The redshifted 21-cm signal from the epoch of reionization (EoR) directly probes the ionization and thermal states of the intergalactic medium during that period. In particular, the distribution of the ionized regions around the radiating sources during EoR introduces scale-dependent features in the spherically-averaged EoR 21-cm signal power spectrum. The goal is to study these scale-dependent features at different stages of reionization using numerical simulations and build a source model-independent framework to probe the properties of the intergalactic medium using EoR 21-cm signal power spectrum measurements. Under the assumption of high spin temperature, we modelled the redshift evolution of the ratio of EoR 21-cm brightness temperature power spectrum and the corresponding density power spectrum using an ansatz consisting of a set of redshift and scale-independent parameters. This set of eight parameters probes the redshift evolution of the average ionization fraction and the quantities related to the morphology of the ionized regions. We have tested this ansatz on different reionization scenarios generated using different simulation algorithms and found that it is able to recover the redshift evolution of the average neutral fraction within an absolute deviation $\lesssim 0.1$. Our framework allows us to interpret 21-cm signal power spectra in terms of parameters related to the state of the IGM. This source model-independent framework can efficiently constrain reionization scenarios using multi-redshift power spectrum measurements with ongoing and future radio telescopes such as LOFAR, MWA, HERA, and SKA. Direct detection of the Cosmic Dawn and Epoch of Reionization via the redshifted 21-cm line of neutral Hydrogen will have unprecedented implications for studying structure formation in the early Universe. This exciting goal is challenged by the difficulty of extracting the faint 21-cm signal buried beneath bright astrophysical foregrounds and contaminated by numerous systematics. Here, we focus on improving the Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) signal separation method originally developed for LOFAR observations. We address a key limitation of the current approach by incorporating covariance prior models learnt from 21-cm signal simulations using Variational Autoencoder (VAE) and Interpolatory Autoencoder (IAE). Extensive tests are conducted to evaluate GPR, VAE-GPR, and IAE-GPR in different scenarios. Our findings reveal that the new method outperforms standard GPR in component separation tasks. Moreover, the improved method demonstrates robustness when applied to signals not represented in the training set. It also presents a certain degree of resilience to data systematics, highlighting its ability to effectively mitigate their impact on the signal recovery process. However, our findings also underscore the importance of accurately characterizing and understanding these systematics to achieve successful detection. Our generative approaches provide good results even with limited training data, offering a valuable advantage when a large training set is not feasible. Comparing the two algorithms, IAE-GPR shows slightly higher fidelity in recovering power spectra compared to VAE-GPR. The upcoming Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO) will produce images of neutral hydrogen distribution during the epoch of reionization by observing the corresponding 21-cm signal. However, the 21-cm signal will be subject to instrumental limitations such as noise and galactic foreground contamination which pose a challenge for accurate detection. In this study, we present the SegU-Net v2 framework, an enhanced version of our convolutional neural network, built to identify neutral and ionized regions in the 21-cm signal contaminated with foreground emission. We trained our neural network on 21-cm image data processed by a foreground removal method based on Principal Component Analysis achieving an average classification accuracy of 71 per cent between redshift $z=7$ to $11$. We tested SegU-Net v2 against various foreground removal methods, including Gaussian Process Regression, Polynomial Fitting, and Foreground-Wedge Removal. Results show comparable performance, highlighting SegU-Net v2's independence on these pre-processing methods. Statistical analysis shows that a perfect classification score with $AUC=95\%$ is possible for $8(10\, {\rm cMpc})^3$ at $z>9$, for follow-up studies with infrared/optical telescopes to detect these sources., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables, 2 appendixes

