Abstract

The present paper introduces results from measurements on site using a falling weight deflectometer (FWD). This apparatus is used for non-destructive testing of damaged pavement in order to estimate the elastic modulus of each layer. The basin of deflection induced by a controlled load can be determined with precision and can reflect the behavior of the pavement structure. The interpretation of data generated by FWD leans on inverse analysis processes. Data from FWD combined with the thickness of layers inform on the evolution of the Young's modulus of each layer of the structure along the studied road profile. This information can be also used to estimate its lifespan and possible repairs to be carried out. The resolution of the dynamic problem is implemented in a finite element software. The dynamic load was modeled from the real falling weight of the measuring apparatus. The numerical model includes absorbent boundaries to avoid all reflections. Results of in-situ measurements from the nine sensors were compared with the model. The comparison gives promising results, considering the difficulty in characterizing the mechanical parameters of the pavement. From this model, it will be obviously possible to develop an inverse analysis method to characterize the modulus of the layers and to identify the pavement defects.

Abstract

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a major neuronal growth factor, is also known to exert an antiapoptotic effect in myeloma cells. Whereas BDNF secretion was described in B lymphocytes, the ability of B cells to produce sortilin, its transport protein, was not previously reported. We studied BDNF production and the expression of its receptors, tyrosine protein kinase receptor B and p75 neurotrophin receptor in the human pre-B, mature, and plasmacytic malignant B cell lines under normal and stress culture conditions (serum deprivation, Fas activation, or their combination). BDNF secretion was enhanced by serum deprivation and exerted an antiapoptotic effect, as demonstrated by neutralization experiments with antagonistic Ab. The precursor form, pro-BDNF, also secreted by B cells, decreases under stress conditions in contrast to BDNF production. Stress conditions induced the membranous expression of p75 neurotrophin receptor and tyrosine protein kinase receptor B, maximal in mature B cells, contrasting with the sequestration of both receptors in normal culture. By blocking Ab and small interfering RNA, we evidenced that BDNF production and its survival function are depending on sortilin, a protein regulating neurotrophin transport in neurons, which was not previously described in B cells. Therefore, in mature B cell lines, an autocrine BDNF production is up-regulated by stress culture conditions and exerts a modulation of apoptosis through the sortilin pathway. This could be of importance to elucidate certain drug resistances of malignant B cells. In addition, primary B lymphocytes contained sortilin and produced BDNF after mitogenic activation, which suggests that sortilin and BDNF might be implicated in the survival and activation of normal B cells also.

Abstract

Geotechnical and mechanical tests conducted on lateritic gravels of Burkina Faso showed that this material presents: fines (10.5 wt.%), plasticity index (10.5%), Californian Bearing Ratio (43%), compressive strength (1.26 MPa) and tensile strength (Brazilian test) of 0.09 MPa. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the chemical analysis revealed a quartz amount of 42 wt.%, 26 wt.% of kaolinite, 15 wt.% of goethite, 6 wt.% of rankinite and 3 wt.% of hematite. The results of geotechnical and mechanical tests combined to those of the XRD and the chemical analysis particularly the silica/sesquioxides ratio showed that the lateritic gravels is suitable for the sub-base course in road construction.

Abstract

International audience; Synthesis of a triazole-linked 3'-5' thymidine dimer making use of 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition is described. The azido-precursor was obtained by regioselective chlorination of thymidine, followed by azidation. The second precursor, a propargyl derivative, was obtained by selective 3'-O-alkylation of thymidine. Two 'click systems' were compared to obtain the desired dimer. These reactions were performed by microwave irradiation.

Abstract

International audience; The objective of this paper is to extend the literature on bank capital buffer by considering the role of bank heterogeneity. Using a sample of European commercial banks over 1992-2006, we show that four key determinants – risk, business cycle, market and peer discipline – have different impact on capital buffer depending on banks' financing mode, activity or size. Our results offer a framework for discussing the appropriateness of the still on-going suggestions on bank capital regulation. Whereas they support the differentiating measures undertaken in Basel 3 such as specific capital surcharges for SIFIs, they disagree with the adoption of uniform countercyclical buffers.

Abstract

This paper reformulates the finance-growth nexus in the case of developing countries. Using the Neoclassical growth framework, our contribution is threefold. First, we show that entrepreneurship is a growth-enhancing factor in both financial intermediary equilibrium and financial market equilibrium. Second, we show that agent's saving is one of the determinants of the optimal proportion of long-term investment and hence, we characterize the role of bank as financial intermediary. Third, our model is characterized by the existence of multiple steady states equilibrium with threshold effect that impedes the economy to reach a long-run higher steady state equilibrium. Furthermore, we show that financial intermediary is better than financial market, in order to reduce threshold effect and to ensure the long-run steady state equilibrium of capital stock.

