and electron-proton scattering. The experiment uses the PiM1 secondary beam channel, which was designed for high precision pion scattering measurements. We review the properties of the beam line established for pions. We discuss the production processes that generate the electron and muon beams, and the simulations of these processes. Simulations of the $\pi$/$\mu$/$e$ beams through the channel using TURTLE and G4beamline are compared. The G4beamline simulation is then compared to several experimental measurements of the channel, including the momentum dispersion at the IFP and target, the shape of the beam spot at the target, and timing measurements that allow the beam momenta to be determined. We conclude that the PiM1 channel can be used for high precision $\pi$, $\mu$, and $e$ scattering., Comment: 20 pages, 18 figures

We report measurements of the parity-conserving beam-normal single-spin elastic scattering asymmetries $B_n$ on $^{12}$C and $^{27}$Al, obtained with an electron beam polarized transverse to its momentum direction. These measurements add an additional kinematic point to a series of previous measurements of $B_n$ on $^{12}$C and provide a first measurement on $^{27}$Al. The experiment utilized the Qweak apparatus at Jefferson Lab with a beam energy of 1.158 GeV. The average lab scattering angle for both targets was 7.7 degrees, and the average $Q^2$ for both targets was 0.02437 GeV$^2$ (Q=0.1561 GeV). The asymmetries are $B_n$ = -10.68 $\pm$ 0.90 stat) $\pm$ 0.57 (syst) ppm for $^{12}$C and $B_n$ = -12.16 $\pm$ 0.58 (stat) $\pm$ 0.62 (syst) ppm for $^{27}$Al. The results are consistent with theoretical predictions, and are compared to existing data. When scaled by Z/A, the Q-dependence of all the far-forward angle (theta < 10 degrees) data from $^{1}$H to $^{27}$Al can be described by the same slope out to $Q \approx 0.35$ GeV. We present new precision measurements of the elastic electron-proton scattering cross section for momentum transfer (Q$^2$) up to 15.75~\gevsq. Combined with existing data, these provide an improved extraction of the proton magnetic form factor at high Q$^2$ and double the range over which a longitudinal/transverse separation of the cross section can be performed. The difference between our results and polarization data agrees with that observed at lower Q$^2$ and attributed to hard two-photon exchange (TPE) effects, extending to 8~(GeV/c)$^2$ the range of Q$^2$ for which a discrepancy is established at $>$95\% confidence. We use the discrepancy to quantify the size of TPE contributions needed to explain the cross section at high Q$^2$., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

A beam-normal single-spin asymmetry generated in the scattering of transversely polarized electrons from unpolarized nucleons is an observable related to the imaginary part of the two-photon exchange process. We report a 2% precision measurement of the beam-normal single-spin asymmetry in elastic electron-proton scattering with a mean scattering angle of theta_lab = 7.9 degrees and a mean energy of 1.149 GeV. The asymmetry result is B_n = -5.194 +- 0.067 (stat) +- 0.082 (syst) ppm. This is the most precise measurement of this quantity available to date and therefore provides a stringent test of two-photon exchange models at far-forward scattering angles (theta_lab -> 0) where they should be most reliable., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures; Slightly revised version, after referee's comments; accepted in PRL

Tl$_2$LiYCl$_6$:Ce (TLYC) is a new dual-detection elpasolite scintillator that can detect and distinguish between gamma rays and neutrons using pulse-shape discrimination (PSD). It has a higher density and Z-number than the more mature and well-known elpasolite Cs$_2$LiYCl$_6$:Ce (CLYC), causing it to have a significantly better gamma-ray stopping power. These properties make TLYC an attractive alternative to CLYC for resource-constrained applications where size and weight are important, such as space or national security applications. Such applications may be subjected to a wide range of temperatures, and therefore TLYC's performance was characterized for the first time over a temperature range of -20$^{\circ}$C to +50$^{\circ}$C in 10$^{\circ}$C increments. TLYC's thermal response effects on light-output linearity with energy, gamma-ray photopeak energy resolution, detected neutron energy, pulse shapes, and figure of merit is analyzed and reported. The light output of TLYC was found to be linear with energy over the tested temperature range and was observed to decrease with increasing temperature. The decay time of the scintillation light output was observed to decrease with decreasing temperature at short times, leading to a decreasing PSD figure of merit. The gamma-ray photopeak energy resolution was also observed to degrade with decreasing temperature, due to an asymmetric broadening of the photopeak at low temperatures.

Silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) have become popular light conversion devices in recent years due to their low bias voltage and sensitivity to wavelengths emitted from common scintillating materials. These properties make them particularly attractive for resource-constrained missions such as space-based detector applications. However the space radiation environment is known to be particularly harsh on semiconductor devices, where high particle fluences can degrade performance over time. The radiation hardness of a particular SiPM, manufactured by ON Semiconductor (formally SensL), has yet to be studied with high energy protons, which are native to the space radiation environment. To study these effects we have irradiated groups of two SiPMs to four different fluences of 800 MeV protons delivered by the accelerator at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. Fluences of $1.68\times10^{9}$, $1.73\times10^{10}$, $6.91\times10^{10}$, and $1.73\times10^{11}$ protons cm$^{-2}$, and their corresponding estimated doses of $0.15$, $1.55$, $6.19$, and $15.5$ kRad, were chosen based on estimates of the potential exposure a SiPM might receive during an interplanetary space mission lasting 10 years. We report the measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry for the inelastic scattering of electrons from the proton, at $Q^2 = 0.082$ GeV$^2$ and $ W = 2.23$ GeV, above the resonance region. The result $A_{\rm Inel} = - 13.5 \pm 2.0 ({\rm stat}) \pm 3.9 ({\rm syst})$~ppm agrees with theoretical calculations, and helps to validate the modeling of the $\gamma Z$ interference structure functions $F_1^{\gamma Z}$ and $F_2^{\gamma Z}$ used in those calculations, which are also used for determination of the two-boson exchange box diagram ($\Box_{\gamma Z}$) contribution to parity-violating elastic scattering measurements. A positive parity-violating asymmetry for inclusive $\pi^-$ production was observed, as well as positive beam-normal single-spin asymmetry for scattered electrons and a negative beam-normal single-spin asymmetry for inclusive $\pi^-$ production., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, version accepted in Physical Review C

Cerium-doped Cs$_2$LiYCl$_6$ (CLYC) and Cs$_2$LiLaBr$_x$Cl$_{6-x}$ (CLLBC) are scintillators in the elpasolite family that are attractive options for resource-constrained applications due to their ability to detect both gamma rays and neutrons within a single volume. Space-based detectors are one such application, however, the radiation environment in space can over time damage the crystal structure of the elpasolites, leading to degraded performance. We have exposed 4 samples each of CLYC and CLLBC to 800 MeV protons at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. The samples were irradiated with a total number of protons of 1.3$\times$10$^{9}$, 1.3$\times$10$^{10}$, 5.2$\times$10$^{10}$, and 1.3$\times$10$^{11}$, corresponding to estimated doses of 0.14, 1.46, 5.82, and 14.6 kRad, respectively on the CLYC samples and 0.14, 1.38, 5.52, and 13.8 kRad, respectively on the CLLBC samples. We report the impact these radiation doses have on the light output, activation, gamma-ray energy resolution, pulse shapes, and pulse-shape discrimination figure of merit for CLYC and CLLBC.

