Background: Indicators obtained from the analysis of the radial pulse wave allow an indirect evaluation of the interaction between cardiac ejection and arterial walls. Objectives: To analyze the characteristics of the arterial pulse in young elite athletes through a cross-sectional observational study. Methods: We evaluated the radial pulse wave in 35 high performance young male athletes, who practice various sports, comparing them with 36 healthy men of similar ages, using the applanation tonometry technique. We computed conventional indicators of central increase in central pressure and aortic propagation velocity, and added two new indicators: the slope of the increase in radial pressure and the amplitude of the oscillatory component during diastole. Results: In relation to controls, athletes exhibited lower heart rate (61.6 ± 9.1 vs. 71.4 ± 10.6 bpm, p < 0.001), lower pulse wave velocity (7.0 ± 1.0 vs. 7.5 ± 0.8 m/s, p < 0.001), lower diastolic blood pressure (67.6 ± 8.2 vs. 78.5 ± 7.3 mmHg, p < 0.001) and higher brachial pulse pressure (53.6 ± 8.3 vs. 46.7 ± 7.1 mmHg, p < 0.001). The systolic slope (0.70 ± 0.15 vs. 0.59 ± 0.13 mmHg/ms, p < 0.001) and the amplitude of diastolic oscillation (25.7 ± 6.4 vs. 18.4 ± 4.7%, p < 0.001) were significantly higher in athletes than in controls. Conclusion: Young athlete presented low aortic velocity, but significantly higher systolic slope and diastolic oscillation amplitude than controls. The steeper systolic slope and the lower diastolic blood pressure could underlie a higher stroke volume and a lower peripheral resistance respectively. The greater diastolic oscillation could be the consequence of the eccentric remodeling and increased compliance of the distal arteries, in response to intense training. We propose new pulse wave parameters obtained from the analysis of the radial waveform for the assessment of the cardiovascular adaptation to intense training. •Pulse wave contour of athletes is characterized by a steeper pressure slope and greater diastolic oscillation. •In contrast, traditional tonometric indicators did not differ significantly between athletes and controls. •The cardiovascular adaptation to high performance training could be evaluated by pulse wave analysis.

La diálisis peritoneal es una alternativa para pacientes con insuficiencia renal crónica, que requiere el análisis periódico del líquido resultante para la detección precoz de complicaciones. Dicho análisis implica la evaluación directa del líquido bajo microscopio y una posterior prueba bioquímica. Como alternativa, el líquido podría analizarse a través de una fotografía (evaluación indirecta) lo que permitiría detectar precozmente una posible complicación, sin que el paciente deba acercarse a un centro de nefrología, mejorando sustancialmente su calidad de vida. En [Comas et al., XX Congreso Argentino de Bioingeniería, pp. 477–486 (2015)] se estudió preliminarmente la detección de muestras patológicas del líquido a partir de fotografías, utilizando descriptores de color y el clasificador k-vecinos más próximos. En el presente trabajo, se presenta un método basado en redes neuronales convolucionales, partiendo de la Alexnet y utilizando transfer learning. La fase de clasificación se implementó con un perceptrón multicapa, clasificando las fotografías entre “normal” y “patológica”, con el resultado de la prueba bioquímica como Gold-standard. Se obtuvo una tasa de error de 5,79%, una FPR de 4,21% y una FNR de 7,37%, con gran estabilidad, reflejada en bajas desviaciones estándar en la estimación de las medidas de error. El método propuesto es más robusto que el enfoque previo, sin requerir ningún tipo de preprocesamiento, ni extracción de características, siendo un buen punto de partida para el desarrollo de una herramienta automática con adecuada capacidad de soporte al diagnóstico. Peritoneal dialysis is an alternative for patients with chronic renal failure requiring periodic analysis of the resulting liquid for the early detection of complications, which involves a direct evaluation of the liquid under a microscope and a biochemical test. Alternatively, the liquid could be analyzed through a photograph (indirect evaluation), enabling the early detection of complications, without requiring the patient going to a nephrology center, improving their life quality. In [Comas et al., XX Congreso Argentino de Bioingeniería, pp. 477–486 (2015)], detection of pathological samples of the liquid from photographs was preliminary studied using color descriptors and k-nearest neighbors as classifier. In the present paper, a method based on convolutional neural networks is presented, starting from Alexnet and using transfer learning. The classification phase was implemented with a multilayer perceptron, classifying the photographs between “normal” and “pathological”, using the biochemical test as Gold-standard. An error rate of 5.79%, a FPR of 4.21% and a FNR of 7.37% were obtained with great stability, reflected in low standard deviations in the estimation of the error measures. The proposed method is more robust than the previous approach, without requiring any preprocessing or feature extraction, being a good starting point for the development of an automatic tool with adequate diagnostic capacity. En el presente trabajo se estudia y desarrolla un sistema para la adquisición de señales biomédicas basado en micrófonos de tecnología MEMS (del inglés Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems). Los micrófonos MEMS están diseñados para operar en frecuencias de audio, mientras que el contenido espectral de algunas señales biomédicas se encuentra en frecuencias fuera de este rango. Por lo tanto, cada señal biomédica requiere un abordaje especial. En