The light-cone (LC) anisotropy arises due to cosmic evolution of the cosmic dawn 21-cm signal along the line-of-sight (LoS) axis of the observation volume. The LC effect makes the signal statistically non-ergodic along the LoS axis. The multi-frequency angular power spectrum (MAPS) provides an unbiased alternative to the popular 3D power spectrum as it does not assume statistical ergodicity along every direction in the signal volume. Unlike the 3D power spectrum which mixes the cosmic evolution of the 21-cm signal along the LoS $k$ modes, MAPS keeps the evolution information disentangled. Here we first study the impact of different underlying physical processes during cosmic dawn on the behaviour of the 21-cm MAPS using simulations of various different scenarios and models. We also make error predictions in 21-cm MAPS measurements considering only the system noise and cosmic variance for mock observations of HERA, NenuFAR and SKA-Low. We find that $100~{\rm h}$ of HERA observations will be able to measure 21-cm MAPS at $\geq 3\sigma$ for $\ell \lesssim 1000$ with $0.1\,{\rm MHz}$ channel-width. The better sensitivity of SKA-Low allows reaching this sensitivity up to $\ell \lesssim 3000$. Note that due to the difference in the frequency coverage of the various experiements, the CD-EoR model considered for NenuFAR is different than those used for the HERA and SKA-Low predictions. Considering NenuFAR with the new model, measurements $\geq 2\sigma$ are possible only for $\ell \lesssim 600$ with $0.2\,{\rm MHz}$ channel-width and for a ten times longer observation time of $t_{\rm obs} = 1000~{\rm h}$. However, for the range $300 \lesssim \ell \lesssim 600$ and $t_{\rm obs}=1000~{\rm h}$ more than $3\sigma$ measurements are still possible for NenuFAR when combining consecutive frequency channels within a $5 ~{\rm MHz}$ band., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The measurement of the $21$ cm signal from the Cosmic Dawn is a major goal for several existing and upcoming radio interferometers such as NenuFAR and the SKA. During this era before the beginning of the Epoch of Reionization, the signal is more difficult to observe due to brighter foregrounds but reveals additional information on the underlying astrophysical processes encoded in the spatial fluctuations of the spin temperature of hydrogen. To interpret future measurements, controlling the level of accuracy of the Lyman-$\alpha$ flux modelling is mandatory. In this work, we evaluate the impact of various approximations that exist in the main fast modelling approach compared to the results of a costly full radiative transfer simulation. The fast SPINTER code, presented in this work, computes the Lyman-$\alpha$ flux including the effect of wing scatterings for an inhomogeneous emissivity field, but assuming an otherwise homogeneous expanding universe. The LICORICE code computes the full radiative transfer in the Lyman-$\alpha$ line without any substantial approximation. We find that the difference between homogeneous and inhomogeneous gas density and temperature is very small for the computed flux. On the contrary, neglecting the effect of gas velocities produces a significant change in the computed flux. We identify the causes (mainly Doppler shifts due to velocity gradients) and quantify the magnitude of the effect in both an idealised setup and a realistic cosmological situation. We find that the amplitude of the effect, up to a factor of $\sim 2$ on the $21$ cm signal power spectrum on some scales (depending on both other model parameters and the redshift), can be easily discriminated with an SKA-like survey and already be approached, particularly for exotic signals, by the ongoing NenuFAR Cosmic Dawn Key Science Program., Comment: 14 pages, accepted for publication in A&A

The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is a planned radio interferometer of unprecedented scale that will revolutionize low-frequency radio astronomy when completed. In particular, one of its core science drivers is the systematic mapping of the Cosmic Dawn and Epoch of Reionization, which mark the birth of the first stars and galaxies in the Universe and their subsequent ionization of primordial intergalactic hydrogen, respectively. The SKA will offer the most sensitive view of these poorly understood epochs using the redshifted 21 cm hyperfine signal from intergalactic hydrogen. However, significant technical challenges stand in the way of realizing this scientific promise. These mainly involve the mitigation of systematics coming from astrophysical foregrounds, terrestrial radio interference, and the instrumental response. The Low Frequency Array, the Murchison Widefield Array and the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array are SKA pathfinder experiments that have developed a variety of strategies for addressing these challenges, each with unique characteristics that stem largely