The fields of particle and nuclear physics have undertaken extensive programs to search for evidence of physics beyond that explained by current theories. The observation of the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider completed the set of particles predicted by the Standard Model (SM), currently the best description of fundamental particles and forces. However, the theory's limitations include a failure to predict fundamental parameters and the inability to account for dark matter/energy, gravity, and the matter-antimater asymmetry in the universe, among other phenomena. Given the lack of additional particles found so far through direct searches in the post-Higgs era, indirect searches utilizing precise measurements of well predicted SM observables allow highly targeted alternative tests for physics beyond the SM. Indirect searches have the potential to reach mass/energy scales beyond those directly accessible by today's high-energy accelerators. The value of the weak charge of the proton Q_W^p is an example of such an indirect search, as it sets the strength of the proton's interaction with particles via the well-predicted neutral electroweak force. Parity violation (invariance under spatial inversion (x,y,z) -> (-x,-y,-z)) is violated only in the weak interaction, thus providing a unique tool to isolate the weak interaction in order to measure the proton's weak charge. Here we report Q_W^p=0.0719+-0.0045, as extracted from our measured parity-violating (PV) polarized electron-proton scattering asymmetry, A_ep=-226.5+-9.3 ppb. Our value of Q_W^p is in excellent agreement with the SM, and sets multi-TeV-scale constraints on any semi-leptonic PV physics not described within the SM., Comment: Direct link to Nature Version "https://rdcu.be/954U"

The Los Alamos National Laboratory designed and built Mars Odyssey Neutron Spectrometer (MONS) has been in excellent health operating from February 2002 to the present. MONS measures the neutron leakage albedo from galactic cosmic ray bombardment of Mars. These signals can indicate the presence of near-surface water deposits on Mars, and can also be used to study properties of the seasonal polar CO$_2$ ice caps. This work outlines a new analysis of the MONS data that results in new and extended time-series maps of MONS thermal and epithermal neutron data. The new data are compared to previous publications on the MONS instrument. We then present preliminary results studying the inter-annual variability in the polar regions of Mars based on 8 Mars-Years of MONS data from the new dataset.

Neutron and gamma-ray spectroscopy (NGRS) is a well established technique for studying the geochemical composition and volatile abundance relevant to planetary structure and evolution of planetary bodies. Previous NGRS instruments have used separate gamma-ray and neutron spectrometers. The Elpasolite Planetary Ice and Composition Spectrometer (EPICS) instrument is an innovative and fully integrated NGRS with low resource requirements. EPICS utilizes elpasolite scintillator read out by silicon photomultipliers to combine the gamma-ray and neutron spectrometer into a single instrument, leading to a significant reduction in instrument size, weight, and power. Galactic cosmic rays undergo complex nuclear interactions with nuclei within planetary bodies that have little to no atmosphere. Radiation transport simulations are a key tool used in understanding the neutron and gamma-ray albedo coming from these interactions and tracing these signals back to geochemical composition of the target. We study the validity of the code Geant4 for simulating such interactions by comparing simulation results to data from the Apollo 17 Lunar Neutron Probe Experiment. Different assumptions regarding the physics are explored to demonstrate how these impact the Geant4 simulation results. In general, all of the Geant4 results over-predict the data, however, certain physics lists perform better than others. In addition, we show that results from the radiation transport code MCNP6 are similar to those obtained using Geant4.

Cs$_2$LiYCl$_6$:Ce$^{3+}$ (CLYC) is a new scintillator that is an attractive option for applications requiring the ability to detect both gamma rays and neutrons within a single volume. It is therefore of interest in applications that require low size, weight, or power, such as space applications. The radiation environment in space can over time damage the crystal structure of CLYC, leading to reduced performance. We have exposed 2 CLYC samples to 800 MeV protons at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center, one to approximately 10 kRad and one to approximately 100 kRad. We measured the pulse shapes and amplitudes, energy resolution, and figure of merit for pulse-shape discrimination before and after irradiation. We have also measured the activation products and monitored for room-temperature annealing of the irradiated samples. The difference in proton radii measured with $\mu p$ atoms and with $ep$ atoms and scattering remains an unexplained puzzle. The PSI MUSE proposal is to measure $\mu p$ and $e p$ scattering in the same experiment at the same time. The experiment will determine cross sections, two-photon effects, form factors, and radii independently for the two reactions, and will allow $\mu p$ and $ep$ results to be compared with reduced systematic uncertainties. These data should provide the best test of lepton universality in a scattering experiment to date, about an order of magnitude improvement over previous tests. Measuring scattering with both particle polarities will allow a test of two-photon exchange at the sub-percent level, about a factor of four improvement on uncertainties and over an order of magnitude more data points than previous low momentum transfer determinations, and similar to the current generation of higher momentum transfer electron experiments. The experiment has the potential to demonstrate whether the $\mu p$ and $ep$ interactions are consistent or different, and whether any difference results from novel physics or two-photon exchange. The uncertainties are such that if the discrepancy is real it should be confirmed with $\approx$5$\sigma$ significance, similar to that already established between the regular and muonic hydrogen Lamb shift.

