We propose here a novel stabilization strategy for the PMCHWT equation that cures its frequency and conductivity related instabilities and is obtained by leveraging quasi-Helmholtz projectors. The resulting formulation is well-conditioned in the entire low-frequency regime, including the eddy current one, and can be applied to arbitrarily penetrable materials, ranging from dielectric to conductive ones. In addition, by choosing the rescaling coefficients of the quasi-Helmholtz components appropriately, we prevent the typical loss of accuracy occurring at low frequency in the presence of inductive and capacitive type magnetic frill excitations, commonly used in circuit modeling to impose a potential difference. Finally, leveraging on quasi-Helmholtz projectors instead than on the standard Loop-Star decomposition, our formulation is also compatible with most fast solvers and is amenable to multiply connected geometries, without any computational overhead for the search for the global loops of the structure. The efficacy of the proposed preconditioning scheme when applied to both simply and multiply connected geometries is corroborated by numerical examples.

In this contribution we analyze the spectral properties of some commonly used boundary integral operators in computational electromagnetics and of their discrete counterparts, highlighting peculiar features of their spectra. In particular, a comparison with the eigenvalues of the continuous operators will be presented that highlights deviations in the high frequency regime and impacts, in a peculiar way, the accuracy of the numerical solutions of each formulation. A study and a proactive analysis of numerical results from standard boundary element solvers and the predictions from the theoretical analysis will corroborate the analytical framework employed and the validity of our observations.

Surface integral equations (SIEs)-based boundary element methods are widely used for analyzing electromagnetic scattering scenarii. However, after discretization of SIEs, the spectrum and eigenvectors of the boundary element matrices are not usually representative of the spectrum and eigenfunctions of the underlying surface integral operators, which can be problematic for methods that rely heavily on spectral properties. To address this issue, we delineate some efficient algorithms that allow for the computation of matrix square roots and inverse square roots of the Gram matrices corresponding to the discretization scheme, which can be used for revealing the spectrum of standard electromagnetic integral operators. The algorithms, which are based on properly chosen expansions of the square root and inverse square root functions, are quite effective when applied to several of the most relevant Gram matrices used for boundary element discretizations in electromagnetics. Tables containing different sets of expansion coefficients are provided along with comparative numerical experiments that evidence advantages and disadvantages of the different approaches. In addition, to demonstrate the spectrum-revealing properties of the proposed techniques, they are applied to the discretization of the problem of scattering by a sphere for which the analytic spectrum is known., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures

We present a detailed characterization of the structure and evolution of differentially rotating plasmas driven on the MAGPIE pulsed-power generator (1.4 MA peak current, 240 ns rise-time). The experiments were designed to simulate physics relevant to accretion discs and jets on laboratory scales. A cylindrical aluminium wire array Z pinch enclosed by return posts with an overall azimuthal off-set angle was driven to produce ablation plasma flows that propagate inwards in a slightly off-radial trajectory, injecting mass, angular momentum, and confining ram pressure to a rotating plasma column on the axis. However, the plasma is free to expand axially, forming a collimated, differentially rotating axial jet that propagates at $\approx 100$ km/s. The density profile of the jet corresponds to a dense shell surrounding a low-density core, which is consistent with the centrifugal barrier effect being sustained along the jet's propagation. We show analytically that, as the rotating plasma accretes mass, conservation of mass and momentum implies plasma radial growth scaling as $r \propto t^{1/3}$. As the characteristic moment of inertia increases, the rotation velocity is predicted to decrease and settle on a characteristic value $\approx 20$ km/s. Recent pulsed-power experiments have demonstrated the formation of astrophysically-relevant, differentially rotating plasmas [1]. Key features of the plasma flows are the discovery of a quasi-Keplerian rotation curve, the launching of highly-collimated angular-momentum-transporting axial jets, and a hollow density structure sustained by the centrifugal barrier effect. In this communication we discuss several features of the plasma structure in these experiments through order-of-magnitude models. First, we show that the observed rotation velocity would produce a centrifugal force strong enough to support the hollow density profile. Second, we show that the axial jet should diverge much faster than what was observed, were it not for a magnetized halo with 3T which surrounds the jet and exerts pressure on the interface.Finally, we discuss the temperature structure in the axial jet and plasma halo.We show that a 3T magnetic field would also suppress electron heat conduction,leading to the flat profile observed experimentally. We also find that the axial jet is efficiently radiatively cooled,whereas the halo is not, which would explain the thermal decoupling between the two regions., Comment: Second version with clarifications on text and figures, and explicit calculations regarding the omega-effect. This work presents a fast direct solver strategy allowing full-wave modeling and dosimetry at terahertz (THz) frequencies. The novel scheme leverages a preconditioned combined field integral equation together with a regularizer for its elliptic spectrum to enable its compression into a non-hierarchical skeleton, invertible in quasi-linear complexity. Numerical results will show the effectiveness of the new scheme in a realistic skin modeling scenario.