from their different instrumental designs. We outline these various directions, highlighting key differences and synergies, and discuss how these relate to the future of low-frequency intensity mapping with the SKA. 3C 84 (NGC 1275) is the bright radio core of the Perseus Cluster. Even in the absence of strong relativistic effects, the source has been detected at Gamma-rays up to TeV energies. Despite its intensive study, the physical processes responsible for the high-energy emission in the source remain unanswered. We present a detailed kinematics study of the source and its connection to Gamma-ray emission. The sub-parsec scale radio structure is dominated by slow-moving features in both the eastern and western lanes of the jet. The jet appears to have accelerated to its maximum speed within less than 125 000 gravitational radii. The fastest reliably detected speed in the jet was ~0.9 c. This leads to a minimum Lorentz factor of ~1.35. Our analysis suggests the presence of multiple high-energy sites in the source. If Gamma-rays are associated with kinematic changes in the jet, they are being produced in both eastern and western lanes in the jet. Three Gamma-ray flares are contemporaneous with epochs where the slowly moving emission region splits into two sub-regions. We estimate the significance of these events being associated as ~2-3 sigma. The process of heating and reionization of the Universe at high redshift links small scale structures/galaxy formation and large scale inter-galactic medium properties. Even if the first one is difficult to observe, an observation window is opening on the second one, with the promising development of current and future radio telescopes. They will permit to observe the 21cm brightness temperature global signal and fluctuations. The need of large scale simulations is therefore strong to understand the properties of the IGM that will be observed. But at the same time the urge to resolve the structures responsible of those process is important. We introduce in this study, a coupled hydro-radiative transfer simulations of the Cosmic Dawn and Reionization with a simple sub-grid star formation process developed and calibrated on the state of the art simulation CoDaII. This scheme permits to follow consistently dark matter, hydrodynamics and radiative transfer evolution's on large scales, while the sub-grid models bridges to the galaxy formation scale. We process the simulation to produce 21cm signal as close as possible to the observations.

Using the latest upper limits on the 21-cm power spectrum at $z\approx9.1$ from the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR), we explore regions of parameter space which are inconsistent with the data. We use 21CMMC, a Monte Carlo Markov Chain sampler of 21cmFAST which directly forward models the 3D cosmic 21-cm signal in a fully Bayesian framework. We use the astrophysical parameterisation from 21cmFAST, which includes mass-dependent star formation rates and ionising escape fractions as well as soft-band X-ray luminosities to place limits on the properties of the high-$z$ galaxies. Further, we connect the disfavoured regions of parameter space with existing observational constraints on the Epoch of Reionisation such as ultra-violet (UV) luminosity functions, background UV photoionisation rate, intergalactic medium (IGM) neutral fraction and the electron scattering optical depth. We find that all models exceeding the 21-cm signal limits set by LOFAR at $z\approx9.1$ are excluded at $\gtrsim2\sigma$ by other probes. Finally, we place limits on the IGM spin temperature from LOFAR, disfavouring at 95 per cent confidence spin temperatures below $\sim2.6$ K across an IGM neutral fraction range of $0.15 \lesssim \bar{x}_{H{\scriptscriptstyle I}} \lesssim 0.6$. Note, these limits are only obtained from 141 hrs of data in a single redshift bin. With tighter upper limits, across multiple redshift bins expected in the near future from LOFAR, more viable models will be ruled out. The key challenge in the observation of the redshifted 21-cm signal from cosmic reionization is its separation from the much brighter foreground emission. Such separation relies on the different spectral properties of the two components, although, in real life, the foreground intrinsic spectrum is often corrupted by the instrumental response, inducing systematic effects that can further jeopardize the measurement of the 21-cm signal. In this paper, we use Gaussian Process Regression to model both foreground emission and instrumental systematics in $\sim 2$ hours of data from the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array. We find that a simple co-variance model with three components matches the data well, giving a residual power spectrum with white noise properties. These consist of an "intrinsic" and instrumentally corrupted component with a coherence-scale of 20 MHz and 2.4 MHz respectively (dominating the line of sight power spectrum over scales $k_{\parallel} \le 0.2$ h cMpc$^{-1}$) and a baseline dependent periodic signal with a period of $\sim 1$ MHz (dominating over $k_{\parallel} \sim 0.4 - 0.8$h cMpc$^{-1}$) which should be distinguishable from the 21-cm EoR signal whose typical coherence-scales is $\sim 0.8$ MHz., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures, 1 table, Accepted to MNRAS

