3. Why Am I Learning English? Spanish EFL Sports Science University Students' Motivational Orientations through the Prism of the L2 Motivational Self System

Abstract

The study explores the motivational profiles of Spanish EFL sports science university students from the second language (L2) motivation self system (L2MSS) perspective to ultimately support Spanish higher institutions' plans committed to improving employability and competitiveness. The study analyzes the relationships between L2 motivation, L2 proficiency, gender, and L2 contextual variables using data from 196 English as a foreign language (EFL) sports science university students. The data reveal that the ideal L2 self construct stands out as the most salient and powerful factor, while the ought-to and rebellious L2 selves are less significant and there are items loading on both of them at the same time. Thus, higher means for the ideal L2 self motivation correspond to higher levels of L2 proficiency and are supported by L2 learning contextual variables. The strongest ought-to L2 self was registered in students with mid-low L2 proficiency and a lack of L2 learning experiences. Meanwhile, the rebellious L2 self is clearly distinguishable only for students with high L2 proficiency. Pedagogical and curricular implications of these findings are that the ideal and the rebellious L2 selves could positively predict students' L2 proficiency. Thus, new dynamics of education should explore language teaching methodologies that are more likely to enhance students' ideal and rebellious L2 selves.

7. Literature and Language Education: Exploring Teachers' Views on Teaching Foreign Language through Literature in Bilingual Secondary Schools in Madrid (Spain)

Abstract

This study explores the perceptions of English language teachers of the use of literature in the context of bilingual secondary education in the region of Madrid (Spain). An approach was adopted under which eighty-one English teacher participants completed a questionnaire so that a quantitative methodological approach of a descriptive-correlational nature could be adopted for this study. Results unveiled teacher perceptions of the benefits and drawbacks of using literary texts as a teaching and learning tool, their selection of literary texts and their actual implementation of these texts in their English classes, as well as the training needs for the effective use of literary texts as a language teaching and learning tool in the bilingual EFL secondary classroom. The pedagogical implications of the study emphasize the need to redesign and consolidate teacher training programmes containing literature and innovative teaching aspects both in initial teacher training programmes and for continued training.

15. Proposals for Improving Assessment Systems in Higher Education: An Approach from the Model 'Working with People'

Abstract

The European Higher Education Area (EHEA) represents a challenge to university teachers to adapt their assessment systems, directing them towards continuous assessment. The integration of competence-based learning as an educational benchmark has also led to a perspective more focused on student and with complex learning situations closer to reality. However, its assessment entails an increase in lecturers' workload and a continuous demand for students due to the diversity of assessment tests required to assess each aspect of competences. After a period in which those changes have been introduced, the Technical University of Madrid (UPM) considered to analyse the assessment systems and the ways to improve them, at both bachelor's and master's degree programmes. The methodology used is based on the model "Working with People", which for the first time at the UPM, creates a participatory process with students and lecturers aimed at knowing their opinion and their feelings about the assessment process and the potential for improvement. Eight WWW-workshops were developed, with 32 students and 39 university teachers in total. The results indicate that the perception of students and lecturers regarding the assessment systems have many common points, as well as the need to undertake an improvement strategy for integrating actions from all three model dimensions, seeking a balance in joint work among lecturers, university administrators and students. This work has been performed within the framework of educational innovations cross-cutting project named "Analysis of the UPM Degree Programmes Evaluation Procedures and Proposal for Improvements" (EVALÚA), supported by the Educational Innovation Department.

Esta herramienta de autoaprendizaje está diseñada para apoyar a los estudiantes en la adquisición y desarrollo de competencias básicas necesarias para la elaboración del Trabajo de Fin de Máster (TFM). Frente al desafío que representa el TFM, muchos estudiantes experimentan incertidumbre debido a la falta de experiencia en la redacción de documentos académicos extensos y específicos en educación. El objetivo general de la herramienta es facilitar una autorregulación del aprendizaje que permita a los estudiantes prepararse adecuadamente para el TFM, cubriendo aspectos cruciales como la redacción en español, la formulación de objetivos, la búsqueda de documentos científicos, y el uso ético de la inteligencia artificial, entre otros. La herramienta se estructura en cuatro etapas esenciales: Diagnóstico: Los estudiantes responden a un cuestionario de autoevaluación para identificar su nivel de competencia actual. Revisión de Resultados: Después de completar el cuestionario, se proporcionan las respuestas correctas para que el estudiante pueda comparar y entender sus errores. Formación: Se recomienda revisar recursos de aprendizaje en áreas donde se identificaron debilidades. Reflexión: Los estudiantes redactan un informe detallando su percepción sobre las dificultades encontradas y los recursos consultados, el cual es evaluado por el tutor del TFM. Finalmente, los estudiantes evalúan la herramienta a través de un cuestionario online, contribuyendo así a su mejora continua. Esta guía de autoaprendizaje y autoevaluación permite a los estudiantes fortalecer sus competencias de manera autónoma y efectiva, asegurando una preparación sólida para su proyecto de graduación.