The accuracy of the electric field integral equation (EFIE) can be substantially improved using high-order discretizations. However, this equation suffers from ill-conditioning and deleterious numerical effects in the low-frequency regime, often jeopardizing its solution. This can be fixed using quasi-Helmholtz decompositions, in which the source and testing elements are separated into their solenoidal and non-solenoidal contributions, then rescaled in order to avoid both the low-frequency conditioning breakdown and the loss of numerical accuracy. However, standard quasi-Helmholtz decompositions require handling discretized differential operators that often worsen the mesh-refinement ill-conditioning and require the finding of the topological cycles of the geometry, which can be expensive when modeling complex scatterers, especially in high-order. This paper solves these drawbacks by presenting the first extension of the quasi-Helmholtz projectors to high-order discretizations and their application to the stabilization of the EFIE when discretized with high-order basis functions. Our strategy will not require the identification of the cycles and will provide constant condition numbers for decreasing frequencies. Theoretical considerations will be accompanied by numerical results showing the effectiveness of our method in complex scenarios.

Recent contributions showed the benefits of operator filtering for both preconditioning and fast solution strategies. While previous contributions leveraged laplacian-based filters, in this work we introduce and study a different approach leveraging the truncation of appropriately chosen spectral representations of operators' kernels. In this contribution, the technique is applied to the operators of the 2D TE- and TM-electric field integral equations (EFIE). We explore two different spectral representations for the 2D Green's function that lead to two distinct types of filtering of the EFIE operators. We study the structure of reverse shocks formed by the collision of supersonic, magnetised plasma flows driven by an inverse (or exploding) wire array with a planar conducting obstacle. We observe that the structure of these reverse shocks varies dramatically with wire material, despite the similar upstream flow velocities and mass densities. For aluminium wire arrays, the shock is sharp and well defined, consistent with magneto-hydrodynamic theory. In contrast, we do not observe a well-defined shock using tungsten wires, instead, we see a broad region dominated by density fluctuations on a wide range of spatial scales. We diagnose these two very different interactions using interferometry, Thomson scattering, shadowgraphy, and a newly developed imaging refractometer which is sensitive to small deflections of the probing laser corresponding to small-scale density perturbations. We conclude that the differences in shock structure are most likely due to radiative cooling instabilities which create small-scale density perturbations elongated along magnetic field lines in the tungsten plasma. These instabilities grow more slowly and are smoothed by thermal conduction in the aluminium plasma.

Quasi-Helmholtz decompositions are fundamental tools in integral equation modeling of electromagnetic problems because of their ability of rescaling solenoidal and non-solenoidal components of solutions, operator matrices, and radiated fields. These tools are however incapable, per se, of modifying the refinement-dependent spectral behavior of the different operators and often need to be combined with other preconditioning strategies. This paper introduces the new concept of filtered quasi-Helmholtz decompositions proposing them in two incarnations: the filtered Loop-Star functions and the quasi-Helmholtz Laplacian filters. Because they are capable of manipulating large parts of the operators' spectra, new families of preconditioners and fast solvers can be derived from these new tools. A first application to the case of the frequency and h-refinement preconditioning of the electric field integral equation is presented together with numerical results showing the practical effectiveness of the newly proposed decompositions.