Abstract

International audience; Using monthly data of 99 commercial banks during the period 2004-2007, we investigate whether capital buffer can be explained by bank-specific, business cycle, regulatory and institutional variables. In regards to the business cycle, we find evidence that bank capital buffer is procyclical. These finding becomes different, if we divide banks into two sub-groups according to bank size and market involvement. More importantly, larger banks and listed banks more involved in market activities, tend to increase their capital buffer during economic booms, but reduce it during economic downturns. These findings have regulatory implications for the Basel II implementation in Indonesia, notably in solving its procyclicality. For instance, small banks consolidations and supporting banks to more involve in market activities, as well as market discipline enforcement, become necessary. This paper also reveals that higher non-interest income enhances capital buffer.

Das Buch begibt sich auf die Suche nach dem verlorenen Reich des karolingischen Königs Lothar II., das 855 als "Lotharingien" eingerichtet wurde und bis zu seiner Auflösung im 10. Jahrhundert vielfache Veränderungen erfuhr. Stellte dieses politische Gebilde von der Nordsee bis zum Alpenrand einen kohärenten Raum mit einem für den Historiker fassbaren "Wir-Gefühl" dar? Die Studie beschäftigt sich umfassend mit diesen lotharingischen Gebieten und betrachtet sie aus institutioneller, ökonomischer, gesellschaftlicher und kultureller Perspektive. Die Auswertung wichtiger volkssprachiger Texte wie etwa des Ludwigslieds erlaubt eine Dekonstruktion der Vorstellung von einer lotharingischen Identität. Lotharingien erscheint damit als europäischer Erinnerungsort.

ERMA; International audience; Despite the introduction of new procedures such as pharmacologic reduction of portal pressure and endoscopic sclerotherapy, the role of surgery in portal hypertension must be reconsidered. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the long-term results of mesocaval interposition shunting in the treatment of recurrent variceal bleeding after sclerotherapy failure or in patients with intractable ascites in whom optimal medical treatments failed. Over a 20-year period, 85 patients (66 men and 19 women; mean age, 53.96 +/- 11.57 years) underwent a mesocaval interposition shunt procedure. Sixty-six patients had recurrent variceal bleeding, and 19 patients had refractory ascites. The underlying etiology of portal hypertension was alcoholic cirrhosis (n = 69), posthepatitis cirrhosis (n = 10), cryptogenic cirrhosis (n = 3), primary biliary cirrhosis (n = 2), and Budd-Chiari syndrome (n = 1). Thirty-one patients were in Child-Pugh grade A, 34 were in grade B, and 20 were in grade C. The mean diameter of the graft was 11.85 +/- 1.53 mm (range, 10-14 mm). Overall, in-hospital mortality was 10.5% (9 of 85 patients). There were 3 postoperative recurrences of variceal hemorrhage and 5 recurrent bleeds during the follow-up. The overall incidence of shunt thrombosis of this series was 10.5%. The total incidence of encephalopathy was 10.5%. Intraoperative gradient pressure measurements before and after shunt showed satisfactory pressure reduction (16.90 +/- 5.32 to 5.12 +/- 2.50/ mmHg; P < 0.0001). The mean follow-up period was 26.09 +/- 25.3 (range, 1-90) months. Nine patients (10.5%) later received liver transplants, with time intervals ranging from 2 months to 5 years. The actuarial survival rate was 92% at 1 year and 75% at 5 years. In our series, the interposition mesocaval shunt seems to be an effective procedure for the control of complications of portal hypertension in cirrhotic patients with good long-term results. Moreover, the procedure can be considered as a solution of choice in patients who are current liver transplant candidates, leaving the hepatic hilus intact.

International audience; This paper deals with a finite element algorithm for the creep crack growth process in a viscoelastic medium. The main developments focus on the coupling between the M-integral and an incremental formulation for the viscoelastic behavior. In this context, mixed mode configurations are simulated for orthotropic symmetries. An algorithm uncoupling viscoelastic incremental formulation and the fracture procedure is resolved with finite element software. The global approach is validated in terms of the evolution of energy release rate versus time and the advance of cracks. Numerical simulations are based on a Constant Tension Shear model. The insensitivity of the M-integral to the integration domain is shown from creep crack growth simulations for mixed mode configurations.

