Abstract

Electrically manipulating the quantum properties of nano-objects, such as atoms or molecules, is typically done using scanning tunnelling microscopes and lateral junctions. The resulting nanotransport path is well established in these model devices. Societal applications require transposing this knowledge to nano-objects embedded within vertical solid-state junctions, which can advantageously harness spintronics to address these quantum properties thanks to ferromagnetic electrodes and high-quality interfaces. The challenge here is to ascertain the device's effective, buried nanotransport path, and to electrically involve these nano-objects in this path by shrinking the device area from the macro- to the nano-scale while maintaining high structural/chemical quality across the heterostructure. We've developed a low-tech, resist- and solvent-free technological process that can craft nanopillar devices from entire in-situ grown heterostructures, and use it to study magnetotransport between two Fe and Co ferromagnetic electrodes across a functional magnetic CoPc molecular layer. We observe how spin-flip transport across CoPc molecular spin chains promotes a specific magnetoresistance effect, and alters the nanojunction's magnetism through spintronic anisotropy. In the process, we identify three magnetic units along the effective nanotransport path thanks to a macrospin model of magnetotransport. Our work elegantly connects the until now loosely associated concepts of spin-flip spectroscopy, magnetic exchange bias and magnetotransport due to molecular spin chains, within a solid-state device. We notably measure a 5.9meV energy threshold for magnetic decoupling between the Fe layer's buried atoms and those in contact with the CoPc layer forming the so-called 'spinterface'. This provides a first insight into the experimental energetics of this promising low-power information encoding unit.

Abstract

We report on the ESR, magnetization and magnetic susceptibility measurements performed over a large temperature range, from 1.5 to 750 K, on high-quality stoichiometric LiNiO2. We find that this compound displays two distinct temperature regions where its magnetic behavior is anomalous. With the help of a statistical model based on the Kugel'-Khomskii Hamiltonian, we show that below T_of ~ 400 K, an orbitally-frustrated state characteristic of the triangular lattice is established. Abstract

The magnetic properties of Li_{1-x}Ni_{1+x}O_2 compounds with x ranging between 0.02 and 0.2 are investigated. Magnetization and ac susceptibility measured at temperatures between 2 K and 300 K reveal a high sensitivity to x, the excess Nickel concentration. We introduce a percolation model describing the formation of Ni clusters and use an Ising model to simulate their magnetic properties. Numerical results, obtained by a Monte-Carlo technique, are compared to the experimental data. We show the existence of a critical concentration, x_c = 0.136, locating the Ni percolation threshold. The system is superparamagnetic for xx_c. The 180 Ni-O-Ni inter-plane super-exchange coupling J_\perp \simeq -110K is confirmed to be the predominant magnetic interaction. From the low temperature behavior, we find a clear indication of a 90 Ni-O-Ni intra-plane antiferromagnetic interaction $J_\parallel \simeq -1.5K$ which implies magnetic frustration., Comment: 6 pages, 9 figures. Abstract

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has placed significant burden on healthcare systems. We compared Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) epidemiology before and during the pandemic across 71 hospitals participating in the Canadian Nosocomial Infection Surveillance Program. Using an interrupted time series analysis, we showed that CDI rates significantly increased during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

We investigated epidemiologic and molecular characteristics of healthcare-associated (HA) and community-associated (CA) Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) among adult patients in Canadian Nosocomial Infection Surveillance Program hospitals during 2015-2019. The study encompassed 18,455 CDI cases, 13,735 (74.4%) HA and 4,720 (25.6%) CA. During 2015-2019, HA CDI rates decreased by 23.8%, whereas CA decreased by 18.8%. HA CDI was significantly associated with increased 30-day all-cause mortality as compared with CA CDI (p<0.01). Of 2,506 isolates analyzed, the most common ribotypes (RTs) were RT027, RT106, RT014, and RT020. RT027 was more often associated with CDI-attributable death than was non-RT027, regardless of acquisition type. Overall resistance C. difficile rates were similar for all drugs tested except moxifloxacin. Adult HA and CA CDI rates have declined, coinciding with changes in prevalence of RT027 and RT106. Infection prevention and control and continued national surveillance are integral to clarifying CDI epidemiology, investigation, and control.

23. Development of a tool to assess evidence for causality in studies implicating sink drains as a reservoir for hospital-acquired gammaproteobacterial infection.

Abstract

Background: Decades of studies document an association between Gammaproteobacteria in sink drains and hospital-acquired infections, but the evidence for causality is unclear. Aim(s): We aimed to develop a tool to assess the quality of evidence for causality in research studies that implicate sink drains as reservoirs for hospital-acquired Gammaproteobacterial infections. Method(s): We used a modified Delphi process with recruited experts in hospital epidemiology to develop this tool from a pre-existing causal assessment application. Finding(s): Through four rounds of feedback and revision we developed the 'Modified CADDIS Tool for Causality Assessment of Sink Drains as a Reservoir for Hospital-Acquired Gammaproteobacterial Infection or Colonization'. In tests of tool application to published literature during development, mean percent agreement ranged from 46.7% to 87.5%, and the Gwet's AC1 statistic (adjusting for chance agreement) ranged from 0.13 to 1.0 (median 68.1). Areas of disagreement were felt to result from lack of a priori knowledge of causal pathways from sink drains to patients and uncertain influence of co-interventions to prevent organism acquisition. Modifications were made until consensus was achieved that further iterations would not improve the tool. When the tool was applied to 44 articles by two independent reviewers in an ongoing systematic review, percent agreement ranged from 93% to 98%, and the Gwet's AC1 statistic was 0.91-0.97. Conclusion(s): The modified causality tool was useful for evaluating studies that implicate sink drains as reservoirs for hospital-acquired infections and may help guide the conduct and reporting of future research.Copyright © 2020 The Healthcare Infection Society