We present a Calder\'on preconditioning scheme for the symmetric formulation of the forward electroencephalographic (EEG) problem that cures both the dense discretization and the high-contrast breakdown. Unlike existing Calder\'on schemes presented for the EEG problem, it is refinement-free, that is, the electrostatic integral operators are not discretized with basis functions defined on the barycentrically-refined dual mesh. In fact, in the preconditioner, we reuse the original system matrix thus reducing computational burden. Moreover, the proposed formulation gives rise to a symmetric, positive-definite system of linear equations, which allows the application of the conjugate gradient method, an iterative method that exhibits a smaller computational cost compared to other Krylov subspace methods applicable to non-symmetric problems. Numerical results corroborate the theoretical analysis and attest of the efficacy of the proposed preconditioning technique on both canonical and realistic scenarios.

This paper focuses on fast direct solvers for integral equations in the low-to-moderate-frequency regime obtained by leveraging preconditioned first kind or second kind operators regularized with Laplacian filters. The spectral errors arising from boundary element discretizations are properly handled by filtering that, in addition, allows for the use of low-rank representations for the compact perturbations of all operators involved. Numerical results show the effectiveness of the approaches and their effectiveness in the direct solution of integral equations.

The inverse source problem in electromagnetics has proved quite relevant for a large class of applications. In antenna diagnostics in particular, Love solutions are often sought at the cost of an increase of the dimension of the linear system to be solved. In this work, instead, we present a reduced-in-size single current formulation of the inverse source problem that obtains one of the Love currents via a stable discretization of the Steklov-Poincar\'e boundary operator leveraging dual functions. The new approach is enriched by theoretical treatments and by a further low-frequency stabilization of the Steklov-Poincar\'e operator based on the quasi-Helmholtz projectors that is the first of its kind in this field. The effectiveness and practical relevance of the new schemes are demonstrated via both theoretical and numerical results.

Inverse source approaches have shown their relevance for several applications in the past years. They rely on the solution of an ill-posed problem where near-field/current data is reconstructed starting from far-field (or less informative field) information. Standard strategies, including the physically constrained ones using Love conditions, result in linear systems to be pseudoinverted which are still ill-conditioned due to the lack of information from the evanescent fields. In this work we present a generalized pseudoinverse for those problems that allows the inclusion of extra constraints from the evanescent field space, when available. This is obtained by dropping some of the standard Moore-Penrose (MP) requirements and using the resulting degrees of freedom to obtain a generalized pseudoinverse that shows favorable performance in several cases of practical interest.

Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) based on Steady State Visually Evoked Potentials (SSVEPs) have proven effective and provide significant accuracy and information-transfer rates. This family of strategies, however, requires external devices that provide the frequency stimuli required by the technique. This limits the scenarios in which they can be applied, especially when compared to other BCI approaches. In this work, we have investigated the possibility of obtaining frequency responses in the EEG output based on the pure visual imagination of SSVEP-eliciting stimuli. Our results show that not only that EEG signals present frequency-specific peaks related to the frequency the user is focusing on, but also that promising classification accuracy can be achieved, paving the way for a robust and reliable visual imagery BCI modality.

This work focuses on a quasi-linear-in-complexity strategy for a hybrid surface-wire integral equation solver for the electroencephalography forward problem. The scheme exploits a block diagonally dominant structure of the wire self block -- that models the neuronal fibers self interactions -- and of the surface self block -- modeling interface potentials. This structure leads to two Neumann iteration schemes further accelerated with adaptive integral methods. The resulting algorithm is linear up to logarithmic factors. Numerical results confirm the performance of the method in biomedically relevant scenarios.

Several strategies are available for solving the inverse source problem in electromagnetics. Among them, many have been focusing in retrieving Love currents by solving, after regularization, for Love's electric and magnetic currents. In this work we present a dual-element discretization, analysis, and stabilization of an inverse source formulation providing Love data by solving for only one current. This results in substantial savings and allows for an effective quasi-Helmholtz projector stabilization of the resulting operator. Theoretical considerations are complemented by numerical tests showing effectiveness and efficiency of the newly proposed method.