The Polarized Electrons for Polarized Positrons experiment at the injector of the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility has demonstrated for the first time the efficient transfer of polarization from electrons to positrons produced by the polarized bremsstrahlung radiation induced by a polarized electron beam in a high-$Z$ target. Positron polarization up to 82\% have been measured for an initial electron beam momentum of 8.19~MeV/$c$, limited only by the electron beam polarization. This technique extends polarized positron capabilities from GeV to MeV electron beams, and opens access to polarized positron beam physics to a wide community., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The parity-violating asymmetries between a longitudinally-polarized electron beam and an unpolarized deuterium target have been measured recently. The measurement covered two kinematic points in the deep inelastic scattering region and five in the nucleon resonance region. We provide here details of the experimental setup, data analysis, and results on all asymmetry measurements including parity-violating electron asymmetries and those of inclusive pion production and beam-normal asymmetries. The parity-violating deep-inelastic asymmetries were used to extract the electron-quark weak effective couplings, and the resonance asymmetries provided the first evidence for quark-hadron duality in electroweak observables. The Jefferson Lab Q_weak experiment determined the weak charge of the proton by measuring the parity-violating elastic scattering asymmetry of longitudinally polarized electrons from an unpolarized liquid hydrogen target at small momentum transfer. A custom apparatus was designed for this experiment to meet the technical challenges presented by the smallest and most precise ${\vec{e}}$p asymmetry ever measured. Technical milestones were achieved at Jefferson Lab in target power, beam current, beam helicity reversal rate, polarimetry, detected rates, and control of helicity-correlated beam properties. The experiment employed 180 microA of 89% longitudinally polarized electrons whose helicity was reversed 960 times per second. The electrons were accelerated to 1.16 GeV and directed to a beamline with extensive instrumentation to measure helicity-correlated beam properties that can induce false asymmetries. Moller and Compton polarimetry were used to measure the electron beam polarization to better than 1%. The electron beam was incident on a 34.4 cm liquid hydrogen target. After passing through a triple collimator system, scattered electrons between 5.8 degrees and 11.6 degrees were bent in the toroidal magnetic field of a resistive copper-coil magnet. The electrons inside this acceptance were focused onto eight fused silica Cerenkov detectors arrayed symmetrically around the beam axis. A total scattered electron rate of about 7 GHz was incident on the detector array. The detectors were read out in integrating mode by custom-built low-noise pre-amplifiers and 18-bit sampling ADC modules. The momentum transfer Q^2 = 0.025 GeV^2 was determined using dedicated low-current (~100 pA) measurements with a set of drift chambers before (and a set of drift chambers and trigger scintillation counters after) the toroidal magnet., Comment: 48 pages, 36 figures. The Proton Radius Puzzle refers to the ~7{\sigma} discrepancy that exists between the proton charge radius determined from muonic hydrogen and that determined from electronic hydrogen spectroscopy and electron-proton scattering. One possible partial resolution to the puzzle includes errors in the extraction of the proton radius from ep elastic scattering data. This possibility is made plausible by certain fits which extract a smaller proton radius from the scattering data consistent with that determined from muonic hydrogen. The reliability of some of these fits that yield a smaller proton radius was studied. We found that fits of form factor data with a truncated polynomial fit are unreliable and systematically give values for the proton radius that are too small. Additionally, a polynomial fit with a \chi^2_{reduced} ~ 1 is not a sufficient indication for a reliable result.