International audience; A recent development in thermal spraying is to design the microstructure of coatings by controlling the sizes of the structural features within the coating so that they exhibit dimensions at the nanoscale. Improvements in performance can be in mechanical properties as well as functional properties. The size of these nano-structured features depend both on the form of the starting material (agglomerates of nanoparticles, liquid precursors) and the process conditions employed during production. Narrowing the crystal size distribution can be obtained from a carefully-controlled nucleation and growth process. This study presents a one-dimensional heat transfer model of splat cooling and solidification under plasma spray conditions. The model involves melt undercooling, nucleation and crystal growth kinetics. It intends to investigate the effect of the oxidation of various steel substrates, on the size and density of the nucleated grains.

Abstract

The oxidation of iodide by synthetic birnessite (delta-MnO(2)) was studied in perchlorate media in the pH range 4-8. Iodine (I(2)) was detected as an oxidation product that was subsequently further oxidized to iodate (IO(3)(-)). The third order rate constants, second order on iodide and first order on manganese oxide, determined by extraction of iodine in benzene decreased with increasing pH (6.3-7.5) from 1790 to 3.1M(-2) s(-1). Both iodine and iodate were found to adsorb significantly on birnessite with an adsorption capacity of 12.7 microM/g for iodate at pH 5.7. The rate of iodine oxidation by birnessite decreased with increasing ionic strength, which resulted in a lower rate of iodate formation. The production of iodine in iodide-containing waters in contact with manganese oxides may result in the formation of undesired iodinated organic compounds (taste and odor, toxicity) in natural and technical systems. The probability of the formation of such compounds is highest in the pH range 5-7.5. For pH5 iodine is quickly oxidized to iodate, a non-toxic and stable sink for iodine. At pH7.5, iodide is not oxidized to a significant extent.

International audience; This paper presents a new incremental formulation in the time domain for linear, non-aging viscoelastic materials undergoing mechanical deformation. The formulation is derived from linear differential equations based on a discrete spectrum representation for the creep tensor. The incremental constitutive equations are then obtained by finite difference integration. Thus the difficulty of retaining the stress history in computer solutions is avoided. A complete general formulation of linear viscoelastic stress analysis is developed in terms of increments of strains and stresses. Numerical results of good accuracy are achieved. The analytical and numerical solutions are compared using the energy release rate in pure mode I and pure mode II.

International audience; The rheological properties of anaerobic granular sludge samples from four full-scale and one lab-scale anaerobic bioreactors were characterized by determining their "limit viscosity" values. These values were deducted from the evolution of the apparent viscosity of granular sludge samples (20 mL) at steady shear rate (200 s−1) recorded using rotation tests with a wings type measurement cell stirrer Anton-Parr reference: ST24-1D/2V-Q0. The limit viscosity values depended on the applied shear rate, indicating a non-Newtonian behavior of the anaerobic granular sludge types investigated. The effect of variations of physico-chemical parameters such as pH (involving surface charge change), size, surface roughness and TSS content on the evolution of the limit viscosity of an anaerobic granular sludge suspension was investigated. This showed the importance of both quantitative (number of particles in a given volume) as well as qualitative (surface charge or shape) granule-granule interactions on this rheological parameter. Moreover, the origin of the granular sludge strongly influenced the limit viscosity value according with different granules characteristics. This work confirms the ability of the rheological parameter "limit viscosity" as an overall parameter to describe the physico-chemical characteristics (TSS, granulometry, origin, and charge) of anaerobic granular sludge and showed this holds for both sieved (500 μm) and unsieved sludges.

Abstract

ERMA; International audience; GOAL: This study aims to determine the post-surgical survival after resection of adrenal metastasis from extra-adrenal primary cancers. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective study of sixteen patients undergoing surgery for adrenal metastasis between 1995 and 2005 analyzed age, type of primary cancer, interval to detection of adrenal metastasis, type of surgery performed, and survival (Kaplan-Meier curve). RESULTS: The study included 10 men and 6 women with a mean age of 55.5 years (25-74). Adrenal metastasis causes no clinical signs or symptoms. Diagnosis was made on the basis of CT scan in 12 cases and PET scan in 4 cases. The primary cancer site was lung (6), kidney (3), melanoma (2), colorectum (2), esophagus (1), pancreas (1), and B-cell lymphoma (1). Metastasis was confined to the adrenal in 7 cases and associated with other-site metastasis in 9. The interval from diagnosis of the primary cancer to detection of the adrenal metastasis ranged from 9 months to 11 years. Surgery consisted of radical resection in 5 cases, metastasectomy in 10 cases, and biopsy in one case. The overall survival was 12 months (range 2-120 months); when the diagnosis of the metastasis was synchronous with that of the primary, survival was just 8 months. CONCLUSION: The survival after surgery for adrenal metastasis is poor; it is even more dismal when the metastasis is diagnosed synchronously with the primary tumor. Surgical management depends on the primary neoplasm and the extent of metastases.
