Abstract

In the graphic community, rendering lifelike scenes remains an open challenge. Among the features required to reach photorealism, aging is the crucial detail that breaks the pristine aspect that is rarely observed in real life. Multiple approaches have been proposed, from example-based to physical simulation, to compute the aging of an object. In this context, we present a simulation framework that handles multiple weathering effects causing an object to alter over time. We identify the key phenomena (wetting, drying, erosion, deposition, and dissolution) and propose a base framework to address the aging process. To tackle this challenge, our method adapts a Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics model to represent external fluids (i.e., classical fluid simulation) and internal porous flow. Our framework handles the wetting, drying, and flow in the porous space in a unified approach. We extend pre-existing sediment transport method to allow the sediment transport outside and inside the porous space. With our method, sediments can be eroded from a solid surface, transported across solid objects through their porous space, and deposited to modify other objects’ properties across the scene.

Abstract

Weathering effects are ubiquitous phenomena in cities. Buildings age and deteriorate over time as they interact with the environment. Pollution accumulating on facades is a particularly visible consequence of this. Even though relevant work has been done to produce impressive images of virtual urban environments including weathering effects, so far, no technique using a global approach has been proposed to deal with weathering effects. Here, we propose a technique based on a fast physically-inspired approach, that focuses on modeling the changes in appearance due to pollution soiling on an urban scale. We consider pollution effects to depend on three main factors: wind, rain and sun exposure, and we take into account three intervening steps: deposition, reaction and washing. Using a low-cost pre-computation, we evaluate the pollution distribution throughout the city. Based on this and the use of screen-space operators, our method results in an efficient approach able to generate realistic images of urban scenes by combining the intervening factors at interactive rates. 5. Real-time solar exposure simulation in complex cities

Abstract

In urban design, estimating solar exposure on complex city models is crucial but existing solutions typically focus on simplified building models and are too demanding in terms of memory and computational time. In this paper, we propose an interactive technique that estimates solar exposure on detailed urban scenes. Given a directional exposure map computed over a given time period, we estimate the sky visibility factor that serves to evaluate the final exposure at each visible point. This is done using a screen-space method based on a two-scale approach, which is geometry independent and has low storage costs. Our method performs at interactive rates and is designer-oriented. Notre approche permet de représenter des surplombs, des grottes, des arches ainsi que les détails du sol tel que les pierres, la terre ou le sable. Des scènes complexes peuvent être éditées et sculptées interactivement avec des outils de haut niveaux. Nous proposons également une méthode de génération d’empilements de rochers.

Abstract

Proceedings of Graphics Interface 2001, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, Canada, 7 - 9 June 2001, 167-174, Weathering phenomena represent a topic of growing interest in computer graphics, and corrosion reactions are of great importance since they affect a large number of different fields. Previous investigations have essentially dealt with the modeling and rendering of metallic patinas. We propose an approach based on simple physical characteristics to simulate and render new forms of corrosion. We take into account "real world" time and different atmospheric condition categories with experimental data. This allows us to predict the evolution of corrosion over time. The reaction is simulated using a random walk technique adapted to our generic model. For realistic rendering, we propose a BRDF and (color- and bump-) texture models, thus affecting color, reflectance and geometry. We additionally propose a set of rules to automatically predict the preferential starting locations of corrosion.

Abstract

Human-made structures' appearance depends on various aging phenomena, resulting in complex patterns that vary with time and the environment. Handling such complexity is important in computer graphics to improve virtual scenes' realism. Artists often do this work by hand. Their results are typically very good, but at the price of tediousness and a large amount of bibliographical research to place these patterns correctly on damaged objects. One way to tackle this problem is to provide new aging algorithms. A new model addresses salt-based aging, which leads to rich and common changes in appearance and plays an important part in the realism of scenes featuring stone structures and monuments. This model, based on physical behaviors and principles, replaces the simulation of complex physical formulations with ad hoc algorithms. It leads to plausible results, ultimately helping designers create aging patterns on affected objects. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

13. Efficient GPU computation of large protein Solvent-Excluded Surface.

Abstract

The Solvent-Excluded Surface (SES) is an essential representation of molecules which is massively used in molecular modeling and drug discovery since it represents the interacting surface between molecules. Based on its properties, it supports the visualization of both large scale shapes and details of molecules. While several methods targeted its computation, the ability to process large molecular structures to address the introduction of big complex analysis while leveraging the massively parallel architecture of GPUs has remained a challenge. This is mostly caused by the need for consequent memory allocation or by the complexity of the parallelization of its processing. In this paper, we leverage the last theoretical advances made for the depiction of the SES to provide fast analytical computation with low impact on memory. We show that our method is able to compute the complete surface while handling large molecular complexes with competitive computation time costs compared to previous works.