Neutral hydrogen pervades the infant Universe, and its redshifted 21-cm signal allows one to chart the Universe. This signal allows one to probe astrophysical processes such as the formation of the first stars, galaxies, (super)massive black holes and enrichment of the pristine gas from z~6 to z~30, as well as fundamental physics related to gravity, dark matter, dark energy and particle physics at redshifts beyond that. As one enters the Dark Ages (z>30), the Universe becomes pristine. Ground-based low-frequency radio telescopes aim to detect the spatial fluctuations of the 21-cm signal. Complementary, global 21-cm experiments aim to measure the sky-averaged 21-cm signal. Escaping RFI and the ionosphere has motivated space-based missions, such as the Dutch-Chinese NCLE instrument (currently in lunar L2), the proposed US-driven lunar or space-based instruments DAPPER and FARSIDE, the lunar-orbit interferometer DSL (China), and PRATUSH (India). To push beyond the current z~25 frontier, though, and measure both the global and spatial fluctuations (power-spectra/tomography) of the 21-cm signal, low-frequency (1-100MHz; BW~50MHz; z>13) space-based interferometers with vast scalable collecting areas (1-10-100 km2), large filling factors (~1) and large fields-of-view (4pi sr.) are needed over a mission lifetime of >5 years. In this ESA White Paper, we argue for the development of new technologies enabling interferometers to be deployed, in space (e.g. Earth-Sun L2) or in the lunar vicinity (e.g. surface, orbit or Earth-Moon L2), to target this 21-cm signal. This places them in a stable environment beyond the reach of most RFI from Earth and its ionospheric corruptions, enabling them to probe the Dark Ages as well as the Cosmic Dawn, and allowing one to investigate new (astro)physics that is inaccessible in any other way in the coming decades. (abridged) Very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations at 86$\,$GHz (wavelength, $\lambda = 3\,$mm) reach a resolution of about 50 $\mu$as, probing the collimation and acceleration regions of relativistic outflows in active galactic nuclei. To extend the statistical studies of compact extragalactic jets, a large global 86 GHz VLBI survey of 162 radio sources was conducted in 2010-2011 using the Global Millimeter VLBI Array. The survey data attained a typical baseline sensitivity of 0.1 Jy and a typical image sensitivity of 5 mJy/beam, providing successful detections and images for all of the survey targets. For 138 objects, the survey provides the first ever VLBI images made at 86 GHz. Gaussian model fitting of the visibility data was applied to represent the structure of the sources. The Gaussian model-fit-based estimates of brightness temperature ($T_\mathrm{b}$) at the jet base (core) and in moving regions (jet components) downstream from the core were compared to the estimates of $T_\mathrm{b}$ limits made directly from the visibility data, demonstrating a good agreement between the two methods. The apparent brightness temperature estimates for the jet cores in our sample range from $2.5 \times 10^{9}\,$K to $ 1.3\times 10^{12}\,$K. A population model with a single intrinsic value of brightness temperature, $T_\mathrm{0}$, is applied to reproduce the observed $T_\mathrm{b}$ distribution. It yields $T_\mathrm{0} = (3.77^{+0.10}_{-0.14}) \times 10^{11}\,$K for the jet cores, implying that the inverse Compton losses dominate the emission. In the jet components, $T_\mathrm{0} =(1.42^{+0.16}_{-0.19})\times 10^{11}\,$K is found, slightly higher than the equipartition limit of $\sim5\times 10^{10}\,$K expected for these jet regions. Direct detection of the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) via the red-shifted 21-cm line will have unprecedented implications on the study of structure formation in the infant Universe. To fulfill this promise, current and future 21-cm experiments need to detect this weak EoR signal in the presence of foregrounds that are several orders of magnitude larger. This requires extreme noise control and improved wide-field high dynamic-range imaging techniques. We propose a new imaging method based on a maximum likelihood framework