Abstract

Nanoindentation of ion-irradiated materials has attracted much interest as a tool envisaged to derive the dose dependence of bulk-equivalent hardness from small samples. A major challenge arises from the steep damage gradient in the thin ion-irradiated layer and its unavoidable interplay with the indentation size effect. The present study relies on a number of choices aimed at simplifying the interpretation of the results and strengthening the conclusions. The studied alloys are two ferritic Fe-9Cr model alloys differing in controlled amounts of Ni, Si, and P known to enhance irradiation hardening. Both ion-irradiated (5 MeV Fe2+ ions) and neutron-irradiated samples along with the unirradiated references were investigated using Berkovich tips. According to the collaborative nature of the study, tests were conducted in two different laboratories using different equipment. A generalized Nix–Gao approach was applied to derive the bulk-equivalent hardness and characteristic length scale parameters for the homogeneous unirradiated and neutron-irradiated samples. Comparison with Vickers hardness indicates a 6% overestimation of the bulk-equivalent hardness as compared to the ideal correlation. For the case of ion irradiation, a first model assumes a homogeneous irradiated layer on a homogeneous substrate, while a second model explicitly takes into account the damage gradient. The first model was combined with both the original and the generalized Nix–Gao relation. We have found that the results revealed for Fe-9Cr vs Fe-9Cr-NiSiP are compatible with expectations based upon known irradiation-induced microstructures. The bulk-equivalent hardness derived for ion-irradiated samples reasonably agrees with the observation for neutron-irradiated samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

29. Factors affecting students’ perception of flipped learning over time in a teacher training program

Abstract

The flipped learning methodology could play a key role in teacher training, as it exposes future teachers to experience this active methodology as students. With the purpose of shedding light on how students' perceptions may vary over time and how they can be related to the improvement of the flipped learning methodology, our study explores different factors in an eight-year period. Specifically, we analyse teaching performance considering data on students' perceptions from the 2015–2016 academic year to 2022–2023 of a course embedded within a master s degree in teacher training in Spain. Once future teachers had experienced flipped learning as students, a sample of 338 completed a survey regarding their perceptions of the flipped classroom approach and the instructor role. In our study, the more experienced the instructor, the better perception the students showed on both the flipped learning methodology and the performance of their teacher. In particular, we found that future teachers had (i) a good or very good opinion about flipped learning, regardless of their gender (ii) a more positive perception about flipped learning, teaching performance and course development in the last five academic years, (iii) no remarkable differences between study specialisations in those last academic years, and (iv) a better opinion about the flipped learning model when they have best grades. We discuss our findings according to six factors that affect the flipped learning experience and, thus, students' perception of flipped learning over time: “student characteristics”, “teacher characteristics”, “implementation”, “task characteristics”, “out-of-class activities” and “in-class activities”—factors already unveiled by a recent state-of-the-art review to enhance the effectiveness of flipped classroom. Introduction: The aim of this study was to describe incidence, incidence trends and survival patterns of lymphoid neoplasms (LNs) and its subtypes in Spain in the period 2002-2013 using data from the Spanish Network of Cancer Registries (REDECAN). Materials and Methods: Data were extracted from 13 Spanish populationbased cancer registries. LNs incident cases were codified using the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology, third edition (ICD-O-3) and grouped according to the WHO 2008 classification. Age-standardized incidence rates to the 2013 European standard population (ASIRe) were obtained. Poisson regression models were used to analyze trends in incidence rates and estimate the annual percentage change (APC) for each subtype. The number of cases in Spain for 2023 was estimated by applying the estimated age-specific rates for the year 2023 to the 2023 Spanish population. Observed survival (OS) was estimated by the Kaplan-Meier method and net survival (NS) by the Pohar-Perme method. Sex- and age-specific estimates of 5-year NS were calculated, as well as its changes according to two periods of diagnosis (2002-2007 and 2008-2013). Results: LNs accounted for 69% (n=39,156) of all hematological malignancies (n=56,751) diagnosed during the period of study. Median age at diagnosis was 67 years (interquartile range (IQR) = 52-77). The overall ASIRe was 34.23 (95% confidence interval (CI): 33.89, 34.57) and showed a marked male predominance in almost all subtypes (global sex ratio = 1.45). During the study period, incidence trends of LNs remained stable (APC: 0.3; 95% CI: -0.1, 0.6), nevertheless some subtypes showed statistically significant variations, such as LNs NOS category (APC: -5.6; 95% CI: -6.8, -4.3). Around 17,926 new cases of LNs will be diagnosed in 2023 in Spain. Survival rates differed considerably across age-groups, while they were similar between men and women. Five- year NS was 62.81% (95% CI: 62.1, 63.52) for all LNs, and varied widely across LNs subtypes, ranging from 39.21% to 90.25%. NS for all LNs improved from the first period of diagnosis to the second one, being 61.57% (95% CI: 60.56, 62.61) in 2002-2007 and 64.17% (95% CI: 63.29, 65.07) in 2008-2013. Conclusions: This study presents the first complete and extensive populationbased analysis of LNs incidence and survival in Spain. These population-based data provide relevant information to better understand the epidemiology of LNs in Southern Europe and it features some useful points for public health authorities and clinicians. Abstract