particular, en este trabajo se analiza la capacidad de los micrófonos MEMS para adquirir señales de presión en la vía aérea, pulso arterial y sonidos cardíacos. Luego de la adquisición y muestreo de las señales, cada una es filtrada y amplificada considerando su ancho de banda y su amplitud, y la respuesta en frecuencia de los MEMS es compensada cuando es necesario. Al obtener simultáneamente las señales de sonido cardíaco y pulso arterial, el sistema desarrollado permite la medición del tiempo de tránsito de pulso (PTT, del inglés Pulse Transit Time) el cual puede ser utilizado para realizar una estimación continua de la presión arterial. Se desarrolló un dispositivo y se realizaron mediciones de las señales consideradas. Las señales de presión en la vía aérea no resultaron fisiológicamente comprensibles. En cambio, las señales de pulso arterial mostraron similitud con las observadas en la bibliografía. Para el sonido cardíaco se obtuvieron los sonidos s1, s2 y, en algunos casos, s3. Se pudo realizar la medición de PTT de manera no invasiva, siendo este trabajo, por tanto, simiente para desarrollos futuros. A system for biomedical signal acquisition using MEMS microphones (Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems) as sensors is studied and developed. While these microphones are designed for audio, typical biomedical signals? spectrums are far below audio frequencies. Therefore, a special approach is required for acquiring biomedical signals using MEMS microphones. This paper is focused on consider these microphones for acquiring signals of pressure in the airway, arterial pulse, and heart sounds. After acquisition and sampling of the signals, each one is properly filtered and amplified considering its bandwidth and amplitude, and the frequency response of the MEMS is compensated when required. In addition, the developed system allows the measurement of the pulse transit time (PTT), allowing a continuous estimation of blood pressure, because it was possible simultaneously obtaining the heart sounds and the arterial pulse signal. Measurements on the signals acquired were performed. Airway pressure signals obtained were not physiologically understandable. On the other hand, arterial pulse signals showed similarity with those observed in the literature. The cardiac sound s1 and s2 were successfully obtained and, in some cases, s3 was also detected. The analysis of structural changes in the brain through Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) provides useful information for diagnosis and clinical treatment of patients with pathologies like Alzheimer disease and dementia. While complexity achieved by the MRI equipment is high, quantification of structures and tissues has not been entirely solved. In the present paper, MRI segmentation is discussed using a new classification method called Type-2 Label-based Fuzzy Predicate Classification (T2-LFPC). From labeled data (pixels of different tissues selected by medical experts) a random partition is defined and the obtained subsets are analyzed discovering groups with similar properties called class prototypes. Using theses prototypes, interval type-2 membership functions and fuzzy predicates are defined. Parameters regarding the fuzzy predicates are optimized. Fuzzy predicates are applied on unlabeled pixels performing the segmentation and volumes occupied for the tissues into the intracranial cavity are computed. Results are compared to those of known methods. A method of measuring the progressive atrophy and possible changes compared to a therapeutic effect should be essentially automatic and therefore independent of the radiologist. Results show that the performance of the proposed method is highly acceptable as a contribution for this requirement. Advantages of this approach are presented throughout this paper. Los modelos de ayuda a la toma de decisiones cumplen un rol de importancia en la gesO ón ambiental del territorio; en este senO do, la ingeniería ambiental consO tuye una rama del conocimiento apropiada para llevar adelante estos desarrollos. El objeO vo del trabajo es evaluar la peligrosidad de contaminación del agua subterránea en una cuenca donde el uso del suelo es esencialmente rural producO vo. Esta evaluación se realizó uO lizando lógica difusa de predicados que se formalizaron a parO r de dos grandes grupos de variables: vulnerabilidad del acuífero (de un trabajo antecedente) y carga contaminante potencial. El mapa fi nal de peligrosidad de contaminación del agua subterránea muestra que en las zonas donde la carga contaminante es alta y la vulnerabilidad es alta, la peligrosidad de contamianción es muy alta. Asimismo, en las zonas donde la carga contminante es alta y la vulnerabilidad del acuífero es baja, la peligrosidad de contaminación es moderada, como se puede observar en la cabecera de la cuenca. Decision support systems play an important role in land use management. In this sense, Environmental Engineering is a branch of knowledge suitable to carry out these developments. The aim of this work is to assess the groundwater polluO on hazard in a basin where land use is essenO ally rural producO ve. This assessment is performed using fuzzy logic predicates with numerical variables. In order to select those variables, there are consider two aspects: groundwater vulnerability (from a previous work) and potenO al pollutant load. The fi nal map of groundwater polluO on hazard shows that in areas where both the pollutant load and the groundwater vulnerability are high, the groundwater polluO on hazard is very high. Moreover, in areas where the pollutant load is high and the groundwater vulnerability is low, the groundwater polluO on hazard is moderate, as seen in the southwest of the basin.