Abstract

Increasing rates of antimicrobial-resistant organisms have focused attention on sink drainage systems as reservoirs for hospital-acquired Gammaproteobacteria colonization and infection. We aimed to assess the quality of evidence for transmission from this reservoir. We searched 8 databases and identified 52 studies implicating sink drainage systems in acute care hospitals as a reservoir for Gammaproteobacterial colonization/infection. We used a causality tool to summarize the quality of evidence. Included studies provided evidence of co-occurrence of contaminated sink drainage systems and colonization/infection, temporal sequencing compatible with sink drainage reservoirs, some steps in potential causal pathways, and relatedness between bacteria from sink drainage systems and patients. Some studies provided convincing evidence of reduced risk of organism acquisition following interventions. No single study provided convincing evidence across all causality domains, and the attributable fraction of infections related to sink drainage systems remains unknown. These results may help to guide conduct and reporting in future studies.Copyright © 2020 The Author(s).

Abstract

Objectives: The objective of the study is to present the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) conceptual approach to the assessment of certainty of evidence from modeling studies (i.e., certainty associated with model outputs).Study Design and Setting: Expert consultations and an international multidisciplinary workshop informed development of a conceptual approach to assessing the certainty of evidence from models within the context of systematic reviews, health technology assessments, and health care decisions. The discussions also clarified selected concepts and terminology used in the GRADE approach and by the modeling community. Feedback from experts in a broad range of modeling and health care disciplines addressed the content validity of the approach.Results: Workshop participants agreed that the domains determining the certainty of evidence previously identified in the GRADE approach (risk of bias, indirectness, inconsistency, imprecision, reporting bias, magnitude of an effect, dose-response relation, and the direction of residual confounding) also apply when assessing the certainty of evidence from models. The assessment depends on the nature of model inputs and the model itself and on whether one is evaluating evidence from a single model or multiple models. We propose a framework for selecting the best available evidence from models: 1) developing de novo, a model specific to the situation of interest, 2) identifying an existing model, the outputs of which provide the highest certainty evidence for the situation of interest, either "off-the-shelf'' or after adaptation, and 3) using outputs from multiple models. We also present a summary of preferred terminology to facilitate communication among modeling and health care disciplines.Conclusion: This conceptual GRADE approach provides a framework for using evidence from models in health decision-making and the assessment of certainty of evidence from a model or models. The GRADE Working Group and the modeling community are currently developing the detailed methods and related guidance for assessing specific domains determining the certainty of evidence from models across health care-related disciplines (e.g., therapeutic decision-making, toxicology, environmental health, and health economics). We've developed a low-tech, resist-and solvent-free technological process that can craft nanopillar devices from entire in-situ grown heterostructures, and use it to study magnetotransport between two Fe and Co ferromagnetic electrodes across a functional magnetic CoPc molecular layer 26,27. We observe how spin-flip transport across CoPc molecular spin chains promotes a specific magnetoresistance effect, and alters the nanojunction's magnetism through spintronic anisotropy 28. In the process, we identify three magnetic units along the effective nanotransport path thanks to a macrospin model of magnetotransport. Our work elegantly connects the until now loosely associated concepts of spin-flip spectroscopy 2,3 , magnetic exchange bias 29,30 and magnetotransport 24,25 due to molecular spin chains, within a solid-state device. We notably measure a 5.9meV energy threshold for magnetic decoupling between the Fe layer's buried atoms and those in contact with the CoPc layer forming the so-called 'spinterface' 16. This provides a first insight into the experimental energetics of this promising low-power information encoding unit 31.

Abstract

Experiments and theory are reexamining how the laws of thermodynamics are expressed in a quantum world. Most quantum thermodynamics research is performed at sub-Kelvin temperatures to prevent thermal fluctuations from smearing the quantum engine's discrete energy levels that mediate the asymmetric shuffling of electrons between the electrodes. Meanwhile, several groups report that building an electron-spin based implementation by placing the discrete spin states of paramagnetic centers between ferromagnetic electrodes can not only overcome this drawback, but also induce a net electrical power output despite an apparent thermal equilibrium. We illustrate this thermodynamics conundrum through measurements on several devices of large output power, which endures beyond room temperature. We've inserted the Co paramagnetic center in Co phthalocyanine molecules between electron spin-selecting Fe/C60 interfaces within vertical molecular nanojunctions. We observe output power as high as 450nW(24nW) at 40K(360K), which leapfrogs previous results, as well as classical spintronic energy harvesting strategies involving a thermal gradient. Our data links magnetic correlations between the fluctuating paramagnetic centers and output power. This device class also behaves as a spintronically controlled switch of current flow, and of its direction. We discuss the conceptual challenges raised by these measurements. Better understanding the phenomenon and further developing this technology could help accelerate the transition to clean energy. Abstract

This declaration, signed by an interdisciplinary task force of 234 experts from 83 different countries with different backgrounds, highlights the threat posed by antimicrobial resistance and the need for appropriate use of antibiotic agents and antifungal agents in hospitals worldwide especially focusing on surgical infections. As such, it is our intent to raise awareness among healthcare workers and improve antimicrobial prescribing. To facilitate its dissemination, the declaration was translated in different languages.