Bile acids (BAs) play different roles in cancer development. Some are carcinogenic and BA signaling is also involved in various metabolic, inflammatory and immune-related processes. The liver is the primary site of BA synthesis. Liver dysfunction and microbiome compositional changes, such as during hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development, may modulate BA metabolism increasing concentration of carcinogenic BAs. Observations from prospective cohorts are sparse. We conducted a study (233 HCC case-control pairs) nested within a large observational prospective cohort with blood samples taken at recruitment when healthy with follow-up over time for later cancer development. A targeted metabolomics method was used to quantify 17 BAs (primary/secondary/tertiary; conjugated/unconjugated) in prediagnostic plasma. Odd ratios (OR) for HCC risk associations were calculated by multivariable conditional logistic regression models. Positive HCC risk associations were observed for the molar sum of all BAs (ORdoubling = 2.30, 95% confidence intervals [CI]: 1.76-3.00), and choline- and taurine-conjugated BAs. Relative concentrations of BAs showed positive HCC risk associations for glycoholic acid and most taurine-conjugated BAs. We observe an association between increased HCC risk and higher levels of major circulating BAs, from several years prior to tumor diagnosis and after multivariable adjustment for confounders and liver functionality. Increase in BA concentration is accompanied by a shift in BA profile toward higher proportions of taurine-conjugated BAs, indicating early alterations of BA metabolism with HCC development. Future studies are needed to assess BA profiles for improved stratification of patients at high HCC risk and to determine whether supplementation with certain BAs may ameliorate liver dysfunction.

Abstract

The exceptional situation experienced on the planet during the last two academic years has forced teachers to adapt their teaching. They had to pass their face-to-face teaching methodologies to online teaching. This study analyzed the perceptions of students in a master’s degree in secondary school teacher training, who have experienced the transition to bimodal teaching during the 2020–21 and 2021–22 academic years carried out by professors with high digital teaching competence. Data from two academic years are available, with a total of 207 students. The results indicate that the experience has been positive, and no significant differences were found in the follow-up of the contents when the class was followed online. However, the feeling of belonging to the group is lower in online classes than in face-to-face classes, and the perception of online teaching is more favorable in the academic year immediately developed after the COVID crisis. The bimodal modality has become a useful solution as long as the conditions of the equipment and networks are guaranteed as well as the training of teachers in digital teaching competence. In addition, the students’ perception of this modality is that it can continue once the exceptionality of the pandemic has been overcome

Abstract

The knowledge management and the innovation for the sustainability of the cities have been modelled by decades of studies, and represented by models such as N-Helix. These models propose that knowledge, innovation, and their importance in emerging ecosystems could organise, educate, and integrate future societies. These N-Helix models are characterised by its transdisciplinarity, the role of innovation in knowledge-based societies, and the multiple social subsystems interconnected. Schools and their surroundings constitute delimited ecosystems where different stakeholders and levers of change interact, being the entry point to urban experimentation and their consequence sustainable transformation. In this sense, climate action educational programmes (CAEPs) emerge as a tool to provide to all stakeholders with skills and competences needed to lead systemic innovation towards a net zero carbon and resilient society. Through the case study of the Ecology at your Doorstep project (EayD) in Madrid, the Quintuple Helix Innovation Model (QHIM) and social innovation approach, this research fills gaps in the understanding of the key elements of urban experimentation that allow the effectiveness of CAEPs: unlocking the process of scaling-up, strengthening the collaboration, and rooting these programmes in local contexts.

Abstract

Gamification is a methodology that has gained particular relevance in recent years. This frequently used methodology in primary educational levels entices students to become motivated through games and has gradually become a university option. This study analyzes gamification as a methodology for developing educational innovation projects (EIP) at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM). A total of 58 projects carried out in four consecutive academic years, 2016–2019, were analyzed. The results show that the penetration of gamification in university classrooms is progressive but not homogeneous in the professional degree training areas. In general, the proposal’s focus is to increase the motivation and performance of the students through various supporting didactic methodologies and technologies. Abstract

This research analyzed the importance of competencies within the development of the cooperative system through the case study of the Tejemujeres Women’s Artisan Cooperative, for which a documentary and field investigation was conducted with a descriptive and explanatory scope under a mixed approach. The importance of cooperatives as tools of social cohesion has been considered due to the progress of their members, their strengthening of social capital, and generation of the necessary conditions to adapt to the demands of the place in which they operate. From this perspective, research tools such as surveys, interviews, and focus groups were implemented for a total of 85 participants of the entity under a census and incidental sample approach to analyze each of the responses under the Working With People model, from its dimensions: ethical-social, technical-business, and political-contextual. These responses have been collected in such a way that the skills of the most significant relevance to artisans are identified, which have allowed the strengthening of the cooperative system. The results demonstrate the level of incidence of a group of indigenous women from the rural area of the Gualaceo canton. The development of their skills has participated in the construction and implementation of a social model of company cooperative that—due to the complexity of its members and its environment—must face several scenarios to adequately articulate the social-business vision and achieve its sustainability over time.