Widely employed for the accurate solution of the electroencephalography forward problem, the symmetric formulation gives rise to a first kind, ill-conditioned operator ill-suited for complex modelling scenarios. This work presents a novel preconditioning strategy based on an accurate spectral analysis of the operators involved which, differently from other Calder\'on-based approaches, does not necessitate the barycentric refinement of the primal mesh (i.e., no dual matrix is required). The discretization of the new formulation gives rise to a well-conditioned, symmetric, positive-definite system matrix, which can be efficiently solved via fast iterative techniques. Numerical results for both canonical and realistic head models validate the effectiveness of the proposed formulation.

This work presents a fast direct solver strategy for electromagnetic integral equations in the high-frequency regime. The new scheme relies on a suitably preconditioned combined field formulation and results in a single skeleton form plus identity equation. This is obtained after a regularization of the elliptic spectrum through the extraction of a suitably chosen equivalent circulant problem. The inverse of the system matrix is then obtained by leveraging the Woodbury matrix identity, the low-rank representation of the extracted part of the operator, and fast circulant algebra yielding a scheme with a favorable complexity and suitable for the solution of multiple right-hand sides. Theoretical considerations are accompanied by numerical results both of which are confirming and showing the practical relevance of the newly developed scheme.

We present first results from a novel experimental platform which is able to access physics relevant to topics including indirect-drive magnetised ICF; laser energy deposition; various topics in atomic physics; and laboratory astrophysics (for example the penetration of B-fields into HED plasmas). This platform uses the X-Rays from a wire array Z-Pinch to irradiate a silicon target, producing an outflow of ablated plasma. The ablated plasma expands into ambient, dynamically significant B-fields (~5 T) which are supported by the current flowing through the Z-Pinch. The outflows have a well-defined (quasi-1D) morphology, enabling the study of fundamental processes typically only available in more complex, integrated schemes. Experiments were fielded on the MAGPIE pulsed-power generator (1.4 MA, 240 ns rise time). On this machine a wire array Z-Pinch produces an X-Ray pulse carrying a total energy of ~15 kJ over ~30 ns. This equates to an average brightness temperature of around 10 eV on-target.

Automorphic loops are loops in which all inner mappings are automorphisms. This variety of loops includes groups and commutative Moufang loops. A half-isomorphism $f : G \longrightarrow K$ between multiplicative systems $G$ and $K$ is a bijection from $G$ onto $K$ such that $f(ab)\in\{f(a)f(b), f(b)f(a)\}$ for any $a,b\in G$. A half-isomorphism is trivial when it is either an isomorphism or an anti-isomorphism. Consider the class of automorphic loops such that the equation $x\cdot(x\cdot y) = (y\cdot x)\cdot x $ is equivalent to $x\cdot y = y\cdot x$. Here we show that this class of loops includes automorphic loops of odd order and uniquely $2$-divisible. Furthermore, we prove that every half-isomorphism between loops in that class is trivial., Comment: 15 pages

We report the structural and magnetic properties of four-layer Aurivillius compound Bi$_5$FeTi$_3$O$_{15}$ (BFTO) at high hydrostatic pressure conditions. The high-pressure XRD data does not explicitly show structural phase transitions with hydrostatic pressure, however the observed changes in lattice parameters indicate structural modifications at different pressure values. In the initial pressure region values, the lattice parameters $\textit{a}$- and $\textit{b}$- are nearly equal implying a quasi-tetragonal structure, however as the pressure increases $\textit{a}$- and $\textit{b}$- diverges apart and exhibits complete orthorhombic phase at pressure values of about $\geq$8 GPa. Principal component analysis of high pressure Raman measurements point out an evident change in the local structure at about 5.5 GPa indicating that the evolution of the local structure under applied pressure seems to not follow crystallographic changes (long range order). Nuclear forward scattering (NFS) measurement reveal the development of magnetic ordering in BFTO at 5K with high pressures. A progressive increase in magnetic order is observed with increase in pressure at 5K. Further, NFS measurements carried out at constant pressure (6.4GPa) and different temperatures indicate that the developed magnetism disappears at higher temperatures (20K).