which solves for the interferometric equation directly on the sphere, or equivalently in the $uvw$-domain. The method uses the one-to-one relation between spherical waves and spherical harmonics (SpH). It consistently handles signals from the entire sky, and does not require a $w$-term correction. The spherical-harmonics coefficients represent the sky-brightness distribution and the visibilities in the $uvw$-domain, and provide a direct estimate of the spatial power spectrum. Using these spectrally-smooth SpH coefficients, bright foregrounds can be removed from the signal, including their side-lobe noise, which is one of the limiting factors in high dynamics range wide-field imaging. Chromatic effects causing the so-called "wedge" are effectively eliminated (i.e. deconvolved) in the cylindrical ($k_{\perp}, k_{\parallel}$) power spectrum, compared to a power spectrum computed directly from the images of the foreground visibilities where the wedge is clearly present. M87 is the best source in which to study a jet at high resolution in gravitational units because it has a very high mass black hole and is nearby. The angular size of the black hole is second only to Sgr A*, which does not have a strong jet. The jet structure is edge brightened with a wide opening angle base and a weak counterjet. We have roughly annual observations for 17 years plus intensive monitoring at three week intervals for a year and five day intervals for 2.5 months made with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at 43 GHz. The inner jet shows very complex dynamics, with apparent motions both along and across the jet. Speeds from zero to over 2c are seen, with acceleration observed over the first 3 milli-arcseconds. The counterjet decreases in brightness much more rapidly than the main jet, as is expected from relativistic beaming in an accelerating jet oriented near the line-of-sight. Details of the structure and dynamics are discussed. Radio-loud AGN typically manifest powerful relativistic jets extending up to millions of light years and often showing superluminal motions organised in a complex kinematic pattern. A number of physical models are still competing to explain the jet structure and kinematics revealed by radio images using the VLBI technique. Robust measurements of longitudinal and transverse velocity field in the jets would provide crucial information for these models. This is a difficult task, particularly for transversely resolved jets in objects like 3C 273 and M87. To address this task, we have developed a new technique for identifying significant structural patterns (SSP) of smooth, transversely resolved flows and obtaining a velocity field from cross-correlation of these regions in multi-epoch observations. Detection of individual SSP is performed using the wavelet decomposition and multiscale segmentation of the observed structure. The cross-correlation algorithm combines structural information on different scales of the wavelet decomposition, providing a robust and reliable identification of related SSP in multi -epoch images. The algorithm enables recovering structural evolution on scales down to 0.25 full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the image point spread function (PSF). Context. Images of spatially resolved astrophysical objects contain a wealth of morphological and dynamical information, and effective extraction of this information is of paramount importance for understanding the physics and evolution of these objects. Algorithms and methods employed presently for this purpose (such as, for instance, Gaussian model fitting) often use simplified approaches for describing the structure of resolved objects. Aims. Automated (unsupervised) methods for structure decomposition and tracking of structural patterns are needed for this purpose, in order to be able to deal with the complexity of structure and large amount of data involved. Methods. A new Wavelet-based Image Segmentation and Evaluation (WISE) method is developed for multiscale decomposition, segmentation, and tracking of structural patterns in astronomical images. Results. The method is tested against simulated images of relativistic jets and applied to data from long-term monitoring of parsec- scale radio jets in 3C 273 and 3C 120. Working at its coarsest resolution, WISE reproduces exceptionally well the previous results of model fitting evaluation of the structure and kinematics in these jets. Extending the WISE structure analysis to the finer scales provides the first robust measurements of two-dimensional velocity fields in these jets and indicates that the velocity fields are likely to reflect the evolution of Kelvin-Hemlholtz instability developing the flow., Comment: 14 pages, Published in A&A
